Abstract:
Industrial Networks (INs) are widespread environments where heterogeneous devices collaborate to control and monitor physical processes. Some of the controlled processes belong to Critical Infrastructures (CIs), and, as such, IN protection is an active research field. Among different types of security solutions, IN Anomaly Detection Systems (ADSs) have received wide attention from the scientific community. While INs have grown in size and in complexity, requiring the development of novel, Big Data solutions for data processing, IN ADSs have not evolved at the same pace. In parallel, the development of Big Data frameworks such as Hadoop or Spark has led the way for applying Big Data Analytics to the field of cyber-security, mainly focusing on the Information Technology (IT) domain. However, due to the particularities of INs, it is not feasible to directly apply IT security mechanisms in INs, as IN ADSs face unique characteristics. In this work we introduce three main contributions. First, we survey the area of Big Data ADSs that could be applicable to INs and compare the surveyed works. Second, we develop a novel taxonomy to classify existing IN-based ADSs. And, finally, we present a discussion of open problems in the field of Big Data ADSs for INs that can lead to further development.

Abstract:
The muscle isozyme of adenylosuccinate synthetase (AdSS), an enzyme of the purine nucleotide cycle, has previously been shown to bind to purified F-actin in buffers of low ionic strength and pH (Ogawa et al. Eur. J. Biochem. 85: 331-338, 1978). We have extended these observations by measuring the association of both crude and purified AdSS with the contractile proteins of muscle in buffers of physiological ionic strength and pH. Under these conditions, the enzyme binds to F-actin, actin-tropomyosin complexes, reconstructed thin filaments, and myofibrils but not to myosin. The apparent dissociation constant of 1.2 microM and binding maximum of 2.6 nmol enzyme/mg myofibrils indicate that binding of AdSS to myofibrils can be physiologically significant. The results suggest that AdSS in muscle may be associated with the thin filament of myofibrils.

Abstract:
Background: Automated driving systems (ADSs) have the potential to fundamentally transform transportation by reducing crashes, congestion, and cost while improving traffic efficiency and access to mobility for the transportation-challenged population (US DOT, 2020). However, a recent on-road test of five vehicles capable of SAE Level 2 (SAE, 2016) driving automation equipped with forward collision warning (FCW), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane departure warning (LDW), and lane keep assist (LKA) revealed that ADSs may not work as expected in typical driving situations, such as approaching stopped vehicles and negotiating hills and curves (IIHS, 2018). Even worse, people may not use ADSs as intended due to their misunderstanding of, over-trust, or distrust in such systems’ capabilities and limitations (IIHS, 2019). As Level 2 ADSs have become commercially available, accounts of unintended uses of these systems and fatal consequences have emerged. For example, a recent news article reported a Tesla driver napping behind the wheel (Fox News, 2019). Objective: Given the growing availability of ADSs on public roadways as well as the risk of their unintended use and safety consequences, this work aimed to better understand (1) realworld use of ADSs, (2) prevalence of unintended use of such systems, and (3) driver impressions after prolonged use of such systems. Method: The research team investigated an existing naturalistic driving database collected from the Virginia Connected Corridor Level 2 Naturalistic Driving Study (VCC L2 NDS, Dunn, Dingus, & Soccolich, 2019). The dataset contains data from 50 participants who drove personally owned vehicles for 12 months. Participating vehicles were equipped with longitudinal control systems (e.g., ACC) at the minimum, although most also had lateral control systems (e.g., LKA). Specifically, we investigated safety-critical events (SCEs, Guo & Fang, 2013) of different severity levels (e.g., crashes and near-crashes) captured in the data. We also examined drivers’ responses to a post-study questionnaire that captured drivers’ subjective ratings on the usefulness and usability of the ADS. Results: We found that 47 out of 235 (20%) SCEs involved ADS use. An in-depth analysis of 47 SCEs revealed that people misused ADSs in 57% of SCEs (e.g., engaged in secondary tasks, used the systems not on highways, or with hands off the wheel). During 13% of SCEs, the systems neither reacted to the situation nor warned the driver. A post-study survey showed that people found ADSs useful and usable. However, the more participants were positive to ADS features, the more they felt comfortable engaging in secondary tasks, which is an unintended side effect of Level 2 ADSs as they require the human driver’s supervision. This study also captured some scenarios where the ADSs did not meet driver expectations. Many people reported that the longitudinal control features did not respond well to cutting-in leads (23% of participants) and stopped leads (14%). The lateral control features were often automatically disengaged when encountering blurred lane markings (14% of participants reported) and had difficulties when negotiating curves (9%). Conclusion: This study contributes to a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of early production SAE L2 vehicles, the prevalence of the unintended use of ADSs, and drivers’ perceptions of these new technologies. Designers of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for such systems should always consider the possibility of drivers’ overconfidence in the systems. Therefore, it might be better for vehicles to have multimodal HMIs (Large et al., 2019) adaptive to not only the urgency of situations but also driver state by monitoring driver behavior and engagement in the primary task of driving. Application: The findings from this study may inform the development of HMIs, training programs, and owner’s manuals to reduce the unintended use of ADSs and safety consequences. The identified characteristics of situations where the ADSs failed to warn drivers during SCEs will further inform the development of testing scenarios to ensure ADS safety.

Abstract:
We have previously demonstrated that aged and diluted sidestream cigarette smoke (ADSS) alters the development of bronchiolar epithelial cells in postnatal animals (C. M. Ji, C. G. Plopper, H. P. Witschi, and K. E. Pinkerton. Am. J. Respir. Cell Mol. Biol. 11: 312–320, 1994). This study was designed to examine the effects of maternal exposure to ADSS on the development of fetal Clara cells in rats with Clara cell 10-kDa protein (CC10; also designated Clara cell secretory protein) and CC10 mRNA as differentiation markers. Immunohistochemistry, Northern blots, and in situ hybridization were used to determine the abundance and distribution of CC10 at gestational days 14, 18, and 21. CC10 and CC10 mRNA were absent at gestational day 14 but were detectable at gestational day 18 and further increased by gestational day 21. Maternal exposure to ADSS was found to significantly increase fetal expression of CC10 and CC10 mRNA by gestational day 21 but not by gestational day 14 or 18. These findings demonstrate that in utero exposure to ADSS alters the normal developmental expression of CC10 in the fetal rat lung.

Abstract:
In this paper, the wind-induced response of the ADSS is analyzed when the high-speed trains pass by. The wind flow field of the high-speed train is simulated based on the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, combined with the k-ε turbulence model. The result is shown that the wind load acting on the ADSS is quite low and the stress of the line clamp increases a little.

The aim of the thesis is to study the AdS/CFT correspondence and the AdS2/SYK connection as a very special example of the duality. While the first part of the thesis contains a review of AdS/CFT correspondence in arbitrary dimensions, the later parts focus on an interesting and speculative connection between the gravitational physics in two dimensional nearly AdS2 spacetime and one dimensional SYK model. More specifically, the connection is realized in terms of certain features of the SYK model in strong coupling limit, which resembles those of nearly AdS2 Jackiw-Teitelboim theory.

This thesis is focused on assessing the impact of retrofitting dielectric All Dielectric Self-Supporting Cable (ADSS) to existing MV overhead line. This type of optical cable is a means of future strengthening of the communication infrastructure of the distribution network. However, its mechanical properties are significantly different from the properties ACSR cable, due to which its installation can be problematic in terms of meeting the requirements of the PNE 33 3301 standard. In practical part, this work deals with the design of the ADSS installation on the existing MV line and the determination of its impact based on the assessment of the results of this design.

Abstract:
A novel pipeline is presented for unsupervised trajectory prediction. As part of this research, numerous techniques are investigated for trajectory prediction of dynamic obstacles from an egocentric perspective (driver’s per- spective). The algorithm takes images from a calibrated stereo camera as input or data from a laser scanner and outputs a heat map that describes all possible future locations of that specific 3D object for the next few frames. This research has many applications, most notably for autonomous cars as it allows them to make better driving decisions if they are able to anticipate where another moving object is going to be in the future.

Li, Ting. "Performance Enhancement of Pipeline ADCs." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2014. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27511.

Full text
Abstract:
The pipeline ADC is mainstream architecture in wireless communication and digital consumer products because of its speed, resolution, dynamic performance, and power consumption. However, there are three areas of concern with the pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC): power consumption, accuracy, and convergence speed of the digital calibration. The traditional pipeline ADC includes a dedicated front-end sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA), which consumes a significant amount of power. This research presents a novel configuration of the front-end stage with a sample-and-hold function for a SHA-less architecture. In addition, the multi-bit front-end has multiple benefits. Interestingly, if one additional bit is resolved in the front-end stage, then the comparator offset correction ability of this stage is reduced by half. To address this problem, this research presents a novel domain-extended digital error correction algorithm to increase the comparator offset correction ability. In order to improve accuracy, a combination of techniques are used: communicated feedback-capacitor switching (CFCS), gain boost amplifiers, and low noise dynamic comparators. Here, the ADC uses the above mentioned techniques and is fabricated with AMIS 0.5 ?m CMOS. The ADC, with an active area of 4.5 mm (superscript 2), consumes 264 mW when a 32 MHz input is at 75-MS/s sample rate. The third area of concern is convergence time, which determines the quality of the digital calibration. The high resolution ADC can be achieved without calibration. Therefore, in order for a digital calibration to be useful, it should minimize the analog circuits and have a reasonable convergence time. The reduced accuracy due to minimized analog circuits can be complemented by the digital calibration. Therefore, the convergence time determines the quality of the digital calibration. In this research a new domain-extended dither-based algorithm increases the convergence speed. Moreover, the novel variable-amplitude domain-extended dither-based algorithm further increases the convergence speed. Matlab simulations illustrate these improvements.

Abstract:
Today's complex electronic systems with billions of transistors on a single die are enabled by the aggressive scaling down of the device feature size at an exponential rate as predicted by the Moore's law. Digital circuits benefit from technology scaling to become faster, more energy efficient as well as more area efficient as the feature size is scaled down. Moreover, digital design also benefits from mature CAD tools that simplify the design and cross-technology porting of complex systems, leveraging on a cell-based design methodology. On the other hand, the design of analog circuits is getting increasingly difficult as the feature size scales down into the deep nanometer regime due to a variety of reasons like shrinking voltage headroom, reducing intrinsic gain of the devices, increasing noise coupling between circuit nodes due to shorter distances etc. Furthermore, analog circuits are still largely designed with a full custom design ow that makes their design and porting tedious, slow, and expensive. In this context, it is attractive to consider realizing analog/mixed-signal circuits using standard digital components. This leads to scaling-friendly mixed-signal blocks that can be designed and ported using the existing CAD framework available for digital design. The concept is already being applied to mixed-signal components like frequency synthesizers where all-digital architectures are synthesized using standard cells as basic components. This can be extended to other mixed-signal blocks like digital-to-analog and analog to- digital converters as well, where the latter is of particular interest in this thesis. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)-based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an attractive architecture to achieve all-digital analog-to digital conversion due to favorable properties like shaping of the quantization error, inherent anti-alias filtering etc. Here a VCO operates as a signal integrator as well as a quantizer. A converter employing a ring oscillator as the VCO lends itself to an all-digital implementation. In this dissertation, we explore the design of VCO-based ADCs synthesized using digital standard cells with the long-term goal of achieving high performance data converters built from low accuracy switch components. In a first step, an ADC is designed using vendor supplied standard cells and fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS process. The converter delivers an 8-bit ENOB over a 25 MHz bandwidth while consuming 3.3 mW of power resulting in an energy efficiency of 235 fJ/step (Walden FoM). Then we utilize standard digital CAD tools to synthesize converter designs that are fully described using a hardware description language. A polynomial-based digital post-processing scheme is proposed to correct for the VCO nonlinearity. In addition, pulse modulation schemes like delta modulation and asynchronous sigma-delta modulation are used as a signal pre-coding scheme, in an attempt to reduce the impact of VCO nonlinearity on converter performance. In order to investigate the scaling benefits of all-digital data conversion, a VCO-based converter is designed in a 28 nm CMOS process. The design delivers a 13.4-bit ENOB over a 5 MHz bandwidth achieving an energy efficiency of 4.3 fJ/step according to post-synthesis schematic simulation, indicating that such converters have the potential of achieving good performance in deeply scaled processes by exploiting scaling benefits. Furthermore, large conversion errors caused by non-ideal sampling of the oscillator phase are studied. An encoding scheme employing ones counters is proposed to code the sampled ring oscillator output into a number, which is resilient to a class of sampling induced errors modeled by temporal reordering of the transitions in the ring. The proposed encoding reduces the largest error caused by random reordering of up to six subsequent bits in the sampled signal from 31 to 2 LSBs. Finally, the impact of process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations on the performance while operating the converter from a subthreshold supply is investigated. PVT-adaptive solutions are suggested as a means to achieve energy-efficient operation over a wide range of PVT conditions.

Abstract:
ADSS (Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System) nuclear reactors are expected to play a significant role in nuclear power generation in future due to their ability to utilize Thorium as the nuclear fuel, operating in sub-critical conditions and to transmute radioactive nuclear wastes. Numerical investigation of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of an ADSS has been accomplished using a finite element method based on Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) technique. The time-dependent governing equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy are solved. The simulations have been carried out to predict the heat transfer in the spallation regime. At the first place, laminar regime of the flow is considered for the ADSS geometry. The Reynolds number of interest were varied over a specified range.

Abstract:
ADSS (Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System) nuclear reactors have evoked renewed interest in research because it operates in sub-critical conditions and transmutes nuclear wastes. The cases of beam window with heat flux prescription is analyzed in the absence and presence of heat generation in the liquid metal. At the first place, laminar regime of the flow is considered for the ADSS geometry. The Reynolds number of interest were varied over a specified range.
