Nyakundi, Freda Moraa. "Development of ADR mechanisms in Kenya and the role of ADR in labour relations and dispute resolution." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15173.

Full text
Abstract:
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a vastly growing enterprise in conflict management the world over. Its application in managing labour relations and the attendant disputes has been tested and is well settled. Kenya, in recognition of this phenomenon, has adopted a legal framework making provisions for both ADR and Labour rights in its most supreme law, the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. This informs the theme of the current study. The disciplines that are ADR and labour relations are overwhelmingly extensive. Thus they cannot find conclusive commentary in a single book leave alone a thesis with a predicated word count. This paper is neither a one stop-shop treatise nor an integral text on either disciplines but a comprehensive commentary, on the interplay between ADR and labour relations. Fair treatment has been accorded and care has been borne to neither starve one nor belabor the other. It is a commentary spanning eons, reaching out to the past, tracking development and addressing the prevailing circumstances in respect of ADR's application in labour dispute resolution in Kenya. The rich literature review (books, statutes, conventions, journals, articles) quoted is as informative as it is illuminating, and presents a wealth of knowledge. The overall aim is to assess the place of ADR in labour relations in Kenya and spur academic, intellectual and sector-wise debate on the foregoing.

Weatherstone, S. A. "Development of milli-Kelvin ADR technology for space missions." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1364561/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cryogenics is increasingly required for space applications as new detector technologies emerge offering improved performance, as is exemplified by future X-ray astronomy missions. The IXO1 (International X-ray Observatory) mission will carry an X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer (XMS), requiring a 50mK operating temperature. Two space-demonstrated technologies are capable of maintaining milli--Kelvin temperatures: Adiabatic Demagnetisation Refrigerators (ADRs) and open-cycle Dilution refrigerators. ADRs are simpler, more reliable, and have a longer lifetime than open-cycle dilution refrigerators which deplete their Helium stores after ~3 years. For long-life (>5 year) missions, ADRs are the best practical choice. MSSL have built an engineering model ADR for the XEUS (X-ray Evolving Universe Spectroscopy) mission. However, the ADR cannot achieve the required hold time and recycle time. This thesis shows how a magnetoresistive heat switch can improve performance such that the required hold time can be achieved. Tungsten Magnetoresistive heat switch technology is developed through experimental investigation. Heat switch performance is found to be a function of purity; the difference between an otherwise identical 99.992% and a 99.999% pure sample is very significant, with switching ratios of 437 and 1×104 respectively at ~4K. The ‘on’ state thermal conductivity is limited by sample size as it is reduced to the electron mean free path and below. A Tungsten magnetoresistive heat switch mounted in the XEUS ADR via bolted joints lined with 0.13mm thick Indium foil can improve its performance to meet the design requirements. MSSL are developing an ADR targeting the IXO XMS. The cooling chain required to support the ADR is presented. The design feasibility and compliance to requirements are verified by thermal and mechanical analyses, and it is shown that the ADR can be supported during holding and recycling for both warm and cold redundancy modes of higher temperature stage coolers in the chain. [1] NOTE: During the writing of this thesis, the IXO mission ceased to be a candidate of the L-class missions under consideration by ESA. However, due to the strong science case of IXO; ESA, Astrium and the scientific community are investigating to what extent a European-led mission could preserve the original science goals of IXO. This new study is ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics).

Garcia, Lyan, James Rowland, and Jeb Tingle. Evaluation of geocell-reinforced backfill for airfield pavement repair. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42550.

Full text
Abstract:
After an airfield has been attacked, temporary airfield pavement repairs should be accomplished quickly to restore flight operations. Often, the repairs are made with inadequate materials and insufficient manpower due to limited available resources. Legacy airfield damage repair (ADR) methods for repairing bomb damage consist of using bomb damage debris to fill the crater, followed by placement of crushed stone or rapid-setting flowable fill backfill with a foreign object debris (FOD) cover. While these backfill methods have provided successful results, they are heavily dependent on specific material and equipment resources that are not always readily available. Under emergency conditions, it is desirable to reduce the logistical burden while providing a suitable repair, especially in areas with weak subgrades. Geocells are cellular confinement systems of interconnected cells that can be used to reinforce geotechnical materials. The primary benefit of geocells is that lower quality backfill materials can be used instead of crushed stone to provide a temporary repair. This report summarizes a series of laboratory and field experiments performed to evaluate different geocell materials and geometries in combinations with a variety of soils to verify their effectiveness at supporting heavy aircraft loads. Results provide specific recommendations for using geocell technology for backfill reinforcement for emergency airfield repairs.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: For Chinese children, to explore whether air pollution increases the incidence of allergic rhinitis in children. Condition being studied: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common chronic inflammatory disease in the upper airways, causing nasal congestion, itching, runny nose, and sneezing. It has serious impacts on people's quality of lives, and affects economic growth indirectly. Epidemiological studies revealed that 10% to 40% of the population were suffering from AR worldwide. In addition, children are more likely to develop allergic rhinitis than adults. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children is 25% worldwide, and 4% ~ 31% in China. Eligibility criteria: (1) Trials in which children were AR, and the diagnosis of "AR" was in line with the international guidelines. (2) Children’s age was limited of 0-18 years, and they were born and lived in China and at least one year of exposure to air pollution.(3) Air pollutant concentration in the test was derived from the mean value of data provided by ambient air detectors. (Include NO2, SO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5) (4) Literatures only include cross-sectional studies, cohort and case-control studies. (5) All of these articles provide data that allows us to calculate 95% confidence interval (CI) of the influence of air pollutants on AR. (6) Trials published in English only.

Full text
Abstract:
We used eye tracking to measure visual attention to tobacco products and pro- and anti-tobacco advertisements (pro-ads and anti-ads) during a shopping task in a three-dimensional virtual convenience store. We used eye-tracking hardware to track the percentage of fixations (number of times the eye was essentially stationary; F) and dwell time (time spent looking at an object; DT) for several categories of objects and ads for 30 adult current cigarette smokers. We used Wald F-tests to compare fixations and dwell time across categories, adjusting comparisons of ads by the number of each type of ad. Overall, unadjusted for the number of each object, participants focused significantly greater attention on snacks and drinks and tobacco products than ads (all P<0.005). Adjusting for the number of each type of ad viewed, participants devoted significantly greater visual attention to pro-ads than anti-ads or ads unrelated to tobacco (P<0.001). Visual attention for anti-ads was significantly greater when the ads were placed on the store’s external walls or hung from the ceiling than when placed on the gas pump or floor (P<0.005). In a cluttered convenience store environment, anti-ads at the point of sale have to compete with many other stimuli. Restrictions on tobacco product displays and advertisements at the point of sale could reduce the stimuli that attract smokers’ attention away from anti-ads.
