Abstract:
Situated within the historiography of transnational child adoption, this dissertation explores the history of transnational child adoption from Vietnam by Americans in the Vietnam War. This story of Vietnamese adoption begins with comparing and contrasting representations of American and Vietnamese parenthood during the War. While American servicemen and women were highly praised for their humanitarianism in Vietnam and portrayed as good mothers and fathers to Vietnamese children, Vietnamese women were depicted as prostitutes, bar girls, and potential enemies in American public memory. This dissertation argues that the sexualized representation of Vietnamese women and the focus on American humanitarianism provided justifications for the transnational adoption of Vietnamese children but concealed the violence of the War that led to the displacement of Vietnamese children in the very beginning. It also shows how racial and religious relations in the U.S. complicated the picture of Vietnamese adoption. African American civil rights movement at home motivated black social workers to fight for the rights of black families to adopt black children domestically and transnationally. Meanwhile, American adoptive parents were subject to the scrutiny of Catholic orphanage directors in Vietnam and American social workers who tried to uphold religious matching in adoption. Finally, this dissertation ends with exploring controversies around Operation Babylift, a US government-sponsored evacuation of Vietnamese “orphans” to the US. Labeled as a humanitarian operation, the Babylift invoked criticism over its morality as more than 130 children were killed by an airplane crash and hundreds of children ended up being illegally brought to the US for adoption.

Malin, Lan Marie. "The communication implications and related experiences associated with transracially adopting a child from Vietnam." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4661.

Abstract:
This study investigated the communication experiences of adoptive parents of children transracially adopted from Vietnam. Though adoption has been extensively studied in communication research, transracial adoptions involving children from Vietnam has not. Thus, this study examined adoptive parent communication experiences using dialectic theory and relational dialectics. By examining adoptive parents' communication with their adopted child and others, we can determine tensions that occur in different communication experiences. Data were collected through eight qualitative in-depth interviews conducted with adoptive parents of children from Vietnam. Openness with both strangers and the adopted child(ren) and preservation of key aspects of the adopted children's original culture emerged as themes in adoptive parent communication. Theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a case study of two Vietnamese primary schools’ implementation of English language bilingual education to support economic and social reform in Vietnam. The study found that bilingual curricula are adopted differently depending on whether the schools are public or private; the former adopt a nationally-based curriculum while the latter use imported curricula, often in the form of textbooks. The respective curricula influence staff recruitment and parental expectations, and pedagogical issues including misalignments between students’ proficiency levels and curriculum objectives. To be more effective, future bilingual education programs need to engage more closely with Vietnamese contextual conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
Research and development of Bt rice in Southeast Asia has been overshadowed by the contentious debate over the potential release of transgenic food crops into the region. The study provides empirical evidence on the potential size and distribution of economic benefits of adopting Bt Indica rice in the Philippines and Vietnam through the years 2000 to 2020. Total welfare gains from Bt rice are projected at 618.8 million USD (discounted at 5 percent) and aggregate benefits by region are projected at 269.6 million USD for the Philippines, 329.1 million USD for Vietnam, and 20.1 million USD for the rest of the world. Simulation results indicate that producers in both countries will capture 66.5 percent of the total welfare effect from Bt rice adoption, 25.9 percent will accrue to consumers, 3 percent to the rest of the world, and the loss in Philippine government revenue accounts for 4.6 percent of the total welfare effect. The study also reports how other factors will determine the size and distribution of economic benefits of Bt rice.

Fintech has become more popular term recently, which is short for the phrase “Finance Technology”. Fintech is known as the innovation in finance service, which will be predicted to threat the current services of traditional banks. But this change is also predicted to create the positive transformation in Finance, especially to the developing countries with the high rate of unbanked account users and the dramatical increase of mobile users. However, the adoption rate of Fintech in developing countries, including Vietnam is still really low. To solve this problem, finding the factors affecting adoption is really necessary. Therefore, this research will define and investigate the key factors affecting adoption of Fintech in context of Vietnam and we will summarise these key factors into a research model basing on The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) which shows how the consumer process and some other previous researches. Furthermore, we will use MoMo, which is one of the most successful Fintech in Vietnam as a case study to examine this model. The data from feedback of MoMo users will be collected through the survey and then was coded into SPSS . Finally, we will use Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze the data. The result showed that factors such as Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Credibility, Perceived Self-Efficacy and Perceived Subjective Norms has positive effect on adoption of Fintech and Perceived Finance Cost has negative effect on the adoption of Fintech in Vietnam, while other factor Perceived Usefulness don’t have significant influence on adoption of Fintech in Vietnam.

With the development of IT, e-commerce and international trade, e-payment becomes an indispensable payment trend in a modern society. E-payment has been developed and introduced in many developed countries for a long time, but it is still the phase of developing in Vietnam. E-payment in Vietnam has been applied for more than 10 years, marking a significant development in recent years, in which personal innovativeness should be mentioned as an impulse factor. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting to the adoption of e-payment using in Vietnam and use personal innovativeness as a moderator to those relationships. The study based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with two important factors: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, along with two other factors: perceived risk and information on e-payment system, and those factors are predicted to have huge impact on the e-payment adoption in Vietnam. The study uses a quality approach to survey 370 Vietnamese users in two main cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. The results support almost hypotheses, however, the role of personal innovativeness as a moderator does not clearly, but it defines that personal innovativeness in IT tends to effect directly on e-payment use more than moderator effect that is out of our predicted. This study exploits and analysis the process of e-payment adoption in Vietnam, a developing country case. We expect to provide bankers and government with more information about the adoption of e-payment in Vietnam. Discussions and suggestion are explained the results in research and practice.

Although mobile banking has been introduced in Vietnam market since 2003, reports on mobile banking service in Vietnam show that the percentage of mobile banking user among mobile subscriptions is still very low and potential user may not be using this service, despite their availability. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify the factors determining Vietnamese users’ acceptance of mobile banking. This study applied Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which has been considerably used to predict whether an individual will accept and voluntarily use information technology, with focus on two important factors: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Supported by literature review, the study extended TAM by adding more factors: perceived risks, facilitating condition and personal innovativeness in technology which are predicted to have noticeable impact on mobile- banking adoption in Vietnam. Data collected from 159 respondents in Vietnam were tested against the extended TAM, using SPSS software. The result strongly supported all the hypotheses in predicting users’ intention to adopt mobile banking and indicated important role of personal innovativeness in technology in turning users’ intention to actual usage. The study also suggested bankers and mobile network providers in Vietnam utilizing marketing communication tools to encourage personal innovativeness factor in order to increase the actual adoption rate of mobile banking.

Internet banking is one of the cutting edge services of banks nowadays. As a matter of fact, ratio of Internet banking users in Vietnam, comparing with other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, is not high. Therefore, this study aims to develop a model of the factors affecting intention to use Internet banking as well as to measure the impact degree of these factors on the intention. 210 valid samples were collected, giving a response rate of 75 percent. Collected data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. The regression result showed that five groups of factors are affecting the intention to adopt Internet banking. In which, the most powerful factor is trust, followed by security, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and the last is privacy. In contrast, the hypothesis of government support was found to be not significant. Base on original Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study added other factors to existing variables used in TAM. This model as a result from research under Vietnamese perspective, can be applied to other developing countries which are relatively new to online banking. Besides theoretical implications, this study also provided some guidance for banking managers in improvement Internet banking services. Banks of operators should focus more on creating the sense of trust among customers and enhancing more on the security of the system. In addition, bank of operators should improve privacy and security to increase customer’s trust in the sensitive environment of Internet banking. Bank of operators could simplify interface as well as tasks on their website for ease of use. Lastly, bank of operators should create useful characteristics and enhance customers’ awareness about them.

Nowadays, the Internet and Web technology have widely impacted on many different industries, especially tourism and hospitality industry. Despite the advantages of information technologies for business, their adoption in developing countries enterprises is not high. It seems that internet commerce in Vietnam falls short when compared to the neighboring nations. On the other hand, Vietnam is considered as one of the safest tourist destinations, yet the number of international tourists to Vietnam is still modest. As a reason, tourism marketing has been identified as one of the most problematic areas, of which, e-marketing activities have received little attention and investment. Especially, even with hotels recognized as the most aggressive adopters of e-marketing in all areas of tourism industry, the use of Internet and Web technologies by Vietnam hotels was primarily for advertising, not for providing a fully interactive site with the full range of marketing functions. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors supporting the adoption and diffusion of the Internet and Web technologies in Vietnam hotel marketing. With this purpose, a research framework including three groups of factors (organizational, innovational and environmental) was proposed based on organizational innovation literature review. An empirical study using self-administered survey questionnaire and statistical tools will be conducted to validate the proposed framework. The results indicate that there are three main groups of factors affecting the adoption of Internet and web technology in Vietnam hotel marketing including: organizational factors in terms of top management support, and CEO’s attitude; innovation factors in term of perceived benefits, organizational compatibility and ease of use; environmental factors in term of competitive pressure, customer power and level of government. Therefore, implications of the findings for both managerial and governmental perspectives; and directions for future research are discussed.

In highly competitive environment nowadays, E-commerce can be considered as an important source of competitive advantage for most of enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Before, the researches focused mainly on the adoption of E-commerce in developed countries. However, today, with the steady development of economy, developing countries (including Vietnam) have gained more and more attentions of researchers. Thus, the studies in this field are rising. The concept “E-commerce” appeared when business organizations began to realize the important role of Internet as a means for conducting business. According to Chaudhury & Kuiboer (2002), E-commerce has been significantly contributed in reducing in costs of doing business, improving product/service quality, attracting new customers and suppliers, and developing new ways for product distribution. It brings benefits not only to large enterprises but also SMEs. Over the last few years, after Vietnam implemented Reform (Doi Moi) policy and opened its market, a number of Vietnamese SMEs have implemented and gained benefits from it. The purpose of this study is to examine and to understand more clearly the influence of relevant factors on the acceptance of SMEs’ employees, who directly use E-commerce in their enterprises. A research framework was developed and seven hypotheses were formulated to test the relationships. Developing and testing hypotheses by using survey data from 340 employees of SMEs in Nam Dinh province, in Viet Nam. This research employed SPSS 13.0 to analyze the collected data to test the relationships among factors and all items require five-point Likert-scale. Support was found for all of the seven hypotheses formulated. The results indicate the positive relationships among Information quality, System quality, Intention to Use, User Satisfaction and E-commerce Adoption.

Logistics plays an important role as a link that helps connect every part of supply chain. Following the trend of the digitization, automation, industrialization, the Fourth Industrial revolution was revived in 2011 in Germany. After eight years since this term first published, it has been adopted in many areas and helps firm achieved much success, Logistics is also one of the potential field to implement this technology in the near future. Since these reasons, this research attempts to find out the key factors that lead the adoption of Industry 4.0 in Logistics companies. The study purposes to complete the definition of Industry 4.0 and then find out crucial elements to adopt Industry 4.0 from management perspective. In this paper, there are two different backgrounds of two nations that are Taiwan and Vietnam, thus shows the contrast of perception of Industry 4.0 revolution significantly. The paper was adopted the Technology Acceptance Model theory to investigate the research model, that there are four main elements affect the implementation of Industry 4.0 in both Taiwan and Vietnam, which are Industry 4.0 Perceived of usefulness (POU), Industry 4.0 Perceived ese of use (PEOU), Firm’s internal factors and Firm external factors. We used a set of questionnaire to collect the data from Logistics companies in these two countries. Since this such a new issue, firstly we used Modified Delphi method to form the final survey, then the fsQCA method was applied to find out the ultimate results. The study figured out there are small differences in the causal components that drive Industry 4.0 adoption in these two countries. But overall, these four elements have positive relation with the intention to use Industry 4.0 in the investigated firms.

Mobile phone has currently become a vital part of our daily life. With the rapid changes of the technology, improvements in wireless technologies and increased mobile handsets features, many financial institutions and mobile phone service providers are teaming up to offer a variety of services through mobile phones, such as mobile banking services. That creates an evolving trend in mobile banking activities on a global scale. However, in Vietnam and Taiwan, the number of people who decide to adopt these technologies is still relatively low. Thus, there is a need to assess the acceptance of such technologies to establish factors that hinder or promote customer intention to use mobile banking (MB). This study investigates the customer intention to use mobile banking services by using elements of an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Service Quality (SERVQUAL). This research combines the variables “performance expectancy”, “effort expectancy”, “social influence”, “facilitating conditions”, “attitude”, “subjective norm”, “perceived behavioral control”, “tangibles”, “reliability”, “responsiveness”, “assurance”, “empathy”, “perceived service quality”, “attitude of use”, and “demographic” in a proposed model to reflect consumer intention to use mobile banking. Results indicate that “empathy” and “perceived behavioral control” are significant with respect to the Vietnamese customer intention to use mobile banking service. While in case of Taiwan, “assurance” contributes the most in explaining the factor of intention of mobile banking adoption. Similar with previous studies, “social influence” was not significant in explaining mobile banking adoption in Vietnam and Taiwan. The results of the data analysis contributes to the body of knowledge by demonstrating that the above factors are critical in intention to use mobile banking in Vietnam and Taiwan. The implications of the results form a good basis for providing practical recommendations to leaders of commercial banks, third-party payment companies and directions for further work.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a detailed historical analysis of the origins of the policy and practice of intercountry adoption – the legal adoption of children from overseas – in Australia. Efforts by Australian families to adopt children from overseas were made in the years immediately following the Second World War, but it was not until the Vietnam War that significant numbers of adopted children began to arrive in Australia. This thesis focuses on the period from 1968, when the first Vietnamese children were adopted, up until Operation Babylift in 1975, and examines the development of state and Commonwealth government policies towards intercountry adoption. Through an examination of the relationship between state and Commonwealth government authorities, international social welfare organisations, volunteer groups and individual adoptive parents, it argues that each phase of the development of adoption policy was shaped by broader political considerations, such as foreign affairs, defence and immigration policies, moreso than any consideration for the interests of the children themselves.

E-commerce can be seen as an important source of competitive advantages for most of enterprises in such a progressively competitive environment nowadays, especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Most studies in the past focused mainly on the e-commerce adoption in developed countries. However, recently, researchers have increasingly started to explore and predict factors affect e-commerce adoption among SMEs in developing countries (including Vietnam) since these countries have achieved the steady economy development. The purpose of this study is to examine and deeply understand the influence of internal and external factors on e-commerce adoption intention by SMEs in Vietnam as well as compare these factors with other countries in South-east Asia (Thailand and Malaysia). The distinction into internal and external factors is made to distinguish between organization specific factors and factors that are imposed from outside the organization in the adoption decision and deployment process of e-commerce. This study tested ten hypotheses on factors that influence e-commerce adoption intention with empirical data from a sample of 100 SMEs in Vietnam. The results indicated that the resources of enterprise, the perceived relative advantages, the complexity and compatibility of innovation, the intensity of competition, the pressure from suppliers and buyers, the level of government support, and the national infrastructure have significant impact on e-commerce adoption intention by SMEs in Vietnam.

The e-commerce market in Vietnam is still very large. However, for the sustainable development needs the strong hand of authority. Perhaps the most challenging concept in marketing associated with capturing the reason why customers leave such actions. Such knowledge is considered key to the marketing experts when they have insight into customer behavior. This will help them understand what is important to customers and make a significant impact on the customers’ decision. The purpose of this study is to explore consumer behavior in e-commerce in Vietnam with the main objectives: (1) to understand the factors effecting to customers’ intention in e-commerce in Vietnam, (2) to understand the relationship between intention and behavior of e-commerce customer in Vietnam, (3) how to meet customers’ needs with e-commerce in Vietnam in order to propose solutions helping this one improve customers’ satisfaction, (4) to apply theory TPB to explain the customer behavior in e-commerce. The findings of this study have significant implications in the perspective of research on e-Commerce consumer’s behavior. The study provides further evidence on the appropriateness of using the TPB model to measure the different dimensions of actual usage on e-Commerce. The findings of the study also suggest important practical implications for businesses. It is evident from this study that to convert Internet browsers into real buyers, Attitude toward the behavior, Subjective Norms, Perceived Behavioral Control must be enhanced and the risk reduced. From the perspective of a consumer’s perceived risk, the consumer is willing to purchase product/service from an online vendor that is perceived low risk. As shown in the results of our study, consumers consider the risk (i.e., financial risk, time risk) as one of the important factors when they purchase on the Internet. Thus, diminishing such risk is considerably important to online vendors. To lower the PRT, online vendors should establish a robust mechanism, which utilize state-of-art Internet technologies.

The benefits of E-Teaching/Learning System (ET/LS) will not be maximized unless users accept to use the system. This study is one of the few attempts to investigate determinants of ET/LS adoption in universities of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The models integrated determinants from the well-established technology acceptance model as well as technological and psychological facet cited in the research literature. Use propensity was also examined as a moderating role in order to deepen the understanding of ET/LS adoption intention. Data were collected from lecturers and students in ten universities of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to conduct both hypothesis test and moderation test. Based on data analysis from questionnaire of 299 subjects, research findings are obtained showing that (1) adoption intention is determined by adoption attitude and both technological and psychological are strongly associated with the users’ attitude and intention of using ET/LS, (2) not all single factor in two facets have significant influence on adoption attitude, and (3) user type significantly moderates the effect of each factor of ET/LS on adoption attitude. Implications for theory building, practical management and future research are also discussed.

"Not Quite/ Just the Same/ Different: the Construction of Identity in Vietnamese War Orphans Adopted by White Parents." University of Technology, Sydney. Social Inquiry, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/316.

Full text
Abstract:
Global diasporas caused by wars carry many streams of people - in the 1970s one of these streams contained orphans from Vietnam delivered to white parents in the West. On arrival, the social expectation was that these children would blend seamlessly into the culture of their adoptive parents. Now some adoptees, as adults, reflect on their lives as 'Asian' or racially 'Other' children in white societies, charting the critical points in their maturation. This thesis interrogates their life histories to explore the role of birth-culture in the self-definition of people removed from that culture at birth or in childhood. Thirteen adult adopted Vietnamese participants were interviewed. These interviews provided qualitative data on issues of racial and cultural identity. These data were developed and analysed, using a framework drawn from symbolic interactionism and cultural studies, in order to reveal the interpersonal dynamics in which people were involved, and the broader cultural relations that sustained them. The findings reveal that in early childhood the adopted Vietnamese identity process was shaped by a series of identifications with, and affirmations of, sharing their adoptive parents racial and cultural identity. Such identifications were then challenged once the adoptees entered society and were seen by others as different. The participants' attempts to locate a secure sense of self and identity within the world they are placed in are disturbed by numerous uncertainties surrounding racial and cultural difference. One of the most crucial uncertainties is the adopted Vietnamese knowledge about their cultural background. While most felt they lacked positive knowledge about Vietnam and racial diversity, their sense of identity was unsettled by experiences with racism and negative cultural stereotypes throughout their late childhood to adolescence. As their recognition and acceptance of their difference develops in adulthood, they experience a degree of empowerment due to their being able to access more knowledge about their cultural background and a greater appreciation of racial diversity. Many participants have formed closer ties with other people born in Vietnam, most notably other adoptees; most returned to visit Vietnam. The thesis concludes that those adoptees who were able to develop an understanding of the Vietnamese and other backgrounds to their complex identities, tended to be more integrated as adults than those who either rejected or were unable to come to terms with their Vietnamese ancestry.

In recent decade, the cutting-edge development of the information and communication technology has hugely creating the opportunity for individuals, institutes or the enterprise as a whole in the way of doing business whether in the physical world or in the virtual one. Obviously beyond the traditional trade, what the current society demands are not only good products or services but also real-time as well as correct information which can surpass their counterparts or competitors. As in the same token, the e-Government also appeared in leaps and bounds in the twentieth century, which recently developed rapidly in Vietnam as well. Accordingly, this study aims to explore how fast the e-government has gone in Vietnam and how well the e-government has been implemented and adopted in Vietnam, where in the current research the determinant factors influencing e-government adoption have been explored and analyzed in Vietnam. The survey in this study has targeted a huge number of Vietnam people who to some extent have enough understanding of Vietnamese e-Government operation. Upon the data collection and analysis, descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses were carried out. The findings have shown that four determinant factors, i.e., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating condition have significant impacts on e-government adoption. Equally important, different adoption behavior on different education levels, genders, and marital status are also distinctively identified in the current study. All of them indicate the diverse requirements and the discrepancies in every walk of life in Vietnam.

Information and communication technology and the Internet have reshaped the mind and life of many people around the globe. By taking advantages of these technologies, governments around the world are introducing e-government services to better serve their citizens. One of the primary goals in building a Lai Chau e-government system is to provide online business registration services to the citizens and businesses of Lai Chau, Vietnam. This study is to examine factors influencing users’ adoption of the online business license service portal in Lai Chau. Based on literature review, we propose a research model founded on the well-known technology acceptance model (TAM). Our model theorizes that external variables including local government support, communication and service quality can affect users’ perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness in TAM. An empirical study was conducted to validate the proposed model. Questionnaires based on validated items from previous studies were distributed to several work places in Lau Chau. A total of 107 complete responses were collected for statistical analysis. Our results show that each hypothesis in the research model is supported with a high significance level. Managerial implications for the e-government service operators will be discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Mekong delta region, rodents are one of the major pests that rice farmers need to control regularly using physical and chemical methods. Chemical methods are more commonly used because they are convenient. The Community Trap Barriers System (CTBS) is a new environmentally-friendly, physical rodent control method. Despite being introduced to farmers, the adoption has been slow because the technology requires collective adoption to overcome cost constraints. In this study, collective use of this method was found to be challenging because of two main reasons. First, farmers found it difficult to manage the trap barrier system as a common pool resource. Second, collective use at the field level is constrained by the difficulties to obtain consensus among farmers in the adoption area. Current levels of social capital, the source of collective action, at the field level were found to be in decline when compared with those in the past. The decline is attributed to the changes in relationships between farmers at the field level. Farmers are unable to maintain their traditional networks which were grounded on kin, neighbour, and friendship relations. In addition, social and economic development has improved rural lifestyles but this has resulted in a lack of need for the social capital represented by those traditional relationships, especially for the rice farming practice. The adoption of the CTBS, as well as other collective based technologies will be challenging unless there are efforts to improve social capital at the field level. This may well be best achieved at the local government level because farmers have a strong reliance on the government to facilitate the social capital generation process.

Pneumonia is one of the leading killers of children in Vietnam. Pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics, if symptoms are recognized early. However, across the region it is limited for the people who live in rural or remote areas to obtain simple life-saving interventions for pneumonia. Telemedicine has been introduced to overcome distance so that people can get immediate access to medical knowledge and appropriate health care. This study investigated factors influencing on telemedicine adoption process of healthcare organizations in Vietnam. TOE framework was applied to conduct the necessary theoretical background in order to support for the development of relevant hypothesis. The new construct named knowledge translation was also created to examine its effect to telemedicine adoption process, especially at post-adoption level, in term of pneumonia prevention. A total of 301 validated responses were collected for the data analysis. The results of this study employed that knowledge translation played the most crucial role in encouraging healthcare professionals to continue using telemedicine technology. Besides, the supports from top managers and government are also important if healthcare organizations want to implement telemedicine. Moreover, organizations will concern about whether telemedicine technology is easily used by their employees. The contributions, limitations and suggestions for future research of this study were all discussed.
