Abstract:
Adolescent depression is highly prevalent, associated with negative effects and likely to recur, this provides a cogent argument for finding sustainable, cost-effective, developmentally appropriate approaches to preventing depression. Although there is good evidence to support efficacy, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of programs preventing adolescent depression. Thus the primary aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of a universal, school-based, adolescent depression prevention program when implemented by teachers and local mental health professionals. Participants were 1003 secondary school students drawn from three pairs of matched Year 9 cohorts. The three pairs were assigned to either: (a) Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP), an 11-session school-based resilience program delivered as part of the school curriculum (n = 522) or (b) a comparison condition (n = 481). All students completed measures of depressive symptoms and hopelessness at pre-intervention, post-intervention and 6-month follow-up. The intervention group completed quantitative and qualitative evaluations of perceived program benefit. Small program effects on depressive symptoms for the RAP group were evident for the whole group at post-intervention (ES = 0.30) and for girls only at follow-up (ES = 0.35). However, both boys' and girls' self-reports indicated very positive overall benefits from the RAP intervention. Teachers were not less effective as group leaders than mental health professionals in terms of outcomes on depression measures, perceived program benefits or acceptability to students. Public health implications of this population-based approach are discussed in the light of small effects, high recruitment rates and potential use of sustainable school resources.

Resumo: Na sociedade contemporânea, os meios de comunicação social assumem um papel central nas atividades em geral, configurando-se como uma ferramenta fundamental para o exercício da cidadania e para a difusão do conhecimento, situação constatada também no campo da alimentação e da nutrição. O tema alimentação e nutrição é cada vez mais evidenciado nas diversas mídias; uma presença que tem sido valorizada por seu potencial em contribuir com a promoção da alimentação saudável e da saúde; mas também, tem sido questionada quanto à credibilidade e à adequação, muitas vezes, comprometidas por influências de mercado como, por exemplo, as determinadas pela indústria da estética. Diante desta problemática, nesta dissertação objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade dos conteúdos relacionados ao tema alimentação e nutrição das revistas on-line femininas para adolescentes Capricho e Todateen. Foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa através do método Análise do Conteúdo em associação a referenciais teórico-conceituais dos Estudos Culturais. O corpus de análise foi constituído por 111 textos (68 textos da revista on-line Capricho e 43 textos da revista on-line Todateen). O corpus foi selecionado através de busca no site das revistas Capricho e Todateen com palavras-chave relacionadas ao tema alimentação e nutrição, adotando-se o recorte temporal de um ano (ano de 2012). Os principais resultados e análises dos textos do corpus foram: as celebridades foram as fontes de informação preferenciais; a função principal das fontes foi relatar experiências pessoais; a abordagem foi predominantemente fatual; a utilização de termos linguísticos foi inadequada com prejuízo de sentido; a ocorrência de informações promotoras de práticas alimentares saudáveis foi reduzida; assuntos de interesse público praticamente não entraram em pauta; o enquadramento caracterizou-se pela prevalência da dimensão biológica da alimentação e nutrição com foco na estética e pela concepção sobre alimentação e nutrição baseada mais na ideia de dieta restritiva do que de alimentação saudável. Os resultados obtidos permitem afirmar que os conteúdos das revistas analisadas não apresentam qualidade satisfatória e potencial para contribuir com a segurança alimentar e nutricional das adolescentes
Abstract: In modern society, the media play a central role in different sectors, since they appear as a fundamental tool for the exercise of citizenship and the dissemination of knowledge - a situation that is also verified in the fields of alimentation and nutrition . The topic of alimentation and nutrition is increasingly noticeable in various media: this presence has been valued for its potential to contribute to the promotion of healthy nutrition and health in general; however, it has also been questioned as to its credibility and adequacy which are often compromised by market influences (determined by the esthetic industry, for instance). Given these issues, this dissertation sought to analyze the quality of the content related to the topic of alimentation and nutrition in two online teen magazines - Todateen and Capricho. A qualitative research was performed using the Content Analysis method in combination with theoretical and conceptual frameworks of the Cultural Studies. The corpus for analysis consisted of 111 texts (68 texts of the online magazine Capricho and 43 texts of the online magazine Todateen). The corpus was selected by searching in the websites of the magazines Capricho and Todateen using keywords related to the topics of alimentation and nutrition, and we selected the time frame of one year (year 2012). The main results and analysis of the texts in the corpus were: celebrities were always the preferred sources of information; the main role of the sources was to report personal experiences; the approach was predominantly factual; the use of linguistic terms was inadequate and presented a loss of meaning; the occurrence of information promoting healthy nutrition practices was reduced; issues of public interest hardly entered on the agenda; the framework was characterized by the prevalence of a biological dimension for alimentation and nutrition with a focus on esthetics, and the concepts of alimentation and nutrition were more based on the idea of a restrictive diet than on healthy eating. These results allow us to affirm that the contents of the magazines analyzed do not present satisfactory quality and potential to contribute to alimentation and nutrition safety of adolescents

Abstract:
Introdução: O padrão alimentar, com alto teor de gordura, colesterol, açúcar refinado e o baixo teor de ácido graxos poliinsaturados e fibras presente na dieta dos adolescentes, é considerado o principal responsável pelo aumento da morbidade e mortalidade em adultos, pois resulta em aumento da prevalência de obesidade e conseqüentemente de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis. Objetivo: Avaliar a dieta habitual qualitativa e quantitativamente de adolescentes de ambos os sexos de uma Escola Estadual do Município de São Paulo - SP. Casuística e Métodos: Foram avaliados adolescentes de ambos os gêneros entre 14 e 18 anos e 11 meses de idade, em quatro momentos diferentes durante seis meses. Utilizou-se o Recordatório 24 horas para avaliar o consumo alimentar e os dados foram processados pelo software Virtual Nutri. As análises estatísticas (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, teste T Student bicaudal para amostras repetidas, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test e McNemar) foram realizadas pelo SPSS 11.0. Resultados: O consumo de gordura total foi superior a 30% em todos os dias de análise; o consumo de fibras obteve uma tendência de melhora nos dias úteis, assim como a gordura insaturada; o alimento com consumo mais freqüente foi o arroz e o consumo dos salgados (pão de queijo, coxinha, esfiha, etc.) aumentou durante os dias da semana. O café da manhã teve um declínio de consumo durante o feriado. Conclusões: O conhecimento do da dieta habitual dos adolescentes possibilita o planejamento de políticas públicas de saúde voltadas à nutrição, orientações dietéticas específicas ao grupo e possíveis intervenções.
Introduction: High amounts of fat, cholesterol, refined sugar, and low amounts of fat acid and fibers present in the diets of adolescents is results in high rates of obesity, chronic non-communicable diseases, and death in adults. Objective: Evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the daily eating habits of adolescent males and females from a São Paulo city state school. Methods: Students between the ages of 14 years and 18 years 11 months old in four different times in a six month period were evaluated. The students logged their food intake over a 24 hour period and the data was processed by the Virtual Nutri software. The statistical analysis (Kolmogorov-Smirnow, T Student test for two repeated samples, Wilcoxon Signed Tank Test, and McNemar) was made by SPSS 11.0. Results: For every day of the test, fat accounted for more than 30% of the caloric intake. The fiber intake showed a tendency to improve on week days when compared with weekends, as did the intake of unsaturated fats. The food most frequently consumed was rice. Snacks were consumed mostly on the holiday, and during holidays the students frequently skipped breakfast. Conclusions: This study of the eating habits of adolescents can help shape the public policies of health, nutrition, and diet for specific groups and interventions.

Abstract:
Intuitive eating is defined as an adaptive eating process that involves focusing on internal hunger and satiety to guide eating behavior, using those physiological cues rather than emotions to determine when to eat, and choosing what to eat based upon preference and not external rules and expectations. The purpose of this study was to examine intuitive eating within the context of contemporary sociocultural models of eating in 701 early adolescent boys and 769 early adolescent girls. Support was found for the model and suggested that pressures to lose weight or gain muscle, restrictive messages about food from caregivers, and internalization of the thin ideal were related to the early adolescents’ intuitive eating behaviors, suggesting that many of the sociocultural variables that have been found to impact disordered eating are salient for understanding healthy eating behaviors. However, the relations among many of the variables, as well as the model’s ability to explain intuitive eating overall, were stronger in girls than in boys. These findings can be used to help parents and schools begin to teach early adolescents about intuitive eating and how they can resist external pressures that may negatively influence their eating behaviors.

Abstract:
Percebe-se, na contemporaneidade, um crescente movimento, no meio adolescente, de busca de mecanismos identificatórios através do pertencimento a grupos formais e/ou informais. Neste contexto, situam-se as Tribos Urbanas que, segundo Michel Maffesoli (2006) configuram-se como um fenômeno cultural, agregando adolescentes de diferentes níveis sócioeconômicos com os mais variados interesses. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa objetivou investigar o sentido de pertença a uma Tribo Urbana para a construção da identidade adolescente. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa em que, a partir de uma análise metodológica na perspectiva fenomenológica existencial, utilizando entrevistas semidirigidas, abordou adolescentes, de ambos os sexos, numa faixa etária compreendida entre 18 a 20 anos, de qualquer nível sócio-econômico, pertencentes à Tribo Urbana de Metaleiros recifenses. Os resultados obtidos trouxeram ricas contribuições para a compreensão do sentido desta pertença e sua importância no universo simbólico do adolescente. Contrariando o senso comum que as Tribos Urbanas agregam "desocupados" e/ou "marginais"; percebemos que estas se constituem como espaços propiciadores de crescimento pessoal, social e cultural. Além disso, as entrevistas revelaram que as Tribos Urbanas desempenham um relevante papel, para os adolescentes metaleiros, como mediadora entre o "desligamento" do ambiente familiar e a inserção no meio social. Esta pertença, ainda, configura-se como um dispositivo para a construção de mecanismos de identificação e diferenciação, fundamentais na estruturação da identidade adolescente. Acredita-se que este trabalho possa oferecer subsídios para um maior entendimento dos mecanismos que operam na construção da identidade adolescente, possibilitando uma melhor compreensão acerca da necessidade gregária dos jovens, minimizando, assim, a representação social negativa das Tribos Urbanas de adolescentes
On percoit, dans la culture contemporaine, un mouvement croissant, dans les milieux dadolescents, de recherche de mécanismes didentification par lappartenance à des groupes formels et/ou informels. Dans ce contexte sinscrivent les Tribus Urbaines qui, selon Michel Maffesoli (2006) se configurent comme un phénomène culturel, agrégeant des adolescents/adolescentes de divers niveaux socio-économiques avec les intérêts les plus variés. Dans cette foulée, la présente recherche sest fixé comme objectif détudier le sens de lappartenance à une Tribu Urbaine pour la construction de lidentité adolescente. Il sagit dune recherche qualitative dans laquelle, à partir dune analyse méthodologique dans la perspective de la phénoménologie existentielle on a utilisé des entrevues semi-dirigées avec des adolescents des deux sexes dans la tranche dâge des 18-20 ans, de tout niveau socioéconomique et appartenant à la Tribu Urbaine des Metaleiros (Rock Heavy Metal) de Recife. Les résultats obtenus ont apporté de riches contributions pour la compréhension du sens de cette appartenance et de son importance dans lunivers symbolique de ladolescent. Au contraire du sens commun pour qui les Tribus Urbaines réunissent des faînéants e/ou des marginaux, nous avons perçu quelles constituent des espaces propices à la croissance personnelle, sociale et culturelle. En plus, les entrevues ont révélé que les Tribus Urbaines accomplissent un rôle pertinent pour les adolescents metaleiros, dintermédiaire entre la séparation de lentourage familial et linsertion dans le milieu social. Cette appartenance se présente en plus comme un dispositif pour la construction de mécanismes didentification et de différentiation, fondamentaux pour la structuration de lidentité adolescente. Nous pensons que ce travail peut offrir des subsides pour un meilleur entendement des mécanismes en jeu dans la construction de lidentité adolescente, permettant une meilleure compréhension de la nécessité grégaire des jeunes, tout en minimisant ainsi la représentation négative des Tribus Urbaines dadolescents

Nesta dissertação analisamos resultados de uma investigação empírica que teve por objetivo problematizar o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente - ECA junto a adolescentes e professores, identificando representações por eles (com) partilhadas e os efeitos dessas representações na dinâmica da vida escolar. A pesquisa teve como fundamentação principal Moscovici (1978, 1994), Gatti (2005), Bobbio (2004), Arroyo (2002, 2004) e Freire (2000, 2003, 2006). Metodologicamente, a pesquisa caracterizou-se como um estudo de natureza qualitativa, utilizando-se dos “grupos focais” como principal procedimento de pesquisa para problematizar as representações. As questões que balizaram a pesquisa foram: quais são as representações partilhadas por adolescentes e professores a respeito do ECA? Que efeitos as representações de adolescentes e professores sobre o ECA têm sobre a dinâmica da vida escolar? Como se aproximam ou distanciam as representações de adolescentes e professores? Abstract:
In Australia, and internationally, approximately 14% of young people experience clinical mental health problems with an increase in the rate of psychopathology symptoms occurring during adolescence (Kessler et al., 2002; Sawyer et al., 2000). To date, no representative Australian studies have comprehensively examined the risk and protective factors associated with resilience and vulnerability during the initial years of adolescence. To fill this gap and provide better understanding of factors that may mitigate risk during this vulnerable period of developmental transition, the current thesis is a collection of studies that aimed to identify ecological risk and protective factors associated with resilience, competence, and vulnerability of young Australians. Adolescents’ functioning is specifically considered in the context of disruptions to the parent-child and parent-parent relationship. The first aim of the thesis was to identify the ecological risk and protective factors associated with psychopathology and vulnerability in young Australian adolescents. Previous research on developmental psychopathology, resilience, and ecological research was used to provide a theoretical framework for the selection of variables included. Based on the reoccurring salience of the family environment for functioning throughout the lifespan, the second aim was to identify the unique contribution of family relations to difficulties in adolescence. Theories and models of development, family relations, and parenting were applied to investigate the third aim which was to identify factors associated with adolescents’ positive adaption to disruptions in family relations.

A presente pesquisa é um estudo sobre os adolescentes inscritos no Projeto Legião Mirim, na cidade de Assis – SP, implantado por uma entidade filantrópica que tem por finalidade principal encaminhar jovens de nível econômico desfavorecido para o primeiro emprego. Objetivamos, basicamente, compreender o que tais indivíduos pensam sobre a adolescência, sobre as perspectivas em relação ao futuro e identificar quais os principais valores destacados por esses adolescentes. As razões que nos levaram a propor essa investigação dizem respeito ao fato de, como psicóloga, termos desenvolvido atividades com os adolescentes inseridos no “Projeto”. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual fizemos uso de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com 06 adolescentes de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 14 e 18 anos, com nível econômico desfavorecido, independentemente do grau de escolaridade e com diferentes credos religiosos. Como referencial teórico e metodológico, utilizamos autores de orientação psicanalítica, como Freud, Birman, Calligaris, Costa, Figueiredo, Herrmann, Mezan, Outeiral, entre outros. Os dados das entrevistas foram analisados no sentido de compreender o significado da fala dos sujeitos estudados. Concluímos que os adolescentes concebem a adolescência como uma fase de transição entre o ser criança e o adulto, onde solicitam tempo e apoio dos adultos nesse período. O Projeto é importante em suas vidas porque além de oferecer emprego para os mais carentes, os jovens encontraram um local para fazer cursos, adquirir novos conhecimentos e novas formas de relação afetiva. Eles destacaram valores como o estudo, a relação familiar, a amizade, a justiça, a honestidade e a preocupação com o futuro da sociedade. This research is an study about adolescents applied for Legião Mirim Project in Assis city - SP, introduced by a philanthropic entity which brings, as its mainly purpose, to guide financial underprivileged young people to find their first job. Our goals are, basically, to understand what such individuals think about the adolescence, about the perspectives related to their future and who the values detached for them. The reasons, which led us to propose this investigation, are connected to the fact, as a psychologist, we had developed activities with some adolescents that are involved on that “Project”. It’s about a qualitative research, of which we made use of halfstructured interviews with 06 students from both sexes, between 14 and 18 years old, with financial problems, independently their educational levels and with many different beliefs. As a theoretical and methodological reference, we have used author with psychoanalysis orientation, like Freud, Birman, Calligaris, Costa, Figueiredo, Herrmann, Mezan, Outeiral, and others. Some data from the interviews were analyzed in sense to realize the speech meanings from the studied individuals. We conclude that adolescents understand the adolescence years as a transition step between to be a child and to be an adult, when they solicit time and support from the adults on that period. The Project is important in their lives because, more than offer a job opportunity to the most careless, young people have found a place to have courses, to acquire new knowledge and new ways of affective relations. Abstract:
Este estudo transversal teve o objetivo de investigar o conhecimento de adolescentes de diferentes contextos sobre os seus próprios direitos. Participaram do estudo 101 adolescentes, com idades entre 12 e 17 anos (M=14,18; SD=1,09), sendo 68,3% do sexo feminino e 31,7% do sexo masculino. Os adolescentes foram agrupados por contextos: o G1 composto por aqueles que residem com suas famílias e freqüentam escolas públicas (45,5%), o G2, por jovens que vivem com suas famílias e estudam em escolas particulares (32,7%) e o G3 de adolescentes que moram em abrigos (21,8%). Foram aplicados um questionário para levantamento de dados biosociodemográficos, um sobre o conhecimento em direitos e um inventário de auto-relato sobre a situação de direitos. Houve diferença entre os contextos em relação a alguns dos direitos investigados. Os participantes que relataram perceber mais direitos não respeitados foram os não-brancos e cujos pais apresentavam escolaridade mais baixa, resultado que ressalta o legado de exclusão étnico-racial presente no país. Foi encontrada diferença significativa em relação à presença/ausência de conhecimento dos direitos, por sexo, idade, nível socioeconômico, grupo e vínculo com a família. Os direitos mais conhecidos foram: inclusão, participação, expressão, educação, lazer e proteção contra a violência e o trabalho. Já os direitos menos conhecidos foram: respeito, tratamento diferenciado do adulto quando em conflito com a lei, proteção contra o trabalho doméstico, liberdade de reunião e associação e de buscar orientação. Os resultados indicam que o macrossistema e o microssistema estão relacionados à visão dos adolescentes sobre seus direitos. Apontam, ainda, à necessidade de intervenções, enfatizando valores, os direitos menos reconhecidos e deveres da população infanto-juvenil.
This crossectional study aimed to investigate adolescents' knowledge, of different contexts, on their own rights. 101 adolescents, aged from 12 to 17 years old (M=14,18; SD=1,09), 68,3% female and 31,7% male were grouped by context: G1 - adolescents who live with their families and attend public schools (45,5%), G2 - those who live with their families and attende private school (32,7%) and G3 - those who live in shelters (21,8%). A biosociodemographic and knowledge of rights questionnaires and to a self report on adolescents' rights were administered. There was difference among the contexts regarding certain rights investigated. More not respected rights were found among no-white participants and those whose parents presented lower education level, result that emphasizes the historical legacy of present ethnic-racial exclusion in Brazil. The results revealed statistically significant sex, age, socioeconomic status, group and family links differences what refers to the knowledge of rights. The knownest rights were: inclusion, participation, expression, education, leisure and protection against the violence and the work. The less known rights were: respect, adult's differentiated treatment when in conflict with the law, the protection against the domestic work, the freedom of reunion/association and concerning searching for orientation. Results indicate that the macrossistem and the microssistem are associated with the adolescents' perception of their own rights. The results highlight the need for interventions, emphasizing values, recognition of rights and duties of the child-juvenile population.

Abstract:
Cette recherche s’intéresse à la façon singulière dont l’adolescent ou le jeune adulte suicidant se représente ses liens familiaux et extra-familiaux. Elle explore la façon dont ces jeunes s’inscrivent dans leur histoire familiale, se repèrent dans leur généalogie, mais aussi la façon dont ils construisent, dans le monde qui les entoure, leur réseau d’appartenance. Comprenant l’accès aux transmissions familiales et la possibilité de tisser un réseau de lien extra-familiaux, comme un élément capital de la construction identitaire, ce travail envisage l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’acte suicidaire de l’adolescent traduirait une revendication de l’unicité et de l’authenticité de son existence. L’intention de se faire exister serait plus prégnante que l’intention de se donner la mort. De telles conduites, à valeur ordalique, témoigneraient d’un affrontement avec le monde, dont l’enjeu serait de vivre plus. Elles amèneraient l’adolescent à s’imposer, inconsciemment, de frôler la mort pour se transformer, renaître, revivre après le traumatisme, pour enfin exister. A l’aide d’entretiens cliniques et d’outils d’évaluation systémique comprenant la réalisation de génogrammes libres et imaginaires, seize études de cas ont été réalisées. Ces données ont permis d’effectuer une analyse qualitative individuelle et groupale et, plus particulièrement une exploration familiale tri-générationnelle. Sans confirmer la valeur ordalique de la conduite suicidaire, nos résultas suggèrent que les jeunes rencontrés tentent de se faire exister en cherchant une enveloppe généalogique mais aussi affiliative, contenante au sein de laquelle ils se sentent inscrits et reconnus. Le sentiment d'appartenance qui permet la différenciation et qui donne sens à l’existence fait défaut chez tous. Ces résultats ouvrent une piste de réflexion sur la signification du geste suicidaire à l’adolescence: il s’agit d’une quête de sens, mais aussi de reconnaissance, qui passe par l’épreuve personnelle et le fait d’y survivre.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, it is important to understand the sexual behaviours that place youth at risk of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies in order to develop and implement appropriate health-promoting interventions. Parents are in a unique position to help adolescents to have responsible attitudes and behaviour towards sex, and to educate adolescents into healthy sexual adults. The study aimed to investigate parent-adolescent communication and adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour, and the relationship between them. An exploratory, descriptive research design and a quantitative methodological approach were used. One biographical questionnaire, three measuring scales of parent-adolescent communication and one questionnaire about adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour were used as measuring instruments. Data from 95 female adolescents who were attending the family planning facilities of two clinics in the Metropole Region of the Western Cape were employed for the study. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlations, analyses of variance and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of sexual risk-taking behaviours among adolescents in the Western Cape. Family environment characteristics, especially the parents’ marital status, play a significant role in both parent-adolescent communication and sexual risk-taking behaviour. Unexpected findings were some significant correlations that were found between different factors of both general and sexual parent-adolescent communication. Spearman’s correlations and best subsets multiple regression analysis were performed on the data to ascertain which factors are significantly correlated or associated with adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour. In both statistical analyses, the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues was the most important. A significant negative correlation between adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviours and the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues illustrates the positive influence of amount of parent-adolescent sexual communication on adolescents’ sexual risk-taking behaviour.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Met die groeiende MIV/VIGS epidemie in Suid-Afrika is dit belangrik om te verstaan watter gedrag jong mense in gevaar stel om MIV of ander seksueel oordraagbare siektes op te doen of om ongewens swanger te word om daardeur programme wat hierdie gedrag verminder, te kan ontwikkel en implementeer. Ouers is in ‘n unieke posisie om te verseker dat hulle adolessente kinders verantwoordelike houdings en optrede teenoor seks ontwikkel en om hulle op te voed tot volwassenes wat ‘n gesonde houding tot seks het. Die doel van hierdie studie was om die verhouding tussen ouer-adolessente kommunikasie en die seksuele waaggedrag van jong mense te ondersoek en die verhouding tussen hulle te bepaal. ‘n Ondersoekende, beskrywende navorsingsontwerp en ‘n kwantitatiewe metodologiese benadering is gebruik. ‘n Biografiese vraelys, drie vraelyste oor ouer-adolessente kommunikasie en een vraelys oor die seksuele waaggedrag van jong mense is deur 95 adolessente meisies voltooi wat die gesinsbeplanningsfasiliteite by twee klinieke in die Wes-Kaapse metropool besoek het. Die data is ontleed deur die berekening van Spearman (Rho)-korrelasies, variansieontleding, meervoudige regressie-analise en beskrywende statistiek. Die bevindings dui op ‘n hoë voorkoms van seksuele waaggedrag onder adolessente in die Wes-Kaap. Gesinsomstandighede, veral die ouers se huwelikstatus, speel ‘n belangrike rol in ouer-adolessente kommunikasie en seksuele waaggedrag. Onvoorsiene bevindings was die beduidende korrelasies tussen verskillende faktore van beide algemene en seksuele ouer-adolessente kommunikasie. Spearman-korrelasies en best subsets meervoudige regressie-analise is op die data uitgevoer om te bepaal watter faktore betekenisvol met adolessente waaggedrag korreleer of daarmee geassosieer is. In beide statistiese analises is gevind dat die hoeveelheid ouer-adolessente kommunikasie oor seksuele kwessies die belangrikste was. Daar was ‘n statisties beduidende negatiewe korrelasie tussen die adolessent se seksuele waaggedrag en die hoeveelheid kommunikasie tussen die ouer en adolessent oor seks, wat beteken dat adolessente minder seksuele waaggedrag sal vertoon indien hulle ouers meer met hulle oor seksuele sake sal praat.

Abstract:
Aims and Rationale: Romantic relationships are recognised for playing a pivotal role for the emerging adolescent. These relationships are frequently reported to be detrimental to adolescent emotional and psychological well-being, though research focusing on adolescents’ romantic relationships in a clinical capacity is significantly restricted. This study endeavours to understand factors that affect youth in romantic relationships according to practitioners, and how these factors correspond to adolescents with no experience of therapy. These findings aim to broaden an understanding of the subject area, develop therapeutic practices and explore whether adolescents would benefit from counselling regarding their romantic relationships. Method: A mixed-method approach was used to carry out semi-structured interviews with 7 therapeutic practitioners to explore factors that affect adolescent romantic relationships. Themes extracted from a thematic analysis were used to develop an online q-sort survey with a non-clinical adolescent sample. Subjective viewpoints of 33 adolescents were quantitatively examined and triangulated with practitioners’ views. Results: The triangulated findings developed an understanding of factors that may affect adolescent adjustments to romantic relationships. Perspectives held by practitioners and those from adolescents, suggested key differences in developmental benefits, emotional and social adjustments and the role of adults. Similarities regarding the difficulties experienced by adolescent males were identified. Conclusion: Contributions of the findings go beyond whether counselling is appropriate or needed for adolescents in a romantic relationship. They add to an understanding of the discrepancies in the way romantic relationships are perceived by practitioners in affecting adolescents’ adjustments and development, as opposed to how young people actually experience these relationships.

Povrede adolescenata predstavljaju rastući javno zdravstveni problem. Iako fizička aktivnost ima dokazanu višestruku korist po zdravlje pojedinca, ona je povezana sa rizikom od povreda, posebno u zemljama sa nedovoljno razvijenim strategijama za prevenciju istih. Cilj istraživanja bio je da se utvrdi povezanost između intenzivne fizičke aktivnosti i povreda, da li nivo fizičke aktivnosti utiče na rizično i protektivno ponašanje adolescenata, i da se identifikuju okolnosti i okruženje u kom se povrede najčešće dešavaju. Za istraživanje je korišćena retrospektivno-prospektivna kohortna studija na odabranom uzorku adolescenata od 15-19 godina koji pohađaju srednju školu. Putem standardnog internacionalnog upitnika o fizičkoj aktivnosti IPAQ i dobijenog MET skora, izdvojen je deo kohorte adolescenata izložen intenzivnoj fizičkoj aktivnosti. Kontrolnu grupu činili su umereno fizički aktivni i neaktivni adolescenti. U periodu od 12 meseci registrovane su sve vrste povreda adolescenata putem upitnika o povredama. Povrede koje su zahtevale medicinski tretman registrovane su kroz zdravstvenu dokumentaciju školskog dispanzera, sportske ambulante doma zdravlja, hitne medicinske pomoći i urgentnog odeljenja opšte bolnice. Klasifikacija i analiza podataka o povredama izvršena je prema prirodi povreda (S00-T98) na osnovu Međunarodne klasifikacije bolesti (MKB-10, 1996.). Rizik za povrede bio je sedam puta veći u grupi intenzivno fizički aktivnih adolescenata u odnosu na kontrolnu grupu (RR: 7,041; 95%CI: 6,071; 8,187). Rizik za povrede koje su zahtevale medicinski tretman, prema rezultatima prikupljenim u zdravstvenim ustanovama, bio je 15 puta veći kod adolescenata koji se intenzivno bave fizičkom aktivnošću (RR: 14,717; 95%CI: 10,652; 20,592). Fizički aktivni učenici su se najviše povređivali na sportskim terenima, dok su se umereno aktivni i neaktivni najčešće povređivali u kućnom okruženju. Rizik da zadobiju sportske povrede bio je 11 puta veći kod fizički aktivnih ispitanika (RR: 11,212; 95%CI: 9,013; 14,074), sa značajno višom stopom incidencije kod muškaraca (82,9/100). Na treningu i utakmici povrede je zadobilo 85,2% fizički aktivnih adolescenata, dok su kod umereno aktivnih i neaktivnih sportske povrede najčešće registrovane u školskom okruženju (37,5%). Najviše povreda registrovano je u fudbalu (Inc. 4.44/1000 h), odbojci (Inc. 3.92/1000 h) i boksu/kik boksu (Inc. 3.75/1000 h). Intenzitet fizičke aktivnosti nije imao uticaja na smanjenje rizičnog ponašanja kod adolescenata, kao što je korišćenje alkohola, psihoaktivnih supstanci i nasilno ponašanje. Nivo protektivnog ponašanja bio je generalno nizak u obe grupe ispitanika. Korišćenje zaštitne kacige i zaštitne sportske opreme bilo je značajno zastupljenije u grupi intenzivno fizički aktivnih adolelescenata, ali nije utvrđen njihov uticaj na smanjenje rizika od povreda.
Injuries among adolescents represent growing public health issue. Although physical activity provides proven multiple benefits to the health of individuals, it is also associated with a risk of injuries, particularly in countries with less developed strategies for their prevention. The objective of the research was to determine the relation between vigorous physical activity and injuries, whether the level of physical activity affects the risk and protective behaviour among adolescents, and to identify the circumstances and environment in which the injuries most often occur. The research used a retrospective-prospective cohort study on a selected sample of adolescents aged 15-19 years attending secondary school. The part of the cohort of adolescents exposed to vigorous physical activity was separated through the standard international questionnaire on physical activity IPAQ and the resulting MET score. The control group consisted of moderately physically active and inactive adolescents. All types of injuries among adolescents within the 12 months were registered through a questionnaire. Injuries requiring medical treatment were registered through the health records of school and sports ambulances, emergency medical services and Emergency Department of the General Hospital. Classification and analysis of injury data was performed according to the nature of the injuries (S00 - T98) based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD - 10, 1996). The risk of injury was seven times higher in the group of vigorous physically active adolescents than in the control group (RR: 7,041; 95%CI: 6,071; 8,187). The risk of injuries that required medical treatment was 15 times higher among adolescents who are intensively engaged in physical activity (RR: 14,717; 95%CI: 10,652; 20,592). Physically active students are most frequently injured on the sports fields, while moderately active and inactive students are most frequently injured in the home environment. The risk to suffer sports injuries was 11 times higher among physically active participants (RR: 11,212; 95%CI: 9,013; 14,074) with a significantly higher incidence rate among men (82,9/100). On training and during the game 85,2% of physically active adolescents suffered from injuries, while among inactive participants sports injuries were most often registered in the school environment (37,5%). The most injuries were registered in soccer (Inc. 4.44/1000 h), volleyball (Inc. 3.92/1000 h) and boxing/kick boxing (Inc. 3.75/1000 h). The intensity of physical activity had no impact on reducing risk behaviour among adolescents, such as the use of alcohol, psychoactive substances and violent behavior. The level of protective behavior was generally low in both groups. The use of protective helmets and protective sports equipment was significantly more frequently present among vigorous physically active adolescents, but their influence on reducing the risk of injuries was not determined.

Abstract:
Previous research has found relatively high rates of depressive symptoms in immigrant Vietnamese adolescents. Two quantitative and one qualitative studies were conducted to examine pathways to depressive symptoms in a sample of 110 Vietnamese Australian adolescents. Study One examined the influence of family functionality, acculturative stress and ethnic identity on the participants' depressive symptoms and whether acculturative stress and ethnic identity contribute to additional variance beyond familial factors. Twenty percent of the sample reported clinical levels of depressive symptoms (compared to 12 % in the normative population). Family cohesion and parental psychological control were significantly associated with depressive symptoms; however, family conflict was not. After accounting for family variables, acculturative stress contributed an additional 10% of the variance in depressive symptoms. The qualitative data also indicated that many Vietnamese Australian adolescents reported having problems with their parents regarding cultural issues. The qualitative data also indicated that many participants reported experiencing discrimination, especially at their school. In a new sample of 106 Vietnamese Australian adolescents, Study Two examined two pathways to depressive symptoms to understand the precursors of family cohesion and acculturative stress respectively with broader contextual factors from the migration experience. Similar to Study One, 20% of participants in Study Two also reported clinical levels of depressive symptoms. The results of Study Two also confirmed two independent pathways to depression among Vietnamese Australian adolescents: (1) family interactions contributed to low levels of family cohesion which in turn contributed to Vietnamese Australian adolescent depression, and (2) perceived discrimination led to increased acculturative stress and to decreased school connectedness, which in turn affected adolescent depression. The result of the integrated pathway suggested that the interconnection between adolescents' home environment, the school and broader social context simultaneously influence their mental health. The findings of both studies indicate that Vietnamese Australian adolescents are at greater risk for depression. Clearly there is a need for an ecological approach for interventions to prevent depression in Vietnamese Australian adolescents.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar etnograficamente as vivências das tribos de adolescentes infratores que cumpriam medidas sócioeducativas na Cidade de São Carlos - SP, nos anos de 2006 e 2007, a partir de suas faces oficial e oficiosa, tendo como referencial teórico-metodológico a sócio-antropológia do cotidiano de Michel Maffesoli, que indica o fim do individualismo na sociedade pós-moderna, ao dar espaço ao tribalismo, à vivência grupal, em que uma pessoa só existe em relação com o outro. Vivemos num tempo de tribos, segundo as luzes e sombras que rodeiam a existência. Como modo de reconhecimento do dia a dia de algumas tribos de adolescentes, voltamos nossos olhares para o NAI – Núcleo de Atendimento Integrado - e para o Programa de Semiliberdade, ambos implantados segundo o que preconiza o ECA – Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente -, enquanto parte das Medidas Sócioeducativas em vigor na cidade de São Carlos, no período em que esse estudo foi realizado, voltando-se para tais instituições na medida em que, como diferencial da contemporaneidade, reconheciam o adolescente, autor de ato infracional, como pessoa portadora de direitos e deveres. Pesquisando a cultura dos adolescentes infratores, verifica-se as interfaces do ato infracional com o cotidiano, a cultura e o processo educativo. Tal pesquisa se justifica em vista da complexidade própria das novas demandas da educação e da necessidade de se dar voz aos adolescentes que vivem à margem do social, mas que, na multiplicidade de fenômenos que os rodeiam, perpassam pelos universos da angústia e do reencantamento pela vida, a partir de estratégias próprias que em suas ambigüidades envolvem tanto atos de violência social quanto de profunda solidariedade grupal.
The present study has as main purpose analyze ethnographically the experiences of offender adolescents’ tribes who were part of socio-educational programs in São Carlos – SP, during the years of 2006 and 2007. As theoretical methodological reference it was used the writer Michel Maffesoli who was chosen due to his social anthropological view that points out the end of the individualism on post modern society being substituted by the tribalism, the experience of living in group. Living in times of tribes our attention was focused on NAI (an integrated service program) and on Semi Liberty program, both implemented according to ECA – Statute of the Child and Adolescent – as part of educational programs realized in São Carlos during the period that this study was accomplished. Those institutions were chosen due to their singular way of treating the adolescents, recognizing them as citizens who have rights and obligations. By searching the culture of offender adolescents, it is possible to notice an interface with their daily life, culture and educational process. This research is significant considering new demands of education and the necessity of giving a special attention to those adolescents who are marginalized. It shows they can be now anguished and in the next moment enchanted by life and those unstable behaviors are reflected sometimes by social violence and sometimes by a sincere solidarity with their group.

This study offers a clinical and theoretical approach of teenage female mental anorexia by analogy with the religious behaviors of alimentary abstinence. The first part deals with the origin of fasting and signification of ascetic behavior by analyzing the myths in ancient Greece as well as in the old and New Testament. In anthropological logical, we prove the importance of alimentary matter in communities or any social organization. Here, we separate the ritual fasting from the absolute and subversive fasting in the mystic way. The second part is a psychoanalytic approach of anorexia using the following orientations: distinguish a concept of temptation from a concept of seduction, distinguish " jouissance" and pleasure, elaborate a "space of anorectical temptation" introducing a domination mother-daughter. The main assumption is that the anorexic person is under the power of an incestuous desire towards the mother as opposed to the incestuous desire towards the father. The third part is a clinical study; firstly of the lives of two great mystics, Catherine de Sienne and Marthe Robin, secondary of two patients we had in treatment

Identificar situações pertinentes a adolescência, tem-se mostrado de grande importância para auxiliar e compreender as reações dos adolescentes, seus anseios, suas mudanças bruscas de humor, sua ousadia e seus temores. Além disso, aspectos psicossociais e sociais são levados em consideração ao longo da pesquisa, ou seja, suas relações com família e amigos na tentativa de viver a moratória imposta pelo adulto até que alcance a sua adultez. A educação oferecida nas escolas deve proporcionar o pleno desenvolvimento do educando, bem como o exercício constante da cidadania e a preparação para o mundo do trabalho, conforme consta na LDB. A interação, a troca de experiências e a vivência com o grupo de colegas de classe, amigos e educadores permitem que os alunos se apropriem dos momentos em que a educação está acontecendo, alcançando assim, uma educação completa. Importante ressaltar o papel fundamental que o currículo e a avaliação desempenham na educação e, portanto em cada escola comprometida com a formação de adolescentes. O assunto intercâmbio é abordado a partir da pesquisa social feita com alunos que participaram de uma das edições dos programas e apresenta a análise e os resultados dos dados fornecidos pelos participantes da pesquisa. Ainda, com base nos resultados obtidos apresenta-se uma proposta de implantação de programas de intercâmbio nas escolas da Rede Sinodal de Educação.
The research More than a tour and study of a language: cultural exchange as a learning process is divided in three parts being the first one concerned with adolescence, the second with education and the third with the exchange program. Identifying situations in regard to adolescence has been very important to help understanding the reactions of adolescents, their longings and their impetuous changing in mood, their audacity and their fears. Moreover, psychosocial and social aspects are taken into consideration throughout the research, in other words, their relations with family and friends in the attempt to live the moratorium imposed by the adult until they reach their adult world. The education offered in the schools must provide the complete development of the student, as well as the exercise of citizenship and his preparation for the world of work, according to what is evident in LDB (Law of rules and basis). The interaction, the change of experience and the living together with the classmates, friends and teachers allow the students to assume the moments in which education is taking place, this way reaching a complete education. It is important to highlight the essential role that curriculum and evaluation play in education and, therefore in each school committed to the formation of adolescents. The subject exchange is approached from the social research carried out with the students that participated of one of the editions of the exchange and shows the analyses and results of the data provided by the participants. Besides, based on the results obtained, a proposal of implementation of exchange programs in the schools of Rede Sinodal de Educação is presented.

Abstract:
Although much research has examined the impact of life stress and the subsequent development of health symptoms, most of this research has been done with White middle class adults. Similar to the adult research, life stress research with children and adolescents has focused on White middle class individuals. The present study expands the knowledge about the stress process in ethnic/racial adolescents while controlling for the effects of SES. A sample population consisting of 103 Black students, 129 Hispanic students, and 105 White students was compared with respect to stressful events experienced, coping strategies, and social support. Students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds were included within each ethnic/racial group studied. After experimentally and statistically controlling for the effects of socioeconomic status, significant differences were observed. Black and Hispanic students reported receiving higher levels of Enacted Social Support (actual support) than White students. Contrary to what has been previous suggested, Black and Hispanic students reported having experienced fewer stressful life events than White students. Other ethnic/racial group differences that emerged included differences in ways in which specific patterns of moderator variables served to enhance the relationship between life stress and psychological symptomatology.

Abstract:

Background: Youth relocation is a common phenomenon, with most children and adolescents moving 2.6 times by age 18. While multiple studies have been conducted on the consequences of youth relocation, most have focused on already vulnerable populations, potentially leading to overestimation of the psychosocial effects of relocation on youth. Adolescents often experience negative psychosocial outcomes following residential relocation. Current theories have focused on how adolescent psychosocial functioning is impaired due to disruptions in social networks. Though this has been a focus of research, few studies have investigated potential protective social relationships within the family, or how relocation may impact intimate relationships into adulthood.

Methods: Secondary data sources were utilized to allow for large samples, and consisted of both yearly data, and longitudinal data. For the first paper, data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) involving 178,022 youth aged 12-17 was used, covering the years of 2005 to 2015. Participants were grouped into three categories: non-movers, single moves, and two or more moves reported within the last 12 months. Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate individual, family, and school-related factors, as well as behavioral correlates of relocation in the past 12 months. For papers two and three, the National Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) dataset was used. Those reporting relocating at least once prior to Wave I were designated as “movers”. Propensity score matching was conducted using a .25 caliper with 1:1 matching. Matched groups of movers and non-movers were assessed longitudinally in order to investigate how youth adapted into adulthood.

Results: For paper one, 22.9% of youth reported at least one household relocation within the past year. Movers were more likely to identify as racial minorities and report lower household income. Those reporting at least one household move were also significantly more likely to report a past-year depressive episode and increased interest in high-risk activities. They were also more likely to report decreased parental engagement and decreased academic engagement. Both substance use and delinquent or criminal behaviors were significantly increased with those reporting relocation, with each relocation predicting a 97.5% increased likelihood of a past year arrest or booking. Paper two showed that prior to matching, those reporting relocation prior to Wave I were significantly more likely to be non-White, receive household assistance, and were more likely to report engagement in substance use and delinquent activities at Wave I. Regression analysis showed that those youth with siblings were more likely to report improved adaptation at Wave II. Significant effects were found for those with siblings close in age, and for those with same-gendered siblings. Lastly, paper three suggested that youth who have experienced household relocation were significantly more likely to report younger ages of sexual debut, decreased contraceptive use, and an increased number of partners. Mobile youth were also more likely to report at least one marriage by Wave III.

Conclusions: Household relocation exposes adolescents to a bevy of psychosocial risks and predicts a steep increase in risky behaviors. While not typically identified as a high-risk group, additional attention needs to be paid to this population. They experience numerous risks, primarily in interpersonal relationships.

La recherche concerne la place et le rôle du féminin dans les recours à l'acte violent d'adolescentes délinquantes, avec pour corollaire plusieurs interrogations concernant le sens que revêtent ces agirs violents, en tant qu'expression d'un éventuel changement de la symptomatologie actuelle et particulière de l'adolescence. La question d'une spécificité de la violence au féminin, notamment lors du processus adolescent, processus mettant particulièrement à mal les notions de normal et de pathologique, sera posée, ainsi que celle du lien entre traumatisme, féminin, et recours à l'acte. La référence théorique est la psychopathologie psychanalytique, dans ses deux dimensions, intrapsychique et intersubjective, prenant en compte le nouage entre l'architecture psychique du sujet et sa rencontre avec le socius. AThe use of violent acts is studied mainly in male adolescents, while the suffering of girls is discussed in terms of hurting their own body, through singular psychopathological symptoms (eating disorders, attacks to the body, scarification ...). This research considers the place and role of being female in the use of violent acts by teenage offenders, with a corresponding number of questions about the meaning of these violent acts, as an expression of a possible change in the present symptomatology of adolescence. The question of specificity of violence from young girls, especially during the adolescent process, particularly the process undermining the concepts of normal and pathological will be asked, as well as the relationship between trauma, femininity, and use of violent acts. The theoretical reference is the psychoanalytic psychopathology in both aspects, intrapsychic and intersubjective, taking into account the tie between the psychic architecture of the subject and the meeting with socius. The methodology is based on a clinical approach, based on interviews and the placing of projective tests, with adolescents who have committed illegal violent acts. This research highlights the variety of psychic functioning in which meet the violent act, the balance of identifications in access to a calm femininity, tempering the impact of trauma and the importance of the sociocultural context in which these violent acts are deployed

In the first part, the present study had as a goal to tell the experiences and emotions I lived when I was an employee of Febem/SP. Having this institution as background to place the research. These experiences and emotions reveal the everyday life of the adolescents in conflict with the law in fullfilment of socioeducational measures. By telling all this, I tried to overcome the walls and gates of Febem, showing a world not well-known to outsiders. In the second part, the research was dedicated to the study of the everyday life of adolescent in conflict with the law in fullfilment of semi liberty socioeducational measure of internment. This discussion aimed at, by analyzing the adolescent s speech, understanding his experiences and emotions and investigating how the adolescent deals with the measure. This is a qualitative research and it was done in a Febem institution. Three adolescents took part of it. They aged from 16 to 17 and were in conflict with the law in fulfillment of socioeducational measure. The individual interview was the main instrument to collect data. The data analysis have showed that, in spite of the fact that the socioeducational measure allows the adolescents to go out and to visit the family on the weekends, the adolescents keep on living moments of anguish and stress due to the norms and imposed rules. Despite the difficulties, they say that the effective norms are necessary for their re-socialization; besides, they show, during interview, ambiguities and contradictions in relation to their future choices. The consumption culture emerges as the main reason of the juvenile delinquency. They perceive the rules of the measure as a penalty that restrict the freedom and the satisfaction of their desires, and the vulnerability is the source to make them break the law. For the interviewed adolescents the challenge is the future, which is linked to the satisfaction of desires of consumption. However, satisfying these desires is almost impossible for these adolescents due to their social economic status
O presente estudo teve como objetivo, num primeiro momento, narrar as experiências e as emoções vivenciadas por mim, enquanto funcionária da Febem/SP, tendo esta como pano de fundo para situar a pesquisa. Nele, apresento um relato do cotidiano e da convivência com os adolescentes em conflito com a lei, em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa de internação, transpondo muros, grades e portões, revelando as facetas de um mundo ainda pouco conhecido. Num segundo momento, o trabalho dedicou-se ao estudo sobre os adolescentes em conflito com a lei, em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa de semiliberdade, caracterizando a vida cotidiana dos adolescentes nela inseridos, buscando compreender e identificar as percepções e experiências vividas, investigando como é para eles conviverem com esta medida: ora liberto, ora sem liberdade. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, realizada em uma unidade da Febem, na qual participaram três adolescentes, com idade entre 16 e 17 anos, que estavam inseridos nesta medida. A entrevista individual foi o principal instrumento para a coleta de dados. As análises dos dados mostraram que, embora a medida possibilite saídas externas e convivência familiar nos fins de semanas, os adolescentes vivem momentos de angústia e stress, em função das normas e regras impostas. Apesar das dificuldades, eles adotam o discurso que as normas vigentes são necessárias para a sua ressocialização e deixam entrever ambigüidades e contradições quanto às suas escolhas futuras. O consumismo aparece como principal motivo para delinqüência. Os preceitos da medida são percebidos, por eles, como algo que impede a liberdade e a satisfação dos desejos, e a vulnerabilidade como impulso para seu ingresso no meio infracional. Para os jovens entrevistados, o desafio é o futuro, que, para eles, está vinculado à satisfação dos desejos de consumo, porém distante da realidade e das condições socioeconômicas

Background: Practicing physical activity (PA) has shown to present health benefits at all ages, namely in paediatrics. There are several methods to evaluate PA, however the most frequently used are the self-report questionnaires and accelerometry. The latter is an objective measuring tool, however it requires the use of relatively expensive devices. Questionnaires are easy and quick to apply, and therefore a useful tool to evaluate PA. Despite the existence of some questionnaires to evaluate PA in adolescents, there is still none validated against accelerometry for the Portuguese population. This validation is important, since questionnaires present an error associated to inaccuracies in recall activity. Aims: To validate the Physical Activity Index (PAI), by comparing it with accelerometry in adolescents according to gender and to explore if adolescents follow the physical activity recommendations established for their age. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, adolescents were recruited from 3 basketball teams, 2 classrooms from a school in Aveiro, and an orchestra band classroom. Socio-demographic, anthropometric data and spirometry were collected from the adolescents who participated in this study. Physical Activity (PA) was assessed with accelerometers (Actigraph model - GT3XPlus, Actigraph MTI, Manufacturing Technology Inc., Pensacola, FL, USA) worn during 7 days and the PAI. Pearson correlation coefficients (rs) were calculated to explore the correlations of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) (min.day-1) and steps per day vs. the PAI. To analyse participants’ ability to follow the recommendations of PA levels, 60 minutes of MVPA and 10,000 to 11,700 steps per day were considered. Chi-square (χ2) tests were used to explore differences between male and female’s ability to reach international recommendations of physical activity levels. Results: Forty nine adolescents (57.14% female; mean age 14.43 ±0.96 years old) participated in this study. Female and male presented similar PA levels measured with a subjective or an objective measure. Correlations between objective and subjective measures were significant and positive only for male (MVPA: r=.514, p=.017; Steps per day: r=.460, p=.041). Most participants were sedentary when analysing the objective data and considering the PA recommendations. Only 1 female (3.57%) and 3 males (14.29%) surpassed the 60 min.day-1 mark and, in terms of steps per day, only 13 females (46.43%) and 13 males (61.90%) registered over 10000 steps per day. Conclusion: When compared with accelerometry the PAI presented as a valid measuring tool only for male adolescents. Adolescents of both genders presented similar levels of PA with both measuring tools, and accelerometry results showed that the majority of adolescents were sedentary. Thus, it is necessary to investigate further in the future about the correlation between accelerometry and the PAI, as well as about the sedentary habits of adolescents.

Existem vários métodos para avaliar a AF, no entanto os mais utilizados são os questionários e a acelerometria. Esta última é uma medida objetiva que, no entanto, requer o uso de instrumentos relativamente dispendiosos. Já os questionários são instrumentos rápidos e fáceis de aplicar, sendo, assim úteis na avaliação da AF. Apesar de existirem alguns instrumentos para avaliar AF em adolescentes, ainda, não existe nenhum validado contra a acelerometria para a população portuguesa. Esta validação é necessária, uma vez que os questionários, por serem medidas subjetivas apresentam um erro associado a imprecisões na capacidade de relato de atividades passadas. Objetivos: Validar o Índice de Atividade Física (IAF) comparando-o com a acelerometria de acordo com o género e explorar se os adolescentes seguem as recomendações de AF estabelecidas para as suas idades. Métodos: Neste estudo transversal, os adolescentes foram recrutados de 3 equipas de basquetebol, 2 turmas de uma escola de Aveiro e 1 turma de uma banda de música de orquestra. Dados sociodemográficos, antropométricos e de espirometria foram recolhidos aos participantes. AF foi medida com acelerómetros (Actigraph modelo - GT3XPlus, Actigraph MTI, Manufacturing Technology Inc., Pensacola, FL, USA), usados durante 7 dias e com o IAF. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson (rs) foi calculado para explorar as correlações entre os minutos de AF moderada a vigorosa (AFMV) (min.dia-1) e os passos por dia vs. o IAF. Para analisar a capacidade dos participantes seguirem as recomendações dos níveis de AF, foram considerados 60 minutos.dia-1 de AFMV e os 10,000 a 11,700 passos por dia. Testes Quiquadrado (χ2) foram usados para explorar diferenças na capacidade de atingir os níveis de AF estabelecidos em orientações internacionais entre rapazes e raparigas. Resultados: Quarenta e nove adolescentes (57.14% raparigas; idade média 14.43 ±0.96 anos) participaram no estudo. Raparigas e rapazes apresentaram níveis de AF semelhantes, medidos com medidas subjetivas ou objetivas. As correlações entre as medidas subjetiva e objetiva foram significativas e positivas apenas para os rapazes (AFMV: r=.514, p=.017; Passos por dia: r=.460, p=.041). A maioria dos adolescentes mostraram-se sedentários na análise dos dados objetivos e das recomendações de AF. Apenas 1 rapariga (3.57%) e 3 rapazes (14.29%) ultrapassaram a marca dos 60 minutos.dia-1 de AFMV e em relação aos passos por dia, apenas 13 raparigas (46.43%) e 13 rapazes (61.90%) registaram valores acima dos 10,000 passos por dia. Conclusão: O IAF mostrou-se uma ferramenta válida na medição de AF em comparação com a acelerometria, apenas para os rapazes. Adolescentes de ambos os sexos apresentaram níveis de AF semelhantes, em ambos os instrumentos de medida, tendo-se a maioria revelado como sedentários através da análise dos resultados obtidos pela acelerometria Desta forma, é necessário investigar-se mais, no futuro, sobre a correlação entre a acelerometria e o IAF, bem como sobre os hábitos sedentários dos adolescentes.

Resumo: O fator mais importante para o desenvolvimento de lesões de cárie é a atividade metabólica do biofilme sobre os tecidos dentais. A partir desta definição e do desenvolvimento de novos materiais restauradores, uma abordagem mais conservadora sobre o tratamento de lesões de cárie em dentina vem sendo pesquisada. Capítulo 1 - Objetivo: Comparar os resultados do acompanhamento clínico e radiográfico após 24 meses, de molares permanentes com lesões de cárie em dentina, com extensão igual ou maior que o terço médio, após a remoção total ou parcial de dentina cariada. Metodologia: 18 molares permanentes foram estudados de 11 adolescentes com idade entre 12 a 17 anos. Os dentes foram randomizados em dois grupos com 9 voluntários em cada um deles. No grupo experimental foi realizada a remoção parcial de dentina cariada e o forramento da cavidade com cimento de ionômero de vidro, e no grupo controle foi realizada a remoção total de dentina cariada e forramento com hidróxido de cálcio e ionômero de vidro. Ambos os tratamentos foram realizados em uma única sessão e o material restaurador utilizado foi a resina composta fotopolimerizável. Os dentes foram avaliados por meio de testes de vitalidade pulpar e exame radiográfico durante dois anos. Resultados: Nenhum dente estudado apresentou imagem radiográfica sugerindo lesão periapical em ambos os grupos, e nenhum voluntário sentiu dor sem estímulo durante o tempo de acompanhamento. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a manutenção de dentina infectada sob restaurações pode ser indicada em dentes permanentes de adolescentes e o tratamento pode ser realizado em uma única sessão sem a necessidade de reabertura do dente. Capítulo 2 - Objetivo: comparar o perfil microbiano de lesões de cárie em dentina não detectadas clinicamente (NCD) e de lesões detectadas clinicamente (CD), por meio da técnica de Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase baseada na Eletroforese em Gel com Gradiente Desnaturante (PCR-DGGE). Metodologia: 8 amostras de dentina cariada não detectadas clinicamente (NCD) e 8 detectadas clinicamente (CD), coletadas previamente ao procedimento restaurador (Capítulo 1), foram analisadas pela técnica de PCR-DGGE. Lesões em dentina sob esmalte íntegro foram consideradas lesões não detectadas clinicamente. Foi realizada a extração de DNA e em seguida a PCR com um conjunto de primers universais do 16S rRNA. Os fragmentos do 16S rDNA amplificados pela PCR foram separados pelo gel de DGGE. Os perfis microbianos foram comparados utilizando os programas Bionumerics e Primer5. Resultados: A heterogeneidade dos perfis demonstrou a nítida separação entre os grupos com baixa de similaridade entre eles (45% R>0,5). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre a média do número de amplicons (bandas) das lesões NCD e CD (p=0,40). Conclusão: Os resultados sugerem que existem espécies bacterianas claramente diferenciadas entre lesões NCD e CD, porém com algumas sobreposições entre elas, e lesões de cárie CD possuem uma microbiota tão complexa quanto as lesões NCD.
Abstract: The most important factor to development of caries lesion is the metabolic activity of biofilm on the dental tissues. By this definition and of the development of new restorative materials, a more conservative approach about dentin caries lesion treatment has been researched. Chapter 1. Objective: To compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of permanent molar teeth, with deep lesions treated by complete or partial removal of carious dentin after follow-up over a 24-month period. Methodology: 18 permanent molars of 11 adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years, were assigned to interventions by using random allocation. In the experimental group nine teeth were submitted to partial removal of carious dentin, protected with glass ionomer cement and restored with resin composite. In the control group, nine teeth were submitted to complete removal of carious dentin, protected with calcium hydroxide and glass ionomer cement and restored with resin composite. Radiographic examination and pulp vitality tests were performed 12-24 months after cavity sealing and the teeth were not re-entered. Results: No volunteer felt pain without stimulus and no teeth presented an image suggesting periapical lesion. Conclusion: The results suggest that partial removal of carious dentin can be indicated to maintain the pulp vitality and that there is no need to reopen after cavity sealing. Chapter 2. Objective: To compare the microbial profile of non-clinically (NCD) and clinically detected dentin-related caries lesions (CD) by Polymerase Chain Reaction based-Denaturing Gradient Gel Eletrophoresis. Methodology: 8 dentin caries sample of non-clinically detected lesions (NCD) and 8 clinically detected (CD), previously collected to operative procedure (Chapter 1), were assessed by PCRDGGE. Dentin caries lesions underlying sound enamel were considered nonclinically detected lesions. The total microbial genomic DNA of the sample was isolated. PCR was performed with a set of universal bacterial 16S rDNA primers. The PCR-amplified 16S rDNA fragments were separated by DGGE. The groups were assessed by comparing the PCR-DGGE fingerprinting profile using Bionumerics and Primer5 programs. Results: The profile heterogeneity demonstrated the evident separation of the groups with low similarity between them (45% R>0,5). There was no statistical difference between the means of amplicons (bands) of the NCD and CD lesions (p=0,40). Conclusion: These findings suggest that there are clearly differentiated species between the groups; however, with some overlap between them, and that CD lesions had a microbiota as complex as those of NCD lesions.

Abstract:
Cette recherche qualitative de type exploratoire s’intéresse à la scolarisation des jeunes atteints de maladie grave ou chronique. Les recherches québécoises à ce sujet sont actuellement insuffisantes pour couvrir la complexité de ce champ de recherche, ce qui contribue au caractère novateur de notre travail. De nombreux écrits, en majorité de provenance américaine, font état des difficultés nombreuses et variées que peuvent vivre les jeunes atteints d’une maladie grave ou chronique dans leur cheminement scolaire. Nous avons choisi d’investiguer du côté de la motivation scolaire pour éclairer une partie de leur vécu, considérant que la motivation est un élément décisif dans la réussite scolaire, cette dernière étant au cœur des préoccupations des intervenants scolaires. La question sous-tendant cette recherche s’intéresse aux facteurs qui modulent la motivation scolaire des jeunes atteints de maladie grave ou chronique. Les objectifs qui en découlent sont ainsi d’identifier et décrire les sources motivationnelles des jeunes malades et identifier et décrire les difficultés en lien avec la motivation. La clientèle ciblée pour cette étude se limite aux adolescents et adolescentes. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, des entrevues semi-dirigées ont été menées avec cette clientèle en vue de faire une analyse thématique descriptive. Les principaux résultats obtenus ont révélé que le modèle de la dynamique motivationnelle de Viau (2007) est un modèle pertinent pour décrire la motivation scolaire de ces jeunes, mais qu’il se doit d’être plus détaillé au niveau du contexte. Nous avons ainsi bonifié ce modèle par l’ajout des sources motivationnelles et des difficultés énoncées par nos participants. Notre recherche met en exergue que la clientèle malade chroniquement est méconnue au Québec, aussi bien par le manque d’écrits scientifiques ou de documentations ministérielles pertinents et spécifiques à la réalité québécoise que par les propos que nous avons relevés du discours des participants. En ce sens, la rédaction d’un mémoire à cet effet est en soi une retombée positive. La description de leur motivation scolaire donne également des pistes intéressantes pour les intervenants du milieu scolaire.

Abstract:
It is well known that adolescence is a difficult stage of development, involving various aspects of development, namely biological, cognitive, social and emotional development. More recent research indicates that the turbulence and stress in adolescence are exaggerated to a great extent (Berk, 2006); yet the youth of today seem increasingly unhappy. Eating disorders, depression and suicide are some of the problems that occur more frequently in adolescence than before adolescence (Barlow & Durand, 2005). Adolescence may also involve that youth become reluctant to spend time with their parents and that they become more likely to engage in arguments with their parents. Research indicates that both parents and adolescents report that they feel less close to each other during this time (Steinberg & Morris, 2001). The purpose of this study was to investigate what adolescents' experiences were of their relationship with their parents, what influence the parent-adolescent relationship (as perceived by the adolescent) has on adolescent emotional-well-being, as well as to determine whether or not adolescents' emotional well-being can be predicted by the parent-adolescent relationship. A quantitative cross-sectional survey research design was used for the purpose of this study. The selected sample included grade 9 to l I learners at various secondary schools who fitted the selection criteria (N = 257). Data collection took place by means of various validated questionnaires to measure the parent-adolescent relationship: The Family Satisfaction Scale (Olson & Wilson, 1982), The Parent- adolescent Communication Scale (Barnes & Olson, 1982), The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) of Armsden and Greenberg (1987). To measure adolescent emotional well-being, The Emotional Intelligence Scale (E LS) of Schutte et al. ( 1998), The Fortitude Questionnaire (FORQ) of Pretorius ( 1997), The Affectometer (AFM) of Kammann and Flett ( l 983), The General Hea lth Questionnaire (GHQ) of Goldberg and Hillier ( 1979) and a biographical questionnaire were used to gather demographic information. There were a total of 152 questions, and it took 30-45 minutes to complete. Data analysis was done by means of descriptive stati stics, reliabi lity and validity indices, correlation indices and t-tests; and Cohen's practical effect size was used to investigate significant differences. The results of the study indicate that the majority of adolescents in the research group rate their relationship with their parents positively, although significant differences were found between genders with regard to family satisfaction and between cultures with regard to parent-adolescent communication. The results also seem to indicate that higher manifestations of aspects of emotional well-being are experienced by the African youth than the white participants; and that a healthy parent-adolescent relationship can have a positive influence on adolescent emotional well-being. The parent-adolescent relationship served as a predictor of adolescent emotional well-being, while attachment anger and family cohesion were found to be the strongest predictors of this.

Abstract:
Currently, no career theories exist that sufficiently explain the career development of South Africa’s diverse population groups. Consequently, South African researchers have been entirely dependent on international, western-informed career theories. While such theories have taken on a more ethnocentric complexion in recent times, they remain essentially decontextualised for South Africa. Furthermore, although the influence of family and the significant roles of parents have been theoretically acknowledged as critical influences in adolescent career development, there is still a considerable lack of research in South Africa on this topic. The present study therefore explored the perceptions of systemic influences on adolescent career development from the perspectives of both Black middle-class South African Grade 11 learners and their parents. The research was conceptualised within the Systems Theory Framework (STF) of career development and used its derivative instrument, the My Systems of Career Influences (MSCI, Adolescent). The present study utilised a qualitative research method, using answers derived from the MSCI (Adolescent) booklets to inform semi-structured interviews. The data analysis procedure involved the use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis to qualitatively analyse data obtained from the semistructured interviews. Findings revealed a number of influences within the individual system (personality, values, abilities), social system (adolescents’ parents and teachers) and societal-environmental system (financial support, the opportunity to work overseas, geographical location, job availability, and the location of universities) that were acknowledged as having an influence on the career development of South African Black middle class adolescents. Each of these findings were explored and unpacked under the four xii identified Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) superordinate themes of Family Dynamics, Great Expectations, The Ghost of Apartheid and Coconuts Fall Far From the Tree. Lastly, the limitations of the present study, as well as recommendations for future research are discussed.
