Abstract:
This chapter examines, from a multidisciplinary perspective, plausible hypotheses for implementation of border carbon adjustment mechanisms, seen as a complement to strong environmental regulation. It highlights economic, legal, and political difficulties raised by border carbon adjustments. After thoroughly reviewing their economic practicability, it analyses these mechanisms from an International Trade Law perspective, particularly vis-à-vis the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, sustainable development, and the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities. It concludes with an assessment of policy-related implications of such mechanisms and outlines, in particular, how border carbon adjustments may be used as an engine of economic and energy transition, for developed and developing countries equally.

Abstract:
Adjustment disorder has been included in the psychiatric classifications for half a century, but despite its age, this is the first book devoted exclusively to the condition. The starting point is to delineate its origins and how it differs from normal distress. The philosophical and clinical dilemmas raised by this diagnosis are considered in the early chapters of this book. The development of new screening and diagnostic tools will assist in epidemiological studies. The radical proposal to have specific criteria for AD in ICD-11 is reviewed critically as this would lead to significant differences between DSM-5 and ICD-11. Psychobiology, treatment, and prognosis are discussed in the middle sections of this work, and specialists in a number of areas—including child and adolescent psychiatry, learning disability, occupational health, and forensic psychiatry—have made invaluable contributions. This book will fill the vacuum for doctors and other mental health professionals working with those who have AD. The generous use of case vignettes invigorates the theory behind the practice.

Abstract:
Adjustment disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that has undergone numerous iterations within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and is characterized by an immediate or almost immediate maladaptive or pathologic psychological response to a stressor. When the stressor is removed, there is the expectation that the patient returns to his or her previous level of functioning. This chapter provides an overview of its historical development, diagnostic criteria, potential controversies, epidemiology, neurobiology, comorbidities, and other differential diagnostic and treatment considerations such as ruling out depression and using assessment instruments. The chapter closes with the presentation of a case illustrating application of the criteria and clinical characteristics of adjustment disorder. The views expressed in this chapter are those of the authors and do not reflect the official policy of the Department of Army/Navy/Force, Department of Defense, or U.S. Government. The identification of specific products or scientific instrumentation is considered an integral part of the scientific endeavor and does not constitute endorsement or implied endorsement on the part of the author, DoD, or any component agency.

Abstract:
Becoming incarcerated and the challenges associated with incarceration are for most people major life stressors. The development of acute adjustment disorders is very common in these settings. This chapter attempts to give guidance to clinicians who are on the front line in very difficult circumstances. They are often dealing with patients who are overwhelmed with significant adverse life events, whose history reveals that they have dealt with emotional disturbances by acting out, or have struggled with substance abuse for many years. The risk of suicide is a substantial concern, and may be substantially elevated in the presence of an adjustment disorder. Patients present with complex comorbidities, often complicated by substance use disorder and withdrawal. Clinicians often have very little information at their disposal, yet will have to make difficult decisions under pressure. For example, it is often not possible to collect collateral information or previous clinical records. Clinicians are required to balance an empathic approach while maintaining clear boundaries. In addition, the clinician is also required to bear in mind the security constraints of the institution. Often the clinician is working in relative isolation, without the added resources of a multidisciplinary team. In our view, treatment of adjustment disorders in correctional settings requires a keen application of the whole complement of clinical skills. This chapter discusses the presentation, assessment issues, and management concerns of adjustment disorders in jails and prisons.
