Abstract:
ABSTRACTTheory and research pertaining to relationships between oral and written communication offer support to seemingly contrary hypotheses regarding the development of informational adequacy in speech and in writing. Because the social cognitive demands of face-to-face interaction are less complex than those of prototypical written communication, younger children might be expected to display greater audience adaptation in speech. On the other hand, the process of encoding in writing facilitates certain cognitive operations, and, therefore, children might be expected to communicate more effectively in writing. Empirical studies warranting conflicting conclusions, however, have administered tasks that tap different communication functions, either explanatory or referential. The present study replicates and extends this previous research by administering referential and explanatory communication tasks in both speech and writing to children at three grade levels. In addition, an independent measure of social cognitive ability was administered. Results confirmed increasing differentiation with age between speech and writing, with fifth graders displaying greater informational adequacy in writing. Children's performance in written communication, rather than speech, revealed a dependency on social cognitive ability. Differences between referential and explanatory communication suggested by previous research were confirmed.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis study investigated the ability of high-functioning verbal adolescents with autism or Down's syndrome to perform a referential communication task. It was predicted that autistic subjects would require more specific prompting to convey needed information to a listener than would subjects with Down's syndrome of the same verbal level. Subjects, 13 with autism and 14 with Down's syndrome, matched on verbal mental age, learned a simple board game, and were asked to teach it to a listener who used varying levels of prompting to elicit target information. Most subjects in the autistic group required specific prompting to produce the target information, whereas most subjects with Down's syndrome did not. Response adequacy was significantly higher in the Down's syndrome group than in the autistic group at the most general prompt level. Subjects with Down's syndrome used more gesture at the most general prompt level and when producing high adequacy responses, whereas subjects with autism used more gesture when producing low adequacy responses.

Abstract:
With the advent of the collaboration tools based on ICT (Information and Communication Technology), the distances between the team members of a company spread around the world have shrunk, at least virtually. Using the most complete collaboration/communication technologies for project meetings, although beneficial at first glance, is not always the best choice when one considers the diverse cultural aspects of the team members of different nationalities. This article examines the adequacy of the communication tools for project communication in line with the cultural differences by comparing the views of American and Brazilian groups used to communicating through ICT on a daily basis for project related work. The results show significant differences between the perceptions and attitudes of the two groups regarding the adequacy of the communication tools in addressing usual project tasks.

Abstract:
A third-grade classroom participated in a communication skills unit (CSU) that was designed and implemented collaboratively by a teacher, speech-language pathologist, and student speech-language pathologist. The CSU was developed to increase the students' metapragmatic awareness of explanation adequacy. To assess the efficacy of the CSU, two third-grade classrooms were compared. One participated in the CSU, and the other did not. A pre- and post-test were administered to students in both classrooms, requiring them to view a videotape of two children helping each other with math problems, rate the explanations viewed on tape, and justify their ratings. The students' justifications were then coded on three levels by the researcher. Results indicated that only the students who participated in the CSU showed significant improvement in their ability to rate and justify the adequacy of an explanation. The teacher who participated in the CSU observed marked improvement in her students' abilities to ask questions and respond to requests for information solicited by peers.

Abstract:
This study explores how the dialogue—or lack thereof—between employees’ opinions and organization-wide communications relates to employees’ identification with the organization. Using survey data from a sample of 111 IT workers, we performed cross-level tests to explore how employee voice, the perceived adequacy of organization-wide downward communication, and job satisfaction related to employees’ organizational identification. The results of the hierarchical regression and mediation analyses revealed that higher levels of employee voice were associated with higher levels of organizational identification and fully mediated by job satisfaction. Similarly, higher levels of organization-wide communication adequacy were associated with higher levels of organizational identification and partially mediated by job satisfaction. The findings suggest that inclusive and participative organizational communication practices are most likely to foster organizational identification when they are viewed favorably by employees and positively impact their job experiences.

Abstract:
Abstract The main objective of the paper is to provide a conceptual apparatus of a general logical theory of language communication. The aim of the paper is to outline a formal-logical theory of language in which the concepts of the phenomenon of language communication and language communication in general are defined and some conditions for their adequacy are formulated. The theory explicates the key notions of contemporary syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The theory is formalized on two levels: token-level and type-level. As such, it takes into account the dual – token and type – ontological character of linguistic entities. The basic notions of the theory: language communication, meaning and interpretation are introduced on the second, type-level of formalization, and their required prior formalization of some of the notions introduced on the first, token-level; among others, the notion of an act of communication. Owing to the theory, it is possible to address the problems of adequacy of both empirical acts of communication and of language communication in general. All the conditions of adequacy of communication discussed in the presented paper, are valid for one-way communication (sender-recipient); nevertheless, they can also apply to the reverse direction of language communication (recipient-sender). Therefore, they concern the problem of two-way understanding in language communication.

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the impact of communication adequacy on resistance to change at selected dealership companies in the Durban Metropolitan Region. Recent studies suggest that there could be various other factors that influence resistance including leadership skills, demographic factors and theoretical components of resistance to change. The study uses the non-random purposive sampling collected from 270 staff at selected dealership companies in the Durban Metropolitan Region using questionnaires administered to employees. The structural equation model was also applied in analyzing the data. The findings of the study show that there is a significant relationship between communication adequacy based on structure and channel efficiency in relation to resistance communication based on channel efficiency positively influencing resistance to change. The study further provides practical implications for the employees at the selected dealership companies to consider more strategic and appropriate communication tools.

Abstract:
There is limited research on interdisciplinary communication between lactation consultants (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant [IBCLC]) and other healthcare professionals. An online survey assessed how healthcare professionals (physicians, surgeons, and alternative practitioners) perceive lactation consultants and what language, forms of communication, and practices are helpful. Participants (N = 75) indicated mostly positive experiences. Negative experiences included lack of communication or dissatisfaction with experience or outcome. Breastfeeding terms were, on average, “somewhat clear,” and several were correlated with perceived adequacy of breastfeeding knowledge. Participants indicated that communications from lactation consultants should include a plan for follow-up, an outline of the safety and rationale for use of potentially unfamiliar treatments, and contact information. The preferred form of communication varied. Improving interdisciplinary communication and collaboration will likely result in better support for breastfeeding dyads.

Abstract:
Background: Minimal research focuses on interactions between providers and new ostomy patients. Studies show that provider communication is important for patient health outcomes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate ostomy patients’ perceptions of provider communication following surgery and whether interactions adequately prepare ostomy patients to care for their new appliance. Method: Using a nonprobability national sample of 381 ostomy patients, we conducted a retrospective quantitative study. We measured adequacy of provider communication from self-reports from ostomy patients. Results: The results show that almost half of the sample (49%) reported receiving inadequate communication from providers. We also found a relationship between ostomy patients’ educational level and their perceptions of receiving adequate communication. Notably, patients with lower educational attainment reported receiving adequate communication up to 4 times more than patients with higher educational attainment. Conclusion: Our results suggest that not only do ostomy patients need better communication from providers following their surgery but also patients with higher educational attainment appear to expect more information from providers than patients with lower educational attainment.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo describe the rehabilitation services available for communication disorders in Sri Lanka and to estimate the adequacy of the services in provinces and districts of the country.SettingThe study considered government and private institutions, which provide rehabilitation services for communication disorders in Sri Lanka.ParticipantsInstitutions providing services of speech–language pathologists, audiologists and audiology technicians in Sri Lanka.Primary and secondary outcome measuresWe investigated the number of government hospitals and private institutions, which provide speech–language pathology and audiology services in Sri Lanka as the primary outcome measure. A number of speech–language pathologists, audiologists and audiology technicians working in the institutions were obtained from records and institution-based inquiries to identify the adequacy of the services in the country as the secondary outcome measure.ResultsOf the 647 government hospitals that provide free healthcare services in the country, 45 and 33 hospitals had speech and language therapy and audiology units, respectively. Government hospitals do not have audiologists but only have audiology technicians. The number of speech and language therapists and audiology technicians in the government sector per 100 000 population in the country was 0.44 and 0.18, respectively. There were wide variations in specialist to population ratio between districts. 77 private centres provide speech therapy services in 15 out of the 25 districts; 36 private centres provide audiological evaluations in 9 districts.ConclusionsThe number of specialist speech and language therapists and audiologists is not sufficient to provide adequate rehabilitation services for communications disorder for the Sri Lankan population. Not recruiting audiologists to the government sector affects the management of hearing impairment in the affected.

Abstract:
Traditional approaches fail to grasp the essential drivers and turns of interlingual communication in a wide context of current technological, marketing and economic processes. New scenarios of cross- and interlanguage information distribution, prevalence of functionality, timeliness, relevance, predictability, relevance and marketing function of selling texts over standards of quality, do not comply with any types of equivalence and adequacy. The concept of ‘locale’ is used in a variety of research, including Translation and Localization Studies, Marketing, Sociology, Political Science, etc., and allows to identify new variables, qualities and functions of interlanguage communication, embedded into technologically and economically driven processes of content and products distribution. Such parameters of locales as purchasing power, size, stronger or weaker communicative potential of languages, etc., account for asymmetries in interlingual communication and provide for the conceptualization of new patterns of content production and consumption across languages.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that classical concept theories and hybrids thereof are empirically inadequate for the terminological analysis and description of concepts in a number of sciences. Examples of the classification and definition of minerals in the field of mineralogy are used to illustrate that the defining features of mineral species are typically the attributes of prototype categories; i.e., they are, amongst others, culturally, perceptually, and bodily based, idealized and essentially interactional and functional in nature. Furthermore, it is argued that classification in mineralogy is founded on an experientialist rather than an objectivist epistemology. These factors strengthen the argument for a prototype approach to concept analysis not only in the humanities and the social sciences but also in the so-called natural and pure sciences.

Abstract:
Risk management is a highly important issue for Fintech companies; moreover, it is very specific and puts forward the serious requirements toward the top management of any financial institution. This study was devoted to specifying the risk factors affecting the finance and capital adequacy of financial institutions. The authors considered the different types of risks in combination, whereas other scholars usually analyze risks in isolation; however, the authors believe that it is necessary to consider their mutual impact. The risks were estimated using the PLS-SEM method in Smart PLS-4 software. The quality of the obtained model is very high according to all indicators. Five hypotheses related to finance and five hypotheses related to capital adequacy were considered. The impact of AML, cyber, and governance risks on capital adequacy was confirmed; the effect of governance and operational risks on finance was also confirmed. Other risks have no impact on finance and capital adequacy. It is interesting that risks associated with staff have no impact on finance and capital adequacy. The findings of this study can be easily applied by any financial institution for risk analysis. Moreover, this study can serve toward a better collaboration of scholars investigating the Fintech activities and practitioners working in this sphere. The authors present a novel approach for enhancing key performance indicators (KPIs) for Fintech companies, proposing utilizing metrics that are derived from the company’s specific risks, thereby introducing an innovative method for selecting KPIs based on the inherent risks associated with the Fintech’s business model. This model aligns the KPIs with the unique risk profile of the company, fostering a fresh perspective on performance measurement within the Fintech industry.

Abstract:
Purpose – The paper uses social cognitive theory to explore reactions to performance evaluation processes as situated cognitions by examining the relationship between key elements of employees’ schemas about an organizational environment, preparation for evaluation, and these reactions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Survey of 260 employees of eight organizations in a Midwestern US city. Findings – Job resource adequacy, communication adequacy, coworker relationships, and preparation time are significantly and positively associated with employee reactions to performance evaluation processes. Preparation time moderates the association between organizational context and employee reactions. Research limitations/implications – A social cognitive perspective on performance evaluation broadens the scope of extant research. This study is limited by cross-sectional design but opens the door to future experimental and longitudinal research. Practical implications – Performance evaluation processes are situated in an organizational context. Organizational interventions to improve perceptions of this key process could focus on better communication and encouraging preparation, especially if job resources are less adequate. Originality/value – This research contributes to the performance evaluation literature by applying social cognitive theory to performance evaluation reactions as situated cognitions, calling attention to the broader organizational context in which these processes occur.

Abstract:
Abstract On the face of it, it appears that the explicitation of contextual knowledge is consistent with Toury’s (1995) norm of acceptability rather than his norm of adequacy. This is because this type of explicitation, which seeks to bridge the gap in readers’ contextual knowledge, enhances readability and is directed towards the target audience. However, in this article I argue that the use of this type of explicitation actually demonstrates an awareness of the importance of adhering to the source text, and may thus be aligned with adequacy norms. To support the argument, I show that this type of explicitation seems to be more prevalent than ever before, using as an example a recent translation of a story by O. Henry into Hebrew, in the context of Hebrew translated literature generally moving towards the norm of adequacy (Zoran 1990; Weissbrod 1992; Ben-Shahar 1994). This highlights the complexity of the relation between increased explicitness and the notions of adequacy and acceptability.

Abstract:
Globally, information and communication systems (ICS) are presently impacting every aspect of human activities, given its silent roles in business, learning, entertainment, construction, etc. The technologies have been widely accepted by housing construction industry stakeholders as an impetus for the delivery of adequate housing both in rural and urban neighbourhoods. Though there abound shreds of evidence that ICS play significant roles in the development of all sectors, it remains unidentified how the housing sector in Nigeria is exploiting ICS in its housing delivery processes. This study investigates the roles ICS play in the delivery of adequate housing. It also examines the influence of ICS on adequate housing delivery. The study employs a quantitative research approach using Delphi and survey questionnaire approaches to address the research objectives. A Delphi study was used to determine the influence of the identified elements on the overall adequacy of housing delivery, and the retrieved data were analysed using frequency tables and weighted mean scores. The study reveals that housing construction workers (HCWs) in the study area lack adequate knowledge of the systems; hence, the study recommends that adequate training on ICS usage should be given to HCWs for greater efficiency.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to general theoretical issues of communication in the perception of architecture. When adopting the axiomatic position about the adequacy of the perception of architecture “on the spot”, i.e. with direct physical and visual contact of the subject of perception with the architectural object, the authors raise the question of the translation of this perception to another subject who does not have the possibility of direct perception by deconstructing the resulting image, forming on this basis a model as an object of translation. The perceiving subject, i.e. “subject two”, in turn, deciphers the model and, based on it, forms a new image by extrapolation, homogeneous to the primary impression in the case of successful translation. The article describes the nuances and complexities of such a process.

Abstract:
This paper presents a corpus-based study about differences in micro-function combination patterns in German and Spanish warranties for household appliances. Firstly the micro-functional text analysis approach is described. This methodology makes feasible an empirically motivated stylistic description of specialised texts. The first large-scale micro-functional text-type analysis was carried out in the stylistic description of German and Spanish employment contracts. The second part of the paper analyses the micro-functional composition of German and Spanish warranties and some text specific combination patterns as well as their language specific differences. It will be shown that in contrast to German warranties, in Spanish warranties obligations tend to be expressed as dependent clauses which are subordinate to independent clauses that reaffirm the validity of the warranty. Moreover it becomes clear that most of these obligations are formulated in an indirect way. Finally possible reasons for the findings are explained by means of the politeness theory and language typology with the results claiming that Spanish texts are more prone to avoid face-threatening acts than German ones and that they are also more explicit in expression. The paper ends with the implications these findings hold for the linguistic adequacy of translations.

Abstract:
Although linguists like to claim that all human languages are equal in a general sense, differing from systems of animal communication in possessing ‘design features’ like arbitrariness and productivity (Hockett, 1958), they sometimes join non-linguists in expressing the view that some languages are inadequate with respect to the cognitive or expressive resources which they offer their speakers. In the Middle Ages, this charge was commonly levelled against the European vernaculars, and it was sometime before Spanish and Italian were recognized as having autonomous grammatical and lexical resources comparable in regularity and power to classical Greek and Latin (Scaglione, 1984). By the middle of the twentieth century, following on the descriptive work of Boas, Sapir and others, the notion that the languages of ‘primitive’ peoples were fundamentally inadequate had also been eroded, at least in linguistics, anthropology, and other academic circles (Kay & Kempton, 1984:65). Yet, as Hall (1966:106) notes, there is still one group of languages which constitutes the ‘last refuge’ of the concept of inadequate grammatical or lexical resources: pidgins and creoles.

Abstract:
Several standards for pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] grades and the relationship between selected quality attributes and prices indicated the complexity of communicating about quality attributes. Clear communication about quality attributes preferred by end users within the pecan industry and horticulturists facilitates the improvement of cultivars and strengthens the competitive position of the industry. A survey of Georgia pecan growers provided information about knowledge and perceived adequacy of pecan quality standards. Logit models were used to identify variables influencing knowledge of pecan grades and their perceived adequacy. Estimation results suggest that larger and more experienced growers were more familiar with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture standards for grades than small and new growers. The geographical location of a grower did not significantly affect the results. Knowledge of quality attributes demanded by the market requires familiarity with standards for grades and with industry practices to develop improved pecan cultivars.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe ability to convey the optimal amount of information during conversation is a fundamental aspect of language use. In this study the relationship between children's failures to produce unambiguous utterances and the mental effort demands of the communication task was investigated. Five-, six-, seven- and nine-year-old children performed a message production task and a finger-tapping task both separately and simultaneously. The decrease in finger-tapping frequency during the simultaneous performance was used as an estimate of effort demands of the message production task. Working memory capacity was assessed by means of a spatial memory test and an object features identification task. Children's intuitions about message adequacy were recorded in two message evaluation tasks. By age six children proved to be able to select the relevant information when they were explicitly asked to do so, indicating that effort demands of the communication task did not exceed their computational resources. However, results suggested that the relative effort requirements of the communication task decrease with increasing age. These findings support a performance theory of communication development in which effort demands are a determinant of children's message adequacy.

This research analyzes the sociolinguistics adequacy in advertisements. The analysis aims to observe how far advertising reects the covariation phenomena manifested in the different linguistic levels from the conjunction of certains social and contextual variables. The research aims, somehow, to make it clear that sociolinguistics adequacy in ads can increase the effectiveness of advertising communication. We present a qualitative study of a corpus formed by a total of 60 television commercials, selected taking into consideration age and gender of the speaker as the product or service publicized. On the basis of the results obtained, advertising communication reflects both the genderlect and agelect variation. Also, we have observed dierences in style and therefore advertising includes the diaphasic variation. However, we perceive the transmission of sociolinguistic stereotypes that encourage creation and difussion of certain sociocultural roles.

It is a tool that can be used for various – fair or unfair – purposes, according to the intention of the sender. Knowledge about eristics – neutrally understood as an organon – can be especially useful in the work of a teacher and pedagogue. This is explained in detail in Wprowadzenie do erystyki dla pedagogów – Logos. Poprawność formalna argumentu - the first article of the series on eristics. Wprowadzenie do erystyki dla pedagogów – Logos. Poprawność materialna argumentu is the second part of the series. The whole series of texts is dedicated to those teachers and pedagogues who want to develop their communication skills. The text focuses on the essence and methods of using logos tactic, with particular emphasis on techniques that are based on the content of the argument.

Abstract:
There has been little published literature examining the unique communication challenges older adults pose for health care providers. Using an explanatory mixed-methods design, this study explored patients’ and their family/caregivers’ experiences communicating with health care providers on a Canadian tertiary care, inpatient Geriatric unit between March and September 2018. In part 1, the modified patient–health care provider communication scale was used and responses scored using a 5-point scale. In part 2, one-on-one telephone interviews were conducted and responses transcribed, coded, and thematically analyzed. Thirteen patients and 7 family/caregivers completed part 1. Both groups scored items pertaining to adequacy of information sharing and involvement in decision-making in the lowest 25th percentile. Two patients and 4 family/caregivers participated in telephone interviews in part 2. Interview transcript analysis resulted in key themes that fit into the “How, When, and What” framework outlining the aspects of communication most important to the participants. Patients and family/caregivers identified strategic use of written information and predischarge family meetings as potentially valuable tools to improve communication and shared decision-making.

Abstract:
Introduction. Transformational changes in the economy require new scientific approaches to ensure the competitiveness of enterprises. One of the important aspects and factors of influence is business communications, which are realized in interpersonal relations, information exchange and management decision-making processes. Goal is a theoretical justification for the development of business communications in a changing environment. Methods. The article uses a monographic method, analysis, method of generalization of scientific approaches. Results. The article identifies scientific approaches to the essence of the concept of "communication", their characteristics, objectives and principles. The structuring of communication by socio-economic and technological components is substantiated. The purposes of internal communication at the enterprises in the conditions of changes are defined. There are two components of communication: socio-economic and technological. The author's interpretation of business communication in the conditions of changes as a set of measures, which provides for the formation and implementation of management decisions to create, develop the enterprise, maintain its reputation to meet consumer needs, organize decent work and pay, increase competitiveness. The tasks of business communications which will promote their further development at the enterprises in the conditions of changes are generalized. The principles of construction of effective communications at the enterprises in the conditions of changes are defined: the principle of the scientific approach; the principle of terminological certainty; unity of rational and emotional in human behavior; the principle of situationality; the principle of striving to increase the level of objectivity; the principle of humanism; the principle of development, or ontogenesis, of the subjects of communication; the principle of systematization of the subjects of communications; the principle of the probability of undiagnosed, hidden factors; the principle of incomplete adequacy of any complexity of behavior models of subjects; the principle of infinity of the process of cognition; principle of support of law; the principle of necessity and possibility of communication management. Conclusions. The conducted research allows to generalize scientific approaches to business communications at the enterprises in the conditions of changes and to define directions of scientific search concerning their development.

Abstract:
The objective of the research was to test the hypothesis about the relationship between the features of communicative situations and the perception of a stranger. Three types of situations were used, differing in the degree of the observer's involvement in communication: 1. looking at a photo image of the sitter, 2. watching a video with the sitter in communication, 3. communicating with the sitter “face to face”. It has been shown that the dynamics of interpersonal evaluations are multidirectional and depend rather on the diagnostic metrics used. Thus, the values of adequacy of evaluation of individual psychological features of the sitter are higher in the situation of photo perception as compared to the situations of video perception and face-to-face communication, at the same time the values of complexity of interpersonal evaluation (number of choices of neutral evaluation “0”) are lower in the situation of face-to-face communication and the situation of video perception as compared to the situation of photo perception. The study revealed the dynamics of interpersonal evaluations in different communicative situations, i.e. it was shown how situations influence the way the perception of a communication partner is formed.

Abstract:
Numerous solutions have been created for online anonymous communication. We do evaluations of security on several systems. We examine features such as Onion Routing, anonymous VPN services, probabilistic anonymity, and deterministic anonymity among different systems. There are also additional forms of anonymous communication that are discussed, including messaging, peer-to-peer communication, using the web, emailing, and using other Internet apps. We then go on to show several attack methods that aim to identify people who communicate anonymously. The objective of the research is to achieve an exact adjust between guaranteeing the adequacy and dependability of message delivery and ensuring customer anonymity. The NIAR model's non-interactive highlight makes it more valuable since it licenses secure communication without requiring nonstop client support. Communication privacy is threatened by an ever-growing volume of data generated by an ever-growing number of networked devices. Because of this, Anonymous Communication Systems (ACSs)—which offer the privacy qualities of anonymity, unsinkability, and observability—are recommended to conceal the relationship between transmitted communications and their senders and recipients. The objective of this essay is to evaluate the literature on Dining Cryptographers Networks (DCNs) in the subject of ACSs. Since the DCN-based techniques offer unconditional guarantees of observability, they are information-theoretically safe. Their computation and communication expense was considered high at the time, and scalability issues arose, which originally impeded their use for anonymous communications. By satisfying these targets, the research improves the state of encrypted communication systems and opens the door to a day when protecting client security will be a best need without sacrificing message delivery's significant dependability and efficiency.

Abstract:
With the ongoing digital transformation, accountants will need a more technological profile and greater mastery of transversal skills. In this context, higher education institutions (HEIs) assume a fundamental role, as they must adapt the teaching methodologies of accounting courses to meet new market demands. This study aims to identify the transversal skills most needed by accounting professionals to meet market demands and analyze the suitability of higher education in Portugal for the development of those skills. To this end, semi-structured interviews were carried out with people who directly or indirectly deal with accounting professionals and focus groups that included lecturers, students, and recent graduates. Conclusions indicate that communication is the most valuable transversal skill to respond to the new requirements of the profession, followed by being proactive, showing initiative, successful teamwork, and the ability to adapt to new contexts. Accountants are also required to invest more time in information and communication technologies (ICT) training. Evidence indicates that accounting education in Portugal does not seem to adequately prepare students with these skills, continuing to rely on traditional approaches to teaching and assessment.

Abstract:
Summary Objectives: The aim of this paper is to examine the adequacy of the concept of Physician Order Entry (POE) as a model for clinical systems, and to suggest an alternative understanding of the order creation and communication process. Methods: The study is based on an interpretative analysis of POE as a model for clinical systems and the results of our recent fieldwork. Results: Observations from our recent fieldwork suggest that orders, like patient care in general, emerge from interactions among patients, physicians, nurses, family members, and others, employing a variety of technologies and information resources in the process. Orders as we have observed them originate, are negotiated, and are carried out in a dynamically evolving group with fluctuating membership and shifting role responsibilities. Furthermore, orders by themselves represent only a partial picture of what is done for the patient. Conclusion: We argue that information systems are more likely to be helpful if they accommodate and facilitate POE as a multidisciplinary collaboration effort and fit better into the larger system of patient care.
