Abstract:
Public knowledge and understanding of health disparities is critical to generate support for programs and policies that address social determinants of health (SDH). Yet, public programs and policies are little informed by evidence or the link between SDH and health outcomes. This case study, using community-based participatory research principles, draws from the evidence of SDH and communication sciences. We describe Project IMPACT, an intervention to build capacity among community-based organizations (CBOs) to engage with media strategically, with the goal of influencing the information environment. The case offers an example of implementation science supporting an evidence-based approach, rather than a specific program or practice. We report how IMPACT leveraged the role community partners play in legitimizing issues so SDH and disparities are part of the public agenda. We assessed how strategic media engagement practices were implemented with the ultimate goal of changing public understanding of SDH and disparities to support SDH-related policies.

Abstract:
Part II offers a number of proposals and suggestions for recovering meaning in social science research at the individual, institutional, and policy levels. These measures offer the prospect of many small ‘wins’ through which the system can be reformed, rather than one sweeping programme for change. This chapter addresses the identities of individual researchers and the research methodologies they use in their work, and encourages a different approach at the level of individual and group research practices and its outcomes. It argues for new scholarly identities and many different ways of fashioning them, in which research is one, but not the only, important practice. Teaching, outreach activities, and academic citizenship, it is argued, are also important aspects of scholarship. So too are thinking and reading in depth and breadth, writing textbooks and book reviews, journalistic pieces and blogs. Chapters 7 and 8 will address institutional and policy issues.

Abstract:
Cultural beliefs and practices can markedly influence a woman’s pregnancy and childbirth experiences, and may shape her mothering behaviour. In addition, dietary intake before and during pregnancy and through lactation is often influenced by cultural beliefs and practices. As some traditional health care beliefs and food practices favoured in different cultures appear to result from efforts to address specific environmental challenges, it is important to recognize and respect these beliefs while guiding women towards optimum nutrition and away from harmful practices or prohibitions. This chapter discusses the implications of some common food practices, as well as cultural practices that are specific to pregnancy and lactation, on maternal and infant health.

Fedosov, Anton. Supporting the Design of Technology-Mediated Sharing Practices. Carl Grossmann, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.24921/2020.94115943.

Full text
Abstract:
Online social networks have made sharing personal experiences with others mostly in form of photos and comments a common activity. The convergenceof social, mobile, cloud and wearable computing expanded the scope of usergeneratedand shared content on the net from personal media to individual preferencesto physiological details (e.g., in the form of daily workouts) to informationabout real-world possessions (e.g., apartments, cars). Once everydaythings become increasingly networked (i.e., the Internet of Things), future onlineservices and connected devices will only expand the set of things to share. Given that a new generation of sharing services is about to emerge, it is of crucialimportance to provide service designers with the right insights to adequatelysupport novel sharing practices. This work explores these practices within twoemergent sharing domains: (1) personal activity tracking and (2) sharing economyservices. The goal of this dissertation is to understand current practices ofsharing personal digital and physical possessions, and to uncover correspondingend-user needs and concerns across novel sharing practices, in order to map thedesign space to support emergent and future sharing needs. We address this goalby adopting two research strategies, one using a bottom-up approach, the otherfollowing a top-down approach. In the bottom-up approach, we examine in-depth novel sharing practices within two emergent sharing domains through a set of empirical qualitative studies. We offer a rich and descriptive account of peoples sharing routines and characterizethe specific role of interactive technologies that support or inhibit sharingin those domains. We then design, develop, and deploy several technology prototypesthat afford digital and physical sharing with the view to informing the design of future sharing services and tools within two domains, personal activitytracking and sharing economy services. In the top-down approach, drawing on scholarship in human-computer interaction (HCI) and interaction design, we systematically examine prior workon current technology-mediated sharing practices and identify a set of commonalitiesand differences among sharing digital and physical artifacts. Based uponthese findings, we further argue that many challenges and issues that are presentin digital online sharing are also highly relevant for the physical sharing in thecontext of the sharing economy, especially when the shared physical objects havedigital representations and are mediated by an online platform. To account forthese particularities, we develop and field-test an action-driven toolkit for designpractitioners to both support the creation of future sharing economy platformsand services, as well as to improve the user experience of existing services. This dissertation should be of particular interest to HCI and interaction designresearchers who are critically exploring technology-mediated sharing practicesthrough fieldwork studies, as well to design practitioners who are building and evaluating sharing economy services.

Abstract:
Integrative medicine (IM), defined as the appropriate use of all evidence-based healthcare practices and professions—complementary and conventional—is evolving as an important aspect of preventive medicine in the last twenty years to achieve population health. With the creation of the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council in the United States, representing cabinet-level agencies, there was an opportunity to truly reform the basic approach to preventive medicine from an integrative perspective. Other advances in prevention show the steady global progress of integrative preventive medicine (IPM) in both concept and operations. As these developments evolve, what lessons can we learn from the last twenty years of IM to make a difference in establishing and maintaining a healthy and resilient population in the twenty-first century? This chapter summarizes some of those lessons and describes a vision for IPM in addressing the current health challenges faced by the world.

Abstract:
The private practice of mental health is a vibrant, thriving, and financially rewarding career path. Yet, many individuals who are considering entering private practice may have heard, or believe, a number of “myths” about private mental health practice. Believing these myths may result in not going into private practice and missing out on a wonderful career, or for those who enter private practice, it may result in a number of costly mistakes. These mistakes may have clinical, ethical, legal, and financial consequences. The authors of this book share practical advice based on their decades of clinical experience to address common myths about private practice in an easily accessible manner. Myths addressed fall into the broad areas of preparing for private practice, building your practice, managing your practice, documentation and record keeping, and ethical practice. Each chapter addresses a specific myth that may be believed, describes the myth, explains why the myth exists, and then offers specific guidance for moving beyond the myth. Accurate information is provided to help the reader avoid common pitfalls, and practice ethically, legally, and with clinical effectiveness. In addition to the specific recommendations and strategies provided in each chapter, each section offers a list of key resources available for additional guidance and support. This book is easy to read. It’s as if you are sitting with the authors and getting an in-person and practical consultation that is specific to your practice.

Higashida, Masateru. Developmental Social Work in Disability Issues. Glasstree, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.20850/9781534299863.

Full text
Abstract:
(This is a full colour version.) In this ambitious book composed of the author’s published articles, he develops practical and theoretical frameworks for social work in disability issues. He explores practical strategies for promoting social and economic participation of disabled people from the perspective of developmental social work, whilst examining the situation of their socioeconomic participation in rural Sri Lanka. Based on these theoretical and practical frameworks, together with policy analysis of community-based rehabilitation (CBR), the field research was undertaken collaboratively with local stakeholders in three districts. The findings suggest that developmental social work practices, including an indigenous approach, social investment, and a multi-sectoral approach, could address the vicious cycle of inadequate education, poverty, and marginalisation. This book also explores the implications of these findings for policy and practice in other contexts.

Abstract:
Schools have become the default mental health providers for children and adolescents, but they are often poorly equipped to meet the mental health needs of their students. The introduction tackles how to make students eligible for school-based services using the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Using the new DSM-5 as an organizing principle, this book then addresses the 12 most common mental disorders of childhood and adolescence, ages 3–18. While there are many books that address child and adolescent psychopathology, this book focuses on how to help students with mental disorders in pre-K–12 schools. Each chapter addresses the prevalence of a disorder in school-age populations, appropriate diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, comorbid disorders, rapid assessment instruments available, school-based interventions using multitiered systems of support, and easy-to-follow suggestions for progress monitoring. Unique to this book, each chapter has detailed suggestions for how school-based clinicians can collaborate with teachers, parents, and community providers to address the needs of youth with mental health problems so that school, home, and community work together. Each chapter ends with a list of extensive web resources and a real-life case example drawn from the clinical practice of the authors. The final chapter addresses two newly proposed diagnoses for self-harm in the DSM-5 and brings a cautious and sensible approach to assessing and helping students who may be at risk for serious self-injury or suicide.
