Lyon, Aidan. Kolmogorov’s Axiomatization and Its Discontents. Edited by Alan Hájek and Christopher Hitchcock. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199607617.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Kolmogorov's axiomatization of probability is the standard probability axiom system that most people learn in high school or university. And it is widely considered to be undeniably true—in much the same way that arithmetic seems to be undeniably true. However, over the years, various philosophers, mathematicians, statisticians, and scientists have found potential faults with Kolmogorov's axiom system. In this chapter these potential faults are reviewed and discussed. Among them are the problematic countable additivity, as well as finite additivity. The chapter also includes critical examinations of conditional probability, positive real numbers and sets and algebras as deployed by Kolmogorov.

Hawes, Clement. Gulliver Effects. Edited by Alan Downie. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199566747.013.031.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been difficult to place Gulliver’s Travels within a post-Wattsian account of the novel’s emergence and consolidation. Nevertheless, Swift’s text had important effects on the genre he so tellingly satirized. There is, for instance, a Gulliverian source for Fielding’s later assaults both on ‘realism’ and on ontological individualism. The brilliant denunciation of war near the end of Gulliver is likewise extended and novelistically developed in Tristram Shandy. Smollett’s curmudgeonly narrator in Humphry Clinker can be usefully understood as his contribution to Swift’s ‘satirist-satirized’ topos. Frances Burney’s Evelina appropriates Swift’s simian ‘Yahoo’ theme by way of mocking the English upper class. Finally, Swift’s ‘degeneration’ topos is played out as an Irish family saga in Maria Edgeworth’s Castle Rackrent. Though not a novel as such, Gulliver’s Travels is necessary to understand the novel’s history.

Cohen, Matthew Isaac. Gamelanesque effects. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199352227.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Standard accounts of gamelan’s internationalization focus on the growth of gamelan as an ‘ethnic ensemble’ in university and community settings, in touring gamelan troupes, and in intercultural abduction. To complicate this narrative, this chapter examines the Polish composer-pianist Leopold Godowsky and the American composer Henry Eichheim, who approached gamelan to convey impressions of a distant land in the manner of the travelogue, and the place of gamelan in the development of universalist musical theories and practices in American early-twentieth-century educational settings. During this period, audiences were rarely exposed directly to gamelan music; instead they experienced distant approximations or interpretations. Such ‘gamelanesque’ music provided a fantasy of the musical ‘Other’ and anti-modern escapism.
