Full textThe fire extinguishing systems currently used to protect military land vehicles use the gas FM200, which meets a requirement of the Montreal Protocol on species that deplete the ozone layer. However, its significant global warming potential means it urgently needs to be replaced. At the same time, research on water mist has intensified since the 1990s, as a fire extinguishing system that neither depletes the ozone layer nor has a global warming potential. The aim of this thesis is to study the feasibility of a water mist with additives as a fire extinguishing system for the protection of the engine compartments of military and civilian vehicles. The finely sprayed water can be added with substances that modify its physical and chemical properties and give the resulting solution improved characteristics and extinguishing performance. An exhaustive review of the literature has highlighted the paradoxical existence of solvents, highly flammable species, as additives for the water mist. In order to quantify the impact of these species on the extinguishing performance, the first step was to characterize the interaction between a flame and a water mist, in the presence of variable ventilation. Particle image velocimetry measurements were used to identify critical values for ventilation and injection pressure. Secondly, a solvent-added water mist in varying concentrations was studied using seven linear primary alcohols, from methanol to heptanol. A statistical analysis identified pentanol and butanol as the best linear primary alcohols as water mist additives. The reduction of the extinguishing time compared with only water is due to the increased cooling of the flame zone provided by the alcohol additives

Full textIgnition by non-resonant laser breakdown of quiescent reactive mixtures was considered in this experimental study working with gaseous state. In this work, we mainly study the ignition of n-decane / air (C₁₀H₂₂+N₂+O₂) mixtures. This system is considered promising in different future strategies regarding ignitions systems for internal combustion engines. The breakdown is generated by focusing a high intensity laser beam for a few nanoseconds using Nd: YAG laser operating at 1064 nm, it is chosen as the laser source for all experiments conducted here. The experimental plan conducted allows to examine the effect of physical, optical, thermodynamic (pressure) and chemicals (additives: H₂O, Ar) on the characteristics of the laser ignition. This study implements a statistical approach on all the experimental cases taking into account all the measures during breakdown and combustion. This manuscript provides bibliographic basis for understanding combustion and laser breakdown phenomenology

Full textContamination of wines by undesired microorganisms may lead to significant deterioration of the final product. To combat these problems, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the most widely used additive for its antiseptic and antioxidant properties. However, the limitation of chemical inputs in wines is one of the major concerns of consumers and producers. Existing physical stabilization processes (flash pasteurization, tangential filtration) have disadvantages, such as their energy cost or their complex maintenance. Two innovative processes to ensure the microbiological stabilization of wines as an alternative to conventional processes are studied: ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) and ohmic heating. UV-C radiation (100 to 280 nm) is known for its germicidal effect and already applied in the treatment of water and surfaces. However, absorbent liquids, such as wine, strongly limit the penetration depth of the radiation and hence the efficiency of the process. A helical UV-C reactor was developed, based on the hydrodynamic properties of Dean vortices, to improve the efficiency and homogeneity of the treatment. The stabilization performance was validated for the first time as an alternative to the SO2 mutage of sweet wines and before the bottling of finished wines. Moreover, the chemical and sensory analyzes carried out on the treated wines showed no impact on the quality of wines. Ohmic heating is used in this study as a method of thermal stabilization of musts and wines. During the passage of a current through a material having an electrical resistance, the electrical energy is transformed into thermal energy. The heat is then generated inside the material to be treated. The results of this work showed for the first time that heating rate and homogeneity of ohmic heating allow an effective stabilization of musts and wines without affecting their quality

Full textThis work proposes to quantify by a rigorous experimental methodology the effect of mineral additions on the water requirement and the superplasticizer requirement variation of mortars, their contribution to filling the porosity and to improving the mechanical strength, and their action to the transfer properties and to the chemical resistance in hard aggressive medium. The principal mixture proportion variables are the mineralogical nature, fineness and quantity of the addition, the cement type and proportioning. The obtained results show that the additions, independently of their nature and until a certain quantity, contribute to maintain the mortars transfer properties without forming a high volume of new hydrated products able to reduce open porosity. On the other hand, the additions nature and fineness are determining for their contribution to the mechanical strength development and in a lesser extent to the chemical resistance

Full textCurrently , the molds used for making aircraft composite piecess are made of metal alloys ( FeNi Invar ) popular for their low coefficient of expansion. However, these alloys have several drawbacks ( weight, price , delivery time ) which encourage manufacturers to rotate to other materials. In this context, the epoxy composites / carbon fibers are an interesting altemative given their mechanical properties similar to Invar while combining lightness and ease of implementation . However , with such molds, phenomena of adhesion may occur between the infused epoxy resin constituting the future piece , and the mold itself made of an epoxy resin. Their close nature promotes diffusion phenomena or molecular interactions involved in the adhesion of polymers. The works presented in this thesis is therefore to minimize all phenomena promoting the adhesion between two epoxy resins (one being cured in contact with the second). To do this, the work is focused on sustainable change in the physicochemistry and the surface topography of the epoxy resin component mold. These two parameters are indeed identified as essential for obtaining surfaces prerequisited low wetting character , for good adhesion with a third body. At first , the physicochemistry of the resin surface of the mold was permanently changed using a fluorinated additive grafted beforehand on the epoxy resin. The mechanism of fluorination of the surface has been studied and a critical step in migration of the fluorinated additive towards the air / resin interface during curing has been identified. In a second step , a controlled micrometer scale roughness is applied to the surface of the resin as amended . The surface properties arising are studied and show an accentuation of low wetting character of fluorinated resins . Finally, the properties of interfaces between the modified epoxy resins constituting the mold and blank epoxy resin representing a molded part are studied via a mechanical test. The results obtained ( strength and type of failure ) are put in contact with the surface of the modified epoxy resin properties
