Full textThe aim of this study was to examine whether parents of children with ADHD/ADD felt that their children received the support they needed in school and how the children were treated by the school staff. Furthermore, we examined how parents felt that the interaction between the school and the student affected their children. The study used a qualitative method in which the collected material was interpreted though symbolic interactionism and labeling theory. Four parents with children with ADHD/ADD have been interviewed. The results showed that parents felt that their children had inadequate or no assistance and some children were treated unfavorably by school staff. Parents also suggested that the interaction between school and child affected the child negatively because they were unfavorably treated and did not receive sufficient support. The conclusion of the study showed that the parents felt that school support activities and attitudes of the staff had a negative effect on their children’s ability to cope with school and their self-image.

Full textIntroduction: Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADHD/ADD) and Austim Spectrums Disorder (ASD) are lifelong conditions that often causes severe consequences for the individual. The co-existens of related neurodevelopmental disorders as well as mental and physical illness is common. Knowledge about motor performance in adults is limited. Aims: To explore och describe motor performance in adults diagnosed with ADHD, ADD och Austism Spectrum Disorder. To performe group comparisons and explore differences between groups. Methods: The population consisted of 151 inividuals diagnosed as adults. Motor abilities were examined using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, second edition, a reference-based test of fine och gross motor skills. BOT-2 consits of eight subscales organized in four composits, and a total score. One Way ANOVA, independent t-test, Kruskal- Wallis test and Mann Whitney U statistic tests were used in the analysis. Descriptive data was analysed according to normbased data in BOT-2. Resultat: In the population 56% perform within average and 39 % below average in Total Point score, compared to values in BOT-2. All groups performed below average in Manual Coordination. Most deficits appeared in the ASD group. The ASD group scored significantly lower in bilateral coordination and balance compared to the ADHD and ADD group. In Fine Motor Control the ADHD group performed significantly lower than the ADD group. Conclusion: Deficits in motor performance appears to be common in adults with the diagnosis ADHD, ADD och ASD, especially among individuals with ASD. When adults are clinically investigated, motor abilities should also be adressed. Further studies exploring motor abilities is recommended.

The use of workflow techniques in scientific computing is widely adopted in the execution of experiments and building in silico models. By analysing some challenges faced by a scientific application in the geosciences domain, we noticed that workflows could be used to represent the geological models created using the application so as to ease the development of features to meet those challenges. Most works and tools on the scientific workflows domain, however, are designed for use in distributed computing contexts like web services and grid computing, which makes them unsuitable for integration or use within simpler scientific applications. In this dissertation, we discuss how to make viable the composition and representation of workflows within an existing scientific application. We describe a conceptual architecture of a workflow engine designed to be used within a stand-alone application. We also describe an implementation model of this architecture in a C plus plus application using Petri nets to model a workflow and C plus plus functions to represent tasks. As proof of concept, we implement this workflow model in an existing application and studied its impact on the application.
Burkette, Jerry W. Jr. "What Does Theism Add to Ethical Naturalism?" Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83836.
Full textMaster of Arts
Realists, roughly summarized, are those metaethicists who believe that some moral propositions have truth values, that some (or at least one) of those propositions turn out to be true, and that if rational agents disagree on the truth value of a particular moral proposition, only one of them has the possibility of being correct. Broadly construed, moral realists tend to fall under one of two “tents”, preferring either naturalism (for which moral properties turn out to be wholly natural in constitution) or non-naturalism (which posits that at least some moral properties have, even if only partly, non-natural constituents as part of their make-up. Theists, who base their theories of morality on some facet of the nature or essence (or commands) of God, have tended to either be relegated in philosophical debate to a characterization of “supernaturalism” or to some seldom visited corner of the non-natural “tent” of moral realism. The former tends to limit theistic engagement in contemporary metaethical dialogue such that it can seem (at times) as if theists and non-theists are talking about two different subjects entirely. On the other hand, a non-naturalistic theory of theistic moral realism saddles the view with some fairly difficult metaphysical and epistemological baggage in the form of powerful objections levied against non-naturalistic theories in general. This paper explores another option for theism in light of very recent work by Gideon Rosen, namely his article examining the metaphysical implications of varieties of moral realism, particularly naturalistic ones. This article has already garnered a general characterization (within metaethical research, writ large) as being a “taxonomy” of naturalistic (and non-naturalistic, for that matter) theories. Specifically for my purposes here, Rosen suggests that divine command theory (and theistic metaethics in general) should be understood as being naturalistic in formulation. This would seem to be advantageous to theists, in that their metaethical theories might avoid either the bounded characterization of supernaturalism or the difficult challenges of non-naturalism. However, the theist, should she avail herself of naturalism in this regard, will need to tread carefully. Given that Rosen has couched his 'taxonomy' in terms of metaphysical grounding, I examine some resultant challenges for naturalistic theistic metaethics, concluding they can be overcome, as well as a related objection to non-theistic naturalism that arise as a result of the same grounding discussion coupled with the resources theists can leverage in a naturalistic context.

Full textMomentum can be explained as a passive strategy which is rebalanced continually over time. It can be divided into a long position in observed “winners”, and a short position in observed “losers”. This study tries to find out if some kind of liquidity strategy can increase any abnormal return generated by a conventional momentum strategy. Our data is based on monthly returns from all listed companies at Stockholm Stock Exchange between January 1997 and June 2005. We have, in addition to a plain momentum strategy, composed four different liquidity strategies, based on four different observing periods and four different holding periods. Our findings show that momentum has been present during our observation period, where the most profitable portfolio has an observation period of 3 months and a holding period of 6 months, and generates an abnormal return of 253 percent. Or findings from adding liquidity as a second component show that the most profitable strategy is to reverse the high-low strategy with observe and hold periods of 12 months, which has generated an abnormal return of 345% and a risk-adjusted alpha of 0.411. We can also conclude that additional abnormal and risk-adjusted return has been generated by adding liquidity as a second component to plain momentum. Overall the prevailing strategy regarding liquidity is to go long in low volume loser or short in high volume losers. We also find that the most extreme values are generated in the 12 month holding period portfolios. Reasonable explanations for these findings might be derived from a potential steeper upside in low liquidity losers, company specific characteristics and behavioural theories, but can not be concluded beyond reasonable doubt out of the results in this paper.

Business forecasting frequently combines quantitative time series techniques with qualitative expert opinion overrides to create a final consensus forecast. The objective of these overrides is to reduce forecast error, which enables safety stock reduction, customer service improvement, and manufacturing schedule stability. However, these overrides often fail to improve final forecast accuracy. Process mis-steps include small adjustments, adjustments to accurate statistical forecasts, and adjustments to match financial goals. At best, these overrides waste scare forecasting resources; at worst, they seriously impact business performance. This report offers a framework for identifying overrides that are likely to improve forecast accuracy. A new class of metrics, Dispersion-Scaled Overrides, was developed as an input to the framework. Other inputs included statistical forecast accuracy and auto-correlation. Classification techniques were used to identify whether an override was likely to create forecast value add. These techniques were found to be approximately 80% accurate in predicting success. This result suggests that using Dispersion-Scaled Overrides alongside common forecast accuracy metrics can reliably predict forecast value add. In turn, this can maximize the value that experts add to the business forecasting process.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to get knowledge of experiences of the years in compulsory school and upper secondary school by pupils with neuropsychiatric disabilities. The questions dealt with when and where in school the pupils had difficulties connected to their neuropsychiatric disabilities, in what way they were met with understanding for their difficulties, how the school solved the problems, what the school could have done more and what qualities the pupils possessed that helped in school. I interviewed six youngsters in the ages of 18 - 21. I used half-structured interviews. The result was analysed in a sociocultural perspective and showed that the pupils had difficulties in many ways at school. Big classes and noises in the classroom made their concentration difficulties worse. Projects in school without strict directions as well as appearances before the class became huge barriers for some of the pupils, while teaching at a too low level led to a lack of motivation. In upper level of compulsory school the pupils felt stress and difficulties in finding classrooms. Some other problems were phobias, insomnia and participating in school gymnastics. Bullying and exclusion from fellowship was usual. Even teachers were insulting the pupils by indicating them as outsiders, blaming them for their difficulties and punishing them. The pupils experienced that they were mostly met with misunderstanding and a lack of knowledge from the school. Just a few teachers were sympathetic. The school mostly took measures very late and the solutions therefore became short-lived. Some of the measures made the problems even worse. The pupils told me about their strong sides that helped them through school. The result showed that smaller classes as well as teachers knowledge and ability to converse and listen to the pupils are important instruments to be able to face the problems in an early phase and create a school for all kinds of minds.

Full textBackground: The school nurse and the student health service have a fundamental mission to promote students health to enforce school performance. Students with attention deficit without hyperactivity can be difficult to detect as the pupil does not disturb others but find it difficult to follow the education. Students with these disabilities are experiencing varied support from the school which can have a negative impact on academic performance and self-esteem. Aim: To describe school nurses experience of how to support students with ADD. Method: An empirical interview study was conducted using semi-structured questions asked to nine school nurses working in elementary and secondary schools. A qualitative content analysis was used for the analysis of the collected data. Result: Three categories emerged from the result: "To be there for the student", "To interact in the school health team", and "To act as an informative link". An overall theme emerged as "Support built on knowledge and understanding”. Conclusion: The school nurse supports students with ADD by working health promoting through being available, be responsive to student needs and by lifting student needs to the school health team. He/she also works as a collaborative link between all participants to follow up the support over time. However it requires some knowledge about ADD to be able to provide support for these students.

Full textAbstract
Brand management will play a more significant role in future marketing competition, so research on the brand management is likely to become more meaningful and interesting.
This thesis focuses on brand management. The research question here is if brand management can add value to firms, as well as how to connect brand management with value. When researching this question, it is necessary to research further on the division of brand management which is internal and external brand management. Because a company’s add value is from cooperation - connection of internal and external brand management. Only when internal and external brand management work together, closely, may brand management add more value to a firm.
This study builds on the Aaker David (2000 p89)’s theory on brand management. In methodology, I use a qualitative research method, which is company interviews, in order to research IKEA’s internal/external brand management experience. This case study helps me to analyze how brand management is connected to a firm’s value.
Through IKEA’s case, it is illustrated that internal and external brand management must combine in order to add value to a firm. Brand management can really create value like increasing more adaptability, uniqueness, recognition etc... All in all, brand management is significant and can add value to firms.

The human resources (HR) function has evolved significantly over the past several decades. It has grown in maturity and influence while simultaneously enduring great criticism from employees and managers. Meanwhile, environmental pressures have forced business leaders and academics to call for the elevation of HR to a level of strategic primacy. This thesis examines the relationship between organizational human capital and the professional HR function, looking at the history and current state of HR, perceptions of HR's efficacy, trends in innovative organizational design and leadership, and the future of human capital management. I explore these issues in the academic and popular literature, survey managers and experts in the field, and present an intra-industry study across several biotechnology firms.
