Abstract:
Smart cities require interactive management of water supply networks and water meters play an important role in such a task. As compared to fully mechanical water meters, electromechanical water meters or fully electronic water meters can collect real-time information through automatic meter reading (AMR), which makes them more suitable for smart cities applications. In this paper, we first study the design principles of existing water meters, and then present our design and implementation of a self-powered smart water meter. The proposed water meter is based on a water turbine generator, which serves for two purposes: (i) to sense the water flow through adaptive signal processing performed on the generated voltage; and (ii) to produce electricity to charge batteries for the smart meter to function properly. In particular, we present the design considerations and implementation details. The wireless transceiver is integrated in the proposed water meter so that it can provide real-time water flow information. In addition, a mobile phone application is designed to provide a user with a convenient tool for water usage monitoring.

Abstract:
Reflective phenomena often occur in the detecting process of pointer meters by inspection robots in complex environments, which can cause the failure of pointer meter readings. In this paper, an improved k-means clustering method for adaptive detection of pointer meter reflective areas and a robot pose control strategy to remove reflective areas are proposed based on deep learning. It mainly includes three steps: (1) YOLOv5s (You Only Look Once v5-small) deep learning network is used for real-time detection of pointer meters. The detected reflective pointer meters are preprocessed by using a perspective transformation. Then, the detection results and deep learning algorithm are combined with the perspective transformation. (2) Based on YUV (luminance-bandwidth-chrominance) color spatial information of collected pointer meter images, the fitting curve of the brightness component histogram and its peak and valley information is obtained. Then, the k-means algorithm is improved based on this information to adaptively determine its optimal clustering number and its initial clustering center. In addition, the reflection detection of pointer meter images is carried out based on the improved k-means clustering algorithm. (3) The robot pose control strategy, including its moving direction and distance, can be determined to eliminate the reflective areas. Finally, an inspection robot detection platform is built for experimental study on the performance of the proposed detection method. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only has good detection accuracy that achieves 0.809 but also has the shortest detection time, which is only 0.6392 s compared with other methods available in the literature. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a theoretical and technical reference to avoid circumferential reflection for inspection robots. It can adaptively and accurately detect reflective areas of pointer meters and can quickly remove them by controlling the movement of inspection robots. The proposed detection method has the potential application to realize real-time reflection detection and recognition of pointer meters for inspection robots in complex environments.

Abstract User-transformer relation identification plays an important role in the correct management of low-voltage area archives and the improvement of line loss. In order to obtain an accurate user-transformer relation identification, this paper proposes a user-transformer relation identification method in the low-voltage area based on power balance model and adaptive artificial fish swarm algorithm(AFSA). This method uses the summation relationship between the total meter of the transformer and the user’s meter/meter box to fit the coefficients of the power balance equation through the AFSA, then we use the coefficients and related statistical values to judge the user-transformer relation. The main innovations are: this paper proposes a power balance model to solve the problem of user-transformer relation identification, which is simpler than previous methods and has strong operability; AFSA is used to fit the regression coefficients of the power balance equation, which has advantages in calculation accuracy and efficiency compared with the traditional least squares method; an improvement strategy of adaptive step length is proposed to make the ability of AFSA to find superior stronger. By selecting real station data for verification, the result shows that the method in this paper can quickly and accurately identify user’s meters/meter boxes with abnormal user-transformer relationship, the method in this paper has high computational efficiency and recognition accuracy without additional labor and hardware costs.

Inference latency has become a crucial metric in running Deep Neural Network (DNN) models on various mobile and edge devices. To this end, latency prediction of DNN inference is highly desirable for many tasks where measuring the latency on real devices is infeasible or too costly. Yet it is very challenging and existing approaches fail to achieve a high accuracy of prediction, due to the varying model-inference latency caused by the runtime optimizations on diverse edge devices. In this paper, we propose and develop nn-Meter, a novel and efficient system to accurately predict the DNN inference latency on diverse edge devices. The key idea of nn-Meter is dividing a whole model inference into kernels, i.e., the execution units on a device, and conducting kernel-level prediction. nn-Meter builds atop two key techniques: (i) kernel detection to automatically detect the execution unit of model inference via a set of well-designed test cases; and (ii) adaptive sampling to efficiently sample the most beneficial configurations from a large space to build accurate kernel-level latency predictors. nn-Meter achieves significant high prediction accuracy on four types of edge devices.

At present, the main way for electric power companies to check the accuracy of electric meters is that professionals regularly bring standard electric meters to the site for verification. With the widespread application of smart meters and the development of data processing technology, remote error estimation based on the operating data of smart meters becomes possible. In this paper, an error estimation method of smart meter based on clustering and adaptive gradient descent method is proposed. Firstly, the fuzzy c-means clustering method is used to preprocess the data to classify the operating conditions of each measurement, and then the adaptive gradient descent method is used to establish the error estimation model. The simulation results show that this method has high error estimation accuracy. This method has a small amount of calculation and high reliability and is suitable for large-scale power grids.

Automatic reading of pointer meters is of great significance for efficient measurement of industrial meters. However, existing algorithms are defective in the accuracy and robustness to illumination shooting angle when detecting various pointer meters. Hence, a novel algorithm for adaptive detection of different pointer meters was presented. Above all, deep learning was introduced to detect and recognize scale value text in the meter dial. Then, the image was rectified and meter center was determined based on text coordinate. Next, the circular arc scale region was transformed into a linear scale region by polar transform, and the horizontal positions of pointer and scale line were obtained based on secondary search in the expanded graph. Finally, the distance method was used to read the scale region where the pointer is located. Test results showed that the algorithm proposed in this paper has higher accuracy and robustness in detecting different types of meters.

At present, pointer meters are still widely used because of their mechanical stability and electromagnetic immunity, and it is the main trend to use a computer vision-based automatic reading system to replace inefficient manual inspection. Many correction and recognition algorithms have been proposed for the problems of skew, distortion, and uneven illumination in the field-collected meter images. However, the current algorithms generally suffer from poor robustness, enormous training cost, inadequate compensation correction, and poor reading accuracy. This paper first designs a meter image skew-correction algorithm based on binary mask and improved Mask-RCNN for different types of pointer meters, which achieves high accuracy ellipse fitting and reduces the training cost by transfer learning. Furthermore, the low-light enhancement fusion algorithm based on improved Retinex and Fast Adaptive Bilateral Filtering (RBF) is proposed. Finally, the improved ResNet101 is proposed to extract needle features and perform directional regression to achieve fast and high-accuracy readings. The experimental results show that the proposed system in this paper has higher efficiency and better robustness in the image correction process in a complex environment and higher accuracy in the meter reading process.

Two presented methods were developed to improve classical preset time count rate meters by using adapt able signal processing tools. An optimized detection algorithm that senses the change of mean count rate was implemented in both methods. Three low-pass filters of various structures with adaptable parameters to implement the control of the mean count rate error by suppressing the fluctuations in a controllable way, were considered and one of them implemented in both methods. An adaptation algorithm for preset time interval calculation executed after the low-pass filter was devised and implemented in the first method. This adaptation algorithm makes it possible to obtain shorter preset time intervals for higher stationary mean count rate. The adaptation algorithm for preset time interval calculation executed before the low-pass filter was devised and implemented in the second method. That adaptation algorithm enables sensing of a rapid change of the mean count rate before fluctuations suppression is carried out. Some parameters were fixed to their optimum values after appropriate optimization procedure. Low-pass filters have variable number of stationary coefficients depending on the specified error and the mean count rate. They implement control of the mean count rate error by suppressing fluctuations in a controllable way. The simulated and realized methods, using the developed algorithms, guarantee that the response time shall not exceed 2 s for the mean count rate higher than 2 s-1 and that controllable mean count rate error shall be within the range of ?4% to ?10%.

The paper focuses on the construction of separate model representations in the study of reliability of data obtained from environmental monitoring systems. Modern systems for monitoring environmental parameters are complex complexes of different technical and software tools. Special requirements to the quality of monitoring systems arise when they are used as subsystems in systems of responsible application, monitoring the state of critical energy facilities, mining, transport, and chemical production processes. One of the main reasons for reducing the reliability of such data is degradation processes in the primary meter, which are often installed in aggressive environments with an unsatisfactory set of parameters in the places where they are located. As a result of degradation effects, there is a significant decrease in the accuracy of primary meters, up to complete failures. An approach is described that allows increasing the duration of continuous operation of the system for monitoring environmental parameters. The basis of this approach is adaptive correction of primary meter readings in the event of a decrease in their accuracy due to degradation failures. It is noted that in order to identify interdependencies in such a system, it is necessary to conduct a simulation of the adaptation process in the system for monitoring environmental parameters, and the task is to create such a model. The structure and equations of such a system are proposed, and the task of creating a simulation model of the system is set. Thus, the main task of the proposed approach is to extend the intervals between repairs of environmental monitoring systems. This is achieved by extending the service life of primary meters in the event of their degradation failures. This resource extension is achieved by creating an additional feedback channel with adaptive parameters in the system.

Two disruptive space telescope concepts are being designed and developed at the University of Arizona; these are the 20-meter OASIS (Orbiting Astronomical Satellite for Investigating Stellar Systems) and 8.5-meter Nautilus. OASIS combines break-through inflatable aperture and adaptive optics techniques to realize the dream of a 20+ meter class spaceborne terahertz/far-infrared telescope. In the Nautilus visible/near-infrared telescope concept, conventional primary mirrors are replaced by an ~8.5-meter MODE (Multi-order diffractive engineered) lens with 10 times lower areal density and up to 100 times lower mis-alignment sensitivity over traditional systems, enabling large-diameter optical space telescopes. The OASIS and Nautilus concepts have the potential to greatly reduce mission costs and risks compared to the current state of the art.

Coriolis flow meters are used in measuring flow amount of natural gas and oil due to the good performance and high precision. Orthogonal decomposition algorithm is the most efficient algorithm with the highest precision in processing the digital signals of Coriolis flow meters, and digital filter design is vital important in the algorithm. In this paper we introduce a digital filter system combining the self-adaptive lattice notch filter and low pass filter embedded with Hanning Window or Kaiser Window, we also discussed the parameters selection and adjusting method deeply and systematically. For self-adaptive lattice notch filter, we calculate the key feedback parameter ρ based on bandwidth BW, leading the relative error of frequency calculated within 0.01%. For low pass digital filter, we adjust the filter order through monitoring the sine feature of the orthogonal component that has passed the low pass filter, and the relative errors of phase difference are within 0.1%. We also demonstrate the feasibility of this system through simulation under MATALAB system and calculating experiments data of Coriolis flow meter.

AO is an indispensable component and has basically only one task, that is to operate the telescope at its maximum angular resolution, without optical degradations resulting from atmospheric seeing. Based on three decades of experience using AO usually as an add-on component, all extremely large telescopes and their instrumentation are designed for diffraction limited observations from the very beginning. This paper illuminates various approaches of the ELT, the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), and the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT), to fully integrate AO in their designs. The paper concludes with a brief look into the requirements that high-contrast imaging poses on AO.

When detecting low-attitude targets, the angular accuracy of the meter-wave radar will descend because of the multipath reflecting from ground. Since multipath signals can be regarded as multipath jamming coming from the mainlobe, we propose an angle measurement based on the mainlobe multipath jamming suppression through differential constraints technique. The weight of the new approach is obtained through certain constraints on the sum-difference beams, which can suppress the jamming and keep the curve of the monopulse ratio unchanged simultaneously. Then form sum-difference beams and calculate the ratio of the monopulse ratio of the target. Finally, obtain the angle of the target through the determination of the smallest difference between the monopulse ratio of the target and the quiescent monopulse ratio. The method proposed in this paper can preserve good precision of the measurement angle. The result is verified by computer simulation.

Abstract The power consumption readings of sub meter and total meter of distribution transformer of low-voltage users follow the law of conservation of energy. The meter power loss rate of abnormal low-voltage users must also be abnormal. This paper studies the solution of the meter power loss rate under the four abnormal power consumption scenarios of single (multi) user and full (partial) period. The traditional linear solution method has accurate identification effect for the abnormal power consumption scenario of full period, but it cannot identify the abnormal power consumption scenario of partial period. In this paper, an improved artificial fish swarm algorithm is proposed. By adjusting the fixed step to the adaptive step, the power loss rate of each sub meter is obtained, and the abnormal power users are pinpointed. The research results are verified by simulation examples on IEEE European Low Voltage Test Feeder. The results show that the improved artificial fish swarm algorithm in this paper can identify abnormal power users for the above four abnormal electric field scenarios. The algorithm provides a new alternative for the identification of abnormal low voltage users.

The approach is focused on detecting changes in the state of controlled resources of autonomous information and measurement systems: communication channel, processor, memory, and battery. An adaptive model is presented using a Bayesian classifier for estimating changes in the state of resources of autonomous information and measurement systems. The model is based on a probabilistic automaton with adaptive self-tuning. The paper describes an approach that allows increasing the duration of continuous operation of the system for monitoring environmental parameters. This approach is based on adaptive correction of primary meter readings in the event of a decrease in their accuracy due to degradation failures.

Smart metering is a central segment in realizing smart grid. However, a big question is whether Tanzanian power stakeholders are ready for smart metering technology investments for household applications. Operation and maintenance of a smart metering solution is a relatively new business in Tanzania and requires investment in resources and capacity building. A case study was conducted at the utility company in Dar es Salaam offices, to investigate the deployment status and services offered. Fixed tariff rates, high cost, low rates on returns of investment and non-customization of the features, were some of the shortcomings identified by the study in terms of non-deployment in residential homes. Further, the authors, propose development of standardization document for smart metering technologies and the adoption of software based smart meter for residential applications using Internet of Things platform. Actual stage of meter waveband radar evolution is the design of mobile radar with improved surveillance functions, as well as signal generation and processing. Such radars measure coordinates of aircraft in 3D space with adaptive change of operation frequency, parameters of probing signal, and polarization. Except radiolocation tasks, such radars allow to carry out integral information processing, EM analysis, ELINT, as well as jamming and clutter canceling, and must have height mobility and secrecy properties. The achievement of these properties is possible due to the application of digital antenna arrays with digital solid-state Tx/Rx modules, modular construction of all radar subsystems, digital beamforming technology, adoptive algorithms of space-time, and statistical processing of received signals. The prototype of meter-wavelength band radar system with height effectivity and informativity of radiolocation receiving, with the capability of fast moving and deploying is review in this article. The proposed radar system allows to provide measuring coordinates of an aircraft in 3D space, large distance detection, tracking and targeting of all types of aircrafts (including stealth aircrafts), carry out integral processing of radiolocation information, ELINT, EM analysis, as well as jamming and clatter canceling.

No dose volume parameter has been identified to predict late bowel toxicities in locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients treated with image-guided adaptive brachytherapy. We examined the incidence of bowel toxicities according to the total reference air kerma (TRAK) in 260 LACC patients. In both univariate and multivariate analysis, late morbidity positively correlated with a TRAK ≥2 cGy (centigray) at 1 meter, emphasizing the importance of this parameter in term of late bowel morbidity. Objective: There is no validated dose volume parameter to predict late bowel toxicities in cervical cancer patients treated with image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT). We examined the incidence of bowel toxicities according to the TRAK, which is proportional to the integral dose to the patients. Material/Methods: Clinical data of 260 LACC patients treated with curative intent from 2004 to 2016 were examined. Patients received chemoradiation plus a pulse-dose rate IGABT boost. The relationship between TRAK and morbidity was assessed by Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional-hazards model on event-free periods. Results: Median follow-up was 5.2 years (SE (Standard Error): 0.21). Probability of survival without late bowel toxicity Grade ≥ 2 rate for patients without recurrence (n = 227) at 5 years was 66.4% (SE 3.7). In univariate analysis, bowel and/or sigmoid dose/volume parameters were not significant. Late morbidity positively correlated with active smoking, CTVHR volume >25 cm3, and a TRAK ≥2 cGy at 1 meter. In multivariate analysis, the following factors were significant: Active smoking (p < 0.001; HR: 2.6; 95%CI: 1.4–5.0), and the TRAK (p = 0.02; HR: 2.4; 95%CI: 1.2–5.0). Conclusion: TRAK was associated with late bowel toxicities probability, suggesting that the integral dose should be considered, even in the era of IGABT.

AbstractSaturn’s largest moon Titan is the only satellite in the Solar System with a substantial atmosphere. Photolysis of methane creates a hydrocarbon haze in Titan’s atmosphere that is opaque to visible light. The new adaptive optics system on the 10–meter W. M. Keck Telescope enables us to observe Titan with a resolution of 0.04 arcseconds, or 20 resolution elements across the disk. By observing at near-infrared wavelengths that are methane band windows we can see through Titan’s hydrocarbon haze to the surface beneath. Recent adaptive optics images of Titan both in broadband (J, H, and K) filters and in narrowband filters that selectively probe Titan’s surface and atmosphere allow us to determine surface albedo and properties of the hydrocarbon haze layer. Future observations will include high-resolution spectroscopy coupled with adaptive optics to obtain spectra of individual surface features.

Independent metering systems (IMSs) have been applied and researched in mobile machinery due to their advantages of reduced throttling energy losses and remarkable advances under negative load through decoupling actuator throttling control. Although IMSs have the control flexibility to deal with negative workloads, the control performance of the IMSs is challenged by uncertain loads in mobile operations, limiting the control accuracy. In addition, if the motion reference is improperly specified and exceeds the constraints, the pressure of the actuator may oscillate significantly and potentially result in control instability. In this study, a constrained adaptive robust control strategy is proposed for an IMS. An adaptive robust control strategy is designed for the meter-in and meter-out throttling to achieve precision motion control despite the nonlinearities and uncertainties of the electro-hydraulic IMS. The value of the uncertain workload is estimated in real-time and utilized in the model-based controller to improve control accuracy. In addition, a constrained trajectory planning approach is presented to handle out-of-constraint references and ensure motion tracking performance. This effectively prevents pressure fluctuations caused by the inappropriate reference.

The system can use either natural or laser guide star beacons for sensing wavefront distortions induced by atmospheric turbulence. This paper describes the main parameters of the system and presents a few examples of experimental results. The best results are Strehl ratios of 0.64 (star beacon) and 0.48 (laser beacon), both having full-width-half-maximum point spread functions of 0.13 arc second (0.88 μm).

As the access to consumption data available in household smart meters is now very common in several developed countries, this kind of information is assuming a providential role for different players in the energy sector. The proposed study was applied to data available from the Smart Meter Energy Consumption Data in the London Households dataset, provided by UK Power Networks, containing half-hourly readings from an original sample of 5567 households (71 households were hereby carefully selected after a justified filtering process). The main aim is to forecast the day—ahead load profile, based only on previous load values and some auxiliary variables. During this research different forecasting models are applied, tested and compared to allow comprehensive analyses integrating forecasting accuracy, processing times and the interpretation of the most influential features in each case. The selected models are based on Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines, Random Forests and Artificial Neural Networks, and the accuracies resulted from each model are compared and confronted with a baseline (Naïve model). The different forecasting approaches being evaluated have been revealed to be effective, ensuring a mean reduction of 15% in Mean Absolute Error when compared to the baseline. Artificial Neural Networks proved to be the most accurate model for a major part of the residential consumers.

Annotation Purpose. Improving the efficiency of machine milking due to the improvement of milking equipment on the basis of the portion meter of the weight type. Methods. Studies have been conducted on the basis of the planned experiment. The data obtained were processed using the methods of regression analysis. Results. The technique of laboratory researches is developed, a prototype of a membrane regulator of vacuum is made and experimental researches of operating modes of the adaptive milking equipment on the basis of the portion meter of the weight type. According to the results of the research, the dependence between the parameters and the mode of operation of the membrane vacuum regulator was obtained. Conclusions. The dependence is obtained, between the vacuum pressure in the milk collection chamber of the collector, milk expense, the diameters of the milk pipe and the diameters of a throttle opening. The limit values of the intensity of milk output (0.2 m3/s) at which there is a critical drop in the working vacuum pressure in the milk collection chamber of the collector and the corresponding choke parameters (diameter of the throttle opening 0,001 m) are defined. It needs precise energy management systems that can forecast the usage of the consumers for future policymaking. Embedded smart sensors attached to electricity meters and home appliances enable power suppliers to effectively analyze the energy usage to generate and distribute electricity into residential areas based on their level of energy consumption. Therefore, this paper proposes a clustering-based analysis of energy consumption to categorize the consumers’ electricity usage into different levels. First, a deep autoencoder that transfers the low-dimensional energy consumption data to high-level representations was trained. Second, the high-level representations were fed into an adaptive self-organizing map (SOM) clustering algorithm. Afterward, the levels of electricity energy consumption were established by conducting the statistical analysis on the obtained clustered data. Finally, the results were visualized in graphs and calendar views, and the predicted levels of energy consumption were plotted over the city map, providing a compact overview to the providers for energy utilization analysis.

Description of Adaptive Physical Fitness Levels in Deaf Children Abstract This research began with the results of observations at one of the special schools (SLB) in West Lombok, where the school had never conducted an adaptive physical fitness test for students with special needs for the deaf. The level of adaptive physical fitness in deaf children is measured using the Eurofit test which consists of a bent arm hang test; the sit and reach; 50 meter run test; flamingo balance test; and hardvard step test. The research was conducted descriptively with the subject of 26 students divided into 14 boys and 12 girls. The results of the research on the bent arm hang test for men were 54% and women were 46% in the less and very less classification. The results of the study on the sit and reach test for men were 54% and women were 46% in the good, moderate, poor and very poor classifications. The results of the research on the 50 meter running test for men were 56% and women were 44% in the classification of being moderate, lacking, and very lacking. The results of the research on the flamingo balance test for 54% men and 46% women in the very good classification. The results of the research on the Harvard step test for men were 52% and women were 48% in the moderate, poor, and very poor classification.
