Cet article évalue l'adaptabilité inter-pays d'une échelle de mesure de l'innovativité des consommateurs pouvant s'appliquer à divers domaines spécifiques de la consommation (Goldsmith et Hofacker, 1991). Cette échelle a été développée, testée et validée aux Etats-Unis uniquement. L'adaptabilité de l'instrument à d'autres contextes est évaluée dans le domaine spécifique du cinéma, à travers l'étude de ses propriétés psychométriques dans trois pays (Canada, France et Israël). Les implications théoriques, méthodologiques et managériales de cette évaluation sont discutées.

Cet article présente les degrés d’accord interjuges entre deux évaluateurs pour les nouveaux domaines, la littératie et la numératie, du Programme EIS Évaluation Intervention Suivi, une adaptation francophone de l’Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (AEPS). Depuis plusieurs années, les tests d’évaluation conventionnels du développement sont source d’insatisfaction pour les intervenants oeuvrant auprès d’enfants présentant des incapacités, en raison des protocoles d’administration rigides et des exercices d’évaluation éloignés des comportements naturels de l’enfant, ce que pallie l’AEPS/EIS. Ce dernier, un outil d’évaluation du développement de l’enfant, vise dans sa nouvelle édition l’introduction des domaines de la littératie et de la numératie. Les questions de recherche de la présente étude concernent les degrés d’accord interjuges entre deux évaluateurs pour chacun des deux domaines et pour chacun des buts qui les composent. L’échantillon est constitué de 32 enfants, évalués dans leur milieu de vie. Les résultats montrent un degré d’accord excellent pour la littératie et substantiel pour la numératie. Seul un but en littératie présente un degré d’accord faible. De même, seule une absence d’accord est notée pour un but de la numératie. En conclusion, les nouveaux domaines présentent des qualités psychométriques intéressantes sur le plan de la fidélité. Cette étude est un apport au processus d’élaboration des domaines de la littératie et de la numératie de l’AEPS/EIS. Néanmoins, la poursuite de la validation de l’ensemble de la nouvelle édition demeure incontournable.

Cet article est le premier de deux articles explorant les liens bidirectionnels entre le concept d’adaptation et celui de neurosciences. Nous verrons tout d’abord dans cet article que les neurosciences peuvent être perçues comme ambitieuses et toutes-puissantes oscillant entre un danger réductionniste et déshumanisant ou bien cristallisant certains fantasmes de maîtrise. Nous verrons ensuite que la société s’adapte aux neurosciences en intégrant certaines méthodologies et certaines découvertes dans des domaines très variés, au point que nous pouvons nous questionner sur la neurosociété de demain. Ensuite nous verrons que la méthodologie des neurosciences est elle-même fréquemment remise en question et nécessite que chacun en connaisse les limites sans s’en tenir aux seules promesses. Après cela, nous verrons que l’adaptation vue comme une promesse d’un but déterminé et fini peut s’avérer rassurante mais est surtout improbable.

L’étude vise d’abord à dresser un bilan quantitatif des changements stratiques, morphologiques et sémantiques, puis à identifier les domaines cognitifs les plus importants et les mécanismes de changement les plus productifs au sein de cet échantillon. La nomenclature est issue, après adaptation, des deux publications de référence d’Arnulf Stefenelli (1981 ; 1992) sur les vocabulaires français et latin à haute fréquence.

À travers différents projets, il nous décrit les différents axes de recherche du cirmmt, et sa structure en adaptation constante aux évolutions des domaines et des structures académiques. Dans un contexte foncièrement interdisciplinaire soutenu par cette mobilité et ce dynamisme, les projets évoqués nous entraînent vers les terrains des nouveaux instruments, de la recherche d’information musicale, de la cognition et de la perception, de la pédagogie et des pratiques musicales étendues.

Le PIDAQ (Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire) est un instrument qui a été mis au point pour évaluer l’impact des dysmorphoses orthodontiques sur la qualité de vie. L’objectif de cette étude était d’adapter en langue française le questionnaire PIDAQ. Secondairement, une évaluation de ses propriétés psychométriques et de sa validité a été mise en œuvre. Les recommandations de Guillemin, et al. (1993) ont servi de base dans cette perspective. En particulier, les quatre étapes suivantes sont rigoureusement suivies : étape préparatoire, réunion d’expert, rétro-traduction et harmonisation. La version en français obtenue à la fin du processus d’adaptation, que nous avons convenu de nommer QIPEO, est testée sur un échantillon de 42 sujets (33 femmes et 9 hommes) âgés de 24,60 ± 8,66 ans. Les résultats montrent une excellente fiabilité du PIDAQ avec une cohérence interne des items qui constituent chacun des domaines variant de 0,67 pour les « préoccupations esthétiques » à 0,87 pour l’« impact social ». La reproductibilité des réponses données par 14 patients à deux évaluations différentes séparées de 15 jours est bonne pour les quatre domaines avec un coefficient intra-classe allant de 0,72 pour l’« impact social » à 0,90 pour la « perception esthétique ». Cette étude révèle aussi que le PIDAQ a un certain degré de validité pour cette population, les scores étant, d’une part, associés de façon significative à la perception qu’ont les patients de l’alignement de leurs dents et, d’autre part, avec la composante de santé dentaire de l’IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). Une étude de validation sur un échantillon plus grand et plus variée de sujets issus d’une population française est recommandée ainsi qu’une analyse de sa réactivité aux changements (traitement, récidives, etc.).

Les forces armées françaises sont aujourd’hui probablement les plus performantes en Europe. Avec le Royaume-Uni, la France est actuellement la seule puissance européenne capable d’intervenir sur tout le spectre d’intensité des opérations – y compris nucléaire –, et dans tous les domaines – terrestre, naval, aérien, cyber et spatial. Toutefois, les armées françaises sont actuellement à la fin d’un cycle opérationnel caractérisé par trente ans « d’opérations extérieures », et doivent désormais se recentrer sur le haut du spectre des opérations. Cette adaptation, liée à l’évolution du contexte stratégique international marqué notamment par la fin de l’unipolarité américaine, contraint la France à hiérarchiser ses intérêts et théâtres d’engagement, avec des conséquences importantes pour les missions et le format des forces armées.

Le budget du 25 février 1992 a énoncé des modifications à la Loi de l'impôt sur le revenu qui représentent une adaptation au mode de vie actuel des citoyens du Canada. En effet, la définition du terme « conjoint » a été élargie afin d'englober les conjoints de fait en vue de mettre fin à une disparité fiscale existant entre les personnes mariées et celles qui vivent en union de fait. Dans le présent texte, l'auteur compare la notion de conjoint telle qu'on la connaissait avant le 1erjanvier 1993 à celle qui prévaut depuis cette date et il soulève aussi les difficultés d'application susceptibles d'être causées par les nouvelles dispositions. Par ailleurs, il est question des problèmes engendrés par la notion de conjoint notamment en matière de déductibilité des frais de garde d'enfants ainsi que des solutions apportées à cet égard par les nouvelles mesures de même que des lacunes qui subsisteraient. Enfin, l'auteur conclut que même si les nouvelles dispositions permettant un élargissement de la notion de conjoint constituent un pas dans la bonne direction, il faudrait s'attaquer au texte même de la législation et repenser le système afin de redéfinir des règles claires et plus objectives dans tous les domaines de la fiscalité familiale.

Introduction. La confiance est essentielle à la relation médecin-malade. Compte tenu de son impact sur la prise en charge des patients, et en l’absence d’outil validé en français pour pouvoir l’évaluer, il était justifié de traduire, d’adapter à la culture française et de valider une échelle anglo-saxonne existante. L’échelle de Wake Forest a été choisie car c’est une échelle de référence. Objectifs. Traduire et valider en français l’échelle de Wake Forest. Méthode. Pour la traduction et l’adaptation culturelle, les étapes ont été incluses : la préparation, la traduction de l’échelle en français, l’harmonisation des trois traductions par quatre traducteurs (première commission), la rétrotraduction, l’analyse de la rétrotraduction et l’harmonisation (deuxième commission), l’application du prétest, l’élaboration de la version définitive du test (troisième commission). La validation a été réalisée sur 100 patients consultant en cabinet de médecine générale : la qualité des items et l’a de Cronbach ont été analysés. Dans un second temps, l’analyse de la fidélité temporelle a été effectuée par la réalisation d’un test-retest. Résultats. Les difficultés rencontrées pour l’analyse et la traduction des différents items étaient hétérogènes et ont été résolues au cours des commissions. À la fin du processus et après relecture, la version finale de l’échelle de Wake Forest a été proposée. L’analyse de la qualité des items a été satisfaisante. Le coefficient a de Cronbach était à 0,89. Le test-retest était stable dans le temps. Conclusion. La traduction a été menée à bien. Aucun outil de mesure de la confiance n’avait encore été construit en France. La qualité de l’échelle produite était comparable aux traductions réalisées en Chine et aux Pays-Bas ainsi qu’à des travaux de traduction réalisés dans d’autres domaines. La procédure de traduction qui a été utilisée a été rigoureuse et a suivi de manière exhaustive les recommandations disponibles. Les traducteurs, même s’ils étaient bilingues, n’étaient pas des professionnels de la traduction. Ce travail permet de disposer, en France, d’un instrument pour évaluer la confiance des patients en leur médecin.

Les systèmes d'apprentissage automatique fonctionnent sous l'hypothèse que les conditions d'entraînement et de test ne changent pas. Néanmoins, cette hypothèse est rarement vérifiée en pratique. En conséquence, le système est entraîné avec des données qui ne sont plus représentatives des données sur lesquelles il sera testé : la mesure de probabilité des données évolue entre les périodes d'entraînement et de test. Ce scénario est connu dans la littérature sous le nom de décalage de distribution entre deux domaines : une source et une cible. Une généralisation évidente de ce problème considère que les données d'entraînement présentent elles-mêmes plusieurs décalages intrinsèques. On parle, donc, d'adaptation de domaine à sources multiples (MSDA). Dans ce contexte, le transport optimal est un outil de mathématique utile. En particulier, qui sert pour comparer et manipuler des mesures de probabilité. Cette thèse étudie les contributions du transport optimal à l'adaptation de domaines à sources multiples. Nous le faisons à travers des barycentres de Wasserstein, un objet qui définit une moyenne pondérée, dans l'espace des mesures de probabilité, des multiples domaines en MSDA. Basé sur ce concept, nous proposons : (i) une nouvelle notion de barycentre lorsque les mesures en question sont étiquetées, (ii) un nouveau problème d'apprentissage de dictionnaire sur des mesures de probabilité empiriques et (iii) de nouveaux outils pour l'adaptation de domaines via le transport optimal de modèles de mélanges Gaussiens. Nos méthodes améliorent les performances de l'adaptation de domaines par rapport aux méthodes existantes utilisant le transport optimal sur des benchmarks d'images et de diagnostic de défauts inter-domaines. Notre travail ouvre une perspective de recherche intéressante sur l'apprentissage de l'enveloppe barycentrique de mesures de probabilité<br>Machine learning systems work under the assumption that training and test conditions are uniform, i.e., they do not change. However, this hypothesis is seldom met in practice. Hence, the system is trained with data that is no longer representative of the data it will be tested on. This case is represented by a shift in the probability measure generating the data. This scenario is known in the literature as distributional shift between two domains: a source, and a target. A straightforward generalization of this problem is when training data itself exhibit shifts on its own. In this case, one consider Multi Source Domain Adaptation (MSDA). In this context, optimal transport is an useful field of mathematics. Especially, optimal transport serves as a toolbox, for comparing and manipulating probability measures. This thesis studies the contributions of optimal transport to multi-source domain adaptation. We do so through Wasserstein barycenters, an object that defines a weighted average, in the space of probability measures, for the multiple domains in MSDA. Based on this concept, we propose: (i) a novel notion of barycenter, when the measures at hand are equipped with labels, (ii) a novel dictionary learning problem over empirical probability measures and (iii) new tools for domain adaptation through the optimal transport of Gaussian mixture models. Through our methods, we are able to improve domain adaptation performance in comparison with previous optimal transport-based methods on image, and cross-domain fault diagnosis benchmarks. Our work opens an interesting research direction, on learning the barycentric hull of probability measures

Par contre, cette formule ne s’applique qu’aux domaines simplement connexes. Récemment, Darren Crowdy a obtenu une généralisation de cette formule pour les domaines multiplement connexes. Celle-ci envoie des domaines circulaires sur des domaines polygonaux. Ce mémoire vise à faire la démonstration de la formule développée par Crowdy. Pour ce faire, il faudra définir la fonction de Schottky–Klein ainsi que la fonction de Green modifiée. Il faudra aussi introduire les domaines canoniques.

Les méthodes d’apprentissage automatique qui reposent sur les Réseaux de Neurones (RNs) ont démontré des performances de prédiction qui s'approchent de plus en plus de la performance humaine dans plusieurs applications du Traitement Automatique de la Langue (TAL) qui bénéficient de la capacité des différentes architectures des RNs à généraliser à partir des régularités apprises à partir d'exemples d'apprentissage. Toutefois, ces modèles sont limités par leur dépendance aux données annotées. En effet, pour être performants, ces modèles neuronaux ont besoin de corpus annotés de taille importante. Par conséquent, uniquement les langues bien dotées peuvent bénéficier directement de l'avancée apportée par les RNs, comme par exemple les formes formelles des langues. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous proposons des méthodes d'apprentissage par transfert neuronal pour la construction d'outils de TAL pour les langues peu dotées en exploitant leurs similarités avec des langues bien dotées. Précisément, nous expérimentons nos approches pour le transfert à partir du domaine source des textes formels vers le domaine cible des textes informels (langue utilisée dans les réseaux sociaux). Tout au long de cette thèse nous proposons différentes contributions. Tout d'abord, nous proposons deux approches pour le transfert des connaissances encodées dans les représentations neuronales d'un modèle source, pré-entraîné sur les données annotées du domaine source, vers un modèle cible, adapté par la suite sur quelques exemples annotés du domaine cible. La première méthode transfère des représentations contextuelles pré-entraînées sur le domaine source. Tandis que la deuxième méthode utilise des poids pré-entraînés pour initialiser les paramètres du modèle cible. Ensuite, nous effectuons une série d'analyses pour repérer les limites des méthodes proposées ci-dessus. Nous constatons que, même si l'approche d'apprentissage par transfert proposée améliore les résultats du domaine cible, un transfert négatif « dissimulé » peut atténuer le gain final apporté par l'apprentissage par transfert. De plus, une analyse interprétative du modèle pré-entraîné, montre que les neurones pré-entraînés peuvent être biaisés par ce qu'ils ont appris du domaine source, et donc peuvent avoir des difficultés à apprendre des « patterns » spécifiques au domaine cible. Issu de notre analyse, nous proposons un nouveau schéma d'adaptation qui augmente le modèle cible avec des neurones normalisés, pondérés et initialisés aléatoirement qui permettent une meilleure adaptation au domaine cible tout en conservant les connaissances apprises du domaine source. Enfin, nous proposons une approche d’apprentissage par transfert qui permet de profiter des similarités entre différentes tâches, en plus des connaissances pré-apprises du domaine source<br>Recent approaches based on end-to-end deep neural networks have revolutionised Natural Language Processing (NLP), achieving remarkable results in several tasks and languages. Nevertheless, these approaches are limited with their "gluttony" in terms of annotated data, since they rely on a supervised training paradigm, i.e. training from scratch on large amounts of annotated data. Therefore, there is a wide gap between NLP technologies capabilities for high-resource languages compared to the long tail of low-resourced languages. Moreover, NLP researchers have focused much of their effort on training NLP models on the news domain, due to the availability of training data. However, many research works have highlighted that models trained on news fail to work efficiently on out-of-domain data, due to their lack of robustness against domain shifts. This thesis presents a study of transfer learning approaches, through which we propose different methods to take benefit from the pre-learned knowledge on the high-resourced domain to enhance the performance of neural NLP models in low-resourced settings. Precisely, we apply our approaches to transfer from the news domain to the social media domain. Indeed, despite the importance of its valuable content for a variety of applications (e.g. public security, health monitoring, or trends highlight), this domain is still poor in terms of annotated data. We present different contributions. First, we propose two methods to transfer the knowledge encoded in the neural representations of a source model pretrained on large labelled datasets from the source domain to the target model, further adapted by a fine-tuning on few annotated examples from the target domain. The first transfers contextualised supervisedly pretrained representations, while the second method transfers pretrained weights, used to initialise the target model's parameters. Second, we perform a series of analysis to spot the limits of the above-mentioned proposed methods. We find that even if the proposed transfer learning approach enhances the performance on social media domain, a hidden negative transfer may mitigate the final gain brought by transfer learning. In addition, an interpretive analysis of the pretrained model, show that pretrained neurons may be biased by what they have learned from the source domain, thus struggle with learning uncommon target-specific patterns. Third, stemming from our analysis, we propose a new adaptation scheme which augments the target model with normalised, weighted and randomly initialised neurons that beget a better adaptation while maintaining the valuable source knowledge. Finally, we propose a model, that in addition to the pre-learned knowledge from the high-resource source-domain, takes advantage of various supervised NLP tasks

Cette thèse s’intéresse à l’adaptation d’un classifieur statistique d’opinion au niveau du texte d’un domaine à un autre. Cependant, nous exprimons notre opinion différemment selon ce dont nous parlons. Un même mot peut ne pas désigner pas la même chose ou bien ne pas avoir la même connotation selon le thème de la discussion. Si ces mots ne sont pas détectés, ils induiront des erreurs de classification.Nous appelons donc marqueurs multi-polaires des mots ou bigrammes dont la présence indique une certaine polarité du texte entier, différente selon le domaine du texte. Cette thèse est consacrées à leur étude. Ces marqueurs sont détectés à l’aide d’un test du khi2 lorsque l’on dispose d’annotations au niveau du texte dans les deux domaines d’intérêt. Nous avons également proposé une méthode de détection semi-supervisé. Nous utilisons une collections de mots pivots auto-épurés afin d’assurer une polarité stable d’un domaine à un autre.Nous avons également vérifié la pertinence linguistique des mots sélectionnés en organisant une campagne d’annotation manuelle. Les mots ainsi validés comme multi-polaires peuvent être des éléments de contexte, des mots exprimant ou expliquant une opinion ou bien désignant l’objet sur lequel l’opinion est portée. Notre étude en contexte a également mis en lumière trois causes principale de changement de polarité : le changement de sens, le changement d’objet et le changement d’utilisation.Pour finir, nous avons étudié l’influence de la détection des marqueurs multi-polaires sur la classification de l’opinion au niveau du texte par des classifieurs automatiques dans trois cas distincts : adaptation d’un domaine source à un domaine cible, corpus multi-domaine, corpus en domaine ouvert. Les résultats de ces expériences montrent que plus le transfert initial est difficile, plus la prise en compte des marqueurs multi-polaires peut améliorer la classification, allant jusqu’à plus cinq points d’exactitude<br>In this thesis, we are studying the adaptation of a text level opinion classifier across domains. Howerver, people express their opinion in a different way depending on the subject of the conversation. The same word in two different domains can refer to different objects or have an other connotation. If these words are not detected, they will lead to classification errors.We call these words or bigrams « multi-polarity marquers ». Their presence in a text signals a polarity wich is different according to the domain of the text. Their study is the subject of this thesis. These marquers are detected using a khi2 test if labels exist in both targeted domains. We also propose a semi-supervised detection method for the case with labels in only one domain. We use a collection of auto-epurated pivot words in order to assure a stable polarity accross domains.We have also checked the linguistic interest of the selected words with a manual evaluation campaign. The validated words can be : a word of context, a word giving an opinion, a word explaining an opinion or a word wich refer to the evaluated object. Our study also show that the causes of the changing polarity are of three kinds : changing meaning, changing object or changing use.Finally, we have studyed the influence of multi-polarity marquers on opinion classification at text level in three different cases : adaptation of a source domain to a target domain, multi-domain corpora and open domain corpora. The results of our experiments show that the potential improvement is bigger when the initial transfer was difficult. In the favorable cases, we improve accurracy up to five points

Nous avons exploré la possibilité qu’une fraction du tissu conjonctif intramusculaire, le périmysium soit impliqué dans les mécanismes qui sont à l’origine des adaptations musculaires. Pour cela, nous avons montré dans le muscle squelettique Flexor carpi radialis de bœuf que le périmysium transmet latéralement les forces de la contraction musculaire depuis les fibres musculaires jusqu’aux tendons. D’autre part, nous avons montré que sa répartition spatiale correspond à la surface des fibres musculaires à la répartition des intégrines et à la présence des cellules satellites et dans les fibres musculaires à la répartition des noyaux, des mitochondries subsarcolemmales et des myosines. We concluded that the perimysium-myofiber relationship reflects the existence of a mechanosensor system explaining short and long term muscle adaptations. La capacité du virus de la grippe aviaire à traverser la barrière des espèces et à devenir fortement pathogène chez les mammifères est un problème majeur de santé publique. Chez les oiseaux, la réplication a lieu dans l'intestin, à 4C, tandis que chez les humains elle a lieu dans l'appareil respiratoire, plus froid, à 33C. Il a été montré que l'adaptation à la température du virus de la grippe a lieu par de nombreuses mutations de la polymérase virale, notamment dans le domaine 627-NLS situé en C-terminal de la protéine PB2. Ce domaine est impliqué dans l'adaptation à l'hôte et interagit avec la protéine de l'hôte, importine alpha, étant donc indispensable pour l'entrée de la polymérase virale dans le noyau de la cellule [Tarendeau et al., 2008]. Les structures cristallographiques du 627-NLS et du complexe importine alpha/NLS existent. Cependant, lors de la superposition de ces structures via leur domaine NLS commun, un important choc stérique entre le domaine 627 et l'importine alpha devient évident. Ceci indique qu'une autre conformation du 627-NLS est requise pour l'interaction avec l'importine alpha [Boivin and Hart, 2011]. Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné les bases moléculaires de l'adaptation inter-espèces du virus à travers l'étude de la structure et de la dynamique du 627-NLS aviaire et humain. Nous avons identifié deux conformations du 627-NLS en échange lent (10-100 s-1), correspondant apparemment à une conformation ouverte et une conformation fermée des deux domaines. Nous proposons que la conformation ouverte du 627-NLS est la seule conformation compatible avec l'interaction avec l'importine alpha, et que l'équilibre entre conformation ouverte et fermée pourrait jouer le rôle de thermostat moléculaire, contrôlant l'efficacité de la réplication virale chez différents hôtes. La cinétique et la dynamique de ce comportement conformationnel important ainsi que de l'interaction entre le 627-NLS et l'importine alpha ont été caractérisées par résonance magnétique nucléaire (déplacements chimique, augmentation paramagnétique de la relaxation, relaxation de spin, transfert de saturation par l'échange chimique), combinée à la diffusion des rayons X et des neutrons aux petits angles ainsi qu'au transfert d'énergie par résonance de type Förster. Aussi, nous avons déterminé les affinités d'une série de mutants évolutifs du 627-NLS pour l'importine alpha et du 627-NLS aviaire ou humain pour différents isoformes de l'importine alpha, montrant que les affinités observées sont cohérentes avec les préférences d'interactions vues in vivo<br>The ability of avian influenza viruses to cross the species barrier and become dangerously pathogenic to mammalian hosts represents a major threat for human health. In birds the viral replication is carried out in the intestine at 40°C, while in humans it occurs in the cooler respiratory tract at 33°C. It has been shown that temperature adaption of the influenza virus occurs through numerous mutations in the viral polymerase, in particular in the C-terminal domain 627-NLS of the PB2 protein. This domain has already been shown to participate in host adaptation and is involved in importin alpha binding and therefore is required for entry of the viral polymerase into the nucleus [Tarendeau et al., 2008]. Crystallographic structures are available for 627-NLS and the complex importin alpha/NLS, however, a steric clash between importin alpha and the 627 domain becomes apparent when superimposing the NLS domain of the two structures, indicating that another conformation of 627-NLS is required for binding to importin alpha [Boivin and Hart, 2011]. Here we investigate the molecular basis of inter-species adaptation by studying the structure and dynamics of human and avian 627-NLS. We have identified two conformations of 627-NLS in slow exchange (10-100 s-1), corresponding to an apparently open and closed conformation of the two domains. We show that the equilibrium between closed and open conformations is strongly temperature dependent. We propose that the open conformation of 627-NLS is the only conformation compatible with binding to importin alpha and that the equilibrium between closed and open conformations may play a role as a molecular thermostat, controlling the efficiency of viral replication in the different species. The kinetics and domain dynamics of this important conformational behaviour and of the interaction between 627-NLS and importin alpha have been characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts, paramagnetic relaxation enhancement, spin relaxation and chemical exchange saturation transfer, in combination with X-ray and neutron small angle scattering and Förster resonance energy transfer. Also, we have determined the affinities of various evolutionnary mutants of 627-NLS to importin alpha and of avian and human 627-NLS to different isoforms of importin alpha, showing that the observed affinities are coherent with the preferred interactions seen in vivo

L’opéron métabolique frz code les sous-unités d’un transporteur PTS de la sous-famille du fructose, un activateur transcriptionnel des systèmes PTS de la famille MgA (FrzR), deux cétoses-1,6-bisphosphate aldolases de type II, une kinase spécifique des sucres (famille ROK) et une protéine de la superfamille des cupines. Il est fortement associé aux souches d’Escherichia coli à virulence extra-intestinale. Nous avons montré qu’il procure un avantage aux bactéries lors de conditions de stress (peu d’oxygène, phase stationnaire de croissance, croissance dans le sérum et l’intestin) et qu’il est impliqué dans l’adhérence et l’internalisation de la bactérie dans diverses cellules eucaryotes, en régulant l’expression des fimbriae de type 1. L’activateur (FrzR) est impliqué dans ces phénotypes. A l’aide de microarrays, une série de gènes sous la dépendance du système Frz ont été identifiés. Nos données suggèrent que frz code un senseur de l’environnement permettant à E. coli de s’adapter à un environnement fluctuant en régulant notamment certains gènes de virulence et d’adaptation à l’hôte. It is highly associated with Extra-intestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli strains. We proved that frz promotes bacterial fitness under stressful conditions, (such as oxygen restriction, late stationary phase of growth or growth in serum or in the intestinal tract). Furthermore, we showed that frz is involved in adherence to and internalization of E. coli in several eukaryotic cells by regulating the expression of type 1 fimbriae. The FrzR activator is involved in these phenotypes. Microarrays, experiments allowed the identification of several genes under the dependence of the frz system. Our data suggest that frz codes for a sensor of the environment allowing E. coli to adapt to a fluctuating environment by regulating some virulence and host adaptation genes. Nous présentons notre travail sur la sécurité des télésièges par des techniques d'apprentissage profond dans le cadre du projet Mivao, qui vise à développer un système de vision par ordinateur qui acquiert des images de la station d'embarquement du télésiège, analyse les éléments essentiels et détecte les situations dangereuses. Dans ce scénario, nous avons différents télésièges répartis sur différentes stations de ski, avec une grande diversité de conditions d'acquisition et de géométries . Lorsque le système est installé pour un nouveau télésiège, l'objectif est d'effectuer une analyse de scène précise et fiable, étant donné le manque de données labellisées sur ce télésiège.Dans ce contexte, nous nous concentrons principalement sur le garde-corps du télésiège et proposons de classer chaque image en deux catégories, selon que le garde-corps est fermé ou ouvert. Il s'agit donc d'un problème de classification des images avec trois spécificités : (i) la catégorie d'image dépend d'un petit détail dans un fond encombré, (ii) les annotations manuelles ne sont pas faciles à obtenir, (iii) un classificateur formé sur certains télésièges devrait donner de bons résultats sur un nouveau. Pour guider le classificateur vers les zones importantes des images, nous avons proposé deux solutions : la détection d'objets et les réseaux siamois.Nos solutions sont motivées par la nécessité de minimiser les efforts d'annotation humaine tout en améliorant la précision du problème de la sécurité des télésièges. Cependant, ces contributions ne sont pas nécessairement limitées à ce contexte spécifique, et elles peuvent être appliquées à d'autres problèmes dans un contexte multi-domaine<br>This thesis presents our work on chairlift safety using deep learning techniques as part of the Mivao project, which aims to develop a computer vision system that acquires images of the chairlift boarding station, analyzes the crucial elements, and detects dangerous situations. In this scenario, we have different chairlifts spread over different ski resorts, with a high diversity of acquisition conditions and geometries; thus, each chairlift is considered a domain. When the system is installed for a new chairlift, the objective is to perform an accurate and reliable scene analysis, given the lack of labeled data on this new domain (chairlift).In this context, we mainly concentrate on the chairlift safety bar and propose to classify each image into two categories, depending on whether the safety bar is closed (safe) or open (unsafe). Thus, it is an image classification problem with three specific features: (i) the image category depends on a small detail (the safety bar) in a cluttered background, (ii) manual annotations are not easy to obtain, (iii) a classifier trained on some chairlifts should provide good results on a new one (generalization). To guide the classifier towards the important regions of the images, we have proposed two solutions: object detection and Siamese networks. Furthermore, we analyzed the generalization property of these two approaches. Our solutions are motivated by the need to minimize human annotation efforts while improving the accuracy of the chairlift safety problem. However, these contributions are not necessarily limited to this specific application context, and they may be applied to other problems in a multi-domain context

Multi-source domain adaptation has attracted great attention in machine learning community. Most of these methods focus on weighting the predictions produced by the adaptation networks of different domains. Thus the domain shifts between certain of domains and target domain are not effectively relieved, resulting in that these domains are not fully exploited and even may have a negative influence on multi-source domain adaptation task. To address such challenge, we propose a multi-source domain adaptation method to gradually improve the adaptation ability of each source domain by producing more high-confident pseudo-labels with self-paced learning for conditional distribution alignment. The proposed method first trains several separate domain branch networks with single domains and an ensemble branch network with all domains. Then we obtain some high-confident pseudo-labels with the branch networks and learn the branch specific pseudo-labels with self-paced learning. Each branch network reduces the domain gap by aligning the conditional distribution with its branch specific pseudo-labels and the pseudo-labels provided by all branch networks. Experiments on Office31, Office-Home and DomainNet show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Domain adaptation is critical for learning transferable features that effectively reduce the distribution difference among domains. In the era of big data, the availability of large-scale labeled datasets motivates partial domain adaptation (PDA) which deals with adaptation from large source domains to small target domains with less number of classes. In the PDA setting, it is crucial to transfer relevant source samples and eliminate irrelevant ones to mitigate negative transfer. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based source data selector for PDA, which is capable of eliminating less relevant source samples automatically to boost existing adaptation methods. It determines to either keep or discard the source instances based on their feature representations so that more effective knowledge transfer across domains can be achieved via filtering out irrelevant samples. As a general module, the proposed DRL-based data selector can be integrated into any existing domain adaptation or partial domain adaptation models. Extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DRL-based data selector which leads to state-of-the-art performance for various PDA tasks.

Abstract Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) provides a promising methodology for solving many complex engineering design problems. CBR is based on the idea that past problem-solving experiences can be reused and learned from in solving new problems. This paper presents an overview of a CBR design system to assist human engineers in performing mechanical bearing design. It retrieves previously designed cases from a case-base and uses adaptation techniques to adapt them to satisfy the current problem requirements. Our approach combines parametric adaptations and constraint satisfaction adaptations. The technique of parametric adaptation considers not only parameter substitution, but also the interrelationships between the problem definition and its solution. The technique of constraint satisfaction adaptation provides a method to globally check the design requirements to assess case adaptability. Currently, our system has been tested in the rolling bearing domain.

Semi-supervised domain adaptation (SSDA) aims to apply knowledge learned from a fully labeled source domain to a scarcely labeled target domain. In this paper, we propose a Multi-level Consistency Learning (MCL) framework for SSDA. Specifically, our MCL regularizes the consistency of different views of target domain samples at three levels: (i) at inter-domain level, we robustly and accurately align the source and target domains using a prototype-based optimal transport method that utilizes the pros and cons of different views of target samples; (ii) at intra-domain level, we facilitate the learning of both discriminative and compact target feature representations by proposing a novel class-wise contrastive clustering loss; (iii) at sample level, we follow standard practice and improve the prediction accuracy by conducting a consistency-based self-training. Empirically, we verified the effectiveness of our MCL framework on three popular SSDA benchmarks, i.e., VisDA2017, DomainNet, and Office-Home datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that our MCL framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Domain adaptation is an important technique to alleviate performance degradation caused by domain shift, e.g., when training and test data come from different domains. Most existing deep adaptation methods focus on reducing domain shift by matching marginal feature distributions through deep transformations on the input features, due to the unavailability of target domain labels. We show that domain shift may still exist via label distribution shift at the classifier, thus deteriorating model performances. To alleviate this issue, we propose an approximate joint distribution matching scheme by exploiting prediction uncertainty. Specifically, we use a Bayesian neural network to quantify prediction uncertainty of a classifier. By imposing distribution matching on both features and labels (via uncertainty), label distribution mismatching in source and target data is effectively alleviated, encouraging the classifier to produce consistent predictions across domains. We also propose a few techniques to improve our method by adaptively reweighting domain adaptation loss to achieve nontrivial distribution matching and stable training. Comparisons with state of the art unsupervised domain adaptation methods on three popular benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our approach, especially on the effectiveness of alleviating negative transfer.

In general, deep neural networks trained on a given labeled dataset are expected to produce equivalent results when tested on a new unlabeled dataset. However, data are generally collected by different devices or under varying conditions and thus they often are not part of a same domain, yielding poor results. This is due to the domain shift between data distributions and has been the goal of a research area known as unsupervised domain adaptation. Many prior works have been designed to transfer knowledge between two domains: one source to one target. Since data may be taken from different sources and with different distributions, multi-source domain adaptation has received increasing attention. This paper presents the Multi-Source DomaIn Alignment Layers (MS-DIAL), which reduce the domain shift between multiple sources and a given target by embedding domain alignment layers in any given network. Except for the embedded layers, all the other network parameters are shared among all domains, saving processing time and memory usage. Experiments were performed on digit and object recognition tasks with five public datasets widely used to evaluate domain adaptation methods. Results show that the proposed method is promising and outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

Canada 1 Water is a 3-year governmental multi-department-private-sector-academic collaboration to model the groundwater-surface-water of Canada coupled with historic climate and climate scenario input. To address this challenge continental Canada has been allocated to one of 6 large watershed basins of approximately two million km2. The model domains are based on natural watershed boundaries and include approximately 1 million km2 of the United States. In year one (2020-2021) data assembly and validation of some 20 datasets (layers) is the focus of work along with conceptual model development. To support analysis of the entire water balance the modelling framework consists of three distinct components and modelling software. Land Surface modelling with the Community Land Model will support information needed for both the regional climate modelling using the Weather Research &amp; Forecasting model (WRF), and input to HydroGeoSphere for groundwater-surface-water modelling. The inclusion of the transboundary watersheds will provide a first time assessment of water resources in this critical international domain. Modelling is also being integrated with Remote Sensing datasets, notably the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). GRACE supports regional scale watershed analysis of total water flux. GRACE along with terrestrial time-series data will serve provide validation datasets for model results to ensure that the final project outputs are representative and reliable. The project has an active engagement and collaborative effort underway to try and maximize the long-term benefit of the framework. Much of the supporting model datasets will be published under open access licence to support broad usage and integration.

Original Objectives: 1. Purify and biochemically characterize RB60 orthologs in higher plant chloroplasts; 2. Clone the gene(s) encoding plant RB60 orthologs and determine their structure and expression; 3. Manipulate the expression of RB60; 4. Assay the effects of altered RB60 expression on thylakoid biogenesis and photosynthetic function in plants exposed to different light conditions. In addition, we also examined the gene structure and expression of RB60 orthologs in the non-vascular plant, Physcomitrella patens and cloned the poly(A)-binding protein orthologue (43 kDa RB47-like protein). This protein is believed to a partner that interacts with RB60 to bind to the psbA5' UTR. Thus, to obtain a comprehensive view of RB60 function requires analysis of its biochemical partners such as RB43. Background & Achievements: High levels of sunlight reduce photosynthesis in plants by damaging the photo system II reaction center (PSII) subunits, such as D1 (encoded by the chloroplast tpsbAgene). When the rate of D1 synthesis is less than the rate of photo damage, photo inhibition occurs and plant growth is decreased. Plants use light-activated translation and enhanced psbAmRNA stability to maintain D1 synthesis and replace the photo damaged 01. Despite the importance to photosynthetic capacity, these mechanisms are poorly understood in plants. One intriguing model derived from the algal chloroplast system, Chlamydomonas, implicates the role of three proteins (RB60, RB47, RB38) that bind to the psbAmRNA 5' untranslated leader (5' UTR) in the light to activate translation or enhance mRNA stability. RB60 is the key enzyme, protein D1sulfide isomerase (Pill), that regulates the psbA-RN :Binding proteins (RB's) by way of light-mediated redox potentials generated by the photosystems. However, proteins with these functions have not been described from higher plants. We provided compelling evidence for the existence of RB60, RB47 and RB38 orthologs in the vascular plant, Arabidopsis. Using gel mobility shift, Rnase protection and UV-crosslinking assays, we have shown that a dithiol redox mechanism which resembles a Pill (RB60) activity regulates the interaction of 43- and 30-kDa proteins with a thermolabile stem-loop in the 5' UTR of the psbAmRNA from Arabidopsis. We discovered, in Arabidopsis, the PD1 gene family consists of II members that differ in polypeptide length from 361 to 566 amino acids, presence of signal peptides, KDEL motifs, and the number and positions of thioredoxin domains. PD1's catalyze the reversible formation an disomerization of disulfide bonds necessary for the proper folding, assembly, activity, and secretion of numerous enzymes and structural proteins. PD1's have also evolved novel cellular redox functions, as single enzymes and as subunits of protein complexes in organelles. We provide evidence that at least one Pill is localized to the chloroplast. We have used PDI-specific polyclonal and monoclonal antisera to characterize the PD1 (55 kDa) in the chloroplast that is unevenly distributed between the stroma and pellet (containing membranes, DNA, polysomes, starch), being three-fold more abundant in the pellet phase. PD1-55 levels increase with light intensity and it assembles into a high molecular weight complex of ~230 kDa as determined on native blue gels. In vitro translation of all 11 different Pill's followed by microsomal membrane processing reactions were used to differentiate among PD1's localized in the endoplasmic reticulum or other organelles. These results will provide.1e insights into redox regulatory mechanisms involved in adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus to light stress. Elucidating the genetic mechanisms and factors regulating chloroplast photosynthetic genes is important for developing strategies to improve photosynthetic efficiency, crop productivity and adaptation to high light environments.

Since the introduction of COVID-19 in early 2020, COVID-19 stigma has persisted on social media. Stigma, a social process where individuals or groups are labeled, stereotyped, and separated, can result in misinformation, discrimination, and violence. The body of research on COVID-19 stigma is growing, but addressing stigma on social media remains challenging because of the enormous volume and diversity of rapidly changing content. This three-part methodology offers a standardized approach for generating (1) a relevant and manageable social media sample for stigma identification and research, (2) a categorization process to organize the sample, and (3) a systematic coding method for classifying stigma within the sample. An application of the methodology generated a curated sample of 138,998 posts from Twitter and Reddit, organized according to key stigma domain, key terms, frequency of terms, and hashtag occurrence. A subset of 711 posts were selected for the content analysis and analyzed based on the key stigma domains, distinguishing between intentional and unintentional stigma. This methodology has the potential to facilitate comprehensive social media stigma research through simplified sample generation and stigma identification processes and offers the possibility of adaptation to address other types of social media stigma, beyond COVID-19.

Demography studies the characteristics of populations. One such characteristic is well-being: this was the subject of the 2019 Wittgenstein Conference. Here, I discuss how objective well-being domains can be summarised to produce an overall well-being score, and how taking self-reported (subjective) well-being into account may help in this effort. But given that there is more than one type of subjective well-being score, we would want to know which one is “best”. We would also need to decide whose well-being counts, or counts more than that of others. Finally, I briefly mention the potential role of adaptation and social comparisons in the calculation of societal well-being.

Context-aware systems use data about their environment for adaptation at runtime, e.g., for optimization of power consumption or user experience. Ontology-based data access (OBDA) can be used to support the interpretation of the usually large amounts of data. OBDA augments query answering in databases by dropping the closed-world assumption (i.e., the data is not assumed to be complete any more) and by including domain knowledge provided by an ontology. We focus on a recently proposed temporalized query language that allows to combine conjunctive queries with the operators of the well-known propositional temporal logic LTL. In particular, we investigate temporalized OBDA w.r.t. ontologies in the DL EL, which allows for efficient reasoning and has been successfully applied in practice. We study both data and combined complexity of the query entailment problem.

We have identified three sets of climate-related security and development risks for Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. These include: 1. risks related to the decreasing natural resources and in particular water, 2. risks for the loss of (rural) livelihoods and rising inequalities, and 3. risks related to the unintended (negative) consequences of incoherent (climate change) policies. In this paper, we apply the concept of ‘cascading climate risks’ to explain how climate change has spillover effects across different sectors and policy domains. We have identified three sets of climate-related security and development risks for Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. These include: 1. risks related to the decreasing natural resources and in particular water, 2. risks for the loss of (rural) livelihoods and rising inequalities, and 3. risks related to the unintended (negative) consequences of incoherent (climate change) policies. In a context of existing socio-political and economic grievances, the pressures caused by global warming, alongside current weaknesses in governance structures and the absence of effective regional cooperation, can potentially lead to further fractures in the already fragile social contract between governments and citizens in North Africa. The cascading risks and challenges that North African governments and citizens face due to the climate emergency require the attention from European policymakers, given the strong trade, social and financial relations and ties between North Africa and Europe. Cascading climate risks mean that adaptation strategies will have an impact both within and outside Europe and North Africa. Hence, there will be the need to ensure policy coherence between environmental, trade and socio-economic concerns and a much needed, long-term and inherently political effort to tackle climate change in the next decades.

The UK government are committed to bringing forward legislation to allow the safe and secure deployment of self-driving vehicles. As part of the CAVPASS programme, TRL was commissioned to propose approaches to vehicle classification, and suitable technical requirements for aspects not related to the Automated Driving System (ADS). These included crashworthiness, occupant protection, protection of vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), and the lighting, braking and steering systems. The focus of this study was on Low-Speed Automated Vehicles (LSAVs). It involved selection and adaptation of existing pre- and post-deployment regulation to enable it to be applied to LSAVs. A main part was the adaptation of the technical regulations for M- and N-category vehicles, laid down in Great Britain’s Road Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020 No. 818), which implements retained Regulation (EU) 2018/858. The study proposed the introduction of two new vehicle categories (for LSAVs with and without occupants, respectively) to allow approval of designs not compatible with the M- and N-category definitions, such as passenger shuttles with six seats and space for standing passengers, or goods vehicles without any seats. Technical clarifications for regulations were developed relating to references to the driver or driver’s seat, controls, warnings and tell-tales and relating to bi-directional vehicles in general. The study further found that a general permission to carry standing passengers in light vehicles could present unreasonable risks to occupants in braking maneuvers or collisions, but that it could be safe in some Operational Design Domains (ODDs). A concept was proposed which offers manufacturers a choice between two Crashworthiness Approval Levels (CALs). The less demanding CAL allows standing passengers but restricts the subsequent ODD of the vehicles. In summary, the study proposed a novel approach to link approval regulations to the vehicle’s ODD and a set of technical requirements for non-ADS-related aspects of passenger- and goods-carrying LSAVs, which could help enable the approval of new vehicle concepts.
