Abstract:
This thesis explores some of the issues involved in movement praxis in actor training, contextualising itself within the QUT Academy of the Arts in Brisbane and arts research in Australian Universities. To elucidate these issues the researcher applies the epistemology of Humberto Maturana's constitutive ontology (the philosophical underpinnings of the biology of cognition) in multiple sites of performance theory and practice, with particular reference to the movement learning of actors. The research process has focused on publishing articles and a monograph for different groups of observers of the phenomenon under study: for Feldenkrais Practitioners, actor and drama educators, and researchers in performance studies. These articles, which are presented in a modified form in the thesis, develop the conceptual framework of the thesis; identify issues in movement training for performance, explore these issues and track movement training to performance. Insights garnered are then applied in the researcher's practice as director of The Rivers of China by Alma De Groen. Because the researcher occupies different sites, such as that of actor in training, of director, of actor educator and Feldenkrais Practitioner, the research is polysituational and results in a heteroglossic text. This text coheres around the central proposition that live performance can be constituted in terms of the particular dynamic of human interrelationship involved in the contract to play, and that there will be more coherence in the movement preparation of actors for live performance if that project is viewed in terms of the dynamics of this interrelationship rather than from mechanical or instrumental theories of the moving body.

Abstract:
This DPhil thesis explores judicial activism in economic telecommunications regulation. It enquires into what factors explain its occurrence. Two debates in different strands of literature - and gaps in them - inspire the research. A first one is that various theories attempt to explain judicial activism, but no general agreement can be found on what factors actually have key explanatory power. The second gap is that the literature on regulation usually considers judicial actors as having a role in the enforcement or accountability stages of the regulatory process but largely ignore the role that they could have in the development of regulation. Empirically, I analyse judicial activism in relation to economic telecommunications regulation through an exploratory comparative study. The two countries, Chile and the UK, are chosen because they have similarities and differences that made them interesting for a comparative project, such as having different legal systems (common and continental law) and having a different political history but similar approaches to regulating telecommunications (privatisation and liberalisation). Through a critical analysis of interviews and of final decisions made by judicial actors in both countries, I explore whether the factors the relevant literature argues explain judicial activism actually do explain judicial activism in the two case studies, whether other factors not found in the literature are important in explaining judicial activism, and - most importantly - how these factors interact. Through the analysis based on the case studies I reach three main conclusions. First, that judicial activism is a jurisdiction specific phenomenon and different factors are found to explain it in each case. Second, the different factors that explain judicial activism - I argue - play different roles. Some are argued to act as enabling factors of judicial activism while others explain judicial activism in an immediate manner, which I call direct drivers. Finally, I argue that the findings of this thesis contribute to debates in different strands of literature, such as legal theory, and specifically descriptive accounts of adjudication.

Abstract:
This dissertation explored memory conformity effects on people who interacted with a confederate and of bystanders to that interaction. Two studies were carried out. Study 1 was conducted in the field. A male confederate approached a group of people at the beach and had a brief interaction. About a minute later a research assistant approached the group and administered a target-absent lineup to each person in the group. Analyses revealed that memory conformity occurred during the lineup task. Bystanders were twice as likely to conform as those who interacted with the confederate. Study 2 was carried out in a laboratory under controlled conditions. Participants were exposed to two events during their time in the laboratory. In one event, participants were shown a brief video with no determinate roles assigned. In the other event participants were randomly assigned to interact with a confederate (actor condition) or to witness that interaction (bystander condition). Participants were given memory tests on both events to understand the effects of participant role (actor vs. bystander) on memory conformity. Participants answered second to all questions, following a confederate acting as a participant, who disseminated misinformation on critical questions. Analyses revealed no significant differences in memory conformity between actors and bystanders during the movie memory task. However, differences were found for the interaction memory task such that bystanders conformed more than actors on two of four critical questions. Bystanders also conformed more than actors during a lineup identification task. The results of these studies suggest that the role a person plays in an interaction affects how susceptible they are to information from a co-witness. Theoretical and applied implications are discussed. First, the results are explained through the use of two models of memory. Second, recommendations are made for forensic investigators.

Abstract:
Probabilistic algorithms offer powerful possibilities as for solving motion planning problems for complex robots in arbitrary environments. However, the quality of obtained solution paths is questionable. This thesis presents a tool to optimize these paths and improve their quality. The method is based on constrained numerical optimization and on collision checking to reduce the path length while avoiding collisions. The modularity of probabilistic methods also inspired us to design a motion generation algorithm for jumping characters. This algorithm is described by three steps of motion planning, from the trajectory of the character's center to the wholebody motion. Each step benefits from the rigor of motion planning to avoid collisions and to constraint the path. We proposed physics-inspired constraints to increase the plausibility of motions, such as slipping avoidance, velocity limitation and contact maintaining. The thesis works have been implemented in the software `Humanoid Path Planner' and the graphical renderings have been done with Blender

Abstract:

In the Bamileke chiefdoms, the patrimonialization has been translated for severaldecades by the opening of museums. They have the particularity of preserving collectionsfrom the local communities who are the holders. Museum pieces are regularly taken out to be used in social life. This staging of heritage involves at least two groups of actors: on the one hand, the royal servants in charge of customary management, and on the other, the employees of the museum institutions. The ambivalent status of the objects raises questions about the relevance of conservation choices, insofar as they are modelled on the Western model. If it is accepted that the perception of heritage varies from one culture to another, it is also conceivable that the modes of preservation are plural. Based on the study of situated projects, the thesis explores alternative management and preservation approaches that bring together community knowledge and museum management standards. The proposed solutions take intoaccount local realities, chiefdoms' expectations and the types of objects to be preserved. This research is based on the hypothesis that any museum enterprise takes on meaning according to the cultural context and is necessarily part of a political action. The thesis defends the absence of a universal museography and shows that the preservation and valorisation of heritage depend largely on the society in which they are embedded

Abstract:
Abstract Information and communication technology are among the fastest growing industry sectors globally. One enabler for fast grow is created standards, which enables compatibility between technologies. This dissertation aims to create new knowledge concerning how standardization affects businesses that develop and sell technologies and technology-based products and services. More precisely this study focuses on the wireless telecommunication, which needs standards to function globally. This globalization and standardization development sets requirements for companies and organizations in the business; they are expected to be flexible, innovative, efficient, international, well resourced and cooperative. In order to achieve this on a global scale multiple actors – such as manufacturers, operators and developers – need to negotiate with a number of regional standardization bodies. The standardization environment is under constant change; however, standards as such should remain stable. Understanding standardization processes has become important because new technologies, new forms of business organizations, trade issues and new institutions are emerging. All actors' in the standardization process should more thoroughly understand their role in the process, and recognize the important relations between the stages. From the actors' point of view the most beneficial issue in the wireless standardization process are networking and legitimacy of the process. In this research we are interested in researching empirically how actors' can possibly benefit from standardization processes in their businesses. As actors' we regard as manufacturers, operators, regulators, standardization organizations and SMEs. It is important to identify key factors/inhibitors that shape the standardization process from the actors' point of view. The theoretical framework of this study is built on the institutional theory. This theory provides a perspective as to how the actors can assimilate and act as part of the standardization environment. The broad reach of the institutional perspective is its major strength, making it potentially relevant to all levels of analyzis and all time spans, from micro-level interactions to large-scale changes in nation-states. Standardization creates opportunities for actors such as market and technology insights, internationalizing, and networking. The a priori dynamic process model developed shows the complexity and length of the wireless standardization process. From the process point of view the important points are the openness of the process, networking, cooperation, technological points and changes in the process. The new points which arose from the material include IPR issues, research, open atmosphere, globalization, licensing issues, flexible working procedure and interpretation of standards and document management. The empirical data of this study is derived by interviews. The interviews were carried out during autumn 1998, 2000 and winter 2004. 35 experts were interviewed from different bodies involved in 3rd generation wireless standardization and software companies.

Abstract:
A number of international humanitarian organizations focus on human development and aim to improve the situation of children. In many developing countries, states have not been able to fulfill the educational or basic needs of its children. To fill this void, international actors have stepped in to help with human development. This thesis focuses on answering the question: How are norms diffused to local communities? Looking at the implementation of human development norms, this paper examines the norms-based actions that NGOs take to maximize the development potential of children. Programs aimed at increasing basic education as well as fighting child labor are addressed. When exploring the norm socialization process NGOs use to promote programs in education and child labor, it is clear that a different process is present than is suggested by existing literature. This is due to the locale where norms are implemented: local communities.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to examine certain potential problems in the field of actor training, and to explore and devise means of addressing these problems. The fundamental problem addressed notes that certain forms of training, specifically training with the primary goal of teaching executive functions or skills, can lead to the creation of undifferentiated, compulsive behaviours in the student. The thesis notes that some skills-led approaches to actor training might not provide the actor with a differentiated understanding of the functional uses for the skills that they teach, or the teacher's justification for teaching such skills. In such approaches the actor is not free to understand and value his/her skills in relation to his/her own needs as an actor. Through analysing the work of the educational philosopher John Dewey, as well as paradigms of human learning presented by Ken Wilber, Lawrence Kohlberg and Abraham Maslow, the thesis notes that in order to avoid problems associated with teaching methods that forge compulsive behaviours, a successful actor-training must take into account the transformative effects trainings have on the structure of the actor's self. In order to facilitate training as an integrated, transformative process of self development the thesis utilises Ken Wilber's Integral Four Quadrant system of analysis as a means to study the fields in which an actor can develop his/her self, before examining an approach to transformative actor-training that focuses on the question of how the actor can embody his/her presence in the model of theatre as a communicative encounter (notably analysed by Victor Turner). The thesis makes reference to a number of educational processes that facilitate the learning of `presence' as an integrated process of self-development, but specifically focuses on the teaching and learning of mindfulness meditation, the Feldenkrais Method, and the martial art of Aikido.

Abstract:
This thesis examines an intermittent uncanniness that emerges in cultural responses to new image technologies, most recently in some impressions of the digital actor. The history of image technologies is punctuated by moments of fleeting strangeness: from Maxim Gorky's reading of the cinematographic image in terms of 'cursed grey shadows', to recent renderings of the computer-generated cast of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within as silicon-skinned mannequins. It is not merely the image's unfamiliar and new aesthetics that render it uncanny. Rather, the image is received within a cultural framework where its perceived strangeness speaks allegorically of what it means to be human at that historical moment. In various ways Walter Benjamin, Anson Rabinbach and N. Katherine Hayles have claimed that the notion and the experience of 'being human' is continuously transformed through processes related to different stages of modernity including rational thought, industrialisation, urbanisation, media and technology. In elaborating this argument, each of the four chapters is organized around the elucidation of a particular motif: 'dummy', 'siren', 'doppelg??nger' and 'resurrection'. These motifs circulate through discourses on different categories of digital actor, from those conceived without physical referents to those that are created as digital likenesses of living or dead celebrities. These cultural responses suggest that even while writers on the digital actor are speculating about the future, they are engaging with ideas about life, death and identity that are very old and very ambivalent.

Abstract:
This research consisted on revealing the main role of the rivers of the Rio Branco and Colorado Hydrographic basin (BHIRC, in Portuguese) on its landscape transformation, by applying diverse techniques and multidisciplinary science. Environmental History, as Geography and its subareas, made possible the scope that emerges from the necessity of integrating –in space and time- natural resources and hydrographic actors, so as to explore other possible ways of hearing a river’s history. Under this research model, the main objective is to analyze the role of environmental history of the rivers, as an enables of participative and inclusive management of the Amazonian water, through the case study of the water management unit that is in process of being implanted - Rio Branco and Colorado Hydrographic Basin – at Rondônia, Brazil. The research route was made through the comprehension of the metabolic processes of appropriation, configuring a new nature; the analysis of the river’s evolution were identified by the memory of its actors, and also it was discussed the possibility of the water being a transient witness, this way identifying the vulnerability of the pattern of chemical, physical and bacteriological parameters, in correlation to the Brazilian juridical system; the response to the appropriation of natural resources during the last 40 years, its consequences offer differentiated fluvial perceptions among the BHIRC actors, provoking an environmental tension that derives on the appropriation of the watersides of the Branco and Colorado rivers, which are involved in the existence of small hydroelectric centrals. The result will allows us to identify that the conflict towards the river is not a contemporary issue, nonetheless, there are recent efforts to establish cooperation among the actors that live in the Western High Forest region and in the native area of Terras Indígenas Rio Branco, so as to struggle together to “free” the Rio Branco and allow everyone to have the same rights to make use of it. This fact mad it possible to identify an ongoing local environmental governance project by the Organized Civil Society, which establishes a dialogue from the river and not from its water. Although water and river are perceived in an intrinsically manner. Thus enabling the conclusion that hearing the perception of the actors and comprehending the relation that each territoriality establishes with the so called local hydric resource, must be considered in the process of implanting the Committee of the Hydrographic Basin of the Branco and Colorado rivers. By inserting direct representatives of each territoriality, as a way of conceiving an integrated water policy that includes multiple rights and duties. Abstract:
Background:           City Logistics is experiencing many innovative activities in the recent years. These activities are initiated and enhanced by numerous public and private actors, who jointly form innovative networks.   Purpose:                  The purpose of this thesis is to identify the actors, who jointly form the city logistics network, and determine their contribution towards innovation in these networks.   Method:                  The research is based on an interview study. We conducted interviews with representatives of a variety of city logistics actors. These interviews and additional secondary data were analyzed using content analysis. To illustrate the structure of innovative city logistics networks, we used a combination of systems and network theory.   Conclusion:             The results show that actors from six groups are strongly involved in city logistics innovation. These are policymakers, logistics companies, shippers & receivers, technology providers, research institutions and independent platforms. Actors in innovative city logistics networks show a sufficient level of commitment, but they have different focuses in their innovative activities. The most extensive contributions are made by policymakers and logistics companies. Still, policymakers struggle in their function as coordinators of city logistics.

Abstract:
Today, the healthcare IT vendors develop interfaces for their products to comply with the IHE Profiles and test them with other vendors in annual events, called IHE Connactathons which are one week events organized to perform interoperability testing. Network configuration including hostnames, IP addresses, port numbers for healthcare services and URLs for the various web services used in IHE profiles are stored on online databases accessible from the IHE website. When all companies register for participation to the connectathon, a default configuration is created in the database, assigning default values for healthcare service specific parameters. Afterwards, a company is expected to use the configuration parameters from that database during the connectathon. Except from the connectathons, the vendors could not test their products with other vendors&rsquo
. In this thesis, research on IHE Configuration Management Tool based on IHE profiles, ebXML ebBP, CPP and CPA specifications is presented. The intention behind developing such a tool is to automate the creation and exchange of configuration information between IHE Actors in a Virtual Connectathon Portal. The results of this research enable the IHE product vendors to test their products in interactions with other vendors through the web anytime/anywhere by automatic business service interface configuration. The research enables the healthcare systems to engage with many trading partners at the same time automatically. Full text
Abstract:
Encore is an object-oriented programming language which uses the acto rmodel as its concurrency model, and is specifically aimed atimplementing concurrent and parallel systems. Communication between actors is done via asynchronous method calls, which store their results in futures, placeholder objects for later storing the result of a computation. Encore currently lacks an exception handling mechanism, which is an important part of programming languages, and helps programmers create more fault tolerant and robust software. This thesis presents an exception handling implementation for Encore, in whichfutures are used to propagate errors between actors. The implementation uses a modified version of the open-source library Exceptions4C as a basis, and enables basic exception handling through try-catch-finally expressions. It uses type-based matching that also considers subtyping, and allows the programmer to define and throw custom exception types. Apull-model is used to enable inter-process communication of exceptions, where receiving actors can choose to handle exceptions at any point by consuming associated futures. The implementation is a good first step, but there are Encore features such as streams which it does not yet support. Furthermore, it brings an overhead to programs, which can be reduced by redesigning parts of the exception handling model.

Jarrett, Matthew W. "Non-state actors in Jamaican economic policy." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4778.

Full text
Abstract:
The relevance in understanding local dynamics or political culture is that as Neuman has pointed out, many traditional theories have not taken them into account and have thus failed in explaining political occurrences in the lesser developed world. For example as she has stated, "domestic factors" have not been considered into "systems theories". (Neuman, 1995, p.16) On this basis, it is necessary to point out these local factors, and furthermore, the role of non-state actors within the realm of internal dynamics, since international relations theory also aims to understand the formation and motivation behind economic policy. Therefore, to produce a proper understanding of Jamaican economic policy, specific areas are examined: the political culture of Jamaican politics and the role of non-state actors as they function within the Jamaican state. The two sets of non-state actors are defined as internal and external. The internal consists of two political parties: the People's National Party and the Jamaica Labour Party; and also one social class group: the urban poor. And also, the external consists of: the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The relationships between these groups and their relationships with the state are examined in order to identify how they affect economic policy. The constructivist theory due to its flexibility in its units of analysis, and its emphasis on "culture", and "worldview" helps to provide a useful framework for the discussion.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates individuals' privacy concerns about commercial actors online, where commercial actors are private organisations that profit through the collection and on-sale of, and/or targeted advertising using, the information individuals disclose online. My purpose is to demonstrate the affect that low privacy concerns for commercial actors can have on individuals’ privacy online, and to establish how and why these low privacy concerns are common among most individuals. I argue that individuals’ online privacy is inadequately protected from commercial actors’ information gathering practices, and that this will remain the case as long individuals do not harbour concerns for commercial actors. My argument is separated into three chapters. In the first chapter I illustrate the inadequate protections individuals have against commercial actors, who employ technologies to implicitly collect individuals’ personal information. In Chapter Two I establish the impact that individuals heightened privacy concerns can have on commercial actors. Cases of this are rare however, as I argue that commercial actors’ use privacy controls and strategic deployment of privacy related changes to successfully lower individuals’ privacy concerns. In Chapter Three I seek to understand why commercial actors’ privacy concern reducing techniques are effective by inspecting a particular online demographic – young adults. I conduct a long answer survey of 25 young adults to complement the scholarly research in the field. I argue that young adults do not harbour privacy concerns for commercial actors as they perceive more immediate privacy threats elsewhere online, specifically those that exist within their online network. I ultimately conclude that individuals’ privacy has inadequate protections against commercial actors, but that any attempt to improve these protections will have to clearly communicate to individuals both the commercial actors’ practices and why their actions justify concern.

Hagen, Achim. "Global Climate Policy Beyond Nation-State Actors." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/19547.

Full text
Abstract:
International cooperation to avoid dangerous anthropogenic climate change has proven to be very hard to achieve. The difficulties to reach a binding international agreement with sufficient reduction targets are evident and extensively discussed in the economic literature. Nevertheless, new ideas towards cooperation are evolving. This thesis offers an exploration of new avenues to international climate cooperation, widening the scope of game theoretic research on international environmental agreements towards global governance literature, political economy and trade. It also extends the potential applicability of the findings from the game theoretic literature on international environmental agreements for climate change mitigation as it discusses potential insights for cases of transnational climate adaptation. The analysis is based on analytical theoretical modelling, using a game theoretical model in which countries first choose between joining and not joining an international coalition. Then the coalition members choose their level of emissions cooperatively in a game between the coalition and the outsiders. It includes the possibility of multiple parallel climate clubs, focusing on their potential to enhance cooperation and emissions abatement. Further, the influence of political pressure groups (lobbies) that represent the interests of the industry and environmentalists on the stability of international environmental agreements is examined. This is done by augmenting the basic model of international environmental agreements with a politico-economic model of political contributions. The potential of trade sanctions to induce international cooperation for climate protection is assessed in an analytical model and the effects of these trade measures are then quantified in a static multi-region, multi-sector computable general equilibrium model of globaltrade and energy.

Peruzzi, Manuel. "Distributing Aggregate Computations on top of Akka Actors." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/17016/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of the Internet of Things, development of large-scale, adaptive systems usually focuses on the behavior of the single device. Aggregate programming is a paradigm that provides an alternative approach, in which the basic unit of computing is a cooperating collection of devices, instead of a single device. scafi is a Scala framework for aggregate programming, and provides an Akka-based platform for aggregate applications, supporting both peer-to-peer and server-based networks. Moreover, scafi offers a simulator module for the simulation of an aggregate system. The work described in this thesis consists in the analysis of scafi, in the partial re-engineering of its internal actor platform, and in the development of new features. The main goal is to enhance the flexibility of scafi in a distributed context, promoting its adoption for programming spatial systems. First of all, communication between distributed nodes is enabled, by defining a JSON-based serialization strategy, which promotes interoperability. A hybrid platform is also introduced, exploiting a peer-to-peer communication between devices, with a central unit that manages all the relevant space related information. This platform fills the main gap of the peer to-peer approach in a distributed environment: tracking of remote devices. Moreover, a code mobility approach is implemented, allowing the assignment of new programs to devices, at runtime. Lastly, the concept of monitoring a distributed aggregate system emerged, leading to the development of a graphical user interface, observing the devices in a running system. In this thesis, I present the new architecture and API of the actor platform of scafi, designed with the aim of ensure a more flexible approach for the development of distributed applications with aggregate computing.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the socio-economic characteristics, living and working conditions, educational profiles and the future expectations of the child workers, who have been living in tents for many years and working as agricultural workers at Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y areas of Tuzla Municipality (KarataS District) of Adana Province since the early 90s after having been forced to vacate their villages in Sirnak. Thesis tries to expose the poverty, deprivation and social exclusion experienced by families and children presently living in tents in Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y. It is also aimed at exposing the ways in which these people are deprived of their social and political rights as citizens. The main research question of the study is the motives behind the child labour observed in Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y. The study has found that the phenomenon of child labour in this area is the direct consequence of poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and denial of citizenship rights that these families had to face as a result of forced migration early in the 90s. Therefore, the study underlines, in conceptual terms, how their unfavourable circumstances lead to deep child poverty and consequently child labour and thesis also tries to bring attention to the children&

s situation by referring to their families&

poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and lack of citizenship rights. In this respect, the theory section of the thesis focuses on the relation of child labour and child poverty within the conceptualization of new poverty, internal displacement (forced migration), social exclusion and citizenship rights. One of the main argument of this thesis is that children from Sirnak who work in fields in Tuzla constitutes a different category of child labour. Even though they are paid child workers working in the agricultural sector and they live like migrant seasonal agricultural workers, they are not, since they are settled in the region for a long time. Another important argument of the study is that families of these children after the evacuation of their village did not migrate to urban areas like most of the internally displaced people did but moved to rural areas. In this sense, they are also in disadvantaged condition compared to other internally displaced people since they can not benefit from many social services, which is easy to reach in urban settings. Therefore, this study makes clear that the children and their families examined in this study are the part of the worst form of poverty in Turkey.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on interaction among young toddlers during their second year of life in a Swedish preschool. The overall aim of this thesis was to explore interaction, communication and the creation of friendship between the young children during self initiated play activities. In addition, this thesis presents the background of Early Childhood Education in Sweden, which may serve as an extended context for the study. An ethnographic study was carried out in a toddler unit with 15 children. Six one year old girls and boys were in focus during the observations for nine months. Participatory methods, photos, fieldnotes and videorecordings, were used for the data collection. The theoretical framework for the study is built on phenomenology, the view of the child as a social person and a child oriented perspective. The overall findings support a theoretical perspective where the young toddlers are seen as social actors, with social competencies. Their play invitation strategies, as well as their play enactment and play-closing moves, were mostly found to be based on nonverbal communication such as movements, gestures, voice quality and facial expressions. The competencies of attunement, taking others’ perspectives and turn-taking were found in play among the young toddlers, and they also showed negotiating skills while playing. The findings also show how young toddlers make friends. During their second year of life, they monitor and pay attention to individual peers, displaying intentionality and agency by spontaneously greeting their peers, by offering play invitations, and by helping peers. Mutual awareness, joint attention, shared smiles, coordinated movements, as well as other types of synchronized actions are seen as parts of nonverbal elements in emerging friendship. The findings in this thesis support an understanding of young toddlers as social persons in the preschool, engaged in consistent interest and attention towards each other while playing.

Parente, Genevieve. "Frozen assets : private sector actors in arctic governance." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/62498.

Full text
Abstract:
The circumpolar Arctic epitomizes global change as political, social, and economic activities continually reconfigure the region. Diverse actors negotiate around a range of pressing issues such as climate change, trade, defence, and natural resource development. In this international milieu, states seek to pursue national interests as well as cooperate with non-state, supra-national, and sub-national entities that increasingly influence the governance landscape. This project examines how private sector development and state interests interplay in efforts to develop Arctic natural resources and asks what this tells us about the role of the private sector in regional governance. This project contributes to theories of new forms of state power and the political construction of space, especially in critical geopolitical literature. It connects Arctic development and geopolitical literatures through an analysis of the implications of private sector development decisions for state sovereignty. It examines evolving forms of transnational governance in the context of globalized political and socio-economic processes. The circumpolar region is an excellent laboratory for scholars to consider similar issues of sustainability in broader global contexts. This study draws its empirical analysis from two case studies: the Siberian city of Norilsk, Russia and the North Slope Borough in Alaska, USA. The cases focus on recent multi-party policy negotiations at these sites of natural resource development. They are theorized in their own right, as examples of processes in diverse regions, with linkages between them also drawn out. I use a methodological approach that emphasizes the ‘how’ of governance, and explores the practices of policy-making. This framework captures the dynamic social processes that underlie governance in the circumpolar region. This dissertation aims to understand the intertwined roles of states and private sector actors in Arctic political affairs. However, it also contributes to our understanding of the global political economy beyond the Arctic. Economic development and investment decision-making in the circumpolar region have implications for Arctic states, global natural resource markets, energy importing states, as well as for northern residents.

Abstract:
A telecom industry is constantly looking for new ways to generate revenues by offering new and innovative services. Segmentation of customers by offering premium services to premium customers is a one way which has immense potential of revenue generation. Also, network and service providers are keen to provide specialized services with high quality and faster speed, with more emphasis on Quality of Experience (QoE), in order to enhance business revenue. The QoE concept offers several benefits to telecom operators as well as end-users, as it constantly monitors customer feedback and modifies services in order to delight customers. However, Net Neutrality is a current issue all over world and defined/re-defined in many ways, but many definitions overlooks practical difficulties and market realities. This demands in-depth analysis of Net Neutrality concept from regulatory and business point of view. Current business models for specialized services like Machine to Machine (M2M) communication and video streaming are not adequately designed to tackle regulatory issues such as Net Neutrality. Also the QoE concept needs to be tested on the level of Net Neutrality principles. This thesis discusses the business models incorporating QoE concept, along with analysing implications of Net Neutrality principles. The rules and regulations regarding Net Neutrality in Sweden are studied thoroughly in comparison with same principles in other countries like USA, India and countries from EU. The business models of M2M communication and video streaming services are presented and discussed considering effect of Net Neutrality regulations. Implications of Net Neutrality rules on specialize services, customized services, and zero-rating is presented. In order to have practical knowledge of telecom market and business strategies, several activities including brainstorming sessions with industrial experts and market surveys are carried out to generate meaningful conclusions. According to EU Net Neutrality rules specialized services, customized services and zero-rating services are allowed in Sweden with incorporating QoE.

Abstract:
Situated within the theatrical turn in Christian theology, this project explores theatre as a model for theological ethics, looking particularly at the dynamic interplay between formation as disponibility (availability) and performance as fittingness (appropriateness). A primary goal is to demonstrate how disponible formation and fitting performance are multi-dimensional realities oriented simultaneously toward the triune God (as playwright-producer-protagonist), Scripture (as transcript and prescript), the church (as characters in company), tradition (as performance paradigms), unbelievers (as audience), and local context (as theatrical environment and place). As a result, this theodramatic approach seeks to integrate theology and ethics, describing and resourcing everyday Christian practice with reflection on the theodrama. In addition, focusing on the dynamic interplay between formation and performance represents an attempt to unify agent-oriented with action-oriented theological ethics within a holistic, theodramatic framework. Finally, through attentive interaction with theatrical theory and practice, this project contributes to a fruitful and growing dialogue between Christian theology and the arts, particularly how theatre provides imaginative, heuristic models for theological ethics pursued within the liberating constraints of confessional Christianity.

Abstract:
The thesis continues the work undertaken in recent years by (in alphabetical order) James J. Marino, Scott McMillin, Paul Menzer, Simon Palfrey, Tiffany Stern, Evelyn Tribble, and others to put to use what is now known about the purpose, distribution, and usage of early modern actors' parts. The thesis applies the new methodology of reading 'in parts', or reconstituting early modern plays 'in parts', to the body of plays written by Ben Jonson. The aim of the project is to offer a reconsideration of Jonson as a man of theatre, interested not only in the presentation of his works in print, but also in their production at the Globe and at Blackfriars. By reconstructing and examining the parts through which the actors performing in Jonson's plays accessed their characters, the thesis proposes answers to the questions: how can we read and analyse Jonson's plays differently when looking at them in terms of actors' parts; did Jonson write with parts in mind; what did Jonsonian parts have to offer actors by way of challenge and guidance; what can we learn from parts about Jonson's assumptions and demands with regard to the actors; and how did actors themselves respond to those demands. These questions are significant because they engage critically with the tradition of seeing Jonson as a playwright dismissive of actors and distrustful of the theatre; they seek to establish a perspective that allows us to assess Jonson's abilities to instruct and challenge his actors through staging documents. More generally, the research contributes to the studies of the early modern rehearsal and staging practices and invites consideration of Shakespeare's part-writing techniques in contrast with those of his major rival. With no surviving early modern parts from Jonson's plays (indeed with only a handful of surviving parts from the period), the first task is to determine the level of accuracy with which the parts can be reconstructed from Jonson's printed plays. Stephen Orgel was by no means the first critic who used the example of Sejanus to assert that Jonson habitually doctored his plays before they were published, but his view has become a critical commonplace. This thesis re-examines the case of Jonson's revisions and concludes that, far from being representative, the 1605 Sejanus quarto is an anomaly which Jonson himself needed to account for in his address to the reader. It is true that Jonson cultivated a distinct style of presentation of printed material, but the evidence that he extensively tampered with the texts themselves after they were performed is scarce (again, the revisions found in the Folio versions of Every Man in His Humour and Cynthia's Revels are addressed and found to be exceptional, rather than typical), while the evidence of his pride in the original compositions and performances is much stronger. Since such enhancements as dedicatory poems, arguments (i.e. plot summaries), character sketches, or marginalia have no bearing on the shapes of actor's parts, they do not in any way compromise the reliability of the printed texts as sources from which Jonson's parts can, argues the thesis, be reconstructed with reasonable accuracy. Jonson, himself an actor and apparently a friend and admirer of a number of great actors of his age (Edward Alleyn, Nathan Field, Richard Robinson, Salomon Pavy, Richard Burbage), knew from personal experience how much depended on actors mastering, or, in their terminology, being 'perfect' in, their parts. By granting the actor access only to select portions of the complete play-text (i.e. his own lines and cues), the part effectively regulated the performance in cases when the actor had only limited knowledge of the rest of the play. Such cases seem to have been very common: documentary evidence suggests that actors had to learn their parts on their own over the course of a few weeks, and only then attended group rehearsals, most of which were concerned with 'business', not text which had already been learned. While some might have attended a reading of the play (if one was arranged for the benefit of the sharers, for instance), or gained more information about the play from their fellow actors, the parts remained their chief means of internalising their text and acquiring a sense of the play they were in. Jonson, who was not a resident playwright with any company performing in London and thus probably did not always have easy and regular access to the actors, could sometimes have taken advantage of the actors' dependence on their parts and crafted the parts as a means of exercising control over the performances of his plays. Building on this premise, the thesis examines various features of actors' parts that would have made a difference to an actor's performance. It draws on recent advancements in the studies of textual cohesion (linguistic features such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, etc.) to point out how the high and low frequency of cohesive ties (pairs of cohesively related words or phrases) in various sections of the part would have given an actor a good idea of how prominent his part was at any given moment. It examines Jonson's use of cues and patterns of cueing: like Shakespeare, Jonson was fond of using repeated cues to open up a space for improvisation, and he seems to have been aware of the need to provide the apprentices in the company with parts cued by a limited number of actors so as to allow for easier private rehearsals with their masters. The thesis also examines the common feature of Jonson's 'split jokes' - jokes that are divided across multiple parts - and asks whether any kind of comic effect can be achieved by excluding the punch line of a joke from the part that contains its setup, and the setup from the part that delivers the punch line, offering a fresh look at the nature of early modern comedy. In structural terms, the thesis considers how a narrative constituted solely by the lines present on an actor's part can diverge from the narrative of the play as a whole and how an understanding of a play as a text composed of actors' parts, as well as of acts and scenes, can help to refine arguments about Jonson's assumptions about the strengths of the companies for which he wrote. What emerges is an image of Jonson who, far from concerned only with readership, consciously developed a brand of comedy that was uniquely suited to, perhaps even relying on, the solipsistic manner in which the actors received and learned their parts.

Abstract:
This book, a short and easy read with common sense coaching and easy to follow exercises, takes beginning acting students through techniques and improvisations that will help them overcome perhaps their greatest fear: making “The Big Choice.” Using sound examples from classical as well as contemporary plays, Herb Parker makes it easier for the theatrical neophyte by making the case that a play is “about human beings caught in an outrageous situation, caused by love.” “Actor, director, teacher Herb Parker has given us a splendid new book about acting. He analyzes this ancient art in clear, precise, engaging prose while dispensing acute, methodical and perceptive advice. Brilliant actor that he is, Herb understands the craft, the exceptional director gently leads the actor toward a fully realized performance and the thoughtful, caring teacher explains it all to the reader (student). This is the book of acting you need and one you will cherish.”

Abstract:
My thesis focuses on issues related to value creation and value capture in business ecosystems. I explore how nonprofit and for-profit actors shape these ecosystems and their evolution through the design of relationships with key complements. The first chapter uses a formal model to study how a nonprofit actor, by strategically interacting with firms, can facilitate value creation in vertical supply chains. The second chapter studies the strategies that firms employ to shape the ecosystem they compete in and maximize value capture. Specifically, I look at firms’ decision regarding whether to make their product compatible with multiple complements or keep them exclusive for a specific complement in the context of anti-HIV drug market. I use a proprietary individual-level dataset on drug consumption obtained from the national French healthcare insurance and hand-collected data on clinical trials of anti-HIV drugs. The third chapter bridges the first two chapters and explores how nonprofit actors actively shape the ecosystem by comparing firm-sponsored and nonprofit-sponsored clinical trials on anti-HIV drugs. To conclude, I seek to understand how firms can maximize value creation and value capture in the contexts where complementary products are important. I strive to include nonprofit actors as an integral part of the ecosystem and understand how the actions of actors who do not seek to maximize profit affect the strategies of for-profit actors towards their complements

Mbouzeko, Raymond. Thesis, Lyon 2, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010LYO20066/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Malaria is an old endemic disease which means of prevention, treatment, not to name eradication, is well known and vulgarized. However, this disease is each year the main cause of sickness and death in Cameroon, in spite of tremendous endeavors to fight it. The present research has chosen to scrutinize social communication actors’ speeches on the disease to try and shed light into this paradoxical situation. Malaria inspires a number of discourses exchanges involving scientific representations and aged social representations of populations on the disease. Based on actors’ functions, one can distinguish between international and national discourses on the disease. National discourses mainly include medical speeches (produced and used by modern and traditional medical experts), economical and political speeches. The study of the construction of those speeches shows that at the national level, the speeches on malaria are adapted from global orientations on malaria control adopted at international level. In the other hand, those speeches respond to the economical and public health requirements, as well as to resources and social mobilization needed for malaria control.Discourses analysis on malaria in Cameroun has shown that the prevention of this endemic disease is render ineffective by many reasons, namely: a kind of game played by some key actors of the fight against malaria and the promotion of prevention methods that stand little chance to sustainably get raid of the malaria scourge in the country. Some actors, including persons attached to misleading social representations on malaria, prevent the main malaria targets (pregnant women and under five children) from access to impregnated mosquito nets. By involving themselves in the fight against malaria, some other actors put forward their own interest. Lastly, some speeches clearly show that prevention methods, promoted in the country, aim at protecting populations from mosquito bides while neglecting mosquito proliferation. The tendency is to consider malaria control as an exclusive health problem instead of treating it as a holistic developmental problem, widely calling upon sanitation measures to continuously cut down in mosquito population

Ezrol, Deanna Kerry. "Continental Drift: Australian Actors and their Pursuit of Hollywood." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24749.

Abstract:
The last substantive research examining the path of recent drama school graduates can be found in Paul Moore’s 2004 thesis, Longing to Belong: Trained Actors Attempts to Enter the Profession. I use his research as a springboard for examining the changes that have happened since 2004 when his research was conducted. My thesis examines specifically what Australian actors do in their career with regards to where they decide to pursue their craft. My curiosity in hearing anecdotally that ‘more and more’ Australians are moving to Hollywood to pursue a career and are “doing well” propelled me to specifically look at Australian actors who have gone to Hollywood. Drawing on one on one interviews, various media commentary, and industry publications, I take a deeper look at what the Australian actor of today is doing with regard to where they decide to position themselves. I also draw from the theories of Pierre Bourdieu to create a framework with which to better understand what is happening. My aim in this research is to better understand what the current day actors’ movements are at the onset of their career. If Hollywood is a destination for career actors, what is happening with this phenomenon? Why is the Australian actor attracted to Hollywood? What is the reception of Australian actors in Hollywood?

Kortman, Wendy. "Teachers as policy actors : an exploration of teacher actions to negotiate the policy demands of inclusive education." Thesis, View thesis, 2008. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/37127.

Full text
Abstract:
While recognising the complexity of inclusive educational policy for teachers, this thesis argues that a constructive approach for future action may be accomplished by drawing on teachers’ own accounts of significant characteristics contributing to effective inclusion. Accordingly, it is proposed that an understanding of the realities constructed by teachers involved in inclusive practice provides imperatives for future action. In particular, this study explores the finer structures of changed pedagogy, professional development of teachers and the vision of quality education for all that underpin the fabric of inclusive schooling. Furthermore, the study suggests that the focus on teachers’ own accounts or voice provides a major resource with which to theorise and analyse the actuality of inclusive practice and to help overcome barriers to success. In examining the work realities of teachers involved in inclusive education this thesis reports on the results of an empirically grounded and theoretically informed enquiry of the major educational reform of including students with disabilities into regular classroom settings. The case study site for this investigation included two schools, within the State of Victoria, Australia. Primary evidence generated through this study suggests that teachers’ work is a vital contributing factor to successful inclusion, despite the overpowering emphasis on additional funding within the political construction of policy implementation. However, teachers’ existing professional expertise and their professional development needs have not been a key focus of policies directed at sustaining the changed political culture required by inclusion. Drawing on relevant research literature and research evidence, this study argues against the political reductionism of both liberal pluralism and systems theory approaches that have dominated State policy action in inclusive education. In contrast the evidence presented in this thesis suggests the need to reconsider and revalue the knowledge and expertise generated by the education policy actors in this field, namely classroom teachers and school administrators involved in institutional planning and practice. It is these knowledgeable education workers who really influence policy implementation. The significance of this research is that the ‘insiders’ are presented as potentially important drivers shaping the mechanisms for educational reform. For this reason the framework of this study centres on the communicative infrastructures within existing institutions (schools) and the policy actors (teachers) who come together to formulate issues and professional directions. Therefore, the review of the research literature sets out to identify key theories and evidence pertaining to the teachers’ knowledge and learning communities. Literature on the importance of individual and collective agency is reviewed and situated in terms of the debates over the communicative action and life worlds of teachers at the sites of inclusive education reform. In turn, this provides a pathway for establishing the secondary evidence concerning what is currently known about the life worlds of teachers where change engages with struggles over ideological totality, elitist political agendas and the actualities of educational reform. Transcending critical and interpretive paradigms of educational research, capturing teachers voice on the complexities of inclusive education, the study moves beyond critical analysis of the way policies construct, or fail to construct, institutions and individuals within them. Inclusion is viewed through the life worlds of teachers involved in integration and inclusive programs, and situated within the context of their communicative actions. Data was generated through unstructured interviews where there was an emphasis on informal contexts and open communication that was free from system distortion. Communicative interaction was then expanded through a second semi-structured interview for the purpose of validation of the data and for testing the researcher’s construction of received messages. In addition feedback regarding emergent themes and representative quotes was also requested from participants. In this study the situated meaning of teachers’ work as an expression of policy-in practice was explored in relation to the textual framing created by State policy, institutions (schools) and teachers’ own skills and knowledge. The major perceptual elements for this research focus on the interrelation between these policy contexts, the paradigm that frames teacher’s professional knowledge and the pathways and processes for teaching and learning to occur.
