Full textWe argue that non-work-related activities - which we conceptualize as (inter)actions expressing autotelism, not or not directly instrumental, functional - are important in everyday work, apprehended in the space-time of the office working day. We assess the limitations we see in the "classic" interpretations of these activities in research ('mainstream', 'critical', and 'occupational health/suffering'-oriented approaches), from which we develop our theoretical conceptualization, as well as a specific methodological design aimed at apprehending them. This qualitative, abductive and constructivist design combines diaries and a dialogical exploration (interviews or written exchanges). Our results lead us to apprehend them as dynamic processes structuring daily work life, before proposing two specific articulations: First, we study their links with professionalism, questioning the dominant reading of them as opposed to it; we suggest instead that these activities, in their behind-the-scenes qualities (Goffman, 1973), reveal the tension between prescribed, actual and desired professionalism. Lastly, we examine the possible relationships between these activities and the creation of (non)sense related to work. We propose to articulate the (non)meanings produced at two distinct scales: daily work ((non)meaning at work), and work in daily life ((non)meaning of work), while raising the possibility of a null meaning. We contribute to the operational theorization of these activities and work itself (by distinguishing them from out-of-work and antiwork), and in practice, to the re-interrogation of everyday work, its conditions and its meaning, at multiple levels
Bret, Julien. "Travail global et production d’un individu servile : activités économiques et migrations de travailleurs non arabes au Liban." Thesis, Lyon 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO20136/document.
Full textThis work tries to set the figure of the individu servile to analyze the migration in Lebanon of non-Arab workers, Sri Lankan and Filipinos; 95% of these workers are women; the very figure of this individu servile is the female live-in domestic worker which is the major occupation in the context of a delegation of reproductive labor that includes also male workers. The first part is to clarify the theoretical framework and the hypothesis that structure this research (between the goals of a sociology of international migrations and those of a sociology of labor markets), and its methodological framework. In a second part, we set the migratory status of Lebanon and the transnational context of the fabrication of the individu servile, with reference to the new migrations in the Middle-East region. The social and economical rules - the kafala system at first - that organize the migration flux, the occupation of workers and their control through the labor process, result in a so-called nŽgativitŽ des rapports sociaux, which lies in an ideological or false process of recognition. In a third part, we show the gradual delegation of reproductive labor in urban Lebanese society, and the aspects of communities social segmentation; and we propose a vision of biographical splitting and subjective or self reconstruction in the process of careers to be distinguished between linearity, discontinuity and errance

Full textIn 2008, the World Bank has dedicated its "Annual Report on Development" to agriculture. This had not been the case for 25 years. It shows that agricultural growth is more effective than other sectors to reduce poverty. The agricultural labor productivity of the agricultural workforce is paradoxically barely mentioned: its explanatory factors for the short term as its structural variables in the long term are not analyzed. This thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic relationship between demography and non-agricultural development with agricultural development (increased productivity of agricultural labor). Under what demo-economic conditions can the structural transformation of an economy (i.e. the decline in the relative weight of the agricultural sector in the economy (workers and value added)) be accompanied by agricultural development? While an industrial or service sector that develops generally attracts workers, is there an opposite relationship in the agricultural sector? Does the agricultural sector have to lose its workers to develop? Has an agricultural sector ever developed in a context of continuous growth in the number of agricultural workers? Our main (hypo)thesis is that the dynamic combination of factors « land » and « agricultural worker », whose resultant is the « agricultural area worked per agricultural worker », is the real key to agricultural development, more than the productivity of the land.We analyze the determinants of the level and of the growth rate of the agricultural labor productivity over the 1980-2007 period, at different geographical levels. Special focus is put on the evolution of the « number of agricultural workers », using different sets of data (international, national, field surveys data), at different scales (world, Mexico, and 31 federal states 2400 Mexican municipalities) and with various methods (factor decomposition, maps, hierarchical ascending classifications, statistical inference, field surveys of farming households).Globally, we highlight a « race » between land and the number of agricultural workers in certain regions of the world and propose the concept of « demographic transition agriculture » and its associated typology.Mexico is then chosen for its agriculture showing very contrasting levels of development, for both synchronic and diachronic observation. We seek to understand the differences in agricultural development paths observed in Mexico by analyzing the influence of variables characterizing the non-farm economy, the substitution of machinery capital for labor, land liberalization, geography (physical and human). In international comparisons as within Mexico, we show that the growth rate of the area by agricultural worker has a marginally stronger influence on the growth rate of agricultural labor productivity, than the growth rate of land productivity. Finally, in the Municipality of Teopisca in the Los Altos region of Chiapas, we analyze the economic strategies of farm households « trapped » in a context of « blocked demographic agricultural transition » (downward trend of the agricultural area per worker): income diversification (toward the non-agricultural sector) and attempts to rise the land productivity are the two main strategies deployed under local severe constraints of market failures (labor, credit) and difficult access to irrigation water

Full textThe thesis questions the methods of organizing the devices for alternating training for insertion. Created forty years ago, in a context of economic crisis, this devices represent today a necessary step, especially for the young un-graduated. By studying the underlying logic of public insertion policies, the impact of the type of production "serviciel" on the activity of the employees and the constitutive pedagogy of these formations, the thesis reveals the tensions between the issues brought by different stakeholders and their effects on the learning process and insertion of youth. Starting from these aspects, substantiated in the first part, we have to see what is the position of the trainee activity carried in the company within these formations. The field survey allows, firstly, comprehending the diversity and the complexity of these work situations to which the trainees are daily confronted. It shows how the manage to mobilize or not, in this situations, the appropriate theoretical knowledge and the knowledge previously forged, to control their emotions, to invest the teachings drawn from their own history to reprocess the values held by the work place, to meet the requirements of the task and the expectations of the service to be performed. Afterwards, the empirical survey focuses specifically on the practices of the trainers upon the reflective moments dedicated to feedback. Caught in a pincer between urgency, economic efficiency criteria, the trainers do not really involve the trainees in an analysis of the lived experience. Therefore, many lessons rest in the shadow, resting undervalued in the insertion process

Full textOur lives hinge on our ability to hold information online for immediate use. For over a century, cognitive neuroscientists have regarded such working memory as closely related to consciousness, with both functions sharing similar features and brain mechanisms. Recent work has challenged this view, demonstrating that non-conscious information may affect behavior for several seconds, and suggesting that there exists a genuine non-conscious working memory system. I here combine behavioral and modeling approaches with time-resolved magnetoencephalography and multivariate pattern analysis to put this proposal to the test. In a first study, I rule out alternative explanations for the long-lasting blindsight effect, showing that it results from a genuinely non-conscious process. Crucially, this non-conscious maintenance is not accompanied by persistent delay-period activity, but instead stores information in “activity-silent” brain states via transient changes in synaptic weights. In a second set of experiments, I systematically evaluate key properties of conscious working memory in the context of long-lasting blindsight. While even multiple items and their temporal order may be stored non-consciously, manipulating stored representations is associated with consciousness and sustained neural activity. Together, these results challenge theories that equate the maintenance of information in working memory with conscious activity sustained throughout the delay period, but also contradict the notion of a genuine non-conscious “working” memory. Instead, I propose the existence of activity-silent short-term memory

Full textObstructive lung disease in children (asthma and bronchiolitis) are one of the main causes of admission to pediatric intensive care units. For several years, progress has been made to reduce the invasiveness of care resulting in a decrease in associated morbidity. The main objective of the thesis was to propose new ventilatory and non-ventilatory strategies based on physiopathology to optimize the care of such children. In children with severe bronchiolitis we evaluated the impact of prone position associated with non-invasive ventilation. The prone position decreases significantly the inspiratory work of breathing and improves the neuromechanical efficiency of the diaphragm. We also evaluated the effect of neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) that is a proportional ventilatory mode based on the electrical activity of the diaphragm. We demonstrated that NAVA improved the patient-ventilator interactions and decrease the work of breathing in comparison with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). We also evaluated the feasibility of high flow nasal cannula as a respiratory support in children with severe asthma attack. These strategies need now to be validated on clinical outcomes and are the subject of two ongoing multicenter randomized trials
