Melrose, Regalena G. "Self-efficacy and goal choice among acting-out adolescents." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=34525.

Abstract:
The goal of this study was to investigate self-efficacy and goal choice among acting-out adolescents in comparison to nonacting-out adolescents. One hundred and sixteen adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 participated. The adolescents were categorized as either acting-out or nonacting-out on the basis of their score on the Child Behavior Checklist-Teacher's Report Form (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1986), as well as on corroborated reports made by school administrators. Fifty-eight acting-out and 58 nonacting-out adolescents completed a questionnaire packet containing measures of self-efficacy, locus of control, self-mage, and goal choice. In addition, each adolescent was interviewed and administered a brief intelligence measure. With all demographic variables covaried, the primary findings of the study were that acting-out as compared to nonacting-out adolescents experienced more incidents of failure, displayed lower general self-efficacy scores, greater external loci of control, and chose goals that were vague or less specific. The negative experiences associated with behavioral problems, such as academic failure, apparently lower adolescents' self-beliefs and abilities to specify their goals. Despite their experiential differences, however, acting-out and nonacting-out adolescents displayed similar levels of social self-efficacy, real self-image, and ideal self-image, as well as similar goal setting abilities in areas other than goal specificity. All adolescents chose a comparable number of goals, as well as comparable levels of goal difficulty, goal commitment, and procedural knowledge. The stage of adolescence with its many changes, demands, and uncertainties apparently leaves most youths with comparable self-images and goal setting abilities, regardless of whether or not they have negative experiences of social and academic failure.

Abstract:
My thesis paper will address why I act and different aspects of my work as an actor. Acting training is a constant process and it is the job of the actor to keep up a regular routine that keeps one from going out of practice. I will discuss what I personally do regularly to stay in training. I will also discuss the process I go through to prepare myself to perform in acting roles. Though my approach to developing each new character is different, there are some aspects of my approach that remain constant. This paper will also describe the kinds of stories I am interested in telling. Though actors are equipped to tell a wide variety of stories from many different perspectives, I, as a Ghanaian female artist of color, am drawn to specific kinds of projects that relate to my life experiences. These are the stories that I feel compelled to tell. I believe my work is not just an occupation but rather encompasses the way I choose to live my life. So I will also discuss the ways in which I think my acting work is relevant in the world at large. I will include the ways in which I feel my work has had an impact in my environment, as well as how I hope to use my acting a vehicle to influence change in the future.

Chang, Li-Yu. "Acting it out : children learning English through story-based drama." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3128/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore why and how stories and drama can encourage children’s participation in class and also affect their learning of English as a foreign language in Taiwanese primary schools. The author takes a strong interest in both fields, English for Young Learners (EYL) and educational drama, and attempts to propose a solution, story-based drama, to two of the more common problems faced by teachers at primary level—mixed ability classes and limited teaching hours. The key methodological approach was action research in a case study format, using mixed methods and gathering quantitative as well as qualitative data in order to evaluate the impact of the author’s teaching on the children’s English learning. The quantitative research data was gathered with the aid of questionnaires responded to by one hundred and nine teachers and thirty-two fifth graders, while the qualitative data was collected from interviews, participant observation, fieldnotes, journals, artefacts, and video and audio recordings. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses revealed that the incorporation of stories and drama into the existing school curriculum was workable, and the story-based drama assisted the pupils to have greater participation in class and a higher degree of improvements than before in terms of their four language and non-verbal communication skills. This was corroborated by questionnaire results, interviewees’ responses, the co-teacher’s observations, and the pupils’ written work. The author recommends that a collaborative approach to curriculum design and research methodology could be adopted by teachers themselves or between teachers and researchers in order to stimulate more research on the use of story-based drama in similar contexts, while deepening our understanding of this resourceful teaching approach.

The aim of the present study was to understand the acting out of a group of adolescents from the psychoanalytic point of view. The objective was to examine if the "diagnostics group" technique applied to adolescents is efficient enough to make them aware of acting out phenomena and if it may be used to provide the appropriate means to understand actings implemented into the group. The chosen method was "applied psychoanalysis" that aims at practical results. Six adolescents between 13 and 14 years old of both genders participated in the research and the "diagnostics group" technique was applied to ten 90-minute meetings. Mathieu's (1967) "Contents Analysis" technique was adopted to analyze the collected data, which was then interpreted according to psychoanalytic and group-analytic references. The present study allowed us to understand acting out as a primitive process featuring archaic defense mechanisms, such as projection, dissociation, denial, disruption. In our group of adolescents, acting out occurred in two different ways, i.e., through communication and as an attack on group ties. As the meetings progressed, acting out decreased, which made us reflect on the importance of the group for those adolescents. We concluded that the group of adolescents acted on affective levels and that its members went through several situations of sensitization. Languages used were mainly symbolic, emotional, and marked by gestures. An atmosphere of cooperation between adolescents-colleagues was developed, which supported individual evolution. It was notable that the group technique applied to this research proved to be an efficient instrument to study the acting out of adolescents within the group.
Foi not?vel que a t?cnica de grupo praticada nesta pesquisa constituiu-se num instrumento eficaz para estudar o fen?meno do acting out do adolescente no grupo.

Abstract:
Abstract ROOTS – What Could Emerge Out of Thinking and Acting Networked ROOTS as Design?   This bachelor’s thesis uses ROOTS as a method designed to engage in both thinking and acting inside networks, by creating a hydroponic gardening network. As a designer one engages in many different fields of design. The most complicated design is designing networks with function, interlaced and embedded in everyday life. This is known as accountability, to be accountable to ones decisions and to act on many perspectives when designing. Accountability is designing from somewhere, and being aware of where that somewhere stems from. ROOTS visualizes accountability in a network, as accountability entails thinking and acting inside a network, and by doing so one actively engages in thinking about futures and design as a whole. When asking oneself what could emerge out of thinking and acting networked ROOTS as design, one begins to speculate in matters of vast networked complexity. From observation using methods such as ANT, the technologic extension T-ANT and also conducting a study in messiness, information is created and from the information, valuing becomes present, from valuing knowledge grows, from knowledge comes accountability and the network creates another cycle of ROOTS.   Keywords: Design, Network, Accountability, Complexity

Abstract:
For those who are just starting clinical practice, coming across a subject who self-cuts can be very disturbing. The gaze is summoned very poignantly. The question that guides this research is: in what way can the analytical device operate in the gaze/ speech/ psychic elaboration triad? To answer this, the focus of this work is based on the clinical material at our disposal. More precisely, we approached the act of self-cutting as it presents itself in neurotic subjects. As this act also appears in psychosis and perversion, further investigations are necessary. In Psychoanalysis, there is scant literature on this specific act to date, so we did a brief survey on the topic in Psychiatry, Anthropology, and Sociology. We also present the act of self-cutting in the context of media, as self-cutters use the internet and social networks as a means to anonymously bring to public notice their psychological distress. Using Freudian theory, we show the importance of coining the term \"act of self-cutting\" from a metapsychological point of view. Afterwards, we present two clinical cases where the concepts of anguish, acting-out and passage to the act, as seen by Freud and Lacan, became fundamental in conducting the analyzes of these clinical cases. With this, we hope to contribute to the expansion of the field of study on the subject

Abstract:

Laurie, Ian. ""All the world's a stage" : acting out the government-supported apprenticeship programme in England." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/358504/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since ‘Modern Apprenticeships’ were first introduced in England in 1994, government supported apprenticeships have gone undergone a series of transformations leading to them being underpinned since 2009 by statute and taking a central role in the current UK Government’s state-led vocational skills and education programmes for England. Accordingly, the numbers of people starting and completing apprenticeship programmes each year has increased rapidly, but these increases have also seen expansion in the support structures provided by central government, organisations and businesses. It is these ‘support structures’ that are the focus of this thesis; uncovering who the actors are and what roles they perform in the provision of England’s government-supported apprenticeship programme. Conducting interviews with a variety of people and organisations from government through to employers, this thesis considers apprenticeship in England by way of the public and private organisations that perform these varying roles. Beginning with two quotations which between them offer ideas of structure (‘script’) and agency (‘improvisation’), the research introduces an innovative use of an ancient symbol called a ‘triquetra’ (‘three cornered’) to create an ‘Apprenticeship Triquetra’. In the ‘Apprenticeship Triquetra’, three initial groups of actors – government, employers and training providers – and the many other organisations and businesses that operate in the spaces between them, are juxtaposed with their functional counterparts of governance, employment and education. The Apprenticeship Triquetra then explores the relationships between these ‘actors’ and ‘factors’ through sociological theories of Foucault’s (1978) governmentality thesis and Actor Network Theory (Latour, 1987; Law, 1987). By adding a historical lens to the concepts and theories and drawing a Ii distinction between the apprenticeship ‘programme’ and the apprenticeship ‘system’, apprenticeship is shown to be a site of complex social interactions and vested interests. This multifaceted research presents a unique critique of apprenticeships in England and concludes with three findings. The first is that there appears to be a concerning level of commodification that has developed in the apprenticeship system. The second finding relates to the way in which the power of the government has been used to direct the apprenticeship programme and system. The third finding constitutes that of an observation born out of this thesis’ historical and contemporary narratives: apprenticeship acts as a social barometer reflecting broader social contexts

Foley, Damian T. "Fleshing out the fictive soul: A screen actor’s personalisation of characterisation through collaborative subtextual improvisation." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2022. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2600.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led research formulates a method for collaborative characterisation by merging the filmmaker/director’s approach and the screen actor’s technique. This method provides access to a deeper emotional ‘inner world’ submerged within the imagined subconscious of the fictive character. This exploration into varying improvisational filmmaker/director’s practices aimed to identify the most effective methods of supporting the screen actor’s access to emotional subtext by submergence and living through the fictive character’s subjective experience. The outcome is a flexible directorial approach focused on collaborative characterisation method/s to be employed during the filming process while remaining within the scripted context. The research was inspired by luminary improvisational and collaborative filmmakers, including John Cassavetes and Mike Leigh, and further contextualised by contemporaries such as Derek Cianfrance, Milos Forman, Darren Aronofsky and Lynn Shelton. This thesis draws parallels between the theoretical underpinnings of their approaches and the pedagogical frameworks of acting technique authors, teachers and coaches, including Judith Weston, Sandford Meisner, William Esper and Robert Carnegie. Apart from literature and practice reviews, this research involved three practice-led phases: shadowing improvisational filmmaking practice alongside studio exploration, semi-structured interviews (with the student actors), and journaling. Investigation into Leigh’s process was extended by direct observation and participation in the creative practices of directors Chris Edmund and Robert Marchand. The initial inquiry into Leigh’s process investigated whether any improvisational techniques could be extended to evoke an unexpected moment-to-moment awareness in an actor’s performance during the actual filming. This led to the second phase of questioning to determine which techniques practiced by Leigh could be reformulated and extended to those of filmmakers such as Cassavetes, Cianfrance and Shelton. In addition, Judith Weston’s active engagement in improvisational rehearsal techniques led me to participate in her directors’ workshop at Judith Weston Studio in Los Angeles, California. The findings from the first two phases resulted in a third, unexpected question, suggesting this directing approach be reframed and contextualised by the acting technique pedagogies of Weston and Meisner. Consequently, the final significance of my research findings occurred while auditing a Meisner acting class taught by founding director Carnegie at the Playhouse West, North Hollywood, California. This research offers an alternative model for collaborative directors, which is based on Meisner’s acting technique and newly aligned with the directing practices of Cassavetes and Shelton. My conclusive outcome involved reformulating screen acting techniques based on Meisner’s departure from Konstantin Stanislavski. Subsequently, this reformulation clarified and revealed my own pedagogical schism with Leigh’s and Weston’s approaches. The goal remained to find an acting technique that would cohesively merge with a directing approach that allowed the actor to retain immediacy and spontaneity while staying emotionally congruent with the character’s imaginative backstory and yet working moment-to-moment with their still emerging ‘life script’. The significance of this research is its formulation of a collaborative language and working method for actors, directors and filmmakers focused on evoking an authentic voice for the fictive character as if they possessed a consciousness of their own volition while living through the actor.

Abstract:
The Bender-Gestalt test is one of the most widely used psychological tests in clinical practice. However, very few empirical studies have investigated its projective use with adults. The purpose of the present study was to replicate a study conducted by Sellbom et al. (2001), which examined distortions of the Bender-Gestalt hypothesized to measure antisocial, impulsive, and depressive characteristics. It was found that the findings in Sellbom et al. (2001) were partially replicated, indicating that certain distortions, especially in conjunction, were significantly related to antisocial characteristics. The author suggests that the Bender-Gestalt could potentially be used as a screening measure for antisocial characteristics, but not to measure impulsive and depressive characteristics.

Full text
Abstract:
Nurses working in an acute psychiatric setting within a veterans' administration hospital must maintain a therapeutic milieu by recognizing and managing aggressive behaviors before violence ensues to reduce injuries to staff nurses and patients. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based and theoretically grounded educational program that will help staff nurses manage escalating aggression, violence, and acting out behaviors to provide a safe environment for patients and staff through high risk identifier recognition and intervention training. During the data and information gathering stage, 23 articles were reviewed, rated, and graded to provide the most significant information used to complete the project. The project is a workshop made up of a 6-module curriculum that will be used to train staff nurses. This workshop will be shared with the partnering organization including the recommendation that it is adopted and implemented at a later date. The educational training program will have the potential to become a practice standard for other acute psychiatric settings within the Veterans Integrated Service Network to provide a tool that will assist the nurses as they care for the patient and maintain safety. Social change will occur through the empowerment of nurses who interact with veterans to bring them better and safer care.

Bear, Daniel. "Adapting, acting out, or standing firm : understanding the place of drugs in the policing of a London borough." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2013. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of police recorded incidents in England and Wales involving cannabis more than doubled between 2004 and 2009 even though use of the drug was in decline and official policy was geared towards tackling drugs ‘that cause most harm’(Home Office 2008). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a single London borough during the 12 months leading up to the 2011 riots, this research examines the place of drugs within everyday policing, focusing on the working lives of street-level police officers who are not attached to specialist drug squads. The concept of bifurcation (Garland 1996, 2001) is used to make sense of, ”a series of policies that appear deeply conflicted, even schizoid, in their relation to one another” (Garland 2001, pg. 110). Analysis of the ethnographic data shows how the ‘structured ambivalence’ of state responses is evident in relation to front-line policing, including the policing of drugs. We find that the backbone of modern policing, Response Teams, are being pulled towards a ‘classic’ style of policing where officers ‘act out’ and impose order through the visible exercise of their powers, reasserting the authority of the state. This is a far cry from officers in Safer Neighbourhood Teams who work predominantly on Community Policing efforts, adapting their working styles, engaging with community partners, and focusing on ‘damage limitation’ efforts. The thesis charts these different orientations in relation to officers’ general activities, before going onto show how they are visible in the way each team approaches drugs policing. From here it will be argued that the increase in recorded incidents involving drugs reflects the influence of New Public Managerialism and the focus on output-based targets. These performance targets were easily fulfilled by targeting low-level drugs offences, and once met, officers were free to police as they saw fit. Instead of officers evolving their practices as the organisation evolved, NPM allowed officers to stand firm and maintain their culture, policing practice, and sense of mission. The author accompanied both Response Teams and Safer Neighbourhood Teams of the Metropolitan Police Service during their shifts, and also conducted 23 interviews with officers. This research also developed new digital ethnography methods that might be utilised by ethnographers in other disciplines.

Abstract:
In the modern societies, the answer to the criminal act is a prison sentence. Due to the nature of certain acts, with this prison sentence, some court-ordered treatments (COT) (obligations and injunctions of treatments) have been added. Ethically, this law request and its social asking don’t exempt to think about the prisoner ‘asking, which is the trigger of psychotherapies. There is any retroactivity of the law and of pronounced sentence. For this research, the prisoners were selected on their own asking of care (the court-ordered treatments couldn’t applicate). The asking of the prisoners is therefore a criterion common to them (these prisoners). In this context, the acts have distinguished according to the mechanisms which have governed the nature of the act: recourse of act or acting out. Many experts agree on the existence of premature narcissistic failures. However, discussions persist on the nature of the act and on its aspect, either single dimension or multiple and complex dimensions (objective behavior, social consequences and underlying mechanisms ...). Yet all these theoretical models on narcissistic failures lean on the “recourse to act” as if there was only a simple nature to act

Abstract:
Inspired by the article Special support on dubious grounds published in Teachers News (2010), we chose to examine the methods and procedures regarding acting out children without diagnosis. In preliminary work, we discussed the various forms and causes of acting out behavior among children in preschool and supervision and conflict management. The topic seemed relevant since we on several occasions experienced a feeling of inadequacy and lack of knowledge in our educational role both in teacher training placement time and during our working years as supply teacher and graduated child minders. Based on our past experiences and interests of acting out children without the diagnosis, work limited extent and time aspect for the course of the work we chose to only interview three pedagogues. Through the interviews, we wanted to compare these three pedagogues description of their work around acting out children without diagnosis in relation to accepted theories such as structure and clarity. The purpose of our study was based on previous research and relevant literature, to find out what supporting possibilities, available methods and tools, and the methods and tools the interviewed pedagogues say they use in the meeting with acting out children.

Abstract:
This study aims to shed light on children’s own perspectives on the time they spend in a group were there are children with acting out-behaviour who may expose them to daily verbal and / or physical abuse. Children in two groups where there are acting out children were interviewed individually. The children in group one were six or seven years old and in group two they were eight or nine years old. There are not many studies on the subject since it’s usually only one side of the story represented in various studies and literature. Children with special needs are far more often represented there than the ones without. The children with acting out-behaviour naturally gets more attention than the other, perhaps more silent children, and it’s easy to forget them in the turmoil that can occur in the class room. In today’s schools inclusion is often considered to be the only or right way to go and focus is very strongly directed towards the children with special needs. Children who are exposed to violations that may occur in situations where inclusion is not fully functional sometimes takes second place. This study shows how children experience the time spent in a group where inclusion works less than desired. Children who find themselves in situations where a child or children in their group are acting out strongly verbally and / or physically can be anxious or fearful on a daily basis. Many of the children interviewed witnessed that they felt sad over the verbal abuse and felt fear of getting attacked by the children who was acting out repeatedly. The study also shows that the children believe that it gets better with time but almost every one of them testify of a first year with constant violation of their person, both verbally and physically. Despite teachers pedagogical explanations about the acting out-behaviour the children still feels abused.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how pedagogues work with children that express acting out behavior in pre-school. The research questions are: How do the interviewed pedagogues define children that express extroverted behavior in preschool, and what is the reason for the behavior? How do the pedagogues work to ease daily activities for these children in preschool? Which methods do the pedagogues use to approach these children in the optimal manner in different situations? This study is based on four qualitative interviews with preschool teachers, after-school teachers and nurses from two different preschools. The results of this study are analyzed through the sociocultural theories of Vygotskij and subsequent terms, but also with regards to other articles and scientific literature of interest. The results of this study indicate that the reason for acting out behavior can be due to environmental flaws, or factors within a child. In their work the pedagogues practice different methods. To e.g. calm the child, one may listen to or confirm the child’s emotions, and in conflict situations it is important that the pedagogue remains calm, to reduce the risk of emotional contagion. It was also evident that a well-structured day with distinct routines, in combination with a physical environment at the preschool that is tailored to the child’s own preconditions, better prepares the child for future activities. This study indicates that pedagogues enable common games and activities, to make it possible for children with acting out behavior to train their social competencies with other children. This is achieved with the aid of a present pedagogue that guides the child stepwise so that the child understands and predicts the consequences of the actions, but also understands the limits of behavior.

Full text
Abstract:
Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close stands out from the nationalistic-toned American “9/11 novels”. It depicts the story of a young boy and his grandparents who are left with the aftermath of losing a loved one in the attack on the twin towers. However, the complexity of the three main characters and the depth of their individual and common traumas make the novel go beyond the usual nationalistic 9/11 narrative and focus on the personal and, consequently, the national trauma.  This essay analyses the possibility of coping with and recovering from trauma through communication. Dominick LaCapra’s trauma theory notions of “working through” and “acting out”, as well as other traumatic memory research highlight the necessity of utterance in order to overcome trauma and to attempt an existence beyond it. In the instance of the three traumatized characters of the novel, the confessional language is entangled, broken and sometimes muted. This makes the recovery difficult in the case of the grandparents, almost impossible for the character of Grandpa. When it comes to the young boy, Oskar Schell, a more successful communication seems to open up the possibility of mental healing. These personal traumas are a reflection of a broader American trauma where an obsessive “rememoration” of the September 11 events and one-sided, revenge loaded public discourse do not seem to facilitate the national healing process. On all these levels, personal and community, the need and the difficult attempt to communicate the trauma of 9/11 does not necessarily grant recovery from it, but it facilitates a desired “working though” process.

The objective of this action-research was to verify if fairy tales listened in the classroom, and , right after, performed in Game Workshops, undergo any backwash when acted out graphically by a 3rd year primary school classroom. The qualitative research was conducted in a public school in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina State. The instruments used for data collection were the children graphic records and the field diary. The data analysis was done by the content analysis technique. In the process of analyzing, a comparison was made between the fairy tale told in the classroom by the teacher, and the representation of the same fairy tale written by the children. After being categorized, the written records of the children, along with the field diary content, compose in an articulate manner and in theory state, the analysis and data discussion. Concluding, it can be said that in the practice of Game Workshop tasks, children became co-authors and authors of their own stories. In the rewriting moment, they had already assumed the role of authors, which was totally supported through the Game Workshop.

Abstract:
The goal of this study is to increase the knowledge of how Special Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) working in Elementary school yr 1 – 6 percieve the work with children who are acting out. The study is based on six SENCOs’ perceptions of their preconditions of working on organisation, group and individual levels, as well as the schools’ methods and strategies and the percieved results in the work with children who are acting out. The study presents parts of both national and international evidence based research within the area of methods and strategies used in the line of work with children who are acting out. It also presents three theoretical perspectives.   In the study a qualitative research method has been used and the results has been analysed thematically. The analysies of the empirical evidence generate three main themes: preconditions, methods and strategies as well as possabilities and challenges in the work with children who are acting out. The result has been discussed and analysed based on pre-existing research and theoretical perspectives.   The result shows that the SENCOs’ perceptions is that there is often good preconditions in the work with children who are acting out but that there is also obsticales and possabilities affecting said precontitions. The principals’ leadership and ability to organize the school to meet the needs of children who are acting out is percieved to be of great importance. Teachers’ lack of time is seen as a difficulty, as the SENCOs emphasise the need for all staff to meet and produce plans of action with overarching strategies and approaches to the children who are acting out.   The result also shows that the learning enviroment can be organized in different ways and that the SENCOs’ perception of students inclusion varies, even if the standpoint is that students who are acting out shall participate in a learning context together with other students. The result also shows that the staff’s approach to, treatment of and ability to build relationship with the student affect the student’s ability to act out less and learn more.

Assessment of parenting stress and child acting-out behavior was measured via pretest and posttest over the length of a seven-session parenting program, the Becoming a Love and Logic Parent program (BLLP). All participants (n=86) were randomly placed in either a seven-session BLLP program group (n=56) or placed on a waitlist (n=30) and offered the BLLP program following the completion of the posttest. The BLLP program is a widely used parenting program with limited data available as to the effectiveness of the program. The data that are available utilizes the Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Before and After Questionnaire. A measurement tool designed specifically to measure the BLLP program. This study utilized two measurement tools widely used to evaluate parenting programs, the Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF) and the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI), in hopes of providing data that can be compared to other parenting programs. Levels of parenting stress were measured with a widely used index, the PSI/SF. The PSI/SF provides a Total Stress (TS) score and scores from three scales measuring different aspects of parenting stress: Parental Distress (PD), Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction (P-CDI), and Difficult Child (DC). Child acting-out behavior was measured with the ECBI. The ECBI measures disruptive child behavior using two scales: Intensity scale and a Problem scale. The intensity scale provides information regarding the frequency of certain acting-out behaviors, and the problem scale provides information as to whether or not parents view that particular behavior as problematic. All participants were parents or caregivers of elementary school students from a large suburban school district near Kansas City, Missouri. The group was homogenous in nature and had higher income and education levels than the average for the district and state, making it difficult to generalize finding from the study. Due to time and space limitations and attrition, the sample size of the study was small (n=86), which likely contributed to the outcome of the study. The six hypotheses were not supported in this study. Though a decrease in parenting stress occurred for both treatment group and control group participants, there was not a statistically significant difference between the two groups on any of the PSI/SF scales. Child acting-out behavior also decreased for both the treatment group and the control group; however, there was not a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Further study on the effectiveness of the BLLP program is recommended.

Abstract:
Suicides at workplaces, received as the peak of a suffering-at-work phenomenon, confirm the unease in the culture as well as it sends back its mystery to the social sphere. These suicides ask insistent questions to the working society and peculiar ones about the acting out. First this thesis endeavours to establish the epistemological basis, that is to say the sociologicals and psychoanalyticals ones, that enable to explain both the question and the effects suicides establish. Then, thanks to a clinical case, we will suggest a particular distinction between the unconscious causality of the acting out on the one hand, and the consistency of the phenomenon’s serial organization on the other hand. The conclusion will lead to what is at stake of enjoyment from an economic and social point of view

Di, Nucci Ezio. "Mind out of action : the intentionality of automatic actions." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/2587.

Full text
Abstract:
We think less than we think. My thesis moves from this suspicion to show that standard accounts of intentional action can't explain the whole of agency. Causalist accounts such as Davidson's and Bratman's, according to which an action can be intentional only if it is caused by a particular mental state of the agent, don't work for every kind of action. So-called automatic actions, effortless performances over which the agent doesn't deliberate, and to which she doesn't need to pay attention, constitute exceptions to the causalist framework, or so I argue in this thesis. Not all actions are the result of a mental struggle, painful hesitation, or the weighting of evidence. Through practice, many performances become second nature. Think of familiar cases such as one's morning routines and habits: turning on the radio, brushing your teeth. Think of the highly skilled performances involved in sport and music: Jarrett's improvised piano playing, the footballer's touch. Think of agents' spontaneous reactions to their environment: ducking a blow, smiling. Psychological research has long acknowledged the distinctiveness and importance of automatic actions, while philosophy has so far explained them together with the rest of agency. Intuition tells us that automatic actions are intentional actions of ours all the same (I have run a survey which shows that this intuition is widely shared): not only our own autonomous deeds for which we are held responsible, but also necessary components in the execution and satisfaction of our general plans and goals. But do standard causal accounts deliver on the intentionality of automatic actions? I think not. Because, in automatic cases, standard appeals to intentions, beliefs, desires, and psychological states in general ring hollow. We just act: we don't think, either consciously or unconsciously. On the reductive side, Davidson's view can't but appeal to, at best, unconscious psychological states, the presence and causal role of which is, I argue, inferred from the needs of a theory, rather than from evidence in the world. On the non-reductive side, Bratman agrees, with his refutation of the Simple View, that we can't just attach an intention to every action that we want to explain. But Bratman’s own Single Phenomenon View, appealing to the mysterious notion of 'motivational potential', merely acknowledges the need for refinement without actually providing one. So I propose my own account of intentional action, the 'guidance view', according to which automatic actions are intentional: differently from Davidson and Bratman, who only offer necessary conditions in order to avoid the problem of causal deviance, I offer a full-blown account: E's phi-ing is intentional if and only If phi-ing is under E's guidance. This account resembles one developed by Frankfurt, with the crucial difference that Frankfurt – taking 'acting with an intention' and 'acting intentionally' to be synonymous – thinks that guidance is sufficient only for some movement being an action, but not for some movement being an intentional action. I argue that, on the other hand, Frankfurt's concept of guidance can be developed so that it is sufficient for intentional action too. In Chapter One I present and defend my definition of ‘automatic action’. In Chapter Two I show that such understanding of automatic actions finds confirmation in empirical psychology. In Chapter Three I show that Davidson's reductive account of intentional action does not work for automatic actions. In Chapter Four I show that the two most influential non-reductive accounts of intentional action, the Simple View and Bratman's Single Phenomenon View, don't work either. And in Chapter Five I put forward and defend my positive thesis, the 'guidance view'. Also, in the Appendix I present the findings of my survey on the intentionality of automatic actions.

Abstract:
This scientific essay starts with a description of a dilemma that I as a childminder find hard to handle. The story is reproducing an incident where this day care child -John- is getting an outburst that is affecting many persons in the group activity local for childminders. The problems that are created by the repeated defiant and unwieldy outbursts by this boy are challenging to handle. I have got certain experiences of children with special needs, but that competence is not sufficient in this case. The text also describes the doubt if a single childminder really is capable to handle a child that is demanding a lot more assistance than what is normal among day care children. Is it possible to offer all the children secure attention and interesting learning when one of them is demanding extra attention and support? Would an single-handed educator be able to help the boy to function better in social contexts? When I reflect over my dilemma, I am framing my questions. Through the writing I seek a deeper insight about what solutions eventually turns out to work for the challenging child. As a result of this examining writing process, I have found that the including of the child in the day care group was successful beyond expectation. The relation between me and the child is developing in a positive way when I choose to handle his tantrums in a less emotional way. An empathic approach and dialogues opens up for a cooperation which give the child possibilities to become a participant and able to affect his everyday situation at the family day care. The smaller group is a postulate for the positive development taking place within the boy. According to me, professional childminders should have a natural place as carers to children who for various reasons do not work or thrive in larger groups. The essay also includes explorations of other educators experiences in the form of participating observations on a preschool. The initial report, the observations, the empirical analysis and the result are all linked together with the theories of practical knowledge, my reflections, new insights, theoretical knowledge, research and literature that strengthen these. The practical knowledge is running like a red thread through the text.

Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AIXM3054.

Full text
Abstract:
From our clinical experience with prison inmates, our research work proposes a theoretical paradigm of the concept of acting-out in relation with the superego instance. The purpose is thus to bring out the metapsychological stakes and issues of the superego concept as they appear in the clinical approach of the acting-out, and more specifically in relation with the criminal act, while tracing back the conditions of its theoretical elaboration. Even if the foundations that Freud laid is essential to our reflection, the kleinian concepts of primitive superego and of paranoid-schizoid position will be far more precious to us in this endeavour to reflect on the reappearance of certain modes of functioning which are under the supremacy of a particularly cruel and destructive superego. This aspect, which Lacan has reformulated with his view of an imperative superego, will provide the basis for our discourse. While the superego instance is first identified through its function of moral consciousness, as a legislating instance, there also exists a more paradoxical double polarity whereby the reverse side of the Law is expressed through a ferocious and cruel injunction to have enjoyment (“jouissance”). Within this perspective, the criminal acting-out appears like the irrepressible response to the injunction of a strong Superego pushing to commit harsh and virulent actions. This thesis notably insists on the criminal act seen as a last resort. A resort which aims at releasing oneself from the position where one has become the object of the Other's “jouissance”, while one tries, at the same time, to be a subject

The relationship between psychoanalysis and femininity has always been tormented : often blamed for its phallocentrism ; psychoanalysis, on the other hand, would blame women for not revealing their mystery. This thesis examines the relationship between the Freudian apparatus and femininity, and this with a specific goal, to highlight the active and even combative nature of women in Freudian thought ; but also the fact that psychoanalysis has never resigned from facing the incredible challenge represented by the meeting with the feminine soul. Aggressiveness being in the center of his becoming as a gendered being, the Freudian woman maintains a close relationship between death drive and acting out. This proximity as well as the women’s question in Lancanian theory helps us to establish our hypothesis in which acting out may constitute an expression of the woman’s being. What comes out of it is a clinical approach of the acting out in the feminine, involving two major issues for psychoanalysis : First femininity conceived as a style which is inscribed in the heart of the psychic structure, through more or less particular acting out ; secondly a study of the inner logic of the act, involving a distinction between the basic structure of the act and the clinical structure of the subject. That allows us to combine the question of the psychosexual position of the subject and the one of the psychic structures. In the third part of our thesis, we illustrate that point by clinical vignettes about women in the setting of Colombian armed conflict. The figure of warrior woman is thus expanded to feminine clinic as such

Abstract:
This research, in conjunction with our clinical practice in prisons, focuses on emotions in violent act. The terms "emotion" and "act" must be understood in a general sense because we start from what is visible for up to psychic functioning. Our research interest in the theory of violent act and psychoanalytic theories of affect. It's important not only focus on the violent act and we questionned the functioning of the author of violent act and the relationship between one type of act (different type of acting out ) and psychic functioning. The theoretical foundations of limit states and psychosomatic seem to bring us interesting answers. Thus, an analysis of the operation according to the act, we prefer to have a reading that part of the psychic functioning to illuminate the understanding of the act. In general, beyond wanting to clarify what types of operation belongs act, we would first like to emphasize the plurality of functioning in the clinic act

Abstract:
Addictions, acting-out and eating disorders are known to be comorbid with borderline personality disorder. Their high frequencies mean that they support involvements and functions in the way that borderline personality operates. Borderline subjects are led to acting-out urgently by mood disorder, depression, emotional instability and incapacity to regulate them. In borderline personality, defense mechanisms are diversified between nevrosis and psychosis. The major dysfunction seems to set on fail of self-containing and porosity of the borders of the self. Identity disorder and narcissistic failures are the main issues in borderline personality disorder which lead to recreate pathological relationship to the primary object with later relationship. Dependent relationship and fear of abandonment manage borderline subjects and their symptomatology with addictions and acting-out. This research aim to examine different dimensions: interpersonal dependency, attachment, alexithymia, depression, hopelessness feeling, anaclitism, dependent and avoidant personality disorders according to addictions with and without drugs, and suicide attempts and non suicidal self-injury

Full text
Abstract:
Behind every act there is a sort of "staging", an "attempt to express" what the author cannot put into words nor metabolize, which leads him to act. In this work, amoung Authors of Infringement of Sexual Character (AISC) within familial, the aim is to understand and apprehend the conditions that triggers the act and how they affected the subject's psyche, leading him to give into the transgression.Through notions taken from the analytic's literature, in particular notions linked to the psyche's construction, to traumatic clinic or even the transgenerational transmission, we debate on the question of the influence of the environment on the individual's psyche functionning. Thereby posing hypothesis that identifications and transgenerationals repeats of traumatic origin can contribute in triggering the act, even more for AISC within familial. Could this kind of acting out then represent the consequences of a family's dynamicity experienced as "failing", or even traumatic, by the subject? Using a phenomenologic approach associated with a psychoanalytic positioning, the thorough analysis of seven case-studies could help answer those questions. The objective is to create a clinic study based on the subjective experience of each of them. This is done in hope to bring forward what could lack in their structuring, in their objectals investments and relationships. This trip through the proposed cases allow the question of whether the resolvent nature of these acting out vis-à-vis a family's dynamicity in which a traumatic experience takes its roots? Through the sexual offence, perpetrated within the family, is the subject using the body and the objectisation of another family to shout out his suffering, his "ill-being"? Is the acting out, for Authors of Infringement of Sexual Character (AISC) within familial, a consequence of a traumatic identity crisis, the need to find a sense or the search to the meaning to the subject's own existence? Through the analysis of defense mechanisms, representations, transference and counter-transference positions put in place, the goal is to help rework the senses, allow those patients to develop their elaboration capability, to give them a place, with respect to their subjectivity and that of other, a place capable of sustaining the construction of their originally deficient identity, to rediscover an identity that surpasses the trauma, and open the gates of reconstruction

Abstract:
The general aim of the thesis was to investigate how and to what extent the characteristics of action organization are reflected in language, and how they influence language processing and understanding. Even though a huge amount of research has been devoted to the study of the motor effects of language, this issue is very debated in literature. Namely, the majority of the studies have focused on low-level motor effects such as effector-relatedness of action, whereas only a few studies have started to systematically investigate how specific aspects of action organization are encoded and reflected in language. After a review of previous studies on the relationship between language comprehension and action (chapter 1) and a critical discussion of some of them (chapter 2), the thesis is composed by three experimental chapters, each devoted to a specific aspect of action organization. Chapter 3 presents a study designed with the aim to disentangle the effective time course of the involvement of the motor system during language processing. Three kinematics experiments were designed in order to determine whether and, at which stage of motor planning and execution effector-related action verbs influence actions executed with either the same or a different effector. Results demonstrate that the goal of an action can be linguistically re-activated, producing a modulation of the motor response. In chapter 4, a second study investigates the interplay between the role of motor perspective (agent) and the organization of action in motor chains. More specifically, this kinematics study aims at deepening how goal can be translated in language, using as stimuli simple sentences composed by a pronoun (I, You, He/She) and a verb. Results showed that the perspective activated by the pronoun You reflects the motor pattern of the “agent” combined with the chain structure of the verb. These data confirm an early involvement of the motor system in language processing, suggesting that it is specifically modulated by the activation of the agent’s perspective. In chapter 5, the issue of perspective is specifically investigated, focusing on its role in language comprehension. In particular, this study aimed at determining how a specific perspective (induced for example by a personal pronoun) modulates motor behaviour during and after language processing. A classical compatibility effect (the Action-sentence compatibility effect) has been used to this aim. In three behavioural experiments the authors investigated how the ACE is modulated by taking first or third person perspective. Results from these experiments showed that the ACE effect occurs only when a first-person perspective is activated by the sentences used as stimuli. Overall, the data from this thesis contributed to disentangle several aspects of how action organization is translated in language, and then reactivated during language processing. This constitutes a new contribution to the field, adding lacking information on how specific aspects such as goal and perspective are linguistically described. In addition, these studies offer a new point of view to understand the functional implications of the involvement of the motor system during language comprehension, specifically from the point of view of our social interactions.

Abstract:

Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to regulate the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and galaxies. The most direct evidence of AGN feedback is probably galactic outflows. This thesis addresses the link between SMBHs and their host galaxies from four different observational perspectives. First, I study the local correlation between black hole mass and the galactic halo potential (the MBH Vc relation) based on Very Large Array (VLA) HI observations of galaxy rotation curves. Although there is a correlation, it is no tighter than the well-studied MBH – σ* relation between the black hole mass and the potential of the galactic bulge, indicating that physical processes, such as feedback, could link the evolution of the black hole to the baryons in the bulge. In what follows, I thus search for galactic outflows as direct evidence of AGN feedback. Second, I use the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to observe a luminous obscured AGN that hosts an ionized galactic outflow and find a compact but massive molecular outflow that can potentially quench the star formation in 10

6 years. The third study extends the sample of known ionized outflows with new Magellan long-slit observations of 12 luminous obscured AGN. I find that most luminous obscured AGN (Lbol > 1046 ergs s–1) host ionized outflows on 10 kpc scales, and the size of the outflow correlates strongly with the luminosity of the AGN. Lastly, to capitalize on the power of modern photometric surveys, I experiment with a new broadband imaging technique to study the morphology of AGN emission line regions and outflows. With images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), this method successfully constructs images of the [OIII]λ5007 emission line and reveals hundreds of extended emission-line systems. When applied to current and future surveys, such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), this technique could open a new parameter space for the study of AGN outflows. In summary, through multi-phase and multi-scale galactic outflows, AGN feedback can link the growth of SMBHs with the evolution of galaxies.

Abstract:
In this thesis we investigate the structure formation and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of driven and active magnetic colloids. The interactions in our system were tuned in situ by using external fields, with the aim of finding novel approaches to drive and engineer these microparticles into a rich variety of microstructures. The colloids formed chains and clusters able to transport cargos, space-filling gels and self-healing crystals. Moreover, we demonstrated the bidirectional transport of paramagnetic particles on top of a structured magnetic substrate. Because of their associated length-scale, colloids are experimentally accessible with traditional optical microscope techniques. We analysed the data extracted from digital video microscopy and used such information to infer the particle dynamics. Colloids have been proven to be excellent model systems for structures across different length scales that are more difficult to observe, such as collections of atoms and molecules. Furthermore, they are helpful test-beds to investigate fluid dynamics at low Reynolds number and can form artificial micromachines that are essential for the realization of disparate functional tasks at the microscale.

Abstract:
The research identifies the circumstances that lead to a real decrease in stock prices of companies facing a negative credit rating announcement. In addition to an effort of structuring and comparing previous results, the theoretical contribution is to confirm and bring new lines of inquiry relating to the surplus informational announcements that is actually given by the rating agencies, for financial different players in the stock market. Based on a hypothetical-deductive approach, the study deals with 1 035 rating changes made by Standard and Poor's for 212 European listed companies over the 1998-2006 period. The results confirm asymmetry average reaction of European stock market and bring several deepenings. First, stock prices fluctuations, taken individually, seem to be negatives in only half the cases, but with a large magnitude. Secondly, the impact on the stock market following downgrades is high when the rating class is low and the number of notches is important. It is also more important if the degradation changes a rating starting with “A” to a rating starting with “B” and a rating in investment grade to a rating in speculative grade. The magnitude of the reaction would also depend on the size of the firm and the beta of its equity. Nevertheless, it is totally independent of the initial rating, the existence of a creditwatch, the downgrade justification, the importance of the financial markets and the financial context

Abstract:
Thermal and viscous forces compete for dominance at the microscopic length-scales which govern the behaviour of many soft or biological systems. We study three systems of increasing complexity with the central goal of understanding the statistical or hydrodynamic nature of their mechanics. First we study experiments that have been conducted on ferromagnetic colloidal rods. At equilibrium, the magnetically pinned rod is observed to randomly flip between two orientational states, which our theoretical analysis shows is due to a competition between entropic and Hamiltonian forces. We show analytically how entropic forces can arise by considering the coupling between observed and unobserved variables of a system. Experiments in which a rod is driven out of equilibrium by a rotating field display three phases of steady-state behaviour as a function of driving frequency. Using Brownian dynamics simulations we match the lower critical frequency to the experimentally obtained values, showing that thermal fluctuations play an important role in this regime and propose a simple argument to demonstrate that hydrodynamic interactions between the substrate and rod affect the upper critical frequency. We then turn to the biophysical topic of cell locomotion in viscoelastic media. In order to study how bacterial flagella interact with similarly-sized polymers in their environment, we construct a Stokesian dynamics model of a helical filament and bead--spring polymer. Simulating their interaction first for a pinned--rotating helix, then for a swimming helix, we demonstrate that large polymers become hydrodynamically entrained by the flagellum and coil around it, causing both pinned and swimming flagella to expend more work. For the swimming helix, this results in a reduction of swimming speed on average. Finally, we consider an active nematic fluid confined to a channel and show that the inclusion of a passive colloid induces a global state of coherent flow maintained by the intrinsic activity of the system. This flow is persistent, and transports the colloid with it along the channel. By this mechanism, a passive colloid is able to spontaneously induce its own transport through an otherwise quiescent fluid.

Abstract:

Today there are commercially available databases with active features, i.e. active mechanisms are available for development of information systems. But the usage of active mechanisms is low in practice. This is due to the insufficient methodological support in analysis and design for developing ECA rule based software. It has been proposed that one of the most suitable ways to tackle this problem is not to develop new methods but to extend existing methodologies.

In this thesis an extension of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT) is developed, called OMT-A, which is able to model active rules. The Active Database Management System Manifesto is used as a base for the refinements. OMT-A also supports an extensive set of event operators. Although the refined notation and the new, recommended steps, it is still possible to use OMT-A as if it is the original OMT.

OMT-A is compared with OMT and two other extensions of OMT. The comparison revealed some interesting differences, e.g. to what extent OMT has been changed. It also turned out that OMT-A is the only one of the three refined versions having an explicit focus on the dynamic modeling, which is an interesting contribution of this work

The purpose of this thesis is to create the character of Dabby Bryant in Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, which was selected for the third production in the University of New Orleans' 2004-2005 theatre season. The steps involved in creating Dabby Bryant's character involve using specific methods as outlined by the Acting Program of UNO as well as the text A Practical Handbook for the Actor by Melissa Bruder, et. al. I also utilized specific instructions from the director of the production, David Hoover, also my major professor. I also had to use the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally as this is the text from which the Wertenbaker play is taken. The process also includes the journal kept during the rehearsal process and performance run as well as scene scores created as a blueprint for the creation of the character.

Abstract:
This project explores the appropriation of images of political upheaval in contemporary art, with a particular focus on artists who painstakingly draw from photographs. It is a project informed by contemporary debates on the convoluted temporality and performativity of the image, the aesthetic and affective dimensions of political subjectification, and forms of political agency. The drawings of artists including Andrea Bowers, Fernando Bryce and Olivia Plender, discussed here, elaborate a piecemeal, meticulously-drawn iconography of protest. Photographs and documents of emancipatory political struggle from different periods and places are reworked by hand, in acts of salvage. Something like an affective atmosphere is limned in scenes and artefacts that may not have lost their capacity to move but nonetheless seem remote today, the collective political desire and will they evoke overwhelmed by the disconcerting vicissitudes of sociopolitical circumstance. In light of the long and complex histories of art’s engagement with the political, and the many and various modes of reciprocity devised along the way, what does it mean to be preoccupied with images of political action? To ask as much is to begin to address the complex ways in which such images intersect with and shape processes of political identification and affiliation, the emergence of collective subjectivity and the desire for political agency. Moreover, it is to speculate upon how these processes take place in a negotiation with the often obscure histories of collective action, and how such histories inform renewed efforts of political imagination. What attachments or detachment are played out in these drawings? What choreographies of binding and unbinding are traced in these lines?

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] The inclusion of a warm-up in the form of prior exercise (PE) is generally advocated as a preparatory strategy of choice to improve sprint performance. Although there is evidence that both increasing muscle temperature and mobilising the cardiorespiratory system prior to exercise contribute largely to the benefit of PE on sprint performance, their relative importance is unknown. Another important question relates to situations where an athlete has to engage in a sprint shortly after one or several earlier sprints. Under these conditions, is engaging in mild exercise also the most effective preparatory strategy to adopt prior to sprinting when performed after a previous sprint(s)? It was the primary aim of this thesis to address these questions. Firstly, we hypothesised that there is a temporal shift in the mechanisms responsible for the effect of PE on power output during a maximal sprint effort, with temperature-dependent mechanisms playing a more important role at the onset of the sprint and mobilisation of the cardiorespiratory system playing a more important role later. To test this hypothesis, we compared the responses of a 30-s sprint to different PE protocols designed to control for either muscle temperature or pre-exercise VO2. ... A group of trained athletes was subjected to four consecutive bouts of 30-s sprint, each separated by 20 min of either active recovery at 40% VO2 peak or passive recovery. Our results show that PP, MP-20 and MP-10 did not fall between the first and last sprints, and were not affected by active recovery. In contrast, we found that MP10 and MP30 decrease significantly between the first and last sprint of the passive recovery trial, but not when active recovery is performed between consecutive sprints. Finally, this study also showed that the fall in mean power associated with repeated 30-s sprints in the passive recovery trial resulted primarily from a fall in early, but not late power output. These findings show that the early and late mean power output of repeated sprints respond differently to active and passive recovery, with the decrease in total mean power with repeated 30-s sprints resulting primarily from a fall in early as opposed to either late power output or peak power, thus highlighting the benefit of active recovery as a favourable preparatory strategy for the performance of repeated sprints of short (<10s) or longer duration (<30s), but not for repeated peak power.

Abstract:
I surveyed members of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) and the Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) to assess the motivations of active and nonactive memebrs in these nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). I investigated the effects of social networks, competing commitments, requests for participation and the belief of the efficacy of their actions on decisions to become and remain active members. I found that requests are important tools for recruiting new members but not the determining factor in the decision to participate. Rather, in both NGOs, active members indicated that the efficacy of their actions was most important in their decisions, while nonactive members cited the importance of competing commitments. I also investigated what leads to burn out and attrition of active members. Burn out and attrition in active members often resulted from a lack of personal satisfaction and growth from contributions. Active members who had experienced burn out donated more hours, had been members and active longer, and in the RMEF needed more recognition than those members who had not experienced burn out. Volunteers who discontinued participation also cited age, health, and personal reasons, Recruitment and retention of volunteers may be aided by increasing the awareness of volunteer programs, ensuring the programs provide results that individuals are proud of, requesting the participation of individuals on both local and higher organizational levels, and recognizing volunteers for their contributions.
