Abstract:
In the turbulent context of interwar Polish politics, a period bookended by the right-wing nationalists’ repression of an ethnically heterogeneous state, several popular high-quality cabarets persisted in Warsaw even as they provoked and defied the nationalists’ harsh criticism. In their best, most influential incarnation, Qui pro Quo (1919–1932) and its successors, these literary cabarets violated the right’s value system through their shows’ insistent metropolitan focus, their stars’ role-modeling of immoral behavior and parodic impersonation, and their companies’ explicitly Jewish–Gentile collaboration. In the community of the cabaret, which was even more bohemian and déclassé than that of the legitimate theater, the social and ethnic antagonisms of everyday Warsaw society mattered relatively little. Writers and players bonded with each other, above all, in furious pursuit of fun, fortune, celebrity, artistic kudos, and putting on a hit show. This analysis details how the contents and stars of Qui pro Quo challenged right-wing values. Its shows advertised the capital as a sumptuous metropolis as well as a home to an eccentric array of plebeian and underworld types, including variations on the cwaniak warszawski enacted by comedian Adolf Dymsza. Its chief female stars—Zula Pogorzelska, Mira Zimińska, and Hanna Ordonówna—incarnated big-city glamour and sexual emancipation. Its recurring Jewish characters—Józef Urstein’s Pikuś and Kazimierz Krukowski’s Lopek—functioned as modern-day Warsaw’s everymen, beleaguered and bedazzled as they assimilated to city life. Qui pro Quo’s popular defense against an exclusionary nationalism showcased collaborative artistry and diverse, charismatic stars.

Melrose, Regalena G. "Self-efficacy and goal choice among acting-out adolescents." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=34525.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this study was to investigate self-efficacy and goal choice among acting-out adolescents in comparison to nonacting-out adolescents. One hundred and sixteen adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 participated. The adolescents were categorized as either acting-out or nonacting-out on the basis of their score on the Child Behavior Checklist-Teacher's Report Form (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1986), as well as on corroborated reports made by school administrators. Fifty-eight acting-out and 58 nonacting-out adolescents completed a questionnaire packet containing measures of self-efficacy, locus of control, self-mage, and goal choice. In addition, each adolescent was interviewed and administered a brief intelligence measure. With all demographic variables covaried, the primary findings of the study were that acting-out as compared to nonacting-out adolescents experienced more incidents of failure, displayed lower general self-efficacy scores, greater external loci of control, and chose goals that were vague or less specific. The negative experiences associated with behavioral problems, such as academic failure, apparently lower adolescents' self-beliefs and abilities to specify their goals. Despite their experiential differences, however, acting-out and nonacting-out adolescents displayed similar levels of social self-efficacy, real self-image, and ideal self-image, as well as similar goal setting abilities in areas other than goal specificity. All adolescents chose a comparable number of goals, as well as comparable levels of goal difficulty, goal commitment, and procedural knowledge. The stage of adolescence with its many changes, demands, and uncertainties apparently leaves most youths with comparable self-images and goal setting abilities, regardless of whether or not they have negative experiences of social and academic failure.

Abstract:
My thesis paper will address why I act and different aspects of my work as an actor. Acting training is a constant process and it is the job of the actor to keep up a regular routine that keeps one from going out of practice. I will discuss what I personally do regularly to stay in training. I will also discuss the process I go through to prepare myself to perform in acting roles. Though my approach to developing each new character is different, there are some aspects of my approach that remain constant. This paper will also describe the kinds of stories I am interested in telling. Though actors are equipped to tell a wide variety of stories from many different perspectives, I, as a Ghanaian female artist of color, am drawn to specific kinds of projects that relate to my life experiences. These are the stories that I feel compelled to tell. I believe my work is not just an occupation but rather encompasses the way I choose to live my life. So I will also discuss the ways in which I think my acting work is relevant in the world at large. I will include the ways in which I feel my work has had an impact in my environment, as well as how I hope to use my acting a vehicle to influence change in the future.

Chang, Li-Yu. "Acting it out : children learning English through story-based drama." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3128/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore why and how stories and drama can encourage children’s participation in class and also affect their learning of English as a foreign language in Taiwanese primary schools. The author takes a strong interest in both fields, English for Young Learners (EYL) and educational drama, and attempts to propose a solution, story-based drama, to two of the more common problems faced by teachers at primary level—mixed ability classes and limited teaching hours. The key methodological approach was action research in a case study format, using mixed methods and gathering quantitative as well as qualitative data in order to evaluate the impact of the author’s teaching on the children’s English learning. The quantitative research data was gathered with the aid of questionnaires responded to by one hundred and nine teachers and thirty-two fifth graders, while the qualitative data was collected from interviews, participant observation, fieldnotes, journals, artefacts, and video and audio recordings. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses revealed that the incorporation of stories and drama into the existing school curriculum was workable, and the story-based drama assisted the pupils to have greater participation in class and a higher degree of improvements than before in terms of their four language and non-verbal communication skills. This was corroborated by questionnaire results, interviewees’ responses, the co-teacher’s observations, and the pupils’ written work. The author recommends that a collaborative approach to curriculum design and research methodology could be adopted by teachers themselves or between teachers and researchers in order to stimulate more research on the use of story-based drama in similar contexts, while deepening our understanding of this resourceful teaching approach.

The aim of the present study was to understand the acting out of a group of adolescents from the psychoanalytic point of view. The objective was to examine if the "diagnostics group" technique applied to adolescents is efficient enough to make them aware of acting out phenomena and if it may be used to provide the appropriate means to understand actings implemented into the group. The chosen method was "applied psychoanalysis" that aims at practical results. Six adolescents between 13 and 14 years old of both genders participated in the research and the "diagnostics group" technique was applied to ten 90-minute meetings. Mathieu's (1967) "Contents Analysis" technique was adopted to analyze the collected data, which was then interpreted according to psychoanalytic and group-analytic references. The present study allowed us to understand acting out as a primitive process featuring archaic defense mechanisms, such as projection, dissociation, denial, disruption. In our group of adolescents, acting out occurred in two different ways, i.e., through communication and as an attack on group ties. As the meetings progressed, acting out decreased, which made us reflect on the importance of the group for those adolescents. We concluded that the group of adolescents acted on affective levels and that its members went through several situations of sensitization. Languages used were mainly symbolic, emotional, and marked by gestures. An atmosphere of cooperation between adolescents-colleagues was developed, which supported individual evolution. It was notable that the group technique applied to this research proved to be an efficient instrument to study the acting out of adolescents within the group.
Foi not?vel que a t?cnica de grupo praticada nesta pesquisa constituiu-se num instrumento eficaz para estudar o fen?meno do acting out do adolescente no grupo.

Abstract:
Abstract ROOTS – What Could Emerge Out of Thinking and Acting Networked ROOTS as Design?   This bachelor’s thesis uses ROOTS as a method designed to engage in both thinking and acting inside networks, by creating a hydroponic gardening network. As a designer one engages in many different fields of design. The most complicated design is designing networks with function, interlaced and embedded in everyday life. This is known as accountability, to be accountable to ones decisions and to act on many perspectives when designing. Accountability is designing from somewhere, and being aware of where that somewhere stems from. ROOTS visualizes accountability in a network, as accountability entails thinking and acting inside a network, and by doing so one actively engages in thinking about futures and design as a whole. When asking oneself what could emerge out of thinking and acting networked ROOTS as design, one begins to speculate in matters of vast networked complexity. From observation using methods such as ANT, the technologic extension T-ANT and also conducting a study in messiness, information is created and from the information, valuing becomes present, from valuing knowledge grows, from knowledge comes accountability and the network creates another cycle of ROOTS.   Keywords: Design, Network, Accountability, Complexity

Abstract:
For those who are just starting clinical practice, coming across a subject who self-cuts can be very disturbing. The gaze is summoned very poignantly. The question that guides this research is: in what way can the analytical device operate in the gaze/ speech/ psychic elaboration triad? To answer this, the focus of this work is based on the clinical material at our disposal. More precisely, we approached the act of self-cutting as it presents itself in neurotic subjects. As this act also appears in psychosis and perversion, further investigations are necessary. In Psychoanalysis, there is scant literature on this specific act to date, so we did a brief survey on the topic in Psychiatry, Anthropology, and Sociology. We also present the act of self-cutting in the context of media, as self-cutters use the internet and social networks as a means to anonymously bring to public notice their psychological distress. Using Freudian theory, we show the importance of coining the term \"act of self-cutting\" from a metapsychological point of view. Afterwards, we present two clinical cases where the concepts of anguish, acting-out and passage to the act, as seen by Freud and Lacan, became fundamental in conducting the analyzes of these clinical cases. With this, we hope to contribute to the expansion of the field of study on the subject

Abstract:
The cervix plays a critical role during pregnancy, acting as a mechanical barrier to keep the fetus inside the uterus until term. In a normal pregnancy, it is hypothesized that the cervix gradually softens until uterine contractions occur. At this point, the cervix dramatically ripens and dilates for delivery. Similar to other collagenous tissues, the extracellular matrix (ECM) is the load-bearing component of cervical tissue. It is composed mainly of a cross-linked network of fibril forming collagen, types I and III, embedded in a viscous proteoglycan ground substance. Studies conducted on animal models suggest that during normal maturation, a shift in ECM components facilitate cervical softening. However, quantitative cervical softness measurements (i.e. material properties) of these previous studies are ill-defined, limiting the comparative ability of the outcome values. Therefore, our goal is to quantify sensitive and specific time-dependent material properties utilizing mouse models of normal and abnormal pregnancy. Our aim is to discern the role of ECM maintenance in cervical softening.

Abstract:
Abstract This comparative study investigated wave-induced impact loads acting on two aligned cylinders placed in a wave canal. Initially, loads acting on a single cylinder in a focused wave were experimentally measured to validate the associated numerical predictions. Subsequently, four scenarios were considered, of which the first scenario dealt with the direct calculation of loads on a single cylinder, albeit with cylinders of three different diameters. The second scenario considered two cylinders of the same diameter, which were implemented in tandem. The loads acting on the upstream and downstream cylinders were calculated directly considering the wake effects on the downstream cylinder. For the third scenario, both cylinders were removed, and the loads on the downstream cylinder were determined using the Morison equation. In the fourth scenario, only the downstream cylinder was removed to examine whether loads on the downstream cylinder can be approximated using the Morison equation. Employing an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations solver coupled with the volume of fluid (VoF) method, flow velocities were computed at different height positions corresponding to the location of the missing downstream cylinder in scenarios three and four, and these velocities were used in the Morison equation. Flow accelerations were derived from flow velocities using the central difference scheme. These load predictions enabled finding out how well the Morison equation is able to provide useful load predictions even in the presence of wake effects. Wake effects of the front cylinder on the loads acting on the rear cylinder were computed and analyzed. It turned out that maximum impact loads were favorably predicted using the Morison equation, even for the scenario that considered wake effects. However, the timely evolution of these loads after impact differed from comparable measurements.

Abstract:
Load-out operation is one of the important processes for Spar construction and transportation. The Spar is towed onto the deck of a semi-barge, supported by special cradles during the whole process. Variation in weight distribution of the Spar, tidal changes, the barge draft level and positioning are main factors that affect the consistence of the barge deck and the dock surface, which will induce the Spar to sustain vertical bending moments and shear force. Transverse wind acting on the Spar also forms a slight transverse shift of the barge deck, which will induce the Spar to suffer horizontal bending moments. Nevertheless, structural components of the Spar are not allowed to endure any plastic deformations or buckling. So, the ultimate loading condition should be determined and the weakest structural components during the load-out process should also be ascertained. A truss Spar is chosen as the objective, and twenty steps are defined for the load-out process. The code SESAM is used to do the analysis. A finite element model is made, consists of the whole Spar and the cradle frames, which also take part in the load-out process. Two groups of load cases are defined. The initial forced displacement is applied on the cradle, simulating the difference between the deck and the dock surface. The initial forced displacement can be modified to the state when the Spar structural components endure ultimate elastic load. On the transverse wind condition, the initial forced displacement is modified in the same way introduced above. By the analysis results, two envelope curves for the vertical force applying on the barge are obtained, to provide guidance for the operation. The stresses and the internal forces of the Spar structural components are summarized, on purpose of giving the flexural performance and the shearing stress condition of the Spar during the load-out process. The ultimate elastic loads can be obtained for each of the twenty steps, and the characteristic of every ultimate elastic load cases is concluded. According to elastic-plastic theory, affordable displacement between barge deck and dock surface is obtained.

Abstract:
The hydrodynamic forces exerted on a pipeline partially buried in a permeable seabed subjected to combined random oscillatory flow are investigated experimentally. The tests were carried out in a re-circulating flume that can generate steady currents, oscillatory flow and combined flow, known as the O-tube. The performance of the testing facility was validated against published experimental data under regular oscillatory flow conditions. Four tests with different embedment depths, under random oscillatory flow conditions were then carried out. The flow velocity, hydrodynamic pressure around the model pipe and pore pressure in the soil were monitored. The hydrodynamic forces were calculated through pressure integration around the model pipe. The hydrodynamic force reduction due to embedment was compared with the model given in the most widely-used pipeline stability design guideline, DNV-RPF109. A horizontal load reduction of 55% was found for the fully buried pipe, which was lower than the 70% reduction suggested by DNV-RP-F109. The variation of the vertical hydrodynamic load with embedment ratio (embedment depth to pipe diameter) was also found to be different from the model suggested by DNV-RP-F109. It was found the fully buried pipe experienced a large vertical force, even higher than that of the fully exposed pipe, under low KC number conditions.

Abstract:
Offshore wind turbines have been investigated and developed as one of the renewable energies. In Japan, the research and development of floating type offshore wind turbines have been carried out because the water around the country is too deep to settle the bottom mounted type. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the diameter of the column floater of the advanced spar in regular wave by using open source computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM. We use olaFOAM which equipped with the functions to set the boundary conditions of wave generation at the inlet and wave absorption at the outlet. The forces acting on a spar obtained by the numerical simulation and Morison’s equation are compared to examine the validity of the numerical model. A good agreement between them confirms the validity of the numerical method. Then we simulate numerically the effects of the column diameter on the flow around the advanced spars and the wave load. The result clarifies that Morison’s equation overestimates the wave force, and the difference increases with the column diameter. For more detailed analysis we divide the advanced spar into three parts, the upper spar above the column, the column floater and the lower spar below the column. As a result, we find that the difference between the wave load acting on the column by Morison’s equation and that by numerical simulation is dominant due to the flow separation around the column. Finally we modify the load coefficients of Morison’s equation for the column so that the modified equation can accurately evaluate the wave load acting on the advanced spar.

Abstract:
The train overturning risk associated to strong crosswinds can be reduced by putting wind break fences along the line. This paper proposes a procedure to determine the loads acting on the barriers, starting from CFD analysis, experimental wind tunnel tests and standards requirements. In particular, two external action on the fences are considered: the pressure loads induced by the passage of the train and the loads due to the natural wind. Static and dynamic loads have been analyzed. Through the definition of extreme events both static and fatigue verification have been carried out on the structure.

Full text
Abstract:
An estimation of the wave drift forces acting on a semi-submersible type Mega-float supported by very many columns is very important in order to design its mooring system. It is known that the wave drift forces acting on a train of multiple vertical circular cylinders may be determined using the potential flow theory. However, it has recently been reported that the large wave drift forces acting on a large scale model of a semi-submersible type Mega-float, comprised of many simple circular cylinders, for long wave periods, cannot be explained by the potential flow theory. In addition the forces seem to have a significant influence on the design of its mooring system. At first, it seemed that the measured forces were viscous drift forces. The viscous drift forces are in proportion to the square of the wave particle velocity or the cube of the wave height. Of course, the existence of viscous drift forces has already been established, but it was considered that the forces acting are conditional in that the flow is apt to shed, for example on complex under-water shapes, on radiation problem, in larger height or longer period waves. Also it was thought that the forces acting on simple circular cylinders were negligibly small from the viewpoint of engineering applications. Finally, it was not accurately verified that the forces were viscous drift forces. In this study, model tests were carried out. The wave loads acting on a 16-column platform model and the hydrodynamic forces acting on each column of the model were simultaneously measured. The contribution of the viscous drift force component on the wave drift force acting on a train of vertical circular cylinders was also investigated in detail. It was confirmed that significant viscous drift forces act on circular cylinders for long wave periods. Furthermore an applicable region of viscous and potential components of the wave drift forces acting on vertical circular cylinders was obtained.

Grant, Charles. Diaphragm Walls as Permanent Basement Walls in Regions of High Seismicity. Deep Foundations Institute, June 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.37308/cpf-2012-slwl-1.

Full text
Abstract:
Reinforced concrete structural slurry walls have been used in the United States since the early 1960s. The typical practice, and one that makes the economics of slurry walls particularly attractive, is to design the walls to act as both temporary excavation support and permanent basement walls. They often serve as multi-story basements and below grade parking for buildings, for tunnels, subway stations, and other buried structures. One of the early applications was for a foundation for a subway station in San Francisco, but for the most part they have been used more extensively in regions of low seismicity. The purpose of this report is to investigate the requirements for extension of this practice to more common use in regions of high seismicity. Structural slurry walls are concrete walls constructed below the ground surface. In slurry wall construction, a trench is excavated using a rectangular clamshell bucket or other specialized equipment. During excavation, the trench is held open by introduction of a bentonite or polymer slurry. Steel reinforcement, if required, is lowered into the slurry-filled trench, and concrete is subsequently deposited by tremie, displacing the slurry. The length of trench open at any one time is limited to a typical maximum of about 20 to 24 feet by excavation stability and concrete placement volume considerations. Each individual concrete placement is referred to as a “panel,” and vertical construction joints separate the panels. Temporary “end-stops” are used as formwork to control the geometry of the panel joints, and horizontal reinforcement is discontinuous at the joints. Structural slurry panels range from 1.5 to 5.0 feet thick, 7 to 24 feet long, and up to 300 feet deep. In the United States, panels that are 2.0 to 3.5 feet thick and depths of 40 to 150 feet are commonplace. Structural basement walls support earth pressures acting laterally against the wall, dead and live loads acting vertically, and in-plane shear and flexure from wind and earthquake loads. The design of permanent slurry walls in regions of low or moderate seismicity is often limited to providing the strength necessary to resist out-of-plane soil pressures and vertical dead and live loads from the superstructure and basement framing. Although these walls also transfer in-plane lateral forces from the superstructure into the soils, the walls are often not specifically designed for these in-plane forces because their inherent strength is usually much greater than the forces being transferred. If resistance to in-plane forces acting on a wall required an increase in vertical reinforcement at the ends of a wall segment, an increase in the cap beam strength, or an increase in the horizontal reinforcement for shear strength, the overall design and construction approach would not vary significantly from current practice. Structural slurry walls have been used to a limited extent for buildings designed for high seismic risk, but there is reluctance on the part of design engineers to use them more often because of concern for how to design these walls to resist in-plane lateral forces, lack of code provisions for reinforcement detailing, and damage that may occur at panel joints. For buildings designed for high seismic risk, such as those assigned to Seismic Design Categories (SDC) D, E, and F as defined in Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7-10), in-plane shear and flexural actions may likely require modifications of a structural slurry wall only designed for out-of-plane soil pressures and vertical live and dead loads. Design would need to address in-plane lateral forces acting on structural slurry walls and the interaction of the in-plane actions with the out-of-plane and vertical actions. These issues are discussed in this report, and approaches to design for high seismic risk are presented.

Abstract:
Since 2020, the richest five men in the world have doubled their fortunes. During the same period, almost five billion people globally have become poorer. Hardship and hunger are a daily reality for many people worldwide. At current rates, it will take 230 years to end poverty, but we could have our first trillionaire in 10 years. This report shows how a huge concentration of global corporate and monopoly power is exacerbating inequality economy-wide. Seven out of ten of the world’s biggest corporates have either a billionaire CEO or a billionaire as their principal shareholder. Through squeezing workers, dodging tax, privatizing the state and spurring climate breakdown, corporations are driving inequality and acting in the service of delivering ever-greater wealth to their rich owners. To end extreme inequality, governments must radically redistribute the power of billionaires and corporations back to ordinary people. A more equal world is possible if governments effectively regulate and reimagine the private sector.

Abstract:
About 29 percent of teenagers are bullied at school in the Caribbean. Victims of bullying are more lonely, sleep less, and have fewer friends than do their nonbullied peers. Although victims of bullying eat more frequently at fast food restaurants, they also experience more periods of hunger than do nonbullied children. Acting out with the goal of being considered a "cool" teenager does not work; even if adolescents frequently smoke cigarettes, bullies may still intimidate and harass them. The opposite is true for virgins. Good parenting can, however, make a difference in preventing a child from being a victim of bullying. Growing international evidence has shown that school-based programs can reduce the prevalence of bullying and that bullying has long-term negative consequences into adult life (for both bullies and victims).

Abstract:
It calls on UK Government to publish, with urgency, a Safe and Healthy Mobility Strategy and Action Plan for roads and civic spaces across the UK that is based on Safe System solutions; and for Government to place this strategy and action plan at the heart of its transport policy decisions to save people and the planet. This report proposes goals, work areas, and priority actions for the strategy and action plan. Safe and healthy mobility means we get around on roads and around our civic spaces (the spaces between our buildings) in ways that: prevent death and serious injury from road crashes; prevent death and illness from air pollution and inactivity; and achieve decarbonisation to tackle the climate crisis. We enable people to move around in active ways (walking, cycling) and we enable the safe, clean, and green use of vehicles too; to move our goods, deliver services, or move people, including by public transport.
