Abstract:
In this paper I will argue that learner variation in second language acquisition poses a potentially serious problem for the successful design and application of CALL and ICALL software'. Whereas a teacher is able to use direct and immediate feedback from students to adapt to different learning styles, rates of progress and acquisition paths, the possibilities of computer software are much more limited.

Abstract:
Currently, software acquisition is strategic for organizations. Companies need support to succeed in software acquisition projects because such projects commonly present high failure rates. To solve this problem, it is necessary to design mechanisms for software acquisition, such as risk classification to identify the typical risks that may affect the success of a software acquisition project. Thus, herein, we present a case study, showing the implementation of a risk taxonomy whose structure is designed using a method for its construction, with a mechanism to reduce the risk of acquisition projects that adversely affect their success.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study investigates the impact that software utilization may have on students' knowledge acquisition of the accounting cycle. Differences in knowledge acquisition are examined between three groups of students: those who completed an accounting case manually using the traditional pencil and paper approach, using software, and first manually and then using software. The main research question is: “To what extent does using computers to study the accounting cycle lead to better knowledge acquisition?” This paper aims to inform changes in accounting education. Design/methodology/approach – The survey method was employed to collect information from accounting students in a Canadian business school. A total of 1,053 usable questionnaires were returned. Declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge are the theoretical underpinnings. Findings – The results indicate that students who first completed the case manually and then completed the same case using accounting software experienced the best knowledge acquisition. This suggests that the best manner for students to acquire concrete knowledge of the accounting cycle is by completing cases using both methods. The results also indicate that students who completed the case using only the software experienced better knowledge acquisition than did students who completed the case only manually. This suggests that software can be effectively utilized and integrated in class to improve knowledge acquisition of accounting information systems. Originality/value – Little investigation has been performed on the usefulness and impact accounting software utilization may have on students' level of learning. The findings may benefit students and faculty members by helping in curriculum design changes, course design, and computer implementation decisions. The findings of this study have the potential to make a difference in the way that educators teach and business students learn. Business education may be improved by the judicious use of software in the classroom.

No longer are biologists content to peer through the oculars of a microscope. Eyes have been replaced by digital cameras. Instead of manual control of microscope stages, filters and light sources, modern microscopes have become fully robotic. Image acquisition and robotic movements require computer control. With such equipment it is possible to automatically record images at multiple wavelengths, carry out time-lapse recordings of living cells using very short exposure times and low light doses, and even to record images at multiple positions (e.g. from a multi-well plate) without operator intervention. Clearly, computer control of light microscope image acquisition is making many new experimental imaging strategies possible in the biological sciences.

Abstract:
Abstract The University of Nevada Seismological Laboratory operates an array of 60 analog short-period and 10 three-component digital telemetered seismic stations, 90 data traces in all, in Nevada and eastern California. Formerly, the seismic data streams were recorded and processed on three separate computers running disparate software and writing incompatible data formats which made access to the digital data quite cumbersome. These systems were recently replaced by a single computer system, a MicroVAX II running VAX/VMS, together with Generic CUSP (Caltech -U.S.G.S. Seismic Processing System), a controlled software system from the U.S.G.S. in Menlo Park. Telemetered digital data are stored simultaneously in two ways, unique to this network. First, these digital data are brought asynchronously into the computer using a standard direct-memory access interface and recorded continuously on an Exabyte 8-mm helical-scan tapedrive. Second, the digital data are passed through a D to A converter and intermixed with the incoming analog data stream used for routine network processing. This analog data stream is then itself digitized and presented to the computer. In this way, calibrated digital waveforms are available in the routine data processing stream, now entirely comprised of digital waveforms, used to locate earthquakes. At the same time, this allows easy access to these data in research applications involving the processing of seismic waveforms.

Abstract:

Computer software has come to replace the manual form of designing in both architectural education and practice. The use of drawing boards had been employed in architectural education and practice for a long time. Since the first half of the twentieth century, computer hardware and corresponding software have seen dramatic change and development manufactured and tailored to meet the demand of changing technological and human needs. Architecture has had its fair share since the advent of computers and has seen major milestone changes in its integration into the profession. In the last century, architectural education in Ghana has also witnessed this revolution. From the year 2000 and thereon since Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) was introduced in the Department of Architecture (DOA) in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) there has been tremendous improvement in the CAAD tools used in architectural design education. There is therefore the need to evaluate the CAAD software used by the students and faculty. This paper looked at the existence and the mode in which CAAD software is applied in the department, the predominant software used by students and the mode of acquisition of the software. The findings proved that CAAD is taught as part of the curriculum in the DOA and has helped improve architectural design education over the years. However, the full potential and benefit of CAAD use has not been realized as a result of challenges faced by students and faculty in teaching, learning and acquisition of software.

It requires three essential components: 1) data acquisition system that provides the computer with high-quality data on line, 2) computer and software able to analyze the incoming data in real time, and 3) control links that enable the computer to adjust the important microscope parameters. An optimized system architecture is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The microscope is equipped with various microprocessors that control its hardware, and provide data processing abilities devoted to different types of signals (e.g., X-ray spectra). These microprocessors use a standardized communication protocol to communicate over a standard network (such as AppleTalk or Ethernet) with a “master computer”, which provides the user interface, as well as the computing power necessary to handle the most demanding tasks.

Abstract:
Computer-assisted learning can be an efficient learning-teaching procedure. Although there is an extensive educational software tradition for this approach, few have better performance than standard drill-and-practice methods. In this work, the specific software “Let's Play With …” was designed to teach concepts of colours, shapes, and body position to children with intellectual disabilities. The software structure follows the Gagné instructional design and applied behaviour analysis. The program was carried out with 39 boys and 21 girls who were special education students in the Cadiz School District. Statistically significant differences were found between groups taught with and without the software.

Abstract:
The objectification of pulse diagnosis is very important to the development and inheritance of TCM, the first step is how to collect more abundant and comprehensive pulse information quickly, reduce the threshold of users for using pulse diagnosis equipment. The existing pulse diagnosis equipment has some limitations, such as single acquisition site, complex compression form and serious dependence on professionals for correcting-pulse position selection. Therefore, a three-pulse diagnosis system based on flexible sensor is designed, which uses a new type of flexible sensor as the data acquisition port, combined with upper computer software and lower computer software to achieve goals of intelligent decompression and data acquisition from Cun, Guan, Chi. The equipment not only greatly reduces the difficulty for users to find correct pulse position identification, but also collect non-destructive pulse information, which provides a new acquisition mode for the pulse diagnosis instrument.

Abstract:
The recent commercial introduction of the parallel detection electron energy-loss spectrometer has undoubtedly made electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) more viable as a technique for routine microanalysis. Additionally, the increased recording efficiency of parallel EELS (PEELS) warrants the use of more involved acquisition and processing techniques than was necessary, or even possible with serial EELS. This increased complexity places greater demands on the computer systems controlling data acquisition. Multichannel analyzers systems with small resources and limited programming facilities are not capable of exploiting the full capabilities of the PEELS spectrometer.Preliminary efforts of the author with the Gatan PEELS spectrometer were concentrated on development of a flexible acquisition system at National Institutes of Health. Hardware control is performed through machine-language drivers called from high-level languages (HLL) such as FORTRAN and C. The software drivers and hardware were designed to minimize processor involvement in the data collection process, resulting in the capability to collect data while processing continues within the parent HLL. This design simplifies the HLL program structure and minimizes data collection dead time.

AbstractA conventional semi-automated powder X-ray diffractometer that was previously equipped with a strip chart recorder for data acquisition has been interfaced to an HP 1000 minicomputer via an analog-to-digital converter. Data acquisition and analysis is now accomplished using CALS chromatographic software and two in-house-developed FORTRAN 77 computer programs. This has resulted in significant improvements in experimental repeatability and accuracy, decreased sample turn-around times, and rapid and facile analysis, manipulation, and comparison of crystallographic data.

Abstract:
The development of personal computers increases the options available for electron probe microanalysis. Hardware and software are now available for personal computers which make it feasible to use them to acquire, process, and analyze x-ray spectra. One advantage of a personal computer (PC) based system is the low cost--approximately 20% of the cost of other options. A second advantage is that a system can be developed which is tailored to the needs of the laboratory, so that experimental questions asked of the data can dictate procedures for data acquisition and processing. We have developed a PC-based system for electron probe microanalysis, which we use for data acquisition, processing, and analysis of frozen and freeze-dried biological samples. X-ray spectra may be acquired either for spot analysis or for elemental images. Spectra acquired from large areas of the frozen, hydrated sample are used together with spectra from the freeze-dried specimen to calculate concentrations relative to sample wet weight.

Abstract:
This article presents an epistemological reading of knowledge evolution in software engineering (SE) both within a software project and into SE theoretical frameworks principally modeling languages and software development life cycles (SDLC). The article envisages SE as an artificial science and notably points to the use of iterative development as a more adequate framework for the enterprise applications. Iterative development has become popular in SE since it allows a more efficient knowledge acquisition process especially in user intensive applications by continuous organizational modeling and requirements acquisition, early implementation and testing, modularity,… SE is by nature a human activity: analysts, designers, developers and other project managers confront their visions of the software system they are building with users’ requirements. The study of software projects’ actors and stakeholders using Simon’s bounded rationality points to the use of an iterative development life cycle. The later, indeed, allows to better apprehend their rationality. Popper’s knowledge growth principle could at first seem suited for the analysis of the knowledge evolution in the SE field. However, this epistemology is better adapted to purely hard sciences as physics than to SE which also takes roots in human activities and by the way in social sciences. Consequently, we will nuance the vision using Lakatosian epistemology notably using his falsification principle criticism on SE as an evolving science. Finally the authors will point to adaptive rationality for a lecture of SE theorists and researchers’ rationality.

Abstract:
The undesirable resistance-capacitance (RC) distortion coming from the exponential moving averaging process of a boxcar integrator/averager acquisition system in kinetic and spectral luminescence measurements could be effectively eliminated by interfacing it to a microcomputer. Accurate acquisition of luminescence decay curves and time-resolved spectra was provided by a developed software that allows synchronous scan control of the gate delay time in the boxcar integrator with the emission wavelength in the monochromator. Some simple mathematical calculation routines, including excited-state lifetime extraction from luminescence decay curves and normalization of time-resolved spectra, were added. The main characteristics of both the software and the interfacing hardware are reported.

Abstract:
Geoinformation technologies are now becoming “end-to-end” technologies of the new digital economy. There is a need for solutions for efficient processing of spatial and spatio-temporal data that could be applied in various sectors of this new economy. Such solutions are necessary, for example, for cyberphysical systems. Essential components of cyberphysical systems are high-performance and easy-scalable data acquisition systems based on smart geosensor networks. This article discusses the problem of choosing a software environment for this kind of systems, provides a review and a comparative analysis of various open source software environments designed for large spatial data and spatial-temporal data streams processing in computer clusters. It is shown that the software framework STARK can be used to process spatial-temporal data streams in spatial-temporal data streams. An extension of the STARK class system based on the type system for spatial-temporal data streams developed by one of the authors of this article is proposed. The models and data representations obtained as a result of the proposed expansion can be used not only for processing spatial-temporal data streams in data acquisition systems based on smart geosensor networks, but also for processing spatial-temporal data streams in various purposes geoinformation systems that use processing data in computer clusters.
