Abstract:
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome is a new infectious human disease. The disease was first registered in the United States in 1981 and immediately became the focus of attention of specialists (clinicians, immunologists, virologists) and the public. Currently, AIDS is a problem of global significance that is discussed at WHO meetings, scientific conferences and in the press. For example, the Kazan Medical Journal was the first in our country to publish a literature review on AIDS that was of interest to a wide range of physicians.

Seaton, George Merle. "Views of school superintendents on schools and acquired immune deficiency syndrome." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77833.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to describe the personal views of superintendents and their opinions of their school boards' views in regard to schools and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The population for this study included the superintendents identified by a panel of jurors, on the basis of reputational excellence, for inclusion in"The Executive Educator 100" and published in the February 1987 issue of the Executive Educator. The study utilized survey research methodology to address the following questions: what are the personal views of superintendents, what are the relationships between these views and certain demographic characteristics and what are the relationships between the superintendents' responses and their opinion of their school boards' views? Eight items were identified on which superintendents were most evenly divided in their response. These items included the following statements: the current curriculum was sufficient for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the causality and nature of AIDS, schools should be responsible for the shaping of attitudes and responses of students to the possibility of transmission of AIDS, schools should provide counseling for family members of student AIDS victims, an AIDS education inservice program should be mandatory for all certificated personnel, the school curriculum should specifically address the moral and values issues associated with AIDS, students with AIDS should be excluded from participation in contact sports programs, persons with AIDS should not be protected by Federal antidiscrimination legislation, and district policies should not differentiate between AIDS and any other communicable disease or virus. Superintendent response was found to be affected by respondents' sex, promotion to the superintendency, the identification of AIDS as an issue affecting schools, years experience in education, community description of district served, race, district enrollment size and whether or not the respondent had participated in an AIDS information workshop. There was a high degree of concurrence between the superintendents' views and their beliefs of their school boards' views regarding schools and AIDS. Only the issues of condom distribution in schools indicated an anticipated conflict in opinion.

Fountain, Renee-Marie. "A study of grade six student images, concerns, questions and knowledge about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29713.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines rural, pre-adolescent student images, concerns, questions and knowledge about the disease Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). A secondary objective is to determine if responses are influenced by gender. A qualitative survey was administered to six classes of Grade 6 students (n = 131), within two public education districts in the province of British Columbia. Student participants had no previous formal AIDS education instruction. Pupil images, concerns, questions and knowledge concerning AIDS are investigated by means of open-ended, survey questions requiring both pictorial and written responses. The study is designed, conducted and analyzed from a generative learning theory perspective. By ascertaining specific student concerns surrounding AIDS it is hoped that educators will be able to design AIDS curriculum that is both developmentally appropriate for and conceptually befitting to early adolescent needs.

Abstract:
The major purpose of this study was to ascertain the opinions of school board members about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as it relates to the curriculum of America's public schools and employment and other policies governing those schools. The presence of the AIDS virus in the general population presents school board members throughout the nation with potentially volatile choices to be made about dealing with this infectious disease in the public school setting. In addition to the opinion survey, data were also gathered from this national sample of school board members about practices already in place related to sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS. Descriptive research methodology was utilized in this study. A nationwide sample of school board members was identified from the list of subscribers of The American School Board Journal using a stratified random sampling technique. Of the approximately 25,000 subscribers who are school board members, the researcher surveyed an 18% random sample by means of a mailed questionnaire. The study was sponsored by The American School Board Journal, published by the National School Boards Association, the national professional organization for school board members in the United States.

Abstract:
This study describes and compares the results of a survey of 53 masters of social work students to determine the nature and extent to which their educational preparation included instruction on acquired immune deficiency syndrome and sexually transmitted diseases. The study also assessed the social work students' attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS and STDs, as well as their attitudes toward the role of social work education and the profession in addressing the HIV/AIDS and STD epidemics. To obtain this purpose the investigator developed a 56-item questionnaire. One of five hypotheses generated was accepted. Results showed that social work students need to increase their exposure to HIV/AIDS and STD related issues.

Abstract:
Persons with AIDS have joined the ranks of the homeless as a result of housing evictions and loss of employment. For many of them, shelters are their only viable option. However, persons with AIDS have received negative treatment in shelters from shelter workers who are fearful of catching the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of AIDS education and training on three dimensions: knowledge, fear and moral judgement. This study examined the responses of 40 shelter directors and service providers to the Shelter Director.s and Service Providers Survey immediately before and after a 60 minute educational program on AIDS. Survey respondents, representing 55 shelters in Atlanta, GA, were primarily black females ranging in ages 20 to 65. Ttests and frequency analysis were computed for each of the dimensions. Results showed no significant differences between pre and posttest scores on all dimensions. Implications for shelter directors and social workers are also included.

Abstract:
Immune thrombocytopenia has been recognized as a major hematologic manifestation associated with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) and AIDS-related complexes. The mechanism of thrombocytopenia in human immune deficiency virus infection is probably multifactorial.. The role of platelet-associated immuno-globulin(PAIgG)and circulating immune complexes(CIC) in mediating thrombocytopenia is controversial.. We experienced a case in which immune thrombocytopenia in AIDS-related complexes resolved during herpes zoster infection. A 37 y.o. white homosexual male with AIDS-related complexes and thrombocytopenia presented a 4-day history of painful, violaceous, non-pruritic vesicles which started on the right arm and hand, which then progressed to the chest wall, abdomen, back, and left arm. Peripheral lymphadenop-athy and splenomegaly was not noted. On admission WBG 13.5 Hct 40.8, platelet 46,000, Tzanck smear of vesicles revealed herpetic type giant cells. HTLV-III pos., Helper/suppressor T-cell ratio 0.3, Total protein 7.9 gm%, . Alb 3.95gm% IgG 1740 mg%, IgA 157 mg IgM 91.2 mg, Monospot neg., HBsAg Neg., HBsAb pos., HBcAb pos., VDRL neg. Before this admission, immune thrombocytopenia was documented by increased levels of PAIgG, CIC, bone marrow magakaryocytic hyperplasia, peripheral thrombocytopenia with giant platelets, absence of splenomegaly, and response to prednisone. He was treated with Acyclovir 250 mg/m2 1-hr infusion Q8h for 9 days ;to control the spread of his herpes infection. Recovery of thrombocytopenia wasobserved during herpes zo.ster infection. The platelet count rose to 158,000 and sustained over 4- weeks. Duringnormalization of platelet count thelevel of GIC (assayed by Raji cells, reference ranges, less than 12) droppedfrom 300 to less than 12 and PAIgG(fluorescence-activated flow cytometric assay, reference ranges, less than 1.5 RF) was markedly decreased from 90 to 2.9 When herpes infection had subsided the platelet count again decreased. These findings suggestthat PAIgG and GIG were contributing factors to immune thrombocytopenia and that herpes viral infection and Acyclovir altered this immunologically mediated thrombocytopenia in AIDS-related complexes.

Abstract:
Less than 15 years ago the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute surveyed physicians in the United States in order to characterize the demographics of hemophilia. The average age of persons with hemophilia in the United States was found to be 11.5 years old. By 10 years later, the life expectancy was predicted to be normal, and indeed the average age of persons with hemophilia in the U.S. is now in the early twenties. Early, intensive and predictably efficacious control of hemorrhage has made this result possible, and the therapeutic product which has allowed such control is commercial clotting factor concentrate. We now know that starting in 1978, and with great frquency during 1982 and 1983, the majority of U.S. hemophiliacs were infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is estimated that as of January, 1987, approximately two thirds of the 20,000' persons with hemophilia in the United States have been infected with HIV. Among those with severe factor VIII deficiency, more than 9056 are seropositive. As of 1/5/87, there were 288 cases of AIDS among U.S. hemophiliacs, for an AIDS rate of approximately 2.256 of those with HIV infection. This number included 185 with severe, 32 with moderate and 28 with mild hemophilia A; 12 with severe, 6 with moderate and 1 with mild hemophilia B; 9 with vWD, and 4 others. A disproportionate number were older patients: 55 were ages 1-19; 62 ages 20-29; 85 ages 30-39, and 86 age 40 or older. Although the AIDS attack rate is no longer climbing logarhythmically, new cases are certainly still occurring.A variety of other HIV-related syndromes have emerged. Of great concern is immune thrombocytopenia, which is now relatively common; among a group of 209 carefully followed HIV-positive patients at our center, 31 (1556) are or have been thrombocytopenic. Progressive failure to normally gain height and weight in children with hemophilia has recently been shown by our group to correlate with HIV antibody positivity, and also with decreased T4/T8 ratio, decreased T4 cell count, decreased skin test reactivity, and subsequent development of ARC or AIDS in some such children. Finally, a picture of progressive fall in T4 count associated with recurrent non-specific infections and increased likelihood of positive viral culture, may predict an increased risk of developing AIDS.We know that the immune dysfunction in hemophilia is complex, and not wholly explained by HIV infection. One important factor may be the many foreign proteins contained in commercial clotting factor concentrates, and their ability to stimulate T cells. It is known that latent HIV infection in cultured T4 lymphocytes can be induced to enter the proliferative, viral secretory phase by the addition of soluble foreign antigens to the cell culture. Recent data of Brettler and colleagues, to be presented at this meeting, suggest that the use of highly purified VI!I:C (specific activity >3000 u/mg) in place of the present extremely impure products, may improve the immune dysfunction in hemophilia. This observation offers a new hypothetical approach to the prevention of progressive T4 cell depletion in HIV infected hemophiliacs, and requires immediate and extensive further study. The psychosocial burden of HIV infection is immense. The need for extensive, formal education and support programs is largely unmet in most parts of the world. Such programs are best run out of hemophilia treatment centers in most cases, and must include an active program on prevention of sexual transmission, provision of HIV testing before and during pregnancies, provision for maintenance of confidentiality, etc. Education concerning HIV is like all other forms of education. It requires formal organization, a curriculum, active rather than passive learning in which there is interaction between the teacher and the pupil, time for planned repetition, reinforcement with written materials, and assessment of goals achieved. For all of these reasons it is inappropriate to assume that the physician at the hemophilia center will be able to provide an adequate education program. Adquate paramedical personnel will need to undertake this effort, under the directjon of the physician.

Abstract Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the "Lentivirus" family of retroviruses, called HIV-1. This syndrome is defined as an infectious disease of viral origin, with its manifestation interspersed in peaks and troughs, with a pathophysiology involving the compromising of the immune system, causing the defense system to not operate correctly, leaving the patient susceptible to the development of infections.

Objective: to elucidate possible neurological changes caused by AIDS, as well as to review in the literature the physiotherapeutic role in neurological disorders in people living with HIV / AIDS associated with Neurotoxoplasmosis. Method: Literature revision, using the following databases: VHL (Virtual Health Library), Scielo (A Scientific Electronic Library Online), PubMed (National Library of Medicine), PEDro (Physiotherapy Evidence Database), MEDLINE ( Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online). Articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria. Results: A scarce number of scientific articles was observed in the databases on the subject, corresponding to 04 publications, of the selected studies the physiotherapy techniques used were stretching, isometric strengthening exercises, range of motion exercises, joint mobilization, neuromuscular facilitation proprioceptive and hydrotherapy. Conclusion: It was seen that physical therapy promotes good results in improving the functionality of patients with HIV associated with neurotoxoplasmosis, mainly in balance, functional mobility, motor coordination and motor symptoms, however there was a shortage of articles in relation to physical therapy treatment for people with HIV. associated with neurotoxoplasmosis, it is suggested that new studies of high methodological quality be developed in order to investigate further on this topic for better evidence-based practice.
