Abstract:
My students are, for the most part, potentially very good writers. However, when I get these students, their lab report writing skills are quite limited, and therefore, are very poor. Focus for doing labs thus far in their science career has been how well they can perform the lab from verbal instructions not written instructions. The students have a difficult time reading and understanding what the protocol wants them to do, and they have an even more difficult time explaining what they performed during the lab activity in a lab report. This project investigated how well the students discussed their course of action after performing the lab activity in a written report. The students were given written lab protocols and were expected to follow the procedure and make observations along the way. The labs were all completed in one 45 minute class period. The students were then given one day in class to work on their lab report following the lab report rubric (Appendix A). Data collection for this project not only included lab report writing, but what the students' comfort levels were in different elements of the lab, how well they reviewed their own work, how well they reviewed other peer's work, and how they felt about the whole lab report writing process throughout the year. Several teachers were also asked to evaluate how well these particular students processed and followed directions in their classrooms as well. The resulted indicated that by implementing a peer review session into the lab report writing process the report score significantly improved. The students who struggled at the beginning of the process were now completing quality lab reports in half the time and the peer review rubrics were being scored with the highest marks. Because of these positive outcomes, I know that peer review is an integral part of the learning process to produce quality lab reports and I will continue to conduct this practice in my classroom in years to come.

Il mio lavoro di tesi si intitola "Alla ricerca dell'autenticità. Kathy Acker e Vladimir Sorokin a confronto". La comparazione riflette sulle inaspettate similarità sociali, e di conseguenza letterarie, di Usa e Urss dagli anni Settanta agli anni Novanta, indagate attraverso l'arte dei due scrittori citati nel titolo.  Kathy Acker è nata nel 1947 a New York e durante gli anni Settanta frequentò assiduamente la comunità artistica definita "Downtown New York". Vladimir Sorokin è nato nel 1955 nei dintorni di Mosca e negli stessi anni entrò all'intorno del circolo "Moskovskij Konzeptualism" della grande città. Queste due comunità artistiche erano create dalla libera aggregazione di artisti, scultori, letterati, poeti, musicisti.. in un vortice creativo in contrasto con la chiusura sociale e artistica degli ambiti definibili come accademici o ufficiali.  Con le loro opere Acker e Sorokin cercarono di distruggere le norme sovraimposte e arrivare all'"autenticità" riguardo al sé, all'homo sovieticus, all'uomo americano e riguardo al genere umano in generale.  Nell'arco del mio studio l'utopia del radioso avvenire sovietico e l'utopia del sogno americano d'oltreoceano si sono rivelati come prigioni della vita di ogni giorno, in grado di allontanare l'uomo dai suoi desideri veri e dai suoi impulsi più umani. Le risposte artistiche delle due comunità in generale e dei due scrittori in particolare sono volte alla liberazione dai vincoli dell'utopia e alla riscoperta di ciò che è ritenuto come debolezza e bassezza dell'uomo. Le due comunità artistiche cercarono il contatto con un vasto pubblico non elitario, cercano un linguaggio comprensibile da tutti. Contemporaneamente il corpo con tutte le sue pulsioni cerca di riguadagnare il proprio spazio in un sè egemonizzato dalla mente. Ma quel che queste comunità artistiche soprattutto fanno è porre domande alla coscienza e incoscienza della società. Cercano di trasformare il terrore quotidiano in qualcosa di comprensibile e scaricabile, un ruolo che una volta era proprio dei rituali trasgressivi del popolo e che dal Novecento, con la trasformazione del popolo in massa omologata, sono venuti a mancare. Acker e Sorokin cercano strutture narrative e artistiche in grado di proporre alla “corporealtà collettiva” una via di redenzione ritualistica. Questi artisti non si conformano e sono in grado di illuminare, di dare sostentamento all'individuo nella ricerca personale di una lingua, di un pensiero, di un mito in cui vivere. Reagiscono al balbettio omologante delle società di massa, non si adeguano a nessuna forma fissa e anche la loro arte continua a evolvere, a fallire, a cercare.

Abstract:
This thesis is the first full-length study of the fiction-of Kathy Acker, a radical and transgressive American female writer (1947-1997). The study maps the development of Acker's fiction by focusing on the political dimension of her aesthetic strategies. It explores the politics of plagiarism and appropriation; the subversive representation of gender and sexual politics; and the anarchistic impulse of Acker's work. The main theoretical and political approaches employed are: feminist theory, poststructuralism, abjection and anarchism. The study begins with an introduction to Acker's life, since there is a significant if problematic autobiographical impulse in her writing, and her socio-cultural context. It proceeds to a detailed critical exploration of work published between 1968 and 1986, drawing attention to Acker's affinities with a poststructuralist project. Acker's strategies of juxtaposition, paradox, and contradiction, alongside her fragmented, non-linear, digressive narratives, are read as a form of social critique. Her use and abuse of the white, male, Euro-centric canon is examined in light of the construction of female sexuality, and Acker's focus on phallocentric language as a source of subjugation is also considered. The study then argues for and interrogates Acker's move towards a more affirmative narrative strategy before looking in detail at her fiction of the 1990s - fiction which, until now, has received slight attention. Through close readings of her later novels, the study illustrates how Julia Kristeva's concept of the abject is fruitful for an examination of Acker's work, and examines cross-cultural intertextuality (from the horror film to the avant-garde). It also relates the trope of piracy that is present in Acker's later works to the political ideology of anarchism. The conclusion to the thesis argues that Acker's strength lies in her uncompromising belief in the avant-garde, and details her sustained attempt to make critically incisive political art.

O presente trabalho problematiza o papel atribuído pela tendência marxista em Filosofia da Educação no Brasil ao pensamento educacional neotomista. Utilizando-se da hermenêutica de Gadamer, realiza-se movimento de aproximação e distanciamento das principais idéias educacionais católicas disseminadas por periódicos nos anos trinta. Procura-se distinguir um pensador, Leonardo Van Acker, como um teórico que tenta dialogar criticamente com o mundo e o pensamento modernos; demonstra-se como, neste diálogo, aproxima-se do pensamento pragmático de Dewey. Ao final, discute-se o elemento de criticidade presente no pensamento de Van Acker, para tanto, realiza-se um contraponto com o pensamento crítico de Horkheimer.
This essay inquires about how the marxist tendency in Philosophy of Education in Brazil understand de neotomist educational thinking. With the Gadamer's hermeneutic, it realizes a movement of aproximation and distancing of mean catolic educational thinking publiched in papers and magazines on the therties. Leonardo Van Acker is detached as a thinker who tries to dialogue criticaly about the modern world and modern thinking. At this dialogue, his ideas is next to the Dewey pragmatic thinking. As conclusion, it inquires about the critical elements presentes in Van Acker and compares him with the Horkheimer critical thinking.

Utilizando-se da hermenêutica de Gadamer, realiza-se movimento de aproximação e distanciamento das principais idéias educacionais católicas disseminadas por periódicos nos anos trinta. Procura-se distinguir um pensador, Leonardo Van Acker, como um teórico que tenta dialogar criticamente com o mundo e o pensamento modernos; demonstra-se como, neste diálogo, aproxima-se do pensamento pragmático de Dewey. ‘Accounting has come to occupy an ever more significant position in the functioning of modern industrial societies’ (Burchell et al 1980: 5). Almost 40 years have elapsed since this comment was made and during that time the UK accounting profession has secured a fundamental presence in the neoliberal global economy, wielding great power. However, the scale and scope of accounting’s success has been gender asymmetrical; women accountants have not achieved commensurate success with men either in terms of ICAEW membership or Big 4 partner numbers. This thesis charts the role and performance of women in the UK accounting profession from 1870 to 2013, critically assessing the reasons why women fail to do as well as men.

Abstract:
Dieses Material soll es dem Lehrer ermöglichen, schnell und mit wenig Arbeitsaufwand eine oder mehrere Unterrichtsstunden zum Thema "Söldnertum" vorzubereiten, aber auch zur Arbeit mit Bildquellen anregen, die in der Schule oftmals recht stiefmütterlich behandelt werden. Zu diesem Zweck wird in aller Kürze in die Entstehung des Soldkriegswesens als Form staatlich organisierter Gewaltsamkeit eingeführt. Ausgehend von der Spätantike werden die militärischen, wirtschaftlichen und demographischen Faktoren, die zur "Renaissance des Fußvolkes" geführt haben, beschrieben, und auf entsprechende Fachpublikationen verwiesen. Organisation, Struktur und Rechtsformen der Söldnerheere werden vorgestellt und immer anhand von Bildquellen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts verdeutlicht. Der zweite Teil dieses Materials besteht aus einer Einführung in die Historische Bildkunde, so dass die Schüler den Umgang mit dieser Quellengattung zügig erlernen können. Um die komplexe Symbolik der Bildmaterialien der Frühen Neuzeit entschlüsseln zu können, wurde als Hilfe für Lehrer und Schüler ein Symbolschlüssel angefertigt. Die Quellen liegen in digitaler Form, in zwei Ausführungen (einer mit Markierungen der wichtigsten Symbole für den Lehrer, einer ohne diese Markierungen als Arbeitsmaterial für die Schüler) der Arbeit bei. Das Material ist modular aufgebaut, so dass man bei Bedarf nur einen Aspekt des Soldkriegswesens (beispielsweise das Trossvolk oder die Verrechtlichung innerhalb der Söldnerheere) von den Schülern bearbeiten lassen kann.
Abschließend werden Vorschläge für Tafelbilder und Übersichten, sowie für Aufgabenstellungen, die sich sowohl zur Einzel- als auch zur Gruppen- oder Projektarbeit eignen, unterbreitet.

Abstract:
Women in the Armed Forces all over the world are in minority in general. In the Swedish Armed Forces only 7% of the officers are female and for every hierarchal step the percentage decreases. The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge of genderrelations in maledominated organizations where a pressure exists to change these relations. The study focuses on how these relations influence women´s oppertunitys in making a career. The study is conducted through a survey where women and men are asked questions designed after Joan Acker´s theory of “Doing gender” and Rosabeth Moss Kanter´s theory of empowerment.  The result of this study shows that women and men choose to make a career for mostly the same reasons but have different opinions of the possibilities for men and women. According to Kanter´s theory of empowerment this can be explained by the social networks that men have but women are excluded from. Also the opinions of equal presuppositions diverse between men and women and through the lens of Acker´s theory of gendered organizations this is due to the day-to-day practices where women are deviant from the male norm and also from being absent from work when having children.
