Abstract:
Abstract The writer Kathy Acker (1947–97) is one of those few in the anglophone canon, or even near it, who opens a space for trans experiences. If trans literature, and literary studies, is to widen their ambits of aesthetic operation, one useful step would be to expand the critical study and literary experiment with such writers. The “Trans | Acker Symposium” at The New School in 2019 was a modest contribution to this project. This text introduces Acker and three of the texts from that event.

Acker, Melanie S. "Does peer review improve lab report quality in high school science students?" Montana State University, 2011. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2011/acker/AckerM0811.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
My students are, for the most part, potentially very good writers. However, when I get these students, their lab report writing skills are quite limited, and therefore, are very poor. Focus for doing labs thus far in their science career has been how well they can perform the lab from verbal instructions not written instructions. The students have a difficult time reading and understanding what the protocol wants them to do, and they have an even more difficult time explaining what they performed during the lab activity in a lab report. This project investigated how well the students discussed their course of action after performing the lab activity in a written report. The students were given written lab protocols and were expected to follow the procedure and make observations along the way. The labs were all completed in one 45 minute class period. The students were then given one day in class to work on their lab report following the lab report rubric (Appendix A). Data collection for this project not only included lab report writing, but what the students' comfort levels were in different elements of the lab, how well they reviewed their own work, how well they reviewed other peer's work, and how they felt about the whole lab report writing process throughout the year. Several teachers were also asked to evaluate how well these particular students processed and followed directions in their classrooms as well. The resulted indicated that by implementing a peer review session into the lab report writing process the report score significantly improved. The students who struggled at the beginning of the process were now completing quality lab reports in half the time and the peer review rubrics were being scored with the highest marks. Because of these positive outcomes, I know that peer review is an integral part of the learning process to produce quality lab reports and I will continue to conduct this practice in my classroom in years to come.

Imbriaco, Giulia. "Alla ricerca dell'autenticità. Kathy Acker e Vladimir Sorokin a confronto." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/5518/.

Full text
Abstract:
Kathy Acker e Vladimir Sorokin a confronto".

Abstract:
Currently many methods of drying are under investigation for the anhydrous preservation of mammalian cells, including convective drying (Bhowmick et al., 2003), vacuum drying (Elliott et al., 2002), room temperature desiccation cabinet drying (Acker et al., 2002), and freeze-drying (Wolkers et al., 2001). Independent of the drying method, cells are typically in an aqueous suspension at the onset. Generally the change in ‘system’ weight (cells and extracellular solution) is measured gravimetrically and this moisture loss in the system is assumed to equate to the loss of moisture within the suspended cells. This approach assumes that the intra- and extra cellular water contents are equivalent and that the dried sample is homogenous. These assumptions are not always valid. Oftentimes cells are seen to pool towards the middle of a droplet and macroscopic heterogeneities of moisture content within the droplet are sometimes visible by eye. Although important advances in mammalian cell preservation have been made using this approach, a convenient method of determining localized water content within such samples would advance the state-of-the-art in drying technologies. Because sugars are a common excipient used in drying, the current study investigates the spatial distribution of moisture content in dried sugar matrices using pyranine as a fluorescent probe of the local water environment. The pyranine molecule has two fluorescent states, emitting at 511 nm (green) and 440 nm (blue). Using calibration curves based on ratiometric measurements of blue to green pyranine fluorescence emissions the effect of drying substrate on moisture content uniformity is explored in pyranine-doped sucrose solutions.

Abstract:
In the reliability engineering and design of offshore structures probabilistic approaches are frequently adopted. They require the estimation of extreme quantiles of oceanographic data based on the statistical information. Due to strong correlation between such random variables as e.g. wave heights and wind speeds, application of the multivariate, or bivariate in the simplest case, extreme value theory is sometimes necessary. The paper focuses on the extension of the ACER method for prediction of extreme value statistics to the case of bivariate time series. Using the ACER method it is possible to provide an estimate of the exact extreme value distribution of a univariate time series. This is obtained by introducing a cascade of conditioning approximations to the exact extreme value distribution. When this cascade has converged, an estimate of the exact distribution has been obtained. In this paper it will be shown how the univariate ACER method can be extended in a natural way to also cover the case of bivariate data. Application of the bivariate ACER method will also be demonstrated at the measured coupled wind speed and wave height data.

Abstract:
ACER works with thousands of Australian schools to set up Progressive Achievement Test (PAT) functionality, assign and administer tests, and to assist teachers to understand and interrogate the resulting test data and act upon findings. This session provides participants with an opportunity to hear about a school’s journey, and discuss this with the ACER team and our PAT school guest. ACER researchers have evaluated and documented assessment implementation and professional development opportunities, observing this school’s ability to track student and educator progress over time, which is a critical element in ACER’s Progressive Achievement approach. ACER’s educational consultants will demonstrate how PAT data ‘champions’ support staff across a primary and secondary school. Finally, we address and discuss the question many schools ask when using their data – ‘What does a year’s growth look like?’

Abstract:
This presentation outlines different models of writing assessment that have a proven track record in various programs delivered by ACER. These models include holistic scoring, and partial analytical scoring on a number of criteria. The writing prompts for these models assume extended pieces of writing. The presentation will also introduce a new and alternative model of writing assessment that ACER has implemented in several large-scale assessments. This model is built on shorter pieces of writing from each student, designed to give more accurate and diverse insights into students’ proficiency in writing in a range of text types, within the constraints of limited assessment time. Each short piece is coded using a different marking scheme with customised criteria. The three models – holistic scoring, partial analytical scoring and customised criterion scoring – are designed for different assessment contexts, from high-stakes selection to formative use by classroom teachers.

Abstract:
This rapid evaluation of core Life Education programs conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in June 2021 is an independent investigation that demonstrates the evidence base underpinning Life Education programs in primary schools Australia-wide. It presents a national snapshot by drawing upon existing Life Education-specific evaluation data, existing ACER student wellbeing data, and accepted best practice in the field of student health and wellbeing education. The project addressed the key evaluation questions: How are core Life Education programs underpinned by evidence-based best practice, and how are core Life Education programs impacting primary-aged student wellbeing outcomes that align to the health and physical education Australian and State Curriculums?

Також спостерігається інтенсивне самовідновлення інтродукованих, потенційно інвазивних видів рослин, таких як клен ясенелистий (Acer negundo L.), маслинка вузьколиста (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.), садова iрга звичайна (Amelanchier ovalis Medik.), верба ламка (Salix flagilis L.) та робiнiя звичайна (Robinia pseudoacacia L.).

Abstract:
(Lonicera tatarica L.).
