Abstract:
The differences in learning achievements between male and female students in math have been an important topic in educational research field. In this field many international studies e.g. Trend in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)) have been conducted for many years. TIMSS study around 40 countries in the world in grade five shows that, in most countries boys and girls do similar in math. PISA study shows 15 years old boys do better than girls in the same age and level. In addition the study which was conducted in the Afghan context assessed that, girls in grade four do slightly better than boys in the same grade in math (Mansory, 2000).       The issue that I have studied here concerns the learning achievements level of male and female students at grade 13 and 14 at four TTC and the teacher educators’ perspectives related to male and female students learning achievements in mathematics in Afghanistan. In total, 503 male and female students and their 23 teacher educators’ perspectives from the four selected TTCs around Afghanistan, in three provinces (Jawzjan, Saripul, Mazar-e- Sharif and Khwaja- do-Koh district of Jawzjan province) are assessed in this study. Three TTCs are located in urban areas; one which is a Teacher Development Center is located in a rural area. The learning achievements of students were first assessed as a whole and then as a comparison between rural and urban areas were made. Two types of data are collected for this study, students’ scores were collected from the annul exam of students and compared with different variables to find the differences between male and female students. And questionnaires were used to obtain teacher educators’ perspectives about male and female students’ learning achievements. Questionnaire had 19 questions to achieve the purpose of the study, mostly the questionnaire asked about students’ learning achievements from school, in the class,   the impact of encouragement on male and female students’ learning achievements, the impact of teacher educators’ gender on students’ learning achievements. The results found from students’ scores and teacher educators’ perspectives are then highlighted and explored in the tables and then analyzed and discussed. The result found from students’ score showed that female students scored higher than male students after analyzing of the data. Further more students taught by male teacher educators had better result in average score than students who taught by female teacher educators. Teacher educators’ perspectives also explore many views about male and female students’ learning achievements in math. The data obtained from teacher educators’ perspective showed that most male and female students have low achievements level and difficulties in math from school. Teacher educators’ perspectives also explores there  are many other factors which influence male and female students’ learning achievements in math, for instance security, economy, distance to TTCs and environment. The mentioned factors have great impact on male and female students’ learning achievement from teacher educators’ views point in math.

Abstract:
This is a study of gender difference within the field of mathematics between 857 twelfth grade students (355 boys and 502 girls). The data sample contains a small group of students within two of the 34 provinces in Afghanistan. Ten of the schools were girls’ only, and twelve were boy schools. In this study the data collected was analyzed by comparing the results of test scores of 12th grade math high school students. The question to be answered within this research: To what extent differences are in mathematics achievements between male and female students at the high school level? The results show that math achievements in grade 12th were different among female and male students. Females’ achievements were lower than males. Teachers’ teaching experience had no significant influence on the average scores. In regards to students’ exam scores in relation to teachers' education level. The average score of students taught by teachers with grade 16 and grade 14 was not significant different, thus a very small difference. Additionally, this study concentrated more on factors that affect girls’ math achievements. It also pointed to parental support, self-confidence, students’ interest to math, and cultural issues. As teachers were asked about ability of learning math, it does not relate to student s’ sex. The teachers added those learners who make more efforts have better achievements in mathematics. The research is based on a small sample which does not cover the whole country. To get a clearer understanding of females achievements in high school math classes, a full country study with thousands of scores to compare, would perhaps bring this small study to the eyes of Ministry of Education and large donors. It would seem that good teaching methodology in math may have better result for females test scores.

Abstract:
Enligt tidigare forskning finns det ett samband mellan motivation och akademiska prestationer. Syftet med föreliggande studie var att undersöka sambandet mellan gymnasieelevers motivation, ansvarskänsla, närvaro, föräldrars/vårdnadstagares utbildningsnivå, studietid utanför skolan och deras studieresultat. De hypoteser som ställdes utifrån tidigare forskning var att högre motivation, ansvarskänsla samt studietid utanför skolan skulle predicera elevers akademiska prestationer. Föräldrars utbildningsnivå skulle ha ett mindre samband på prestation och närvaro skulle inte kunna predicera akademiska prestationer alls. Studien genomfördes genom en kvantitativ metod på två skolor i en mellanstor stad i södra Sverige och insamlad data analyserades genom en stegvis regressionsanalys. För att mäta motivation och ansvarskänsla användes två befintliga enkäter som översattes till svenska. Dessa kompletterades med frågor för resterande variabler som sedan sammanställdes till en enkät som sammanlagt 78 elever svarade på. Resultatet visade att inre motivation, inre motivation för att uppnå mål, positiv ansvarskänsla och studietid var signifikanta prediktorer till elevers akademiska prestationer, som då hade en positiv inverkan på utfallsvariabeln. Ytterligare en variabel var en signifikant prediktor till betyg, inre reglering som påverkade utfallsvariabeln negativt. Slutsatsen av denna studie var att lärare bör sträva efter att skapa villkor som ökar elevers inre motivation och känsla för ansvar, samt uppmuntra elever att använda mer tid att studera utanför lektionstid.

O closed caption é um tipo de legenda que foi concebida para permitir aos surdos e pessoas com dificuldades auditivas o acesso a programas, comerciais e filmes veiculados na televisão, em vídeo e DVD. Criado nos Estados Unidos, ele também atende a outros segmentos da sociedade, como idosos ensurdecidos, estrangeiros aprendendo o idioma, semi-analfabetos e crianças em fase de alfabetização e possibilita o entendimento do áudio em locais onde o som da TV for inaudível. No Brasil, o primeiro programa transmitido com closed caption – também denominado legenda fechada – foi o Jornal Nacional, da Rede Globo, em 1997. Desde então, o número de programas que disponibilizam a tecnologia vem crescendo e só tende a aumentar à medida que a Lei 10.098 de 2006, conhecida como Lei da Acessibilidade, for implantada. Essa lei, que estabelece a obrigatoriedade do uso da legenda fechada em programas de televisão, determina que, até 2019, toda a programação brasileira seja transmitida com esse recurso. Em sintonia com o movimento de expansão do closed caption no Brasil, a proposta deste trabalho é traçar um panorama do uso da tecnologia no país, analisando suas principais características e as diferenças em relação a outros modelos, com base na teoria dos polissistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar (1997 [1990]) e nos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução, com especial destaque para os conceitos de norma, de Gideon Toury (1995), e patronagem, de André Lefevere (1992). Além disso, levando em conta essas características, será discutida a noção de tradução, bem como a possibilidade de atribuir tal estatuto à legenda fechada.
Closed captions are a type of subtitling created to allow people with hearing impairments to understand shows, commercials and movies on television, video or DVD. Created in the US, it has also helped other segments of the population, such as the elderly, foreigners learning a new language, semi-illiterate people and children that are learning to read. It is also a solution for places in which the TV sound is inaudible. In Brazil, the first TV show broadcast with closed captions was Jornal Nacional, on Rede Globo, in 1997. Since then, the number of programs broadcast with this resource has been increasing and it is expected to grow even further after the law known as the Accessibility Bid, voted in 2006, is made effective. This law establishes that the use of closed captions in Brazilian TV shows is obligatory and that, by 2019, all shows aired on Brazilian television must be broadcast with closed captions. Considering the expansion of the technology in Brazil, this dissertation aims to present an overall view of the way closed captions are being used in Brazil, the difference from other types of captions and the main resources used, based on Even- Zohar s Polysystem Theory (1997 [1990]) and the concepts of norm (Toury, 1995), and patronage (Lefevere, 1992) from Descriptive Translation Studies. Furthermore, taking into consideration the characteristics of closed caption, we intend to discuss the status of translation that is being given to the technology.

I denna studie, som bygger på tidigare arbete på achievements och belöningssystem, utreds effekten av achievementsystem på spelupplevelsen och spelandet i ett tredjepersons actionspel. Dessutom har achievements i tredjepersons actionspel undersökts för att ta reda på vilka typer av achievements som passar bäst in i genren. För att undersöka detta har andra achievementsystem analyserats och fyra kategorier av achievements klassificerats. För undersökningen har en bana skapats i ett tredjepersons actionspel, samt ett för genren representativt achievementsystem som sedan implementerats. Studien har visat att achievementsystem ökar spelares utforskningstendens och speltid. Samtidigt har utforskningsbaserade achievements visat sig vara de mest populära i spelet, och handlingsbaserade de minst populära. Överlag ansåg testdeltagarna att achievements ska vara svåra att uppnå för att ha betydelse för spelaren. Achievements som fenomen är fortfarande ungt och mer utförliga studier på ämnet hade kunnat hjälpa spelutvecklare att förstå den relation olika typer av spelare har till achievements.

Abstract:
The aim of the study - to analyze the main factors of learning achievements of intellectually gifted children. The sample consists of 16 - 18 year old students (N = 54), whose Reasoning Total (RT) scores in Intelligence Structure Test 2000R (I-S-T 2000 R, Amthauer R., Brocke B., Liepmann D, Beauducel, 2001) are 90 percentile or higher. This thesis analyses the peculiarities of intellectual activity of intellectually gifted 16- 18 years old students, their learning achievements and has the objective to determine individual and environmental factors of their learning achievements. The results show that Intellectually gifted 16 - 18 year old students have unique intelligence structure when fluid intelligence (Gf) is higher than crystallized intelligence (Gc) and numerical abilities are higher than verbal abilities. Part of older intellectually gifted students are underachievers and their learning achievements are not related to their intelligence. Learning motivation, study/organizational skills and gender are the most important factors of learning achievements of intellectually exceptionally gifted and gifted 16 - 18 year old students and they not depend on the level of their intellectual abilities.
Disertacijos tikslas – išanalizuoti intelektualiai gabių vaikų pasiekimų veiksnius. Tyrime dalyvavo 16–18 m. mokiniai (n = 54), kurių Bendrieji samprotavimo gebėjimai, tirti Intelekto struktūros testu (I-S-T 2000R) (Amthauer ir kt., 2007) atitinka 90 ir didesnį procentilį. Tyrime įvertinti mokinių intelektinės veiklos ypatumai, mokymosi pasiekimai bei mokymosi pasiekimų individualūs ir aplinkos veiksniai. Remiantis tyrimo rezultatais nustatyta, kad intelektualiai gabūs 16–18 m. mokiniai pasižymi savita intelekto struktūra, kai fluidinis intelektas (Gf) yra aukštesnis už kristalizuotą intelektą (Gc), o matematiniai gebėjimai yra didesni nei verbaliniai. Dalis intelektualiai gabių vyresnių klasių mokinių mokosi prasčiau nei geba ir tokie jų mokymosi rezultatai nėra susiję su jų intelekto ypatumais. Mokymosi motyvacija, mokymosi įgūdžiai ir lytis yra svarbiausi itin gabių ir gabių 16–18 m. mokinių mokymosi pasiekimų veiksniai ir nepriklauso nuo jų intelektinių gebėjimų lygio.

Abstract:
Computer technology has been used in education for years, and the government budgets large amounts of money to foster technology. However, it is still a debated whether computer technology makes a difference in students' learning outcomes. The purpose of this study is to find if any relationship exists between computer use by teachers and students and the students' academic achievement in math and reading for both traditional populations and English language learner (ELL) tenth graders. Computer use in this study included the computer activities by students and teachers, in terms of the time, frequency, activities types, the places students use computers, teachers' computer activities, and the training teachers received. This study used data gathered from tenth grade students from the dataset Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Fifteen thousand, three hundred and sixty-two students were randomly selected to represent all U.S. tenth-graders attending schools in 2002. The findings showed diverse relationships consistent with the literature. Based on the findings, some suggestions were made to teachers and parents about the quality of school work and computer use by students and teachers.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO
A presente pesquisa analisou a dinâmica dos espaços públicos de saúde, segundo os referenciais da promoção da saúde e seus desdobramentos, tendo como campo empírico a sala de espera, espaço institucionalizado onde o cidadão aguarda atendimento. O espaço público é expressão das relações sociais e de poder, fundamentado na ética cidadã, na pluralidade, na liberdade, na transparência, no diálogo, na solidariedade, na educação conscientizadora e transformadora. Fez-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre sala de espera e análise documental sobre Promoção da Saúde. A pesquisa de campo foi quali-quantitativa, usou multi-métodos e foi realizada nos 17 Centros de Saúde Escola (CSE) do Brasil, relacionados no Cadastro Nacional de Estabelecimentos de Saúde (Cnes), entre 2009 e 2010. Foram entrevistados 91 cidadãos (24 gestores, 35 profissionais de saúde e 32 usuários), buscando identificar a evolução dos conceitos, das práticas e da institucionalização da Promoção da Saúde, na perspectiva da Atenção Básica de Saúde no âmbito do SUS. Os resultados mostraram uma sintonia na percepção dos entrevistados com essa evolução, identificando variadas dificuldades e vantagens na prática das atividades educativas, notadamente no espaço de sala de espera. Dentre as dificuldades, destacaram as ligadas ao ambiente construído, aos recursos humanos disponíveis, à dispersão dos usuários e à falta de apoio institucional. As vantagens mais citadas foram a de democratização do conhecimento, a interação social, a humanização, a organização do serviço, e a qualificação de discentes e profissionais de saúde. Ficou notória, de um lado, a visibilidade das salas de espera dos CSE como espaços empíricos de ações educativas e informativas; de outro, sua invisibilidade enquanto categoria teórica de espaço promotor de saúde, como espaço público onde se incentive o enfrentamento da questão social brasileira. O estudo conclui 8 que a visibilidade das salas de espera como espaço público pode ser ampliada através da valorização e do enriquecimento do saber popular e do agir em conjunto, para o incentivo à cidadania e ao bem comum, aplicando procedimentos criativos, oportunos e atrativos, sob a ótica de nossas carências atuais de recursos.
This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of public spaces of health, according to the references of health promotion and its ramifications, using as empirical field the Waiting Room (WR). In this study, the WR represents an institutionalized space, a built environment used under the responsibility of a legal institution, where the citizen waits for treatment. The public space expresses the social and power relationships based on ethics, plurality, freedom, transparency, dialogue, solidarity, and transformative education for critical consciousness. There was a literature search on the waiting room and document analysis on the Promotion of Health. The field research is quali-quantitative, used multi-methods and was conducted in 17 School Health Centers (CSE, in portuguese) in Brazil, listed on the National Register of Health Establishments (CNES, in portuguese), between 2009 and 2010. We interviewed 91 people (24 managers, 35 professionals and 32 users) in order to identify the evolution of concepts, practices and institutionalization of health promotion from the perspective of primary health care in the SUS (Health Unique System, in portuguese). The results showed a consistent perception of people interviewed with these developments, identifying different challenges and advantages in the practice of educational activities, especially within the WR. Among the difficulties, were highlighted those related to the built environment, the available human resources, the dispersion of users and the lack of institutional support. The main advantages cited were the democratization of knowledge, the social interaction, the humanization, the service organization, and the qualification of students and health professionals. It became notorious the visibility of the WR of the CSE as an empirical space for educational and informative actions; on the other hand, it became obvious its invisibility as a theoretical category of promoter of health, a public space made to encourage the confronting of social issues in Brazil. The study concludes that the visibility of 10 WR as a public space can be expanded through the enhancement and enrichment of popular knowledge and the acting together to favor common goods and citizenship, applying creative, relevant and attractive procedures, from the perspective of our current lack of resources.

Abstract:

This dissertation research is a comprehensive study of Asian Americans' socioeconomic achievements. It aims to measure changes of Asian Americans' socioeconomic achievements between 2005 and 2015, to examine the glass ceiling facing Asian Americans, and to evaluate the impacts of the Great Recession and concentration on occupational attainments of Asian Americans.

Using American Community Survey data, I attempt to answer the following questions. First, how did the patterns of Asian Americans' socioeconomic achievements changed over a decade between 2005 and 2015? Second, how thick and persistent is the glass ceiling faced by Asian immigrants and U.S.-born Asians? Third, did Asian Americans benefit from geographical and industrial concentration? Fourth, what was the impacts of the Great Recession on Asian Americans?

The potential contributions of this study are as follows. First and foremost, it provides substantiate empirical findings on glass ceiling facing Asian Americans. Moreover, it clarifies the effects of industrial and geographical concentration on each of the major Asian American groups. It examines how glass ceiling facing Asian Americans being strengthened during the Great Recession. In addition to the theoretical contributions, it also improves research methods through applying synthetic cohort analysis on the study of glass ceiling.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the linguistic practices 9–13 year-old African American students who attended an after school program in Washington, D.C. used to negotiate schooling and achievement. It builds on existing anthropological research on how young people are socialized into their communities, classrooms, and the wider society via language. It renders this process particular to the students’ lived experiences of race, poverty, and contemporary schooling reform. By focusing on linguistic practice and the language ideologies held by the students, the dissertation explores the difficulties racially identified minority students face in school when they are asked by the wider society’s major socializing agents and institutions to exchange cultural identity for academic success.

The dissertation is based on 8 months of ethnographic fieldwork that was conducted from October 2010–June 2011. During these months, over 108 hours of data were recorded from 30 preadolescents who served as research subjects. Informal interviews with after school staff and adults from the local community were also conducted. In the third and final phase (April–June 2011), focus groups were conducted with 12 of the students.

The dissertation provides evidence that among same- and similar-age peers, the students often repurposed the linguistic practices they learned from adults, and in ways that did not always align with the dominant expectations of the more socially powerful members of either the community or the after school program. It argues that the types of AAVE-based “conflict” talk students test in peer contexts perform positive socializing functions but that these discourse styles were nevertheless often interpreted, by adults as well as the students themselves, as unpreparedness or unwillingness to achieve in school.

This study revisits major theorizing of hegemony, critical consciousness, and “the Black underclass.” It suggests that while preadolescent-age African Americans try to construct “achievement” on their own terms via linguistic practice, they are not always successful because they are not empowered in the classroom, situationally or in the long term. It concludes by recommending ways in which educational practitioners and theorists can better understand how academically marginalized students engage with schooling and how they can support these students’ negotiated achievements.

The claim providing the starting point for this thesis is that most narrative films are in an overtly dramatic, melodramatic or comic idiom. These modes seem most adept at tapping the visually expressive potentialities of the art and satisfying the needs of the audience: the narratives of most films are structured around either confrontation, or colourful events, or crisis, or periods of significant change, and they are expressed in a demonstrative visual style. This thesis is interested in the way a few films uncover profundity by structuring narrative around a range of life experiences unavailable to the melodramatic mode as it has developed in world cinema; life experiences based in the everyday, that is in the routine or repetitive, in the apparently banal or mundane, the uneventful. The first part of the thesis discusses the nature of the achievement of these undramatic films which address the everyday: how they help us to understand the medium of film, its possibilities, and how they enhance our ways of viewing and appreciating narratives. This section also focuses on the work of Stanley Cavell, exploring the links between the everyday, film melodrama, and scepticism. The second half of the thesis looks at the specific achievements of four films. Here, the thesis continues the expressive tradition of film scholarship which analyses the communication of meaning through the construction of mise-en-scene, exploring how the themes, ideas, and happenings of a film are served by their stylistic strategies, while further highlighting how such strategies may reveal significant possibilities of the medium. In doing so it follows the approach of writers such as Stanley Cavell, V. F. Perkins and George M. Wilson whilst redirecting this tradition by applying it to less obviously expressive films.

Abstract:
This research is premised on the investigation of Muslim women working in the Iranian Radio and Television Organisation (IRIB). The study is structured on a number of principal questions: why these women joined IRIB and how they managed the reactions of sceptical family members; how they construct the meaning of womanhood in relation to work, family and motherhood; what challenges these women encounter in the workplace; and how they negotiate and persevere to overcome those challenges, achieve success and make changes in a male-dominated organisation. The main focus is on the post-1979 Islamic revolution, when many practicing Muslim women, who were largely excluded from the film and media industries before the Revolution, began working in radio and television. Modern media that were considered instruments of ‘westernisation’ and ‘decadence’ before the Revolution were re-legitimised by religious authorities and even elevated to the status of ‘public universities’. Many Muslim women, therefore, entered this male dominated ‘forbidden space’ that had a largely secular and liberal work culture before the Revolution. Through 30 semi-structured interviews with these women, this research examines gender relations within the workspace, family domain and in the public arena. The research manifests complex dynamics of gender relations in the context of Iran and in the IRIB organisation. It argues that gender is a relational concept; and an area of constant negotiation and contest. In particular, the study demonstrates that gender relations are defined in negotiation with religious beliefs, traditional norms and political ideologies. They are also reinforced in the family and embedded in the culture of organisation. Overall, it is concluded that after the Islamic revolution, Muslim women found new opportunities to enter spaces in the public domain that were previously considered as being ‘inappropriate’ for women. Despite confronting many challenges in this respect, they have exercised their agency and achieved considerable success in changing traditional and prejudiced attitudes within structures that are underpinned by Islamic gender ideology. In doing so, they have also constructed a new identity of Muslim women that goes beyond simplistic stereotypical dichotomies such as liberated/oppressed, western/eastern, and secular/Muslim.

The objective of this research was to analyze the professional trajectory of black teachers and doctors, who work in public universities in CearÃ. Objectively, has been sought to understand if institutional racism and gender interfere in their professional trajectories, and what challenges were found to legitimize themselves in academic and scientific space. The methodology adopted is a qualitative research through semi-structured interviews with black female teachers who work in federal and state public institutions located in the interior and capital of the state of CearÃ. The interviews were fulfilled into 3 parts: identity profile (general information of interviewed), socioeconomic data and life history. Parallel to the interviews, the Curriculum Lattes of each teacher was analyzed in order to identify the academic course carried out by the teachers. From the narratives of nine black female teachers located at the State University of CearÃ, Federal University of CearÃ, Cariri Regional University and University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony, we present her trajectories, achievements and challenges. In this research, in spite of showing the advances and the achievements made by black teachers in higher education institutions, what represents the constant effective work through the construction of new methodological and epistemological proposals, it also presents and denounces the multiple facet of racism, prejudice and racial discrimination, through the career trajectories in the institutional sphere or in interpersonal relationships. These findings call attention to the urgency of constructing new concrete attitudes in the institutional sphere, in this way, some actions could be more prominent to confront racism and segregationism practices and the power relations imbued in academic culture. In spite of everything, we could reaffirm that the presence of black teachers in this white academy, rework the scientific canons, and it is also a space of affirmation and recognition. Once they are there (in the universities), they carry out a work where the individual is collective, within a perspective of schooling and antiracist education.
O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar a trajetÃria profissional de docentes negras e doutoras, que atuam em universidades pÃblicas do CearÃ. Objetivamente, buscou-se compreender se racismo institucional e gÃnero interferem em suas trajetÃrias profissionais, e quais os desafios encontrados para se legitimarem no espaÃo acadÃmico e cientÃfico. A metodologia adotada parte de uma pesquisa qualitativa mediante a realizaÃÃo de entrevistas semiestruturadas junto Ãs professoras que se autodeclararam negras e que atuam nas instituiÃÃes pÃblicas federais e estaduais, localizadas no interior e na capital do estado do CearÃ. As entrevistas foram divididas em 3 partes: perfil identitÃrio (informaÃÃes gerais da entrevistada), dados sÃcios econÃmicos e histÃria de vida. Paralelo as entrevistas, realizou-se anÃlise do CurrÃculo Lattes de cada professora de modo a identificar o percurso acadÃmico realizado pelas mesmas. Educational innovations, throughout history, have been largely due to the inspired vision and subsequent achievements of a single individual. One such pioneer is Mary Crist Fleming, an American woman, who, in 1955, travelled to Switzerland to run a summer program for a handful of students and then stayed on to found the first American boarding school in Europe, known as TASIS, The American School in Switzerland. With no financial backing, in a country where women had not yet been given the right to vote, she set up a program to offer young Americans the opportunity to enhance their education with the learning oflanguages at first-hand, and experience Europe's artistic and cultural heritage, in a setting chosen for its outstanding beauty. She is now in her ninety-fourth year. Through a series of interviews carried out over the past four years, aimed at describing and explaining this career, with its successes and failures, forms the basis for this dissertation. The lives of three other educational pioneers, the American Mary Lyon, the founder of Mount Holyoke College, the Italian Maria Montessori, creator of the Montessori Schools, and the German Kurt Hahn, who established a holistic style of education at his school in Salem, and later founded Gordonstoun in Scotland, are reviewed and comparisons made between them and Mary Crist Fleming. They all have a number of characteristics in common, which are discussed under three subheadings, namely, Heritage, Achievements, and Legacies. Heritage is essentially Mrs. Fleming's biography, from her childhood in America and her early education there, to her long career in the international arena. The section on Achievements explores those factors, which have been major influences in her life, as well as in the lives of the other three pioneers, including traditional values, social entrepreneurship, risk taking, and charismatic leadership. In the final section, Legacy, each of the four founders' legacies is explored in detail.

The main goal with studies of learning achievements is to obtain research based knowledge about the issue and to make appropriate actions. The aim of this study is to explore some factors which may influence grade 7 students’ learning achievements in science and to compare boys and girls learning achievements in relation to different variables in Urozgan province of Afghanistan. Learning achievements in science and especially in biology is an over studied issue in worldwide research but in the Afghan context much more research is needed to find out what are the factor which may help and promote students learning achievement. This study is carryout in the southern province of Urozgan and the data is collected from schools administration (students final exam scores of 788 students) and student’s views about biology through a questionnaire (84 students field questionnaire). The main finding of this study was that girls have higher average scores compared to boys in biology subject in this sample. Moreover it was found that girls received less support at home than boys enjoyed. This fining also confirms similar studies in the country as well as in the region. In this study some factors which may influence their achievement were looked up on. Those students who enjoy the subject of biology have higher scores than students who don’t find it an enjoyable topic. That those girls who see biology as a "difficult" subject scored higher indicate that they have low self-confidence. Those students whose mothers were educated had higher scores than students with not educated mother. Moreover it was observed that children of educated mothers scored higher than children of educated fathers. This finding, although, self-evidence but still indicate the high value of girls education, especially in educationally poorer rural areas such as Urozgan. This study also confirms that the more experience the teachers have the higher the scores of their students. Another worth mentioning point in this study is that teachers view both boys and girls as equally talented in biology.

Since 1986 and especially during the early 90s, environmental protection has become a constitutional principle in Vietnam as regulated by Articles 17 and 29 of the 1992 Constitution. The first Law on Environmental Protection, passed by the National Assembly on December 27, 1993 created a foundation for environmental legislation becoming an important field in Vietnam’s legal system. In the following, Vietnam enacted its very first Law on Water Resources (No. 08/1998/QH10) in January 1999 aiming to provide a foundational framework for managing the water sector in Vietnam. In recent years, the legislative framework on water resources management has further developed. Important water-related regulations on the guidance and implementation of the Law on Water Resources have been issued and often amended to meet the requirements of the country’s development, and its international integration. To date, Vietnam’s legislation on the water sector consists of a complex system of legal documents issued by different state agencies. Though legislation of water sector management in Vietnam has greatly improved during the last decade, it has obviously not yet come to full fruition. Hence, the paper intends to provide an overview of achievements as well as problems and conflicting issues within Vietnam’s current water sector management legislation

Tiếp theo đó, ngày 20 tháng 05 năm 1998, Quốc hội nước Cộng hòa xã hội Việt Nam khóa X, kỳ họp thứ 3 đã thông qua văn bản luật đầu tiên về tài nguyên nước - Luật Tài nguyên nước số 08/1998/QH10 hình thành một nền tảng pháp lý cho hệ thống pháp luật bảo vệ nguồn tài nguyên nước ở Việt Nam. Trong những năm gần đây, hầu hết các văn bản dưới luật quan trọng và cần thiết cho việc hướng dẫn thi hành Luật Tài nguyên nước đã được ban hành và không ngừng được sửa đổi, bổ sung nhằm đáp ứng nhu cầu phát triển và hội nhập quốc tế của đất nước trong nhiều lĩnh vực khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, khung pháp lý hiện hành về tài nguyên nước ở Việt Nam bao gồm một hệ thống các văn bản quy phạm pháp luật khá phức tạp, nhiều tầng nấc, được ban hành bởi nhiều cơ quan có thẩm quyền khác nhau. This research is based on Middle School Mathematics Project (MSMP) funded by the Interagency Educational Research Initiative through a grant to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Both teacher’s instructional representations and students’ written representations were coded and analyzed to investigate the nature and structure of the representations in teaching fractions, decimals and percents in middle school classrooms in three school districts in Texas. The study further explored the relationship between both the quality and quantity of instructional representations and students’ written representations, and the relationship between students’ written representations and their achievements. This dissertation used a mixed approach utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The data was collected in the first two years of a five-year study. A total of 14 sixth grade mathematics teachers from three school districts in Texas were selected from the MSMP project. Before the actual videotaping procedure, a professional development focusing on multiple representations was held for the teachers. Both pretests and posttests were used to examine the relationship between the structure of students’ written representations and their achievements. The results showed that the both the quantity and quality of teachers’ instructional representations varied a lot. Symbolic representations were the predominant representations in classroom teaching. Structures of instructional representations converge to content sub-constructs rather than format sub-constructs. Here subconstructs include part-whole, measure, quotient, multiplication by one and cross product. Instead, format sub-constructs include real world, manipulatives, pictures, spoken symbolic representations and written symbolic representations, however, connections between these sub-constructs were not statistically significant. Within the three content sub-constructs (part-whole, quotient, and multiplication by one) that revealed by students’ written representations, quotient and multiplication by one significantly predicated the students’ posttest scores. It was also found that, among the three quality criteria (accuracy, comprehensibility and connections) of instructional representations, the comprehensibility score significantly predicated students’ achievement in the posttests.

This paper aims to measure the economic impact of different NBA player achievements on the athletic apparel companies, Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. It looks at players affiliated with the brands who participated in three different events in the NBA from from 2007 to 2017: the All-Star game, the All-NBA awards, and starting lineups in the Finals. Monthly stock returns for each company were calculated for the months the events took place: January, February, May, and June. The return of each company was then regressed on total number of players each company had in the events. Four total regressions were run for the months of January, February, May, and June. Understanding the economic implications of endorsed players participating in these events can help athletic apparel companies draft more cost efficient endorsement contracts.

Abstract Despite decades of research, over 400 million people around the globe suffer from substance abuse and only 10% to 43% maintain abstinence after treatment. Social support, spirituality, self-regulation, and locus of control have all been examined for their efficacy and relationship with successful abstinence outcomes. Conceptually, educational/vocational achievement is believed to contribute to reforming an identity divorced from the previous lifestyle of active addiction. Educational and Vocational achievements as proxies for non-addict identity have only been investigated sporadically. The present study seeks to establish a quantitative link between successful long-term recovery and these types of goal-oriented achievements. A survey was administered to 195 participants in recovery and results showed that those who have achieved an advanced certification, license, or degree since getting clean report almost twice as must clean time as those who did not. Multiple regression revealed that educational/vocational achievement was a significant predictor and the overall model accounted for 49% of the variance in length of abstinence. These findings expose the importance of a neglected component of research in recovery from addiction. Implications include greater emphasis on vocational rehabilitation in recovery and future research should aim to examine and refine this concept further. A deep level approach to learning leads to quality learning outcomes. Teachers should use appropriate teaching strategies to encourage learners to use deep level approaches to learning. The Conceptual Change Model (CCM) approach is one such strategy for the teaching of science concepts. Deep level approaches are a necessity when dealing with a difficult science concept like photosynthesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate Grade 10 learners’ achievements in photosynthesis using the CCM approach in order to minimize misconceptions and develop a broader and deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process in the high school context in a semi-rural South African school. The learners’ attitudes towards the CCM approach in the teaching of Life Sciences were explored. This study aimed to answer the following main question: what are the achievements of Grade 10 learners’ in photosynthesis as core knowledge? The CCM approach included worksheets based on all five steps of the CCM process: commit to an outcome, expose beliefs, confront beliefs, accommodate the concept and extend the concept. The sample consisted of 78 Grade 10 learners. The research was carried out with a quasi-experimental/control group design and lasted for six weeks. The achievement test and questionnaires were used as instruments to collect data. The analyses of results show that experimental and control group’s pre-test academic achievement scores were similar and there was no significant difference between them (p < 0.05), but when the academic achievement of the post-test results of the EG and CG were analyzed, it was clear that there is a significant difference. The results from post-tests suggest that learners from the EG, taught using the CCM approach, show significantly greater achievements in photosynthesis than learners from the CG. In addition, learners from EG show a positive attitude towards Life Sciences after CCM teaching approach, but not from the CG taught using traditional approach. These findings have implications for a science teacher and recommendations are made to improve the teaching of photosynthesis as core knowledge.

As the Earth’s largest single natural resource, the atmosphere is not subject to a comprehensive legal regime yet. This doctoral thesis aims to provide an overview of the condition of the atmosphere and the threats leading to its degradation associated with humans; to clarifying the legal status of the atmosphere according to legal measures for the atmospheric protection; to study the gradual development of the atmospheric protection legal frameworks and instruments under international law, such as work of the international law commission on the protection of the atmosphere, and treaties on combating air pollution and climate change; to proposing a new view of the protection of the atmosphere as a common interest rather than the traditional reciprocity approach.

This thesis investigated the possibility of two metalinguistic factors, one operating at the level of the word, namely phonemic awareness, and one operating at the level of the sentence, namely semantic and syntactic awareness interacting in the initial stages of reading and spelling. Both were assumed to be interacting in the development of reading and spelling in young Maltese speaking children. To investigate this issue, a two year longitudinal study using a sample of 132 children at the ages of four and five years was conducted. The children were seen over two occasions spread over four sessions of testing before they were administered tests for literacy. During these four sessions, measures of phonemic and semantic and syntactic awareness were administered to the subjects. Most of these were administered before the onset of literacy. Standardised intelligence, vocabulary and sentence comprehension and concepts about print tests as well as writer devised measures of visual and verbal short-term memory were also administered to the subjects. Children's literacy development at the end of the two years was assessed through a standardised reading test in Maltese and other measures for reading comprehension, word spelling and guided writing compiled by the writer. The results indicated that explicit phonemic awareness was the metalinguistic factor which affected word level and sentence level processes. Unlike in various studies in the English language, implicit phonemic awareness was not found to affect word level processes. The contribution of semantic and syntactic awareness was weak and statistically insignificant. It appears that the graphophonemic regularity of the Maltese orthographic system renders the implicit phonemic element and the semantic and syntactic element relatively unimportant in accessing the phonemic structure of words and meaning in words and sentences. Explicit phonemic awareness predicted word reading, reading comprehension, spelling and guided writing skills independently of I.Q., vocabulary, sentence comprehension, knowledge about print and verbal and visual short-term memory.
