O presente estudo assume o formato de Relatório de Estágio realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Desenvolvimento e Cooperação Internacional no Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão – Universidade de Lisboa. Este Relatório é o resultado da realização de um estágio curricular na Associação para a Cooperação Entre os Povos (ACEP), sediada em Lisboa. O objetivo do estágio foi analisar o trabalho da ONG na área da boa governação, em~particular o projeto “Sociedade Civil Pelo Desenvolvimento - Mais Transparência,~Melhor Governação” em São Tomé e Príncipe, executado pela ACEP e pela FONG-STP. Como tal, o trabalho proporciona uma contextualização em torno do debate que envolve o conceito de boa governação para melhor enquadrar a análise do projeto supramencionado.
The present study adopts the format of an Internship Report carried out within the Master of International Development and Cooperation at the Higher Institute of Economics and Management – University of Lisbon. This Report is the result of the completion of an internship at the Association of Cooperation Between Peoples (ACEP), based in Lisbon. The goal of the internship was to analyse the work implemented by the NGO in the field of good governance, particularly the project “Civil Society for Development – More Transparency, Better Governance” in São Tomé and Príncipe, carried out by ACEP and FONG-STP. For this purpose, it is provided a contextualization of the debate around the concept of good governance to better frame the analysis of the aforementioned project.

Abstract:

Depuis une vingtaine d'années, l'entreprise québécoise Hydro-Québec est engagée dans le projet de l'Accumulateur à Électrolyte Polymère ACEP. L'avenir de cette technologie apparait riche et prometteur, et ses performances sont proches des attentes les plus exigeantes. Les électrodes sont constituées par une feuille de lithium pour l'anode et- un mélange de polymère et d'oxyde de vanadium pour la cathode. L'électrolyte est, elle aussi, une feuille de polymère. Afin de fabriquer les cellules électrochimiques de cette batterie, Hydro-Québec et ses partenaires se sont intéressés à l'irradiation par faisceau d'électrons de la structure brute constituée de la feuille métallique et des polymères sous forme de solvants. La structure est alors figée par la polymérisation des solvants sous l'action du faisceau d'électrons à haute énergie. L'hétérogénéité de la structure empêche de pouvoir estimer directement la dose déposée dans les couches de polymères, et ainsi de prévoir les conditions d'irradiation optimales. Puisque les méthodes expérimentales ne peuvent fournir que des résultats très limités, le meilleur moyen disponible pour comprendre les phénomènes survenant dans le polymère réside dans la simulation, qui sera faite par la méthode de Monte-Carlo pour ce projet.

The dissertation seeks to understand the relationship of the visually impaired with the radio, and how broadcast content are crucial in everyday social relations and the study group. Part is the assertion that the radio airs daily various aspects of daily life. These aspects are perceived both in radio content, that aims to approximate the listener, in order to gain audience, but also the intimacy generated between the listener and the speaker (the speaker). The research was applied to the Association of the Blind of Piauí (ACEP), focusing on the observation of the regulars that environment, and the interference of the communication medium, radio, in daily relations of the members of the institution. Theoretically, the work is based on studies of radio which include: history, functions and features and Sociology of Everyday Life, with the main theoretical , the Frenchman Michel Meffesoli . The methodological approach is ethnography , divided into three stages of development: application of closed questionnaires ( 100 visually impaired ACEP , exploratory ) , in-depth interview ( conducted with some members of the association and arranged at work) and participant observation ( performed both in the ACEP , as the monitoring of two members for one day ) . The empirical analysis of object points that radio can be seen at various times of daily public studied, this being a decisive factor in socialities and daily make the blind.
A dissertação busca compreender a relação do deficiente visual com o rádio, e como os conteúdos veiculados são determinantes nas relações sociais e cotidianas do grupo em estudo. Parte-se da assertiva, que o rádio leva ao ar diariamente vários aspectos do cotidiano. Esses aspectos são percebidos tanto no conteúdo radiofônico, que objetiva a aproximação do ouvinte, com o intuito de ganhar audiência, como também da intimidade gerada entre quem escuta e quem fala (o locutor). A pesquisa foi aplicada na Associação do Cego do Piauí (ACEP), tendo como foco a observação dos frequentadores daquele ambiente, e a interferência do meio de comunicação, rádio, nas relações cotidianas dos membros da instituição. Teoricamente, o trabalho está fundamentado nos estudos sobre rádio, que englobam: histórico, funções e características e na Sociologia do Cotidiano, tendo como principal teórico, o francês Michel Maffesoli. O procedimento metodológico é a etnografia, dividido em três etapas de desenvolvimento: aplicação de questionários fechados (a 100 deficientes visuais da ACEP, de caráter exploratório), entrevista em profundidade (realizadas com alguns membros da associação e dispostas no trabalho) e observação participante (realizada tanto na ACEP, como o acompanhamento de dois membros durante um dia). A análise do objeto empírico aponta que o rádio pode ser percebido em vários momentos do cotidiano do público estudado, sendo este, um elemento determinante nas socialidades e no fazer diário do cego.

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis is the comparison of selected methods and parameters for roller bearings diagnostics. Selected statistical parameters are kurtosis, crest factor, and parameter K(t). The other selected methods are envelope analysis, cepstral analysis, and ACEP method. These methods are implemented in LabVIEW software and compared based on noise resistance, computation speed, and overall capability of identifying roller bearing faults.

Abstract:

In 1998, a seminal study on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and subsequent health risks catapulted ACEs and the study questionnaire into the zeitgeist. However, its childhood sexual abuse (CSA) item is problematic as it requires the perpetrator have been 5-years or older than the victim. To assess whether some survivors’ CSA is not identified by the current item, whether their exclusion prevents access to services requiring a four-threshold ACE score, and how their health outcomes compared to other CSA groups and controls, an international sample of 974 women completed an online survey assessing their current health and CSA history using the original item and an experimental item without the 5-year modifier. Results indicated many CSA survivors are not identified by a 5-year modifier, exclusion has service implications for some, and on most variables, they had increased adverse health outcomes compared to controls. Means of assessing CSA must be thoughtfully revised.

Abstract:

Objectives: To determine whether treatment of demineralized enamel white spot lesions with CPP-ACP paste, CPP-ACFP paste or microabrasion technique decreases lesion depth in vitro. Additionally, to determine whether treatment of demineralized enamel white spot lesions with microabrasion technique in combination with CPP-ACP paste or CPP-ACFP paste decreases lesion depth greater than any of the three techniques alone. Background: White spot lesions (WSLs) after the removal of orthodontic appliances remain a problem for clinicians and patients. Previous studies suggest that application of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACFP) may promote enamel remineralization. Recently, microabrasion of enamel was proposed as another treatment modality of white spot lesions. A review of literature showed that there was no comprehensive in vitro study that combined microabrasion, casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate and casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate for treatment of WSLs. Methods: A total of one hundred and twelve bovine incisor teeth were randomly assigned to seven treatment groups: 1. Control 1 (demineralization control), 2. Control 2 (remineralization solution control), 3. CPP-ACP paste, 4. CPP-ACFP paste, 5. Microabrasion, 6. Microabrasion with CPP- ACP paste, and 7. Microabrasion with CPP-ACFP paste. Teeth in all groups were placed in demineralizing solution for 96 hours to produce artificial caries-like lesions. At the end of the 96 hr period, teeth in Control 1 group were sectioned to establish adequate amount of demineralization. The rest of samples were treated with assigned regimen once a day for 10 days and stored in remineralization solution. At the end of ten days, teeth were sectioned with a hard tissue microtome and observed under polarized microscopy to analyze enamel lesion depth. One-way ANOVA at α=0.05 was performed to assess difference in lesion depth between groups followed with post hoc Tukey's test. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between groups (pConclusions: Based on the results from this study, we can conclude that: (1) treatment of WSLs with CPP-ACP paste, CPP-ACFP paste or microabrasion decreases lesion depth in vitro; (2) microabrasion in combination with CPP-ACP paste or CPP-ACFP paste did not decrease lesion depth greater than that observed with either paste technique alone; (3) both CPP-ACP and CPP-ACFP pastes in combination with microabrasion treatments showed greater decrease in lesion depth than microabrasion alone.

Abstract:

Aces Crazy! details the story of one-handed navigator Stirrup Milton, the first-person narrator of the story. She leads amnesiac cowboy Crazy Beaumont eastward across a bright, vibrant post-apocalyptic Appalachia in search of a man named Motherfucker, who is connected to Crazy Beaumont’s lost memory. During this journey eastward, the duo are pursued by the bounty hunter who took Stirrup’s hand and murdered her best friend, Bob Dole Desecrator.The novel, first and foremost, is interested in Stirrup, its main character and first-person narrator, chronicling her emotional journey as she deals with the loss of her hand and best friend. In this vein, her narrative voice is heavily influenced by Mattie Ross, the protagonist of Charles Portis’ True Grit. Throughout the first two arcs of the story, the reader follows Stirrup on a quest for revenge, hearing of the origin of her current battered form and witnessing the metastasizing of her obsession grow and contort her relationship with the characters in their traveling party and reader. When that obsession is resolved, the revenge story is complete, but Stirrup’s identity as a result is completely shattered. In the book’s final third, a departure from the linear revenge journey of the prior, Stirrup must create a new identity in the rubble of the old. This novel is primary associated with the western genre, peppered with fantasy elements that help characterize the subtle post-apocalyptic Appalachian world. It also relies on comedy, both physical and witty, to engage the audience, parody its inverted western fictional world, and offer a commentary on the frontier mentality at the heart of the genre. It is, of course, heavily indebted to the classic spaghetti western, and the cowboy’s journey commonly depicted. It also bears influence from the western film genre and film soundtracks, from Neil Young’s soundtrack to Dead Man to Bob Dylan’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. It also is heavily influenced by imagery, in particular the stark action of “Bucking Horse and Rider”, an image trademarked by the state of Wyoming sine 1936 for use on its license plates. At the end of five chapters are links to audio files of a five-episode digital companion to the novel that exists in the same fictional world. The digital companion seeks to expand on the world building elements of the work, while telling the journey of Nathan and Tudor from the wildness to civilization, a story that runs contrapuntal to the novel. During the journey, Nathan and Tudor meet two sister outlaws whose intentions are not initially what they seem, and cross-paths with the Sheriff, a self-anointed lawman bent on bringing justice to the wild, lawless world of Aces Crazy! The themes of the digital companion primarily revolve around the relative nature of criminality, particularly in why crimes are committed and their unintended consequences, as well as the role of firm, unmoving justice in rectifying this essential problem.

This study discusses the establishment of Persatuan Ulama Seluruh Aceh (All Aceh Ulama Association) by a few forward-looking Acehnese 'ulama's and the role that this organization played in educational reforms in Aceh. The educational reforms are discussed in two ways: (1) The actual change in the educational system of the madrasa, and the establishment of a teachers' training school Normal Islam Instituut. (2) The socio-religious changes that contributed to the success of the educational revolution in Aceh.
The thesis discusses the educational changes made by Persatuan Ulama Seluruh Aceh and the impact they had on Aceh during the 1930's and indirectly on modern Aceh.

Resumo: Esse trabalho apresenta uma revisão do processo de codificação de voz baseado em predição linear com excitação por códigos (CELP), assim como um estudo sistemático e aprofundado dos algo ritmos de busca utilizados em dicionários de multi-pulsos algébricos, que caracterizam os codificadores ACELP. Além do estudo de diversos tipos de algoritmos de busca existentes, propõe-se aqui um novo método, denominado de busca seqüencial de posições. Os algoritmos de busca são descritos com uma notação homogênea e representados através de pseudo-códigos. Além disso, são feitas análises dos algoritmos no que diz respeito à complexidade e à qualidade de voz através da inserção dos mesmos nos codificadores G.729 e GSM-AMR, que pertencem respectivamente aos organismos de padronização ITU-T e ETSI. As medidas levantadas mostram que, quando comparado com os algoritmos de busca adotados pelas padronizações atuais de codificação de voz, a busca seqüencial de posições requer um esforço computacional consideravelmente menor, ao custo apenas de uma pequena degradação na qualidade perceptual da voz codificada. Ainda no âmbito da redução do tempo gasto no processo de busca nos dicionários algébricos, este trabalho também apresenta uma análise do impacto da implementação otimizada dos algoritmos de busca no desempenho do codificador como um todo, questão que surge com a utilização de processadores digitais de sinais modernos com alto nível de paralelismo
Abstract: This work presents a review of the code-excited linear predictive (CELP) voice coding scheme, and a detailed and structured study of the search algorithms for algebraic multipulse codebooks (ACELP). In addition to the study of the current algorithms, this work also proposes a new search method, named as position-sequential search. Throughout this work the search algorithms are described using a common notation and represented by pseudo-codes. The computational complexity and perceptual quality of the search algorithms have been measured by the use of the ITU-T G.729 and the ETSI GSM-AMR speech coding standards. The implementations showed that in comparison to standard search procedures the position-sequential search causes only a slight degradation in voice quality, whereas providing a significant reduction in computational complexity. In the sense of reducing the time spent in the search process, this work also analyzes the impact of the optimized implementation of search algorithms on the global performance of the coding process. This question arises in algorithm implementations in modern digital signal processors with a high level of parallelism

Abstract:

The coming of the Portuguese to Malacca in 1511 disrupted the existence of the people of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago, where trade and Islam were the main influences. The Christian European intruders were regarded as both economic competitors and religious enemies. The Muslim kingdoms of the region put up fierce resistance to the Portuguese. The strongest opposition was shown by Aceh. Its response was mainly expression in three aspects; military action, political maneuvering and economic reaction. Jihad (holy war) also played an important spiritual role in the response. This resistance combined with the strategic location of Aceh in the northern tip of Sumatra and the support of other Muslim powers accelerated the rise of Aceh in the sixteenth century.

In the early 1980's and 1990's, companies began to build upon the principles of Total Quality Management and developed there own unique quality systems. The most popular and well known of these systems is Six Sigma that was developed by Motorola and successfully adopted by others such as Allied Signal (now Honeywell) and most notably, General Electric. Six Sigma can be characterized as a highly formalized, process oriented improvement tool that is data focused. The Six Sigma process is normally performed by a diverse team, who attack a quality/process problem by analyzing process variation or in statistical terms, sigma. The foundations of Six Sigma are commitment from upper management, detailed training and a regimented diagnostic approach. Another quality operating system is the less known, but very successful, Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) operating system. This system was developed and is practiced by United Technologies Corporation (UTC). The ACE system is broader based than the Six-Sigma approach, however, ACE is not as data oriented as the Six Sigma approach. ACE revolves around the three principle categories of process improvement and waste elimination tools, decision-making tools, and problem solving tools. These tools impact issues as diverse, but not limited to, factory floor cleanliness, market feedback analysis, machine tool preventative maintenance and set up reduction. ACE is a combination of lean manufacturing and quality improvement philosophies. This paper provides an analysis of both the Six Sigma and ACE Quality Operating Systems. In the paper the systems are compared and contrasted. Further, strengths and weaknesses of each system are discussed. In particular, the analysis focuses on how ACE can leverage elements
(cont.) and aspects of Six Sigma. The analysis concludes that there are elements of Six Sigma that would benefit ACE. The paper identifies that the strength of Six Sigma's statistical approach and its positive impact on process certification could be beneficially applied to the ACE system. Further, there are recommendations for UTC to place more of an emphasis on ACE training and to accelerate its current efforts to better link quality and lean improvement to product engineering and design.

Abstract:

In general this master’s thesis deals with access control methods and their individual modules and in particular with authentication of supplicants. There are listed authentication methods useful in the implementation of the ACP protocol. ACP protocol is also discussed including possibilities and uses. ACP message format is described in detail with AVP format and types. The transaction mechanism is also mentioned here. The main part of the thesis is focused on software design for protocol testing. Possibilities of the testing are discussed and test scenarios are suggested. Consequently, requirements for test software are listed and its implementation is designed. Furthermore, there is technical documentation of the program. The main ideas used in the program are explained in it. The purpose of each part of the program is written including links between them. Finally, there is a manual for the program. It also contains an illustrative example describing how to make and test a simple scenario of the authentication.

Abstract:

The present dissertation studies the Islamic nature of the Acehnese state in the seventeenth century---a subject much neglected by area scholars and Islamicists alike due to the hybrid nature of Southeast Asian Islam. It examines not only the state's Islamic institutions but also its political culture and policies towards Islam. The Acehnese theory of kingship during the period under study manifests a decidedly Islamic character. Deemed to possess both political and religions authority, the office of the sult&dotbelow;an was viewed as necessary and its incumbent responsible for both the prosperity of his people and the enforcement of Islamic dogma. The court's policies towards Islam, given outward expression in elaborate religious rituals and ceremonies, reveal an imperial tradition in which the ruler himself was the head of the Muslim state, despite the apparent admixture of Southeast Asian elements. Other more traditional Islamic institutions were also fundamental to the Acehnese state. The 'ulama' played a significant role in both the religions and political spheres, while Islamic law became a dominant part of the judicial system, alongside adat (customary law and royal edicts/tradition). Jihad as well served to define the ideology of the state. In spite of its Southeast Asian appearance, therefore, the Islamic nature of the Acehnese state was more evident than in many other Muslim states in the region, such as fifteenth-century Melaka and seventeenth-century Mataram, a situation induced by geography, historical Islam, and the nature of Acehnese tradition.

In “Humanitarian Encounters in Post-Conflict Aceh, Indonesia,” I examine the humanitarian involvement in Aceh, Indonesia following two momentous events in Aceh’s history: the earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004 and the signing of the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that brought a tentative, peaceful settlement to the Free Aceh Movement’s (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka, GAM) separatist insurgency against Indonesia on 15 August 2005. My research focuses on the international humanitarian engagement with Aceh’s peace process but frequently acknowledges the much larger and simultaneous tsunami recovery efforts along Aceh’s coasts that preceded and often overshadowed conflict recovery. Using ethnographic data based on five years working with four different international humanitarian organizations concerned with post-conflict recovery in Aceh, I address two main topics in my dissertation. The first is an insider’s perspective on the anthropology of humanitarianism. From one chapter to the next, I recreate and situate a particular humanitarian world’s relation to local structures of power and suffering that expands upon and complicates some of the prevailing debates in the anthropological literature on humanitarianism. From the unique vantage point within various humanitarian organizations, stories of Aceh’s post-conflict recovery filter through with selective and idiosyncratic ethnographic clarity. The accumulation of these stories reveals, by way of mosaic example, a logic of humanitarian intervention. The second topic I address in my dissertation is the story of Aceh’s peace process within the larger context of Indonesia’s post-New Order transition to democracy. I situate my data within a rapidly growing literature of insightful histories and critiques of Aceh’s conflict and subsequent transformations since the tsunami and the formal end of hostilities between GAM and Indonesian security forces. My focus on the ethnographic details in each chapter is set against some of the broadly taken-for-granted histories that have come to define Aceh’s recent successes and failures in its transition to peace.

Nesse contexto, expandiu-se a utilização e criação de ambientes computacionais chamados Learning Management System (LMS), que são ambientes de apoio a EAD com ferramentas de comunicação (forum, email, chat, etc), coordenação (avisos, planos de aula, tarefas, avaliação, acompanhamento de participação, etc), cooperação (whiteBoard, repositório de trabalhos, etc), conteúdo (webcasting, questionários on-line, apresentações), avaliação (provas on-line), pedagógicas (interação com outros participantes, níveis de participação, etc). Além das ferramentas citadas, que são comuns na maioria dos LMS, temos a necessidade de incluir novas funcionalidades nos ambientes EAD, tais como: a criação e o armazenamento de objetos de aprendizagem (Learning Objects) (que são importantes no ensino de exatas: Física, Matemática e Química); ferramentas de áudio e vídeo conferência; simulações .Baseado nessas idéias, analisamos alguns LMS existentes, e essa análise trouxe importantes subsídios para a modelagem e implementação do LMS denominado, Ambiente Computacional de Ensino a Distância (ACED). Para validar e testar o ACED foi implementado o curso de FIS24 - Mecânica de um Sistema de Partículas e Gravitação, curso esse ministrado no departamento de Física do ITA.

Abstract:

Twenty years ago, a seminal study on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and subsequent increased health risks catapulted ACEs into the zeitgeist of research and application. Though a validated construct, the questionnaire, particularly the child sexual abuse (CSA) item is not without limitation and yet is used by the Centers for Disease Control and state agencies to quantify need and allocate resources to services accordingly. Currently, CSA is counted only when the perpetrator is 5-years or older than the victim. This requirement makes neglect of sibling and peer assault very likely. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess whether individuals with CSA experiences within an age gap smaller than 5 years are missed by the 5-year modifier embedded in CSA assessment wording and whether this missed group would otherwise qualify for services if detected. The study also aimed to assess whether this missed group has equivalently poor health outcomes to CSA groups currently captured by the 5-year modifier and whether outcomes for all CSA groups were higher than those who did not have a CSA history. An international sample of 974 women aged 18 to 50 completed an online survey hosted by Reddit regarding their substance use, multiple domains of current health, and CSA history using the original ACEs questionnaire and an experimental version of the CSA item without the 5-year modifier. All statistical analyses were completed in R. Results indicated there was a group of survivors with CSA experiences missed by the 5-year modifier and this had implications for reducing their total ACE scores. This group was nearly equal in size to CSA groups captured by the 5-year modifier and demonstrated equivalently poor health and substance use outcomes. On nearly all variables, CSA groups demonstrated poorer health outcomes than those who had never experienced CSA. These findings suggest the language of how CSA is assessed must be thoughtfully revised to include all CSA experiences as all are equally at risk for adverse outcomes and thus all warrant consideration for services currently afforded those with CSA histories and high ACE scores.

Abstract:

This thesis studies the attitudes of the religious scholars associated with the dayah, the traditional institution of religious learning in Aceh, Indonesia, towards issues of the modernization of Islamic law. In the history of Islamic society in Aceh, these scholars, the 'ulama' dayah, have shown great initiative in guiding their society as it sought solutions to various problems. Their response was not confined merely to religious matters but also extended to the economic, political and social problems.
The impact of modern science and technology has led to many changes in economics, agriculture, medicine, and other fields. All these changes have to be evaluated in terms of their status in Islamic law, because Muslims have always sought to lead their lives in accordance with Islamic teachings. The 'ulama' dayah, have contributed to meeting the challenge of resolving such problems. In formulating their decisions, the 'ulama' dayah usually refer to the standard texts of the four classical schools of Islamic law. The reliance on classical texts is justified by their conviction that present-day 'ulama' are unable to exercise ijtihad independently since they lack the qualifications which have been traditionally demanded of a mujtahid.

Abstract:

How do gender separation and the transition to wind pollination happen in temperate trees? What does the reproductive ecology in the crowns of temperate forest trees look like? These connected questions intrigued researchers before and since Darwin but it is only in the last years that a direct study of the latter question has been enabled. A research crane was used to study the flowering ecology of Fraxinus excelsior, Acer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus and Tilia cordata in Leipzig’s floodplain forest. These species originate from hermaphrodite insect pollinated plant families and exhibit different grades of gender separation and different stages between insect and wind pollination. As they are typical elements of temperate deciduous forests, an ecological comparison of their flowering ecology may shed new light on the evolution of gender separation and wind pollination in this habitat. Using the crane, gender distribution, flowering phenology in relation to microclimate, pollination levels (including pollen tubes in the styles) and fruit set were studied in ca. 200 trees over 2-4 years. Main results are a new appreciation of the sexual system of Fraxinus excelsior as dioecy, of Tilia cordata as andromonoecy and a detailed description of the intricacies of the heterodichogamous sexual system of Acer pseudoplatanus. Several flowering phenological patterns are described in Fraxinus excelsior and Acer platanoides in relation to microclimate in early spring. The role of small arthropods is underlined as gall mites may play a role in gender specialisation in Fraxinus excelsior, gall midges are related to maleness in T. cordata and thrips are probably the pollinators of Acer pseudoplatanus in the stand. Thrips pollination is suggested to be a possible stepping-stone between insect pollination and wind pollination, which may drive the transition in Acer pseudoplatanus and possibly in intensively flowering dominant species in other habitats. The study presents the complexity of the reproductive systems and the strong interdependencies among their elements.

Abstract:

This is a broad, quantitative comparison of 12 maple species, representing both canopy and subcanopy growth forms, grown under two ecologically relevant light environments. The maple seedlings responded mainly to light intensity; light quality plays only a minor role in the induction of shade characteristics. While a light-mediated trade off between light and dark reactions of photosynthesis was evident at the chloroplast level, this did not lead to similar differences in assimilaton rates. Gap-grown seedlings showed no apparent compromise in photosynthetic response to dim light and lightflecks. Seedlings of subcanopy trees trade off wood strength for increases in plant size while canopy seedlings sacrifice plant size for wood strength. The demand for greater wood strength in seedlings of canopy trees appears to pose a strong developmental constraint that delays maturation. Free of this constraint, subcanopy species can devote more resource to reach adult size quickly and at an earlier age.

The levels of ACE2 at the cell surface are regulated by cleavage at the plasma membrane Angiotensin-converting-enzyme-2 (ACE2) acts as the protective arm of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). ACE2 counterbalances the actions of ACE by metabolising the catalytic product of ACE, angiotensin 11 (Ang 11), a vasoconstrictor into Ang-(1-7), a vasodilatory peptide. ACE2 has been found to mediate effects, independently of Ang-(1-7), through non-catalytic actions. The aim of this study was to use cell biology to identify factors regulating ACE2 expression and investigate a potential non-catalytic interaction with integrin β1. Cells endogenously expressing ACE2, Huh7 cells, and HEK cells overexpressing ACE2 or tACE were used to probe for an interaction between the angiotensinases and integrins. Both ACE and ACE2 were found to bind integrin subunits, in an RGD-independent manner and they can act as cell-adhesion substrates. The cellular expression of ACE2 on the cell-surface was found to co-localise with integrin β1 and to enhance cell adhesion. Furthermore, treatment of cells with purified ACE2 but not Ang-(1-7), resulted in suppression of integrin signalling mediated by FAK in Huh7 cells. These results suggest that ACE2 plays a role in cell-cell interactions, possibly acting to fine-tune integrin signalling. Hence the cell surface location of ACE2 may be important for some of its protective effects. ( shedding) and levels of this shed form of ACE2 have been correlated with myocardial dysfunction. Herein it is shown that, Ang 11 acts as an endogenous stimulus of shedding by upregulating the expression of ADAM17 at the cell membrane in Huh7 cells. As such, it is possible that some of the pathological effects of Ang 11 are mediated through disruption of integrin signalling caused by a loss of ACE2 at the cell membrane. Although, understanding the control of ACE2 expression is of therapeutic relevance to diseases including cardiovascular and acute respiratory diseases, few studies have investigated the cellular regulation of ACE2. Several factors regulating ACE2 expression in Huh7 cells were identified in this thesis, including up-regulation by a proinflammatory cytokine and modulation by the action of a microRNA. Furthermore, it was found that the expression of ACE2 transcript was modified by hypoxic conditions and cell energy-stress, suggesting regulation by AMP kinase. Energy-stress-induced increases in ACE2 expression were determined to be under the control of SIRT1.
