Kartomi, Margaret. Changes in the Lament Dances in Aceh. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036712.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines changes in Acehnese lament dances, with particular emphasis on the ways in which aspects of religion, ethnicity, class, gender, sociopolitical conditions, and the activities of some remarkable individual women have enabled the survival of song-dances such as manoe pocuk, malelang, and phô over the past three to four centuries. It also considers how individual women have transformed the meaning and style of phô to become a symbol of female Acehnese identity. The manoe pocuk, malelang, and phô song-dances are performed at life-event ceremonies such as weddings, baby thanksgivings, circumcisions, and vow fulfillment ceremonies. A shaman assists the host of the feast to engage the services of a group of singer-dancers by uttering invocations before the betel-nut preparations are exchanged with the group's leader. The chapter shows how references to the indigenous religion and Hinduism are made in some performances of all three song-dances, but with phrases and references added that reflect the people's strong adherence to Islam.

Kartomi, Margaret. “Only if a Man Can Kill a Buffalo With One Blow Can He Play a Rapa’I Pasè”. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036712.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines how the ergology and morphology of the variants of the rapa'i Pasè, the largest kind of frame drum in Aceh, relate to its performance practice, the genres in which it is used, the cultural memory, and the sense of Acehnese cultural identity among its makers, performers, and audiences. The rapa'i Pasè was traditionally played in ensembles with the singing of improvised texts at lifecycle and religious feasts and in intervillage competitions. It is said that only a man who can kill a buffalo with one sharp blow can play a rapa'i Pasè. This chapter first considers the defining and distinctive elements of Acehnese identity in its connection to rapa'i before discussing the loss of thousands of rapa'i Pasè during Aceh's armed conflict of 1976–2005. It also describes the attempts by Indonesian governments to appropriate, secularize, and aestheticize rapa'i and other forms of the traditional arts, as well as the various elite and nonelite views of identity.

Wurmbrand, Susi, and Koji Shimamura. The features of the voice domain: actives, passives, and restructuring. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767886.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an in-depth characterization of the organization and featural make-up of the voice domain. Using restructuring as a probe into the composition of the voice domain, several properties are revealed which provide new or additional support for a number of voice-related assumptions, such as a split voice domain consisting of VoiceP and vP. It is suggested that the heads of the voice domain come with two sets of features, v/Voice-features and ϕ‎-features, where the former encode differences such as active and passive, as well as specific flavors of the argument or event introducing heads, and the latter identify a DP (the DP valuing the ϕ‎-features) as an argument of the particular voice head. The chapter proposes detailed structures for passive and restructuring, including morphological spell-out rules for the heads of the voice domain in several languages (Acehnese, Chamorro, Isbukun Bunun, German, Japanese, Mayrinax Atayal, Norwegian, and Takibakha Bunun).
