Abstract:
In manifold ways science and practice are working together to find solutions for sustainable land management. New research programmes on this topic generate a large variety of single project results. Accompanying research projects will realize additional value by merging and synthesising the results from these projects and by supporting the generation of new knowledge for science and society. For many actors in science and policy, the additional value of research accompanying research projects remains open. Referring to a recent publication in GAIA that introduces a typology for accompanying research (AR), this article discusses the central issues, content, processes and ongoing challenges in an AR project accompanying the German research programme Sustainable Land Management. The important value of AR can be seen in communication, networking, the reflexive generation of new knowledge and knowledge management based on trust building and competence. AR also exhibits great potential for research on cross-cutting issues in research programmes and has special significance for meta-studies on different research projects taking place under similar funding conditions. However, additional analyses are necessary for a better understanding of the outcomes and impacts of AR and to create wider appreciation and acceptance.

Abstract:
Introduction. Two-phase flow transmission is a complex process exposed to the influence of numerous factors. Its characteristics may depend on the physical properties of a flowing medium and on the properties of a pipeline, flow velocities, etc. A research into new types of hydraulic systems serves to identify the parameters that characterize the processes that accompany their transmission, especially if a multi-component flow is analyzed (a mix of water and abrasive particles). The mission of the research is to identify the value of hydraulic resistance coefficient in the course of transmission of a two-phase flow, or a mix of water and an abrasive. Materials and methods. A physics experiment, mathematical data processing methods, data description. Results. The co-authors have identified the hydraulic resistance coefficient value in the course of the mix transmission, as well as the parameters characterizing supplementary pressure losses in the course of the abrasive transmission. The experimental research enabled the co-authors to identify maximal water and mix application distances that reach 317 and 290 meters. Conclusions. The results, obtained by the co-authors, are the consequence of the pressure losses that occur in the course of mix transmission and the coefficients that characterize it. The flows considered in the article are used in the systems whose parameters are considerably different from those of traditional hydraulic engineering systems; therefore, any theoretical results obtained by the co-authors need experimental verification. Further, similar systems having different parameters must also be exposed to research to identify the relation between the pressure loss and the abrasive consumption rate and amount. The practical value of the research consists in the identification of maximal water and mix transmission and application distances providing that the operating parameters of the systems remain unchanged.

Abstract:
The aim of our research, which is essentially comprehensive, is to describe certain features of the professional development of novice teachers during the course of a mentoring scheme. It is interested in what discursive movements reveal during language interactions between peers and between peers and researchers, interactions centred on elements of their practice as well as on the theory/practice links. In our study, the analysis of practice is based on a didactic scenario relating to an independent writing workshop. The theoretical dimensions mobilised by the participants relate to the multiagenda model (Bucheton, Soulé, 2009) and the notion of gesture (professional, didactic, adjustment, study and learning). Ultimately, our results should provide input for teacher training schemes, by linking analysis of practice to contributions from disciplinary and professional didactics

Full text
Abstract:
The project comprises a novel with the working title, General Yueh Fei, and an accompanying exegesis. The novel is a work of the historical fused with elements of fantasy, exploring the life and times of China's national hero, and the project comes to focus on Yueh Fei's sense of patriotism and his battles against the invading barbarians. Narrated by the ghost of the protagonist, the novel also examines the emotional conflict within Yueh Fei himself and between him and two other main characters within the Imperial Court. Central to the conflict is the effect on the protagonist of the fall of the capital city, Kaifeng, that split China into Northern and Southern Sung following a humiliating peace treaty with the barbarians. The novel is written in the first person narrative mode and describes these fictionalized historical events and the surrounding circumstances that culminated in the arrest and murder of General Yueh Fei and his son, Yueh Yun. The exegesis is an informed reflection on the novel, calling on critical and theoretical thinking relevant to the writing in English of a Chinese based historical romance novel as well as cognate works in fiction and film. It gives an account of what inspired the work and the sources drawn on in creating it, positioning the work generically and exploring its theoretical basis and affiliations including the related issue of the Orientalism/authenticity nexus in the historical romance novel.

Jackson, Jennifer Gouws. "Changes in endosome-lysosome pH accompanying pre-malignant transformation." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5511.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanisms by which altered processing, distribution and secretion of proteolytic enzymes occur, facilitating degradation of the extracellular matrix in invasive and metastatic cells, are not fully understood. Studies on the MCF-10 A breast epithelial cell line and its premalignant, c-Ha-ras-transfected MCF-10AneoT counterpart have shown that the ras-transfected cell line has a more alkaline pH. The objective of this study was to determine which organelles of the endosome-lysosome route were alkalinized and shifted to the cell periphery after ras-transfection. Antibodies to the hapten 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP), required for pH studies, were raised in rabbits and chickens using DNP-ovalbumin (DNP-OVA) as immunogen. Cationised DNP-OVA (DNP-catOVA) was also inoculated to increase antibody titres. Anti-hapten and carrier antibody titres were assessed. In rabbits, cationisation seems useful to increase anti-DNP titres if a non-self carrier protein (OVA) is used. In chickens, cationisation of DNP-OVA seems necessary to produce a sustained anti-OVA (anti-self) response (implying a potential strategy for cancer immunotherapy). Oregon Green® 488 dextran pulse-chase uptake and fluorescent microscopy, and (2,4-dinitroanilino)-3'-amino-N-methyldipropylamine (DAMP) uptake, immunolabelling for DNP (a component of DAMP) and unique markers for the early endosome (early endosome antigen-I, EEAI), the late endosome (cation-independent mannose-6-phosphate receptor, CI-MPR) and the lysosome (small electron dense morphology and lysosome-associated membrane protein-2, LAMP-2) and electron mlcroscopy was performed. The pH of late endosomes and lysosomes in the ras-transfected MCF-10AneoT cell line were found to be relatively alkalinised and Iysosomes shifted toward the cell periphery. The acidic pH of late endosomes is required to release precursor cysteine and aspartic proteases from their receptors (e.g. CI-MPR), process the precursors to active proteases and to allow receptor recycling. The more alkaline pH observed potentially explains the altered processing of proteases in rastransfected cells. Alkalinisation ofthe cytosol may affect the cytoskeleton responsible for, among other things, the positioning and trafficking of various organelles, causing relocation of Iysosomes toward the cell periphery and actin depolymerisation. This may enable fusion of Iysosomes with the plasma membrane and the release of proteolytic enzymes, facilitating the observed invasive phenotype.

The research is to study the course transition and experience when main carers accompany vegetables through the guidance of interpreting phenomenology and purposive sampling, selecting three research participants from Taipei County, Tainan County, and Pingtung County respectively. After depth interview of semi-structured questionnaire, text information was obtained and visualized comprehensive analysis was conducted. As for research results, it was aimed at the mental and physical burden of main carer under the condition of accompanying patients, and existence correlation to conduct thoughtful description and interpretation in experience so as to present the concrete meaning of accompanying course transition of main carers for vegetables. The research found that when main carers took care of vegetables’ life, they faced: two crucial issues, namely, accompanying course transition and readiness; display and construction of existence correlation. It was found from the former that main carers needed to bear not only innermost depression and sorrow in the initial situation of great life change, but also physical burden due to care works, including different extents of care works; besides increasing physical burden at this time, main carers also had great changes in time and space, and then home became a narrow living hell while facing permanent situation of care works; the connection between carers in three-dimensions of time and vegetables in the sequence of space-time is derived accordingly. It was found from the latter that when discussing the existence correlation between main carers and vegetables thoroughly, three significant concepts in texts were: certain existence of care relationship, inside information of cultural relationship and re-connection of social relationship. The certain existence of care relationship revealed the real scene of care existence between carers and patients. In addition, cultural relationship also had a deep impact on care existence. However, no one can deny that the family with a vegetable cannot just live in the world of the family, and it must connect with the society. They have to live in the society and find the replacement of social relationship between themselves and the society. As a whole, the situation of main carer who accompanies patients presented the mode of dynamic changes and every substance showed different experiences. Moreover, the research proposed the ethic issue of euthanasia, the influence of religious belief, and deeper social welfare policies as references and choices for others of another study field.

Abstract:
The monograph examines the peculiarities of the formation and development of the idea of light, which originated in Byzantine Orthodoxy and became a characteristic feature of Russian culture. The ancient Russian pagan worldview defined light as a vital property of nature, as a sacred creative energy striving to pour out. After the adoption of Orthodoxy, light did not lose its transformative characteristics, moving into the spiritual sphere and becoming an accompanying attribute and testimony of holiness. It is intended both for students for educational purposes, including for the preparation of scientific research for graduate students, and for a wide range of readers interested in the problems of cultural history.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how the pharmaceutical industry’s actions affected the accomplishments of the Decade of Pain Control and Research, which began on January 1, 2001, following almost two decades of rising concern over the inadequate treatment of chronic pain in the United States. To tell the story of this decade we must describe the accompanying problem of drug diversion and abuse. The development in 1995 of a new opioid product called OxyContin, its aggressive marketing, the morbidity and mortality associated with its misuse, and the eventual felony conviction in 2007 of the drug’s sponsor for fraudulent claims and marketing practices, affected the Decade in unexpected ways. The response by Congress and the regulatory community to what they termed an “epidemic” of prescription drug abuse produced long-lasting policy changes. The chapter also touches on the peculiar and sometimes troubling relationship between the regulators and the regulated.

Abstract:
AbstractSocietal transformations, as fundamental change of socio-ecological and socio-technical systems towards more sustainability and justice, are high on scientific and political agendas. Transformational sustainability research seeks to understand and develop solutions to persistent problems of unsustainability. Examples include real-world and urban living labs, transition management or transdisciplinary case studies. These address problems in complex systems in future-oriented and participatory ways and catalyze learning and innovation integrating diverse forms of knowledge. Yet, transformation-oriented research faces various challenges with regard to knowledge production, process facilitation and decision-making. This chapter presents accompanying research—research that accompanies and researches others’ research—to effectively complement and support transformation-oriented research. First, possible contributions of accompanying research regarding knowledge production and process management are discerned and related methods and techniques are illustrated. Second, possibilities to shape relationships between accompanied and accompanying research are outlined and core balancing acts characterizing these relations discussed. Again, orientation is given to shape relations in practice. To map contributions and relationships, the chapter builds on expert knowledge and scholarly literature, synthesizing it with practical experiences including from accompanying several German real-world laboratories. Third, an in-depth case study of accompanying a long-running transdisciplinary experiment at UNFCCC climate change conferences, the Co-Creative Reflection and Dialogue Space, is reflected showing the value and challenges of accompanying research in practice.

Abstract:
AbstractFilm and text can be complementary modes of theory formation in the field of migration studies. If the theoretical potential of filmmaking is recognized in research, this also opens opportunities for teaching migration theory through film. This argument is illustrated here through the project Living like a common man, in which both film and text were used to observe, analyse, and theorize the migration experiences of young Indians to the UK - as ‘middling migration’. The resulting film offers a stand-alone argument that is used as teaching material in courses of migration studies; while accompanying texts make the argument explicit and clarify its significance for migration scholarship.

AbstractThe previous chapters have analysed the difficulties a patient may face in purchasing a medicine, even though supported by the prescription and the information he or she may receive, in written or verbal form, from the doctor during the examination and from the pharmacist during dispensing of the medicine. However, some medicines do not need to be prescribed by the doctor but can be purchased independently by the patient. In these cases, even more so than in the case of medicines dispensed on prescription, it is necessary for the information accompanying the medicine to be comprehensive, understandable and to make certain information available to the patient before the medicine is purchased. This is the case here with over-the-counter analgesics.

Abstract:
AbstractChapter 10.1007/978-3-030-91971-9_3 examined the gendered nature of a migrant division of labour. In this chapter we turn to family migration, traditionally associated with women as dependents and followers of men. The term is used to categorise the international movement of people who migrate due to new or established family ties. People moving for family reasons constitute the largest group of migrants entering OECD countries, ahead of labour and humanitarian migration (OECD, 2019). To move for family reasons may encompass an array of different kinds of migration trajectories, from the adoption of a foreign child to family members accompanying migrant workers or refugees, as well as people forming new family units with host country residents or family reunification (when family members reunite with those who migrated previously).

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter offers a critical reframing of how migration decision-making can shift between partners over time and space. Told through the lens of the female spouse within two heterosexual migrant couples, the chapter shows how experiences of mobility are not just shaped by individuals’ social positionality but also by the complex intersections between their classed, gendered, religious and racialised identities and that of their partners. The literature on middling migration has often been a story of male-led labour migration, with women occupying the status of the accompanying migrant. Less attention is paid to the experiences of migrant women, particularly those who first relocate on family or spousal visas but who seek to re-negotiate gender-differentiated career progression over time and through multiple relocations. Through a detailed biographical case study of two couples, this chapter seeks to capture the shifts in their trajectories, attachments and decision-making that occur spatially, temporally and relationally to show the diverse experiences and statuses that constitute the often-homogenised category of ‘the middle’.

Abstract:
Changes in brand ownership resulting from cross-border mergers and acquisitions impact competition and consumer welfare. Foreign acquisitions of local brands often lead to an increase in cost or a decline in appeal for the acquired brand, with limited gains in efficiencies. However, the accompanying rise in market power has translated into higher profits for the majority of brand-acquiring firms. Pro-competitive policies in the United States and European Union that required divestitures in the beer industry as a condition for merger approval led to significant consumer savings. Similar policies in South America would have reduced consumer prices by 18%.
