Borden, David Scott. "The application of social marketing to promote water efficiency in the tourism accommodation industry." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/27056.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aimed to critically appraise the nature and application of social marketing to promote water efficiency within tourism accommodation. Social marketing is the use of standard marketing techniques to change behaviour for a social goal. Efforts to promote water efficiency in this context are needed as it has been acknowledged that the tourism industry generally increases per capita water consumption per individual. To alleviate this issue, research engaged a diversity of stakeholders, unique to similar past efforts, through four stages of research. Stages One and Two engaged managers of tourism accommodation in focus groups and interviews. Managers reported a high interest in changing guest behaviour but emphasized the guest experience was paramount. They identified that most initiatives aiming to promote water efficiency in the existing literature were not viable within their operations and instead they offered new ideas for engaging both guests and fellow managers. In Stage Three, an online questionnaire was conducted with 408 individuals. Results showed significant changes in most water behaviours, though not all, between home and away, indicating promoting efficiency is needed in both sites of practice. Through cluster analysis, three types of water users within the tourism accommodation were identified. Each segment displayed distinct water use patterns and willingness to participate in initiatives. The final stage engaged a panel of experts in a Delphi consultation aiming to discover consensus on evaluating and prioritizing possible initiatives emerging from previous stages. This is the first application of a Delphi consultation, for this purpose, within the field of social marketing. In addition to recommending the pursuit of certain initiatives to practitioners, the research also yielded several theoretical contributions. Primarily, there is a strong need to standardize the process and unit of analysis for measuring water consumption within tourism accommodation. Secondly, the size, type and clientele base of the business are important factors in considering water efficiency initiatives and therefore social marketing campaigns would be best designed specific to the individual needs of a particular business and not generalized across the industry. Additionally, campaigns to promote water efficiency in tourism accommodation should apply the established theories of modelling, norms creation and social capital. In general, less attention on individual actions and instead larger upstream issues affecting targeted behaviours would enable greater water savings. Finally, the Delphi consultation is recommended as an effective tool for prioritizing and evaluating social marketing initiatives.

Clegg, Andrew John. "The recession as an agent in the restructuring of tourist accommodation." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/392.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic research into economic restructuring in the tourist industry has solely focused on the strategies adopted by large chain hotel companies and little attention has been paid to the strategies adopted by small scale, family-run accommodation establishments. This sector is particularly significant for traditional resort areas in the UK. For example, in Torbay, Devon (as in most seaside resorts), there is an absence of large chain hotels and small-scale accommodation establishment pl ay an integral role in the local tourism economy.Consequently, an understanding of the competitive pressures and restructuring strategies in this sector is essential in maintaining the long-term health and prosperity of the resort. The aim of this study is therefore to examine the restructuring process occurring in the hotel industry and, in particular, to focus on the restructuring strategies in the small-scale accommodation s ector. To do so, this study will draw on empirical data obtained from a number of sources including a commercial register, holiday accommodation brochures, planning applications and a major questionnaire survey of all serviced and self-catering accommodation establishments o perating in Torbay. This study will show that the restructuring process within the accommodation sector has been influenced by a combination of factors within the internal and external resort environment, including free market forces and public sector intervention. Restructuring strategies have concentrated on the development of ensuite and leisure facilities, although provision has been influenced by the structural and locational characteristics of accommodatione stablishments. A review of the entrepreneurial characteristics of the accommodation providers highlights the complexity of the decision-making process and that business strategy is influenced by highly personalised and individualistic operating characteristics that are difficult to isolate and analyse. Therefore, any policy directives to guide the future development of the resort will depend on dealing with individual managemen strategies and business objectives.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the customer experience in hotels. The thesis evaluates the customer experience in relation to the antecedents of behavioural loyalty. Behavioural loyalty is evaluated in relation to customer satisfaction, brand trust and brand attitude. Customer satisfaction is also evaluated in relation to the antecedents of hotel performance, service quality and perceived value. The broad research underpinning this research is: How do consumers perceive and relate to luxury and first class hotel brands? The hotel industry is a large and highly diverse industry that includes a wide range of property styles, uses and qualities (Chon & Sparrowe, 2000; Go & Pine, 1995; Olsen, 1996; Powers & Barrows, 1999). The industry covers the spectrum of small, medium and large enterprises (Brotherton, 2003; Jones, 2002) and makes a significant contribution to national and international economies. The research incorporated data collection in three stages. The first stage was a qualitative study of consumers who self selected as first class or luxury consumers. The data from the focus groups were used to develop items for inclusion in a survey instrument. The focus groups data, together with information gathered from a literature review, were used to develop scales across a number of hotel performance dimensions. In addition scales were included in the survey instrument on customer satisfaction, perceived value, brand trust, brand attitude and behavioural loyalty. The second stage of the research was a pilot study with the survey instrument being distributed to a convenience sample. The data collected at this stage were used to purify and refine the survey instrument. The final stage was data collected from consumers in a number of Australian hotels. The resultant data set comprised 693 completed and useable responses. The data were examined using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to confirm the hotel performance and other dimensions. The resultant dimensions showed good psychometric properties. A number of hypotheses were proposed in the thesis and examined using structural equation modelling. Although two hypotheses were rejected the resultant structural model showed strong relationships between the dimensions included. The research identified that service quality is a strong contributor to behavioural loyalty. The stronger pathway from service quality to behavioural loyalty was through customer satisfaction ( = 0.63) although the pathway through brand attitude ( = 0.22) was also significant. Both customer satisfaction and service quality had a significant effect on brand trust and service quality also influenced brand attitude. A number of recommendations for further research were made. These included the replication of this study in different geographic and industry contexts.

Abstract:
The visiting friends and relatives segment has not been given much study, because the segment has been perceived as small and with no positive economic impact on destinations. This is because of the belief that VFR travelers sleep and eat at their friends’ and relatives’ houses. Lately, the definition of VFR travelers has been changing due to more studies in the area. The results of these studies have shown that the size of the segment has been underestimated, as has the economic impact the segment has on a destination. This thesis is a complement to Bischoff and Koenig-Lewis study ”VFR Tourism: the Importance of University Students as Hosts”. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how students at Umeå university affect the tourism industry in Umeå. The thesis aims to study the frequency of visits made by the students’ friends and relatives, seasonal distribution of the visits, visitor motives, and economic factors linked to these visits. The study is based on a questionnaire survey with closed-ended questions. The study was conducted through descriptive statistical analysis of the questionnaire. Results of the study indicates that the main reason for friends and relatives to visit students in Umeå is to be with the student in question. Most of the VFR travelers stay at their host’s place, with only a few percent using commercial accommodation. Instead VFR travelers have more economic impact on restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

Nannelli, Martina. "Competitiveness and Sustainability in the Sharing Economy Era. Opportunities and challenges from the Tourism and Hospitality Accommodation Industry." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11572/299831.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sharing Economy is an innovative social, economic and technological paradigm which is shaping worldwide production and consumption patterns of many industries. Its strength relies on factors of competitiveness such as the use of idle capacity, temporary access to resources without transfer of ownership, the flexibility and adaptability of its models, and the participation of a growing number of players allowed by peer-to-peer digital platforms. From the management perspective, the conditions for lasting competitiveness lies on sustainability, the paradigm integrating the supply, demand, and technological dimensions in a holistic, or ecosystem, perspective. Tourism is among the industries making extensive use of sharing digital platforms and experiencing changes that foster the sustainability debate. The PhD Thesis aims to investigate the relationships between competitiveness and sustainability in the tourism and hospitality accommodation industry in the Sharing Economy Era. Its investigation is multifaced and is addressed through three studies adopting a post-modernist perspective that builds on qualitative approaches and strategies for data collection and analysis. The Part I of the Thesis explores the Sharing Economy concept’s evolution and the sustainability issues through an in-depth review of the literature. Results reveal the leading economic-technological evolution of the paradigm over the social one, and its dual links with sustainability in relation to the extensive use of peer-to-peer digital platforms. Therefore, the evolution of the Sharing Economy activities have shown that today competitiveness is built on the interactions of an ever-increasing number of actors and factors, both off-line and on-line, within a complex ecosystem for the creation of – shared – value. The tourism industry strongly challenges this relationship between extended competition and sustainability. The Part II evaluates the competitiveness model and its evolution during the Sharing eTourism Era in the tourism and hospitality accommodation sector introducing an ecosystem perspective for the creation and distribution of shared value. Specifically, it investigates how the non-traditional and informal tourist services have affected the structure of the industry and have altered the competition among the actors, through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Results show that competitiveness is given by the balance among the complex interactions of internal and external ecosystem’s actors and factors. On a micro level this imply that businesses must adopts an ecosystem vision compensating for negative externalities which translate into the adoption of Business Models promoting sustainability for the creation of sustainable shared value. Therefore, the Part III investigates through the use of an illustrative case study how peer-to-peer digital platforms in the tourist accommodation service can boost profitability while strengthening economic, social and environmental sustainability by applying the innovative Business Model for Sustainability. The research sheds light on the complex Sharing Economy literature and lays the theoretical foundations for the implementation of managerial strategies aimed at promoting extended sustainable competition-cooperation.

Hunter, Peter Mathew. "A critical analysis of current housing and accommodation practices in the gold mining industry : the case of JCI." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17315.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 120-128.
This study outlines and discusses recent changes in employer housing practices in the South African gold mining industry. Beginning in the 1970s, but more particularly in the 1980s, a number of factors compelled employers to introduce alternatives to the system of hostel accommodation. South African migrant workers now have access to a broader range of housing options including home ownership schemes and off-mine rental schemes. These initiatives are critically examined and their implications for workers and the migrant labour system are assessed. A general overview of the housing policies of the six major mining groups is provided, with a more detailed focus on the labour practices of Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Limited. At present, participation rates in management devised accommodation schemes remain low. It appears that existing schemes do not fully meet the needs and preferences of migrant workers. Affordability and migrant attitudes towards permanent relocation to the urban areas are two important considerations in this regard. A number of other obstacles to the implementation of a flexible housing model for the African workforce are identified. A central conclusion of this study is that progress towards a locally housed industry workforce will continue to be slow. The migrant labour system will undergo further transformation, but will continue as the central form of labour supply to the mines.

Von, Lengeling Volkher Heinrich Christoph. "The nexilitas factor: host-guest relationships in small owner managed commercial accommodation facilities in contemporary South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002656.

Full text
Abstract:
The commercialization of hospitality established arguably the oldest profession. Historically small commercial hospitality establishments, known as inns in the western world, were of ill repute. Perhaps connected to their reputation, this category of accommodation facility has been seriously neglected as an area of academic inquiry, particularly from the perspective of the host. While there has been a huge growth in the interdisciplinary field of tourism studies in recent decades, little attention has been paid to the role of the host in the host-guest relationship at whatever level of analysis. This thesis seeks to redress the balance. Hospitality is a basic form of social bonding. This type of bonding, where a hierarchy between strangers is implicit (as with hosts and guests), may be termed ‘nexilitas’; nexilitas is a form of social bonding in liminal circumstances. To that extent it is comparable to ‘communitas’ which describes social bonding between equals in certain liminal circumstances. The difference is that nexilitas is a form of bonding between individuals in a complex power relationship. The host controls the hospitality space, but custom also empowers the guest with certain expectations, especially in the commercial context. The thesis identifies the various forms of hospitality – traditional ‘true’ or ‘pure’ hospitality, social hospitality, cultural hospitality and commercial hospitality – and discusses these critically in their historical and cross-cultural contexts, with emphasis on the perspective of the host. The passage of hospitality is then traced through the three phases of preliminality, liminality and post-liminality and discussed along the themes anticipation, arrival and accommodation and finally departure of the guest. While the historical and ethnographic review is mainly based on written histories and the experiences of other anthropologists as guests as well as ethnographers, the passage of hospitality draws on the multi-sited auto-anthropological experiences of the author, both as host and as ethnographer of contemporary South African hosts in small owner-managed commercial hospitality establishments.

Eliasson, Erik. "In Search of the Holy Grail : A Case Study of the Implementation of Sustainable Practices in the Accommodation Industry in Siem Reap, Cambodia." Thesis, Umeå University, Umeå School of Business, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-1344.

Abstract:

Cambodia differs from many other developing countries because of one specific asset which is tourism. The number of tourists in Cambodia is currently growing with a rapid pace due to the Angkor site near the city of Siem Reap.

The growing number of tourists has definitely created challenges for the accommodation industry in the Siem Reap region. This has created the need for achieving a delicate balance between the exploration of the region and how much the region can cater for regarding the environment, social and long-term economical benefits. This growth has however brought along many downsides such as economical, environmental, social, cultural, political, and technological. There are no previous studies done about sustainable practice in the accommodation industry in developing countries. This study examines the barriers for the implementation of sustainable practice among accommodation providers in Siem Reap.

The first step is this process was to determine the state of the environment. The second step was to determine the cause of the state followed by determining the process of change for sustainable development which can be regarded as the barriers. Previous studies have concluded that barriers of financial difficulties, the cost of change, lack of resources, the lack of information and support regarding sustainable tourism are common barriers for the implementation of sustainable practice. The barriers can be categorized into industry barriers related to industry specific characteristics and organizational barriers that refer to barriers due to characteristics within the firm.

This report is based on a case study in which hermeneutic and qualitative method was used. The data was based on a content analysis of reports published by the International Development Centre of Japan in cooperation with the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism and 14 interviews with accommodation providers in Siem Reap.

In many areas there was a lack of sustainable practices and many barriers could be uncovered. Barriers included among others lack of financial resources which restricted ownership, low awareness of the environmental state, lack of governmental support; an insufficient educational quality which limits management opportunities for Cambodians and insufficient quality in the environmental friendly products.

This study has expanded the knowledge of barriers for the implementation not only to include environmental sustainable practices but also to include barriers when it economical, social, cultural, political and technological dimensions. These barriers should be considered representative for barriers for the implementation of sustainable practices in the accommodation industry in developing countries, especially in contexts with a similar development pattern as Siem Reap.

CHAHINE, SALIM, and HENRIK DANIN. "Is the Sharing Economy an Opportunity or a Threat? : A Case Study on the Swedish Hotel Industry." Thesis, KTH, Industriell Management, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-236513.

Full text
Abstract:
The act of sharing goods and services is not a new or revolutionary concept in any way. In the internet age, the phenomenon of what has been titled the “sharing economy” has emerged, and touched many different industries and researchers around the world. Incumbent industries, operating in traditional manners, are in today’s society experiencing a pressure to transform. The hotel industry, in particular, is facing the tension of the customers’ shifting behavior, from staying at hotels to using accommodation sharing services instead, such as Airbnb. This study therefore seeks to explore how the sharing economy is impacting the hotel market. A question that has guided the research reads; Is the phenomenon, to the hotel industry, an opportunity or a threat? The research can be followed through a conducted explorative case study on the sharing economy’s manifestation in the Swedish hotel market, which encompasses an exploration of how hotel actors are perceiving and reacting to accommodation sharing. The case is based on gathered data from reviewing written material and conducting qualitative, semi-structured interviews with hotel actors, experts on the hotel industry and experts on the sharing economy. The empirical material has been complemented and processed with the transformational pressure theory and competitive strategic approaches in mind, along with having notions drawn from socio-technical transition theory whereas a Multi-Level Perspective approach is applied to discuss the transition the hotel industry is undergoing. This thesis contributes analytically to the research area of the current transformation in the hotel industry, with implications on how traditional hotel actors can adapt to the emergence of the sharing economy. The case study shows how hotel actors in Sweden, being in a currently prosperous state, are alarmingly positive towards the growing phenomenon of accommodation sharing hence they perceive it as an opportunity and a complement to the industry as minor negative financial effects are evident. However, we argue that traditional hotel actors will, after a coming period of recession, truly realize the effects of the accommodation sharing phenomenon. This since the adoption of sharing services is accelerated in a weaker financial landscape. We are of the perception that the phenomenon has resulted in the emergence of a new customer segment, “Mid Stay“ customers. In the study, we conclude that the hotel actors, no matter size or category, risk losing current customers, as well as the opportunity to attract new ones, if they do not transform and adapt to the ongoing change. Accommodation sharing should be perceived as nothing less than a threat that needs to be acted upon soon to remain sustainable in the now thriving hotel industry. However, the sharing economy is not necessarily a threat that needs to, or can, be eliminated, but rather one from which new profitable opportunities are made available for hotel actors to exploit in order to operate in symbiosis with the phenomenon.

Abstract:
This product development project has been carried out in cooperation with the company, Pegil Innovations AB. The purpose of the project was to develop a management solution for processed sewage sludge (dust) on accommodation vessels in the offshore industry. The process of the project combined the Front-End process with details from Set-Based Concurrent Engineering. The project started with a preliminary study and user studies to obtain deeper understanding regarding the relevant knowledge area. Details that were of importance to the project was gathered in a specification that was used through the entire process as a support. Then an idea generation was preformed, to discover and explore different solutions. From the idea generation five different idea solutions were created. These five solutions were explored deeper and then compared to a new specification. The specification was an updated version from the first one to better reflect what conditions the idea solutions should meet. When the idea solutions were explored, a new idea generation was performed, resulting in two concepts. These concepts were explored deeper and then compared to a new specification. Then followed another idea generation to explore how the concepts could be improved. In conclusion to the project a concept was chosen. The result was a plastic bag which was fastened around a spigot, that was filled with the dust and then the air was withdrawn (to create a vacuum). Then the opening of the plastic bag was heat sealed. The personal could then easily carry the bag to discard this together with the dust.

Zhang, Jin. "An investigation into guests' perceived service quality of the bed-and-breakfast and guest house market industry in the Nelson Mandela Bay area." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1087.

Full text
Abstract:
The tourism and hospitality industry has made a meaningful contribution to the development of the South African economy. Not only the hotels, but also the demand for self-catering holiday properties such as guest houses and bed-and-breakfast (B&B) establishments is increasing which could boost the tourist industry. Moreover, the prospect of the self-catering holiday properties in South Africa is extremely positive, particularly when the country is given the opportunity to hold the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Thus, expectations and perceptions are significantly shaped and transformed by the prosperous environment. The self-catering holiday properties should provide the best possible service to international and domestic tourists and ensure that their needs are fully met. The general purpose of this study was to evaluate the service quality of guest houses and B&Bs in the Nelson Mandela Bay by comparing guests’ expectations and perceptions. The results of this study could assist the managers of guest house and B&B in improving its service performance to more effectively fulfil the needs of dynamic tourist market. The literature study provided an overview of tourism industry from the management and marketing perspectives, services marketing and a detailed discussion of service quality focusing on the nature of services, determinants of service quality and techniques for measuring service quality. The SERVQUAL model and its derivative, Lodging Quality Index (LQI), were adapted for measuring the guests’ perceived service quality in this research. ii The empirical data was collected by means of a survey, using a self-administered questionnaire distributed to guests who were staying at guest houses or B&Bs in the Nelson Mandela Bay identified in terms of convenience sampling. One hundred and five useable questionnaires were received. The empirical findings based on the perception-minus-expectation (P-E) gap analysis showed that the perception mean scores were consistently lower than the expectation mean scores. This implies that guests perceived service quality of guest house and B&B to be relatively low. It is recommended that the managers of guest houses and B&Bs should: {u10007A} uniform the employees; {u10007A} use every tool to figure out what the guest wants; {u10007A} establish specific working procedures and help employees to understand their job responsibilities and mangers’ expectations; {u10007A} invite suggestions of existing located facilities from guests, and move the inconvenient facilities if possible; {u10007A} employ a communication audit to evaluate the overall quality of the communication system by comparing communication objectives to actual performance; {u10007A} combine useful destination information from different sources and update them on the website frequently; and {u10007A} apply an attracting layout to build positive image.

Abstract:
The current investigation aims to show the changes caused by Airbnb's incursion into the services of the hospitality industry. The methodology used was the bibliographic review of books, theses, scientific articles and publications from academic sources. Regarding the investigated topic, the found information shows that hotels have reacted by segmentation and specialization in a specific type of tourist and have added value in services through experiences that seek to be recorded in the memories of tourists. Regarding Airbnb, the investigations found show that it is currently growing at an accelerated rate due to the use of the collaborative economy, which is based on sharing the creation, production, distribution and consumption of goods and services between different people and companies making use of the technological advances as a means to carry out transactions. Also, to the growing trend of millennials who are the population that makes the most use of Airbnb and this is related to the fact of accessible price valuation, knowing the local culture and obtaining more information about the place that is visited. In conclusion, hotels have currently implemented strategies that seek to reduce the changes generated by new business models such as Airbnb, using segmentation and specialization in a type of tourist, making investments in hybrid economy models, packages and promotions of services that include lodging, renting rooms by the hour, investing in more technology and opening cheap hotels.

Graci, Sonya. "Environmental Commitment in the Tourism Accommodation Industry In Sanya, China." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/3536.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on environmental commitment in the tourist accommodation industry, with particular emphasis on a case study of Sanya, Hainan, China. Both the beneficial and detrimental attributes of tourism accommodations are discussed in this thesis. On a worldwide basis, negative environmental and social impacts associated with the accommodation industry have spurred the formation of many non-regulatory initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability of accommodations and their related activities. Furthermore, as China is a country that is relatively new to tourism and is affected by burgeoning growth, it is imperative to determine the level of environmental commitment in the industry. Through this analysis, potential methods can be assessed that can be imperative in moving the tourism accommodation industry in Sanya, and subsequently worldwide, towards sustainable action. In order for the latter to occur, a study was conducted in 2004-05 to identify the motivating, organizational and impeding factors that affect the level of environmental commitment in the Sanya accommodation industry. These factors were assessed using qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis in an attempt to provide insight into the gap between attitude and action in relation to sustainability in the tourist accommodation industry. This thesis discusses the major conclusions derived from this study and provides insight as well as recommendations as to what affects the level of environmental commitment in an accommodation facility and how this information can be utilized to motivate sustainability.

There are very rich tourism resources in Taiwan, as a basis, it also led the development of the tourism industry. But it was lack of study about the relationship between tourism resources and tourism industry in the past year. Therefore, this study attempts to find the structural correlation between each other. Information and data were collected which included bed and breakfast (B&;Bs), hotel, and tourism resources of natural resources and human resources. So that, it were investigated the association between the two groups with each other, through structural equation modeling (SEM). The results were showed that: (1) It was obtained the highest goodness of fit, including, the SEM of “humanistic resources and B&;Bs,” “natural resources and humanistic resources” and “humanistic resources and hotels”. And thus, it could be known that humanistic resources had quite large influence on B&;Bs and hotels. (2) Regression analysis was adopted, and it also selected its excellent correlation to discuss between B&;Bs, hotels and tourism resources. But it was discovered that no higher structural correlation could be obtained. From the analysis results of the study, it was discovered that there was no correlation between the structural modeling of lodging industry and that of tourism resources, and that the former had a comparatively structural correlation with humanistic resources when B&;Bs and hotels were calculated separately. The results could serve as references for recreational development to the authorities concerned.

According to the analysis report issued by WTO (World Tourism Organization) in 2000, tourism has become a primary source of foreign exchange of many countries. Under the worldwide trend of strong demand for tourism development, the ecotourism industry in Taiwan is now on the turning point of history. From Tourism Policy White Paper issued by Tourism Bureau in 2001 to the “Time for Taiwan” now, Taiwan tourism industry develops continuously, so it is quite important to integrate and analyze the tourism and recreational resources and lodging industry. Based on the tourism and recreational resources and lodging industry in Taiwan, this paper conducts the correlation analysis on spatial distribution of Taiwan lodging industries and various resources of tourism and recreations via Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (MDS), Cluster Analysis, GIS Kriging Method of Spatial Statistical Analysis and Overlay Analysis. This paper focuses on pensions and hotels in cities and counties of Taiwan as well as both natural and cultural resources to investigate and collect data, so as to explore the correlations between the so-said resources and lodging industries. The results reveal that: (1) pensions are highly related to tourism resources while hotels are lowly related to it. It can be speculated the quantity of pensions in future based on the number of ancient roads and festival activities. (2) Three clusters can be determined in line with the distributions of lodging resources in cities and counties of Taiwan, i.e., hotel oriented (district of hotels), neutral type (district of hotels and pensions) and pensions oriented (district of pensions). Besides, based on the distribution of tourism resources, it can also be divided into three clusters, i.e. human resource oriented, neutral type and natural resources oriented. (3) To learn the spatial correlation, MDS is used to draw out the multidimensional perceptual map for lodging industries and tourism resources in each city and county of Taiwan, so that the resources features can be concluded based on different quadrants. (4) Through the Kriging Spatial Statistic Analysis with geographic information system, it can estimate the spatial contour map for lodging industries and tourism resources to conduct overlay analysis, finding that Hualien County and Yilan County are higher in spatial distribution. (5) In cities and counties of Taiwan, the pensions are highly correlated with the special landscape in natural resources and sightseeing gardens and museums in cultural resources, while the hotels have a higher correlation with all fields of cultural resources. (6) According to the spatial contour map for pensions based on tourism resources of cities and counties in Taiwan, it is deduced from ancient roads in natural resources that the pensions spatial distribution contour map is highly fit for the current distribution of pensions in the specific areas. (7) In terms of the diversity analysis on lodging industries and tourism resources in all cities and counties in Taiwan, Nantou County, Hualien County and Yilan County has a higher diversity in resources. Based on the analysis results, the paper provides a timely planning opportunity for introducing multivariate information of tourism and recreational resources, to be served as a reasonable reference for the development of tourism in all cities and counties in Taiwan.

Morais, Flávio Daniel Correia. "Determinants of cash holdings in the accommodation industry: evidence from Southerm European Countries." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.6/3053.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyzes the determinants of cash holdings for the accommodation industry in Southern European countries (Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal) using a sample of 5964 firms during the period 2003-2011. A fixed-effects panel data model revealed that larger companies, higher leveraged, where most debt is short-term and that maintain better relationships with financial institutions exhibit lower cash to assets ratios. Liquid assets substitutes, capital expenditures and asset tangibility also have a negative effect on cash levels. As expected, cash holdings are positively influenced by cash-flow and cash-flow volatility. The results reveal the negative and significant impact of the 2008 financial crisis on cash holdings in the sector, which at the end of 2011 had not yet returned to pre-crisis levels. Empirical results reject the generalized argument put forward, over more than a decade, to explain high cash holdings and its trend to rise until the crisis, emphasizing the little importance of the precautionary motive as an incentive to accumulate cash.

Unlike other countries, service apartment in Taiwan is a relatively new type of real estate. The public and even those who are in real-estate-related business are not familiar with service apartments, and only a very few pieces of research have been done in this field. Via literature review, questionnaire survey and interview with suppliers and demanders, this paper aims to define what service apartment is, to introduce the status quo inside and outside Taiwan, to point out the current obstacles in this island, and to probe whether or not service apartment in Taiwan may extend the reach and find its place in tourism accommodation market. Since it originated in Europe, service apartment has become a place with professional management and domestic facilities, featuring a space larger than a hotel room along with amenities tailored to accommodator’s needs. Service apartments in foreign countries are greatly diversified based on different target customers. The apartments can either be budget or pricey hotels that provide short-term or long-term stay for leisure and business travelers; while in Taiwan, service apartments are often luxury condos with hotel amenities and only attract to long-stay businessmen. In this respect, there shall be room for further expansion for service apartments in Taiwan. As observed from Taiwan’s tourism accommodation market, international and domestic tourists mainly go for hotels, guesthouses or daily rental suites. Hotels in this country have differentiated pricing for target customers like individuals or families. There are numerous hotels covering the entire island. As for the guesthouse, Most of them offer affordable accommodations near tourist attractions and are usually operated in a smaller scale – usually no more than fifteen rooms in each guesthouse. Daily rental suites are often budget accommodation in civilian’s houses in downtown area, and their biggest problem is that they are still illegal in Taiwan. The research indicates that operators in Taiwan do face difficulties under current circumstances – service apartments have low market recognition, and demanders and suppliers have a different understanding on service apartments. Operators in Taiwan indeed face struggles since shrinking demand emerges as the toughest obstacle. Based on the analysis of demanders and suppliers’ survey, this paper finds entering tourism market a feasible solution for service apartments in Taiwan. However, the current operators of service apartments may not be the only answer to this situation. As demanders focus on the lower room price, while the current well-known operators might maintain the same high/moderate price, we would look to other smaller and less famous operators to expand their business scope or other kinds of operators to join in the budget service apartment market. Now the problem pops up as most of the small service apartments or daily rentals are run illegally, so the premise of entrance of service apartments is to amend certain law regulations in Taiwan. For operators who attempt to enter tourism accommodation market in the future, the following advice may be helpful: first, apply for a hotel license; second, urge the legislatures to amend relevant regulations; third, expand supply to the service apartment market; fourth, build your service apartment at location that is easy access to transportation; fifth, reduce expenses at certain facilities or service to lower room price. Meanwhile, in light of the lack of research in this field, researchers may consider the advice below for future studies: first, collect full first-hand data so as to refine the analyses; second, interview operators of other kinds of accommodation to see if it is probable for service apartments to enter the tourism market.

The development of accommodation industry is often related to the location of the tourism resource. The purpose of this study is to discuss the spatial distributional between the tourism resources and the accommodation. The data was collected from the information announced by New Taipei City Tourism Bureau and the Bureau of Tourism. The information covers B&B lodging industry, hotel industry, and tourism resources, natural resources, human cultural resources. The following methods were applied for the analysis: Cluster Analysis, Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (n-MDS), Kriging Method of Spatial Statistics, and Overlay Analysis. The results show: (1) The correlation between B&B and tourism resources is higher than which between the hotel and tourism resources. From the regression model, trails and cultural festivals are highly correlated with B&B. So, the future estiamtion of B&B development can be forecasted by the regression model; (2) The spatial pattern of accommodation industry by using cluster analysis can be categorized into three orientation groups: hotels, intermediate (a mix of hotels and B&Bs), and B&Bs in New Taipei City. About tourism resources are also divided into three types: cultural resources, intermediate type, and natural resources; (3) Using MDS to create spatial perceptual maps of accommodation industry and tourism resources, the results are consistent with the cluster analysis; (4) Through the overlay analysis of the contour maps of different resource spaces using the Kriging function, the Rueifang area, the Wulai area, and the Shek Mun area have higher Spatial density among tourism resources; (5) Through the corresponding relationship analysis shows the B&B with special landscape, tourist orchard, and museum have higher result. The other relationship between hotels and cultural resources show the highest; (6) According to the results of Goodness of fit between the estimation of B & B by the trail of natural resources and the B & B show a higher goodness of fit; (7) Accommodation industry and tourism resources were combined by the diversity analysis, it show a high diversity area included the Pinghsi area, the Sanshia area and the Wulai area. In summary, the study result can be used in multiple tourism information planning purposes and support for future development considerations.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Tourism is one of the most important businesses in many countries. It has often led to environmental problems, particularly in developing countries (Alexander, 2002; Kasim, 2007). Environmental impacts from the tourism industry have become a serious issue in developing countries such as Thailand. This is particularly evident in the Thai hotel industry, which consumes a huge amount of natural resources and is a major contributor to such environmental impacts. Over the past two decades, the Thai hotel industry has begun to implement environmental management practices (EMP) in the form of ‘Green Leaf Certification’ (GLC) - an industry and government driven environmental certification program - as a way to address their environmental impacts. Despite the potential benefits from adopting environmental certification, environmental management practices and the GLC, they are still not popular in the Thai hotel industry, with only 203 out of 5,420 accommodation establishments (National Statistical Office, 2010) which are Green Leaf certified (Green Leaf Foundation, 2013b). This study recognises that hotel managers in Thailand may play a central role in increasing the uptake of GLC. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the behavioural intentions of the hotel managers in Thailand to adopt the GLC. Specifically, this study considers how the perceived benefits of adopting the GLC, in conjunction with social pressures, the barriers to adoption and general environmental attitudes influence the managers’ behavioural intentions. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The data for this study was collected from a sample of hotels registered with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) through an online survey distributed to 359 hotel managers. The survey investigated hotel managers’ knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions (over one or five years) towards the GLC and their general environmental attitudes. The findings of this thesis can be divided into two categories that relate to the periods of time in which the behavioural intentions were framed. Firstly, the factors that predict an increase in the hotel managers’ behavioural intention to adopt the GLC in the next year were their general environmental attitudes, selected subjective norms and economic barriers. Secondly, the predictors of intention to adopt the GLC in the next five years were external support barriers, knowledge of EMP barriers and the education level of the managers. The findings of this thesis sheds some light onto strategies for increasing the number of certified hotels in developing countries. For example, most of the hotels in Thailand are small and medium sized, and the culture tends to be collectivistic. In the short term, the Thai government and associated organisations should pay attention to lowering the cost required to become certified, increasing the knowledge of the general environmental attitudes and of the people influencing them. While in the long term, the government and associated organisations should support hotels by creating seminars on knowledge about GLC and environmental problems into the formal education level such as diploma and Bachelor’s degree. Moreover, this thesis focuses on the differences in the general environmental attitudes of hotel managers who knew about the GLC and those who did not. While both groups were more likely to be more eco-centric than anthropocentric, those who knew of the GLC tended to be less anthropocentric than those who did not know about it. These findings are discussed in the light of previous studies and the findings of the thesis. The implications for the environmental policies and practices of the hotel industry in Thailand are considered, and the thesis concludes by presenting recommendations for future research.

Since as long ago as Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, laborers have been paid wages, defined roughly as a monetary measure of work completed over a given standard time, usually an hour or a day. However, since employees have always depended on their employers for their wages, and employers have always had greater bargaining power when wages are agreed upon, the constant drive by employers to minimize labor costs has resulted in a distinct class difference between the two parties, with the labor class being particularly vulnerable to exploitation. However, the idea of a minimum wage aims to regulate the minimum payment an employer may offer for a standard period of work, be it hourly, daily or monthly, through State control. Recent statistics show that in recent years, the number of catering and accommodation enterprises, their units of industry, turnover and number of employees in Taiwan have experienced year on year growth. The primary causes of this growth is the growing trend for people to eat out, along with an increasing demand for catering and accommodation from a rapidly growing single population. This growth of Taiwan's catering and accommodation industry means that the minimum wage will come to have a direct effect on an ever larger portion of the population as more and more people find employment in this industry. In order to examine the impact of a minimum wage increase on both workers and employers, this study conducted a survey using two questionnaires which were completed separately by workers and employers. The worker questionnaire consisted of questions related to participants’ basic information, and their views on the economic effects of minimum wage increases. Both labor and employer participants agreed that minimum wage increases would increase the general wage, and would thus increase the commodity price level. On the other hand, both parties agreed that the minimum wage has a negative effect on domestic workers with lower levels of education and skills, teenagers and those with disabilities, making it more difficult for them to find work. Overall, though, both parties agreed that minimum wage would help to shorten the wage gap, help increase workers’ enthusiasm, and generally improve the relationship between workers and employers. In addition, while both parties agreed that a minimum wage would affect the hiring of foreign workers, particularly considering the benefits foreign labor offers developing domestic industries, participants from the worker sample felt that minimum wage should be applicable to foreign workers, whereas participants in the employer sample felt it should not. Again, both groups agreed that minimum wage adjustments should be decided by negotiation between workers and employers, and should take place annually. Both groups also agreed that the minimum wage should be sufficient to support the basic living requirements for three persons. The worker participants felt that the most important factor to be considered when setting or adjusting the minimum wage should be the commodity price level, followed by the national economic growth rate. The minimum cost of living was ranked as the third most important factor. Employers, too, felt that the most important factor to be considered when setting or adjusting the minimum wage should be the cost of commodities, followed by national economic growth rate. However, they felt that the third most important factor should be the general workers’ wages.

The number of B&B is burgeoning in Taiwan, but lots of them remain illegal. Many reasons make it happened. However, this study particularly aims at surveying B&B owners’ cognition to regulations for rural accommodation industry and micro-accommodation industry regulations. In the mean time, this study also consults the regulations and condition of accommodation industry in foreign countries to try to provide recommendation for the direction and applicability of regulations for Taiwan’s accommodation industry. By collecting information about the development condition and regulations for accommodation industry of advanced overseas countries, this study finds out the accommodation industry in those overseas countries always contain micro accommodation industry which is set between B&B and hotel industry. This study claims that micro accommodation industry is what Taiwan demand. This study sent 500 questionaries and received 219 valid responses. The statistics shows that B&B owners with different B&B operation condition have different cognition to present B&B regulations and micro accommodation industry regulations. Overall, the important factors which affect B&B owners’ cognition to present B&B regulations include those have positive influences:「the number of long-term staff」and the operation period「upon eight years」and those have negative influence:「the number of family members as staff」 and the investment「more than 13million」. Moreover, the important factors which affect B&B owners’ cognition to micro accommodation regulations include those have positive influences:「the number of long-term staff」and monthly cost「more than 80 thousand dollars」and those have negative influence:「the number of family members as staff」 and 「the percentage of B&B income is between 21~50% of owner’s total income」。 48.9% of B&B owners, 107 people, invested more than 8 million dollars. 47.9% of B&B owners, 105 people, whose B&B income is between 21~50% of total income. 57.6% of B&B owners, 126 people, whose B&B monthly cost is more 30 thousand. The statistics above shows that near half B&B in Taiwan has turned into specialized and full-time operation. According to the result, this study gets a conclusion that most B&B owners think the existing regulations for B&B is not suitable for use and they are looking forward to the establishment of regulations for minor-accommodation industry.

Abstract:
Master of science in building by advanced coursework and research : A research report submitted to the faculty of engineering and built environment, university of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the master degree od science in building.
In 1997, the South African government introduced Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) as an innovative procurement mechanism, in the form of a policy to regulate the delivery of public assets and services over a protracted period or concession. PPPs involve private sector entities in the form of a consortium or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which signs a Project Agreement with Government and takes responsibility for delivering the infrastructure and long-term service though funding, designing, building, operating and maintaining the asset or service for the duration of the concession period. The benefits of this type of procurement arise from the transfer of risk to the private entity, incentivising the entity to deliver value for money (VFM) and creating value by delivering innovative and integrated project solutions, which aim to reduce the whole life cost and maximise functionality of an asset. The aim of this research is to examine the role of facilities management at the design stage in the delivery of office accommodation through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and how this could reduce maintenance costs throughout the whole life of the asset. The research consists of one case study on a large and complex office accommodation-type service PPP project. It focuses on the three design defects identified, namely, the reinforced concrete floors, roof skylights and grey water tanks, and how these led to further maintenance costs that could have been avoided if proper facilities management was implemented in the design phase of the PPP. The data obtained is self-report interviews, peer review journals, public and private sector issues project documentation and expert opinions. The findings of the research indicate that the early involvement of facilities in the design phase can potentially mitigate the risk of design defects, reduce the cost of maintenance during the operational phase, improve communication with the professional team and increase the level of accountability. On the other hand, if these conditions are not met the design process suffers, as in this specific case of the headquarters of the accommodation serviced PPP project. 3 The research proved that these is limited literature on the collaboration of facilities management and design in the South African economy, as it is an emerging market which is constantly facing new developments and changes. However, the research proves due to the governance structures of PPPs, the organisation of the different private sector parties in the project development shows limited interaction. This research yielded a number of recommendations for further study of assessing the viability and feasibility of a fully integrated design solution and due to the limited literature in office accommodation service-type PPP projects other case studies of a similar nature must be analysed, in conjunction with further quantitative and qualitative research to confirm the validity of the findings. .

While the amounts of internet users grow up, people around the world communicate the information with each other everywhere. The Internet gives consumers new communication platforms to share their messages、information and word-of-mouth. The research on electronic word-of-mouth, there has been relatively limited research published which examines the service products. Therefore, we focus on the service products-Bed and Breakfast Accommodation. Service products are intangible and cannot be easily described, before they experience the service, they can’t measure the value of service products. Thus, the experience of others is important. When consumers can’t experience the service of the bed and breakfasts, they tend to rely on word-of-mouth from an experienced source to lower perceived risk and uncertainty.(Bansal & Voyer, 2000; Murray, 1991; Olshavsky & Granbois, 1979)Therefore, consumers search the information and eWOM (electronic word- of-mouth) of products to make purchasing decision. In this study, we find someone who have found the eWOM of the bed and breakfasts to finish the surveys. We use the Internet and the paper form to deliver the surveys, and we got 344 surveys back. In this research, there are there findings: 1.eWOM has an effect on consumers’ perceived risk. 2.Perceived risk has an effect on consumers’ purchasing intention. 3.Perceived risk has a mediating partial effect among eWom and purchase intention.

Abstract:
This study utilizes the autoethnographic method of research to examine and reflect on the spoken language and labels associated with accommodated workers who have been disabled in workplace accidents in the Canadian mining and construction industry. Spotlighting the personal impact and the implications of the “light duty” and “modified duty” labels as well as the slang terminology used to describe and characterize accommodated workers is an important first step in helping decrease the stigmatization of accommodated workers who have been disabled on the job. As there is very little research in the field of the discourse rooted in workplace accommodation and disability management, it is my hope that this autoethnography will provide a voice that expresses the need to phase out prevailing negative attitudes and stereotypes surrounding accommodated workers, and amplify the call to tomorrow’s mining leaders to support and actualize existing respectful workplace policies and human rights legislation.

Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Technology: Hospitality and Tourism, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2017.
In South Africa, the tourism industry has been identified as one of the key drivers for economic development and transformation of the country. Although South Africa joined the world tourism stage since democracy, the country still contends with issues linked to apartheid, such as poverty, inequality and transformation. More specific and related to this study is the transformation of the tourism industry. In this regard, an overwhelming majority of tourism enterprises are still under the ownership of the White minority. With the post-apartheid transition, the national government recognized that the unequal ownership structure within the tourism sector (as with most of the other economic sectors) needed to be addressed through a programme of transformation. Hence, the transformation programme introduced to counter the current dominance of the economic sector was called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), followed by Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE); the programme aimed at redressing inequalities that were linked to the legacy of apartheid. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to gather in-depth information from respondents, based on their accommodation establishment. The data collected from the responses were analysed using Microsoft Excel. This study revealed that the accommodation sector is struggling to keep up with the 2014 transformation target of thirty percent. Incidentally, transformation as noted by the National Department of Tourism, within the industry currently stands at less than 3 percent and will struggle to meet the amended target of thirty percent in respect of the transformation targets set for 2017. Although the government has introduced many initiatives to promote Black participation within the accommodation sector, transformation has remained stagnant and Black ownership of accommodation establishments is almost non-existent. The study results have found that there are no Black business that operate within the CBD of Clarens and that businesses that operate in Clarens even though wholly White-owned, are indeed compliant with the Tourism BEE charter in spite of the results noting that no transformation has taken place. This is due to the issue of automatic compliance afforded to businesses based on their annual turnover.

Abstract:
Since the advent of the Internet, the number of individuals and organisations using tools such as the World Wide Web and cell phones has increased, and is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. Social media has provoked fundamentally different ways of doing business, and organisations rapidly had to get on this social media bandwagon to stay up to date with the latest market trends and ahead of the competition. Although social media is already broadly used among South African businesses, the perception regarding the use of social media as a promotional mix element has not been investigated sufficiently in South Africa. The primary purpose of this study was therefore to determine the perception of star-graded accommodation establishments, operating in the Western Cape province of South Africa, regarding the use of social media as a promotional mix element. A broad and in-depth literature review was conducted on the use of social media and social media as a probable promotional mix element. An empirical study was conducted, in which data was collected from star-graded accommodation establishments operating in the Western Cape by means of a web-based (computer-assisted) self-administered questionnaire. A quantitative approach was followed in order to satisfy the research objectives of this study. The results of this research study indicate that social media is perceived to be an instrumental marketing element in star-graded accommodation establishments and can indeed be considered an element of the promotional mix.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse how the traditional hotel industry perceives the growth of Airbnb in Porto, as well as the strategies adopted accordingly. This thesis aims to: understand if Airbnb’s growth has been taken into account by the different players in the traditional hotel industry; identify, for each segment, what measures have been developed by the companies to face the fierce entry of Airbnb; and understand whether there is a perception that Airbnb's growth added value to the industry. This dissertation begins with a brief description of the hotel industry in Portugal. This sector has grown in Portugal in terms of the occupancy rate, the number of registered accommodations, and the number of overnight stays. Thereupon, it is carried out a literature revision about the sharing economy, of which Airbnb emerges as an example, and the perspectives about the economic impacts of Airbnb. A qualitative analysis is carried out posteriorly, using interviews with hotel managers from different segments in Porto. Finally, the collected information is processed and analysed. The interviewees’ views on the effects of Airbnb’s entry and growth n in the hotel sector are not consensual. Most interviewees consider that Airbnb is not in an advantageous position, stating that there is enough space in the market for different accommodation segments in the sector. Concerning the social impact, the majority referred that Airbnb creates jobs and revenue for the market and brings notoriety to the city/country. Regarding the impact of Airbnb in Porto, all interviewees expressed that it has been positive. None of the subjects claimed to have adapted their strategy due to the growth of Airbnb.

The tourism industry is one of the biggest economic contributors in South Africa and it is predicted that the industry will grow significantly over the years to come. This growth pressures South Africa to stay competitive and adhere to the needs of the visitors. The latter being one of the core functions of any tourism establishment. Labour structures in the tourism industry are constantly changing and to deliver quality products, employees should be well skilled and prepared for the demands of the industry. The accommodation sector, one of the biggest sectors in the tourism industry, provides a variety of services to tourists when visiting this country. It was determined in the literature review that the skills needed by an accommodation manager, to provide the expected services include flexibility, people skills, the ability to train other employees and the ability to explore the ever changing needs of the tourist. Higher education organisations in South Africa educate potential tourism employees in a variety of skills and knowledge. However, some employees are still of the opinion that these students are not adequately prepared for the demands of the industry and therefore complain. Added to this, there is very little communication between the industry and higher education organisations. Therefore the tourism industry feels that students are not employable which creates challenges for students, higher education organisations and the tourism industry. Education and skills development should contribute directly to the economic growth of South Africa and the government, a very important role player in the tourism industry, encourages education opportunities in South Africa. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine, through industry participitation, what the management skills required within graded establishments in South Africa are. To achieve this aim, the following objectives were set: To analyse the literature available regarding the managerial theories, managerial levels, managerial processes and universal skills needed by managers, to analyse the tourism industry and hospitality sector, identify the important role played by managerial skills within this sector and to identify higher education programmes available in South Africa that focus specifically on managerial skills development for the accommodation sector. Thirdly, to collect and analyse the perceptions of accommodation owners and managers regarding the managerial skills and knowledge required by graduate managerial employees and then to draw conclusions and make recommendations to higher education organisations to adapt tourism management qualification programmes. This was achieved by making use of a quantitative research method by means of self-administered questionnaires, distributed to 254 Tourism Grading Counsil of South Africa’s (TGCSA) graded establishment managers in the nine (9) provinces of South Africa. The data, gathered from the questionnaire, was captured electronically by an online programme, SurveyMonkey. The data was then processed by means of SPSS and analysed. The descriptive results revealed that most of the responding accommodation establishments do employ graduates, but these graduates have to display certain characteristics. The top three characteristics for an accommodation manager included trustworthiness, responsibility and motivation in that order. Being ambitious, intelligent and sensitive rated the lowest. A factor analysis revealed that there are 10 important factors that contributes to being an effective accommodation manager. These skills included: 1) Personal characteristics, 2) Forecasting skills, 3) Strategic management skills, 4) Human resource skills, 5) Problem solving and crisis management skills, 6) Communication skills, 7) Information technology skills, 8) Customer service skills, 9) Financial skills and 10) Marketing skills. The comparisons (by means of ANOVA’s, t-tests and spearman rank order correlations) between skills needed by an accommodation manager and selected business characteristics (the province in which the accommodation establishment is located, the grading status, the size, the number of employees and the years that the accommodation establishment has been in operation) are unique to this study and various significant differences were identified. Comparisons have also been done between skills needed by an accommodation manager and selected personal characteristics (age, current position, duration of employment, level of higher education and the necessity of practical skills before employment of the respondent) which also revealed significant differences. The highest number of significant differences was identified for larger establishments, age, position of the respondents and the duration of employment. The results of this study can be used by higher education organisations to adapt their current tourism management qualifications, and by accommodation establishments to understand the training needs of employees. It did however voice the concerns of industry role players when it comes to new graduates and their employability.
