Abstract:
This paper reports on the pilot results of the first independent evaluation of Accelerated Reader (AR), an online reading programme, in China. Despite its adoption in over 800 Chinese schools and robust evaluation elsewhere, AR has not been independently assessed in China. The sample included 528 Year 5 and 6 pupils from two public schools in China. The pilot was a cluster randomised control trial, where four classes (195 pupils) were randomised to receive the AR intervention, while seven (333 pupils) followed business-as-usual instruction. The intervention lasted 12-13 weeks, with one session

AbstractSignalling through TNFR1 modulates proinflammatory gene transcription and programmed cell death, and its impairment causes autoimmune diseases and cancer. NEDD4-binding protein 1 (N4BP1) is a critical suppressor of proinflammatory cytokine production that acts as a regulator of innate immune signalling and inflammation. However, our current understanding about the molecular properties that enable N4BP1 to exert its suppressive potential remain limited. Here, we show that N4BP1 is a novel linear ubiquitin reader that negatively regulates NFκB signalling by its unique dimerization-depend

IntroductionEnergy metabolism abnormity emerges as a crucial factor that facilitates tumorigenesis by accelerating aerobic glycolysis. However, the function of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) aerobic glycolysis and immune escape is still unclear. Here, this investigation was intended to elucidate the regulation of m6A ‘reader’ IGF2BP1 involved in HCC aerobic glycolysis and immune escape.MethodsThe aerobic glycolysis was tested by glucose uptake, lactate, ATP generation and ECAR. The CD8+ T cell-mediated killing effect was tested by cytotoxicity, IFN-γ and granzyme B.

The fastest supercomputer in 2016 consumed over 17MW for a mere 33 Petaflops of performance. This makes energy efficiency a crucial obstacle to overcome in order to make Exascale computing a reality. Over 50% of the performance of this supercomputer is due to the presence of accelerators or coprocessors that are designed to do certain kind of mathematical operations in an energy efficient manner. Currently, accelerators such as NVIDIA GPGPUs and Intel Xeon Phi dominate this market. However, with the addition of FPGAs from Altera and Xilinx in HPC clusters, more options for accelerators are bec

There are spells in the world: incantations that can transform reality through the power of procedural utterances. The marriage vow, the courtroom sentence, the shaman’s curse: these words are codes that change reality. As an adult, magic is typically seen as being “pure fantasy” (Rosengren and Hickling 75), while Bever argues that magic is something lost to time and materialism,

Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs), like the trucks that move containers and the vans and box trucks that deliver packages, are an essential part of our economy but are responsible for a disproportionate amount of pollution emitted from on-road vehicles. Despite comprising just over 10 percent of the vehicles on our roads, MHDVs emit over half of lung-damaging and ozone-forming pollutants and nearly a third of greenhouse gases from on-road vehicles. Communities near freight corridors, ports, and warehouses face heightened health risks from truck pollution. Zero-emission MHDV adoption has
