Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explored the views of thirteen youth at Victoria High School about what they regarded as achievement and how this influenced their lives and what they thought about their futures. The starting premise of the study was that all learners think about achievement. The goal of the study was thus to show how different learners connect this understanding of achievement with their respective aspirations and the kinds of social and schooling worlds they inhabit. The key contribution of the study is the ways it links the social, cultural, and economic worlds of each of the thirteen learners to what they say about what they do and what they want to do, who they are and who they want to be, and what they think they do and what they think they want to do. The study shows that the life-worlds of each of the learners are significantly different yet the ways they go about making sense of that world are fairly similar. In that regard it is shown that the school, and what learners, parents and educators think it is and does, plays a crucial role in the sense-making process. As Berkhout (2008) notes, the different contexts that shape the lives of individuals are not simply external forces but rather are integral parts of their identity-making process. The study used the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Arjun Appadurai to bring together a framework by which to understand what learners said about their worlds and their aspirations, as well to develop a narrative that showed the rich and complex ways in which learners engaged with their realities. The study followed an interpretive qualitative approach to explore the issue of achievement and based its arguments on interviews conducted with thirteen youth between the ages of fifteen and seventeen years old. In this regard, a key finding was that learners approached the notion of achievement in developmental, cumulative, and progressive ways. These views included wanting to be popular, gaining new knowledge, preparing for future material acquisition, developing skills to lead decent lives, acquiring happiness, developing the ability to overcome their challenges and circumstances, and gaining skills and recognition that set up their futures. Five staff members at Victoria High school were also interviewed for their views of the schooling context and the kinds of cultures and legacies that framed their practice.

Full textSouth Africa has a long and troubled educational history, from pre-colonial education to the fall of apartheid, and eventually the acquisition of equal education for all (Christie, 2006). Many changes took place during this transitional period in the democracy and liberation of the New South Africa by means of pupil-centred classrooms, Curriculum 2005 (Taylor, 1995) and Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). Although numerous studies have been conducted internationally and in South Africa on underperforming in schools, the focus of this study is to ascertain the key elements of why learners underperform. The study’s aim is to determine the influence of a learner’s socio-economic situation on scholastic performance with references to nutrition, family structure, and parental support of learners in primary schools in Tshwane. In this full dissertation, the researcher found that most of the selected home environmental factors had no significant impact on the selected learners. It was, however, found (as many research already proved) that diet and sleep did have an influence on primary school learner academic performance. In presenting this argument, the theoretical framework, socio-constructivism learning theory, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, were used, as socio-constructivism states that although biological factors are a requirement for basic development to emerge, socio-cultural factors are crucial for basic natural processes to develop. Vygotsky’s socio constructivism theory indicates the uniqueness of the social environment and regards socio-cultural background as the primary and determining factor in the development of higher forms of human mental activity such as voluntary attention, intentional memory, logical thought, planning, and problem solving. In conjunction with Vygotsky, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs sets the foundation for this study as it states that in order for a being to move to the next level, the lower level of needs, need to be satisfied first. The objectives of the study were: - to determine what the impact of selected home environment factors on primary school learners’ academic performance is. To determine the relationship between poverty, family structure, and scholastic performance; to determine the influence of the type of dwelling on scholastic performance; to determine the influence nutrition have on a learners’ scholastic performance; and to determine the influence sleep deprivation has on learners’ academic performance. The study used a quantitative approach, and the method included questionnaires that learners in Grade 5, Grade 6, and Grade 7 of the selected school completed anonymously. The study revealed that poverty, family structure, and dwelling type did not have a significant impact on the learners of the selected school. The study did however reveal and confirmed what various other researchers have already found that sleep and nutrition did have an influence on academic performance. It is recommended that specific guidelines should be provided to parents about economical lunchbox ideas. Parents should be supplied with lists of foods best to pack in lunchboxes and food that is not allowed. Schools should further monitor the food provided at tuck shops, as the food provided should be nutritious as well as sustain learners’ energy. Food high in saturated fats and sugar should not be allowed at school tuck shops. Children should also be educated about nutrition and better or alternative choices they can make. Lunches that are supplied as part of the school nutrition program should be monitored to ensure that it is nutritious, low in sodium, and that a variety of fruit and vegetables are included in the meal. Studies have concluded that children should sleep on average nine hours per night. Unfortunately, due to increase in academic pressure and work load, more learners go to bed later. It is therefore recommended that schools adhere to guidelines on the amount of homework given to learners daily. It is further recommended that parents should ensure that their children have a set routine regarding sleep patterns. The use of electronic equipment, such as television, computers, and cellular phones prior to sleeping time should be limited as it affects sleep. Surprisingly, this study has also revealed that some of the data supplied to the school by the parents or guardians and the data that was obtained from the learners did not correlate. It is therefore recommended that schools should be more scrupulous with learner performance data as it could be a possible indicator of household problems or the quality of education. If it is found that the decline is due to quality of education, the school management team should act immediately to assist the necessary educators with the necessary skills to enable better quality of education. A pro-active plan of action should be put in place by the school for those learners whose marks decreased. An educator could talk to the learner and the parents to try and determine the possible causes for the decrease in marks. Remedial classes or remedial exercises should be given to the learners to assist in the areas of need. In addition, if it is determined that the cause is due to home environment factors then necessary assistance should be provided either by the school or other entities.

Makibinyane, Julius Motala. "Influence of national certificate vocational students’ academic support on the throughput rate at a TVET college in the Free State Province." Diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/27246.
Full textTechnical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa face several challenges including low throughput rate. Low throughput rates have a strong bearing on the success of the TVET sector and its ability to respond to the needs of the country, such as skills shortages. The aim of the study was to investigate the implications of the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) students’ academic support on the throughput rate at the selected TVET college. Qualitative research methodology has been used to help the researcher to explore and gather rich information on the college throughput rate and provision of academic support. The study utilised a case study design. Participants were student support services and academic staff at the selected TVET college. The collection of participants in this research was using a purposive sampling technique. The researcher recorded and transcribed semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data is based on thematic data. The themes used were derived from the research objectives and further broken down into categories and sub-categories. The study found that there are various factors that influence the students’ academic performance and the throughput rate such as students’ family background, academic difficulties, poor class attendance, poor infrastructure, lack of professional development opportunities, lack of career guidance, lack of academic support and shortage of Student Support Services (SSS) staff. The study also found that students are not making use of the student support services because of lack of information about the SSS unit at the college. Without proper students’ academic support programmes, students are likely not to succeed academically. Various challenges that hinder the effective utilisation of the academic support services include lack of qualified personnel, being understaffed, low prioritisation of academic support programmes by college management and limited access time. The college needs to develop ties with key stakeholders such as other TVET colleges and the Department of Basic Education to provide a forum for sharing crucial academic support information. The researcher suggests that more trained and qualified personnel should be hired to support students’ academic support. Administration of admission tests for students should be enhanced, and the test results should be available round the clock. College management should demonstrate dedication to the well-being of students by prioritising and acknowledging academic support as vital to the academic performance of students.

Kutholakale ukuthi ukwamukelwa kwesu eliphambili nelinomdlandla lokulwa nenkohlakalo, yisixazululo/ikhambi lokuxazulula le nkinga yenkohlakalo kwezezimali kwizikhungo zemfundo. Ukusungulwa kwenqubo yokulwa nenkohlakalo kwizikole zesekondari zemfundo kahulumeni yisu eliphambili abenzi bomgomo okumele balemukele ukusabalalisa kubafundi ulwazi lokufundisa nokulwa nenkohlakalo. Kuphinde futhi kwatholakala nokuthi umgomo wokungabekezeli neze inkohlakalo ngesaga esithi 'Zero Tolerance to Corruption' nguHulumeni weZimbabwe kumele usekelwe zikhungo ezehlukene ukuze kube nempumelelo ekulweni nenkohlakalo kwinqubo yemfundo, ukuze abafundi bakwazi ukuphumelela ezifundweni zabo. Ucwaningo luveze nokuthi, izikole zesekondari azinayo ikharikhyulamu ehleliwe yokulwa nenkohlakalo kwimfundo. Ucwaningo luphetha ngokuthi imfundo yokulwa nenkohlakalo kanye nokwamukelwa kwamasu amaningana kudlala indima ebalulekile ekulweni nenkohlakalo. Ngakho-ke, kunesidingo sokuqinisa amasu okulwa nenkohlakalo kanye nezindlela zokusekela ezisetshenziswa okwamanje eZimbabwe ukusekela ukuthi kube nesimo esisekela impumelelo yabafundi kwezemfundo. Ngokuhambisana nokungenhla, ucwaningo luncoma ukuthi kusungulwe ikharikhyulamu ehleliwe yokulwa nenkohlakalo ezikoleni zamasekondari zikahulumeni eZimbabwe, ukulwa nenkohlakalo. Kanti futhi nangaphezu kwalokho, ucwaningo luncoma ukuthi kwenziwe olunye ucwaningo kulo mkhakha ongacacile kahle ukungezela ulwazi maqondana nenqubo yokuphatha kahle ezikoleni zikahulumeni zamasekondari eZimbabwe.

Full textAssessment is considered as integral to the teaching and learning process of Mathematics where various types of assessment are used to develop feedback for several purposes. Research has highlighted the challenge of the dominance of summative assessment in classroom assessment practices. In recent years, world countries have been acknowledging the use of assessment for learning (AfL) to enhance the learning process and thus improve learner performance. This research explored how Mathematics teachers applied AfL in their classrooms. A theoretical framework to support AfL was presented through an overview of constructivism theory, social justice theory, connectivism theory, TPACK theory and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. A qualitative approach and a case study design were applied involving nine Mathematics teachers from nine primary schools. Data, collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and document analysis, were thematically analysed. The findings show a positive understanding of what AfL is and its importance to the teaching and learning of Mathematics. However, the application of AfL was found to be inconsistent with its purpose of creating an environment conducive to develop feedback that supports the learning process. Challenges that inhibit its application were found to outweigh successes experienced by teachers. Lack of theoretical understanding of the use of AfL, overcrowding, the language of learning and teaching and lack of resources emerged as some of the major challenges. Teachers pleaded for more in-service training opportunities to assist them with managing assessment for learning practices in Mathematics.
Volgens navorsing oorheers summatiewe assessering in klaskamers.
