Abstract:
Abstract This study analyzes the construction of institutional cooperation between the Brazilian Ministry of Health and academic institutions to develop the National Program for Access and Quality Improvement in Primary Care in the Brazilian National Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS). This qualitative research is based on a case study on this kind of cooperation, which carried out documental analysis and interviews with key actors from the Ministry of Health and academia. The political-institutional context of the federal government and the Ministry of Health in 2011 favored a greater opening to the theme of primary care and health evaluation, and a closeness to academia. This institutional cooperation is the result of a historical process where previous initiatives in the field of public health have connected public and academic managers interested in the development of SUS. This study contributes to the debate about the cooperation between government agencies and academia in implementing public health policies in Brazil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Resilience is a requirement for a modern-day academic citizen. This essay discusses the sources of academic resilience and its costs through personal reflection. The text positions academic citizenship among intersecting lifeworlds and ends up with a recognition of posthumanist ethic as a source of resilience. The vision for the academic citizen is neither utopian nor dystopian but thrutopian. Academic resilience is persistence to muddle through hardships, drawing power from the anxiety of neoliberal academia in a multicrisis world. The keyboard is our tool for crafting better futures, and the love for writing must be salvaged repeatedly from the paralyzing anxiety that has little in common with academic procrastination memes.

Abstract:
Background: The current nursing faculty shortage rapidly has expanded the need to hire faculty. New faculty are clinical experts in their own practice; however, many lack formal knowledge about the academic setting, making the transition from practice to academia difficult. Method: A qualitative descriptive study was developed to identify how new faculty transition into their academic positions. The sample consisted of 12 clinical nursing faculty participants. Results: A total of 12 themes emerged: awful day as faculty, career plans, compensation, finding my place in academia, great day at clinical, “I wanted to be successful,” preparation for the faculty role, struggling, student experiences, support, lack of support, and surprise. Finding ways to recruit and retain qualified faculty is imperative. Conclusion: Inadequate support for transitioning to the faculty role may contribute to faculty turnover; developing a strong mentoring program may help retain qualified faculty. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
T5 DNA polymerase, a highly processive single polypeptide enzyme, and PRD1 DNA polymerase, a protein-primed DNA polymerase, have been analyzed for their primary structural features. The amino acid sequence of T5 DNA polymerase reveals a high degree of homology with DNA polymerase I (Pol I) of Escherichia coli and retains many of the amino acid residues which have been implicated in the 3'-5' exonuclease and DNA polymerase activities of that enzyme. Alignment with sequences of polymerase I and T7 DNA polymerase (family A polymerases) was used to identify regions possibly involved in the high processivity of this enzyme. Further amino acid sequence comparisons of T5 DNA polymerase with a large group of DNA polymerases (family B) previously shown to exhibit little similarity to Pol I, indicate certain sequence segments are shared among distantly related DNA polymerases. These shared regions have been implicated in the 3'-5' exonuclease function of Pol I which suggests that the proofreading domains of all these enzymes may be related. Mutations in these segments in T5 DNA polymerase (family A) and PRD1 DNA polymerase (family B) greatly decrease the exonuclease activity of these enzymes but leave the polymerase activities intact. Additionally, an exonuclease deficient T5 DNA polymerase is used in DNA sequencing reactions and yields consistent results with low background contamination on autoradiographs of polyacrylamide/urea gels. PRD1 mutants defective in 3 regions which are highly conserved among family B DNA polymerases, are deficient in DNA polymerase activity but retain exonuclease activity.

Abstract:
Education aims to impart knowledge and makes good citizens. Libraries are the repositories of knowledge and form an integral part of education. Libraries have a long history, starting with the chained and closed-access libraries of earlier times to the present-day hybrid, digital, and virtual libraries that use the latest technology for provision of information through various services. Accordingly, librarians have also changed from storekeepers who were concerned with protection of books against theft, mutilation, and pilferage, to that of information officers, navigators, and cybrarians who find themselves in the vast ocean of reading material and are busy in satisfying their clients who want anytime and anywhere information. With the advent of computers, the nature of libraries has changed dramatically. Computers are being used in libraries to process, store, retrieve and disseminate information. As a result, the traditional concept of library is being redefined from a place to access books to one which houses the most advanced media including CD-ROM, Internet, and remote access to a wide range of resources. Libraries have now metamorphosed into digital institutions. Gone are the days when a library was judged by its quantitative resources. Today, libraries are surrounded by networked data that is connected to a vast ocean of Internet-based services. Moreover, electronic resources relevant to the professions are developing at an unprecedented pace. Academic libraries are considered to be the nerve centres of academic institutions, and must support teaching, research, and other academic programmes. The situation in academic libraries of India is the same as that of academic libraries the world over; however, Indian libraries must provide maximum information with limited resources.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper focuses on Sino-Russian scientific cooperation in the Arctic over the time period from 2012 to the current day. Academic cooperation with China entails more than meets the eye, as Chinese counterparts see the interactions with their partners from the prism of people-to-people diplomacy designed to create positive sentiment towards Chinese interests via non-governmental exchanges. The first part of this paper focuses on this engagement and Chinese attempts to steer the discourse in support of its interests in the Arctic.Foreign academics and leaders at the local level, untrained in the Chinese language and political system and unfamiliar with the hidden meanings of academic exchanges, become vulnerable and valuable targets for Chinese influence activities due to their high standing and access to valuable knowledge. The second part of the paper investigates the Sino-Russian scientific cooperation and capacity building that enables China to become a great maritime power—not always for the benefit of Russia, and to the disadvantage of NATO.

Abstract:
Gender equality in academia is a challenge endured globally with the under-representation of females in leadership and decision-making positions. Despite the numerous and diverse efforts taken by the universities to encourage gender equality, women in academia struggle to overcome the challenge of inequality. Around the world, the gendered academic organizational climate as well as the day-to-day interactions cause a major impact not only on female participation within academia but also on how they perceive their future in academic institutions. This research presents the results of a survey conducted with 48 female academics in Sri Lanka attempting to study female academics’ experience with gendered challenges in academia. The research concluded that female academics are challenged in building networks and in reaching their desired career goals. It also revealed that there is a difference in the level of challenges faced by female academics in Sri Lanka depending on their marital status and childcare responsibilities. To prevent the withdrawal of female academics from the field and improve their satisfaction, it is crucial for academic institutions and the relevant authorities to understand the sources of these challenges in academia and implement effective solutions to create a better working environment for women academics in the country.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Demand Side Management (DSM) has been recognized for its potential to counteract the intermittent nature of renewable energy, increase system efficiency, and reduce system costs. While the popular approach among academia adopts a social welfare maximization formulation, the industrial practice in the United States electricity market compensates customers according to their load reduction from a predefined electricity consumption baseline that would have occurred without DSM. This paper is an extension of a previous paper studying the differences between the industrial & academic approach to dispatching demands. In the previous paper, the comparison of the two models showed that while the social welfare model uses a stochastic net load composed of two terms, the industrial DSM model uses a stochastic net load composed of three terms including the additional baseline term. That work showed that the academic and industrial optimization method have the same dispatch result in the absence of baseline errors given the proper reconciliation of their respective cost functions. DSM participants, however, and very much unfortunately, are likely to manipulate the baseline in order to receive greater financial compensation. This paper now seeks to study the impacts of erroneous industrial baselines in a day-ahead wholesale market context. Using the same system configuration and mathematical formalism, the industrial model is compared to the social welfare model. The erroneous baseline is shown to result in a different and more importantly costlier dispatch. It is also likely to require more control activity in subsequent layers of enterprise control. Thus an erroneous baseline is likely to increase system costs and overestimate the potential for social welfare improvements.
