Abstract:
Railway spine, nerve prostration, combat neurosis, post-traumatic stress disorder: throughout the twentieth century, a complex array of terms has been codified by cultural, national, and medical institutions to describe a body and mind made dysfunctional by the inability to process intensely disturbing memories. In the wake of World War I, trauma-induced mental illness—diagnosed and treated as “shell-shock” in countless veterans—became an imperative focal point for sociopolitical and medical reform throughout Europe. This essay explores the connections between this historically contextualized psychiatric disorder and the music of Ivor Gurney, a soldier in the British Army whose life and work was significantly affected by his diagnosis in 1918. Through particular disturbances of form, structure, and texture, Gurney’s musical landscapes reenact the conditions of psychic trauma by creating a world in which memories are disruptive, invasive, and ultimately disabling.

Abstract:
After John Cage’s 1958 Darmstadt lectures, many European composers developed an interest in absurdity and artistic provocation. Although Ligeti’s fascination with Cage and his association with the Fluxus group was brief, the impact it had on his composition was palpable and lasting. A set of conceptual works, The Future of Music, Trois Bagatelles, and Poème symphonique for one hundred metronomes, fall clearly into the Fluxus model, even as the last has taken on a second life as a serious work. This spirit, however, can also be seen in the self-satire of Fragment and the drama and irony of Volumina, Aventures, and Nouvelles Aventures. The sketches for Aventures not only show the composer channeling this humor into a major work but also prove to be a fascinating repository of ideas that Ligeti would reuse in the years to come.

Abstract:
This chapter relates the work of young Black spoken word poets with Black liberationist, humanist, and Womanist religious scholars. It is easier for many Black youth to have “no expectation” that God should work in their lives than to wrestle with theodicy. This disconnection is reflected in youth performances of spoken word poetry, which invites their interpretations of overwhelming and absurd experiences of evil and suffering. The voices of young people in the heart of urban communities (like, but also beyond Chicago) reflect a desire for change within their communities and a condemnation of the role of political or religious leaders—or even God—in bringing that change to fruition. The young poets advance fierce correctives to many African American religious and scholarly attempts at making sense of evil and suffering in the presence of God. Nonetheless, Christian communities have a role to play in helping youth counter fragmented spirituality.

Hunter, Kenny. A Place is a Space Remembered. University of Edinburgh, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.2218/ed.9781836450481.

Full text
Abstract:
A Place is a Space Remembered consists of four monumental patinated and painted bronze sculptures. This public artwork addresses the identity, history, geology and economy of the Deux-Caps region in France through the use of sculptural symbols that are both meaningful and absurd. It is permanently installed within the courtyard of the Maison du Site des Deux-Caps, a venue situated near the the village of Audinghen, France, a key site in World War II. The work was commissioned in 2015 through the ‘Nouveaux Commanditaires’ programme, a prestigious French organisation that has commissioned over 300 artworks across Europe, working with internationally recognised artists including Vito Acconci, Ugo Rondinone and Erwin Wurm. This output belongs to Hunter’s longstanding investigation into the contemporary practice of public sculpture, particularly in relation to collective remembrance and war memorials.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Adams’ thesis the probability of a conditional is the conditional probability of the consequent given the antecedent. According to Stalnaker semantics, a conditional is true at a world just in case its consequent is true at all closest antecedent worlds to the original world. The chapter argues that Adams’ thesis and Stalnaker semantics are ways of cashing out the same ‘Ramsey test’ idea. Unfortunately, a well-known class of triviality theorems shows that Adams’ thesis and Stalnaker semantics are incompatible. Stefan Kaufmann has proposed (for reasons largely independent of the triviality theorems) a revised version of Adams’ thesis, which the chapter calls Kaufmann’s thesis. The chapter proves that combining Kaufmann’s thesis with Stalnaker semantics leads to ‘local triviality’ results, which seem just as absurd as the original triviality results for Adams’ thesis.

Abstract:
Lek and Braphai Wiriyaphan were married Sino-Thai entrepreneurs that became some of the greatest builders of Buddhist theme parks and ecumenical memorials in Asia. They designed parks and museums including the largest wooden temple and the largest metal animal statue in the world. This chapter compares their sites to others the Haw Par Villa in Singapore, the Wat Muang “Hell Park” in Thailand, the Centro Ecuménico Khun Iam in Macau, Chan-soo Park’s Moga-A Sculpture Garden in South Korea, the Sala Keaoku sculpture garden in Laos, as well as modern Buddhist temples and art galleries designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, Thawan Duchanee, Tadao Ando, Takashi Yamaguchi, Shin Takamatsu, among others. These sites are a mixture of religious buildings, leisure and tourist sites, and spectacle sites (J. misemono). They overwhelm instead of instruct. They encourage distraction, not focus. They are an important part of carnival culture that link the spectacular, grotesque, the absurd, and the comedic.

Nemmers, Adam. American Modern(ist) Epic. Liverpool University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781949979664.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
American Modern(ist) Epic argues that during the 1920s and ‘30s a cadre of minority novelists revitalized the classic epic form in an effort to recast the United States according to modern, diverse, and pluralistic grounds. Rather than adhere to the reification of static culture (as did ancient verse epic), in their prose epics Gertrude Stein and John Dos Passos utilized recursion, bricolage, and polyphony to represent the multifarious immediacy and movement of the modern world. Meanwhile, H. T. Tsiang and Richard Wright created absurd and insipid anti-heroes for their epics, contesting the hegemony of Anglo and capitalist dominance in the United States. In all, I posit, these modern(ist) epic novels undermined and revised the foundational ideology of the United States, contesting notions of individualism, progress, and racial hegemony while modernizing the epic form in an effort to refound the nation. The marriage of this classical form to modernist principles produced transcendent literature and offered a strenuous challenge to the interwar status quo, yet ultimately proved a failure: longstanding American ideology was simply too fixed and widespread to be entirely dislodged.

Abstract:
It is sometimes argued in support of discounting future costs and benefits that if we gave the same weight to the future as to the present, we would invest nearly all our income, but never spend it. Rather than enjoying the fruits of our investments, we would always do better to reinvest them. Undiscounted utilitarianism (UU), so the argument goes, is collectively self-defeating. This attempted reductio ad absurdum fails. Regardless of whether each generation successfully followed UU, or merely attempted to follow it, we could never get trapped in endless saving. The real problem is different: without the ability to foresee the end of the world, UU cannot tell us how much to save. Discounting is a defensible response, but only when coupled with a rule against risking catastrophe.
