Abstract:
Today, in the automotive industry, many of the interior parts in the car are made of ABS and PC/ABS polymeric blend. These materials are used in the areas for example: instrument panels, tunnel consoles and door panels. The extensive use of these materials means that it is important to gain in-depth knowledge about the materials,their properties; and also their behaviour when in contact with different chemicals andat different conditions.This study aims to address the potential problem of the polymers used in the interiorof the car - ABS and PC/ABS cracking due to environmental factors. This study proposes to introduce a low-cost test method to compare the polymeric materials and choose the best one for future purposes with the environmental circumstances in mind for materials to have a good service life.During the thesis project, ABS and PC/ABS samples were tested for environmental stress cracking to compare the strained materials against PEG 400 and an assemblyfluid chemical. These tests were conducted at three different temperature levels.Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to verify the polymeric materialsthat the samples were made of. Optical microscope and FTIR were employed to analyzethe samples for crazes / cracks and degradation of material, respectively.This thesis helped in establishing a good starting point for ESC testing of different materials for the organization. The test method was used to test the failure of material sin ESC. It was observed that the chemicals used for the testing were aggressive and accelerated the cracking process in the materials rapidly. Another observation of the tests was that high strain also caused the materials to fail quickly. While comparing the materials, PC/ABS polymer blend was more resistant than ABS materials to cracking when exposed to same strain level during the creep rupture test (test in absence ofchemicals acting as a reference test for ESC).

Abstract:
Monitor inlining is a program rewriting technique to enforce security policy to an untrusted program. The program is modified so that the code for monitoring and policy enforcement is inserted into appropriate points. The embedded code will monitor the action of the program and alter its behavior in case of policy violation (security), otherwise interfere with it as little as possible (conservativity and transparency). For sequential and multi threaded Java-like programs, inlining algorithms have been proposed, but for languages with different concurrency model, the problem remains to be solved. This master thesis is done in the context of the HATS (Highly Adaptable and Trustworthy Software) project. A framework for ConSpec policy enforcement for the Abstract Behavioral Specification (ABS) language is devised. ABS language is the central contribution of the HATS project, its concurrency model is based on Concurrent Object Groups, Asynchronous Method Calls and Futures. In the framework, an adapted version of ConSpec is used and implemented. The inliner is implemented in Java and is applied to the HATS case study trading system, and its correctness properties are discussed.

Det finns ett behov av antiblockeringssystem, ABS, på cyklar då systemet kan reducera antalet allvarliga cykelolyckor. Antiblockeringssystem hindrar fordon från att låsa hjulen och gör därför möjligt att styra vid inbromsning. Det är vanligt på många vägfordon och det är i Sverige lag på att ett antiblockeringssystem ska finnas på vissa typer av fordon. På cyklar är det väldigt ovanligt och syftet med projektet är därför att hitta en lösning till ett mekaniskt antiblockeringssystem till cyklar. Anledningen till att lösningen ska vara mekanisk, är att systemet kan bli både enklare och billigare an ett elektroniskt. Frågeställningen, " Är det möjligt att tillverka ett fungerande mekaniskt antiblockeringssystem för cyklar, som även är billigare än en elektronisk lösning?", besvaras genom dels en litteraturstudie där andra mekaniska antiblockeringssystem studeras och även genom beräkningar på hur egna lösningar beter sig. Ett mekaniskt antiblockeringssystem användes på flygplan under 1950-talet. Systemet kallas Maxaret och utgör grunden för lösningen till systemet för cyklar. Lösningen som är resultatet av projektet är mycket mindre i storlek, jämfört med Maxaret. Det är även ombyggt för att passa till en cykels framhjul, då det är där systemet gör mest nytta. Projektet avgränsas till vissa belastningar och accelerationer som antas påverka antiblockeringssystemet, eftersom nödvändiga data för dessa är svåra och tidskrävande att anskaffa. Lösningen för systemet är presenterat som en CAD-modell. Med beräkningar i MATLAB fås resultatet att lösningen anpassat för en cykel kan fungera som ett antiblockeringssystem.

Abstract:
This aim of this project may be condensed to the following question: Is there an improvement achievable in the braking performance of a vehicle on a rough road? Several follow-up questions arise from the above problem statement: a) What are the causes of the unsatisfactory stopping time and distance when braking on a rough road and how can they be addressed? b) Can the off-road braking of a vehicle be modelled mathematically? c) What are the criteria used to evaluate the on-road braking performance of a vehicle and can the off-road braking performance of a vehicle be evaluated using the same criteria? d) Can the off-road braking performance be improved without compromising the on-road performance? An extensive literature survey is done on existing research addressing these four questions. It is found that, although the literature acknowledges that the braking performance of a vehicle deteriorates under off-road conditions, very little has been done to address it. Two main factors influencing the braking performance are identified, namely the ABS algorithm inputs and tyre force generation characteristics. An experimentally validated vehicle model is developed that serves as the basis from which the research question will be addressed. An FTire model is parameterised and used as the tyre model throughout this study. Three measured off-road terrain profiles are used. The first step in addressing the research question is developing a performance evaluation technique that can easily, quantifiably and visually compare the braking performance of several ABS systems on any road surface, in any condition. The performance evaluation technique considers the stopping distance, longitudinal deceleration, lateral path offset error, and yaw rate error as metrics. The second step is investigating one of the common assumptions found in ABS algorithms, namely that the roll radius is constant. This is investigated experimentally and it is concluded that the assumption is valid on smooth and rough road surfaces when using the kinematic definition of the roll radius, but invalid when using the kinetic definition of the roll radius. Investigation of the influence of the tyre force generation characteristics on the braking performance is the third step. It is found that the tyre normal force variation and corresponding suspension force variation correlates closely with the braking performance. A higher suspension force variation is associated with longer stopping distances. The final step is the development of a three step control strategy that aims to reduce the suspension force variation. This is done by estimating the wheel hop using easy to measure states, predicting the suspension force variation based on these estimates, and finally selecting the ideal suspension configuration. The control strategy, called the WiSDoM algorithm, was evaluated by doing several simulations on the three off-road road profiles, with different braking points as the only changed variable. The WiSDoM algorithm’s performance was compared with the baseline vehicle performance and found to decrease the stopping distance on all three off-road road profiles, without negatively affecting the stability of the vehicle. The WiSDoM algorithm did not have a significant influence on the braking performance on a smooth road.

er Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Cevdet Kaynak September 2009, 55 pages Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer is one of the most popular copolymer having an elastomeric butadiene phase dispersed in rigid amorphous styrene and semi-crystalline acrylonitrile. Due to double bonds in the polybutadiene phase, ABS copolymers are very sensitive to photo-oxidative degradation. Photo-oxidation of butadiene rubber phase results in the formation of chromorphores and these chromorphores act as initiators in photo-oxidative degradation and after a while ABS starts yellowing. In this work, the relationship between the UV light and the yellowing of ABS samples was also investigated with respect to time. In this study, pure, light stabilized and commercial ABS samples were aged under UV light. As the UV light intensity increased from 800 to 2800 &
#61549
W/cm2, yellowing of the samples were increased for pure ABS. This increase in yellowing of the samples was about 27 times higher compared to lower energy. In this study, UV stabilizers IRGANOX 1076 (sterically hindered phenolic antioxidant), IRGAFOS 168 (hydrolycally stable phosphite stabilizer) and TINUVIN P (hydroxyphenol benzotriazole) were used alone or in combination with each other. Pure ABS samples, commercial ABS samples and UV stabilized ABS samples were aged under the same UV light. UV aging degradation was followed by measuring the yellowness of the samples at certain time intervals. Yellowness of the samples was followed by using Coloreye XTH Spectrometer. Degradation in ABS, however, was followed by using FTIR with an increase in the peak area of carbonyl groups in the ABS matrix. Both color analysis and the FTIR analysis showed that combination of the IRGANOX 1076 and IRGAFOS 168 stabilizers gave the best stabilization. This revealed that combination of phenol and phosphate containing stabilizer is the most useful combination to prevent photo-oxidative degradation of ABS copolymer. Additionally, vegetable oil was applied to the surface of a new set of ABS samples and these samples were aged for 700 h. Yellowing tendency of these samples was compared with the yellowing tendency of ABS samples that are directly aged for 500 h. It was clearly observed that samples with oil smeared had more resistance to UV radiation with respect to others. This shows that oil acts protective layer to the UV light and oxygen and slow down the photo-oxidative degradation. Lastly some commercial ABS samples were compared to each other with respect to their yellowing tendency. Commercial ABS samples coded as K, L, A, B, C and D were aged under UV light at about 500 h. Sample A showed the best resistance against the yellowing among the other commercial ABS samples.

Abstract:
ABS (arcylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) is one of the most common polymers in electrical and electronic equipment. In this thesis, ABS plastics from computer equipment housings have been investigated to find the effect of reprocessing upon chemical and physical properties. A torque rheometer was used to simulate the recycling process. Two ABS plastics were reprocessed at different temperatures and rotational speeds; the other one was multiply reprocessing for different number of cycles. After reprocessing, degradation levels of the reprocessed materials were investigated by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectrometry), GPC (gel permeation chromatography) and DMTA (dynamic mechanical thermal analysis); the change of additives was studied by GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry); impact testing and tensile testing of reprocessed materials were carried out, and the fracture surfaces were examined using SEM (scanning electron microscopy). It was found that cross-linking of the rubber phase occurred at high reprocessing temperature. During multiple reprocessing, cross-linking of rubber might be accompanied by a slight increased thermo-oxidative degradation of ABS. Some additives were lost during processing. The impact strength of ABS plastic reduced after reprocessing, particularly at high temperature. During multiple reprocessing, impact strength of ABS plastic reduced continuously. Failure strain reduced after reprocessing. By SEM, the heterogeneity of reprocessed materials and the breakdown of microstructure of ABS polymer could be observed from the fracture surfaces of ‘after reprocessing’ samples. In this study, it was found that defects were possibly an important reason for the reduction of impact strength and failure strain after reprocessing at low temperature; at high reprocessing temperature, the reduction of impact strength was perhaps related to cross-linking of the rubber phase; the lack of adherence along SAN/rubber particles interface, which might be promoted by degradation of rubber, was an important reason for the reduction of impact strength of ABS plastic.

Os nanocompósitos de polímero e argila têm sido foco de muitos estudos nos últimos 20 anos e existem algumas aplicações comerciais destes produtos. Existe um amplo potencial de desenvolvimento com aplicações em larga escala previstas para os próximos 5 a 10 anos. Estes nanocompósitos são obtidos em geral a partir de argilas esmectíticas submetidas a processos de quaternização, a fim de torná-las organofílicas. O polímero é intercalado entre as camadas lamelares da argila, formando estruturas intercaladas ou esfoliadas. As blendas poliméricas são materiais que reúnem as características de seus dois (ou mais) componentes melhorando as propriedades do material. Este trabalho tem por objetivo a obtenção de nanocompósito a partir de uma argila organofilizadas, e a blenda (ABS/PA). Para efeito de comparação é produzida uma mistura utilizando os mesmos equipamentos e métodos utilizando uma montmorilonita natural. É utilizado o método de intercalação no estado fundido com extrusão e injeção e caracterização deste material com DRX (Difração de raios-X), MEV (Microscopia eletrônica de transmissão) e verificação do desempenho mecânico e térmico.
In the last 20 years, polymer layered clay have been focus of many studies, and some commercial applications of these products are yet in place. A wide potential of development of large-scale production is foreseen to happen in the next 5 to 10 years exists. Nanocomposites obtained from clays, usually esmectites clays are modified by cationic modifiers in order to become organoclays. The polymer enters the galleries of the clay layers, producing intercalated or exfoliated structures. Polymeric blends are materials that congregate the characteristics of its two (or more) components improving the properties of the material. This work has objective to obtain a nanocomposite from an organoclay and a polymeric blend ABS/PA. To compare results is prepared a mixture using a sodium natural Montmorilonite, using same process conditions and equipments. The method used is direct melt intercalation using a melt extruder and injection molding. The characterization of this material is done by X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope and verification of the mechanical and thermal performance.

The principle of braking in road vehicles involves the conversion of kinetic energy into heat. This high energy conversion therefore demands an appropriate rate of heat dissipation if a reasonable temperature and performance stability are to be maintained. While the design, construction, and location features severely limit the heat dissipation function of the friction brake, electromagnetic brakes work in a relatively cool condition and avoid problems that friction brakes face by using a totally different working principle and installation location. By using the electromagnetic brake as supplementary retardation equipment, the friction brakes can be used less frequently and therefore practically never reach high temperatures. The brake linings thus have a longer life span, and the potential "brake fade" problem can be avoided. It is apparent that the electromagnetic brake is an essential complement to the safe braking of heavy vehicles. In this thesis, a new mathematical model for electromagnetic brakes is proposed to describe their static characteristics (angular speed versus brake torque). The performance of the new mathematical model is better than the other three models available in the literature in a least-square sense. Compared with old models that treat reluctance as a constant, our model treats reluctance as a function of speed. In this way, the model represents more precisely the aggregate effect of all side effects such as degree of saturation of the iron in the magnet, demagnetizing effects, and air gap. The software program written in Matlab can be used to code different brake characteristics (both static and dynamic) and evaluate their performance in different road scenarios. A controller is designed that achieves wheel-slip control for vehicle motion. The objective of this brake control system is to keep the wheel slip at an ideal value so that the tire can still generate lateral and steering forces as well as shorter stopping distances. In order to control the wheel slip, vehicle system dynamic equations are given in terms of wheel slip. The system shows the nonlinearities and uncertainties. Hence, a nonlinear control strategy based on sliding mode, which is a standard approach to tackle the parametric and modeling uncertainties of a nonlinear system, is chosen for slip control. Due to its robustness properties, the sliding mode controller can solve two major difficulties involved in the design of a braking control algorithm: 1) the vehicle system is highly nonlinear with time-varying parameters and uncertainties; 2) the performance of the system depends strongly on the knowledge of the tire/road surface condition. A nominal vehicle system model is simulated in software and a sliding mode controller is designed to maintain the wheel slip at a given value. The brake control system has desired performance in the simulation. It can be proven from this study that the electromagnetic brake is effective supplementary retardation equipment. The application and control of electromagnetic brakes might be integrated with the design of vehicles and their friction braking systems so that an ideal match of the complementary benefits of both systems might be obtained to increase safety to a maximum while reducing vehicle operating costs to a minimum.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on comparisons of usability of distinct types of glues to attach specimens. The specimens were glued using 4 types of glue: BISON Power Adhesive, BISON Epoxy Universal, PATTEX Repair Epoxy 5 min and a mixture of acetone with diluted ABS plastic as the last. The specimens underwent tensile and impact tests. For the tensile test, the specimens were made in 3 variants: blunt frontal joint, bevelled joint and gradually folded joint. For the impact test, the specimens were made in the form of a rod with a V-shaped notch. All variants of the joints consisted of 5 specimens with 3 unglued specimens for reference. The testing was conducted on the ZD 10/90 tensile strength machine and a Charpy impact test machine from the WPM company. The thesis contains technical-economic evaluation of the results of the tests with comparisons of the individual glues and forms.

This thesis is concerned with ABS algorithm project for commercial vehicles. In the first part the reader is introduced to the history and first usage of the anti-blocking system, its principles and main functions. There are also driving algorithms and functionality system control. The second part is dedicated to the dynamic model, programs and ADAMS Car and MATLAB Simulink interfaces. Da quando è iniziata l'era del Cloud Computing molte cose sono cambiate, ora è possibile ottenere un server in tempo reale e usare strumenti automatizzati per installarvi applicazioni. In questa tesi verrà descritto lo strumento MODDE (Model-Driven Deployment Engine), usato per il deployment automatico, partendo dal linguaggio ABS. ABS è un linguaggio a oggetti che permette di descrivere le classi in una maniera astratta. Ogni componente dichiarato in questo linguaggio ha dei valori e delle dipendenze. Poi si procede alla descrizione del linguaggio di specifica DDLang, col quale vengono espressi tutti i vincoli e le configurazioni finali. In seguito viene spiegata l’architettura di MODDE. Esso usa degli script che integrano i tool Zephyrus e Metis e crea un main ABS dai tre file passati in input, che serve per effettuare l’allocazione delle macchine in un Cloud. Inoltre verranno introdotti i due sotto-strumenti usati da MODDE: Zephyrus e Metis. Il primo si occupa di scegliere quali servizi installare tenendo conto di tutte le loro dipendenze, cercando di ottimizzare il risultato. Il secondo gestisce l’ordine con cui installarli tenendo conto dei loro stati interni e delle dipendenze. Con la collaborazione di questi componenti si ottiene una installazione automatica piuttosto efficace. Infine dopo aver spiegato il funzionamento di MODDE viene spiegato come integrarlo in un servizio web per renderlo disponibile agli utenti. Esso viene installato su un server HTTP Apache all’interno di un container di Docker.

Antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is a common additive in flame retardant formulations and a study has been made to determine the effects of adding it alone, or with four commercial brominated materials (OBDPO, BTBPE, TBBA and PDBS80) to ABS polymer. The results focus upon mechanical, rheological, microscopical and flame retardant properties, and the effects of different Sb2O3 grades with average particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 11.8 μm. The Sb2O3 was mainly studied up to 12 wt% loading in ABS, since this is considered to be the maximum level used in commercial flame retardant formulations.

Polyaniline (PANI) chemical synthesis was monitored in situ by means of electrochemical impedance, open circuit potential (Voc) and mass variation. We verify that the final properties of the polymer could be practically defined after inflection point in the potential profile. The impedance data were decisive to understand this behavior, showing only a small change after inflection point. Impedance results and mass variations during the synthesis contributed to understand the induction mechanisms that occur in the initial stages of the polymerization process. Also, it was performed an investigation on the influence of different variables (temperature, monomer:oxidant molar ratio, oxidant, pH value, use of inert salts at high concentrations) in the PANI chemical synthesis process as well as in its physicochemical properties. In this work, it was estimated the characteristic points of PANI through the Voc measurements during the chemical synthesis, based on an experimental design methodology. This methodology allowed an efficient mapping of PANI synthesis process as well as its interactions with each variable previously described. The results indicated that the oxidant employed in the synthesis influences in the final chemical and physical properties of this polymer. The studies performed on the final properties of PANI were the degree of oxidation and electric resistivity. Moreover, the yield the degree of polymerization was also evaluated. The experimental design methodology was also used in order to understand the influence of the preparation conditions on the final properties of the blends in poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and polyaniline obtained by the co-dissolving components in a common organic solvent. The variables evaluated were the PANI content in the blend, m-cresol:chloroform rate (solvent ratio), dopant (DBSA or CSA) and acrylonitrile content in the ABS. The results showed that these variables are able to change significantly the flexibility and electric conductivity of the blends. On the other hand, the dopant used mainly influences in the conductivity, suggesting that the DBSA is the better for the development of PANI/ABS blends more conductive. After better prepare conditions of the blends, the percolation threshold was established at around 3 wt% of PANI, forming a flexible blend with conductivity of approximately 3 S.cm-1. The optical properties of the blend films were characterized by UV Vis-NIR. The conduction mechanisms of the blends were investigated using a dc electric conductivity in the range from 80 to 320 K. Using the Mott s theory, it was found that the conductivity in the blends is a threedimensional variable range hopping mechanism. The Mott s temperature values, density of states at the Fermi energy, average hopping distance and barrier height for the blends were calculated and discussed in this work. Also, two possible technological applications were proposed to the PANI/ABS system, including: composite varistors and antistatic or electromagnetic protection of electronic devices. The varistors were prepared with 30% of PANI, which showed a low rupture voltage at around 10 V and a non linearity coefficient of approximately 9,2. On the paint shape and when deposited on cardboard, this material can be employed as protector system of electronic devices. Another important characteristic is the conductivity of this material, which is controlled by the number of paint layers deposited on the cardboard.
A síntese química da polianilina (PANI) foi monitorada in situ por meio das técnicas de impedância eletroquímica, potencial de circuito aberto (Voc) e variação de massa. Foi detectado que as propriedades finais do polímero são definidas logo após o do máximo da curva de Voc e antes do platô final. Os dados de impedância foram decisivos para o entendimento desta característica, apresentando somente uma pequena variação depois do máximo de Voc. Os dados de impedância e variação de massa durante a síntese também contribuíram para a compreensão dos processos que ocorrem durante o período de indução da síntese da PANI. Em seguida, foi feita uma investigação da influência das variáveis de síntese tais como: temperatura, razão monômero:oxidante, tipo de agente oxidante, pH e o uso de LiCl na síntese química da PANI, bem como nas propriedades físico-químicas do polímero obtido. Para avaliar as influências destas variáveis na síntese da PANI foi utilizada a técnica de Voc e para avaliar pontos característicos foi empregada a metodologia de planejamento fatorial. Esta técnica permitiu estabelecer um rápido e compreensivo mapeamento do processo de síntese da PANI, e a importância de cada variável bem como suas interações. A variável que mais influenciou em todos os estágios do processo foi tipo de agente oxidante. Depois, foram estudas as propriedades finais do polímero tais como grau de oxidação e resistividade elétricas. O rendimento de polimerização também foi avaliado, todas estas respostas também foram avaliadas utilizando um planejamento fatorial que, por sua vez, mostrou que a variável que mais influencia nas propriedades finais do polímero é o tipo de agente oxidante. Em um segundo momento, foram estudadas as influências das condições de preparo das blendas de PANI com o poli(acrilonitrila-butadieno-estireno) (ABS) preparadas pelo método de codissolução de ambos os componentes em um solvente comum através de um planejamento fatorial. As variáveis estudadas foram: quantidade de PANI nas blendas, razão m-cresol;clorofórmio, tipo de dopante (DBSA ou CSA), concentração de dopante e teor de acrilonitrila no ABS. As respostas monitoradas foram a flexibilidade e a condutividade elétrica das blendas obtidas. Os resultados mostraram que a quantidade de PANI nas blendas e o teor de acrilonitrila no ABS foram as variáveis que mais influenciaram em ambas as respostas. O tipo de dopante mostrou somente influência na resposta condutividade, onde o DBSA se mostrou o melhor dopante para se obter blendas de PANI/ABS mais condutoras. Depois das melhores condições de preparo estabelecidas, o limite de percolação do sistema foi determinado, onde o valor estimado foi de 3% em massa de PANI na blenda, apresentando uma condutividade de 3 S.cm-1. Para se compreender o mecanismo de condutividade das amostras, foi feito um estudo da condutividade DC das blendas no intervalo de temperatura de 80-320 K. Os dados foram tratados aplicando a teoria de Mott, onde o mecanismo de condutividade obedece ao modelo de Saltos de Tamanhos Variáveis em três dimensões, e os parâmetros de Mott foram estimados. Duas aplicações para o sistema PANI/ABS foram propostas. Onde preparados compósitos varistores de PANI/ABS, sendo que o material preparado com 30% de PANI apresentou uma tensão de ruptura de aproximadamente 10 V e um coeficiente de não linearidade de 9,2, com estes valores o compósito pode ser utilizado na proteção de equipamentos eletrônicos. Na outra aplicação proposta neste trabalho, foi preparada uma tinta de PANI-DBSA/ABS, que foi depositada sobre papelão, a resistência elétrica do material pode ser controlada pelo número de camadas de tinta. Deste modo o material pode ser utilizado na proteção antiestática e eletromagnética também de componentes eletrônico.
