Abstract:
Abstract Shear-wave polarization analysis has been performed on data from twelve earthquakes recorded in central Italy. These data are part of a set of high quality seismograms recorded by a three-component digital network installed in Abruzzo region after a Ms = 5.8 earthquake on 7 May 1984. Analysis performed on 2 to 6 Hz bandpass-filtered seismograms reveals shear-wave splitting. In order to determine the direction for which the time separation between the two split S waves is maximum, the horizontal traces are rotated in the range 10 to 90° with steps of 10°. At each step the cross-correlation between the two shear waves and the time separation is estimated. The azimuth of 50°N yields the highest correlation coefficient and the maximum time separation of about 0.09 sec. This direction and the orthogonal to it represent axes of minimum and maximum shear-wave velocity respectively. If the time delay is distributed over the whole hypocenter-seismic station path, the maximum variation in velocity is at least 1.4 per cent. The theoretical linear polarization of particle motion at the source is verified after correcting the seismograms for the anisotropic propagation effect. A distribution of vertical cracks aligned in the direction 140°N may explain the observed anisotropy. The stress field deduced from the focal mechanism of the Abruzzo earthquake is compatible with this hypothetical crack distribution.

Abstract:
Transport and mobility plans imply strategies and actions that affect the environment. The European Union has introduced in 2001 the strategic environmental assessment (SEA) to take into account and mitigate adverse environmental effects in planning and decision-making. SEA limited implementation has attracted the interest of many scholars that have sought methods able to assess the quality of SEA processes by identifying vices and virtues in practice. In this paper, we measure the quality of eight SEAs for transport and mobility plans of regional and provincial administrations of Italy. Results show that the overall quality level of SEA reports is only barely sufficient, Abruzzo is among the virtuous and Piedmont among the critical administrations. We also stress that the determination of impact significance has received the worse quality score. We finally compare our results to other Italian and British homologous cases finding interesting and generally confirmative evidences.

Abstract:
Although there are increasing reports on the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in wild species, this is the first case of listeriosis in sea turtle. An adult female Caretta caretta was rescued after being stranded alive along the coast of the Abruzzo region (Italy) in summer 2021. The turtle died in 6 days due to respiratory failure. The necropsy showed widespread organ lesions, such as yellow foci of necrosis in many organs, gastrointestinal erosions, pericarditis, and granulomatous pneumonia. Microbiological and histological analyses were performed on several organs. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from multiple organs, indicating a case of septicaemic listeriosis, and the genome was sequenced and characterized. All the colonies analysed belonged to the same strain serogroup IVb, ST388, and CC388.

Abstract:
Since the origin of the carbonate platform concept, the reconstruction of the geometry and the evolution of the margin has been an intriguing topic. The Latium-Abruzzi platform is one of the largest shallow water domains of the Central Apennines, however, the reconstruction of the geometry and evolution of its margin has been classically problematic because the latter has been erased by the out-of-sequence Olevano-Antrodoco thrust system. The investigated area is placed in the Prenestini Mountains, the southernmost portion of the Sabina Domain, where a Cretaceous to Neogene carbonate succession, ascribed the Latium-Abruzzi platform margin, crops out. Stratigraphic and facies analyses showed a Late Cretaceous extensional stage that produced two main fault-block platforms, respectively, South Eastern Prenestini and South Western Prenestini platforms, developed westward of the large Latium-Abruzzi Platform domain. In these platforms, during the Paleocene–Eocene interval, pelagite deposition coincides with the main relative sea-level rise. Instead, during the following falling stage, the seafloor, consisting of the Cretaceous carbonate, was in the wave abrasion zone and the pelagic carbonate mud was swept away or trapped in local depressions or fractures (neptunian dykes), whereas the coarse sediment produced by the erosion of indented and fractured substrate formed polygenic conglomerate accumulation on the Cretaceuos carbonate platform substrate. Successively, an isolated homoclinal ramp, the Guadagnolo Fm, Aquitanian to Serravallian in age, developed on the drowned fault-block platforms, suggesting that during Neogene the articulation of the substrate of the two fault-block platforms had to be limited to host the bioclastic sedimentation of the Guadagnolo Fm and to allow the development of a carbonate ramp depositional profile.

Abstract:
AbstractThe most recent research studies into the long-term landscape evolution of the Abruzzo area, carried out over the last twenty years at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, are based on an integrated approach incorporating structural geology and geomorphology and, in particular, the geomorphometry of topographic and hydrographic aspects, geological and structural-geomorphological surveys and mapping supported by morpho-stratigraphic and chronological constraints. The geomorphological analyses have allowed us to outline the main stages of geomorphological evolution and to identify the factors that have contributed to the landscape shaping of the Apennine Chain, the Adriatic Piedmont and the fluvial plains and coastal sectors, up to the Tremiti islands. In the Apennine Chain, landscape evolution — in a ridge, valley and basin system — is connected to the regional uplift, local tectonic subsidence and local base level variations, which have led to changes in the drainage systems, from exoreic to endorheic (in the intermontane basins) and then to exoreic again. In the Adriatic Piedmont, landscape shaping is connected to uplifting and eustatic sea-level fluctuations, which have induced the formation of a structure-controlled drainage system and the shaping of systems of entrenched alluvial fans and large consequent river valleys, with flights of river terraces. In the coastal Adriatic area — composed of a coastal plain-coastal slope system (northern and southern coast) and of a cliffed rocky coast (central coast, Tremiti) interrupted by river valleys — landscape shaping is the result of selective erosion due to the interaction between marine geomorphic processes and slope processes connected to Late Quaternary eustatic fluctuations.

Abstract:
2012 - 2013
The object of the doctoral thesis, archival and philological topic, conduces to a double level of exegesis, treating on transcription and analysis of handwritten papers Corpus on Abruzzo of Giuseppe Maria Galanti’s, one of the greatest exponents of the Neapolitan Enlightenment, lived between 1743 and 1806, in an historical period of great political changes. Galanti is also known to have been a student of the economist Antonio Genovesi which continued and innovated the reform program, holding important positions within the administrative structure of the Naples Kingdom, which enabled him to analyze the conditions and the role of the provinces, engaging his life with great uprightness in a route of deep knowledge of reality and the design of reforms that led the South moving away from the state of backwardness and heading towards modernization. The work is centered on the documents of Faldone or Cartella Abruzzo, organized in 15 dossiers, moving from private Archive of the Author's home in Santa Croce del Sannio (today Benevento, before Molise) and actually in the Fondo Galanti of Historical Archive of Campobasso with provisional numbering 13. It’s a patchwork of heterogeneous documents consisting mainly of: autograph and anonymous letters, memories, notes, news, travel journals, selve, catechismi and relations that contribute to the historical-philological reconstruction of a segment of the work of Galanti, who was an economist, historian, philosopher, memoirist, politician, writer, traveler, as well as cultural operator, publisher and founder of the Società Letteraria and Tipografica, attentive to the cultural developments not only Italian, but also European, so as to promote circulation in the Kingdom of the Enlightenment’s ideas and principles through translations and editions. The time span of the research is to revolve primarily around the 90s of the eighteenth century, ranging within a dense network of various papers, conveying handwritings and different content and sometimes titles, dating and doubtful assignments, which have been reconstructed thanks to close connection between the sources and autograph and not autograph documents and among the works published ante and post mortem of the Author. The Fondo Galanti consists of 21 folders for a total of 8000 papers regarding the time span of 40 years of the Author's life, starting from the famous Lettera filosofica of 1761 up to the Ultime memorie of 1799-1806. Specifically the documents of Cartella Abruzzo, whose contents belong on the natural state, political, social, economic, fiscal, demographic and lifestyle of the three provinces of Abruzzo: Teramo, Chieti and L'Aquila, in addition to containing Bozza di una relazione per la Marca di Ancona, were appropriately microfilmed under a previous editorial project of critical edition of the while Corpus of Galanti’s works, supported in the first phase from professors Gabriele De Rosa and Augusto Placanica, and then from professors Pasquale Alberto De Lisio, Sebastiano Martelli and Francesco Barra. It was later made an analytical register of the papers by explanatory summaries of the main content, feature naming and numbering indication of the manuscripts; the selection of materials to be transcribed and analyzed was then evaluated as a result of a “collation” between published and unpublished documents. It was decided as well to transcribe unknowns manuscripts by the scholars and displaying them in a rich Appendix accompanied by a Note to the text in which the conservative and linguistic choices were indicated. After a detailed study of primary and secondary literature sources, it’s preferred not to focus the work on the documents relating to Teramo, already abundantly treated in the works of the historian Vincenzo Clemente, but rather on those that describe the natural, economic and social state of Chieti and L'Aquila, through letters, "catechismi” and relations, with the aim of integrating the critical work already done by other scholars of the Abruzzo region and providing new insights and critical historiographical survey of the South. The documents also analyzed for thematic and chronological units, turn out also of particular interest to understand the way in which, in the late eighteenth century, the reformism of Genovesi had penetrated the provinces of Naples, enabling them, thanks to the work of a group of great reformers, to keep alive a heated dialectic between peripherals reality and the central government, concerning public economics topics, through the activities of the Società Patriottiche established in Teramo in 1789. Sources have also revealed important to witness the systematic rewriting of the Author, the rearrangement in which his works were continually subjected and the intense activity of its correspondents: inspectors of the Department, administrators, citizens elected, tax lawyers, judges of Hearing, medium and large owners exponents of the radical progressive bourgeoisie and reforming how Delphic brothers, but also as Giacinto Dragonetti, Antonio Nolli, Vincenzo Minicucci, Giacinto Cipriani, etc. This suggests an analytical framework of extreme historical and economic interest, very useful for the purposes of historical debate and rather enlightening to enrich the already dense workshop historical studies on Galanti, known as the father of statistics, thanks to the variety of topics ranging from the quantitative data for statistical surveys (list of the number of marriages, murders, prisons), demographic trends and the state of tax collection in the provinces. It was also detected the element of "normalization" of eighteenth-century language and the process of "risemantizzazione" operated by economists on the Italian language it is to receive loanwords from foreign languages, latinisms, as well as typical entries of the bureaucratic language. It’s very interesting the specific writing forms of Galanti ranging from the use of selve, interpolations and notes to the manuscripts, of travel reports, objective and structured in a nominal and paratactic style and use of catechismi, questionnaires and forms sent to the local authorities, senior officials and priests of the territories visited. What we wanted to show in the thesis is how relevant was the work of Galanti, who in a time of strong political and social contrasts, where the provinces of Naples Kingdom, oppressed by feudal privileges, had rejected the rigid patterns of the tradition in the name of freedom of thought, of progress and "civilization", not hesitating to show a total membership to the calls of modern European culture and enlightenment, as well as the agronomic model of Marca anconetana face to conquer a new horizon of economic development, thanks to the rotation of crops, livestock and permanent upgrading of road infrastructure. The intellectual from Molise survey assumes an even more value by using an empirical and interdisciplinary approach in which come together: physical geography, historical and economic geography, demography, sociology, allowing it to mend the most significant part of an history of the South really oriented on the "interests of men." Abstract:

Abstract:
The increase of human settlements and activities in coastal areas is causing a significant impact on coastal water quality. Predicting and monitoring the latter is of fundamental importance for assessing sustainable coastal engineering and ecosystem health. This trend is strongly influenced by the presence of rivers’ mouths, acting as critical links between inland and sea. Forecasting river discharges and overflows, using hydrometeorological modelling, can provide a quantitative estimate of the excessive supply of sea nutrients, favouring algal proliferation and eutrophication phenomena. The river overflow contributes to the increase of the coastal bacterial concentration, contaminating marine bioindicators, such as bivalve molluscs. Coastal water status can be monitored by satellite high-resolution optical spectroradiometers, such as Sentinel-2 constellation, capable to retrieve Chlorophyll-a concentration as well as total suspended sediments, at the resolution of about 10 meters. This remote mapping is complementary to in situ samplings, both essential for supporting decisions on the management of coastal mollusc farming and fishing. In this work, we report the recent advancements in hydrological model-based prediction of river surges and remote sensing techniques exploiting Sentinel-2 imagery as well as their implications on coastal water quality management. As a pilot area, we select the central Adriatic Sea in the Mediterranean basin and the Abruzzo region coastline in Italy.

Abstract:
O eixo temático é a clínica médica.
