Full textThe Abrams tank has had an Operational Requirements Document (ORD) requirement for embedded training (ET) since 1994 and has successfully demonstrated the capability as early as 2001. The most challenging aspect of implementing ET has been to get the Abrams combat development community (User) and materiel development community (Product Manager) to equally consider the need for ET among competing combat capability. The need and priority for embedded training has not been effectively conveyed. Due to the interpretations of embedded training requirements, the direction to PM Abrams to implement embedded training has been weak at best, while the perceived User need for ET continues to grow. Since the technology has been demonstrated, the combat developer has begun to understand the capability and more effectively define the desired state (how he would use it and its benefits). Furthermore, the Army's style of fighting has changed; therefore, the Army's method of training must also change. Embedded training should be recognized by the materiel developer as an essential training tool necessary to keep Soldiers' skills sharp in the changing training environment.

To prepare for combat, the US Army utilizes the National Training Center (NTC) to test and certify all units before deployment to combat operations. During the past 5 years, observers have noted below standard Operational Readiness (OR) Rates in the MI fleet during training at NTC. The Army's Program Manager for the MI Abrams requested this thesis examine the MI performance at NTC, possible reasons for the performance, and recommend solutions to those issues. The first research question asks if Ml OR rates are statistically below the Army Standard. Through collection of OR data throughout the Army, this study confirmed using statistical hypothesis testing that OR rates at NTC are below standard. The next three questions used regression analysis to identify possible reasons for the low performance. During the course of the study, mileage driven on each tank both before and during NTC was proven to have no effect on tank performance. Analysis of the parts stockage breadth at NTC warehouses was shown to be effective at predicting parts failures, but could recover up to 1.3% OR rate by adding 28 additional parts to the normal stockage list. Finally, analysis of individual unit maintenance performance measures showed individual programs have significant effect on Ml OR rates, specifically when examining controlled substitution policy and proper reporting procedures. Recommendations for the correction of the problem include the development of a more reliable mileage reporting system, additional research specifically into the time requirements for each unit, additional training for unit maintenance leaders, and parts failures trends during high-intensity training.

Full textThis thesis is an independent study to conduct a detailed problem analysis to determine if a methodology can be derived to map the states of the M1A2 simulator to specific doctrinal tasks. Specifically, what are Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTP); Crew Drills; and Battle Drills and can they be mapped to specific states of the M1A2 simulator? If so, then demonstrate such a methodology using a small subset of the M1A2 simulator stimuli and a given doctrinal task. Additionally, to identify problem areas associated with state to task mapping, such as 'state explosion' and recommend a possible solution. We conclude through our research that a methodology can be derived and have demonstrated that it is reasonable to take input in the form of stimuli from the driver's instrument panel and evaluate current state and anticipate future states within the context of a given tactical or training scenario.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has mandated that every component that meets certain cost and management criteria in the Department of Defense's (DoD) tangible inventory must have a valid Item Unique Identification (IUID) mark by December 2010. The IUID program is expected to increase force readiness, enhance the lifecycle management of assets, and provide more accurate asset valuation to achieve unqualified audit opinions on DoD financial statements. One of the challenges of the program is to achieve IUID-marking saturation throughout in-use, or legacy, inventories with minimal interruption of operational readiness. The purpose of this project is to propose an effective implementation strategy for the legacy items that meet the DoD's requirements for IUID marking in the US Marine Corps M1A1 Abrams tank community. This plan could potentially serve as a model for other communities facing the challenge of IUID implementation. This project examines different implementation alternatives and identifies and develops the determined best course of action. In addition, an estimation of the costs to implement the chosen plan will be provided for comparison and decision-making purposes.
