Abstract:
Abraham Kuyper was arguably a Christian who had brought the implications of the Christian faith to the public sphere in a remarkable way. For Kuyper, the Christian faith had equally emphasized the importance of transformation of the heart and transformation of the society. Using a historical theology approach, this article attempts to present a sketch of Kuyper’s thought on the public implications of the Christian faith, which includes his concept of sphere sovereignty, visible organic church, and common grace. By elaborating on those three Kuyperian concepts, this article seeks to provide an introduction to Kuyper studies and to increase the reception of Kuyper’s theology in Indonesia.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Maranatha’: Kuyper is coming! From sermon to party speech: Abraham Kuyper’s eloquenceIn this article, we present a rhetorical-historical analysis of the speech Maranatha by Dutch politician and former pastor Abraham Kuyper. Kuyper’s style of speech stands out in nineteenth century Dutch political culture, as it is generally more expressive and aimed at the public compared to the pragmatic and legal style of his colleagues in Parliament. Through close reading of the speech Maranatha, we show how Kuyper’s political rhetoric was influenced by various rhetorical elocutio and pathos strategies from pulpit oratory that he learned during his time as a pastor. By reconstructing the professors, academic tradition and homiletic manuals that influenced Kuyper’s theological education, we have determined four main advices for pulpit oratory: 1) choose one main theme that is well known, 2) create a feeling of unity through ‘venturing’ into the public, 3) make sure the speech is understandable to a large public and 4) use stylistic pathos figures in order to move the audience. Kuyper employs all four advices in Maranatha for the purpose of creating a sense of unity within his audience.

Abstract:
AbstractAbraham Kuyper, Dutch Prime Minister (1901–1905) and modern Calvinist, was a controversial figure, not least in his foreign affairs. Yet while Kuyper's legacy has been felt in the world of religious, especially Christian, political, and social theory, very little has been made of Kuyper's actual record as a foreign policy maker and a Prime Minister. So, what was Kuyper's “Christian” perspective and policy on foreign affairs? Using newly available English translations, this article outlines Kuyper's “overseas manifesto” made most plain in Our Program, and compares it against Kuyper's commentary and policy in three major foreign crises: the Boer Cause, in South Africa; the “pacification” of Aceh, in modern-day Indonesia; and finally, the calamity of the Great War in Europe. From these I will paint an introductory, if general, picture of a serious, religious foreign policy maker, and a commentator on world affairs; a complex picture of religiously inflected policy in the early 20th century, with lessons and warnings for scholars of religion and foreign policy today.

ABSTRACT: This article is focused on systematic explanation of Abraham Kuypers thought on Calvinism and science. Some of significant contributions of Calvinism are the theological foundation of science and its liberation from churchs invasion. This article uses a philosophical approach in its methodology and not a theological one. Therefore, Ifrequently make critical dialogues with the philosophy of science in reading and analyzing Kuypers notion. Final ending of this research is an articulation of its implications to the ethics of science. On this point, I will consider the contribution of David Resnick. Abstract:
AbstractThis article considers the development of Abraham Kuyper's theology of baptism during his early life, from 1859 as a theology student at Leiden University through 1874, the conclusion of his pastoral career in the Netherlands Reformed Church. After initially rejecting the institutional church, Kuyper began to develop a theology for a free church in order to bring Calvinism into rapport with modern times. This paper argues that Kuyper's theology of baptism developed as part of this vision of a modern Calvinist church, one that was both a voluntary institution and an objective, divinely sanctioned institution. The fluctuations of Kuyper's early baptismal theology reflect the tensions of this proposal for a modern church, but by the end or his pastoral career Kuyper had settled on the primacy of the institutional church in baptism.

Abstract:
It will come as no surprise that theological modernism and Abraham Kuyper do not get on. Famously, Kuyper spoke of modernism as “a fata morgana in the Christian domain.” Kuyper gave the Fata Morgana speech at various occasions, and made the term “modernism” (modernisme) current at the time. The text was published in 1871. This article discusses Kuyper’s view of theological modernism, especially the 1871 address, which is his most extensive treatment and criticism of the phenomenon. I argue that the attack on modernism was done in a modern way. The argument is more philosophy of religion-style than (old-fashioned) dogmatic theology. Actually, Kuyper compared world views and argued for the superiority of his own system of thought, which was allegedly geared to reality, whereas modernism to him represented a foul compromise with the spirit of the times, based on a superficial understanding of reality. The rhetorical power of the speech lies predominantly in the suggestion that modernism (although a necessary phase in the course of history) will go down and “we” will prevail. The speech turns on the double meaning of “real” and “realism.” Although the modernists aim to comply and hence make a compromise with the predominant “realism” of the nineteenth century, they actually bypass reality: no real God, no real prayer, no real sin, and no real church.

Abstract:
Reformational philosophy as developed by Dirk Vollenhoven and Herman Dooyeweerd took the stage against the background of Reformational thought as seen in the work of Abraham Kuyper. Together they developed a systematic elaboration of Kuyper’s notion of sphere sovereignty. However, whereas Kuyper had largely developed his insights in a social context, Vollenhoven and Dooyeweerd carried this basic insight through far more rigorously and comprehensively than had their pioneering predecessor. They built on the foundations laid by Kuyper and elaborated his social vision to develop a philosophy of the created order as a whole that would take full account of the totality of human experience. In this article I shall outline Vollenhoven’s philosophical development.

This article systematically describes the principle of sphere sovereignty according to Abraham Kuyper. Four themes are critically examined: the sovereignty of Christ as the main basis of Kuyper’s principle and its relation to creation, fall, and redemption; structural pluralism as the way of understanding social structure; the notion of religious and confessional pluralism; finally, the role of the state as the sphere of spheres. Abstract:
Abraham Kuyper was raised in a nineteenth century Dutch Reformed environment deeply influenced by the Enlightenment which concentrated civic power in the state which dominanted civic life, the church included. In response, Kuyper re-articulated the power of the institutional church to address the resultant ills perceived in church, state, and society. This dissertation analyzes the power of the institutional church in Kuyper's ecclesiology through an investigation of his primary works, historical cultural context, and comparison with other theologians and philosophers of ecclesial power. For Kuyper, the institutional church is structurally grounded in creation, emerging after the Fall as an institution of human society. It occupies an essential place as a sphere with its own direct accountability to Christ, independent from other spheres. The church exists bi-modally: as institution and organism. In both modes, the church is the bearer of the salt and light of the Gospel to the world. But the institutional church does not accomplish its task with the same means or power as other cultural institutions. It is a unique sphere of public life with a unique form of power. The unique power of the institutional church emerges from Kuyper's comprehensive Calvinist worldview . The power of the institutional church is its unique vocation, in vital union with Christ, to proclaim the comprehensive Word of God (through proclaimed Word, celebrated sacraments, discipleship, and diaconal acts of justice and mercy). This proclamation is oriented toward personal and public conversion, not directly through ecclesial cultural dominance but indirectly through public Christian witness. This analysis is then brought into critical dialogue with others to highlight and clarify it for application to the church today. It is argued that Kuyper's insight has not been fully received, that it is deeply resonant with Scripture, and that it remains rich with potential for the contemporary world.

Abstract:
Responding to the absence of readily available models in Australia for thinking about Christian higher education, this thesis investigates what might constitute its foundational principles and distinctive character. The thesis considers the Western Christian tradition, the history of the university, and the contemporary experience of Christian higher education in the United States to identify models for thinking about Christian higher education. It is argued that a central issue to be addressed in developing a distinctively Christian approach to scholarship is the relationship of faith and reason, an issue to which the Christian tradition offers a range of approaches. The question of faith and reason has a wider cultural significance since, it is argued, Western culture is fundamentally constituted by the relationship of Jerusalem and Athens, in which the inherent tensions do not obscure an ultimate commitment to the unity of truth. In contemporary debates over Christian higher education, the concept of faith-learning integration is a central issue. Given the variety of definitions and models proposed, the thesis considers the approaches which have been adopted in the Christian tradition. The approaches of Philo and the Church Fathers to classical learning are considered, with extended attention given to the 'faith seeking understanding' model attributed to St Augustine. Drawing upon Neoplatonism, Augustine's theory of illumination explained why true knowledge was dependent upon divine revelation. Augustine's approach also held that 'all truth is God's truth', and justified the appropriation of classical learning as analogous to the Hebrews 'spoiling Egypt' at the time of the Exodus. The Augustinian approach offers significant insight into the role of the will and the affections in knowing, and justifies belief as a reliance upon authority. While Augustine's is not the only model that might validly be termed 'Christian', and is not without its problems, it is a model which still has much to offer to Christian higher education today. The Augustinian approach has a profound historical significance since it established the epistemological framework for western Christendom throughout the middle ages. In responding to the criticism that the term 'Christian university' is an oxymoron, the thesis also considers aspects of the history of the medieval and Reformation universities, seeking to establish the extent to which it is possible for the university to be regarded as a Christian institution. It is argued that the university did not arise out of the rediscovery of Aristotelian philosophy, and that it is indeed possible to regard the university as a Christian institution for much of its history. The possibility of a Christian university today is thus not inconsistent with the history and institutional character of the university. The contributions to thinking about faith and learning and Christian higher education of Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Henry Newman are also discussed. One of the critical tasks of Christian higher education generally, and of a Christian university specifically, is the synthesis or integration of faith and learning, of which both Augustine and Thomas Aquinas were exemplars. It is argued however that, while the Thomistic approach can validly be termed 'Christian', it has been more successfully pursued in Catholic institutions than in their Protestant counterparts in which a central authority to regulate the boundaries of the domains of faith and reason is absent. A critical issue for Christian higher education today is that of secularising pressures, and thus the recent history of the secularisation of Christian higher education institutions in the United States is also considered. It is argued that the secularisation of these institutions was due particularly to the view of faith and learning which they had adopted. The study concludes that the 'worldview' approach advocated by Abraham Kuyper offers an approach to scholarship which is both resistant to secularisation, and consistent with the Christian tradition, particularly as expressed by Augustine and Calvin.

Choi, Miya. "Christian Piano Art Music: Its Theological Significance and Categorized Repertoire." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/3960.

Full text
Abstract:
"Christian piano art music" is a small genre, each piece of which belongs seemingly to either Christian music or art music, but by definition to both of them. In spite of its merits this genre has been ignored both by the concert hall because of its religiosity and by the church because of its artistry. However, since God is the One who has infinite creativity and is pleased with our various musical praises, both congregational praise and artistic musical praise has to be dedicated to Him. In chapters 2-5, after the history of music--Christian music, art music, and Christian art music--is examined from a biblical perspective of human history (Creation-the Fall-Redemption-Consummation), the significance of Christian art music is discussed, especially in light of God's common grace and special grace. After discussing the merits of instrumental praise, in chapters 6-9, the selected repertoire of Christian piano art music is introduced, being categorized into four groups--works using hymn or chorale tunes, works related to the Bible, works expressing Christian faith symbolically, and abstract piano works dedicated to God. Finally, the calling as "Christian culture makers" is discussed.
