Il progetto di ricerca, dal titolo Storia del monachesimo basiliano in Campania. Analisi del patrimonio fondiario di tre abbazie attraverso lo studio delle platee dei beni (secoli XVII-XVIII), è nato come una naturale continuazione di studio su un argomento trattato per la stesura della tesi di laurea magistrale, incentrata sulle vicende del cenobio basiliano di San Giovanni a Piro, situato nel basso Salernitano, nel Golfo di Policastro . Così, abbiamo reperito la maggior parte di documenti e informazioni su altri enti monastici italo-greci ubicati nelle vicinanze e ci si è chiesto se effettivamente esistesse un monachesimo basiliano di età moderna innestatosi e sviluppatosi in Campania, più precisamente nell’area meridionale del Principato Citra. Scorrendo la bibliografia sull’argomento i lavori più autorevoli e scientificamente rilevanti (Mario Scaduto, Il monachesimo basiliano nella Sicilia medievale; Biagio Cappelli, Il monachesimo basiliano ai confini calabro-lucani; Silvano Borsari, Il monachesimo bizantino nella Sicilia e nell’Italia prenormanne) sono stati incentrati sullo studio delle dinamiche del fenomeno in epoca medievale, relativi, per lo più, alle regioni dell’estremo meridione della nostra penisola: Sicilia, Calabria e Basilicata. L’obiettivo del lavoro è quello di spostare in avanti i termini del discorso, ossia analizzare gli «ambiti storico-geografici» da un nuovo punto di vista temporale e spaziale, in modo da proporre uno studio del monachesimo basiliano campano di età moderna. Le fonti principali scelte per l’indagine sono state le platee dei beni di tre monasteri, ognuno dei quali è usato come caso-campione di una microarea: la badia di Santa Maria di Pattano per il Cilento, il monastero di San Pietro al Tumusso di Montesano sulla Marcellana per il Vallo di Diano e il cenobio di San Giovanni a Piro per il Golfo di Policastro. Queste fonti documentarie – tutte più o meno coeve, essendo state redatte tra la fine del XVII e gli inizi del XVIII secolo – sono state utilizzate per delineare un profilo socio-economico non solo dei monasteri che le hanno prodotte, ma anche dei territori su cui tali enti sorgevano e avevano possedimenti fondiari. Abstract:
The thesis deals with the legal status of the qiȳan as slaves in Islam; describes their nationalities, education and training as singers, instrumentalists and versifiers. It considers their place in the cultural life of the host society. A substantial part of their poetry with particular attention to some of the leading figures is reproduced in translation. A review of that poetry is included, showing the bulk of it to consist of clever epigrams exchanged in public or semi-public maj̄alis, bearing the hallmark of virtuosity and social jousting or party games. Another theme is that the introduction of the qiȳan into the Abbasid cultural life led to the development of elegiac-erotic poetry. A parallel review of the musical scene, with special reference to some leading exponents, shows the influence of the qiȳan in the development of new “popular”, unconventional styles of singing. The institution of the qiȳan in all its artistic manifestations is viewed as essentially a business catering for men in pursuit of pleasure: caliphs, aristocrats and, most commonly, the class of cultured well-to-do chancery scribes. The bulk of the poetry which the established men poets composed in praise of the qiȳan is seen as publicity material, and substantially produced to commission. The effect of the qiȳan on the free-born women of their age, as well as historically, is considered; and some comparison is drawn between them as poets and singers. By way of further comparison the geisha and the hetaira of Ancient Greece are alluded to. A chapter is devoted to the decline and fall of the qiȳan institution in the East and its partial transfer to Arab Spain.

La ricerca svolta nel corso di questo dottorato riguarda la festa di origine iranica del nawrūz, così come essa si presentava di età islamica. È stato condotto uno spoglio sistematico delle fonti in lingua araba di età abbaside ( VIII-XI secolo) relative all'argomento, che ha permesso lo studio delle modalità di diffusione del nawrūz, dell'incidenza che esso ebbe nella politica ideologica califfale e sul funzionamento dell'erario. A ciò si aggiunge una migliore comprensione delle caratteristiche assunte dalle celebrazioni del nawrūz in ambito popolare.

Abstract:

This thesis establishes a link between conceptions of female virtue and the practice of veiling by women from ancient to medieval times in the Mediterranean region. This is evidenced by the consistent advocacy and prescription of veiling in ancient and medieval theological texts, including Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian, and Islamic texts. Veiling practices are shown to have a religious foundation, grounded in the ideas of honor and virtue. These notions were reflected in society over time with veiled aristocratic noblewomen and unveiled marginalized classes. While acknowledging class-based theories of female veiling, the thesis concentrates on the religious factors for veiling, particularly for medieval Muslim societies. The argument of this thesis is that while veiling did not originate in Islamic societies, Muslims validated the practice through their own literature and laws. The paper also includes evidence of female seclusion, which co-exists with the spread in the practice of veiling by women.

Ce travail envisage d'assembler l'ensemble des sources qui servent à l'histoire de l'abbaye Saint-Maixent. Les sources internes, qui étaient jadis conservées dans ce monastère, ont été détruites presque totalement en 1805, ce sont donc les transcriptions et les notes des érudits bénédictins qui nous servent de guide dans notre démarche. Les premières mentions sur la communauté proviennent de l'extérieur: les textes narratifs mérovingiens, les diplômes rédigés par la chancellerie carolingienne et les récits de transfert de reliques. Après le rétablissement du monastère en 924, nous observons encore 40 ans avant de voir l'activité de la rédaction qui se développe au cours du siècle suivant avec probablement la confection de la Vila de Maixent dans la version conservée. Cet essor d'écrit atteint son apogée au XIIe siècle avec la rédaction d'un recueil historique, la Chronique universelle, et la composition du cartulaire (en 1149 à notre avis) que nous reconstituons minutieusement.

Quand, en 1128, Charles le Bon est assassiné, la Flandre entre dans une longue querelle de succession qui va permettre au nouveau comte, Thierry d'Alsace, puîné de Lorraine, de s'illustrer sur la scène politique. L'intérêt qu'il montre pour la res monastica va faire de lui un atout non négligeable dans la quête de développement du nouvel ordre de Cîteaux. Bernard de Clairvaux met alors à profit ses relations fréquentes avec le comte pour fonder à Loos, en 1146, une nouvelle fille de son abbaye, dans le diocèse de Tournai nouvellement indépendant. En m'appuyant sur un corpus riche de documents, dépouillé et analysé au préalable, j'ai pu dégager cinq principaux domaines de recherche. Débarrasser, dans un premier temps, l'abbaye de toutes les fantaisies dont l'avaient ornée les historiographes et reconstituer le contexte de la fondation. Etablir, dans un second temps, l'espace structurel du monastère. Enfin, en trois parties distinctes, analyser les grands aspects de la vie monastique : la vie communautaire - passage de la vie séculière à la vie conventuelle, rôle et statut de chacun, conformité à la législation cistercienne - , le monde des convers - vie des granges, agriculture et principes d'écoulement des denrées ainsi produites-, l'implication dans le monde de ces moines pourtant cloîtrés - amis et bienfaiteurs, relations interreligieuses d'entente et de confrontation. La publication du chartrier du XIIème siècle, celle de deux chroniques, des notices concernant chaque grange et chaque abbé, puis quelques généalogies des principales familles impliquées dans la fondation font l'objet des annexes
In 1128, following the assassination of Charles le Bon, Flanders entered into a long dispute over succession which was to allow the new Count, Thierry of Alsace, the younger of Lorraine, to win fame on the political stage. The interest which he brought to res monastica was to make him a valuable asset in the quest for the development of the new order of Cîteaux. Bernard de Clairvaux made the most of his frequent dealings with the Count to found in Loos in 1146 a new branch of his abbey in the newly independent diocese of Tournai. Basing my study on a rich corpus of documents, suitably sorted and analysed beforehand, I have been able to extract five main areas of research. Firstly, to dispense with the fantasies surrounding the abbey which former historians had embellished and reconstruct the real context of its foundation. Secondly, establish the stuctural basis of the abbey. Lastly, in three distinct parts, analyse the main traits of monastic life. 1. Community life - the passage from secular to convent life, the role and status of each and everyone, conformity to Cistercien law, 2. Lay society - barn life, agriculture and the production and distribution of produce, 3. The involvement in society of monks in spite of their cloistered existence - friends and benefactors, made up of interreligious agreements and confrontation. The publication of the XII century charter, that of two chronicles, notices pertaining to each barn and each abbot, along with ancestry of the main families involved in the foundation can be found in the appendices

À l'époque médiévale, les cadis se trouvent à la croisée de deux mondes : celui des institutions étatiques et celui des juristes privés. Cette thèse tente d'analyser les rapports entre les cadis d'Iraq et le pouvoir entre la révolution ‘abbâside en 132/750 et l'arrivée des Bûyides en 334/945. Nous nous interrogeons dans un premier temps sur le lien de délégation qui unit les cadis aux gouverneurs, puis aux califes, en essayant de voir dans quelle mesure la nouvelle dynastie réforme l'administration judiciaire, et quels sont les critères qui président au choix des cadis. L'étude des districts judiciaires conduit par ailleurs à se demander dans quelle mesure la justice des cadis couvre l'ensemble du territoire iraqien, et à analyser les structures hiérarchiques qui les relient au pouvoir central. Certaines déficiences constatées sont compensées par l'élaboration de procédures destinées à assurer une continuité géographique et temporelle de la judicature. Le rôle de Bagdad, qui s'affirme peu à peu comme le centre nerveux du système judicaire iraqien, est également analysé. Nous étudions enfin les relations quotidiennes entre la judicature et le pouvoir, et tentons de voir dans quelle mesure les cadis sont instrumentalisés par leurs délégants à des fins politiques. Face à aux interventions du pouvoir dans le domaine judiciaire, de plus en plus considérées comme illégitimes, la réflexion des cadis et des autres savants conduit à modifier sensiblement le statut du cadi au sein de la société
During the medieval period, the qâdîs are situated between two worlds: that of state institutions and that of private lawyers. This thesis seeks to analyze relationships between the Iraqi qâdîs and state power between the ‘abbâsid revolution in 132/750 and the establishment of the bûyid dynasty in 334/945. We first consider the structure of delegated power that links the qâdîs with the governors, then to the caliphs; we then attempt to establish the degree to which the new dynasty reforms the judicial administration, and examine the criteria that govern the choice of the qâdîs. Having considered the Iraqi judicial districts, we turn to consider the extent to which the juridical authority of the qâdîs covers all the Iraqi territory, and analyze the hierarchical structures that connect them to the central organization of power. Certain deficiencies are shown to be compensated by the elaboration of procedures intended to ensure their geographical and temporal continuity. As Baghdad progressively affirms itself as the nervous center of the Iraqi judicial system, its role in these processes is also analyzed. Finally, we explore the daily relationship between the judicature and power, and attempt to discover the means by which the qâdîs may be used by their délégants for political purposes. Given the intervention of political power in the judicial field, which are increasingly perceived to be illegitimate, the thought of the qâdîs and other scholars lead to an important re-consideration of the qâdî's status in society

Abstract:
Lo studio si tratta di mettere in evidenza il cambiamento che ha subito il termine Oriente nel secolo XX in alcuni testi della letteratura italiana contemporanea. L’opera di Edward Said, L’Orientalismo è un testo di riferimento per i nostri studi. Nel quale abbiamo focalizzato l’attenzione su alcuni aspetti salienti: il concetto di orientalismo; l’interesse nei confronti dell’Oriente sul piano politico, scientifico, letterario; l’impossibilità di separare lo studioso dalle circostanze biografiche e sociali. Siamo riusciti, quindi, a stabilire che il cambiamento dell’immagine orientale dipende da tre fattori: lo scrittore (emittente), il soggetto (la fonte) ed il lettore (destinatario), dai quali si origina l’oggetto (il testo). Basandoci su questi tre elementi abbiamo cercato di inquadrare l’interesse letterario per l’Oriente vista da una triplice prospettiva: imperialismo, fascino ed erotismo. Per studiare le prime due prospettive, abbiamo scelto due opere. La prima presenta l’immagine dell’imperialismo, si tratta di Sanya, La moglie egiziana e il Romanzo dell’Oriente Moderno (1927) di Bruno Corra. La seconda prospettiva dove troviamo l’immagine dell’Oriente fascinoso è nello scritto di Annie Vivanti, La terra di Cleopatra (1925). Il punto centrale della tesi si tratta di studiare Annie Messina (1910-1996), è una scrittrice che ha uno stile peculiare ed un approccio tutto suo al tema dell’Oriente. I testi studiati sono : "Il mirto e la rosa" (1982), "Il banchetto dell'emiro" (1997) e "La principessa e il wâlî" (1996), tutti pubblicati dalla casa editrice Sellerio.L’unico pubblicato da Mondadori è "La palma di Rusafa" (1989). L’ultima parte del lavoro abbiamo esposto un profilo storico e socio-religioso della letteratura erotica araba. In cui abbiamo rintracciato le origini dell’immagine erotico dell’Oriente e il tema dell’omosessualità, mettendo a confronto il testo omosessuale di Messina con la letteratura italiana contemporanea.
Orientalism between imperialist vocation, exotic suggestions and homoerotic. The historical representations of the passage between the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. What we want to affront in the thesis is from one part the change that has undergone the term orient in the twentieth century in some texts of contemporary Italian literature, from which originate the reflections that has determined the path for our work. The line we traced is primarily a pattern of general reading of travel literature and texts that have treated the orient , noting that the figure was an exotic oriental rich source of inspiration for writers, that reinforced them with creativity. In most cases, therefore ,the Orient has been the subject of literary production, however, it took different forms depending on the circumstances and the individual and collective needs. Despite the fact that oriental style was diffused in contemporary Italian literature, we found it difficult to have unique materials for our study. Finally, we have chosen a writer who has a peculiar style and approach of its own to the topic of the orient. She is Annie Messina (1910-1996), the granddaughter of the author Maria Messina. She made Arabic medieval ambience of tragic stories of love and passion, predominantly homosexual love. As a writer, she is little known and has not been widely studied by critics. Lo studio si tratta di mettere in evidenza il cambiamento che ha subito il termine Oriente nel secolo XX in alcuni testi della letteratura italiana contemporanea. L’opera di Edward Said, L’Orientalismo è un testo di riferimento per i nostri studi. Nel quale abbiamo focalizzato l’attenzione su alcuni aspetti salienti: il concetto di orientalismo; l’interesse nei confronti dell’Oriente sul piano politico, scientifico, letterario; l’impossibilità di separare lo studioso dalle circostanze biografiche e sociali. Siamo riusciti, quindi, a stabilire che il cambiamento dell’immagine orientale dipende da tre fattori: lo scrittore (emittente), il soggetto (la fonte) ed il lettore (destinatario), dai quali si origina l’oggetto (il testo). Basandoci su questi tre elementi abbiamo cercato di inquadrare l’interesse letterario per l’Oriente vista da una triplice prospettiva: imperialismo, fascino ed erotismo. Per studiare le prime due prospettive, abbiamo scelto due opere. La prima presenta l’immagine dell’imperialismo, si tratta di Sanya, La moglie egiziana e il Romanzo dell’Oriente Moderno (1927) di Bruno Corra. La seconda prospettiva dove troviamo l’immagine dell’Oriente fascinoso è nello scritto di Annie Vivanti, La terra di Cleopatra (1925). Il punto centrale della tesi si tratta di studiare Annie Messina (1910-1996), è una scrittrice che ha uno stile peculiare ed un approccio tutto suo al tema dell’Oriente. I testi studiati sono : "Il mirto e la rosa" (1982), "Il banchetto dell'emiro" (1997) e "La principessa e il wâlî" (1996), tutti pubblicati dalla casa editrice Sellerio.L’unico pubblicato da Mondadori è "La palma di Rusafa" (1989). L’ultima parte del lavoro abbiamo esposto un profilo storico e socio-religioso della letteratura erotica araba. In cui abbiamo rintracciato le origini dell’immagine erotico dell’Oriente e il tema dell’omosessualità, mettendo a confronto il testo omosessuale di Messina con la letteratura italiana contemporanea.
Orientalism between imperialist vocation, exotic suggestions and homoerotic. The historical representations of the passage between the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. What we want to affront in the thesis is from one part the change that has undergone the term orient in the twentieth century in some texts of contemporary Italian literature, from which originate the reflections that has determined the path for our work. The line we traced is primarily a pattern of general reading of travel literature and texts that have treated the orient , noting that the figure was an exotic oriental rich source of inspiration for writers, that reinforced them with creativity. In most cases, therefore ,the Orient has been the subject of literary production, however, it took different forms depending on the circumstances and the individual and collective needs. Despite the fact that oriental style was diffused in contemporary Italian literature, we found it difficult to have unique materials for our study. Finally, we have chosen a writer who has a peculiar style and approach of its own to the topic of the orient. She is Annie Messina (1910-1996), the granddaughter of the author Maria Messina. She made Arabic medieval ambience of tragic stories of love and passion, predominantly homosexual love. As a writer, she is little known and has not been widely studied by critics. The purpose of this study was the complete and detailed description of all the materials (parchments manuscripts, documents and fragments), dated between the 12th and the 13th centuries, through census and cataloging of the historical records preserved at the Biblioteca Nazionale at the Montevergine Abbey and at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. An important chapter in the history of the Abbey concerns the book decoration, a little studied subject, unlike the pictorial and sculptural productions. The global analysis (codicological, paleographical, textual and of the history of art), combined with the analysis of the archive materials and the indirect records, has allowed us to rebuild a corpus of the decorative codes linked to the Montevergine Abbey, as well as to propose new critical acquisitions. Searching for parchment images has led us to wonder about the presence of the scriptorium; a complex reality in the Virginian world that does not fully attest to the production of books. The analysis of illustrated documents known as ‘Statuto dell’abate Donato', a sure Virginian production, was of great interest and led to a new interpretation. [edited by author]

Dans le premier volume, cinq chapitres présentent cette édition. Le premier chapitre dresse l'histoire de l'abbaye d'Aulps. Ce monastère fut fondé à la fin du XIe siècle à 800 mètres d'altitude dans le diocèse de Genève et fut affilié à l'ordre cistercien en 1136. Le deuxième chapitre détaille la méthode utilisée pour reconstituer le chartrier disparu (mentions dorsales inventaires, travaux d'érudits. . . ). Une troisième partie est consacrée à l'économie de l'abbaye et particulièrement à son rôle dans la mise en valeur de la montagne. Les pouvoirs de l'abbé et le gouvernement du monastère constituent le thème du quatrième chapitre. This thesis is divided into three sections: an introductory volume and two further volumes of primary evidence with analysis, the first encompassing the period 1097 -1252, the second from 1252-1307, representing 662 acts in total. The introduction contains five chapters. The first chapter details the history of Aulps Abbey. The monastery was founded at the end of the 11th century at 800 metres in the diocese of Geneva and was affiliated to the Cistercian Order in 1136. The second chapter presents the methodology employed to reconstitute the lost monastic archive (archiver's notes, inventories, historical scholarly work. . . ) The third chapter is dedicated to the abbey's economic life and particularly to its role in exploiting the mountains as a resource. The abbot's powers and those of the monastery's other monks with decision-making powers are taken up in the fourth chapter. Entre la fin du Moyen Âge et la Révolution, l'histoire de l'abbaye de Saintes, deuxième communauté féminine de France par ses revenus, grand seigneur de sa province, s'avère incontournable tant pour la connaissance des communautés religieuses que celle de la Saintonge. Avoir recours aux actes notariaux et à toutes les sources externes disponibles permet de pallier la destruction des archives du monastère à la Révolution pour en établir une histoire globale.Le pouvoir royal ne parvient à y imposer la nomination des abbesses qu'en 1544, laissant se mettre en place une longue dynastie de supérieures de lignages du Sud-ouest. Après l'échec, en 1511 et 1530, de deux réformes de la communauté imposées par les autorités civiles, suite à une longue préparation dès le XVIe siècle, Françoise II de Foix, réussit durablement à mettre fin à des abus remontant au Moyen Âge. Rapportés par un journal janséniste, les épisodes mystiques extrêmes vécus par les moniales (1777-1787) défraient la chronique. Révélant l'isolement spirituel d'une communauté contemplative à l'époque des Lumières, ils sont riches de sens pour la connaissance de l'existence de pratiques surannées et de l'évolution des mentalités. C'est l'occasion pour l'évêque et la noblesse locale d'un projet de remplacement de l'abbaye par un chapitre de chanoinesses. Si des filles de parlementaires puis de négociants entrèrent à l'abbaye respectivement aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, la vieille noblesse du Centre-ouest domina constamment l'effectif. La prise d'habit doit être située dans le cadre de stratégies familiales et servait à marquer une ascension sociale lignagère. Toute-puissance des abbesses, moniales vivant dans un relatif confort, la lecture tenant une grande place. Faisant preuve de ferveur, l'abbaye reçoit les courants spirituels successifs. A la Renaissance, elle protège des humanistes. Au XVIIe siècle, elle adhère de manière passionnée au jansénisme puis suit la voie du rigorisme avant de choisir une direction jésuite. Le monastère conserve son patrimoine à l'issue de nombreux procès. Il mène une politique de charité limitée eu égard à ses revenus mais s'avérant efficace. S'appuyant sur des receveurs ou des fermiers bien renseignées et ambitieux, il met en valeur efficacement ses biens, développant les brûleries à Oléron et faisant précocement assécher des marais en Poitou au prix de conflits. Les fermiers, souvent des proches des abbesses, connaissent une ascension qui les amènera à occuper les principales fonctions politiques après la Révolution, établissant ainsi une continuité inattendue entre Ancien et Nouveau Régime.

Ce travail s'intéresse aux conceptions de l'histoire et à leur réalisation narrative dans l'historiographie arabe de l'époque ÞabbÁside. D'abord, sont étudiés les entrecroisements, au niveau structural, entre récits historique et fictionnel, et les caractéristiques par lesquelles ils se distinguent. Pour cette étude, est tenu compte, parmi d'autres, des résultats de l'analyse structurale du discours ainsi que des considérations de P. RICŒUR à propos de la notion de mimèsis. Suivant ces considérations théoriques, ce travail montre, à travers les représentations des califes al-WalÍd b. YazÍd (743-744) et al-AmÍn (809-813) dans l'historiographie arabe médiévale, comment les récits à propos d'événements isolés (a¿bÁr) sont liés à un niveau paradigmatique qui donne à ces représentations le caractère d'un tout, étant l'expression d'une conception de l'histoire. Dans un deuxième temps, l'analyse traite l'arrangement narratif d'a¿bÁr isolés et essaie de répondre à la question de savoir en quelle mesure l'historiographe se sent autorisée à donner une forme narrative à une suite transmise d'événements. A côté de la structure purement narrative des textes, la référence à un autre niveau du texte ou à un autre élément du récit est d'intérêt. Ce sont donc de la narrativité et la référencialité des textes qui montrent que les récits historiques ne sont pas la simple reproduction d'une suite donnée d'événements du passé, mais que l'historien donne aux événements une signification particulière. Cependant, l'historien présuppose que le lecteur de son ouvrage accepte l'idée que cette signification n'est pas apportée aux événements par l'historien, mais qu'elle leur est inhérente. Combinées avec les études de W. ISER sur la fonction du réel, du fictif et de l'imaginaire, ces considérations permettent la déduction qu'on entre en lecture d'un ouvrage historique en acceptant l'idée que c'est le monde réel qui contient par lui-même le renvoi à l'imaginaire
The present study deals with conceptions of history and their narrative realisation in the Arabic historiography of ÞAbbÁsid times. First, the structural intersections of historical and fictional narration and their distinctive characteristics are analysed. For the purposes of this study, the results of structural discourse analysis (R. BARTHES) are considered and combined with P. RICŒUR's studies of the functions of mimesis. Following these theoretical considerations and using the representations of the caliphs al-WalÍd b. YazÍd (743-744) and al-AmÍn (809-813) in Arabic medieval historiography, the study demonstrates how the narratives of single events (a¿bÁr) are linked to a paradigmatic level turning these representations into a complete expression of a conception of history. In the second part, the study treats the narrative arrangement of single a¿bÁr and seeks to answer to which degree the historiographer feels authorized to give a narrative form to a transmitted set of events. Next to the purely narrative structures, references to other textual levels or to other story elements are of particular interest. Like narrativity, the referenciality of the texts proves that historical narrations are not a mere reproduction of a given set of past events, but that the historian also provides the events with meaning. The historian presumes, however, that the reader of his work interprets this meaning as inherent to the events rather than as the historian's construction. Linked with the studies of W. ISER on the function of the real, the fictive and the imaginary and on the reader's contract with the author, one can deduce from these considerations that the reader of a historical work does not consider the world described by the historian to be a possible world, but to be the real world, containing by itself the reference to the imaginary

Par le biais d’une étude de cas, notre objectif est donc d’identifier et expliquer les formes, fonctions et usages des écrits documentaires chez les cisterciennes du Val-Benoît de Liège, du XIIIe au XVe siècle. En replaçant l’institution dans son contexte tant liégeois que cistercien, et en analysant son riche fonds d’archives (environ 700 chartes & 200 registres), cette recherche illustre le passage d’un écrit essentiellement juridique au XIIIe siècle au développement d’écrits de gestion et à l’élaboration d’un véritable système comptable au cours des XIVe et du XVe siècles
Though studies on medieval literacy have flourished since the late 20th century, highlighting a “writing revolution” and helping understand entire parts of medieval societies, pragmatic literacy remains rather uncharted territory in monastic - and especially female - communities. Through this case study, our goal will therefore be identifying and explaining writing practices in the Liege Val-Benoît Abbey (for forms, functions and uses), between the 13th and 15th centuries. By looking at the institutionin its context (both regional and Cistercian) and analysing its dense archive (appx. 700 charters & 200 registries), this research work depicts the transition from 13th century juridical writing to a progressively more advanced paper-based accounting system in the 14th and the 15th century
