Abstract:
The research deals with the pictorial language and the landscape paintings of the Brazilian artist Mario Zanini (1907-1971), and the connections with his private Library, constituted between 1930 and 1970, and later donated by his family to MAC USP, along with his artworks. The study traces the parallels between his artworks and his pictorial language, through three books of his Library (Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh and André Lhote). The study is also based on the analysis of the art critics Walter Zanini and Alice Brill. Nevertheless, the total set of 226 books of his personal Library and their identifications are listed at the end of the thesis, sorted by date of publication.

Abstract:
The advent of the internet has revolutionized the way scientists communicate their research results increasing the power to disseminate and to access scientific production. This fact was responsible to restructure the scientific information flow that has incorporated its own characteristics from the digital culture. The Open Archives Initiative constituted the infrastructure that supports this restructuring. It was also responsible for the institutionalization of a model called e-prints repositories (ER), that stores, disseminates and promotes scientific production, published or not, in a place managed by the scientific community itself, that allows the inclusion of their public commmentaries about contents of that production. The hypothesis of this work suggests that the adherence to this model by the scientific communities depends on the level of understanding and acceptance, of the profile of the field interfering with the adoption of the innovation and its legitimation. Through a case study of Brazilian researchers from the Communication Sciences field it had been carried out the electronic focus group technique among 18 researchers, whose profile was formed by researches leaders registered at CNPq with backgroung in the field. The exploratory study identified many questions present in the dynamics of scientific communication of the field leading to proof of the hypothesis. From among results, distinguish low perception of that this model optimized the scientific information flow and strong tendency to not accept the model becauce of field profile. In conclusion, the level of adherence to the model is inserted in a medium to low scale.

Askew, Consuella Antoinette. "An Examination of Lotka’s law in the Field of Library and Information Studies." FIU Digital Commons, 2008. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/182.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to test Lotka’s law of scientific publication productivity using the methodology outlined by Pao (1985), in the field of Library and Information Studies (LIS). Lotka’s law has been sporadically tested in the field over the past 30+ years, but the results of these studies are inconclusive due to the varying methods employed by the researchers. A data set of 1,856 citations that were found using the ISI Web of Knowledge databases were studied. The values of n and c were calculated to be 2.1 and 0.6418 (64.18%) respectively. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) one sample goodness-of-fit test was conducted at the 0.10 level of significance. The Dmax value is 0.022758 and the calculated critical value is 0.026562. It was determined that the null hypothesis stating that there is no difference in the observed distribution of publications and the distribution obtained using Lotka’s and Pao’s procedure could not be rejected. This study finds that literature in the field of library and Information Studies does conform to Lotka’s law with reliable results. As result, Lotka’s law can be used in LIS as a standardized means of measuring author publication productivity which will lead to findings that are comparable on many levels (e.g., department, institution, national). Lotka’s law can be employed as an empirically proven analytical tool to establish publication productivity benchmarks for faculty and faculty librarians. Recommendations for further study include (a) exploring the characteristics of the high and low producers; (b) finding a way to successfully account for collaborative contributions in the formula; and, (c) a detailed study of institutional policies concerning publication productivity and its impact on the appointment, tenure and promotion process of academic librarians.

Abstract:
We propose that emerging collaboration, or groupware, technology that supports synchronous interaction among students and faculty can add new aspects to the traditional distance learning and university course models. To explore this assumption we taught a masters' level university course using collaboration technology. In our approach, collaboration technology (integrated synchronous audio- and video-conferencing, electronic whiteboard and shared application tools) was used to provide students at universities in different countries opportunities to participate in interactive class exercises and discussions, and to do class assignments together. Students also participated in traditional, face-to-face class seminars, discussions and exercises at their local university. Thus students learned using collaboration technology and traditional methods. In this paper we describe the course and discuss students' evaluations of the course, their collaboration with each other, and collaboration technology used during the course. Students evaluated the course and their collaborative experiences very highly but reported unique challenges and had mixed impressions with respect to the technology. Challenges included establishing interpersonal communication and meeting commitments. In general, students judged collaboration technology lower than e-mail and telephony in characteristics such as social presence, participation and ease of use. However, there were differences in evaluations among students in Chapel Hill and Oulu implying cultural preferences. In addition, students reported varying degrees of productivity and variety of tasks afforded the technology. These differences were similar for students in Chapel Hill and Oulu, implying individual preferences influenced evaluation of the technology. These results appear to imply that students need to learn principles of collaboration in addition to the technology for collaborative learning across distances to occur, and that a variety of technologies are needed to accommodate cultural and individual differences among students.

Abstract:
The academic field of political science in Europe is studied in this thesis which examines the application of bibliometrics for domain analysis. It takes its point of departure in the domain analytic approach outlined by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen, which claims the study of domains as central for information specialists to be able to identify information needs in their fields of practice. Three features of the domain were studied by the use of bibliometric methods. Data was extracted from the Web of Science. Impact Factor was used to select 50 journals from each of the years 1999, 2004 and 2009. Only items published by authors with European addresses were included. Co-word analysis was used to study topics within the discipline and several kinds of citation analyses were conducted to examine citation patterns of the domain. Lastly core journals, authors and works were identified by the use of citation analysis and co-citation maps were drawn for the analyses.Several subfields within the domain, as well as some differences in citation patterns of the subfields, were possible to distinguish. The domain showed to be multifaceted, yet specific European research areas were identified. Some significant changes of the citation patterns were apparent between 1999 and 2009. In 2009 there were more references per article, journal articles were cited to a higher degree, relatively older publications were cited to a greater extent and the most cited journals received a larger share of the total amount of citations. The existence of a specific European domain within political science is discussed as well as the diverse characteristics of the subfields and their implications for the bibliometric methods. Finally suggestions are presented of how bibliometrics can be used for domain analysis within library and information science as well as by information service institutions. This paper is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Abstract:
The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course. Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian. Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally. The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance. The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

Abstract:
Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants provided data via semistructured interviews, field observations, follow-up interviews, other documentation, and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with open and axial coding techniques to identify themes, which were then crosschecked and triangulated with observation and follow-up interview data. Findings revealed communication issues, a fundamental misconception in training, and a false assumption that all personnel easily acquire computer literacy. Benefits gained from this study should assist maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) organizations within the Department of Defense to improve current and future technology implementation as the research underscores real-life issues from a comparable organization. The implications for positive social change provide a greater understanding of technology-enabled change and contribute to the development of best practices for technology initiatives that address common ST issues in the MRO workplace.

Abstract:
For centuries books, text, and literature could not be seperated from each other. Documents were distinctly delimited entities. In times of bitstream, World Wide Web, e-books, and digital text corpora the boundaries of documents as well as the concept of document ifself have become vague. Referring to literary texts as examples the thesis analyzes challenges and opportunities in current digital environments. The technical and conceptional developments of the last decades led to changing methods in humanities, publishing houses, and libraries. Libraries, once institutions which archived and provided books and therefore material objects, have to redefine their role and task in a digital world.

Abstract:
In order to determine the core group of journals to consider in developing the Library's collection of IAR, a bibliometric study about the use and production of scientific literature by researchers of the institution to which the library belongs is performed. From the analysis of references to papers published by researchers the obsolescence and usefulness of the literature are determined. By extracting keywords and authors the research fronts and the research groups working on these fronts are also determined, using the methods of analysis of co-occurrence of words, coauthorship and social network analysis. The results show a low obsolescence to the literature, a high preference for use and publish in two or three titles of journals in the discipline, and finally show the existence of two fronts of research within the institution.

Abstract:
In this work, the condition and the way automatization is used in University Libraries in Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos are described. The integration of technological resources in the information units is an essential means for improving services, contributing to the creation of new jobs and enhancing decision-making. It is also an agent for bringing about changes in the information services which are provided by University Libraries. It is a descriptive study using the qualitative method, whose means for data collection is telephone contact, self-administered questionnaires and direct observations. The main conclusion shows a disparity regarding technological structures, human resources and poor involvement of staff in planning and management. Libraries with their collections, the important number of transactions handled and the chronic insufficiency of staff are the key areas where the application of informatics could produce more satisfactory results.

Abstract:
The main goal of the present research is to outline the theoretical and practical components that should be present in the construction of a conceptualization of the Librarian Social Responsability (LSR), in order to generally join it up to the area of libraries management. The pattern followed in this process has been taken from the statements given by the companies that works with the development of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The study group is formed by the two public libraries that are nowadays functioning in Provincia Cordillera- Región Metropolitana. It is concluded that the LSR concept is not recognized as a determined element inside the duties of these units; and, there is not only a lack of awareness about the topic in both polled institutions, but besides, clear evidences of development inside the oficial levels and organizations that belong to the national library community are not found. For this purpose a sort of mixed survey (open-ended and close ended questions) was applied that allowed us to recognize the uses through which in an implicit way the LSR concept is being used in the management of the public libraries in study.

Abstract:
In the context of knowledge management (KM) in the field of digital libraries (DL), communities of practice (CoPs) is one of the unexplored areas of interests for research, as compared with those in the fields of business and management, education, engineering and medical sciences. Greater importance is being placed on those communities on their ability to share knowledge, facilitate knowledge transfer and most importantly in providing the proper context for learning to take place. Thus, this research sought to: (1) find out the defining characteristics of CoPs in the field of DL, (2) examine on how CoPs‘ contribute to the development of a learning culture and (3) determine the success and hindering factors in the development of such learning culture. This study was grounded on an interpretivist philosophical view. Hence, the methodological approach of this study was qualitative in nature in which experiential or context-based data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Research sampling was limited to professionals who are actively involved in DL communities. These include DL designers, system developers, system administrators, librarians, academicians in DL educational programmes, graduate students and scholars having common interests in DL and its enabling technologies. The gathered data were analyzed based on Peterson et al.‘s five steps thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that DL CoPs take a variety of forms, has no definite structure and their creation is always dependent on the purposes for which they are established. Furthermore, results indicated that there is a strong culture of learning among DL professionals which is characterized by the four distinct cultures of practices – knowledge sharing culture, culture of collaboration, knowledge transfer culture and the culture of innovation. However, there are also critical success factors in creating a culture of learning as follows: human behaviour, organizational and technological factors. In contrast, the hindering factors or barriers include: attitude towards knowledge sharing, culture-related barriers or challenges, language limitation, and time.

Abstract:
Digital preservation is currently a very important field of research because the amount of available digital information is rapidly increasing. However, this information is forgotten just as rapidly as the underlying technology changes and becomes obsolete, at an ever increasing speed. There are two different approaches to solve this problem: Migration and Emulation. Both have their pros and cons. The complexity of todays operating environments is huge and one requires a variety of applications and software components in order to display a given digital object correctly. This makes both emulation and migration a sophisticated and expensive process. In this work, methods are introduced which allow for the automatic creation of a run-time environment for given digital objects. This means that the installation of various programs is automated. Further, various guidelines to maintain plattform independence are examined and applied.

Abstract:
During the last two decades, mainly due to the huge increase of digital information accessible through Internet, user training by Higher Education (HE) libraries evolved from library instruction to elaborate information handling skills connected with student courses. Information Literacy (IL) has been defined as the set of capacities enabling an individual to understand when he needs information and has the skills to find, evaluate and exploit it effectively and ethically having learned how to learn. An international literature review demonstrated that IL instruction developments have being mainly taking place in HE libraries. Because IL instruction is a rather new development in Greek HE and relative research is limited, a survey including three questionnaires was performed with a main aim to describe how IL library instruction programmes are currently designed and delivered in Greek HE institutions which comprise 23 Universities and 16 Technological Educational Institutes (TEIs). Results from HE libraries showed that user instruction was offered by 77% of Greek HE institutions, while there were no course-integrated programmes or IL institutional policies. HE libraries employed various instruction techniques mainly targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students. Most libraries offered instructional programmes comprising basic library skills, while on average less than half of them included training on more advanced IL skills. In general IL instruction methods and content between University and TEI libraries were found to be similar. Instruction programmes were designed and delivered almost exclusively by librarians, usually not following any international IL standards, while in some Universities there was occasional faculty-librarian collaboration. Finally, Greek HE librarians considered that, although IL programmes are in their early stage of development, library instruction had a positive effect on the way students were handling information and listed course-integration and faculty-librarian collaboration as the best ways for the future development of IL programmes in Greek HE institutions.

The Emulation strategy in digital preservation tackles the obsolescence of hardware, software and data formats by restoring the original usage environment of digital objects via emulation techniques. This means that supporting objects, such as operating systems or applications, have to be stored in a software archive. This thesis deals with the design of such an archive. First, some previous research results are outlined, with focus on the different types of supporting objects, and a concept called "View Path". Based on that, the responsibilities of a software archive are shown. These are the archiving of view path components, and the maintenance of emulated environments for visualization or migration of archived objects. Further, two major concepts for fulfilling these requirements are discussed, the dynamic generation and static archiving of emulated environments. The thesis concludes with the presentation of a prototypical architecture, based on Java EE. This architecture allows access to the archive by a web browser, a java applet provides access to the emulated environments.

Develops a state of the art on the analysis of research and theoretical reflections that have been developed in information ethics and their influences on the theoretical evolution of ethics in Library and Information Sciences. For this, the main bibliographic sources on these two categories (information ethics and ethics in Library and Information Sciences) were reviewed, under the qualitative method, descriptive and documentary analysis of contemporary studies. Likewise, the main theories / paradigms developed by the most prominent authors on the subject, such as Luciano Floridi, were analyzed. By way of conclusion, it was determined that information ethics has a close relationship in the development of ethics in Library and Information Sciences because the first provides the philosophical foundations, concepts such as infosphere and moral/informational agents are part of the construction of ethical values and, furthermore, it is the space where the ethical dilemmas that determine the library professional are presented. It is recommended to encourage research on this subject, since there is a worrying literary shortage.

Abstract:
Background. In most academic disciplines journals play an important role in disseminating findings of research among the disciplinary community members. Understanding a discipline's body of journals is therefore of grave importance when looking for previous research, compiling an overview of previous research and and in order to make a decision regarding the best place for publishing research results. Furthermore, based on Bradford's Law of scattering, one can assume that in order to be able to compile a satisfying overview of previous research a wide range of journals has to be scanned, but also that there are some 'core' journals which are of more importance to specific disciplines than others. Aim. This thesis aims to compile a comprehensive master list of journals which publish articles of relevance to Library and Information Science (LIS). A method to rank journals by their importance is introduced and some key characteristics of the disciplines body of journals are discussed. Databases indexing the disciplines journals are also compared. Method. The master list of LIS journals was created by combining the journal listings of secondary sources indexing the field's literature. These sources were six databases focusing on LIS literature: INFODATA, Current Contents, Library and Information Science Abstracts, Library Information Science Technology Abstracts, Information Science and Technology Abstracts, and Library Literature and Information Science, the LIS subsection in three databases with a general focus: Social Science Citation Index, Academic Search Premier, and Expanded Academic ASAP, and the listing of LIS journals from the Elektronische Zeitschriften Bibliothek. Problems related to editorial policies and technical shortcomings are discussed, before comparing: predominant publication languages, places of publication, open access, peer review, and the ISI Journal Impact Factors (JIF). Journals were also ranked by the number of occurrences in multiple databases in order to identify 'core' publications. The number of journals overlapping between databases are estimated and a matrix giving the overlap is visualized using multi dimensional scaling. Lastly, the degree of journals overlapping with other disciplines is measured. Results. A comprehensive master list of 1,205 journals publishing articles of relevance to LIS was compiled. The 968 active journals are mostly published in English, with one third of the journals coming from the US and another third from the UK and Germany. Nearly 16% of all journals are open access, 11% have a ISIJIF, and 42% are peer reviewed. Fifteen core journal could be identified and a list of the top fourteen journals published in Germany is introduced. Databases have between five to 318 journals in common and the journal collection shows an substantial overlap with a wide range of subjects, with the biggest journal overlap with Computing Studies, and Business and Economics. Conclusion. The aim of compiling a comprehensive list of LIS journal was achieved. The list will contribute to our understanding of scholarly communication within the LIS discipline and provide academics and practitioners with a better understanding of journals within the discipline. The ranking approach proved to be sufficient, showing good similarity with other studies over the last 40 years. The master list of LIS journals has also potential use to further research.

Abstract:
This research enters into the disciplinary discussion another proposal to observe the librarian, and particularly his identity. Permeating with this the access of subjectivity to library studies and integrating the ability of the subject to influence the processes of conformation of social space. Under this scenario, the question arises: How has the identity of the librarian been shaped in the library field in Mexico? In order to seek to answer this question, the elements that make it up have had to be defined, namely: the library field in Mexico, the librarian and identity, which have also served to structure the chapters that make up this thesis and that intertwine organically. with the theoretical-conceptual framework of this research. Consequently, the research objective is to reflect on the identity of the librarian in the library field in Mexico. Understanding reflexivity as the action of going back on itself to critically examine its conformation, but also the effect that the identity of the librarian has had on the constitution of the field itself. This is part of a strategy of construction and understanding of the phenomenon itself. The hypothesis that derives from this is that identity is constituted in a dialectical relationship between objective reality and subjective reality, or between the librarian field and the librarian. So there is not one but a variety of possible identities that are outlined in the dialogue between the subject and the field. Thus the formation and maintenance of identity, or rather, identities are determined by the social structure, reciprocally, the social structure is maintained, modified or reformed in the interplay with the identities produced.

In this work a study on the Impact Factor (FI) is carried out in scientific journals with the aim of analyzing the state of the question presented by this indicator, used for the evaluation of scientific production . The work consists in studying the advantages and disadvantages of the FI, through bibliographic revisions, and which alternative indicators have been implemented due to the detected inconveniences. In addition, a practical case of FI evaluation has also been carried out with the Journal Citations Reports tool (JCR) through the Agronomy and Telecommunications categories, which has analyzed 83 agronomic magazines and 82 telecommunication reviews. Based on this theoretical-practical study, and through interviews with professionals involved with bibliometry, we investigated which bibliographic metrics are used in the University of Barcelona (UB), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) , at the University of Girona (Udg), and at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and how the FI affects the publication of articles by its research staff. Finally, we analyzed the main alternative metrics currently available.

This thesis discusses the ability of students of library and information science (LIS) department, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), Jakarta who were enrolled in 2007, in searching and evaluating internet-based information. This research uses a quantitative approach with a questionnaire as the research instrument. The result shows that the students’ ability in searching and evaluating internet-based information is low which means that their information literacy is also low. Based on this research’s result the writer suggests that LIS department of UIN should collaborate with UIN’s central library to increase the frequency of information literacy programs, by holding more seminars and workshops; the writer also suggests the need to include information literacy education in the curriculum of LIS department, and in other departments too. Both LIS department and UIN central library need to have additional qualified human resources who are ready to teach and to socialize information literacy programs.

Abstract:
Citation indexes are important authority resources for measuring the contribution of scientists and scientific publications to literature. Many studies in information retrieval are based on research aiming to develop retrieval algorithms. These studies tend to receive citations from different fields because of the interdisciplinary nature of information retrieval. Therefore, it is important to analyze the so-called “citation classics” retrospectively to find out their impact on other fields. Yet, it is not easy to do this using citation indexes, especially for relatively old papers, as traditional citation analysis tends not to reveal the full impact of a work on other studies at its time and periods that follow. In order to see the big picture it is important to study the contribution of these studies on other disciplines as well. In this study the impact of Maron and Kuhns’ citation classic on “probabilistic retrieval” published in 1960 has been visualized using pennant diagrams that were developed on the basis of relevance theory, information retrieval and bibliometrics. We hypothesized that “The interdisciplinary relations that are unobservable with traditional citation analysis can be revealed using the pennant diagrams method”. In order to test the hypothesis works that cited Maron and Kuhns’ study between the years of 1960 and 2015 have been downloaded with their references (a total of 4,176 unique works) and graphics have been prepared by the macros written in MS Excel. Of 4,176 works, 90 were selected using convenience sampling techniques to create static and interactive pennant diagrams for further analysis. Another important output of this study is the relevance rankings. As an alternative to the relevance rankings based on the similarity of references already used in citation indexes, relevance rankings have been created using the pennant diagrams that took into account not only items that cited the core (seed) paper but also citations to the items that cited the core paper. Relevance rankings based on the similarity of references and that of pennant diagrams have been compared. Findings support the hypothesis in that pennant diagrams provide information as to which papers that the core paper on probabilistic model influenced or got influenced from, directly or indirectly. Relevance ranking based on pennant diagrams revealed the impact of the core paper on information retrieval field as well as on other disciplines. Furthermore, it identified the relations between these somewhat disconnected fields, between authors, works, and journals that cannot be readily identified using traditional citation analysis. Relevance rankings using pennant diagrams seem to have been more successful than the relevance rankings based on references similarity. This study is the first such study in Turkey that uses pennant diagrams for relevance rankings. The data used in graphs and relevance rankings are available through citation indexes (the frequencies of total citations and co-citations). Thus, alternative relevance rankings based on pennant diagrams can be offered to users. Pennant diagrams can help researchers track the relevant literature more easily as well as identify how a core work influences other works in a specific field or in other fields.

Abstract:
The development of new information technologies and communication, which arose in the second half of the twentieth century, the scientific community has brought new ways of communicating science, interacting on a global scale, making the boundaries of knowledge increasingly blurred. Scientific communication, subject to the interests of large commercial publishers have tried to free themselves from the shackles imposed by them, seeking an autonomy that has been difficult to achieve, but gradually achieved thanks to the Open Access Movement, thereby allowing access and sharing of knowledge and enhancing research, researchers and institutions to which they are inextricably linked. Institutional repositories are strategically defined as dissemination tools of the produced knowledge, especially in higher education institutions, enabling the pursuit of the objectives set by that movement, helping to provide the visibility and impact so necessary for scientific work, especially during economic, political and social difficult times with consequences that have an effect on the scientific community. The work presented here had as objective to understand the attitudes and behaviour of the teaching community of Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC), in relation to access of scientific information and the need for publication by teachers, seeking to identify potential constraints to the development of a own repository, having been used, for this purpose, a questionnaire with a form of an online survey near the IPC teaching community. This study has shown that the teaching community makes extensive use of digital technologies to look up necessary information for their research work, thus supporting principles underlying Open Access, which considers this an effective and efficient means for the diffusion of scientific literature. However, this study has also indicated that in practice there are some drawbacks due to constraints related to copyright laws, publication costs and other worries, thereby supporting the implementation of a policy based on this model.

Abstract:
This text has as its basic purpose, from plural perspectives, approach the phenomenon of information. The philosophy of information is, in fact, a proposal that calls for interdisciplinarity, as it believes that each perspective can shed light on certain aspects partial. My perspective seeks to respect the plurality, diversity and the lability of the processes that make up the informative reality (as that consider in its conceptual handling the complexity of this reality), addressing some of its most important aspects for the study of the librarianship. As primary approach is intended to enact in this paper that the philosophy of information should replace social epistemology as the discipline that substantiates the library. The hypothesis which it maintains that social epistemology has not been able to provide philosophical and theoretical library science, therefore, the philosophy of information should replace in that role fundamental. They have also been carefully scrutinized those attempts that have emerged within the library, with more or less success, to find alternatives on the basis of their theoretical body, which in the case of the philosophy of information can become fruitful. Some of these alternatives are seeking an approach more broadly shows the combination of processes of knowledge in the sciences and its convergence with the technological approach. The second objective a detailed explanation to answer the question of whether the library science is a "philosophy of information applied" under the understanding that a philosophy applied is not the same be presented to a pragmatic philosophy much less a theoretic. The argument is that under the Aristotelian scheme, the librarian do not operate on propositional knowledge or sensory, but praxis, or rather poiesis, so the librarian would be a homo poieticus. Accept that that librarianship is a philosophy of information applied involves demonstrating that the establishment of the philosophy of information as a fundamental discipline of library science, contribute to the achievement of the constitution as a science, and change the framework of social research to technological.

Information has not only become the basic element of production, it also has been the efficient factor in shaping the national politics and “information” based social structures. On account of this fact, the demand for information has risen and consequently information centers have turned into centers of attraction. As Turkey do not have any information policy that would regulate the national information systems and services, information centers, libraries, archives and in general the nation have been negatively effected. The existence of a national information policy would not only contribute to the socioeconomic development of the Turkish Republic, it would also aid the Republic to carry out its vision of information society.

Abstract:
Municipal Libraries of León: A proposal to create a digital institutional repository. In this thesis we mention the role of libraries in the new framework of digital information and communication, seen as an adaptation to a new society that has arisen from the intensive use of ICT and that has left behind the days of card catalogues and book loans which were noted down with a pen. After that, we will see how libraries have evolved as a result of the huge amount of information generated by a world overloaded with data and news, the enormous flow of information and the included data that circulate through the net at a dizzying and difficult to control pace, and which has made that, for years, the need to collect all that information, select it, filter it and guard it has arisen, so that, where appropriate, we can use it to be able to make decisions that will help us to carry out our daily work. From this need arises the idea of creating a digital institutional repository to safeguard all that huge amount of information, so that it can be recovered for consultation whenever it is needed. This master’s dissertation examines the way forward to achieve this goal, which is, through innovation, to provide services that meet the needs of as wide a target population as possible. This dissertation ends with the steps that have to be taken, both technically and theoretically, to make the creation of the repository viable.

Abstract:
A study of scholarly communication, based upon written interviews with historians of colonial Brazil located in this country. It investigates the use of digitized rare books for the production of knowledge from 1995 to 2009, which corresponds to the first fifteen years of digitization projects in libraries, both research libraries and others. The goal of the present study was to verify to what extent the digitized rare books on the internet are part of the Historian´s scholarly communication process at the moment in Brazil and a possible impact factor on his research. It investigates the open access to information movement, going back to the seventeenth century, and considers the issue of the so-called "two cultures" in the sciences and the humanities. Responses create a profile of the historians studied, the use of printed and digitized collections, use of technology, aspects of the flow of information during the research process, and their knowledge of the open access movement. Among other findings, results showed that historians of colonial Brazil in this country extensively use technologies and do not feel pressured by them; find more barriers in using printed rare books than digitized rare books on the internet, but they are well aware that the digitized book does not substitute for the original printed copy. Access to digitized rare books was an impact factor on research and results may point to a possible threat to the printed book as the main tool for those historians. The majority is in favor to the Open Access Movement.

Abstract:
The philosophy of information, as a proposal for an ethical foundation for librarianship (both axiological and deontological), also influences, in various ways, on use practices of the información. The Chapter 1 includes a presentation of the fundamental problems and relevance of ethical reflection, but this does not remain in the pure ethical speculation. It is recognized that there is a plethora of views regarding the act of man and, therefore, ethical positions, which essentially have a correlation with reality. In this capitulation it arises from ethics axiological and ethical dimensions, and explain what approaches are proposed in each, without resorting to radical distinction between facts and values, which is an improper contextualization of ethical conceptual analysis. What will be done is to reconcile and articulate an axiological proposal with a consequent ethical vision of Rawlsian court. Here you attempt to ease tension between the two partners and entering into them. Chapter 2 deals with the ethics of information from the perspective of the philosophy of information, as a proposal for an ethical foundation for librarianship, both axiological and deontological, and how that influences use practices information. The first thing presented here is a summary of what constitutes philosophy of information as a concept and its appearance on the philosophical scene introito. This is accompanied by a quick presentation of its main ethical and epistemological principles and their relationship to the library. It is assumed in which ethical knowledge is not only prescriptive and normative, but thoughtful. To do this, the ontological values of the research community in librarianship are analyzed, that is, the reasons and operating structure within the internal dynamics epistemic, but not as rules but as values. In this chapter it ruminates on the advantage of the values of the library and its mission, in light of Ortega's theory. After this, the question of how a macroethics contributes to the self-understanding (development, reasoning, values) of librarianship and how your reflection and argumentation is built will be developed. Librarianship requires an innovative approach to raise macroethical notions speech thus substantiate the nature of the information reality. The philosophy of information is established as a turgid speech, which raises axiological and ethical notions novel, and can assist the library in the task of understanding their own ethical dilemmas and to reevaluate issues related to informational phenomena, ethical dilemmas paper derived technology, librarian values and using the information. new information environments through the perspective of information ecology are analyzed, and a vital sense oriented training an existential improvement in these environments, which can be called information ethics individual. Chapter 3 includes an analysis and interrelation of moral formulations stipulated in the codes of ethics of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and the National Association of Librarians of Mexico. Here or issues that might be logical, epistemological semantic be resolved, involved in the formulation and justification of the various proposals and moral theories that support them.

Abstract:
Library and Information Studies (LIS) are approached as a complex construct, which has several avenues: it is a scientific discipline that brings together a set of theories, methods and techniques supported by a concrete, precise scientific community, it is a paradigm. Likewise, it is a series of professional practices, some classic or consolidated (such as the documentary analyst and the librarian dedicated to information services), others emerging (such as the virtual librarian or the expert in controlled digital lending); also, it is a string of areas of knowledge crystallized in lines of research and in study plans for the training of people (the Librarianship career in its various denominations), developed and supported by academic and professional institutions; all this within the framework of unavoidable issues of the context in which the (LIS) is deployed, such as the applicable legislation, the labor market of the information professional, the history and evolution of nodal topics (such as the book), the advancement of technology and its applications to Library Science, among many others. This construct, to be manageable, in the terms of this proposal, requires handles to generate minimally acceptable results and contain the overflow of ideas; In this investigation, the need to adhere to a structure that would allow the delimitation of the object of study and its technical approach became clear, that is, it was required to draw coordinates that would make it possible.

A great amount of international bibliography in this field highlights the results of teams’ implementation in an organization. As libraries begin to experiment with them and discover that since they have been established work effectively as a managerial tool. Teamwork represents a concept of value and troubleshooting. It is not a panacea, if it is used selectively and enthusiastically, may enable the library to achieve its mission. The present study initially analyzes the role and importance of teams and explores team management aspects of Academic Libraries worldwide and in Greece particularly, examining theoretical and practical issues as well. Furthermore, the main aspects of the empirical investigation for Greek academic libraries regarding a) the recording of group characteristics and b) the identification of staff’s opinion for team operation and administration are documented.
