Abstract:
University teaching and learning experiences which are characterized as unsatisfactory by many faculty and students can be more precisely defined as manifestations of poorly developed higher order thinking skills. Two hypotheses relevant to this problem are explored in this thesis. The first is that it is possible to use the characteristics of good and poor problem solvers documented in the literature as a productive way of recognizing and understanding the learning problems experienced by many university students. The second hypothesis is that the integration of the characteristics of effective problem solvers into a framework of general problem solving heuristics is a practical and effective strategy to move students along a continuum to better developed higher order thinking skills within the broader context of knowledge acquisition. The teaching strategy developed from the literature and illustrated in a case study, is designed to capitalize on the scholarship of faculty often underutilized in their teaching, by encouraging faculty to be more self-conscious in making process skills explicit in a way that is meaningful to their students. As demonstrated in the case study, it is a strategy which utilizes teaching opportunities and data sources available in the classroom situation. The results of the case study indicated that, in this case: (1) characteristics of good and poor problem solvers were observable in the classroom situation; (2) faculty could learn and use the strategy effectively in the context of discipline teaching; (3) the strategy did not seriously restrict the amount of content to be taught; (4) students did acquire skills specific to the strategy implemented; and (5) that particular areas of concern for further applications were encouraging students to actively engage in process tasks, to have more confidence in their use of reasoning as a tool and to place more emphasis on the cognitive skill of evaluation.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to estimate the effect of floods on the riparian vegetation communities of the Gila Box, Arizona, based on historical maps, satellite images, and GPS-referenced airborne video. The condition and extent of selected riparian vegetation communities in 1973, 1982, and 1991 are documented. Changes in riparian vegetation communities for the time period from 1973 to 1982 and from 1982 to 1991 are analyzed to assess the potential effect of floods that occurred in 1978 and 1983, respectively. The results indicate that the floods in 1978 and 1983 may have had an impact on the mesquite riparian community. The effect of floods on riparian vegetation is most apparent in the downstream portion of the Gila River. The information collected and presented in this work can be used to formulate effective management plans to the Gila Box area.

Abstract:
Studying the ecology of cetaceans living under the pressure of anthropogenic activities is essential for their conservation. Yet, there is a paucity of information on cetaceans and shellfish farming. Using a long-term and year-round dataset, this study investigates the ecology and the behaviour of a coastal cetacean, the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), in an important area for shellfish farming (Ría de Arousa, North-West Spain). A resident population of bottlenose dolphins was present year-round in this area. Their seasonal abundance varied from 56 to 144 individuals and their apparent survival was high. Of the investigated environmental factors, depth and shellfish farms were influencing dolphins habitat use, and chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen were influencing their spatio-temporal aggregation patterns. Foraging behaviour was mainly determined by the sea surface temperature, time of the day, and whether the dolphins were foraging within shellfish farm areas. Dolphins were predicted to be more likely found foraging inside these areas than outside (57% vs. 43%). Findings of this study also revealed variation in foraging behaviour among dolphins, with some individuals foraging more frequently than others within the shellfish farms. In turn, individuals that frequently foraged within shellfish farms had weaker associations compared to others. This study generates key insights into the ecology and the behaviour of a coastal cetacean living under the pressure of the shellfish farming industry. It further provides valuable information on conservation priorities for coastal cetaceans living under such pressures as well as regulations for the shellfish farming industry

Full text
Abstract:
Women's studies has become a recognisable subject area in higher education in the UK since the first named postgraduate degree programme was offered at the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1980. This multi-disciplinaiy subject area gained impetus from the politics of the second wave women's movement, growing in popularity through adult education courses for women, and gradually entering higher education as undergraduate options mainly within sociology degree programmes. This thesis locates the growth of feminist and women's studies courses within the political and higher education context of the 1970s and 1980s. The research is based on a qualitative, case study approach of four higher education institutions. The data consist of fifty interviews with staff and students who were in various ways involved in the early years of feminist scholarship at the chosen institutions during the time period studied, as well as historical documentation about the universities and from the women's movement. The women's studies literature has constructed an account of the development of women's studies which has emphasised connections with the women's movement, and in so doing has glossed over the significance of the changing higher education context. In particular, the disciplinaiy differences between women academics and the differences in institutional cultures will be shown to have made an impact on the types of feminist and women's studies courses which were developed. In order to explore the divergent nature of the integration of feminist knowledge into the mainstream curriculum, the variety of feminist and women's studies courses which were developed in the case studies will be examined historically through the construction of their curricula, the pedagogical strategies employed, and issues of assessment on these courses.

Abstract:
Since changes to the reading/language arts State Subject Area Test (SSAT) in late 2010, elementary education teacher candidates at a teacher training college in the Southern United States have experienced declining scores resulting in test failure and delaying student teaching and graduation. The purpose of this case study was to identify factors that students and faculty perceived as most beneficial in preparing students to pass the SSAT. Constructivism served as the conceptual framework for this study addressing the effects of collaboration, hands-on learning, and application of knowledge. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 6 elementary education students who had taken the SSAT and 4 full-time reading and language arts faculty members who participated in semistructured interviews. Analysis of coded data indicated themes of preference for experiential learning, intensive strategy instruction, and a review of tested content. Based on study findings, a 3-day professional development training was created to provide students a review of tested subject matter through embedded strategy instruction and opportunities for hands-on application of learning. Implications for positive social change include preparing students to pass the SSAT in fewer attempts so they can graduate on schedule and begin their careers. Local communities may benefit from the addition of highly qualified teachers ready to enter elementary classrooms across the state during a critical teacher shortage.

The authors use an example of Russian journals in Earth sciences to analyze the availability of altmetrics for additional evaluation of different features of serials. The set of altmetrics aggregated by Plum Analytics on the Scopus platform was studied. We demonstrate the availability and applicability of the altmetrics like abstract views, full-text views, and a share of viewed items for journal assessment; high dependence between these altmetrics and traditional citation-based approaches is detected. Providing enhanced possibilities of automatic processing of altmetrics and wider covering of Russian sources, altmetrics may become a valuable scientometric tool in some complicated cases.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to generate a resource to assist construction lecturers in identifying opportunities where Building Information Modelling [BIM] could be employed to augment the delivery of subject content within individual courses on construction technology programmes. The methodology involved a detailed analysis of the learning objectives and underpinning knowledge of the course content by topic area, within the residential Construction Systems 1 course presently delivered at Unitec on the National Diplomas in Architectural Technology[NDAT], Construction Management [NDCM] and Quantity Surveying [NDQS]. The objective is to aid students’ understanding of specific aspects such as planning controls or sub-floor framing by using BIM models, and investigate how these could enhance delivery modes using image, animation and interactive student activity. A framework maps the BIM teaching opportunities against each topic area highlighting where these could be embedded into construction course delivery. This template also records software options and could be used in similar analyses of other courses within similar programmes to assist with embedding BIM in subject delivery.

Abstract:
In the article according to the theory of the subject, patterns of the existence and genesis of the subject of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” (USA) magazines was analysed, perspective of the emergence of new subjects was established, classification of the current subjects into universal and synthetic was suggested and some regularities of authorial creation of new subjects was examined. The main objective of the study is to identify patterns of existence of actual and formation of new topics in the Means of Mass Communication on the example of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines. In studying of the empiric basis of the research the method of observation is applied; in finding common themes for both publications – a comparative method was used. The method of analysis was used in the decomposition of topics into separate topics; in isolation from the features of the topic, uncharacteristic of a journalistic work – abstraction was applied. The elucidation that the subject appears as a formal verbal expression of a set of homogeneous topics was done by applying the method of formalization. The main results of the research are: obtaining the new classification of topics of “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar” magazines; identification of a significant manifestation of universal themes on the pages of publications; establishment of the basic subjective (deontological) bases of formation of new subjects. A theoretical level of their knowledge will enrich science, equip practice, promote individual and world harmony.

Enfield, Sue. Promoting Gender Equality in the Eastern Neighbourhood Region. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.063.

Full text
Abstract:
This helpdesk report synthesises evidence on the drivers and opportunities for promoting gender equality in the Eastern Neighbourhood region. Although equality between women and men is enshrined in the constitutions and legal systems of all Eastern Neighbourhood countries, and all countries have ratified most of the important international conventions in this area without reservations; women are still subject to social discrimination. Discriminatory laws, social norms, and practices rooted in patriarchal systems inherited from the Soviet era have negative consequences and act as drags upon gender equality. Former Soviet states making the transition from a command economy to a market-driven system need to make changes in governance and accountability systems to allow for women to have agency and to benefit from any nominal status of gender equality. This report considers areas where there are outstanding opportunities to improve women’s situation in Eastern Neighbourhood countries.
