Candy, Ryan David. "Resources, Strategy and Performancein the Smaller Firm." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Management, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3522.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between firm resources, positioning strategies and performance in the smaller firm. Porter’s generic strategies have been useful in describing how firms compete in the marketplace, and the resource based view has shown that resources can lead to a sustained competitive advantage. The strategic management field has begun to combine the two theories and examine the link between them. Small firms must make the best use of their relatively scarce resources. It is proposed that the relationship between resources and performance is contingent upon the positioning strategy the firm competes on, although there has only been limited supporting research to date. This research builds on work by Edelman et al. (2005) by examining the relationship between human, organisational and physical resources, and the strategies of quality/ customer service, innovation, and cost leadership in 447 retail, engineering, and professional service firms in New Zealand. Using Structural Equations Modelling this research finds that positioning strategies are the mechanism by which firms can leverage their resources into higher performance. This relationship can be modelled as mediated or moderated, with statistical analysis sensitive to model complexity. The firm’s environment influences this relationship with different resources required to support each position depending on the industry. Specifically human, organisational, and physical resources appear to be viable sources of competitive advantage when they are leveraged by a strategy of quality/ customer service, innovation or cost leadership when the industry environment is conducive to the resource – strategy combination.

Biological invasion is a threat to biodiversity, due to competition for resources between invaders and native organisms, decreasing the overall biodiversity. So, studies about the invasiveness of the ecossystems and invasion potential of exotic plants several environments must be taken to control this species. Hedychium coronarium, from the Himalayas, is an example of a high invasivisiness plant, taken to different places in the world, mainly due to ornamental uses. This study evaluated the development (height, diameter, birth and ramets mortality and internal rhyzome anatomy) of plants under different moisture contents, in in situ and in vitro experiments. We found the existence of plasticity for both vegetative ramets growth, and the internal rhyzome anatomy, which may contribute to the invasive potential of this plant.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay is a business history about the Swedish midsized tobacco company J A Boman & Co, previously Ferd Körner and Körner & Boman, which was part of the blooming tobacco industry in Sweden during the 19th century.  One purpose of the essay is to fill a gap within both business history in general and the study of tobacco companies in particular, since they both tend to favor studies on larger companies. The other purpose is to find a methodological way to study a smaller sized, older company with very few sources from the actual company. The essay seeks to answer questions about the company’s production history and how it changed over the years. The study takes use of both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the company and how it developed over time. It is not an essay deeply embedded in theory, it rather seeks to use different theoretical approaches. One approach is a micro level macro theory, that claims that a company only can be understood through the macro level and that the company, itself being the micro level, can deliver exciting new findings that creates a deeper understanding for the macro level. Throughout the essay, the company’s production statistics are examined, and combined with newspaper articles, letters and previous academic works within the field, the essay closes in on answers to the questions that were introduced in the beginning. The examination of the company finds that the midsized company managed to survive through adaptability to its time and circumstances. The company chose to sell their products through merchants instead of directly to the consumers, unlike most of the other tobacco companies at the time. The methodological problem, which was part of the essay’s purpose, was resolved by the combined method described earlier in the abstract, although the essay would admittedly have been better if there had been some papers left from the examined company.

Bordeaux 3, 2006. https://extranet.u-bordeaux-montaigne.fr/memoires/diffusion.php?nnt=2006BOR30021.

Full text
Abstract:
The question of the bird in contemporary poetry seems to be obvious. It's really impossible to open a collection of poems without seeing lots of explicit references to the bird : his fly, his singing, and his discreet but permanent presence. How to explain this recurrence in contemporary production ? And what's the foundation of the bird's particularity in the animal kingdom ? After justifying the connection of the three poets of our corpus, we based our work on analogical and transdiciplinary viewpoints. Reviving the medieval mysticism, poetry looks for the limits of human nature in the world-macrocosm. The bird, that seems the last limit for the human psychism, allows us to redefine animality in accordance with a principle of "consanguinity" (Saint-John Perse). Against the modern proclivity to dispersion and catalogue, this analogical thought circulating in the poems of our authors, wants to reconstruct the weft, to "sew up the universe". The metaphysical dimension, that is not often clearly claimed by our poets, is always underlying. Beyond a description of the real world, that is leaning on the precision of the science, another dimension, verging on rilkean "Ouvert", impregnates their works. The bird, through the patterns of the flight and the singing, draws the lines of poetics linked by aesthetic modernity

Abstract:
The three recitals consisted of performances of original eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century solo works for trombone with the exception of Lyric Suite for Euphonium and Piano by Donald White, Divertimento for Trumpet, Trombone and Piano by Boris Blacher, and Dialogue and Dance for Trombone and Tuba by Newel Kay Brown. The premiere performance of Straight As An Arrow for B-flat-F Trombone and Prepared Tape by Ronn Cox and Dean Crocker was also included. After presenting a brief biography and discussing Gordon Jacob's (1895-1984) stylistic influences, the lecture continues with a Tonal, Motivic and Formal analysis of his three works for solo tenor trombone: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, Concertino for Trombone and Wind Orchestra, and the Trombone Sonata. Tonality, modality, polymodality and free association of pitches are elements that are present at one time or another in these compositions. Jacob's inclination for using the folk song style is evident in his writing, especially in the slow movements. Introductions, transition areas, and secondary themes, with tonally ambiguous harmonies and instrumental concepts of melodies, create a tension that is released by the return to tonality in the areas that follow. Treatment of rhythmic and melodic motives helps produce the special quality found in Gordon Jacob's compositions. Over half the themes in the works being investigated are built around motivic development. Neoclassicism results from the use of forms rooted in earlier centuries, but the choice of key centers gives these forms a new life. Jacob's composition of absolute music, as well as his use of the older compositional techniques of parallel harmonies and slow introductions, reflect neoclassical practices. The performance of Jacob's pieces is facilitated by his use of musical materials idiomatic to the instrument.

Gabriel, Schenk. "A type of king : the figure of Arthur in mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century literature." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:6c284cea-e72c-49b0-ba87-29cf7b960ba9.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the figure of Arthur, in a period spanning the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, when that figure became increasingly protean and multifaceted, and the audience for the Arthurian legend grew in both size and variety. It argues that many authors wrote through Arthur, as well as about Arthur, using the figure to understand and test their own ideas about ideals (e.g. of manliness, kingship, or heroism) as well as problems (such as war, despotism, or ungodliness). This thesis analyses Arthur by considering him as a 'type', using a definition of the term that highlights a paradox: a type, in a scientific sense, is both perfect (an exemplary model) and normal (common enough to be representative). When applied to Arthur, it means that he is both a perfect, or near perfect, example, but is also to some extent a 'normal' human being. Different authors analysed in this thesis emphasise different aspects of the figure, according to whether they focus on Arthur's perfection or his normality. Other meanings of the word 'type' are also applied when relevant: the idea is not to force all versions of Arthur into a single or definitive category, but to retain the complexity of how Arthur is characterised and written about in texts. The ultimate aim of this thesis is to put the figure of Arthur into critical focus, and explain why he has been returned to so often in history.

Johansson, Martin M. "The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för organismbiologi, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-261789.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. Expression data from six different somatic tissues was analyzed and we found that the X chromosome is enriched in female biased genes and depleted of male biased ones. The second study described copy number variation (CNV) patterns in a world-wide collection of human Y chromosome samples. Contrary to expectations, duplications and not deletions were the most frequent variations. We also discovered novel CNV patterns of which some were significantly overrepresented in specific haplogroups. A substantial part of the thesis focuses on analysis of spatial expression of two Y-encoded brain-specific genes, namely PCDH11Y and NLGN4Y. The perhaps most surprising discovery was the observation that X and Y transcripts of both gene pairs are mostly expressed in different cells in human spinal cord and medulla oblongata. Also, we detected spatial expression differences for the PCDH11X gene in spinal cord. The main focus of the spatial investigations was to uncover genetically coded sexual differences in expression during early development of human central nervous system (CNS). Also, investigations of the expression profiles for 13 X and Y homolog gene pairs in human CNS, adult brain, testes and still-born chimpanzee brain samples were included. Contrary to previous studies, we found only three X-encoded genes from the 13 X/Y homologous gene pairs studied that exhibit female-bias. We also describe six novel non-coding RNAs encoded in the human MSY, some of which are polyadenylated and with conserved expression in chimpanzee brain. The description of dimorphic cellular expression patterns of X- and Y-linked genes should boost the interest in the human specific gene PCDH11Y, and draw attention to other Y-encoded genes expressed in the brain during development. This may help to elucidate the role of the Y chromosome in sex differences during early CNS development in humans.

Lucas, D. Pulane. "Disruptive Transformations in Health Care: Technological Innovation and the Acute Care General Hospital." VCU Scholars Compass, 2013. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2996.

Full text
Abstract:
Advances in medical technology have altered the need for certain types of surgery to be performed in traditional inpatient hospital settings. Less invasive surgical procedures allow a growing number of medical treatments to take place on an outpatient basis. Hospitals face growing competition from ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). The competitive threats posed by ASCs are important, given that inpatient surgery has been the cornerstone of hospital services for over a century. Additional research is needed to understand how surgical volume shifts between and within acute care general hospitals (ACGHs) and ASCs. This study investigates how medical technology within the hospital industry is changing medical services delivery. The main purposes of this study are to (1) test Clayton M. Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation in health care, and (2) examine the effects of disruptive innovation on appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and bariatric surgery (ACBS) utilization. Disruptive innovation theory contends that advanced technology combined with innovative business models—located outside of traditional product markets or delivery systems—will produce simplified, quality products and services at lower costs with broader accessibility. Consequently, new markets will emerge, and conventional industry leaders will experience a loss of market share to “non-traditional” new entrants into the marketplace. The underlying assumption of this work is that ASCs (innovative business models) have adopted laparoscopy (innovative technology) and their unification has initiated disruptive innovation within the hospital industry. The disruptive effects have spawned shifts in surgical volumes from open to laparoscopic procedures, from inpatient to ambulatory settings, and from hospitals to ASCs. The research hypothesizes that: (1) there will be larger increases in the percentage of laparoscopic ACBS performed than open ACBS procedures; (2) ambulatory ACBS will experience larger percent increases than inpatient ACBS procedures; and (3) ASCs will experience larger percent increases than ACGHs. The study tracks the utilization of open, laparoscopic, inpatient and ambulatory ACBS. The research questions that guide the inquiry are: 1. How has ACBS utilization changed over this time? 2. Do ACGHs and ASCs differ in the utilization of ACBS? 3. How do states differ in the utilization of ACBS? 4. Do study findings support disruptive innovation theory in the hospital industry? The quantitative study employs a panel design using hospital discharge data from 2004 and 2009. The unit of analysis is the facility. The sampling frame is comprised of ACGHs and ASCs in Florida and Wisconsin. The study employs exploratory and confirmatory data analysis. This work finds that disruptive innovation theory is an effective model for assessing the hospital industry. The model provides a useful framework for analyzing the interplay between ACGHs and ASCs. While study findings did not support the stated hypotheses, the impact of government interventions into the competitive marketplace supports the claims of disruptive innovation theory. Regulations that intervened in the hospital industry facilitated interactions between ASCs and ACGHs, reducing the number of ASCs performing ACBS and altering the trajectory of ACBS volume by shifting surgeries from ASCs to ACGHs.

In Disgrace as in Coetzee’s other novels, the author poses metaphysical challenges against the Manichean paradigm that backs the scheme of the colonial project as the "civilizing mission." The distabilizing of the binary supposition of subject and other underlies the structure of this novel, where the white subjects in the postcolonial South Africa become the objectified colonized. The first chapter is an introduction of the context of the novel and the main ideas of my thesis. In the second chapter I will look into the change of the subject position of the whites with Lacanian theories of the Real. The reversal of the roles of the oppressor and the oppressed illustrates the lack in the colonial system where social disturbances have subdued the white characters--David Lurie and Lucy-- to an impossible ethics of the real. In the third chapter, Lucy’s reconciliation with the black violators constitutes an irony that turns the story into a political allegory. Coetzee interrogates the essence of colonization with a mimic oppressive patriarchal system operated by violence and economic interests. I will analyze this novel in the light of form and meaning as a political allegory. In the fourth chapter, the question of identity and other that underlies the decolonizing attempt of post-colonial literature is of focus. Coetzee’s viewpoint about the internal displacement of colonial violence implicates the loss of ethics in the Post-Apartheid South African society. In conclusion, I will look into the factors why Disgrace harbors a revolutionary momentum with an impossible perspective, a difficult insight represented by the persecuted whites, Lucy in particular. It is therefore a path-breaking experiment on the part of the author and to the post-colonial literary arena as well.

In the first chapter of this thesis, I will use Kristeva's theory of abjection as a starting point to analyze the critical issue of colonial identification and representation. In this part, Fanon's study of the black psyche in a white world and Bhabha's notion of "ambivalence" will be thoroughly investigated. The analyzed text, In the Heart of the Country, is narrated in the first-per son point of view. Although the narrator Magda is a white woman, she presents her ambivalent identification with both the black and the whtiethroughout the novel. Therefore, the second chapter of the thesis is to probe into how and wh y Magda's ambivalent identification is revealed in her narrative. In this part , Kristeva's theory of "subject-in-process" will be applied to my examination of Magda's ambivalence. In the light of Kristeva'sconcept, Magda's ambivalence is actually a speaking subject's inevitable oscillation or splitting between the semiotic drives and the symbolic stasis. In the last chapter of the the sis, I intend to consider the Kristevan concept of abjection from another stan dpoint. In this chapter, Magda's dialectical narrative process is conceived as her attempt to counter abjection, or let us say, to counter the colonial ideo logical interpellation. In this part, I will employ some of Matin Heidegger's i deas in Being and Time about man's existence in the world for a further invest igation into Magda's subjectivity. With Heidegger's concept, I suppose that Ma gda's Self-abjection implies what Heidegger says Dasein's understanding of one 's own authentic possibility.

In the recent years, the Law practice is facing lots of challenges such as the change of litigation system, less clients load, overloading yet underpay, recruiting many junior lawyers each year, the Legal Aid Foundation carve out a lot of lawsuits, economic depression nationally and globally, as well as the impact of immigration or dropouts, these factors make the lawyers more competitive and turn out the red sea market price war. These challenges have a big impact on small law firms in Taipei. The study proposed that since Taipei has the majority of the lawyers, and most of them work in small law firms, those small law firms need to innovate their business model to get rid of the red sea competition while creating one’s competitive advantage. The study thus using the white space strategy to explore the customer value propositions of the external white space market target customers and to innovate the business model of Taipei small law firms The results showed that the interview participants agreed that the common customer value proposition was to appoint the lawyers who they or their relatives or acquaintances are familiar with, and who are trustworthy also be able to solve the legal disputes effectively or decrease the damage. The reasons why they have difficulties entering the legal service market are lack of access, and hard to trust unfamiliar lawyers. These customers expect their lawyers to be professional, have good attitude, be empathic and deliver knowledge of law. The study proposed a supply project and to explore the possibility of creating an innovative business model, so as to help lawyers in Taipei small law firms in transformation or innovation.

Full text
Abstract:
Coetzee's own experience of living in apartheid South Africa provides the backdrop for novels infused with sardonic irony and rich metaphoric systems. In modes of metafiction that emphasize the destructive and violent nature of language, he optimizes his unique oeuvre to interrogate global, national and domestic power relations. This dissertation relies on psychoanalytical theories that examine microstructures of power within the individual, and in his domestic domain. Each of Coetzee's chief protagonists carries a secret related to a dysfunctional mother/son relationship. This hampers their psychosocial dynamics, their masculinity and sexuality. As they respectively strive toward an elusive new life they confront patriarchal power structures that speak on behalf of individuals, '[whose] descent into powerlessness [is] voluntary' (Coetzee 2007: 4-5). Coetzee's constructed white males perform their several identity roles in milieux that span divergent phases of colonial history. His critique points to white patriarchal hegemonic ideological discourses that bespeak the self/other dichotomy in a postcolonial world where the language of dominance supports an oppressive status quo.

Introduction -- Defiance and servility in Andrew Bovell's Holy day -- Writing a reconciled nation: Katherine Thomson's Wonderlands -- Transformation of trauma: Tammy Anderson's I don't wanna play house -- The rage inside the pain: Richard J. Frankland's Conversations with the dead -- Conclusion: towards an understanding of witness to the trauma of invasion.
In an Australia shaped by neo-conservative government and by searing contention, national and global, over what the past is, how it should be allowed to affect the present and who are authentic bearers of witness, this thesis compares testimony to Australia's black/white relations in two plays by white writers, Andrew Bovell's 'Holy day' (2001) and Katherne Thomson's 'Wonderlands' (2003), and two black writers, Tammy Anderson's 'I don't wanna play house' (2001) and Richard J. Frankland's 'Conversations witht the dead' (2002).

Abstract:
TITLE: About definition of the folk fairy-tale genre and about elaboration of the Snow-white theme in collections of chosen german authors (J. K. A. Musäus, A. L. Grimm and J. and W. Grimm) SUMMARY: This diploma thesis is concerned with the fairy-tale genre, which is defined as the folk fairy-tale, Snow-white theme and elaborations of this theme in collections of J. K. A. Musäus, A. L. Grimm and the Brothers Grimm. In context of the historico-literary period and in connection with the folk fairy-tale genre all processing are analysed and compared with each other. Märchen (1971) of Max Lüthi and Deutsche Märchen vor Grimm (1942) of Albert Wesselski are the fundamental publikations for this thesis. The main result is that the caption »Sneewittchen« of the Brothers Grimm correspondes closest to the folk fairy-tale genre, while »Richilde« of J. K. A. Musäus and »Schneewittchen« of A. L. Grimm as author's fairy-tale should be called. KEYWORDS: Fairy-tale genre, folk fairy-tale, collections of german authors, Snow-white theme, Johann Karl August Musäus, Albert Ludwig Grimm, Brothers Grimm

Visser, Bennet Louis. "The significance of physical surveillance as a method in the investigation of insurance fraud: a Discovery Life perspective." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20182.

Abstract:
Text in English
The primary aim of this study is to determine the significance of the application of physical surveillance as a method in the investigation of insurance fraud conducted by the Surveillance Unit at the Forensic Department of Discovery Life. Various objectives were fulfilled in this study:  To explore, identify and describe the value of the application of physical surveillance, as a forensic investigation method, in order to determine the significance of this method in the investigation of insurance fraud at the Forensic Department of Discovery Life.  To determine whether the application of physical surveillance at the Forensic Department of Discovery Life is achieving its intended objective relating to the degree to which the beneficiary’s (Discovery Life) situation has changed as a result of this method.  To apply new information, acquired from the findings of this study, to further develop good practice and enhance performance in order to empower investigators at Discovery Life with new knowledge relating to the application of physical surveillance in the investigation of insurance fraud. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with forensic investigators employed at the Forensic Department at Discovery Life. The research has revealed that the majority of forensic investigators, other than the Surveillance Unit, at the Forensic Department of Discovery Life do not utilise physical surveillance during insurance fraud investigations to assist them in gathering evidence. These investigators also had a lack of knowledge and skills regarding the utilisation of physical surveillance during insurance fraud investigations and the advantages of this method during insurance fraud investigations. As a result of the non-utilisation of physical surveillance during insurance fraud investigations conducted at the Forensic Department of Discovery Life, important information and evidence with regard to the movement and actions of identified perpetrators who commit insurance fraud are lost to the investigators. However, the significance of the application of physical surveillance in the investigation of insurance fraud is emphasised by the forensic investigators attached to the Surveillance Unit of Discovery Life who utilise physical surveillance on a daily basis to investigate insurance fraud. The research has further revealed that insurance fraud is a major concern to the insurance industry, but can be mitigated through the implementation of unconventional investigative methods, such as physical surveillance, to enhance investigative capabilities. It was recommended that all forensic investigators at Discovery Life be trained in the techniques of physical surveillance to address shortcomings of general and out-dated investigation methods.

Leite, Carolina Maria Ferreira Alves da Costa. "The impact of pay dispersion on organizational performance." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/19156.

Full text
Abstract:
Although there are many theories and several studies aiming to explain the impact of pay dispersion on firm performance, the existence and direction of this relationship, as well as what factors moderate it, remains unclear. Using the PRISMA methodology, the present study performed a systematic literature review and gathered a sample of 26 papers on the topic to understand how pay dispersion is defined and conceptualized, if a relationship between pay dispersion and firm performance exists and if the impact of the first on the latter is positive or negative, to gather and study the existing theories that connect pay dispersion and organizational performance and understand which ones explain the found impacts, to verify if there are any variables that moderate this relationship and, if so, which ones. The present study has found that although studies on vertical pay dispersion mainly find a positive impact, confirming tournament arguments, and studies on horizontal dispersion find a negative one, confirming equity/fairness arguments, the existence of a relationship, its direction and intensity seems to depend on several contextual factors, pointing towards a contingency perspective.

Cassang, Amaury. "Impact of labor shortage on employer search strategies: A theoretical model." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/21423.

Full text
Abstract:
Labor shortage is an important issue in most countries, for both firms and the social planner, which has been understudied relatively to its importance. In this paper the author creates a theoretical framework to study the effect of such a shortage from the employer perspective. The paper focuses on the impact a shortage may have on the firm search strategy by considering the extensive/intensive dichotomy perspective. The paper investigates how labor shortage impacts the employer search strategy according to the shortage strength. To do so, the paper develops a modified version of the model created by Barron, Berger & Black (1997). The theoretical results give clear insights on the relation between labor shortage strength, profit and investment in search strategies. The paper has three main findings. First, if the firm has to stick to its original strategy, then, when facing a shortage, it should decrease the investment if it is an extensive one whatever the strength of the shortage is. However, if it invests on an intensive strategy, then, the firm should increase its investment if the shortage is enough strong. Second, the fewer the firm has resources, the more rentable the intensive search is. Finally, the study shows labor shortage impact on the search strategy of an employer by increasing the importance of extensive search for the firm. One of the main implications of this study is that it may be possible to identify labor shortage via the evolution of employer’s investment in search strategy.

Turton, Anthony Richard. "The hydropolitics of Southern Africa: the case of the Zambezi river basin as an area of potential co-operation based on Allan's concept of virtual water." Diss., 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16231.

Full text
Abstract:
Southern Africa generally has an arid climate and many hydrologists are predicting an increase in water scarcity over time. This research seeks to understand the implications of this in socio-political terms. The study is cross-disciplinary, examining how policy interventions can be used to solve the problem caused by the interaction between hydrology and demography. The conclusion is that water scarcity is not the actual problem, but is perceived as the problem by policy-makers. Instead, water scarcity is the manifestation of the problem, with root causes being a combination of climate change, population growth and misallocation of water within the economy due to a desire for national self-sufficiency in agriculture. The solution lies in the trade of products with a high water content, also known as 'virtual water'. Research on this specific issue is called for by the White Paper on Water Policy for South Africa.
