Abstract:
During a joint field trip organised by H. Streimann in 1999, the authors collected large amount of bryophytes in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria states and in the Austral Capital Territory (A.C.T.). Some of them proved to be new state records, or new records for Australia. The list below is the first selection of these records in Hepaticae, with 16 species newly reported from the whole continent.

Abstract:
A week-long hunting trial with dogs, Canis familiaris, to control feral pigs, Sus scrofa, in Namadgi National Park, A.C.T., did not cause the pigs to disperse from the area or adversely affect the success of two subsequent poisoning exercises. Hunting was generally not as effective in reducing pig numbers as poisoning with warfarin, but could be useful for obtaining samples of pigs for monitoring disease during the first few days of an exotic disease outbreak, and also for killing pigs that have survived other control methods.

Abstract:
An investigation is made of trapping methods used to survey small mammal communities in Australia. Assessment is made of sampling configuration and intensity by comparing combinations of those variables at a field site on Blundells Creek in the Brindabella Range, A.C.T. Indices of diversity were used to analyse capture data. These show that capture data from traps set in a grid configuration are highly sensitive to sampling intensity and are unlikely to represent the true community diversity. In contrast, capture data from traps set along index-lines are relatively immune to sampling intensity differences and closely measure true community diversity.

Abstract:
An aerial survey in June 1988 of highland Eucalyptus forests on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, between Canberra, A.C.T., and Cabramurra, N.S.W., revealed extensive light to medium defoliation of peppermint-gum forests, covering several thousand hectares. The defoliation was heaviest near the Corin Dam, where ground observations identified the cause of the damage as the spurlegged phasmatid, Didymuria violescens (Leach). It is suggested that the defoliation represents the start of a new outbreak, similar to that of the 1960s, which will increase in area and extend further south with each generation every 2 years causing defoliation in correspondence with the insects 2-year life cycle.

Abstract:
This paper is a partial report of an investigation into the integration program at two A.C.T. special schools catering for moderately and severely intellectually handicapped children. Teachers and parents of the children at the special schools completed questionnaires concerning the conduct and outcomes of the program. The opinions of teachers at the regular schools were obtained by personal interview.Overall there were positive attitudes expressed towards the program. Areas of concern include the level of support required for the regular class teacher, the level of preparation the handicapped children required before integration commenced, a worry of parents that handicapped children may be exposed to unnecessary pressures in the regular school system, and the fact that mere exposure of a handicapped child to a regular school environment may not lead to effective integration in the larger community.

Abstract:
This paper outlines a technique for estimating, by means of faecal pellet counts, the absolute number of eastern grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus, grazing on a given area in the A.C.T. Absolute numbers were obtained by comparing relative density of pellets on the area to be assessed, with pellet density in the grey kangaroo enclosure at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, which has a known area and a known kangaroo population. The decay rate of pellets in three different areas did not vary significantly. The average number of pellets per pellet group was similar in all three areas, but during drought kangaroos tended to drop fewer pellets per group. However, the potential error caused by this can be avoided if the control and test areas are assessed at the same time. The problem of defining a group is eliminated by counting individual pellets rather than groups.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop better techniques for controlling feral pigs, Sus scrofa, in the event of an outbreak of an exotic disease than the use of 1080. Trail-baiting with warfarin-treated wheat killed 30 of 32 feral pigs carrying radio transmitters in Namadgi National Park, A.C.T., in May 1986. The casualties took 9.7 0.4 (mean s.e.) days to die (range 6-14) and all died within 2.06 km of the bait trail. The two survivors (both males) were radio-located within 339 m of the poison trails several times, but then moved 5.1 and 1.5 km, respectively, out of the trial area. Home ranges averaged 4.7 0.6 km2 (range 0.7-22.6) and the population density was approximately 2 km-2. The pigs' mobility did not alter as death approached. They moved equal distances during the day and the night. Differences in mobility between the sexes were generally minor.

Abstract:
Citrus aurantifolia is a very common, and widely cultivated and consumed for its antioxidant properties due to its robust flavonoids content. Doxorubicin (DOX) is an antibiotic broadly used in the treatment of different types of solid tumours, but its use also comes at a cost, organ toxicity. The curative and preventive properties of Citrus aurantifolia peel extract (CAPE) in doxorubicininduced hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats were evaluated. Thirty female rats were divided into six groups of five (5) rats each in both curative and preventive studies. In curative study, five groups of rats (II – VI) received Doxorubicin (mixed with normal saline, 15 mg/kg body weight i.p) on day one, 24 hours after, graded doses of CAPE and alpha-lipoic acid (A.L.A.) were administered to groups II- V and VI respectively for 7 consecutive days. For the prophylactic study, groups II – V and VI received graded doses of CAPE and A.L.A. respectively, 24 hours after Doxorubicin was administered to groups II-VI. Groups treated with D.W. and A.L.A. were used as a negative and positive control, respectively Liver enzymes such as A.S.T., A.L.T. and A.L.P., including liver samples, were examined for histopathological changes. A significant reduction (p< 0.05) in serum A.S.T. and A.L.T. levels was observed in animals treated with CAPE 200 and 400mg/kg in the preventive study, while in curative, a significant reduction in an expected rise in serum A.S.T., A.L.T. and A.L.P. (p<0.05) was observed in animals treated with CAPE 400mg/kg when compared to the group treated with DOX + distilled water. Hepatocellular necrosis was observed in the histology of DOX- distilled water treated group. Besides, the hepatocytes of groups treated with CAPE (200 and 400mg/kg) in this study showed narrow foci of mild vacuolar change as compared with groups treated with the lowest dose of CAPE (100mg.kg) and distilled water, which revealed random foci of mild vacuolar change. This study has provided information that DOX damaged liver tissue due to an increase in liver enzymes and histopathological results showing tissue damaged in groups treated with lower doses of CAPE and distilled water. This study further demonstrates that groups treated with CAPE 200, 400 mg/kg and A.L.A. protect hepatic damage induced by DOX.

Abstract:
Flowering patterns of four and seven species of thistles were examined in Wagga Wagga, N.S.W. and Canberra, A.C.T. respectively, during the 1982-83 and 1983-84 flowering seasons. Flowering patterns at each location were sequential, consistent and differed significantly among species. The progression of anthesis among the species was as follows: Carduus pycnocephalus, Silybum marianum, Onopordum acanthium, O. illyricum, Centaurea calcitrapa, Carthamus lanatus and Cirsium vulgare. Early-flowering species typically had brief flowering periods whereas later species flowered for con- siderably longer periods. Seed (achene) dormancy patterns and optimum temperatures for germination of the first and last species of the sequences were analysed. Seeds of C. pycnocephalus exhibited pro- nounced innate dormancy for at least 2 months after seed maturation and germinated poorly at high temperatures. In contrast, some seeds of C. vulgare were able to germinate soon after seed maturation and over a wide range of temperatures. Early-flowering species probably benefit from pronounced dormancy by avoiding precocious seed germination during wet springs, while high temperatures prob- ably restrict germination after rare rainfall during the long and dry summers of Mediterranean-like southern Australia. Such dormancy is unnecessary for late-flowering species in this environment as their seeds are produced coincidentally with the onset of more reliable autumn rains.

Abstract BACKGROUND. The A.C.T. study has shown that in Europe more cancer patients (pts) with anemia are being treated with ESAs than 7 years ago. ESAs are indicated for lymphoma. Variability in treatment patterns, outcomes, and response rates in daily clinical practice need to be further investigated. OBJECTIVE. To examine anemia treatment patterns, outcomes, and response rates in the subsample of A.C.T. patients with lymphoma. DESIGN & PATIENTS. Multicenter, longitudinal retrospective study with at least 3 time points at approximately 1 month intervals, with visit 1 coinciding with start of ESA treatment. 128 centers in 13 European countries contributed 324 multiple myeloma pts who were anemic (hemoglobin [Hb] 11g/dL) and treated with an ESA (14.8% of total European sample). MEASUREMENTS. All data collected through retrospective chart review. Key variables reported here: age, chemotherapy regimen, Hb, WHO/ECOG performance status, ESA type, ESA dose incl. escalation, and iron supplementation. Response to ESA Rx: Hb rise ≥1g/dL, Hb rise ≥1g/dL within 8 weeks, hematopoietic response (Hb rise ≥2g/dL or Hb≥12g/dL achieved), Hb rise ≥2g/dL, and Hb target range of 12.0–12.9g/dL achieved by visit 3. RESULTS. Pts ranged in age from 18 to 92 years (58.4±17.6). 96.1% of pts were on chemotherapy, of which 83.4% on standard vs. 16.6% on high dose; and 17.8% on platinum vs. 82.2% on nonplatinum. Types of ESA prescribed included epoetin alfa (13.0%), epoetin beta (43.5%), darbepoetin alfa (43.5%). Results are summarized in Table 1. No severe adverse events were reported. Table 1 Treatment patterns and outcomes Visit 1 Visit 2 Visit 3 P Mean (SD) ESA dose (IU/week) 31851 (6912) 33844 (10296) 33610 (10199) 0.002 Median ESA dose (IU/week) 30000 30000 30000 n.s. The slight increase in ESA dose was not in accordance with the stable median ESA dose across the three visits. Hb increased from visit 1 from visit 3 with a concomitant rise in performance status. Iron supplementation with, in particular, IV iron was consistently low. Dose escalation rates were low, perhaps reflecting that this be an individualized patient decision. An increase in Hb of 1g/dL over the course of treatment is an attainable goal in two-thirds of lymphoma pts with anemia. Adding time constraints, increasing the threshold level to 2g/dL, and/or setting an evidence-based target range of 12–12.9g/dL is associated with lower response rates. In lymphoma pts, the therapeutic Hb goal to be achieved may need to be determined under consideration of multiple factors, however the general effectiveness of ESAs in this population is evident.

Abstract:
PURPOSE Tanzania recently developed national guidelines for early diagnosis of breast cancer to combat increasing incidence and mortality. The aim of this multiphase, adaptive implementation science study was therefore to assess the local context, couple implementation strategies with identified barriers, and test these strategies to improve breast cancer control, creating an adaptive A.C.T. framework with broad applicability to other low- and middle-income country settings. METHODS The assessment phase was made up of a broad medical chart review of women seeking care for breast concerns (n = 664); a knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey of community women (n = 1,129); and a knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey of health care providers (n = 114), followed by in-depth interviews (n = 15). RESULTS Women presented to the Zonal Hospital with swelling (45%) or a palpable lump (31%), with an average symptom duration of 6 months. Most diagnoses were based on clinical exam only (54%) and included 16% breast cancer. Of these, 43% had no treatment recorded, 50% had surgery at a median of 2.5 months, and 7% had chemotherapy only. Knowledge surveys indicated that 59% of women had heard of breast cancer, but only 14% felt they knew any signs or symptoms. Encouragingly, 56% were fairly to very confident that they would notice breast changes, and 74% said they would be somewhat to very likely to seek care, with 96% noting the severity of symptoms as a motivator. Providers indicated that barriers to care included low community knowledge and repeated misdiagnosis at the primary level. The majority of providers (95%) believe clinical breast examination is feasible to implement for symptomatic patients, yet only 65% feel they have sufficient training. CONCLUSION In all, 8 larger barriers were synthesized and linked to evidence-based interventions as potential solutions. All barriers and solutions were ranked by key stakeholders on the basis of feasibility, importance, and sustainability. These were incorporated into a 3-component intervention to improve breast cancer care at the Zonal Hospital and rollout is underway.

Abstract:
Cultivars of phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L.) were cut at various stages of development between the vegetative state and anthesis, or fortnightly during spring, to determine the effects on subsequent regeneration and persistence. The treatments were applied for 2 years to plants growing on a 200 mm grid at two field sites in the A.C.T. Most of the effects were established in the first year, in which late spring and summer were dry and hot. At a site which was irrigated during the first spring, there was little effect of a single cut at each stage of development. However, autumn regeneration of plants cut again after 14 days or cut frequently was affected. At a less fertile site which was not irrigated, and where dormancy was interrupted during summer in the first year, reductions in autumn regeneration growth of greater than 50% were observed in plants cut once at the early stem elongation and early boot stages. Most plants observed to be dead in autumn at the second site had been cut at the early boot stage. When cut at earlier stages of development, most plants which subsequently died had been cut twice. Unlike a previous study under artificial conditions, differences in autumn regeneration between a reputedly persistent cultivar (cv. Australian) and newer cultivars were not large, probably due to only small differences in synchrony of reproductive stem development occurring under the competitive spring growth conditions of this study. However, higher rates of tillering and tiller survival by cv. Australian observed after cutting prior to stem elongation should reduce its susceptibility to damage during spring. Avoidance of repeated heavy grazing of phalaris during spring, or sudden heavy grazing of tall stands in the stem elongation phase, is recommended to enhance persistence should seasonal factors become unfavourable for tiller survival.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND. The A.C.T. study has shown that in Europe more cancer patients (pts) with anemia are being treated with ESAs than 7 years ago. ESAs are indicated in solid and hematological malignancies. Variability in treatment patterns, outcomes, and response rates in these tumor categories needs to be further explored. OBJECTIVE. To examine differences in anemia treatment patterns, outcomes, and response rates between patients with solid vs. hematological malignancies. DESIGN & PATIENTS. Multicenter, longitudinal retrospective study with 3 time points at approximately 1 month intervals; start of ESA treatment at visit 1. 307 centers in 13 European countries contributed 2192 pts (n=630 with hematological tumors; n=1562 with solid tumors) who were anemic (hemoglobin [Hb] 11g/dL) and treated with an ESA. MEASUREMENTS. Retrospective chart review. Variables reported here: age, chemotherapy regimen, Hb, WHO/ECOG performance status, ESA type, ESA dose incl. escalation, and iron supplementation. Response to ESA Rx: Hb rise≥1g/dl within 8 weeks, hematopoietic response (Hb rise≥2g/dl or Hb≥12g/dl achieved), Hb rise≥2g/dl, and Hb target range of 12.0–12.9g/dl achieved by visit 3. RESULTS. Pts ranged in age from 18 to 94 years (61.5 12.7) with no difference between groups (p=ns). 95.2% of pts were on chemotherapy, of which 92.9% on standard vs. 7.1% on high dose (solid 94.3% and 5.7% vs. hemato 89.1% and 10.9%, p=0.001); and 40.5% on platinum vs. 59.5% on nonplatinum (solid 49.1% and 50.9% vs. hemato 12.8% and 87.2%, p=<0.001). Types of ESA included epoetin alfa (solid 23.2% vs. hemato 14.4%), epoetin beta (solid 41.7% vs. hemato 44.8%), darbepoetin alfa epoetin alfa (solid 34.6% vs. hemato 40.8%), and other epoetin alfa (solid 0.4% vs. hemato 0.0%; overall differences p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS. Slight increase in mean ESA dose between tumor types and across visits was not in accordance with the stable median ESA dose. Hb increased from visit 1 from visit 3 for all pts, but more so for pts with hematological malignancy, who moreover started out at lower Hb levels. Performance status increased in parallel with Hb, but more so for hematological patients. Hb levels were found to be an interaction of tumor type and time. A concomitant pattern was observed for performance status. Iron supplementation with esp. IV iron was consistently low, however with more hematological pts receiving esp. IV iron. Dose escalation rates were low, perhaps reflecting that this be an individualized patient decision. Response rates for pts with hematological malignancies were consistently higher than those for solid tumors, except for reaching Hb target of 12–12.9 g/dl. Hematological pts tended to have ESA Rx initiated at lower Hb levels thus showing more room for Hb improvement and therefore greater likelihood to fall in various responder categories. Overall, an increase of 1g/dl is achievable for the majority of pts. Adding time constraints, increasing the threshold level to ≥2g/dl, and/or setting an evidence-based target range of 12–12.9g/dl is associated with lower response rates in both groups, with slight advantage for hematological patients within caution above. ESAs are effective and safe in the management of cancer-related anemia for pts with hematological malignancies and solid tumors.

Abstract:
This paper describes the findings of the complete reconstruction of the lineage Y chromosome haplotype of the French Emperor Napoléon I. In a previous study (Lucotte et al., 2013) we reconstructed, for more than one hundred Y-STRs (Y–short tandem repeats), the Y-chromosome haplotype of Napoléon I based on data comparing STR allelic values obtained from the DNA of two of his living descendants: Charles Napoléon (C.N.) and Alexandre Colonna Walewski (A.C.W.); in the present study we compare STR allelic values of C.N. and A.C.W. to those of Mike Clovis (M.C.), a living fifth generation descendant of Lucien (one of Napoléon’s brothers). When compared between M.C., C.N. and A.C.W., STR allelic values are identical for a total of 93 STRs; that permits us to propose those values, for which the three living descendants are identical, as expected allelic values of Napoléon I’s Y-chromosome haplotype. For seven STRs, allele values are variable between M.C., C.N. and A.C.W.; we propose for three of them (DYS442, DYS454 and DYS712) expected allelic values, based on data concerning the allele distributions of these STRs in the population.

Abstract:
Sequences of matrices with increasing size naturally arise in several areas of science, such as, for example, the numerical discretization of differential and integral equations. An approximation theory for sequences of this kind has recently been developed, with the aim of providing tools for computing their asymptotic singular value and eigenvalue distributions. The cornerstone of this theory is the notion of approximating classes of sequences (a.c.s.), which is also fundamental to the theory of generalized locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences, and hence to the spectral analysis of PDE discretization matrices. Drawing inspiration from measure theory, here it is introduced a class of functions which are proved to be complete pseudometrics inducing the a.c.s.\ convergence. It is also shown that each of these pseudometrics gives rise to a natural isometry between the spaces of GLT sequences and measurable functions. Furthermore, it is highlighted that the a.c.s.\ convergence is an asymptotic matrix version of the convergence in measure, thus suggesting a way to obtain matrix theory results from measure theory results.

Abstract:
The species Piper petiolatum de Candolle (1866: 161) was first described based on specimens collected by J. D. Hooker and T. Thomson from Khasia hills and by W. Griffith (Kew Distribution numbers 4405 & 4410, these numbers were assigned in 1860’s at Kew before distributing the specimens to different herbaria) from East Bengal (present day Bangladesh – however, the labels on the sheets reveal that the Griffith specimens were actually collected from NE India, which is discussed below). Three years later, in A.P. de Candolle’s Prodromus, A.C.P. de Candolle cited these specimens under Chavica petiolata de Candolle (1869: 389), but did not mention his earlier publication of Piper petiolatum nor was the name listed it in the ‘Species e Pipere exclusae’. Eventually, Hooker in Flora of British India (1886: 84) also overlooked that this species name was already published under Piper Linnaeus (1753: 28) by A.C.P. de Candolle and transferred Chavica petiolata to Piper and cited his name as the author made the new combination. However, Hooker observed that the Khasian specimens quoted by A.C.P. de Candolle were actually of Piper thomsonii (de Candolle 1869: 389) Hooker (1886: 87), which was described along with Chavica petiolata. The former species is often treated as a synonym of Piper sylvaticum Roxburgh (1820: 158) (e. g. Long, 1984), although as stated by Gilbert and Nianhe (1999) certain discrepancies exist.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractFor two modules M and N, iM(N) stands for the largest submodule of N relative to which M is injective. For any module M, iM: Mod-R → Mod-R thus defines a left exact preradical, and iM(M) is quasi-injective. Classes of ring including strongly prime, semi-Artinian rings and those with no middle class are characterized using this functor: a ring R is semi-simple or right strongly prime if and only if for any right R-module M, iM(R) = R or 0, extending a result of Rubin; R is a right QI-ring if and only if R has the ascending chain condition (a.c.c.) on essential right ideals and iM is a radical for each M ∈ Mod-R (the a.c.c. is not redundant), extending a partial answer of Dauns and Zhou to a long-standing open problem. Also discussed are rings close to those with no middle class.

This case study intends to determine the key informant's experiences in transitioning from Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) institution to conventional schools in Capiz. This study utilized interviews, observation, and data reviews in gathering the data while the Mayring (2002) approach was utilized in analyzing the data. Themes came out from the constructs of the interviewees in Capiz, like S.O.T. curriculum is offered in Pre-School to Junior High School only, difficulty in transitioning from S.O.T. school to conventional schools offering Senior High School Program and conventional schools must be adopted and integrated to the S.O.T. Abstract:
Suppose that a semiprime (-1, 1) ring \(R\) is associative, satisfies the ascending chain condition for the right annihilators of the form \(r(w)\), where $w$ belongs to the nucleus \(N(R)\) and \(R\) contains no infinite direct sums of nonzero right ideals. Then the right quotient ring of $R$ relative to the subset \(W = \lbrace w \in N(R) / w \) is regular in \(R\rbrace\) exist and it is semisimple and artinian. Also if \(A\) be a nonassociative complex Banach algebra which satisfies ascending chain condition on left ideals and assume that the center \(Z(A)\) of \(A\) consists of regular elements then \(Z(A)\cong \mathbb{C}\). As a result if \(A\) be a (-1, 1) noetherian complex Banach algebra then \(A\) is finite-dimensional.
