This dissertation intends to gather, index and analyze texts published by author Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto (1881-1922) on the periodical A. B. C. (1915-1934) between 1916 and 1922, with emphasis the series of chapters of the satire Os Bruzundangas; we also investigate the weekly publication in order to paint an accurate picture of it. The analysis of these texts in as a whole has not been done until now, and was made with the intention of possibly noting the influence of the medium on its production. Annexed to the dissertation we have Lima Barreto's writings that were not yet edited, a critical comparison between the chapters of Os Bruzundangas published in A.B.C. and an index of the periodical during the production of satires and illustrations. Mestrado em Ensino de MúsicaO presente trabalho propõe uma abordagem complementar ao ensino dos modos gregorianos, que faz parte do programa do primeiro ano de Análise e Técnicas de Composição (A.T.C.). Ao invés da utilização dos modos estar circunscrita à música medieval e renascentista, pretende-se que os alunos adquiram uma visão mais global da utilização dos modos, incluindo a música Hindustani e a música tradicional portuguesa. Do ponto de vista da composição, enquanto que em A.T.C os modos servem de base à escrita de contraponto de espécies, neste estudo servem de base à improvisação, nos instrumentos dos alunos, seguindo o modelo da música Hindustani. Finalmente, explora-se a possibilidade de aplicar a mesma abordagem a outros conteúdos da disciplina
The present document proposes a complementary approach to gregorian modes, part of the first year’s programme in the subject of Analysis and Composition Techniques (A.T.C.). Instead of confining the use of gregorian modes to medieval and renaissance music, we intend that the students acquire a global vision of the modes’ use, including Hindustani and traditional portuguese music. While in A.T.C. the modes serve as basis to species counterpoint, in this study they are used for improvisation, in the students’ instruments, following the model of Hindustani music. Finally, this approach is applied to other contents of the subject.

El objetivo principal de esta tesis ha consistido en Desarrollar una propuesta de implantación del ABC al sector hotelero. También se ha perseguido revisar los sistemas de costes aplicados al sector hotelero para superar los inconvenientes que presentan, mejorar la comprensión del ABC orientado a las empresas de servicios y exponer una revisión de las últimas tendencias en la investigación sobre el ABC.La estructura de esta tesis es la siguiente. Tras una breve introducción, se estudian en el primer capítulo la evolución y las fuentes doctrinales del ABC. El segundo capítulo se dedica al análisis de la viabilidad del sistema ABC en empresas de servicios. Se han revisado distintas publicaciones al respecto sobre casos tan diversos como los referidos a ferrocarriles, hospitales, bancos, empresas financieras, comunicaciones, compañías de seguros, etc.
En el tercer capítulo se estudia el sector turístico y las particularidades de la empresa hotelera, revisando las publicaciones de estudios de costes más destacados relacionados con la misma y de estudios de ABC en hoteles.
En los capítulos cuarto y quinto se han desarrollado la aplicación práctica del sistema ABC en una empresa hotelera real mediante el método del caso. Primero se exponen las fases de la implantación llevadas a cabo en relación con la identificación, codificación y análisis de las actividades realizadas en los distintos procesos de la empresa. Se han elaborado los mapas y el diccionario de las actividades. Se ha realizado la fase de racionalización de las mismas con el fin de agregarlas o desglosarlas según convenga. Después se han analizado todos los elementos de coste consumidos en la empresa, determinando después el coste de las actividades y de los servicios y productos. También se calculan los resultados obtenidos en la organización.
Las conclusiones alcanzadas están relacionadas con el sistema ABC en general y con la aplicación del mismo al sector hotelero. Entre ellas remarcamos el hecho de haber comprobado que el ABC es aplicable a empresas de servicios y, en especial a las hoteleras, al menos en el caso estudiado y de haber constatado que es crucial tener en cuenta el factor humano (trabajadores, dirección, equipo del proyecto) en el proceso de aplicación del ABC.
The primary target of this thesis has consisted of Developing a proposal of implantation of the ABC to the hotel sector. Also it has been persecuted to review the systems of costs applied to the hotel sector to surpass the disadvantages that present/display, of improving the understanding of the ABC oriented to the companies of services and to expose a revision of the last tendencies in the investigation on the ABC.
The structure of this thesis is the following one. After a brief introduction, the evolution and the doctrinales sources of the ABC have been studied in the first chapter. The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the viability of the ABC system in companies of services. Different publications have been reviewed on the matter on as diverse cases as the railroad referred ones, hospitals, banks, financial companies, communications, insurance agencies, etc.
In the third chapter, the tourist sector and the particularitities of the hotel companies have been studied, reviewing publications of studies of more outstanding costs related to the same one and of ABC studies in hotels.
In the chapters fourth and fifth the practical application of the ABC system in real a hotel company has been developed by means of the case method. First the carried out phases of the implantation in relation to the identification, codification and analysis of the made activities in the different processes from the company are exposed. The maps and the dictionary of the activities have been elaborated. The phase of their rationalization has been made. Later all the elements of cost consumed in the company have been analyzed, determining after this the cost of the activities and the services and products. Also the results obtained in the organization have been calculated.
The reached conclusions are related to the ABC system in general and its application to the hotel sector. Among them we emphasizes the fact of to have verified that the ABC is applicable to companies of services and, in special to the hotel case studied and to have stated at least that is crucial to consider the human factor (workers, direction, equipment of the project) in the process of application of the ABC.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of pre-entrance factors and the success of students in an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree nursing program at a community college in East Tennessee. The criterion variable was success in the nursing program. Success was defined as academic success in all nursing courses and completion of the nursing program to graduation. The predictor variables of pre-entrance factors were gender, age, Health Education Systems, Incorporated (HESI) A2 scores, Pell Grant eligibility, pre-nursing GPA, and prior licensure. The data for this non-experimental secondary analysis were derived from the electronic database in the community college Banner system. The population of the study consisted of all students accepted into the A.A.S. Nursing Program at a selected community college for academic years beginning 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16. The population of the study was approximately 300 students. Analyses of the data were completed using independent samples t-test and chi-square cross tabs. Findings revealed that the mean HESI A2 scores were higher in those students that successfully completed the Nursing program than those that did not complete the program. Findings revealed a statistical significance between gender and program completion with females more likely to successfully complete the nursing program than male students. The factors that had no significant relationship to successful completion were age, high school GPA, Pre-nursing GPA and holding prior licensure. Findings also revealed students who are Pell eligible were not significantly more likely to complete the nursing program than those students who were not Pell eligible.

Ao partir de um cantus firmus pop/rock ao invés de cantus firmi modais ou tonais, pretende-se que os alunos compreendam que o contraponto é uma técnica de composição que, embora seja centenária, tem aplicações transversais a vários estilos e géneros musicais da atualidade.
The present document proposes a different and complementary approach to species counterpoint, which is taught in the official music schools on the 6th grade, in the subject of Analysis and Composition Techniques (A.T.C.). Using a pop/rock derived cantus firmus as a basis instead of the modal or tonal cantus firmi, we intend that the students understand that the counterpoint is a composition technique which, although it’s centenary, it has transversal applications to various musical styles and genres of the present day.

Even though English is the second language of the majority of South African learners,
this language is still the preferred medium of instruction. The purpose of the study
was to analyse the present situation regarding the teaching of language skills in some
second language medium of instruction (L2MI) content classrooms and to determine
content teachers' willingness and ability to incorporate language teaching into their
content teaching. The study furthermore aimed to establish whether South African
content teachers require a specific training programme for teaching through medium
of English and to compile a profile of the effective L2MI teacher reflecting the
language, methodological and presentational skills that such a teacher uses. By
establishing the nature and level of the language proficiency required for effective
L2MI, this study proposes a model for a course for improving the language proficiency
of L2MI teacher-trainees and, finally, an integrated training course for L2MI teacher-trainees
based on the profile of an effective L2MI teacher. A description of the
implemented course, together with a review by both the students and the instructor, is
also provided.
A survey of the relevant literature, as well as qualitative and quantitative research
methods, was used in this study that consists of 4 articles. Different research methods
and instruments were used in each of the articles.
Article 1 supplies an analysis of the L2MI situation in some subject content
classrooms in South Africa and Namibia. The article shows that, despite
acknowledging responsibility for teaching language skills, the majority of these
teachers failed to perform language-teaching duties in the content classroom. The
reasons for these teachers' inability are ascribed to a number of reasons, including a
lack of appropriate training programmes for L2MI teachers.
Article 2 supplies answers to the question relating to the characteristics of the L2MI
teacher. The research conducted in this article combines information from all the
relevant fields of English medium of instruction in order to introduce a profile of the
effective L2MI teacher. This profile allows teacher trainers and course designers to
develop training programmes that will deliver a supply of teachers meeting the target
of the ideal teacher.

Article 3 focuses on the competences necessary for effective communication through
medium of Classroom English, the related knowledge and skills, as well as the
situations and domains of communication (i.e. teaching activities). A hybrid model for
course design, developed from a combination of the Outcomes-Based and Backward
Design models for course design, is used to provide an outline for a language
development course for teachers who are second language speakers of English.
Article 4 describes a training course for L2MI subject content teacher-trainees that will
enable the trainee to develop knowledge and skills in all the aspects required for
effective L2MI. The integrated L2MI course suggested for teacher training in Article 4
is based on the model for course design proposed in Article 3. It uses the information
from previous articles relating to the profile of the effective L2MI teacher, and the
nature of the language proficiency required by the teacher who is a second language
teacher of English to propose Critical and Learning Outcomes, Evidence of
Performance, and Assessment Standards. This article then describes the
implementation and review of the integrated course. The outline of the course, the
example of the Instructional Plan used for this course, as well as the exemplary
lesson plan provided, can enable future course designers to adapt and develop
similar courses, streamlined for the specific needs of their students. A checklist for
planning an L2MI lesson and an observation sheet for effective L2MI developed for
this course provides students with a strategy, or tool, for taking cognisance of, and
giving consideration to, the required skills and strategies when planning a subject

Resumo: o emprego de antiinflamatórios em cirurgias bucais minimiza o edema, o trismo e a dor. Nesta pesquisa comparamos, clinicamente, em duplo-cego cruzado, os antiinflamatórios papaína e ácido acetil salicílico em cirurgia bucal. Trinta e dois pacientes sadios foram submetidos a mesma intervenção cirúrgica em duas ocasiões diferentes,e que consistiu na avulsão dos terceiros molares inferiores retidos. Os pacientes foram divididos em quatro grupos, recebendo cada grupo, no pós-operatório das intervenções, drogas diferentes, as drogas objeto do estudo e seus placebos.O parâmetro para se mensurar a ação antiinflamatória das drogas foi o edema facial. O tempo médio entre as intervenções foi controlado, variando.de 18'14" a 21'05". A papaína não se mostrou significante na redução dos edemas tanto em relação ao seu placebo quanto em relação ao A.A.S. O A.A..S. se mostrou significante na redução dos edemas, somente em relação ao seu placebo
Abstract: The use of anti-inflammatories in the post operative of oral surgery minimizes swelling, trismus and pain. In this work we compared by clinical double-blind crossover, papain and acetylsalicylic acid in oral surgery. Thirty two healthy patients, in two separate occasions,were submitted to the same surgerYr which consisted of the surgical remova 1 of impacted mandibular third molars: a total of sixty four operations performed. The patients were divided into four groups, receiving each group a different drug after each operation (the tested drugs and its placebos). The tested parameter was the facial swelling. The average time between operations was controlled to vary between 18'14' , and 21'05' '. The papain did not show any significant reduction in facial swelling if compared to its placebo or to the ASA. ASA did show a reduction in the facial swelling only when compared to its placebo

Le travail de cette thèse vise la réalisation d’un nouveau capteur d’images pour mobile en technologie CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). Ce capteur a été développé en vue de répondre à une forte demande du marché. Les prochaines générations de produits, nécessitent des capteurs d’image avec des performances agressives. Par exemple, le niveau de qualité d’image peut être fortement amélioré avec des architectures faible bruit, ou l’utilisation de nouvelles technologies, pour augmenter le niveau du signal ou diminuer la consommation. L’augmentation de la qualité d’image entraîne un agrandissement de la taille des matrices de pixels, et de la résolution des données. La vitesse de conversion devient donc critique. Le sujet de cette thèse porte sur l’amélioration de ce dernier point. Une étude comparative a été réalisée pour étudier différentes architectures. Le convertisseur à rampe est le mieux adapté pour les petits pixels. Toutefois, son principal inconvénient est son temps de conversion qui nécessite 2N cycles d’horloge. Afin d’obtenir un frame rate plus élevé, une méthode tirant profit du bruit photonique a été proposée. Ce circuit de lecture est fondé sur un convertisseur à rampe par morceaux, et un algorithme qui permet la linéarisation des données. Afin de réduire le bruit, cette nouvelle architecture doit prendre en compte le double échantillonnage corrélé digital. Durant la période de conception, des modes de test ont été mis en place pour permettre la caractérisation du circuit. L’innovation se trouve dans le développement d’une rampe par morceaux qui réduit le temps de lecture d’une ligne de 1us. Cependant, ce développement a besoin d’une calibration adaptée. Un prototype de capteur d’image CMOS de 13Mpixel a été fabriqué en 65 nm, 5 niveaux de métaux, et 1 seul niveau de poly en technologie CMOS standard. Les mesures ont montré que l’INL et DNL du convertisseur étaient aussi performantes qu’avec une rampe linéaire classique. Une attention particulière a été apportée sur la mesure du bruit. Malheureusement, le bruit s’est montré plus élevé qu’avec un capteur « classique ». Cependant, la consommation reste identique en ayant une vitesse de conversion plus rapide. Les solutions proposées sont simples à intégrer structurellement, et faciles à mettre en œuvre. Elles ont l’avantage de ne pas impacter la surface du pixel et préservent donc les performances de ce dernier. Les résultats issus des mesures sur silicium sont très encourageants, car on obtient un gain de presque 20% sur le temps de lectureThe aim of this thesis is the implementation of new image sensors for mobile in CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology to meet strong market demand. Next generations of products require image sensors with high performances.These improvements would change the image quality with low noise architecture in one hand, and the use of new technologies to increase the signal level, or reduce the power consumption in the other hand. The gain in image quality leads to increase the size of the pixel’s array, and the resolution of the data -the conversion speed becoming critical-. The subject of this thesis focuses on improving this latter point. A comparative study has been made between several architectures to find the best solution that would fit our needs.The ramp converter is the most suitable for small pixels, but his main drawback is the conversion time that requires 2N clock cycles. To obtain a higher frame rate, a method taking advantage of the photon noise has been presented. This readout circuit is based on a piecewise linear ramp converter and an algorithm that allows the linearization of the data. Furthermore, for noise reduction, the new architecture must take into account the digital correlated double sampling. During the period of design, test modes have also been designed and implemented to allow characterization of the circuit.The innovative part is the use of a piecewise linear ramp, which in simulation, reduces the readout time of 1us per row. However, this element needs calibration. A CMOS image sensor prototype of 13Mpixel has been made in 65 nm, 5 levels of metals, and 1 level of poly standard CMOS technology. Measurements showed that the INL and DNL of the converter were as good as with a conventional linear ramp. A careful consideration has been given to the measurement of noise, which unfortunately is higher than a "conventional" sensor. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESThe expansion of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, under the leadership of Alexander The Great, prompted the accession of Hellenic cultural dimensions throughout the West and Middle East in a process of cultural diffusion known as Hellenization. However, hellenistic cultural dominance was not without struggle Thus, this research has proposed as an hypothesis that the Old Testament book of Daniel is a result of a socio-religious experience that countered epicureanism by highlighting the principle of faithfulness to Yahweh. Daniel’s apocalypse offers a conception that the Jewish monotheistic deity interferes history in a conclusive manner, since in the end of time it will be judging all of the infidels (Dan 7: 13-14). Such philosophical system believed that the gods were in a state of ataraxia, blissfulness, serenity, antipathetic to any human feeling. Therefore, from a cultural approach of the religious phenomenon it has been scrutinized if the book of Daniel, written in an apocalyptic language, presents a proposal of socio-religious way of life posing an antithesis to the Epicurean doctrine while fostering the maintenance of a Jewish identity related to the divine figure of Yahweh in the second century BCE.
A expansão do império macedônico, sob a égide de Alexandre o Grande, impulsionou a adesão de dimensões culturais helênicas pelo mundo Ocidental e Médio-Oriental em um processo de circularidade cultural denominado de helenização. Contudo, houve contestações à dominação cultural helenística. Desse modo, esta pesquisa propôs como hipótese que, o livro veterotestamentário Daniel é produto de uma experiência sócio-religiosa e se opôs ao epicurismo colocando em evidência o princípio de fidelidade a Javé. O apocalipse daniélico apresenta uma concepção de que a divindade monoteísta judaica interfere na história de modo definitivo, pois no final dos tempos julgará todos os infiéis (Dn 7, 13-14). Esta percepção se opõe sobremaneira ao pensamento de uma escola filosófica do período helenístico, a epicurista. Tal sistema filosófico veiculava que os deuses eram ataráxicos, bem aventurados, imperturbáveis, incompatível com qualquer sentimento humano. Então, a partir de uma abordagem cultural do fenômeno religioso investigou-se, se o livro de Daniel, redigido em uma linguagem apocalíptica, apresenta uma proposta de modo de vida, na qual é possível perceber uma contra-argumentação à doutrina epicurista ao mesmo tempo em que fomentava a manutenção de uma identidade judaica ligada a divindade Javé no II séc. a.E.C.

There is little solid research that explores counterinsurgency practices against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), not only from the standpoint of what is being done, but, rather, what should be done based on past COIN successes. Notable works on counterinsurgency in Colombia include the research of Tom Marks, who focused on operational strategy and tactics; Kevin Self, who professes the importance of controlling territory in defeating the FARC, by addressing the social and institutional ills within Colombia itself; and Dennis Rempe, who notes US involvement in shaping Colombia's COIN strategy. Using a comparative case study model, this thesis provides an analysis of Colombia?s counterinsurgency (COIN) strategies and tactics through the lens of successful and unsuccessful COIN operations in Iraq, Algeria, Malaya, South Vietnam, Thailand, Algeria and El Salvador over the course of the 20th and early 21st centuries. After all, no matter how successful a COIN force is militarily, their accomplishments will ultimately be fruitless if the conditions which fuel insurgency remains present. This paper begins by providing the historical context for the conditions which shaped the Colombian social order, which led to the revolutionary movement. It then follows the growth of the FARC, examining that organization?s strengths and weaknesses. The FARC is contrasted by outlining recent COIN transformation efforts within the Colombian government, to include little acknowledged failures and successes, strengths and weaknesses. An important focus is placed on Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez? Democratic Security Policy as the model for Colombia?s current COIN efforts. After next examining various ongoing factors contributing to the Colombian insurgency?to include institutional failures, illicit funding and the problem of paramilitary groups?this thesis examines past COIN efforts by other governments. Finally, after applying lessons learned from thee past COIN efforts?cross-referencing historically successful and unsuccessful tactics with tactics used and not used by Bogota in its fight against the FARC?I provide recommendations to the government of Colombia (GOC) on how to improve its COIN efforts. Although it is important to look at this problem set from an external standpoint, we must still factor in internal factors that have limited Colombia?s ability to emerge victorious, such as allowing porous borders, airspace and coastlines; placing a priority on killing or capturing the enemy and not on engaging the population; and the primacy of military direction of counterinsurgency; disregard of basic human rights; an insufficient judiciary structure; failure to halt financial support mechanisms; and the lack of an outlet for political inclusion . From this vantage point, we will be able to see that these elements?when properly implemented?have proven successful over time and may enhance GOC success and ultimately result in victory over the insurgency that has plagued their country for 40+ years

Market based generation dispatch is becoming the industry norm in advanced electrical jurisdictions. Due to the continuous evolution of markets and their potential impacts on system operation, studies are performed from economic and social perspectives in order to gauge the effects of any changes before implementation into live systems. In addition, it is essential to verify the effect of changes in market design on power systems from a technical perspective. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a real-time power system simulator for use in the investigation of market designs and automatic generation control schemes. The scope of this thesis is the mathematical algorithms used in the simulator, hardware and software implementation, and validation of the implemented simulator. The simulator is based on a modified version of the power flow calculation using an innovative combination of a standard numerical technique implemented on a readily available computing hardware platform. The result is a significant decrease in computation time.
The power flow is performed repeatedly, with frequency being calculated between time steps to provide system dynamics. Frequency is calculated using a modified version of the generic generator swing equation. Generator and load models and their respective control systems are provided for the purposes of simulator validation and testing, although do not fall within the scope of the simulator itself.

Political advertising on television is a relatively “new” phenomenon in South African general election campaigns (circa 2008). The purpose of this study is to analyse and compare the three sampled 2009 and 2014 African National Congress (A.N.C.) political television advertisements, with a specific focus on the verbal, non-verbal and visual rhetoric in the communication of election campaign messages. To achieve this goal, the study reviewed literature in the subject of rhetoric and post-colonial perspectives in the areas of Afrocentrism and Eurocentrism, focusing specifically on the seminal work of the Afro-centrist, Molefi Asante, and the anti-Western-centric scholar, Samin Amin. The study uses social semiotics (as both a theoretical approach and a research methodological framework). As a theoretical approach, the social semiotic approach was conceptualised by Valentin Voloshinov (1973) and Michael Halliday (1978), and it argues for the creation of social meaning within a text and within a society. The study focuses on the former, the creation of meaning within a text, that is, the content of the three sampled political
advertisements. As a research framework, the approach was adapted by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen (1996). The study favours their social semiotic research method which provide the interpreter/researcher with dimensions, or “tools’, with which to explicate and deconstruct textual meanings. Thus, in this study, social semiotics as part of the broader field of discourse analysis, was used to deconstruct the latent and manifest ideologies of the non-verbal, verbal and visual rhetoric of two 2009 and one 2014 A.N.C. political television advertisements. Using this combined theoretical framework (rhetoric, social semiotics and Afrocentrism and Eurocentrism), and, research approach, it could be determined whether the verbal, non-verbal and visual rhetoric of these three A.N.C. political television commercials represents Afrocentric and/or Eurocentric post- colonial
The main findings of the study show that both the visual and verbal rhetoric of the sampled A.N.C. political television commercials represents a combination of a varying ideological constructs, namely the “nationalist”; “socialist”; “liberal feminist”; and, “liberal capitalist ideologies” (cf. Haywood 1998; Thompson 2003). Furthermore, the findings of the study point out that the verbal, non-verbal and visual rhetoric of the selected A.N.C. political television commercials, are neither exclusively Afrocentric nor Eurocentric in nature. Both post-colonial perspectives are represented, in varying degrees, in the sampled A.N.C. commercials.
The study makes a significant contribution to the political communication landscape in South Africa, in that, it is an exclusively qualitative content analysis, as opposed to previous, quantitative content-analysis studies (cf. Fourie 2008; Fourie & Froneman 2003; Fourie & Froneman 2001). It is also important to note that as far as can be determined, that this is the first study to use social semiotics, as either a theoretical framework or a research method.
The key limitation of the study is that, it only focuses on three purposely sampled A.N.C. election campaign television advertisements, and does not include the political television advertisements of opposition political parties, such as the Democratic Alliance.Communication Science
