Abstract:
Abstract Making use of deficiencies, inversions and translocations, we have genetically dissected the region 95E to 96F of Drosophila melanogaster. We localized cytologically the loci abnormal spindle (asp: 3-85.2: 96A20-25;96B1-10) and M(3)96C2 (96C1;96C5). We have also found several new phenotypes associated with lesions in the 95E to 97B region: (1) Minute(3)96A (M(3)96A) is a haplo-insufficient phenotype of thin and short bristles presented by individuals deficient for the region 95E6-8;96A1-5. (2) abdominal-one reduced (aor) shows two different phenotypes associated with the distal breakpoint of In(3R)Ubx7L (89E;96A1-7). One is the increase of the Ubx phenotype, but its effect requires the presence of lesions in Ubx. The other phenotype is a drastic reduction or disappearance of the first abdominal segment. Both phenotypes might be due to lesions in the same gene. (3) metaphase arrest (mar) is associated with the breakpoint of the T(Y;3)B197 (96B1-10) and produces a phenotype typical of mitotic mutants with arrest of the cell cycle during prometaphase or metaphase. There is another region localized in 97B which interacts with asp: in a background homozygous for asp, three doses of this region enhance the asp phenotype.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe Egmond Gospels, a much cherished manuscript in the Netherlands, have provoked a wealth of publications, descriptions, commentaries, catalogue entries etc. Most noted are the two dedication miniatures representing count Thierry of Holland (d. 988) and his wife Hildegard, offering the Evangeliary to the abbey of Egmond. The MS is now in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, cod. 76 F I. In the present article an attempt has been made to describe the colour programme of these two miniatures more accurately with the help of a stereomicroscope and the Munsell Color Atlas. Some suggestions have been made about the pigments which were probably used. A new date for the miniatures has been proposed, taking into consideration their historical context and their iconography. The most likely period is from 974 to 980. In this period double portraits are being introduced in the West, in the Ottonian world. An incentive for this new style was undoubtedly the arrival of the Byzantine princess Theophano who married Otto II in 972. In the Byzantine world imperial double portraits were very common. After the death of her father-in-law Otto I, in 973 and the official recognition of her co-rulership in 974, her role became more prominent, and may have stimulated the making of Western double portraits, if not as propaganda then at least to imitate Byzantine court life. Egbert, son of Thierry II and Hildegard, became chancellor of the Reich in 976 and archbishop of Trier in 977. He played an important role in Ottonian art as a patron and promoter, in which Byzantine influence is clearly discernible. Iconographical elements in the Egmond Gospels, such as the proskynesis, the disproportion between donors and 'authorities', the symmetry, the double portrait etc. betray influence from Byzantine iconography. Byzantine influence, indirectly via the Ottonians, was thus an active force in the execution of these miniatures, wherein Egbert is likely to have played an active role, even if the artist and the workshop are unknown.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to develop the ‘Teachers’ Efficacy Perceptions of the AI-based Teaching Applications (TEP-AITA) scale’ and to describe the analysis of the background variables and the differences between six factors in the application of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) teaching efficacy perceptions questionnaire. In total, 714 vocational senior high school teachers participated in random and cluster sampling in Taiwan. The results showed that the internal consistency reliability of the measure was .988 and that the reliability of the six subscales was .975, .971, .981, .976, .972, and .967. The results found that TEP-AITA scale included ‘Resource support’, ‘Innovative teaching’, ‘Cross-disciplinary’, ‘Professional learning’, ‘Learner demand’, and ‘Self-reflection’. ‘Cross-disciplinary’ and ‘Learner demand’ were highly rated, while ’Resource support’ was low. This study analyzed the differences in the perceived efficacy for AI-based teaching applications among teachers according to their background variables, such as their gender, current position, school attributes, teachers’ seniority, and application AI teaching experience. The research results on teacher background factors and the six factors of the TEP-AITA scale could be provided to education units for the active promotion of AI information technology teaching and training.

"Sufficient leaf transpiration and nonstructural carbohydrates are beneficial for high-temperature tolerance in three rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars and two nitrogen treatments." Functional Plant Biology 42, no. 4 (2015): 347. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/fp14166.

Full text
Abstract:
To determine whether variations in high-temperature (HT) tolerance in three rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars and two N treatments are related to leaf transpiration rate (E), and whether the involvement of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in HT tolerance is related to E, a pot experiment supplied with two N levels (low N, 0.077 g urea kg–1 soil; sufficient N, 0.538 g urea kg–1 soil) was conducted under ambient temperature (AT) and HT with three cultivars, N22, Zhenshan 97B and Koshihikari. HT significantly decreased grain yield and seed setting percentage in Koshihikari and ZS97, which could be partly offset by a sufficient N supply. The most HT-tolerant cultivar, N22, had the highest E and stem NSC concentrations under both N treatments, whereas the most sensitive cultivar, Koshihikari, had the lowest E and stem NSC concentrations. A sufficient N supply significantly increased E in the three cultivars under the HT treatment. Grain yield and seed-setting percentage were positively related to E and plant NSC concentration under HT, and E was positively related to NSC concentration under both AT and HT. Therefore, variations in HT tolerance among rice cultivars and nitrogen treatments were related to E, and possibly to NSC concentration.

Abstract:
Anthocyanin pigmentation is an important morphological marker that is commonly used to identify rice varieties and for linkage analysis. The following study investigates the genetic factors involved in the purple stigma (Ps) and purple apiculus (Pa) traits of an important indica rice cross between Zhenshan 97 (purple stigma and purple apiculus) and Minghui 63 (grey stigma and colourless apiculus). A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from this cross was used for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping of the purple stigma and purple apiculus traits. As a result, one major QTL for the purple stigma trait, temporarily designated qPS-1-1, and one major QTL for the purple apiculus trait, temporarily designated qPA-1-1, were mapped to the short arm of chromosome 6 in the interval between the two markers Y4073L and *P. The LOD peaks of qPS-1-1 and qPA-1-1 were 44.0127 and 173.3585, respectively. In addition, qPS-1-1 and qPA-1-1 explained 66.7416% and 98.6441% of the total phenotypic variance, respectively. The Zhenshan 97 allele increased the purple stigma trait by approximately 8.0355% (for qPS-1-1) and 9.8863% (for qPA-1-1). Moreover, since qPS-1-1 and qPA-1-1 were strongly correlated, they were also located in the same vicinity of the C gene on the short arm of chromosome 6, which suggested that the two QTL might be the same. By comparing these and previous results, it was deduced that qPS-1-1 or qPA-1-1 was the C gene and was pleiotropic for both the colouration of the apiculus and the colouration of the stigma in rice.

Abstract:
The contraction of a muscle generates a force that decreases when increasing the contraction velocity. This “hyperbolic” force–velocity relationship has been known since the seminal work of A. V. Hill in 1938 [Hill AV (1938) Proc R Soc Lond B Biol Sci 126(843):136–195]. Hill’s heuristic equation is still used, and the sliding-filament theory for the sarcomere [Huxley H, Hanson J (1954) Nature 173(4412):973–976; Huxley AF, Niedergerke R (1954) Nature 173(4412):971–973] suggested how its different parameters can be related to the molecular origin of the force generator [Huxley AF (1957) Prog Biophys Biophys Chem 7:255–318; Deshcherevskiĭ VI (1968) Biofizika 13(5):928–935]. Here, we develop a capillary analog of the sarcomere obeying Hill’s equation and discuss its analogy with muscles.
