Abstract:
On a beef carcass, Escherichia coli may sequentially encounter acid- and heat-intervention steps. This study tested whether acid stress (1.5% [vol/vol] acetic acid, pH 4.0, 37°C, 15 min) would enhance subsequent heat resistance of E. coli. Initially, cells (E. coli O157:H7 ATCC 43894, nonpathogenic E. coli B [strain FRIK-124], and rpoS-deficient mutant 813-6 [derived from E. coli O157:H7 ATCC 43895]) were acid stressed and transferred to 54°C tiypticase soy broth (TSB), and survivors were immediately enumerated after at least three intervals of 12, 2, and 6 min, respectively, by plating. The ATCC 43894 and 813-6 strains survived the acid stress but strain FRIK-124 did not. Acid-stressed ATCC 43894 had significantly lower D values than the non-acid-stressed controls. Strain 813-6 had significantly lower D values than strain ATCC 43894, with no significant difference between acid-stressed and non-acid-stressed cells. In a second experiment, cooling of cells prior to plating resulted in an increased D value for acid-stressed ATCC 43894 cells, such that it was not significantly different from the D value for non-acid-stressed Controls. Using this protocol, there was no significant difference in D values between acid-stressed and non-acid-stressed ATCC 43894 cells in prewarmed TSB (54, 58, and 62°C), in prewarmed ground beef slurry (GBS; 58°C), or in TSB and GBS inoculated at 5°C and heated to 58°C. The acid stress tested does not enhance subsequent heat resistance of E. coli.

Abstract:
The surveillance and virological characterization of H5N8 avian influenza viruses are important in order to assess their zoonotic potential. The genetic analyses of the Egyptian H5N8 viruses isolated through active surveillance in wild birds and domestic poultry in the winter of 2016/2017 showed multiple introductions of reassortant viruses. In this study, we investigated and compared the growth kinetics, infectivity, and pathogenicity of the three reassortant forms of H5N8 viruses detected in wild birds and domestic poultry in Egypt during the first introduction wave in the winter of 2016/2017. Three representative H5N8 viruses (abbreviated as 813, 871, and 13666) were selected. The 871/H5N8 virus showed enhanced growth properties in vitro in Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK) and A549 cells. Interestingly, all viruses replicated well in mice without prior adaptation. Infected C57BL/6 mice showed 20% mortality for 813/H5N8 and 60% mortality for 871/H5N8 and 13666/H5N8, which could be attributed to the genetic differences among the viruses. Studies on the pathogenicity in experimentally infected ducks revealed a range of pathogenic effects, with mortality rate ranging from 0% for 813/H5N8 and 13666/H5N8 to 28% for 871/H5N8. No significant differences were observed among the three compared viruses in infected chickens. Overall, different H5N8 viruses had variable biological characteristics, indicating a continuous need for surveillance and virus characterization efforts.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and etiology of hearing loss in primary and middle school students in the Hubei province of China. During a 2-year period, 504,348 students were examined by a speech audiometry test, and 813 deaf students were detected. Among the 813 deaf students, 232 cases were diagnosed with congenital deafness and 560 cases had acquired deafness, among which 276 cases had aminoglycoside-antibiotic-induced deafness. The severity of deafness could be further ascertained in 804 other students, with 402 profound, 363 severe, 21 moderate and 18 mild deafness cases. The age at deafness onset of most students was under 3 years. The prevalence of congenital and acquired deafness was 0.046% (232/504,348) and 0.111% (560/504,348), respectively, much lower than previously reported in other regions of China. Abstract:
This study aims to adapt the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6) to the Philippines, gathering evidence of its validity and reliability. Two studies were conducted. Participants in Study 1 were 340 college students (Mage= 20.63; 62.1% female), who completed the GQ-6 and demographic questions. The exploratory factor analysis was performed, indicating a one-factor solution (a= .80). Participants in Study 2 were 813 college students (Mage= 19.99 years; 50.1% male), who answered the GQ-6, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, the Subjective Happiness Scale, and the Spirituality/Religiousness items. Results corroborated the one-factor structure (e.g., CFI= .98, RMSEA= .05) showing evidence of its association with life orientation (r= .29), subjective happiness (r= .08), and religiosity (r= .31). The scores from the GQ-6 also exhibited invariance across gender. In conclusion, the GQ-6 provide evidence of factorial and criterion validity and reliability, justifying its use in the Philippines.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We report on the discovery and validation of TOI 813 b (TIC 55525572 b), a transiting exoplanet identified by citizen scientists in data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the first planet discovered by the Planet Hunters TESS project. The host star is a bright (V = 10.3 mag) subgiant ($R_\star =1.94\, R_\odot$, $M_\star =1.32\, M_\odot$). It was observed almost continuously by TESS during its first year of operations, during which time four individual transit events were detected. The candidate passed all the standard light curve-based vetting checks, and ground-based follow-up spectroscopy and speckle imaging enabled us to place an upper limit of $2\, M_{\rm Jup}$ (99 per cent confidence) on the mass of the companion, and to statistically validate its planetary nature. Detailed modelling of the transits yields a period of $83.8911 _{ - 0.0031 } ^ { + 0.0027 }$ d, a planet radius of 6.71 ± 0.38 R⊕ and a semimajor axis of $0.423 _{ - 0.037 } ^ { + 0.031 }$ AU. The planet’s orbital period combined with the evolved nature of the host star places this object in a relatively underexplored region of parameter space. We estimate that TOI 813 b induces a reflex motion in its host star with a semi-amplitude of ∼6 m s−1, making this a promising system to measure the mass of a relatively long-period transiting planet.

Investigações recentes no âmbito do quadro teórico de K. Nelson têm demonstrado que uma das primeiras formas de tratamento da informação utilizadas pelas crianças são baseadas nas experiências de vida e nas representações destes acontecimentos rotineiros. Nelson e colaboradores propõem que estas representações de acontecimentos são como que "sementes" cognitivas, funcionando não só como formatos nas interacções sociais, mas também como organizadores estáveis do conhecimento, permitindo o desenvolvimento de estruturas de conhecimento mais complexas. Este trabalho insere-se nesta problemática. Pretendeu-se estudar como é que as estruturas de acontecimentos familiares podem influenciar o desenvolvimento cognitivo / linguístico das crianças de idade pré-escolar. A partir de relatos de crianças dos 3 aos 6 anos sobre um dia de escola e uma festa de aniversário. Estudámos : 1- estrutura do discurso tipo-script e graus de complexidade; 2- diferentes indicadores linguísticos referentes a estruturas de tempo; 3- a capacidade de resolução de um problema de ordem linguística. Para além de um efeito da idade, os resultados evidenciam a importância dos scripts enquanto organizadores do conhecimento e sua influência na produção / compreensão dos termos linguísticos analisados. Revelam ainda um efeito do estimulo (dia de escola / festa de aniversário) apontando para o facto de que acontecimentos mais familiares e estruturados têm influência nas representações verbalizadas e no domínio dos termos linguísticos das crianças destas idades.

Les complexes à transition de spin présentent un phénomène de bistabilité moléculaire entre deux états de spin (états bas-spin et haut-spin) énergétiquement proches. Ils suscitent un grand intérêt pour de nombreuses applications possibles dans les domaines de l'électronique et de l'optique. Les méthodes basées sur la théorie de la fonctionnelle densité (DFT) ont montré leur efficacité dans le calcul des structures moléculaires, le calcul des fréquences des modes de vibration et des déplacements fréquentiels dus à une substitution isotopique ainsi que la possibilité d'attribuer tous les modes de vibration, le calcul des propriétés thermodynamiques. . . Comme le présentent nos études sur les complexes à transition de spin [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2], Fe[5-NO2-sal-N(1,4,7,10)], [Fe(L)(CN)2]. H2O, [Fe(TRIM)2]2+, [Fe(bpp)2]2+ et [Fe(PM-BiA)2(NCS)2]. En outre, nos calculs DFT démontrent leur potentiel dans la prédiction de propriétés structurales particulières pour des complexes de taille importante telles que l'existence de conformères pour le complexe Fe[5-NO2-sal-N(1,4,7,10)] ou l'existence d'un changement de coordinence (6 - 7) avec le changement d'état de spin pour le complexe [Fe(L)(CN)2]. H2O, confirmant ainsi des suggestions ou des résultats expérimentaux. Enfin, nous avons déterminé les propriétés électroniques microscopiques à l'aide de méthodes DFT grâce aux calculs de tenseurs de polarisabilité. Ces calculs nous ont permis de mettre en évidence et de confirmer l'origine microscopique des propriétés diélectriques mesurées accompagnant la transition de spin, et de comprendre les comportements atypiques de la variation thermique de la permittivité diélectrique de certains matériaux à transition de spin
The spin-crossover complexes exhibit a phenomenon of molecular bistability between two spin states (low-spin and high-spin states) energetically very close. They are of great interest for many potential applications in the fields of electronics and optics. The methods based on density functional theory (DFT) have proved to be efficient in the calculation of molecular structures, the calculation of vibrational frequencies modes, frequency shifts due to isotopic substitutions and the ability to assign all vibrational modes, the calculation of thermodynamic properties. . . As presented by our studies on the [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2], Fe[5-NO2-sal-N(1,4,7,10)], [Fe(L)(CN)2]. H2O, [Fe(TRIM)2]2+, [Fe(bpp)2]2+ and [Fe(PM-BiA)2(NCS)2] spin crossover complexes. Furthermore, our DFT calculations results demonstrate their potential in specific structural properties prediction for large size complexes such as the existence of conformers for the Fe[5-NO2-sal-N(1,4,7,10)] complex or the existence of a coordination number (6 - 7) change with the spin states change for the [Fe(L)(CN)2]. H2O complex, confirming suggestions or experimental results. Finally, we determined the microscopic electrical properties using DFT methods with the calculations of polarizability tensors. These calculations allowed us to identify and confirm the microscopic origin of the measured dielectric properties accompanying the spin transition, and understand the atypical behaviour of the dielectric permittivity thermal variation of some spin-crossover compounds

Abstract:
External optical feedback can significantly alter the operating characteristics and output radiation properties of semiconductor diode lasers. A semiconductor injection laser operating in an external cavity is attractive for numerous applications requiring greater spectral purity, frequency stability, and smaller beam divergence than can be obtained from a solitary laser diode. A linear array of diode lasers was fabricated from a bar of five, 6-µm wide, 250-µm center spacing, single-stripe emitters. The external cavity was formed by a 0.75 pitch graded-index rod lens positioned ~1 µm from the front facet of the bar array. The rod lens transfers an image of the radiating bar facet directly from the back to the front of the rod. The external cavity is therefore formed by optical feedback from the front surface of the rod with the rod lens also performing the function of the intracavity lens element. This dual function of the graded-index rod lens enables the array laser to assume a very compact form in comparison to other external cavity configurations. It was observed that the wavelength of each diode element could be controlled through proper alignment of the external cavity. Once the diode elements were operating at the same wavelength, the array could be tuned over a 15-nm range (798-813 nm). A mutual coherence interferometer was constructed to determine qualitatively the existence of a phase locked condition. A very clear interference fringe pattern was produced. Frequency locked, mutually coherent, operation of five diode elements was achieved, with external wavelength control demonstrated.

Abstract:
The author offers new possibilities for interpretation of Frankish, domestic and Byzantine sources regarding the Bulgarian political control over territories of Avar Khaganate, destroyed by Charlemagne. The main focus is placed on the certificate of embassy led by Princeрs Avarum and Canizauci in Aachen in November 811. Coordinating it with Bulgarian and Byzantine sources, leads to the following conclusions. 1. It is likely that the diplomatic mission to Charlemagne in 811, involving representatives of the Avar com­munity, led by its Tudun and Slavic tribal princes, was led by the Bulgarian prince – Omurtag, the younger brother of the ruler Krum (802? – 814), in his capacity as prince (princeps) and ombritag. i. e. Avars hegem­on, in the northwestern borders after 803 and „Khan’s beloved younger brother” (khani sev`ingi or khani sev(inč) ingi). In Aachen, he introduced himself as a cani zautzi, that is, with his post of „Khan’s envoy”. 2. The khanas uvigi Omurtag (814–831) missions to Emperor Louis in 824 and 825–826 appear to have also been led by a member of the ruling family in Plisk oba (Pliska), maybe from his second son – Zvinitsa/Zvinichis. They also appear to have had a representative/s of settlers between 813 and 837 in Trans­Danubian Bulgaria (probably in the Lower Tisza region) of Bulgarian captives of Eastern Thrace of Armenian origin. One of their leaders in 837 was named Tzantzès, and his son, Stilian, and his descendants gained fame in Byzantium under the surname Ζαούτζης, Ζαούτζας. It coincides exactly with the pro­Bulgarian official title (position) zautzi (tzautci), (=chaush) and probably derived from it. On this basis, we conclude that Τζάντζην (Öан¤·þ воеводэ) was performing the carrier of messages or emissary functions of the Bulgarian state before 837. 3. The considered evidence, facts and circumstances surrounding the Bulgarian diplomatic missions of 811, 824 and 825/6 provide new testifies for the Bulgarian state’s control over the south-eastern parts of the Avar Khaganate after its collapse in the period 791–803. They have a contribution to clarify important aspects of the Bulgarian state’s relations with the East Frankish Kingdom, as well as with the local population of Avars, Bulgarians and Slavs there.

Abstract Paraffin represents one of the main case of failures and production losses which facing the entire oil industry. Prevention of paraffin deposition on the subsurface/surface equipment can be achieved by keeping the paraffin dissolved in crude oil or minimizing the adhesion or aggregation process of wax crystals. The paraffin problems which occur, conduct to gradual reduction of the tubular and pipelines internal diameter, restriction or valves blockages, and reduce the equipment capacity until the production is stop. Problems due to paraffin deposition varies and is different according with each commercial field, sometime the difference is from a well to well which producing from the same reservoir with different consistency. How we shall proceed? Before or after paraffin is field on the equipment? How could be avoid the future paraffin deposition? How long the selected method is proper for well ? The decision represents a combination based on oil's chemical & physical characteristics, well's behavior, method selected for prevention or elimination and combined with economic analysis and field experience. The paraffin inhibition applying is a common practice in OMV Petrom, which cover majority of the production wells. For the special wells, which the paraffin inhibition didn't provided satisfying results (multiple intervention due to paraffin deposition) was selected the Down Hole Heating technology (DHH) which was successfully tested in our company since 2014 thanks according with the yearly New Technology Program. The operating principle consists in heating the fluid volume from tubing using the heating cable which can be installed inside tubing, for NF and ESP wells or outside tubing for SRP or PCP wells. The cable is designed and located at the interval of wax crystallization appearance and heats the fluid to the temperature higher than the wax crystallization point (WAT). Since then, the DHH technology had an upward course, proven by high run life (highest value 2500 days / average 813 days) of the technology at the total 47 wells equipped, until this moment. Based on the successful results, recorded of 64% of old production wells equipped, it was decided to apply the technology at first completion of the new wells (36%), thus ensuring the protection of the new equipment. The paper offers an overview of DHH technology implementation, achievements, benefits and online monitoring of technology implementation starting with 2014 until today. The total impact shown a decreasing of no.of failures with 73,8%, the cost of intervention with 76,5%. The production losses decreased only with 5%, which certifies the fact that the technology helping production maintaining during the exploitation in comparison with production losses due paraffin issues recorded at wells without equipped with DHH technology. During 6 years of down hole heating technology application were developed candidate selection decision tree, monitoring the electrical efficiency, using the adaptability capacity of the technology from one well to another and integrate the temperature parameters in online monitoring system as part of digitalization concept of OMV Petrom, aspects which will be present in this article.

Abstract:
There are not so many comprehensive studies for helminthological contamination of urbanized environment of the northern part of Belarus with eggs of helminths of carnivores including domestic ones. The routine examination for environmental contamination by helminth eggs carried out by the Sanitary and Epidemiological Services is limited to foci of incidence in humans. This determines the need for constant monitoring of parasitic contamination of environmental objects on urbanized territories of the northern part of Belarus. The article contains data on the species diversity of helminths in domestic carnivores found in the soil of the selected area. 813 soil samples were taken and analyzed. Twelve helminth genera were identified, namely, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris spp., E. granulosus, Taenia spp., Dipylidium spp., Ancylostoma spp., Uncinaria spp., Strongyloides spp., Trichocephalus spp., Capillaria spp., Mesocestoides sp., and Alaria sp., which belong to three classes, Trematoda, Cestoda, and Nematoda. The highest prevalence in both urban and rural areas was observed for representatives of the genus Toxocara. The helminth species diversity in urban areas exceeded that in rural areas. The found species were represented by bio- and geohelminths. Eight of the species found belong to the group of zoonotic helminths: T. canis, T. leonina, D. caninum, A. caninum, U. stenocephala, T. vulpis, E. granulosus, and A. alata.
