Abstract:
AbstractAlthough breakfast consumption is widely considered to be an important component of a healthy lifestyle, few UK studies have examined differences in nutrient intakes between breakfast consumers and breakfast skippers among children and adolescents. We investigated associations between breakfast skipping in 4–18-year-olds and their nutrient intakes using data from the UK’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme. Dietary data were derived from 4-d estimated food diaries of 802 children aged 4–10 years and 884 children aged 11–18 years (1686 in total). Daily nutrient intakes of children with different breakfast habits were compared by one-way ANCOVA adjusting for relevant covariates (sex, age, ethnicity, equivalised household income and BMI). Within-person analysis was carried out on children with an irregular breakfast habit (n879) comparing nutrient intakes on breakfast days with those on non-breakfast days using repeated measures ANCOVA. We observed that the overall nutritional profile of the children in terms of fibre and micronutrient intake was superior in frequent breakfast consumers (micronutrients: folate, Ca, Fe and I (P<0·01)) and, for the 4–10 years age group, on breakfast days (micronutrients: folate, vitamin C, Ca and I (P<0·01)). Also, significantly higher proportions of breakfast-consuming children met their reference nutrient intakes of folate, vitamin C, Ca, Fe and I compared with breakfast skippers (χ2analysis,P<0·001). Our study adds to the body of data linking breakfast consumption with higher quality dietary intake in school-age children, supporting the promotion of breakfast as an important element of a healthy dietary pattern in children.

Abstract:
Pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariifolium) is produced for extraction of insecticidal compounds from the flower achenes. In 2004 and 2006, isolations from necrotic lesions on stems and leaves in three fields in northern Tasmania, Australia yielded four unidentified fungal isolates. Leaf lesions were medium brown and circular (2 to 4 mm in diameter) or irregular in shape (2 to 5 mm long). Stem lesions were irregular, necrotic spots, 5 to 15 mm below the flower peduncle, medium brown, 2 to 4 mm long, and 1 to 2 mm wide. Isolations were conducted on water agar following surface sterilization. Isolates were identified by colony characteristics and the presence of metabolite ‘E’ (1). On oatmeal agar (OA), colonies had irregular margins, were greenish olivaceous-to-olivaceous gray with sparse, white, floccose, aerial mycelia. On malt extract agar (MEA), cultures were variable in color with olivaceous black centers with soft, dense, aerial mycelia. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoidal to oblong, mainly aseptate, but occasionally 1-septate with dimensions ranging from 2.5 to 7.5 × 1.8 to 3.8 μm (length/width ratio = 1.7 to 2.1). All isolates had moderate reactions to the NaOH test for metabolite ‘E’. DNA was extracted from all four isolates with a DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (QIAGEN Inc., Valencia, CA). For identification, the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1, 5.8s, and ITS2) and part of the translation elongation factor (TEF) region were amplified and sequenced. Primers ITS1 and ITS4 (2) were used for the ITS region and primers EFCF1 (5′-AGTGCGGTGGTATCGACAAG) and EFCF6 (3′-CATGTCACGGACGGCGAAAC) were used for the TEF. Amplicons were sequenced in both directions and consensus sequences assembled. The ITS sequence was 100% identical to Boeremia exigua var. exigua (GenBank Accession No. GU237715). Base pairs 413 to 1,214 of the TEF sequence from the pyrethrum isolates matched base pairs 1 to 802 (799 of 802 identities) of B. exigua var. exigua (GenBank Accession No. GU349080). All isolates were confirmed as B. exigua var. exigua using morphology and sequencing. Pathogenicity tests were conducted three times in separate glasshouse trials for two of the four isolates. For each isolate, conidial suspensions in water (3 ml/plant) from MEA, adjusted to 5 × 105/ml were applied with Tween 20 (1 drop per 100 ml of water) to 8-week-old pyrethrum plants (five pots per isolate with four plants per pot) using a hand-held spray bottle. Twenty plants were sprayed with water and Tween 20 as nontreated controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags for 48 h after inoculation and examined for symptoms after 15 days at 20°C. Disease incidence (number of symptomatic leaves affected per total number of leaves) of the inoculated plants varied from 7.5 to 9.4%. Noninoculated plants did not develop symptoms. Isolations resulted in cultures morphologically identical on MEA and OA to those inoculated. To our knowledge, this is the first report of B. exigua var. exigua causing disease in pyrethrum. Cultures were deposited in the New South Wales Department of Agriculture collection (DAR79101 to 79104) and TEF and ITS sequences for DAR79101 in GenBank (Accession Nos. JF925328 and JF925329, respectively). Boeremia blight is likely to contribute to the fungal disease complex causing reductions in green leaf area in Australian pyrethrum production. Abstract:
Climate change induced sea-level rise (SLR) is on its increase globally. Regionally the lowlands of China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and islands of the Malaysian, Indonesian and Philippine archipelagos are among the world’s most threatened regions. Sea-level rise has major impacts on the ecosystems and society. It threatens coastal populations, economic activities, and fragile ecosystems as mangroves, coastal salt-marches and wetlands. This paper provides a summary of the current state of knowledge of sea level-rise and its effects on both human and natural ecosystems. The focus is on coastal urban areas and low lying deltas in South-East Asia and Vietnam, as one of the most threatened areas in the world. About 3 mm per year reflects the growing consensus on the average SLR worldwide. The trend speeds up during recent decades. The figures are subject to local, temporal and methodological variation. In Vietnam the average values of 3.3 mm per year during the 1993-2014 period are above the worldwide average. Although a basic conceptual understanding exists that the increasing global frequency of the strongest tropical cyclones is related with the increasing temperature and SLR, this relationship is insufficiently understood. Moreover the precise, complex environmental, economic, social, and health impacts are currently unclear. SLR, storms and changing precipitation patterns increase flood risks, in particular in urban areas. Part of the current scientific debate is on how urban agglomeration can be made more resilient to flood risks. Where originally mainly technical interventions dominated this discussion, it becomes increasingly clear that proactive special planning, flood defense, flood risk mitigation, flood preparation, and flood recovery are important, but costly instruments. Next to the main focus on SLR and its effects on resilience, the paper reviews main SLR associated impacts: Floods and inundation, salinization, shoreline change, and effects on mangroves and wetlands. The hazards of SLR related floods increase fastest in urban areas. This is related with both the increasing surface major cities are expected to occupy during the decades to come and the increasing coastal population. In particular Asia and its megacities in the southern part of the continent are increasingly at risk. The discussion points to complexity, inter-disciplinarity, and the related uncertainty, as core characteristics. An integrated combination of mitigation, adaptation and resilience measures is currently considered as the most indicated way to resist SLR today and in the near future.References Aerts J.C.J.H., Hassan A., Savenije H.H.G., Khan M.F., 2000. "Abstract 802: Dynamic FRET-Based Ca-Calmodulin Measurements in Intact Ventricular Myocytes Uncover Differential Signal Integration Due to Ca-Calmodulin Affinity." Abstract:
Background: Myocyte [Ca] i varies beat-to-beat and calmodulin (CaM) transduces Ca signals to regulate many cardiac functions (e.g. via CaM-dependent kinase, CaMKII, and calcineurin, CaN). We hypothesize that the different Ca-CaM affinities of CaMKII (Kd ∼45 nM) and CaN (Kd ∼2 nM) will dictate their dynamic and tonic binding to Ca-CaM. Methods: Two adenoviral vectors encoding FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) based biosensors with affinities similar to CaMKII and CaN (BsCaM-45 vs. BsCaM-2) were generated to monitor Ca-CaM dynamics in adult rabbit ventricular myocytes (with extra CaM expression via adenovirus). Results: Ca-CaM binding reduces FRET and increases the fluorescence emission ratio (F 480 /F 530 ). Figure shows the lower affinity sensor BsCaM-45 (like CaMKII) turns on and off completely with only slight diastolic increase at 1.0 Hz (5% ± 2.5%, vs. 0.1 Hz, n = 5). In contrast, the higher affinity sensor BsCaM-2 (like CaN) showed significant diastolic signal integration at 1.0 Hz (20% ± 3%, n = 5, p < 0.05). BsCaM-2 (n = 5) has slower kinetics vs. BsCaM-45 (n = 5): at 1.0 Hz, time to peak: 218 ± 11 vs. 244 ± 15 ms, ns; τ-decay: 647 ± 17 vs. 321 ± 25 ms, p < 0.05). Conclusion: CaM target proteins with different affinities (like CaMKII and CaN) respond very differently to the same Ca signal, (integrating vs. phasic), presumably tuned appropriately for their signaling pathway. This dynamic response shapes subsequent cellular processes in the heart. Indeed, altered diastolic [Ca] i or heart rate (as in pathophysiological states) can differentially influence downstream CaM-dependent pathways.
