Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines late Tang poetic representations of the early fifth-century tale of Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao's romance with divine maidens at a Shangri-La-like peach blossom font. Shi poems by such poets as Liu Yuxi (772-822) and Yuan Zhen (779-831), and a group of Huajian ("among the flowers") ci poems under the tune "Nüguanzi" ("The Daoist Priestess") by Wen Tingyun (ca. 812-866) and others, reveal the exploration of the old tale as a rich source of allegorical tropes. In particular, the late Tang poets consistently revitalize the Liu-Ruan tale's bifurcation between the immortal and the mortal worlds, a division between "two worlds" that enabled them to express a range of different meanings at different levels, for example in politics or when talking of love affairs.

Abstract:
Aims. To determine the formation of physico-chemical properties of different ripening varieties of soft winter wheat grain under different fertilizer systems in a field crop rotation. Methods. Laboratory, mathematical and statistical, physicochemical. Results. The article presents the formation of physico-chemical properties (thousand grain weight, grain unit, hardness index, protein content) of different ripening varieties of soft winter wheat grain under different fertilizer systems in the field crop rotation. On average, over two years of research, thousand grain weight of KWS Emil soft winter wheat increased from 37.2 to 38.5 g, depending on the fertilizer system. The use of all types of fertilizers increased it by 3 % compared to areas without fertilizers. There is no significant difference between fertilizer application systems in the field crop rotation. The high stability index (0.96–1.00) of thousand grain weight formation under growing both varieties indicates a slight influence of weather conditions of the growing season. Thus, in 2020 this figure increased from 37.1 to 38.3 g, and in 2021 – from 37.2 to 39.1 g. In Rino variety, thousand grain weight was significantly higher than in KWS Emil variety by 16–17 %. The application of 75 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizers increased it from 43.2 g to 43.6–43.8 g or only by 1 %, and at a double dose – to 44.8–45.2 g, or by 4–5 %. The efficiency of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers was higher than the cultivation of KWS Emil, and lower in Rino. The grain unit of both soft winter wheat varieties increased both on average and over the years of research with a stability index of 0.98–1.00. Thus, on average over two years of research, it increased in KWS Emil variety from 771 to 779–789 g/l or 1–2 % depending on the fertilizer system. Rino grain had 6% more grain unit compared to KWS Emil. On average, it increased from 820 to 831–838 g/l per fertilizer application or only by 1–2 %. Conclusions. It is established that the physico-chemical properties of grain change depending on the fertilizer system, variety and weather conditions of the growing season. Rino grain has higher physico-chemical properties. Thus, thousand grain weight increases from 43.2 to 43.6–45.2 g, grain unit – from 820 to 831–838 g/l, protein content – from 14.4 to 15.4–16.4 %, depending on the fertilizer system, hardness type – hard-grained. In KWS Emil variety, thousand grain weight increases from 37.2 to 38.3–38.5 g, grain unit – from 771 to 779–789 g/l, protein content – from 11.7 to 12.3–13.7 % depending on the fertilizer system, hardness type – soft-grained.

Abstract:
The effects of incident shock strength on the mixing transition in the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) are experimentally investigated using simultaneous density–velocity measurements. This effort uses a shock with an incident Mach number of 1.9, in concert with previous work at Mach 1.55 (Mohaghar et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 831, 2017 pp. 779–825) where each case is followed by a reshock wave. Single- and multi-mode interfaces are used to quantify the effect of initial conditions on the evolution of the RMI. The interface between light and heavy gases ($\text{N}_{2}/\text{CO}_{2}$, Atwood number, $A\approx 0.22$; amplitude to wavelength ratio of 0.088) is created in an inclined shock tube at $80^{\circ }$ relative to the horizontal, resulting in a predominantly single-mode perturbation. To investigate the effects of initial perturbations on the mixing transition, a multi-mode inclined interface is also created via shear and buoyancy superposed on the dominant inclined perturbation. The evolution of mixing is investigated via the density fields by computing mixed mass and mixed-mass thickness, along with mixing width, mixedness and the density self-correlation (DSC). It is shown that the amount of mixing is dependent on both initial conditions and incident shock Mach number. Evolution of the density self-correlation is discussed and the relative importance of different DSC terms is shown through fields and spanwise-averaged profiles. The localized distribution of vorticity and the development of roll-up features in the flow are studied through the evolution of interface wrinkling and length of the interface edge, which indicate that the vorticity concentration shows a strong dependence on the Mach number. The contribution of different terms in the Favre-averaged Reynolds stress is shown, and while the mean density-velocity fluctuation correlation term, $\langle \unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\rangle \langle u_{i}^{\prime }u_{j}^{\prime }\rangle$, is dominant, a high dependency on the initial condition and reshock is observed for the turbulent mass-flux term. Mixing transition is analysed through two criteria: the Reynolds number (Dimotakis, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 409, 2000, pp. 69–98) for mixing transition and Zhou (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 14 (8), 2007, 082701 for minimum state) and the time-dependent length scales (Robey et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 10 (3), 2003, 614622; Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 67 (5), 2003, 056305). The Reynolds number threshold is surpassed in all cases after reshock. In addition, the Reynolds number is around the threshold range for the multi-mode, high Mach number case ($M\sim 1.9$) before reshock. However, the time-dependent length-scale threshold is surpassed by all cases only at the latest time after reshock, while all cases at early times after reshock and the high Mach number case at the latest time before reshock fall around the threshold. The scaling analysis of the turbulent kinetic energy spectra after reshock at the latest time, at which mixing transition analysis suggests that an inertial range has formed, indicates power scaling of $-1.8\pm 0.05$ for the low Mach number case and $-2.1\pm 0.1$ for the higher Mach number case. This could possibly be related to the high anisotropy observed in this flow resulting from strong, large-scale streamwise fluctuations produced by large-scale shear.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a key determinant of eligibility for many life-saving therapies in HFrEF. Recently, the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) provided new equations based on creatinine (CKD-EPIcr), cystatin C (CKD-EPIcys) or both (CKD-EPIcyscr) that do not include race. These new equations may reclassify individuals, irrespective of race, from one eGFR category to another, with implications for eligibility for HFrEF treatments. Purpose To assess the difference between eGFR estimation using the 2021 CKD-EPIcyscr equation and the 2009 CKD-EPIcr and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study (MDRD)-4 equations which are still standard in many European laboratories. Methods We included patients from PARADIGM-HF with cystatin C and creatinine values available at the time of randomization. For each patient, baseline eGFRs were calculated using the 3 equations described. Our focus was on patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages III–V. Results Overall, 1910 patients were eligible. Mean age was 67.3 (10.1) year and 385 (18.7%) were female. Using 2009 CKD-EPIcr, 779 patients were in CKD stages 3–5, of which 233 (30%) were reclassified to a better CKD stage (higher eGFR) with the 2021 CKD-EPIcyscr equation (Table 1). Similar reclassification was seen when comparing MDRD-4 with the 2021 CKD-EPIcyscr equation: 277 (33%) of 831 patients in CKD stages 3–5 were reclassified to a better CKD stage (Figure 1). Conclusions The 2021 CKD-EPIcyscr equation favourably reclassified CKD stage in a large percentage of patients with HFrEF and a low eGFR, potentially increasing the proportion of these patients considered eligible for guideline-recommended therapies. Abstract:
Abstract Background U.S. laboratories are increasingly using a two-step algorithm to diagnose Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) that starts with a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), and if positive, reflexes to a toxin enzyme immunoassay. Here only a NAAT+/toxin+ result is reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) as a CDI laboratory-identified (LabID) event, but limited data suggest that NAAT+/toxin- results may also be considered CDI by clinicians. To explore this discrepancy, we compared the characteristics and treatment of NAAT+/toxin- and NAAT+/toxin+ patients. Methods CDC’s Emerging Infections Program (EIP) conducts population-based CDI surveillance. A case was defined as a positive C. difficile test in a person aged ≥1 year with no positive tests in the prior 8 weeks. We included cases detected by this two-step algorithm in 5 EIP sites during 2018–2020 that underwent a full chart review. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for age, sex, race, comorbidities, epidemiologic classification, and CDI therapy were used to compare CDI-related complications (i.e., toxic megacolon, ileus, colectomy, or intensive-care unit stay) and recurrence between the two groups. Results Of 1250 NAAT+ cases, 897 (72%) were toxin- and 353 (28%) were toxin+. Lower percentages of toxin- versus toxin+ cases were aged ≥65 years (42% vs 58%; P< 0.0001), had diarrhea (779/831 [94%] vs 329/338 [97%]; P=0.01), or had white blood cell counts ≥15,000 cells/μL (183/811 [23%] vs 132/321 [42%]; P< 0.0001). CDI therapy was given to 683/882 (77%) toxin- versus 338/349 (97%) toxin+ cases (P< 0.0001). In multivariable analysis, toxin- status was protective for recurrence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.32–0.74) but not for CDI-related complications (aOR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.64–1.56). Conclusion NAAT+/toxin- cases were less likely to have recurrence but were as likely to have CDI-related complications as NAAT+/toxin+ cases. More than twice as many potentially unreported NAAT+/toxin- cases were treated than the number of reported NAAT+/toxin+ treated cases. Use of this two-step algorithm likely results in underreporting of treated CDI cases to NHSN. Disclosures Scott Fridkin, MD, Pfizer: Grant/Research Support Dale N.
