Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to the study of two problems related to the theory of control of PDE.In a first time, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the one-dimensional viscoelastic von Kàrmàn system with delay. We prove that the latter system is well-posed in a suitable functional space using the Faedo-Galerkin method. To establish our stability result, we employ the Lyapunov method by using a suitable candidate functional. In a second time, we study the problem of boundary controllability and stabilization for the one-dimensional wave equation in non-cylindrical domains. For the controllability, one uses the characteristics method to build the unique solution. We will then be able to give the explicit expression of the controls for which the system reaches the equilibrium point after a certain time. Moreover, we show that this time is optimal. For the stabilization, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that guarantees the energy decay at any desired rate. In addition, the influences of the domain geometry and time-dependent feedback are clarified. In a third time, we study the boundary controllability of two coupled one-dimensional wave equations with first-order coupling terms with coefficients depending on space and time. We give a necessary and sufficient conditions for both exact controllability in high frequency in the general case and for the unique continuation in the cascade case

McFadden, Yvonne. "Creating a modern home : homeowners in post-war suburban Glasgow, 1945-1975." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how married couples bought and created a modern home for their families in suburban Glasgow between 1945-1975. New homeowners were on the cusp of the middle-classes, buying in a climate of renters. As they progressed through the family lifecycle women’s return to work meant they became more comfortably ensconced within the middle-classes. Engaged with a process of homemaking through consumption and labour, couples transformed their houses into homes that reflected themselves and their social status. The interior of the home was focused on as a site of social relations. Marriage in the suburbs was one of collaboration as each partner performed distinct gender roles. The idea of a shared home was investigated and the story of ‘we’ rather than ‘I’ emerged from both testimony and contemporary literature. This thesis considers decision-making, labour and leisure to show the ways in which experiences of home were gendered. What emerged was that women’s work as everyday and mundane was overlooked and undervalued while husband’s extraordinary contributions in the form of DIY came to the fore. The impact of wider culture intruded upon the ‘private’ home as we see they ways in which the position of women in society influences their relationship to the home and their family. In the suburbs of post-war Glasgow women largely left the workforce to stay at home with their children. Mothers popped in and out of each other houses for tea and a blether, creating a homosocial network that was sociable and supportive unique to this time in their lives and to this historical context. Daily life was negotiated within the walls of the modern home. The inter-war suburbs of Glasgow needed modernising to post-war standards of modern living. ‘Modern’ was both an aesthetic and an engagement with new technologies within the house. Both middle and working-class practices for room use were found through the keeping of a ‘good’ or best room and the determination of couples to eat in their small kitchenettes. As couples updated their kitchen, the fitted kitchen revealed contemporary notions of modern décor, as kitchens became bright yellow with blue Formica worktops. The modern home was the evolution of existing ideas of modern combined with new standards of living. As Glasgow homeowners constructed their modern home what became evident was that this was a shared process and as a couple they placed their children central to all aspects of their lives to create not only a modern home, but that this was first and foremost a family home.

Bell, A. P. "Finite element analysis of shear band failure with particular reference to circular plate impact." Thesis, City University London, 1989. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of the numerical simulation of the shear band or 'plugging' mode of failure in metallic solids. Particular reference is made to the normal impact between blunt projectiles and circular plates of thin to intermediate thickness. The thesis presents a two dimensional axisymmetric and plane strain finite element computer program related to the Lagrangian reference frame. A four node element with one point quadrature and associated stabilisation is utilised, and is shown to be superior to standard isoparametric implementations when applied within an explicit time integration scheme. Finite deformation capabilities are included, together with material nonlinearity in the form of a von Mises elastic-plastic model. The algorithms used in this work are dictated to a large degree by the emphasis which is placed upon efficiency, although this is not at the expense of accuracy. Numerical stability in the presence of severe stress gradients is achieved through the use of an artificial viscosity scheme. The impact conditions along the contacting interface are governed by the use of a penalty-based slideline technique which permits arbitrarily large relative deformations of the contact surfaces. With the foregoing numerical basis, the penalty-based slideline technique has been extended in this work to facilitate the discrete modelling of the fracture process present during plugging. The computational model has been embedded within the LUSAS finite element system which provides extensive pre and post processing facilities. A detailed discussion of the problems involved in the solution of high velocity impact calculations is given, together with an assessment of the effects of several material related parameters on the solution. several numerical comparisons with experimental evidence are also performed to indicate the effectiveness of the method. Finally, relevant conclusions have been made and suggestions for further study are provided.

Alzeyadi, Ali T. K. "An experimental investigation into the efficiency of filter materials for phosphate removal from wastewater." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2017. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients, which significantly influences the extraordinary growth of algae. Consequently, this leads to eutrophication of aquatic life. Eutrophication of water bodies due to phosphorus coming from wastewater is a serious problem. Therefore, additional work on many wastewater treatment plants is required in order to meet the required standards, particularly in relation to nutrient removal. Recently, continuous upflow filters CoUFs have been found to be a suitable technology for upgrading or expanding the wastewater treatment plants. On the other hand, investigation of different sorts of low-cost materials has been shown to be an attractive solution as phosphate sorbent materials PSMs, which represents a sustainable solution based on economical and environmental factors. This PhD study seeks to determine materials that are capable of removing phosphate from wastewater at tertiary treatment within a short time when they are packed in CoUFs. In order to select the suitable PSMs a comprehensive study has been conducted to describe their physical and chemical characteristics, affinity to retain orthophosphate (phosphate) and bonding time. This work was carried out through subjecting these materials to examinations such as scanning electron microscopy SEM and X-ray fluorescence analysis XRF to identify their characteristics, and conducting a batch test and constructing a lab-scale upflow filter to investigate the filter materials’ affinity to phosphate. Based on the phosphate removal efficiency and characteristics of selected materials an innovative and sustainable coating technology has been proposed to introduce a new type of filter material capable of removing phosphate effectively. Filtration materials coated with metallic oxides are presented as a good method for phosphate sorption. However, most of the researchers utilize chemicals as a source of metallic oxides and heating process to set the chemicals over the filtration materials. In this study, the method of creating new filter media involves coating a solid material via waste materials containing metallic oxides; the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was utilized as a binder for the mixture materials. Water is the factor which is responsible for activating the OPC. All factors have been subjected to an optimization process. The results revealed that the limestone particles coated by furnace bottom ash (FBA) indicated a high capacity for phosphate sorption and possibility of regenerating their efficiency. In conclusion, this study introduces a new approach regarding creating and developing the characteristics of the filter media which fit the sustainability requirements.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating on 3D Computer Vision, a research topic which is gathering even increasing attention thanks to the more and more widespread availability of affordable 3D visual sensor, such as, in particular consumer grade RGB-D cameras. The contribution of this dissertation is twofold. First, the work addresses how to compactly represent the content of images acquired with RGB-D cameras. Second, the thesis focuses on 3D Reconstruction, key issue to efficiently populate the databases of 3D models deployed in object/category recognition scenarios. As 3D Registration plays a fundamental role in 3D Reconstruction, the former part of the thesis proposes a pipeline for coarse registration of point clouds that is entirely based on the computation of 3D Local Reference Frames (LRF). Unlike related work in literature, we also propose a comprehensive experimental evaluation based on diverse kinds of data (such as those acquired by laser scanners, RGB-D and stereo cameras) as well as on quantitative comparison with respect to three other methods. Driven by the ever-lower costs and growing distribution of 3D sensing devices, we expect broad-scale integration of depth sensing into mobile devices to be forthcoming. Accordingly, the thesis investigates on merging appearance and shape information for Mobile Visual Search and focuses on encoding RGB-D images in compact binary codes. An extensive experimental analysis on three state-of-the-art datasets, addressing both category and instance recognition scenarios, has led to the development of an RGB-D search engine architecture that can attain high recognition rates with peculiarly moderate bandwidth requirements. Our experiments also include a comparison with the CDVS (Compact Descriptors for Visual Search) pipeline, candidate to become part of the MPEG-7 standard.

This thesis documents the design and implementation of a game controller glove that employs optical tracking technology to detect movement of the hand and fingers. The vision algorithm captures an image from a webcam in real-time and determines the centroids of colored sections on a glove worn by the player; assigning a distinctive identifier for each section which is associated with a 3D model retrieved from a preexisting library. A Vivitouch artificial muscle module is also mounted to the top of the glove to provide vibratory haptic feedback to the user. The system has been user tested and a number of potential use scenarios have been conceived for integration of the controller in various gaming applications.

Abstract:
Information systems belonging to the DoD and U.S. Army experience cyber attacks on a daily basis. Increasingly, these attacks are targeting popular third-party applications, instead of focusing on vulnerabilities in Microsoft software. The DoD responded to this threat by adopting Citadel Hercules, which did not find a willing audience with the U.S. Army. Instead, the Army adopted Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS), followed by System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 to meet this threat. After more than five years, the rollout of SCCM to all organizations within the U.S. Army is still incomplete. This study provides an overview of the threats facing U.S. Army information systems and looks at how the Army has addressed this challenge in the past. Next, the study takes a system engineering approach to identifying an optimal tool for mitigating third-party vulnerabilities and suggests potential alternatives to SCCM. In addition, the study utilizes a cost benefit analysis approach to aid in evaluating the potential Return on Investment (ROI) provided by each tool. The purpose of this study is to answer the question What is the most optimal solution for mitigating vulnerabilities in third-party applications on U.S. Army information systems

Abstract:
This work describes the evolution cf electronic warfare equipment and techniques in the USA, from the first instance of radio jamming in that country in 1901 until the end of World War II in 1945. It begins with a review of early work on telegraph, radio and radar systems throughout the world, and countermeasures used during trials or in combat prior to World War II. Immediately after the USA ertered the conflict in 1941, the Radio Research Laboratory was set up near Boston to develop radio countermeasures equipment for the US armed forces. The organisation rapidly outgrew the capacity of a angle laboratory and in October 1942 Division 15 of the National Defense Research Committee was formed, to co-ordinate US work on countermeasures. The activities of RRL and Division 15 are described in detail, using cortemporary records and accounts from participants. Radar jammers developed by Divison 15 were first used in action in July 1943 during the invason of Sicily, and went on to play important roles in support amphibious landings and strategic bombing operations in the European and Pacific theatres of operations. The jamming devices and tactics employed, the enemy attempts to develop counter-countermeasures and the US moves to counter these counters are all described in detail. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the various types of jamming, based on post-war interrogation of German and Japanese serving officers and technical personnel. Appendices give technical details of the countermeasures devices produced in the USA during World War II, and the development of radar and radar countermeasures in Germany and Japan.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Includes bibliography.
This study seeks to identify discourses of professionalism and the production of Teachers' professional identity in the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Act of 2000. These identifies are located in the context of their social impact on, and in the actualisalion of the political roles of teachers in post-apartheid South Africa. Central to the study is the conceptualisation that discourses coiistruct identities. The research methodology is derived from Ian Parker's approach to discourse analysis, which is premised to an extent on post-structruralist thought. The author summarises Parker's 'steps' to effect a discourse analysis, and constructs a set of five analytic tools with which no analyse the SACE Act of2000. The study's main finding is that two discursive frames constitute the roles of the post-apartheid teacher in South Africa. The first is a bureaucratic discourse of marketisation that defines a role for teachers in preparing students for participation in a global market economy. A second discourse which is identified in the study is a democratic professional discourse, which delineates a critical, independent professional role for teachers. The study suggests that the two teacher identities are in tension. The two identities are complex and are simultaneously constructed and actualised.

Abstract:

South Africa continues to experience one of the highest crime rates in the world. Crime is unevenly distributed, and the police are not trusted by the majority of citizens. The power and responsibility for policing lies with the national government, through South Africa’s negotiated constitutional framework. Only a limited form of policing under local government, severely constrained by onerous requirements, is permitted in the legislative framework. Such centralisation of policing in federal states is theorised to be necessary to avoid partisan policing and armed separatism; to prevent local capture of police by local politicians; to ensure uniformity, equity and democratic change, and to ensure equitable outcomes; and to bring efficiencies of scale to policing.

Abstract:
This paper aims to present the main characteristics of the cruise industry market, focusing in particular on the case of the Port of Leixões. To achieve this goal, innitilally we analyzed some studies that characterize the evolution of supply and demand of the cruise market, as well as the profile, motivations and behavior in travel and in ports of call of cruise tourists. We analyze the evolution of the cruise industry, considering the great turning point that was the year 1958, the last year that more passengers crossed the North Atlantic by ship than by plane (Ward, 2010). We study the development of the cruise industry, the main markets and the evolution of the concept of cruising, the supply and the services provided aboard. We consider the cruise industry in Europe, in the two traditional areas to have a cruise (the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, particularly the Baltic Sea Region) and in the emerging Atlantic region of Europe, until recently seen only as a connection point between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe (Wild, 2011). We consider the impact that this change in the European cruise itineraries may have to Portuguese Ports where, in 2010, more than 1 million cruise tourists passed by (APL, 2011). This analysis focuses on the case of the Port of Leixões, considering the construction of the new cruise terminal in this port. We conducted an empirical study with passengers whoose cruise ship stopped in Port of Leixões in August in 2010, with the objective of characterizing the cruise tourists in this port. The primary data from these cruise tourists was collected through a questionnaire applied to 173 tourists, and was conducted in the passenger station of the Port of Leixões.Based on the results we could conclude that the average age of a cruise tourist that visit Porto is 61,31 years, most of them married (70,93%), with an high degree of education (73,41 %), being the most of them (57,14%) from the United Kingdom. The main motivations to make the cruise were experiencing other cultures and being in a different environment. 83,9% of respondents had attended at least one cruise before, and 81,4% were visiting Porto for the first time. 64% of respondents choose a tour on the destination Porto/Northern Portugal. The most positive factor of the visit was the friendliness of the people. We have found that the longer the duration of the visit, the biggest the degree of satisfaction with destination Porto/Northern Portugal. Each visitor spent on average 56,03€ during the visit.

Oswald, Hailey A. "A Content Analysis of Scientific Practices in a Fourth-Grade Commercial Literacy Program." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7410.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing science literacy among all students is a longstanding goal of science education. The most recent national attempt to improve science education, and thereby increase science literacy, came in the form of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards, which include 3 dimensions: scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas. The purpose of this content analysis was to examine the alignment between 4 of the scientific practices (Asking Questions; Constructing Explanations; Engaging in Argument from Evidence; and Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information) and a widely used commercial literacy program, Reading Wonders, with the goal of beginning an investigation into whether or not general literacy instruction might be useful in developing science literacy. The science texts and their accompanying recommended instruction in 4th grade Wonders were coded and analyzed using categories derived from the key features of each scientific practice. Findings showed partial, although most often minimal, alignment between Wonders and each of the four practices. Scientific questions were present in Wonders, but rarely asked by students. The analyzed texts included some explanations of how or why scientific phenomena occur, but they were rarely supported by evidence. Similarly, in terms of scientific argument, the texts included some opportunities for students to observe claims being made and supported and to make and support their own claims, but these claims were rarely linked to disciplinary core ideas. Finally, Wonders offered many opportunities for students to observe and/or engage in Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information. However, these opportunities mainly involved obtaining information from a single traditional print text and then summarizing it. Teachers who are hoping to use Wonders to help students understand scientific practices should be aware that such integration will require additional planning and instruction. Alignment between Wonders and these four practices was minimal and rarely authentic to the discipline of science. Future research should continue the investigation this study began, thereby increasing generalizability, by expanding the focus to include other elementary grade levels, as well as other commercial literacy programs.

Johnson, William J. "The Effect of Chemical Composition of Blast-Furnace Slag on Compressive Strength and Durability Properties of Mortar Specimens." Scholar Commons, 2017. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7410.

Full text
Abstract:
In an effort to make structures more sustainable and durable, supplementary cementitious materials are often used to replace cement. Ground granulated blast furnace slag, for instance, is an industrial by-product of iron refinement and is frequently used in concrete mixture design to not only reduce cost, but also increase later-age strength as well as durability. However, published literature indicates that slags with a high alumina content may have a detrimental effect when concrete is exposed to a sulfate environment. ASTM standard C989 does not suggest any information or guidelines regarding using slags with an alumina content between 11-18%. Therefore, the objective of this study was to fill in the gap of this standard by studying slags of variable alumina content as high as 16 percent. This study presents data collected for compressive strengths of mortar cubes exposed to lime and 5 percent sodium sulfate solution at ages of 7, 28, 91, and 182 days from the date of mixing as well as expansion data for mortar bar specimens exposed to 5 percent sodium sulfate solution up to 120 days. Slag replacement levels used here were 0, 30, 50, and 70%. Mortar bar specimens showing deterioration were analyzed using x-ray diffraction coupled with Rietveld refinement to assess the mechanism of deterioration. Cubes were stored in lime and sulfate solutions abiding by ASTM C1012 in order to analyze the resistance to sulfate attack. Sulfate resistance was measured in terms of decalcification of the CSH gel as well as expansion. The results suggest using high alumina slags at a low percentage adversely affects sulfate resistance since the acquired strength at 182 days fell below that of 28 day strength, which is often used in the industry as the parameter which constitutes whether a mixture is adequate. It was also seen that increasing alumina content of the slag resulted in increased expansion. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the mechanism of deterioration, of the control as well as the blended mortar, is due to secondary gypsum and secondary ettringite formation. Therefore, it is recommended that slags having a high alumina content should be further analyzed in laboratory tests to examine their performance especially if concrete will be subjected to a sulfate environment during its service life.

Abstract:
This study was completed to better understand pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) populations found throughout Idaho. Antelope were studied in three separate and distinct study areas. The Big Desert, Camas Prairie, and Little Lost and Pahsimeroi valleys were all selected as study sites. Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) is concerned with current pronghorn populations found throughout Idaho. Pronghorn are a valued big game species found in Idaho. Increasing pronghorn populations in Idaho is a focus of IDFG. We captured and VHF-collared pronghorn fawns found in our three study areas. Fawns were monitored daily with telemetry equipment for survival. Field necropsies were performed to determine cause of death for each fawn. We found that fawns across Idaho had acceptable survival rates compared to previous studies conducted on pronghorn. The highest cause of mortality on fawns was coyotes (Canis latrans). Other predators on pronghorn fawns were bobcats (Lynx rufus), golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), and black bear (Ursus americanus). We found that fawns radio-collared with a higher BMI (body mass index) were more likely to survive. We examined other relationships that could have an effect on fawn survival. Rabbits (Lepus californicus, Lepus townsendii Sylvilagus nuttallii, Brachylagus idahoensis, Lepus americanu) and ground squirrels (Urocitellus armatus, Urocitellus mollis, Urocitellus elegans, Urocitellus columbianus) were examined to see if there population numbers had an effect on pronghorn fawn survival. We found a relationship between rabbit density and fawn survival, as rabbit density increased pronghorn fawn survival increased. Ground squirrel density was found to have no effect. Coyote density was studied to see if coyote density effected pronghorn survival. No relationship was found between coyote density and pronghorn fawn survival. Habitat quality can impact animal populations. We examined habitat variables that could affect pronghorn fawn survival. NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) was examined and we found no correlation in this study. Pronghorn fecal samples were collected and analyzed at a laboratory to look for diet quality correlation to pronghorn survival. We found a correlation between diet quality (DAPA) and pronghorn fawn survival. Diet quality can be linked to habitat quality, as habitat quality increases so does pronghorn fawn survival. Habitat quality, rabbits, and a fawn’s BMI all were linked to increased fawn survival. We recommend wildlife managers create and increase pronghorn habitat when possible to produce better pronghorn fawn survival.

Abstract:
In 2009, a local physician assistant (PA) program lost accreditation due to decreased success in licensure pass rates on the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination (PANCE). In response, the program's admissions committee required additional metrics for accepting quality candidates more likely to pass the licensure examination on the first attempt. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of these metrics, specifically the relationship between demographics, prerequisite admission requirements, and PANCE success. The theoretical framework and conceptual model shaping this study was Bordage's illumination and magnify framework and Swail's geometric model of student persistence and achievement. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantiative study was to investigate the relationhip between the demographic variables, preadmission requirements, and their relationship to predict first-time PANCE success. Using archival data, total sampling (N = 107) included all students who took the PANCE from 2012 to 2016. Binary logistic regression results showed that The Graduate Record Examination quantitative reasoning score was statistically significant (p < .01), and a poor predictor of success, secondary to not having a significant effect on the odds of observing PANCE success. The overall results did not provide admission predictors of student success on the first-time attempt to pass PANCE. The study has significance for social change in the area of admissions policy development that supports a nonbiased process for the identification and selection of quality PA candidates.

Abstract:

The work is dealing with the research of the socio-economic structures in the Bolivian society, which as a result of historical evolution embody distinct anomalies with an implication into the political sphere. The goal of the work is to offer a material on the basis of which it will be possible to detect and understand those inner tensions and to orientate ourselves in the present turbulent environment which the Bolivian society is currently undergoing. The fore theme is the approach of these processes in the light of the ongoing "indigenous revolution" conducted by the platform MAS led by Evo Morales. The author is using a synthetic method, when first he concentrates on the individual problematic fields and later summarizes, connects and synthetically implies concrete conclusions. The very results of the work can be used by those interested in the study of Bolivia for economical, sociological and political purposes or even by economic entities planning an entrance into the Bolivian environment. In the work the author has used his personal experience and pieces of knowledge gained during his three months staying in Bolivia as well as other information obtained from broad currently accessible scientific publications, documents ant further up-to-date resources.

This study aimed to understand the perception of the nursing staff regarding patient autonomy terminally ill. This is a survey of qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approach was made with twenty three professional nursing team (auxiliary nursing, nursing technicians and nurses Medical Clinic I), University Hospital, Federal University of Santa Maria. For the production of the semi driven data, recorded between September 2013 and October was used. The ethical dimension N. 466/2012 was respected according to the National Council of Health. After collection, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed by content analysis. Emerged from the interviews, four categories: transience of autonomy to heteronomy, communication of diagnosis, early policy of the will: uncertainties in its implementation; life support: the suffering of the inseparability patient care practices. We conclude that the terminal patient hospitalized at the Medical Clinic I have little autonomy over themselves, being owned by the medical decision-making power and especially the family. It is hoped that this research generates an improvement on the autonomy of the terminally ill patient, in order to generate ideas and actions in teaching and nursing.

Carbone nanotubes (CNT) have been widely investigated both experimentally and theoretically because their remarkable geometry and physical-chemical properties, in regard especially of their possible applications as either reactors or catalysts of physical and chemical processes. This study computationally investigated the interaction between the symmetry cavity of chiral nanotubes and the symmetry of chiral molecules. It was selected CNT cavities capable of comporting peptides made of twenty amino acids residues or more and the simulations have been performed with CNTpeptide interaction in vacuum and in implicit solvent (water). Simulations of the interaction of CNT cavity with γ-valerolactone (GVL) racemic mixture were also performed, since they made it possible to evaluate the capacity of being enriched with one of the enantiomers beared by the chiral cavity when merged in liquid. The CNT-peptide interaction models demonstrated that there is competition of interactions, and the self-stabilization caused by strong intramolecular forces reduces the capacity of these peptides to interact selectively with the cavity, what makes it difficult to affirm, until present, whether there is or not cavity sensitivity to some of the isomers. Although the CNT-GVL model of energies interaction did not show selectivity capacity, the analysis of the radial distribution functions curves of GVL pairs of isomers in relation to the CNT center of masses and in relation to the CNT atoms truly demonstrate that there is chiral enrichment capacity in the case of these cavities. Generally, it was verified that the chiral recognition and enrichment are stemmed of subtle interactions, therefore there is still the necessity of expanding and deepening these investigations since the CNT are very promising chiral cavities.

Xystrou, Maria N. "A comparison of the socio-psycho-educational and personality characteristics of learning disabled and dyslexic children with normal controls." Thesis, Brunel University, 2004. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7410.

Abstract:
Introduction: LD-dyslexic children experience more social isolation, social exclusion, loneliness less access to social goods -i. e. in education, employment, welfare, etc. (Bryan & Bryan, 1990). Students with learning disorders view themselves as more lonely and report lower levels of the sense of coherence than the average achieving pupils. (Wiener, 1998). Their reading and other learning problems are likely to continue into adulthood, with destructive effects on their feelings of self worth, personal relationships and job opportunities. Last but not least, learning disabilities have been associated with juvenile delinquency. A variety of theories concerning this purported causal relationship have been proposed. Although the assumption that learning disability plays a primary role in a delinquent outcome, remains open to question. Aim: This study examined whether: 1) There is a significant correlation between the socio-psycho-educational- environmental problems and learning disabilities. 2) They can be differentiated from their normal controls on the basis of their psycho-socio-educational profile. Material: The parents of normal controls participating in the study were individually given a questionnaire to complete about their children's reactions and social behaviour. The dyslexic children's parents had already filled in an extended questionnaire that was especially developed by Professor G. Pavlidis for students with Learning Difficulties and Dyslexia. Subiects: Two hundred and twenty seven (227 - 122 boys and 104 girls) children and their parents, took part in this research. The children attended grades 3 through 6. The sample consisted of a hundred and thirty six (136) normal controls -57 boys and 78 girls, and ninety one (91) dyslexics and learning disabled children -65 boys and 26 girls-drawn from the Dyslexia and I. Q. Center, where they were diagnosed by Prof. Pavlidis. The controls were indentified according to their parents answers who had filled in the Pavlidis Questionnaire that was mentioned above. (LD children had similar characteristics as the dyslexics, however they did not fulfil all the criteria to be classified as dyslexics. For instance, for a child to be diagnosed as dyslexic it is necessary to fall significantly behind in reading. Our LD child had similar problems with dyslexic and ADHD in their written expression etc but their reading was not as bad). The subjects' selection as well as their testing took place according to standard ethics and after the necessary permissions were received and the appropriate informed consents were filled out. Results: The LD-dyslexic children's psycho-socio-educational characteristics were found to be significantly different worse than those of the normal controls of the same age. In fact, the two groups different so much that on the basis of their psycho-socio-educational profile the Discriminant Analysis (DA) successfully classified the two groups with accuracy of 94,6%. The LD-dyslexic group was correctly identified with 97,6% while the normal controls were classified with 93,7% accuracy. Conclusions: The very high discrimination accuracy between the two groups raises the possibility to use the Pavlidis Questionnaire as a quick, easy to administer, inexpensive and highly accurate screening tool for children with suspected LD-dyslexia. This potential will be of particular importance to countries like Greece, where only few and very limited possibilities exist within the educational system for the diagnosis of the LD-dyslexic children. However, one has to be cautions to the strong possibility not to be able to discriminate between specific LD-dyslexics and children with general learning retardation, whichQ may have very different etiology, e.g. due to low IQ.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been known for some time that warped extra dimensions offer a potential explanation of the large hierarchy that exists between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale. The majority of this work has focused on a five dimensional slice of AdS space. This thesis attempts to address the question, what possible spaces offer phenomenologically viable resolutions to this gauge hierarchy problem. In order for a space to offer a potential resolution to the hierarchy problem two conditions must be met: Firstly one should be able to demonstrate that the space can be stabilised such that a small effective electroweak scale (or large effective Planck scale) can be obtained. Secondly one must demonstrate that the space allows for a Kaluza Klein (KK) scale that is small enough such that one does not reintroduce a hierarchy in the effective theory. Here we focus on the second condition and examine the constraints, on the KK scale, coming from corrections to electroweak observables and flavour physics which arise when gauge fields propagate in an additional dimension. We study a large class of possible spaces of different geometries and dimensionalities. In five dimensions it is found that such constraints are generically large. In more than five dimensions it is found that a significant proportion of such spaces suffer from either a high density of KK modes or alternatively strongly coupled KK fields. The latter would not offer viable resolutions to the hierarchy problem. Models in which the Higgs propagates in the bulk are also studied, in the context of models with a ‘soft wall' and it is found these have significantly reduced constraints from flavour physics as well as a notion of a minimum fermion mass.

This thesis is about pedagogical practices from a perspective of Pedagogy of the Linguistic Variation. It aims to offer concreteness to the concept of Pedagogy of the Linguistic Variation by means of the record and the analysis of pedagogical practices assumed by a professor-researcher with a view to stimulate the debate about language teaching and learning, including alternatives for the respect and the appreciation of multilingualism and linguistic diversity. The research is based on concepts of linguistic variation and literacy projects. A socio-constructivist philosophical conception is assumed and a qualitative methodology is adopted. In this sense the construction of a Pedagogy of the Linguistic Variation is approached by means of an action research, in which the researcher plans, implements and evaluates changes in his own pedagogical practices. During the whole academic year, as the professor of Portuguese Language and Brazilian Literature discipline in a Federal Institute that is in Northern Rio Grande do Sul, the researcher implemented practices that were recorded by means of the maintenance of a field notebook and of the cataloging of documents (class planning, students’ texts and assignments). At the end of the academic year, with the purpose of giving voice to students, focus groups were formed. These groups discussed the Portuguese Language classes during the academic year and the students’ conception of Linguistic Variation. The triangulation of data allowed to analyze the pedagogical practices that were adopted, which turned out very profitable in the sense of constructing positive meanings for the Linguistic Variation, identifying it with a socio-cultural wealth. The adopted practices also turned out important for the recognition and appreciation of the multilingualism, understood as relevant for the repercussion of different social voices. It is concluded that the Pedagogy of the Linguistic Variation has a great potential to foment a debate about Linguistic Education, including an effort to discuss the multilingualism and the linguistic diversity in Portuguese Language class.

Hosie, Louise Christine. "Characterisation of CMV CD8+T-cell memory-inflation to immediate early HLA-C restricted targets and the potential of CMV as a vaccine vector for cancer therapy." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
CMV CD8+T-cell memory-inflation can occupy up to 50% of the total CD8+ T cell pool. Studies using an MHC class I immunevasion-deleted strain revealed novel peptide-epitopes across the virus genome both in-frame and translated in a non-canonical manner. This study functionally and phenotypically characterised CD8+T-cells responding to these CMV-derived epitopes with age. They were found to be frequent component of the in vivo repertoire dedicated towards HCMV during latency. A HLA-Cw*0702-restricted immunodominant CD8+T-cell response that accumulated within elderly donors was identified to reach 32% of the total CD8+T-cell pool producing IFN-γ/TNF-α. Subsequently, HLA-Cw*0702-restricted memory-inflation was observed to a further two peptides dominating the CD8+T-cell memory compartment. HLA-Cw*0702 CD8+T-cells demonstrated a TEMRA phenotype - CD45RA+/CD27-/CD28-/CCR7-/perforinhigh/granzymeBhigh - and represented promising candidates for inclusion in HSCT adoptive immunotherapies. Consequently, the global HCMV-specific CD8+T-cell response is being vastly underestimated by restricting studies to; in-frame translation products, HLA-A/-B-restricted peptide-epitopes and utilising WT-strains to characterise novel CD8+T-cell targets. Lastly, understanding why particular HCMV antigens induce inflationary CD8+T-cells will facilitate harnessing HCMV as a cancer therapy. In an attempt to direct HCMV-mediated inflationary responses towards malignancies, a HCMV-based vaccine vector expressing the NYESO1 CTAg was generated. Preliminary results indicate the immunogenicity of such a vaccine in vitro.

A antracnose [Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz). Sacc.] _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Anthracnose [Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz). Sacc.] is one of the most important post-harvest diseases on guava fruits (Psidium guajava L.). Fungicides are constantly used to control this disease. Willing to reduce fungicide use on post-harvest fruits, the main objective of this study was the evaluation of phosphites, hot water, calcium chloride (CaCl2) and the combination of these methods on disease and on fruit quality [fresh mass loss (FML), pH, total of soluble solids (TSS), and titrable acidity (TA)] from conventional and organic system of production. The pathogen was isolated from infected field from Brazlândia/DF/Brazil, the same country, all experimental were harvested. Before the application of treatments in experiments, the fruit (stage 3-4 of maturation) were decontaminated in 10% alcohol (1 min), 1,0% sodium hypochlorite (1 min) and sterilized distilled water (1 min). The fruits were marked on three equidistant points in the median region and in the center of each mark an injury was made (2mm). Then, the fruits were inoculated (50μl of suspension 105 conidia / ml) and placed in humid chamber (23ºC; 24h; light 12h). Then, the treatments were applied and the fruit stored in incubator (23ºC; light 12h) for five to 10 days. Daily, the diameter of lesions, number of lesions and fruit maturity stage were evaluated. At the end of the evaluations, it was carried out a chemical and physical analysis of the fruits FML, TSS, pH, and TA. In the experiments performed with phosphite products the doses recommended by the manufacturers were applied: Phosphite Zn; Phosphite K; Phosphite Mg; Phosphite Ca and fungicide Carbendazim (Derosal 1mL/L). The fruits were dipped the in solutions of these products for 20minutes. Fruits used as test control were dipped in sterile distilled water for an equal period. Phosphite K was also tested in four doses (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0mL/L). In the tests with CaCl2, also, it was used four doses (1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5%) of the product. Trials with hydrothermal treatments were performed in water at 43, 45, 47, 49 and 51°C (6 min), and for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 min (47°C). Combinations of methods were also tested: phosphite K, hydrothermal (47ºC/10min) and CaCl2 (2.0%). Results showed that when phosphites were applied the diameter of lesions, on conventional fruits, was smaller compared to control. In organic fruits the reduction on diameter occurred with applications of phosphite Zn and phosphite K. On inoculated conventional fruits the number of naturally occurring was reduced with application of phosphite Mg, phosphite Zn and phosphite K. Nevertheless, the number of naturally occurring lesions conventional non-inoculated fruits was reduced in fruits treated with phosphite K, posphite Zn and phosphite Ca. All tested doses of phosphite K reduced the diameter of lesions on conventional and organic fruits when compared to the non-treated control. Treatments with CaCl2 (1 to 2,5%) showed reduction on diameter of lesions. Hydrothermal treatments reduced the size of lesions when compared to non-treated control. The number of lesions was reduced with water at 47º, 49° and 51ºC. Ten minutes (47oC) in hot water was the best time to reduce disease on fruit. Some treatments modified the analyzed fruit quality properties. Fruit treatments with phosphite, CaCl2 and hot water retarded fruit maturation.
