Abstract:
AbstractRibonuclease P (RNase P) is a ubiquitous and essential enzyme that endonucleolytically cleaves all tRNA precursors to produce the mature 5'-end. We have investigated the effect of synthetic rertinoids (all-trans retinoic acid, acitretin) and arotinoids (Ro 13-7410, Ro 15-0778, Ro, 13-6298 and Ro 15-1570) on RNase P activity isolated for the first time from normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK). All tested compounds but one (Ro 15-1570) revealed a dose-dependent inhibition of RNase P activity, indicating that they may have a direct effect on tRNA biogenesis. Detailed kinetic analysis showed that all retinoids behave as classic competitive inhibitors. On the basis of the Ki values Ro 13-7410 was found to be the strongest inhibitor among all compounds tested.

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to the study of two problems related to the theory of control of PDE.In a first time, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the one-dimensional viscoelastic von Kàrmàn system with delay. We prove that the latter system is well-posed in a suitable functional space using the Faedo-Galerkin method. To establish our stability result, we employ the Lyapunov method by using a suitable candidate functional. In a second time, we study the problem of boundary controllability and stabilization for the one-dimensional wave equation in non-cylindrical domains. For the controllability, one uses the characteristics method to build the unique solution. We will then be able to give the explicit expression of the controls for which the system reaches the equilibrium point after a certain time. Moreover, we show that this time is optimal. For the stabilization, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that guarantees the energy decay at any desired rate. In addition, the influences of the domain geometry and time-dependent feedback are clarified. In a third time, we study the boundary controllability of two coupled one-dimensional wave equations with first-order coupling terms with coefficients depending on space and time. We give a necessary and sufficient conditions for both exact controllability in high frequency in the general case and for the unique continuation in the cascade case

McFadden, Yvonne. "Creating a modern home : homeowners in post-war suburban Glasgow, 1945-1975." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how married couples bought and created a modern home for their families in suburban Glasgow between 1945-1975. New homeowners were on the cusp of the middle-classes, buying in a climate of renters. As they progressed through the family lifecycle women’s return to work meant they became more comfortably ensconced within the middle-classes. Engaged with a process of homemaking through consumption and labour, couples transformed their houses into homes that reflected themselves and their social status. The interior of the home was focused on as a site of social relations. Marriage in the suburbs was one of collaboration as each partner performed distinct gender roles. The idea of a shared home was investigated and the story of ‘we’ rather than ‘I’ emerged from both testimony and contemporary literature. This thesis considers decision-making, labour and leisure to show the ways in which experiences of home were gendered. What emerged was that women’s work as everyday and mundane was overlooked and undervalued while husband’s extraordinary contributions in the form of DIY came to the fore. The impact of wider culture intruded upon the ‘private’ home as we see they ways in which the position of women in society influences their relationship to the home and their family. In the suburbs of post-war Glasgow women largely left the workforce to stay at home with their children. Mothers popped in and out of each other houses for tea and a blether, creating a homosocial network that was sociable and supportive unique to this time in their lives and to this historical context. Daily life was negotiated within the walls of the modern home. The inter-war suburbs of Glasgow needed modernising to post-war standards of modern living. ‘Modern’ was both an aesthetic and an engagement with new technologies within the house. Both middle and working-class practices for room use were found through the keeping of a ‘good’ or best room and the determination of couples to eat in their small kitchenettes. As couples updated their kitchen, the fitted kitchen revealed contemporary notions of modern décor, as kitchens became bright yellow with blue Formica worktops. The modern home was the evolution of existing ideas of modern combined with new standards of living. As Glasgow homeowners constructed their modern home what became evident was that this was a shared process and as a couple they placed their children central to all aspects of their lives to create not only a modern home, but that this was first and foremost a family home.

Bell, A. P. "Finite element analysis of shear band failure with particular reference to circular plate impact." Thesis, City University London, 1989. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of the numerical simulation of the shear band or 'plugging' mode of failure in metallic solids. Particular reference is made to the normal impact between blunt projectiles and circular plates of thin to intermediate thickness. The thesis presents a two dimensional axisymmetric and plane strain finite element computer program related to the Lagrangian reference frame. A four node element with one point quadrature and associated stabilisation is utilised, and is shown to be superior to standard isoparametric implementations when applied within an explicit time integration scheme. Finite deformation capabilities are included, together with material nonlinearity in the form of a von Mises elastic-plastic model. The algorithms used in this work are dictated to a large degree by the emphasis which is placed upon efficiency, although this is not at the expense of accuracy. Numerical stability in the presence of severe stress gradients is achieved through the use of an artificial viscosity scheme. The impact conditions along the contacting interface are governed by the use of a penalty-based slideline technique which permits arbitrarily large relative deformations of the contact surfaces. With the foregoing numerical basis, the penalty-based slideline technique has been extended in this work to facilitate the discrete modelling of the fracture process present during plugging. The computational model has been embedded within the LUSAS finite element system which provides extensive pre and post processing facilities. A detailed discussion of the problems involved in the solution of high velocity impact calculations is given, together with an assessment of the effects of several material related parameters on the solution. several numerical comparisons with experimental evidence are also performed to indicate the effectiveness of the method. Finally, relevant conclusions have been made and suggestions for further study are provided.

Alzeyadi, Ali T. K. "An experimental investigation into the efficiency of filter materials for phosphate removal from wastewater." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2017. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/7410/.

Full text
Abstract:
Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients, which significantly influences the extraordinary growth of algae. Consequently, this leads to eutrophication of aquatic life. Eutrophication of water bodies due to phosphorus coming from wastewater is a serious problem. Therefore, additional work on many wastewater treatment plants is required in order to meet the required standards, particularly in relation to nutrient removal. Recently, continuous upflow filters CoUFs have been found to be a suitable technology for upgrading or expanding the wastewater treatment plants. On the other hand, investigation of different sorts of low-cost materials has been shown to be an attractive solution as phosphate sorbent materials PSMs, which represents a sustainable solution based on economical and environmental factors. This PhD study seeks to determine materials that are capable of removing phosphate from wastewater at tertiary treatment within a short time when they are packed in CoUFs. In order to select the suitable PSMs a comprehensive study has been conducted to describe their physical and chemical characteristics, affinity to retain orthophosphate (phosphate) and bonding time. This work was carried out through subjecting these materials to examinations such as scanning electron microscopy SEM and X-ray fluorescence analysis XRF to identify their characteristics, and conducting a batch test and constructing a lab-scale upflow filter to investigate the filter materials’ affinity to phosphate. Based on the phosphate removal efficiency and characteristics of selected materials an innovative and sustainable coating technology has been proposed to introduce a new type of filter material capable of removing phosphate effectively. Filtration materials coated with metallic oxides are presented as a good method for phosphate sorption. However, most of the researchers utilize chemicals as a source of metallic oxides and heating process to set the chemicals over the filtration materials. In this study, the method of creating new filter media involves coating a solid material via waste materials containing metallic oxides; the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was utilized as a binder for the mixture materials. Water is the factor which is responsible for activating the OPC. All factors have been subjected to an optimization process. The results revealed that the limestone particles coated by furnace bottom ash (FBA) indicated a high capacity for phosphate sorption and possibility of regenerating their efficiency. In conclusion, this study introduces a new approach regarding creating and developing the characteristics of the filter media which fit the sustainability requirements.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating on 3D Computer Vision, a research topic which is gathering even increasing attention thanks to the more and more widespread availability of affordable 3D visual sensor, such as, in particular consumer grade RGB-D cameras. The contribution of this dissertation is twofold. First, the work addresses how to compactly represent the content of images acquired with RGB-D cameras. Second, the thesis focuses on 3D Reconstruction, key issue to efficiently populate the databases of 3D models deployed in object/category recognition scenarios. As 3D Registration plays a fundamental role in 3D Reconstruction, the former part of the thesis proposes a pipeline for coarse registration of point clouds that is entirely based on the computation of 3D Local Reference Frames (LRF). Unlike related work in literature, we also propose a comprehensive experimental evaluation based on diverse kinds of data (such as those acquired by laser scanners, RGB-D and stereo cameras) as well as on quantitative comparison with respect to three other methods. Driven by the ever-lower costs and growing distribution of 3D sensing devices, we expect broad-scale integration of depth sensing into mobile devices to be forthcoming. Accordingly, the thesis investigates on merging appearance and shape information for Mobile Visual Search and focuses on encoding RGB-D images in compact binary codes. An extensive experimental analysis on three state-of-the-art datasets, addressing both category and instance recognition scenarios, has led to the development of an RGB-D search engine architecture that can attain high recognition rates with peculiarly moderate bandwidth requirements. Our experiments also include a comparison with the CDVS (Compact Descriptors for Visual Search) pipeline, candidate to become part of the MPEG-7 standard.

This thesis documents the design and implementation of a game controller glove that employs optical tracking technology to detect movement of the hand and fingers. The vision algorithm captures an image from a webcam in real-time and determines the centroids of colored sections on a glove worn by the player; assigning a distinctive identifier for each section which is associated with a 3D model retrieved from a preexisting library. A Vivitouch artificial muscle module is also mounted to the top of the glove to provide vibratory haptic feedback to the user. The system has been user tested and a number of potential use scenarios have been conceived for integration of the controller in various gaming applications.

Abstract:
In this study, the peeling process of UV-curable pressure sensitive adhesive tape from bump wafer is investigated through the use of finite element analysis, observation of high speed video, and actual wafer back-grinding process testing. In our experiment, a large deformation of adhesive is observed at the edge of bottom of bump, appearing on the side of the bump opposite tape-peeling direction when observed with high speed microscope video. The largely deformed adhesive creates a string shaped elongation. The adhesive residue is caused by the fracture of the adhesive string. We investigated how to generate the adhesive string in the tape-peeling process through the use of finite element analysis. In this analysis, a cohesive element is introduced into the adhesive layer. The analytical result shows the adhesive string at the same position of experiment and the stress distribution is different between the string part and the other area of adhesive. The influence of peeling angle and bump size is also investigated by the same finite element model. As a result, higher peeling angle and smaller bump sizes shows a shorter adhesive string, which lowers the risk of adhesive residue.

Abstract:
As a means of determining the conditions under which a patch of martensite (and eventually a spall) is formed on a wheel tread, the Wheel Defect Prevention Research Consortium (WDPRC) has conducted a review of wheel slide test reports and analytical models for the prediction of contact patch temperature due to wheel slide. The relative merits of the analytical models are discussed and applied to the known/assumed conditions, i.e., speed, axle load, and wheel/rail coefficients of friction (COF) for each of the wheel slide tests. The accuracy of the analytical models is evaluated with respect to test data under a variety of conditions from multiple sources. After selecting the most appropriate analytical model, wheel slide temperature predictions are given for empty cars at a variety of speeds and wheel/rail COF levels. It is concluded that the potential exists to create martensite on sliding wheels with almost any realistic combination of axle load, wheel slide duration, train speed, and wheel/rail adhesion level. Additionally, sources of wheel spalling are discussed with a focus on misapplied hand brakes and malfunctioning air brake systems. Multiple authors noted the presence of tread damage on one wheel of a wheelset with no damage at the corresponding circumferential location of the mate wheel. The accompanying theories to explain this seemingly counterintuitive finding are restated in this literature review. At the end of the paper, the actions of the WDPRC to reduce wheel spalling are briefly outlined.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent work using x-ray diffraction techniques has shown that the axial residual stress pattern within the railroad wheel rim is significantly different for as-manufactured AAR Class C wheels vs. AAR Class C wheels that have failed due to a vertical split rim (VSR), and non-failed AAR Class C wheels that have been operating in service. VSRs almost always begin at areas of tread damage, resulting from shelling or spalling, and cracking propagates into the rim section under load. At the locations tested, the as-manufactured wheels have a relatively “flat” axial residual stress profile, compressive but near neutral, caused by the rim quenching operation, while wheels that have been in service have a layer of high axial compressive stress at the tread surface, and a balancing zone of axial tensile stress underneath. The magnitude and direction of this tensile stress is consistent with the crack propagation of a VSR failure. When cracks from the tread surface propagate into this sub-surface axial tensile zone, a VSR can occur under sufficient additional service loading, such as loads caused by in-service wheel/rail impacts from tread damage. Further, softer Class U wheels, removed from service and tested, were found to have a balancing axial tensile stress layer that is deeper below the tread surface than that found in used Class C wheels. This paper describes further efforts to characterize the axial residual stress present in failed VSR and used Class C wheels. Axial residual stress results are obtained near the initiation point of several VSR wheels using x-ray diffraction. Sub-surface axial residual stress patterns are also determined at points of high out-of-roundness for a group of wheels that were tested for TIR (total indicated runout) on the tread surface. Residual stress data and a photo are presented for a wheel rim slice containing a second VSR crack. Additionally, wheel rim ultrasonic testing data, collected by the wheel manufacturer when the wheels were new, are discussed for wheels that have failed due to VSRs and these data are compared to ultrasonic data for non-VSR wheels. Chemistry data are also compared. These data show that the driving force for VSRs is axial residual tensile stress, not a material cleanliness issue.

In ASME 2005 3rd International Conference on Fuel Cell Science, Engineering and Technology. ASMEDC, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/fuelcell2005-74010.

Abstract:
The flow-field design of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) is an important subject about the DMFCs performance. Flow-fields play an important role on ability to transport fuel and drive out the products (H2O, CO2). In general, most of fuel cells utilize the same structure of flow-field for both anode and cathode. The popular flow-fields used for DMFCs are parallel and grid designs. Nevertheless, the characteristics of reactants and products are entirely different in anode and cathode of DMFCs. Therefore; the influences of the flow-fields designs on the cell performance were investigated due to the same logic for catalyst used for cathode and anode differently. To get the better and more stable performance of DMFC, three flow-fields (Parallel, Grid and Serpentine) are utilized with different combination were studied in this research. As a consequence, by using parallel flow-field in anode side and serpentine flow -field in cathode, the most and highest power output was obtained.

Abstract:
Abstract This article conceptualizes a single-phase microchannel heat sink for thermal management of concentrated photovoltaic cells; details of the model-based parametric study that is carried out on the heat sink is also detailed in this article. The heat sink consists of multiple serpentine microchannels. The mathematical model consists of continuity equation, Navier-Stokes equations and energy equations. Fluent module of Ansys Workbench is used for solving the model. The performance of the device is quantified in terms two metrics such as thermal resistance and pumping power. Studies are done for Reynolds number ranging from 100 to 1250. It is observed that increase in Reynolds number decreases the thermal resistance while increasing the pumping power irrespective of the geometric parameters of the heat sink. Decrease in hydraulic diameter of the microchannel reduces the thermal resistance while increasing the pumping power. Increase in the length segment of the serpentine microchannel increases and decreases the thermal resistance and pumping power, respectively. With increase in the offset width of the serpentine microchannel the thermal resistance and pumping power decreases and increases, respectively.

Abstract:
Traditionally, water is used in thermal power plant for heat rejection processes such as in the steam condenser for use in a Rankine cycle. Typically, research has shown that approximately 2 litres of water are required to generate 1 kWh of electricity on a wet-cooling system; which on a bigger scale could translated to more than 11000000 m3 per year of make-up water for a 600 MWe coal-fired plant. The ever-increasing cost of water resources as well as the water resource scarcity have paved a path to dry-cooling systems which alternatively provide a significant cooling potential. However, dry-cooling systems performance are generally driven by the atmospheric conditions which at time do not meet the desired cooling temperatures resulting in significant drop in their performance. Recent developments in cooling technology suggest that hybrid systems (dry-wet) be used to insure good and manageable performances while maintaining the cost of operation at admissible range. In light of the recent draught experienced in South Africa, attention was drawn to evaluation of deluged systems performance as well as water consumption to increase the public awareness in the field. In this study, a deluged bundle was used to experimentally determine the cooling performance characteristic as well as water consumption for performance management. The above is then considered on a bigger scale to in order to open floor for further discussion on future strategies in term of the South African policy on water usage.

Abstract:
In most of the existing SMA constitutive models, it is assumed that transformation starts when a thermodynamic driving force reaches a specified amount regardless of loading history. In this work, a phenomenological approach is used to develop an enhanced one-dimensional constitutive model in which loading history is directly considered as one of the main parameters affecting the transformation start conditions. To generalize the model to three-dimensional cases, a microplane formulation based on volumetric-deviatoric is employed. A free energy potential is defined at the microplane level, integrated over all orientations at a material point to provide the macroscopic free energy. Experiments are carried out on Nitinol superelastic tubes to validate the newly proposed constitutive model. In these experiments, interruptions are applied during transformations to show the effects of loading history on transformation start conditions. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data to demonstrate the accuracy of the enhanced model.
