Abstract:
Abstract The p-nuclei are supposed to be produced in different astrophysical processes, such as rapid-proton capture, photonuclear reaction, and neutrino-induced reaction. To date, their abundance cannot be reasonably explained. In the present work, the cross sections of the 74Ge (ν e , e −) 74As reaction are calculated with the theoretical and experimental B(GT) values, respectively. The abundance ratios between 74Se and 74Ge produced from the neutrino process (ν-process) are estimated based on the simple hypothesis for core-collapse supernova explosions. The results show that the upper limit of the 74Se and 74Ge abundance ratio resulting from the ν-process is about 36% of the value in the solar system.

Abstract:
70Ge and 74Ge isotopes were successfully separated from natural Ge and zone purified. Several highly enriched, high purity 70Ge and 74Ge single crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. The growth system was designed for reliable growth of low dislocation density, high purity Ge single crystals of very small weight (∼4 g). A 70Ge and a 74Ge crystal were selected for complete characterization. In spite of the large surface to volume ratio of these ingots, both 70Ge and 74Ge crystals contain low electrically active chemical net-impurity concentrations of ∼2 × 1012 cm−3, which is two orders of magnitude better than that of 74Ge crystals previously grown by two different groups.1,2 Isotopic enrichment of the 70Ge and the 74Ge crystals is 96.3% and 96.8%, respectively. The residual donors and acceptors present in both crystals were identified as phosphorus and copper, respectively. In addition, less than 1011 cm−3 gallium, aluminum, and indium were found in the 70Ge crystal.

Abstract:
Gamma-ray detection following the inelastic neutron scattering reaction on isotopically enriched material was used to study the nuclear structure of 74Ge. From these measurements, low-lying, low-spin excited states were characterized, new states and their decays were identified, level lifetimes were measured with the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM), multipole mixing ratios were established, and transition probabilities were determined. New structural features in 74Ge were identified, and the reanalysis of older 76Ge data led to the placement of the 2+ member of the intruder band. In addition, a number of previously placed states in 74Ge were shown not to exist. A procedure for future work, which will lead to meaningful data for constraining calculations of the neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix element, is suggested.

Abstract:

The current experimental effort to detect neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) has encouraged significant interest in understanding the nuclei that are candidates for the observation of this process. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the current body of work on the germanium isotopes near 76Ge, a candidate nucleus currently being used by several large-scale searches for 0νββ. Single-nucleon transfer experiments have been very successful in determining the occupancies of the valence shells in the parent and daughter nuclei 76Ge and 76Se. However, understanding the ground-state pairing of neutrons in 76Ge and protons in 76Se is also crucial because 0νββ converts correlated neutron pairs to correlated proton pairs. Neutron pairing in 76Ge has been found to be concentrated almost exclusively in the ground state, but studies on the tellurium isotopes have indicated that a fully neutron-paired ground state does not constrain the distribution of proton-pairing strength. This work uses the (3He,n) transfer reaction with a 74Ge target to investigate the proton-pairing strength distribution in 76Se. It is found that proton pairs transfer predominantly to the ground state of 76Se. Proton-pair transfer to excited 0+ states in 76Se is determined to be less than 4–8% of the ground-state pair-transfer strength.

An increasing number of measurements reveal the presence of a low-energy enhancement in the gamma-ray strength function (GSF). The GSF, which is the ability of nuclei to absorb or emit rays, provides insight into the statistical properties of atomic nuclei. For this project the GSF was studied for 74Ge which was populated in the reaction 74Ge(p,p')74Ge* at a beam energy of 18 MeV. The data were collected with the STARS-LIBERACE array at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Silicon detector telescopes were used for particle identi cation and rays in coincidence were detected with 5 clover-type high-purity germanium detectors. Through the analysis particle- - coincidence events were constructed. These events, together with well-known energy levels, were used to identify primary rays from the quasicontinuum. Primary rays from a broad excitation energy region, which decay to six 2+ states could be identi ed. These states and the associated primary rays are used to measure the GSF for 74Ge with the Ratio Method [1], which entails taking ratios of e ciency-corrected primary -ray intensities from the quasicontinuum. Results from the analysis of the data and focus on the existence of the low-energy enhancement in 74Ge will be discussed. The results are further discussed in the context of other work done on 74Ge using the ( , ') [2], (3He,3He') [3] and ( , ') [4] reactions.

Abstract:
This study investigated levels of job satisfaction and commitment reported by the population of class teachers on St. Helena Island (N = 76), and was set in the context of burgeoning turnover that threatens local educational provision. It explored possible determinants, correlates and implications of these constructs and their interrelationship, drawing comparisons with findings from other cultural environments. The investigation aimed to obtain high quality data that could inform policy decisions designed to reduce attrition, and to test established theories relating to job satisfaction and commitment within a small, developing state setting. A model of possible influences upon the constructs in question and their effect upon career decisions was developed. A three-phase research design was used, involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection. A purpose-built survey instrument, containing both scale and open-ended items, was constructed and administered. Non-participant observations and interviews were also undertaken. The findings reveal that although most St. Helenian class teachers were moderately satisfied with their jobs and committed to these, all found certain aspects of their role dissatisfying, and a quarter (N = 19) wished to cease teaching. Job satisfaction and commitment were found to possess a weak, positive relationship. Significant differences existed between responses of class teachers within different school sectors, and of those having disparate lengths of teaching experience. These appeared influenced by contextual and personal demographic factors. Similarities between challenges and constraints facing local class teachers and those in both developed, and other developing, states emerged strongly. Emanating from the results, recommendations for changes at strategic and operational levels that may reduce class teacher attrition were formulated, and areas for further research identified. The investigation, thus, sheds light upon the job satisfaction and commitment of St. Helenian class teachers and contributes to international literature pertaining to the theoretical aspects of these constructs

Abstract:
This thesis examines crucial decisions made about British broadcasting in the five years after 1958, when television first reached five million homes in Britain, and when, it was believed, working-class people had become a majority of the audience. The Pilkington Committee on the Future of Broadcasting was commissioned after some years' uncertainty by a Conservative Government in 1960, allowing it to postpone determining its own policy. The Committee published its Report in 1962, recommending a second television channel for the BBC but not for ITV. The following year, there followed a paternalist and restrictive Television Act. The BBC's dominance in British broadcasting was, as a result, assured for several decades, and commercial television, which had made controversially large profits by exploiting the public taste for undemanding entertainment, was brought under the control of a strengthened Independent Television Authority, emerging from it only in the 1990s. But, at a time when, it was thought, social change meant the end of deference, British television, in which the paternalist tradition was ubiquitous, remained an area where deference was actually enforced. Viewers were expected, much of the time on all available channels, to accept the primacy of the taste of the educated middle-class. Although the Pilkington Committee's recommendation for restructuring ITV was rejected, its Report was nonetheless instrumental in confirming a long-lasting paternalist bias in the system. The thesis analyses the Committee's approach, and argues that its importance should be recognised. Why, it is also asked, did a Conservative Government acquiesce in establishing a pattern of broadcasting contrary to the principles of free enterprise and competition in which it professed to believe? The answer is found in the ambivalence about social change which characterised Conservatism until the Thatcherite victory of the 1980s, and in the puritanical anti-commercialism of the Left.

Abstract:
Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating disease frequently leading to death or poor functional outcome and the pathophysiological changes that occur acutely post-rupture remain poorly understood. The work presented here describes a series of studies correlating serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning and bedside saccadometry with neurocognitive outcomes to investigate early brain injury after SAH. Further experiments investigate the potential of saccadometry as a bedside biomarker of cerebral ischaemia post-rupture and use MRI in a model of cerebral hypoxia to explore the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of nimodipine. Firstly, results demonstrated significantly increased apparent grey matter volume and restricted diffusion in the first 72 hours post-SAH in patients, suggesting the presence of undiagnosed and significant global cerebral oedema. Furthermore, structural images acquired at this stage enabled us to predict with high accuracy and specificity which patients will develop poor neurocognitive outcomes at three months. Next we investigated the impact of early brain injury on functional connectivity after SAH. Patients showed significantly increased functional connectivity compared to healthy controls in a number of functional networks associated with complex cognitive or emotional functions at all timepoints post-SAH. Neurocognitive impairment was associated with increased and decreases in functional connectivity and all differences were independent from any effect of altered grey matter volume. Improving the prediction of which patients are most at risk of developing secondary ischaemia following SAH remains a key area for research focus. We therefore used a portable beside saccadometer to acquire serial measurements of eye movements acutely post-rupture with results demonstrating faster eye movements are correlated with higher cerebral blood flow in the first 72 hours post-SAH. Finally, we used MRI to quantify the changes in cerebral structure, perfusion and function associated with a healthy volunteer model of acute hypoxia, and the effect of calcium channel blockade with nimodipine on these changes. Results suggest a preferential effect of calcium channel blockade in reversing regional MRI changes under conditions of hypoxia. These changes may help explain the outcome benefit seen in aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. This thesis highlights the potential of MRI imaging to offer biomarkers of early brain injury in the acute period post-SAH, to improve prediction of patients most at risk of neurocognitive impairment and to offer new insight into the mechanisms behind the therapeutic benefit seen with nimodipine.

Abstract:
This thesis describes a study of the clustering properties of galaxies and clusters of galaxies as measured by the power spectrum (P(k)) and the counts in cells statistic. The samples used are the optical Stromlo-APM galaxy survey, the APM cluster survey and the IRAS 1.2Jy, QDOT and PSCz surveys. Throughout, N-body simulations, for a variety of cosmological models, are used to test methods and to supplement analytic error estimates. For the Stromlo-APM sample the amplitude of the power spectrum is dependent on galaxy morphology. Early-type galaxies show a higher clustering amplitude than late-type galaxies by a factor of ~ 1.8. There is also tentative evidence for some dependence of the clustering amplitude on galaxy luminosity. The parameter Ω0.6/b is estimated via a comparison with the real-space power spectrum of the two-dimensional APM galaxy survey. For APM clusters the power spectrum is measured to very small wave numbers, with a possible detection of the expected turn-over. The results are inconsistent with the standard cold dark matter model. The shape of P( k) for clusters is approximately the same as that for Stromlo-APM galaxies but amplified by a factor of ~ 3.5. The power spectrum of the QDOT sample depends sensitively on the galaxy weighting scheme, probably due the manner in which the region of the Hercules supercluster is sampled. A best estimate of the power spectrum of IRAS galaxies is computed by combining the IRAS l.2Jy and QDOT samples. The PSCz galaxy power spectrum is also computed. The PSCz galaxies have a clustering amplitude twice that of optical galaxies. A similar result is found from a joint counts in cells analysis. Redshift-space distortions in the PSCz sample are analysed using a spherical harmonic decomposition of the density field. The value of Ω0.6/b = 1 is ruled out by this analysis at the 2σ significance level.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of the classed and gendered trajectories that lead to 'revolving door' incarceration for a group of men from working class backgrounds. Considering that men commit most crime and, in the UK, account for over 95% of the prison population, there is relatively little scholarship that explores the links between masculinity and crime and almost a dearth of ethnographic enquiry into the links between the social construction of masculinities and incarceration. In response, this study, employing qualitative in-depth life history interviews with thirty male prisoners housed in an East Yorkshire prison, examines the cyclical interrelations between cultural representations of masculinity, place, schooling, employment, crime and incarceration. Influenced by Connell's theoretical framework, including the relational concept of protest masculinities, and by the Teesside School's work on transitions and alternative careers, the main aim of this research is to examine if, and to what extent, significant cultural and institutional spaces were complicit in the construction and maintenance of versions of protest masculinities. The study reveals that masculinities negotiated over interconnecting sites of deprived neighbourhoods, inadequate children's residential 'care' homes and failing schools better prepared most respondents to serve time in prison than to work in contemporary deindustrialised labour markets. Formative teenage years spent negotiating impoverished prison regimes and living up to extreme prison masculinities contributed to many of the respondents spending more time inside prison than 'on the out'. The thesis concludes with recommendations for policy approaches to better facilitate crucial sites, such as schools and prisons, undoing, rather than reinforcing, troubling gender performances for young boys and men like these respondents. Reducing rising male prison populations, mainly made up of men from deprived neighbourhoods, might be more effectively tackled through innovative, gender informed, policy, ensuring that institutional spaces of learning, 'care', punishment and rehabilitation work harder to open up more positive avenues to doing masculinity.

Nanocomposite metal/carbon thin films, consisting of metal rich nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix, present specific and tunable physicochemical properties, depending on the chemical composition of thin films. The morphology and the microstructure of these materials have been explored on a wide range of chemical composition using electronic microscopy, EDX, XPS, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of the metal nature on the nanocomposite metal/carbon thin film microstructure and electrical properties was studied for two metals : nickel and copper. The thin films were deposited using two different plasma processes : a first one combining the magnetron sputtering of the metal target (nickel or copper) and the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition in an argon/methane gas mixture, and the other one consisting in the cosputtering of metal and graphite targets. The study of the electrical properties highlighted an electrical percolation phenomenon. The catalytic properties for the carbon nanotubes growth and the piezoresistive behavior of nickel based thin films were studies. In addition, an original method based on the selective etching of copper nanoparticles contained in nc-Cu/C thin films was developed, leading to the synthesis of nanoporous carbon electrodes

Abstract:
In this thesis we provide a unifying framework for two decades of work in an area of Machine Learning known as cost-sensitive Boosting algorithms. This area is concerned with the fact that most real-world prediction problems are asymmetric, in the sense that different types of errors incur different costs. Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) is one of the most well-studied and utilised algorithms in the field of Machine Learning, with a rich theoretical depth as well as practical uptake across numerous industries. However, its inability to handle asymmetric tasks has been the subject of much criticism. As a result, numerous cost-sensitive modifications of the original algorithm have been proposed. Each of these has its own motivations, and its own claims to superiority. With a thorough analysis of the literature 1997-2016, we find 15 distinct cost-sensitive Boosting variants - discounting minor variations. We critique the literature using {\em four} powerful theoretical frameworks: Bayesian decision theory, the functional gradient descent view, margin theory, and probabilistic modelling. From each framework, we derive a set of properties which must be obeyed by boosting algorithms. We find that only 3 of the published Adaboost variants are consistent with the rules of all the frameworks - and even they require their outputs to be calibrated to achieve this. Experiments on 18 datasets, across 21 degrees of cost asymmetry, all support the hypothesis - showing that once calibrated, the three variants perform equivalently, outperforming all others. Our final recommendation - based on theoretical soundness, simplicity, flexibility and performance - is to use the original Adaboost algorithm albeit with a shifted decision threshold and calibrated probability estimates. The conclusion is that novel cost-sensitive boosting algorithms are unnecessary if proper calibration is applied to the original.
