Abstract:
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: During the Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection, the infiltration of the leukocytes into stomach mucosa is directed by locally produced chemokines that play a decisive role in infection outcome. The CagA is the most potent virulence factor of HP, so that the infection with CagA + strains is associated with more severe complications than infection with CagA - HP. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the expression of chemokines CXCL10, CCL17, CCL20 and CCL22, and their receptors by CagA + HP- and CagA - HP-derived crude extract (HP-CE)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from peptic ulcer (PU) patients. METHODS: The serum and the PBMCs were collected from 20 HP-infected PU patients, 20 HP-infected asymptomatic subjects (HIA) and 20 non-infected healthy subjects (NHS). The PBMCs were cultured in absence of stimulator or with 10 µg CagA + HP crude extract (CagA + CE), 10 µg CagA - HP crude extract (CagA - CE). Chemokines and receptors were measured by ELISA and real time-PCR respectively. RESULTS: In PU patients, the production of chemokines CXCL10, CCL17, CCL20 and CCL22, and the expression of chemokine receptors CXCR3, CCR4 and CCR6 by CagA + CE-induced PBMCs were significantly higher than non-stimulated and CagA - CE stimulated cultures. The CXCL10 production by CagA + CE stimulated PBMCs from HIA subjects was significantly higher than the equal cultures from PU and NHS groups. The CCL17 and the CCL20 production by non-stimulated, CagA + CE stimulated, and CagA - CE stimulated PBMCs from PU subjects were significantly higher than the equal cultures from NHS and HIA groups. The CCL22 production by non-stimulated, CagA + CE stimulated and CagA - CE stimulated PBMCs from NHS group were significantly higher than the equal cultures from HIA and PU groups. The CagA + CE stimulated PBMCs from HIA subjects expressed lower amounts of CCR6 in comparison with CagA + CE stimulated PBMCs from NHS and PU groups. The serum levels CXCL10 and CCL20 in PU and HIA groups were significantly higher than NHS subjects. NHS and HIA groups displayed higher serum levels of CCL22 in comparison with PU patients. CONCLUSION: Results indicated that the CagA status of bacterium influence the expression of chemokines and receptors by HP-CE stimulated PBMCs from PU patients.

Abstract:
Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) blended with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) with chain extender (CE) was prepared by melt mixing. Mechanical properties of PPC/PBS composites showed that the addition of CE can increase its tensile strength and unnotched impact strength, and the PPC/PBS composites had higher tensile strength when CE (0.4 wt%) was added into PPC/PBS composites. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that adding CE to PPC/PBS (70/30 wt%) can improve the thermal decomposition temperatures ( T −5% and T −10%). Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the incorporation of CE increased the storage modulus of the PPC/PBS (70/30 wt%) composites.

Abstract:
Diversity from the beginning: A comparison of Mack and Crossan’s constructs of earliest Christianities (ca 30-70 CE) According to recent propositions by Burton Mack and Dominic Crossan, earliest Christianity was a diverse phenomenon right from its inception. In this article their constructs of this early phase of 'church ’ history (ca 30-70 CE) are compared, so as to identify similarities and differences, advantages and shortcomings. The essay concludes with a proposal on methodological procedure to be followed in the search for earliest forms of Christianities (ca 30-70 CE), as well as some remarks on the meaning of the comparative analysis undertaken by Mack and Crossan.

Abstract:
Recently in this journal H. C. Kee has exposed and refuted perceived anachronistic notions concerning the existence of the pre-70 CE synagogue.1According to Kee's thesis, the pre-70 CE synagogue was not a distinctive architectural edifice, but a voluntary gathering place for worship. Kee writes:The earliest distinct buildings date from the third century, and vary widely in style and interior arrangements. There is simply no evidence to speak of synagogues in Palestine as architecturally distinguishable edifices prior to 200 CE. Evidence of meeting places: ‘Yes’, both in private homes and in public buildings. Evidence of distinctive architectural features of a place of worship or for study of Torah: ‘No’.2As a result, Kee attempts to redate the Theodotus inscription, our major epigraphical source for the pre-70 CE Palestinian synagogue, to the ‘mid–second to late third century CE’.3This late dating is necessary in Kee's theory, since this inscription documents a succession of synagogue rulers, extending back to Theodotus’ grandfather, which would place the Palestinian synagogue and its institutions well into the first century BCE.

Abstract:
Until Titus's destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, the national and religious life of Palestinian Jewry was organized around the cultic system of the Temple. Despite many changes in the political status of the nation and of Jerusalem itself, the Temple continued to serve as the seat of the priesthood, the destination of sacred pilgrimage, and the instrument of cultic expiation. Other places and forms of worship are attested during the second commonwealth, and by the advent of the common era groups such as the Qumran community had turned away from Jerusalem altogether. Yet there can be little doubt that the Temple was perceived as the preeminent symbol of Israel's God. Excavations of first-century Palestinian synagogues have revealed a basic architectural design of orientation toward the sanctuary. Although geographically and religiously remote from the Temple, the Jews of the diaspora continued, writes Philo of Alexandria (ca. 20 BCE–50 CE), to “hold the Holy City where stands the sacred Temple of the most high God to be their mother city.”

Abstract:
The objective was to evaluate the effects of different modified atmospheres on the packaging of sun-dried meat and their influence on the useful life. To this end, beef steaks of the hard topside type (Bíceps femoris) were cut, salted with 2.5% NaCl and packed in the following atmospheres: atmospheric air (CE-Ar); vacuum (CE-V); 100% CO2 (CE-ATM1); 50% CO2+ 50% N2 (CE-ATM2); 70% CO2+ 30% N2 (CE-ATM3); 30% CO2 + 70% N2 (CE-ATM4). The samples were evaluated for microbiological and physico-chemical quality. Meat packed in atmospheres with different CO2and N2 ratios had a useful life of up to 12 days, without significant variations between treatments, as to microbiological quality. Regarding the physicochemical characteristics, despite increasing the lipid oxidation in the meat, the atmospheres with different mixtures of CO2 and N2 used for packaging the meats presented the best quality characteristics. Therefore, according to this study, atmospheres modified with CO2 and N2 can be recommended as better alternatives to prolong the life of sun-dried meat.

Abstract:
Abstract Cowpea is considered as one of the underutilized legumes which is rich in secondary metabolites. These metabolites can be detected during the plant growth and the contents increase especially after the plants are stressed both abiotic and biotic. This study aimed to determine total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as antioxidant activity in seeds of eight cowpea genotypes. Two extraction solvents (70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone) were used to extract the secondary metabolites in those cowpea genotypes. Total flavonoid contents of those genotypes extracted in 70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone were in the range from 7.28 to 10.90 mg CE/g and 7.84 to 11.58 mg CE/g, whereas total phenolic contents were from 15.20 to 19.99 mg GAE/g and 15.03 to 21.15 mg GAE/g. Inhibition percentages of antioxidant activity were in the range from 46.90 % to 59.46 % and 50.71 % to 63.81 % for 70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone, respectively. Both solvents were effective to extract those secondary metabolites. Flavonoid and phenolic contents of MLGU 0239 were the highest among other genotypes, which were 11.58 mg CE/g and 21.15 GAE/g and antioxidant activity was 63.81 % inhibition after being extracted with 70% acidified acetone. This study observed the variation of the secondary metabolites among eight cowpea genotypes with different seed coat colours.

Ce-containing Layered Double Hydroxides (Ce-LDHs) were prepared by conventional and microwave-assisted crystallization method, which were denoted as Ce-LDHs-A and Ce-LDHs-B, respectively. The dispersibility of Ce-LDHs-B is much better than that of Ce-LDHs-A; the particles of Ce-LDHs-B with particle size ranging from 20 to 70 nm are smaller than that of Ce-LDHs-A with sizes around 50-300 nm. The effect of the cerium to aluminum molar ratios, microwave crystallization time and reaction temperature on the structure of Ce-LDHs was also investigated. The results show the excessive Ce into LDHs causes distortion of the samdwich, the damage of the LDHs structure becomes more and more serious with increasing the proportion of Ce/Al. The structure of Ce-LDHs becomes more and more perfect with the increasing of the microwave crystallization time and reaction temperature.

Abstract:
Cholesteryl ester (CE) hydrolysis is the rate-limiting step in the removal of free cholesterol (FC) from macrophage foam cells, and several enzymes have been identified as intracellular CE hydrolases in human macrophages. We have previously reported the antiatherogenic role of a carboxylesterase [carboxylesterase 1 (CES1)], and the objective of the present study was to determine the contribution of CES1 to total CE hydrolytic activity in human macrophages. Two approaches, namely, immune depletion and short hairpin (sh)RNA-mediated knockdown, were used. Immuneprecipitation by a CES1-specific antibody resulted in a 70–80% decrease in enzyme activity, indicating that CES1 is responsible for >70% of the total CE hydrolytic activity. THP1-shRNA cells were generated by stably transfecting human THP1 cells with four different CES1-specific shRNA vectors. Despite a significant (>90%) reduction in CES1 expression both at the mRNA and protein levels, CES1 knockdown neither decreased intracellular CE hydrolysis nor decreased FC efflux. Examination of the underlying mechanisms for the observed lack of effects of CES1 knockdown revealed a compensatory increase in the expression of a novel CES, CES3, which is only expressed at <30% of the level of CES1 in human macrophages. Transient overexpression of CES3 led to an increase in CE hydrolytic activity, mobilization of intracellular lipid droplets, and a reduction in cellular CE content, establishing CES3 as a bona fide CE hydrolase. This study provides the first evidence of functional compensation whereby increased expression of CES3 restores intracellular CE hydrolytic activity and FC efflux in CES1-deficient cells. Furthermore, these data support the concept that intracellular CE hydrolysis is a multienzyme process.

Abstract:
Abstract Cytogenetic clonal evolution (CE) is a known poor prognostic factor in Philadelphia chromosome–positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (Ph-positive CML). However, its prognostic relevance in the era of imatinib therapy is unknown. We investigated the independent prognostic relevance of CE in 498 patients with Ph-positive CML treated with imatinib for chronic or accelerated phases. One hundred twenty-one patients had CE alone (n = 70) or with other accelerated phase criteria (n = 51). Patients were compared in 4 categories: chronic phase (n = 295), CE only (n = 70), accelerated phase without CE (n = 82), and accelerated phase with CE (n = 51). Statistical methods used established methodologies for univariate and multivariate analyses. In chronic and accelerated phases of CML, CE was not associated with significant differences in major or complete cytogenetic response rates, but it was an independent poor prognostic factor for survival by multivariate analyses in both chronic (P = .005) and accelerated phase (P = .03). Multivariate analyses conducted at the 3-month landmark (including the 3-month cytogenetic response) identified the lack of cytogenetic response at 3 months to be a stronger independent poor prognostic factor for survival than CE for both chronic (major cytogenetic response versus other) and accelerated phase (any cytogenetic response versus other). We conclude that cytogenetic CE is not an important factor for achieving major or complete cytogenetic response with imatinib mesylate therapy, but it is an independent poor prognostic factor for survival in both chronic and accelerated phases of CML. The 3-month cytogenetic response to imatinib mesylate refined the prognostic relevance of such studies in patients on imatinib mesylate therapy.

Abstract:
Background: Coronary endarterectomy (CE) is performed as an adjunct to coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG); however, the efficacy of this technique is still controversial. We aimed to evaluate the impact of CE combined with CABG when compared with isolated CABG.
Methods: Patients who underwent CABG between July 2007 and June 2014 were included. 70 of 2452 patients (2.8%) underwent CE in addition to CABG. Early results were compared with isolated CABG and predictors of adverse outcome were measured in stepwise multivariate logistic regression analyses.
Results: The incidence of comorbidities including prior myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and three-vessel coronary disease in CE patients was higher; however, mortality (4.3% versus control 3.6%; P = .762) and postoperative complications were not significantly increased in this group of patients (except supraventricular arrhythmia). Although age greater than 70 years, impaired ejection fraction, intraoperative intraaortic balloon pump, and prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass time were important predictors of adverse outcomes, CE was not associated with increased mortality or postoperative morbidities.
Conclusion: Despite the higher risk profile of patients who underwent CE, this technique was not identified as an independent risk factor for adverse postoperative outcomes.

Abstract:
This research examines the attitude of rabbinic literature to poverty and the poor after the destruction of the Second Temple. In the Hebrew Bible there are instructions to care for the poor and to be compassionate toward them. However, in Wisdom literature there is also criticism of the poor depicting them as lazy. The Torah obligates the individual Jew to support the poor though tithes from the produce of the fields, giving charity and free loans, but does not advocate establishing public funds for the relief of the poor. Rabbinic literature from after the destruction of the temple shows that the rabbis advocated community responsibility for helping the poor. It shows compassion toward the poor and encourages the Jews to support them through charity. They amended religious laws in order to enable the poor to have more to consume. This seems to be a change from the way the rabbis related to the poor prior to the destruction as is depicted by the New Testament. Examination of actions attributed to sages from before the destruction shows that the rabbis related positively primarily toward poor who were “sons of good” citizens. The other poor were “others” and were left to charity and tithes. After the destruction all poor are “ours,” sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The following study treats two distinct but related questions. First, were the Pharisees the dominant party in Palestinian Judaism before the destruction of the temple? And second, did Jesus of Nazareth engage in controversy with them? Many scholars today would answer one or both of these questions negatively. My thesis, however, is that both should be answered affirmatively and, further, that it was precisely the status of the Pharisees as the dominant party that makes intelligible Jesus' charge of hypocrisy.

Abstract:
After the start of mass production in April 2003 of a completely new Euro 4, 1.3 L, common rail Diesel engine, an upgraded variant has been recently developed, with power output increased from 70 to 90 PS and torque output increased from 180 to 200 N·m. To meet this target the combustion system has been deeply revised and common rail pressure increased from 1400 to 1600 bar, while maintaining the multiple injection feature already introduced on the 70 PS variant. Moreover, a variable geometry, small turbocharger has been specifically developed and the mechanical components upgraded to comply with an increased peak cylinder pressure from 140 to 160 bar. In order to comply with Euro 4 emission standards on critical applications with high load factors new control functions have been developed, in order to reduce the dispersion and the drift in durability, such as the lambda control based on an O2 sensor. In spite of Euro 4 emission compliance on most of the forecasted applications with conventional DOC after-treatment, a DPF version will be provided as well, adopting the maintenance free technology already applied on other engines with higher displacement. The 1.3 L SDE family is manufactured in Poland, in a plant located in Bielsko Biala, with an installed production capacity close to 700.000 engines per year.

Abstract:
Background and Introduction: Collateral circulation is very crucial for the prognosis of stroke patients. Transcranial color-coded duplexsonography (TCCD) is used widely to evaluate the intracranial arterial blood flow. However, approximately 20% - 30% of the patients with cerebral infarction cannot be detected via TCCD due to the interruption of thickened temporal bones. We assessed the diagnostic efficacy of contrast-enhanced transcranial color-coded duplexsonography (CE-TCCD) in stroke patients with limited bone windows. Methods: CE-TCCD was applied to 70 patients (51 males and 19 females) who presented with ischemic symptoms, to detect the openness of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA) and posterior communicating artery (PCoA) of the Willis ring before Computed Tomography angiography (CTA) or Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) examination. The results from CETCCD is used to compare with CTA/MRA result to verify the diagnostic efficacy. Results: Forty-one communicating artery openings were detected by CE-TCCD, among which 37 were PCoA and 4 were ACoA. Among the 70 patients, 23 of 70 patients indicated severe stenosis within intracranial and/or extracranial arteries. Eighteen out of the 23 patients showed collateral circulation, accounting for 78.3% (18/23). Moderate stenosis were 23 cases in total, in which 7 cases showed collateral circulation, accounting for 30.4% (7/23). Slight stenosis were 24 cases in total, none of which showed collateral circulation. Conclusion : In the stroke patients with limited bone windows, CE-TCCD can evaluate intracranial collateral circulation.

Aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by Ce(IV)/p-hydroxy acetophenone (Ce(IV) – HAP) was studied in aqueous solution of sulfuric acid at 40°C. The rate of polymerization was investigated at various concentrations of monomer, initiator, activator, sulfuric acid and the effect of temperature of 30-70°C range was studied. The rate of polymerization is governed by the expression Rp = Kp [M]1.44[Ce(IV)]0.55[HAP]0.51. The activation energy of polymerization was found to be 17.9 kJ/mol. A probable mechanism consistent with the observed results is proposed and discussed.

Measuring the spectra of absorption, luminescence and excitation, and the decay times of the luminescence, at various temperatures, we investigate the scintillation mechanism of Ce 3+ doped Gd 2 SiO 5 (GSO:Ce). We conclude that the excitation energy created by gamma-ray irradiation relaxes to the core exciton states formed by the 4f-4f transitions of Gd 3+, and the core exciton migrates to collide with Ce 3+, and transfers the energy to Ce 3+ to emit the luminescence. We also conclude that the decay time of the Ce 3+ luminescence in GSO:Ce (70 ns for the case of 0.5 mol% of Ce concentration) is decided by the diffusion time of the core exciton. A very small value for the diffusion coefficient of the core exciton is estimated to be 7× 10-7 cm2/s.

Abstract Introduction: Differences of sexual development (DSD) define congenital diseases in which an atypical development of chromosomal, gonadal or anatomical sex occurs. The approach involves complex themes: gender designation, genitoplasty, hormonal treatment and fertility. Mothers’ understanding optimizes their children’s assistance. Objective/methods: To analyze the mothers’ understanding about the DSD condition, doubts, concerns, barriers to communication and repercussion in gender, sexual orientation and relationships in a cohort followed in reference centers in São Paulo (SP) and Ceará (CE), through an interview. Results: 112 mothers (72 from SP and 50 from CE) were interviewed. Mothers’ mean age was 35 y. The satisfaction related to the understanding about their children’s condition (on a scale from 1 to 5) was higher in the SP: medians of 4 (SP) and 3 (CE). Significant differences were evidenced between the numbers of mothers who knew the condition’s name, 56.3% (SP) and 38.6% (CE); who knew why the children had been affected by it, 38.5% (SP) and 16.7% (CE); and who knew the drugs’ function, 89.3% (SP) and 70.4% (CE). 70% to 83% of the mothers referred doubts, mainly related to the diagnosis and their feeling of guilt. Considering only children with atypical genitalia at birth (n:115), the difference was not diagnosed at hospital in 15% (4 from SP and 14 from CE). Pediatricians and obstetricians first communicated to mothers about the atypical genitalia in 73% of the reports. 70% (SP) and 41% (CE) of the mothers considered the first approach inappropriate. 89% of all mothers feel uncomfortable in talking to other people about the DSD condition and 68% experienced negative comments. Around 70% of mothers reported discomfort in exposing their children’s genitalia and 64% considered genitoplasty as an urgency. 47% referred that the DSD may influence the gender identity, 65.4% referred it may prejudice relationships and 33.3% believed it may influence on sexual orientation. The concern related to stigma was higher than related to fertility, genitalia appearance, relationships, treatments, gender identity and sexuality. Conclusion: Most of the mothers of DSD children, even in reference centers, showed unsatisfaction and lack of knowledge. The health team should be trained and the approach should consider the mothers’ perspectives and be appropriate to the cultural context. Educational actions may improve understanding and reduce the DSD stigma.

Abstract To examine the efficiency of La and Ce recycling processes from the sludge, two major methods were used, namely leaching and precipitation. The findings suggest that 12% of La and 24.2% of Ce were contained in the sludge. The sludge was leached in an optimum condition of 6N HCl at a temperature of 70°C with a 3g/50 mL solid/liquid ratio for 3 h to obtain a 100% leaching recovery of La and Ce. After pH adjustment of the obtained La and Ce optimum leaching solution to 6 with NH4OH and a simultaneous addition of H2O2 in a ratio of 1:1, Ce precipitated out with 65.9% recovery. On the other hand, La was not precipitated. The results obtained in this study reveal that leaching and pH adjustment method could be used to recover the valuable REE of La and Ce from glass polishing sludge in order to reach the goals of resource recycling.

Abstract:
Introduction: Detection and treatment of chronic endometritis (CE) is clinically significant, though involves intrauterine intervention to collect endometrium. The aim: To estimate the possibility to use fertility α2-microglobulin (FAMG) as the marker of the high risk for CE. Materials and methods: 70 women with CE who were planning pregnancy were tested for FAMG in menstrual blood. 40 of them received treatment of CE. The other 30 women refused from the proposed treatment. The control group involved 30 women who had neither CE nor luteal phase deficiency (LPD). Additional group (20 women) had LPD without CE. Results: The decrease of FAMG by 2.4 times was noted in women with CE (16.3 ± 3.9 μg/ml against 39.8 ± 8.3 μg/ml in the controls). In LPD the index was 5.6 times lower. After treatment the level of FAMG was increasing. Conclusions: The decrease of the amount of FAMG in menstrual blood is specific for women both with CE and LPD. Detection of abnormally low rates of FAMG in all women with CE enables, with the exception of absolute hypoprogesteronemia and LPD, using it as a simple method of estimation of the functional state of endometrium. Its application can be very useful both for non-invasive diagnosis of CE and subsequent evaluation of treatment of this pathology.

Abstract:
Abstract Capillary electrophoresis (CE) and immunosubtraction capillary electrophoresis (IS-CE) were compared with the conventional methods agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) for detection and identification of paraproteins. In total, 74 paraproteins out of 468 serum samples were detected by both methods. Seventy-three monoclonal bands with concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 50.9 g/L were detected by the routine method. With CE, 70 paraproteins were detected and quantified on the electropherogram. Four paraproteins were not detected by CE; three of these were IgG (0.6, 1.1, and 2.2 g/L, respectively), and one was a IgM paraprotein (20.3 g/L) that could be visualized by minor changes in the running conditions. In comparison with IFE, 69 paraproteins were typed identically using IS-CE; only one paraprotein (IgMκ, 14.9 g/L) could not be identified. On the other hand, a monoclonal IgA band that had not been detected by AGE was identified by CE and IS-CE. We conclude that, in general, CE could be a useful method for detection of paraproteins and that IS-CE is a good alternative to IFE. Additional studies are required to investigate the ionic strength and pH of the running buffer, because these prove to be the most crucial factors for routine CE separation of paraproteins.
