Abstract:
Hesiod's Theogony contains three similes, each of which elaborates a climactic moment in Zeus' securing of power: an image of bees (594–602) describes the nature of women in the Pandora episode, the aftermath of Zeus' triumph over Prometheus; battle resounds with a crash as if earth and heaven are coming together (699–705) in the climax of the Titanomachy, wherein Zeus and the Olympians overcome the Titans; and Zeus is likened to a craftsman melting ore (861–7) during his conquest of his final challenger, Typhoeus. In each episode complemented by a simile, Zeus' power attains greater stability; in the aftermath of the last of these episodes, the Typhonomachy, his power achieves permanent ascendancy (881–5). Despite the prominent occasions of these similes, they stand largely unexplored. This paper considers the simile of metallurgy in the Typhonomachy, the simile that reconfigures Zeus' final acquisition of power. Positioned at such a critical moment, attention to this simile promises to reveal elements fundamental to an understanding of Zeus' ultimate power.

Abstract:
Laboratory and clinical studies have demonstrated that therapeutic hypothermia (TH), when applied as soon as possible after resuscitation from cardiac arrest (CA), results in better neurological outcome. This study tested the hypothesis that TH would promote cerebral blood flow (CBF) restoration and its maintenance after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) from CA. Twelve Wistar rats resuscitated from 7-min asphyxial CA were randomized into two groups: hypothermia group (7 H, n = 6), treated with mild TH (33–34℃) immediately after ROSC and normothermia group (7 N, n = 6,37.0 ± 0.5℃). Multiple parameters including mean arterial pressure, CBF, electroencephalogram (EEG) were recorded. The neurological outcomes were evaluated using electrophysiological (information quantity, IQ, of EEG) methods and a comprehensive behavior examination (neurological deficit score, NDS). TH consistently promoted better CBF restoration approaching the baseline levels in the 7 H group as compared with the 7 N group. CBF during the first 5–30 min post ROSC of the two groups was 7 H:90.5% ± 3.4% versus 7 N:76.7% ± 3.5% ( P < 0.01). Subjects in the 7 H group showed significantly better IQ scores after ROSC and better NDS scores at 4 and 24 h. Early application of TH facilitates restoration of CBF back to baseline levels after CA, which in turn results in the restoration of brain electrical activity and improved neurological outcome.

Abstract:
Abstract To analyze helper T (Th) cell-induced B cell proliferation in man, we have cloned allospecific Th cells, grown them as long-term IL 2-dependent T cell lines (TCL), and analyzed their phenotypic and functional properties. The two TCL described in this report, A-7 and A-57, are both composed exclusively of T3+, T4+, T8- T cells blasts. In proliferative assays, with a panel of x-irradiated allogeneic stimulator cells, A-7 was found to proliferate in response to DR3-bearing cells, whereas A-57 responds to DR2-positive stimulators. Both TCL are capable of providing MHC-restricted polyclonal help for allogeneic B cells, as measured in the reverse hemolytic plaque assay. Of greater interest, x-irradiated A-7 and A-57 cells are capable of inducing a proliferative response by allogeneic B cells that is absolutely MHC restricted at the inductive (Th-APC) level. Thus, x-irradiated A-7 cells only trigger proliferation by DR3+ B cells, whereas A-57 cells selectively activate DR2+ B cells. In contrast, after antigen-specific activation, x-irradiated A-7 and A-57 cells can recruit a significant proliferative response by allogeneic B cells bearing "irrelevant" DR antigens. The possibility that Th-induced B cell proliferation may be restricted at the effector (Th-B cell) level was addressed by fractionating B cell populations into "activated" and "resting" subsets by discontinuous Percoll density gradient centrifugation and further purification by employing a monoclonal antibody directed against an antigen expressed on activated B cells (4F2). These studies demonstrate that activated B cells are readily and nonspecifically recruited to proliferate by activated Th cells, whereas optimal proliferative responses by resting B cells require MHC restricted Th-B cell interaction.

Abstract:
The aim of the work is to study the clinical and morphological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with the autoimmune thyroiditis Hashimoto (TH)Material and methods. 236 clinical observations of patients with PTC of the surgical hospital of he State Institution of Science "Research and Practical Centre of Preventive and Clinical Medicine" State Administrative Department during 2012-2018 were investigated. We study the size of the tumor, the presence of invasions in the thyroid tissue and in the capsule of the gland, multifocal growth, metastases in the lymph nodes of group 6 and metastases in the lymph nodes of 2,3,4 groups. For statistical analysis, Fischer' sex act test and Student's t-criterion were used. Valuesare interpreted by the trueat p <0,05.Results.Of the 236 cases of PTC, TH was found in 72 patients (30.5%), in 56 cases- other proliferative-hyperplastic processesor nodal thyroid pathology (23.7%), and 108 cases (45.8%) were without concomitant pathology. There were 142 (60.2%)women with PTC, and 94 (39.8%) men, p <0.05. In patients with PTC and TH were 53 women (73.6%) and 19 men (26.3%), p <0.05. In patients with TH in comparison with the group without concomitant thyropathology, a significantly higher number of microcarcinoma was noted, the size of tumors in TH was lower (with TH 23 (31.9%), without TH 57 (52.8%), p <0.05 ). In patients without TH, carcinoma invasion was more likely to occur in the thyroid tissue (with TH 32 (44.4%), without TH 66 (61.1%), p <0.05), invasion to the capsule of the gland with extra thyroid invasion (with TH 17 (23.6%), without TX 42 (38.9%), p <0.05), multifocal growth (with TH 15 (20.8%), without TH 48 (44.4%), p <0 , 05). Patients with TH more often had metastasis to the lymphnodes of group 6 (with TH36 (50.0%), without TH 43 (39.8%), p <0.05), and in patients without TH, more often in lateral cervical lymphnodes (with TC 7 (9.7%), without TH 31 (28.7%), p <0.05).Conclusions. 1) PTC with TH more often occur in women. 2) PTC with TH has a less aggressive course regarding the size of the tumor node, intratireoid and extrathyroid invasion, multifocal growth, and metastasis in lateral cervical lymphnodes.

Abstract:
Abstract The present study investigates the regulatory effects of glycosaminoglycans such as heparin and heparan sulfate on T cell proliferation induced by thymic stromal cell monolayer or its derived T cell growth factor (TCGF). A thymic stromal cell clone (MRL104.8a) supported the growth of Ag-specific, IL-2-dependent Th cell clone (9-16) in the absence of Ag and IL-2 by producing a unique TCGF designated as thymic stroma-derived T cell growth factor (TSTGF). The addition of heparin to cultures in which the growth of 9-16 Th cells was otherwise stimulated by the MRL104.8a monolayer or a semipurified sample of the TSTGF resulted in heparin dose-dependent inhibition of 9-16 Th proliferation. The dose of heparin required for inducing 50% reduction of TSTGF-induced proliferation of Th at a given cell number was found to be proportional to the magnitude of the TSTGF added to cultures, suggesting that heparin exerted its inhibitory effect by binding to the TSTGF rather than by acting on Th cells. A similar growth-inhibiting effect of heparin was observed in IL-7-dependent proliferation of pre-B cell line or Th, but not in IL-2-dependent T cell proliferation or IL-3-dependent myeloid cell proliferation. A strong affinity of TSTGF and IL-7 for heparin was confirmed by the fact that both TSTGF and IL-7 adhered to columns of heparin-agarose and were eluted by salt. When various glycosaminoglycans were tested for the heparin-like Th growth-regulatory capacity, heparan sulfate exhibited Th growth-inhibiting ability comparable to that observed for heparin. These results indicate that the activity of thymic and/or bone marrow stroma-derived lymphocyte growth factor (TSTGF/IL-7) but not of Th-producing TCGF (IL-2) is negatively regulated by heparin or heparan sulfate, which would represent major glycosaminoglycans in the extra-cellular matrix of stromal cells.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) improves neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest (CA) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Although nitric oxide prevents organ injury induced by ischemia and reperfusion, role of nitric oxide during TH after CPR remains unclear. In this article, the authors examined the impact of endogenous nitric oxide synthesis on the beneficial effects of hypothermia after CA/CPR. The authors also examined whether or not inhaled nitric oxide during hypothermia further improves outcomes after CA/CPR in mice treated with TH. Methods: Wild-type mice and mice deficient for nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3−/−) were subjected to CA at 37°C and then resuscitated with chest compression. Body temperature was maintained at 37°C (normothermia) or reduced to 33°C (TH) for 24 h after resuscitation. Mice breathed air or air mixed with nitric oxide at 10, 20, 40, 60, or 80 ppm during hypothermia. To evaluate brain injury and cerebral blood flow, magnetic resonance imaging was performed in wild-type mice after CA/CPR. Results: Hypothermia up-regulated the NOS3-dependent signaling in the brain (n = 6 to 7). Deficiency of NOS3 abolished the beneficial effects of hypothermia after CA/CPR (n = 5 to 6). Breathing nitric oxide at 40 ppm improved survival rate in hypothermia-treated NOS3−/− mice (n = 6) after CA/CPR compared with NOS3−/− mice that were treated with hypothermia alone (n = 6; P &lt; 0.05). Breathing nitric oxide at 40 (n = 9) or 60 (n = 9) ppm markedly improved survival rates in TH-treated wild-type mice (n = 51) (both P &lt; 0.05 vs. TH-treated wild-type mice). Inhaled nitric oxide during TH (n = 7) prevented brain injury compared with TH alone (n = 7) without affecting cerebral blood flow after CA/CPR (n = 6). Conclusions: NOS3 is required for the beneficial effects of TH. Inhaled nitric oxide during TH remains beneficial and further improves outcomes after CA/CPR. Nitric oxide breathing exerts protective effects after CA/CPR even when TH is ineffective due to impaired endogenous nitric oxide production.

Abstract:
Bali cattle are one of the original Indonesian germplasm, which in its development were found to be hornless or polled. Polled are Balinese cattle whose horns do not grow naturally, but have the same characteristics as those with horns. However, there are indications that polled have a lower libido. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of libido and testosterone concentration after gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) injection. In this study each of 7 male polled and horned Bali cattle aged 3.5-6 years were used. Libido characteristics were observed by recording the first time the male fondled the teaser until ejaculation, while the testosterone concentration was measured using blood plasma taken on day 0 or before injection, day 7th, and day 14th after GnRH injection. Testosterone analysis used enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The results showed that the libido of polled was not different (P&gt;0.05) compared to that of the horned on the 0, 7th and 14th days after GnRH injection. However, in polled on the 7th day after GnRH injection, it was significantly lower than on day 0 and 14, but on day 0 it was not different with day 14. Testosterone concentration on day 7 after injection of GnRH was not different (P&gt;0.05) compared to day 0 both in polled and horned bulls, but on day 14 after injection was significantly higher (P&lt;0.05) in horned than polled. In conclusion, polled and horned Bali bulls had high libido with a score of +1, but on the 7th day after GnRH injection, polled had lower libido than horns. The testosterone concentrations of polled and horned on day 7 after GnRH injection were not different compared to day 0, while the 14th day was higher in horned bull.

Psocid taxocenoses (<I>Psocoptera</I>) were studied in forest ecosystems of the Western Carpathian Mts. during 1997–2001. As a study frame were used altitudinal vegetation zones (according to PLÍVA 1971, 1991). Lower units of forest typological system (forest type complexes) were used for a classification of ecological conditions as well. Within this work can be the term “mountain spruce forest” understood as following communities of altitudinal vegetation zones (AVZ): the 7th – <I>Fageti-Piceeta</I> s. lat. and the 8th – <I>Piceeta</I>s. lat. These AVZ occur in the study area in the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts. in the Czech Republic and the Oravské Beskydy Mts. in the Slovakia 2,461 adults comprising 16 species were found in total: 12 species (eudominant species <I>Caecilius despaxi, Mesopsocus unipunctatus</I>, dominant species <I>Stenopsocus lachlani, Amphigerontia bifasciata</I>and <I>Caecilius burmeisteri</I> were found in the 7th AVZ and an equal number of species was found in the 8th AVZ (eudominant species <I>Caecilius despaxi, Stenopsocus lachlani</I>). Taxocenoses of psocids were evaluated by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and Divisive Cluster Analysis (DvClA). Material was compared with other material gained from various altitudinal vegetation zones in the Outer Western Carpathians Mts. Characteristic species composition of psocids in the 7 th and 8th altitudinal vegetation zones were designated: the 7th AVZ – <I>Caecilius despaxi – Amphigerontia bifasciata – Mesopsocus unipunctatus – Stenopsocus lachlani</I>, the 8th AVZ is identical but with different species dominance.

Abstract:
Tualanghoney (TH) is rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids and has significant anticancer activity against breast cancer cells comparable to the effect of tamoxifen (TAM),in vitro. The current study evaluated the effects of TH when used in combination with TAM on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. We observed that TH promoted the anticancer activity of TAM in both the estrogen receptor-(ER-)responsive and ER-nonresponsive human breast cancer cell lines. Flow cytometric analyses indicated accelerated apoptosis especially in MDA-MB-231 cells and with the involvement of caspase-3/7, -8 and -9 activation as shown by fluorescence microscopy. Depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane was also increased in both cell lines when TH was used in combination with TAM compared to TAM treatment alone. TH may therefore be a potential adjuvant to be used with TAM for reducing the dose of TAM, hence, reducing TAM-induced adverse effects.

Abstract:
Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevation of blood glucose and a high percentage of glycated hemoglobin A1c. Elevated hemoglobin A1c percentage of more than 7% will result in high production of advanced glycation end-products. Th e elevated level of advanced glycation end-products in diabetic patients means a high risk for diabetic complications. Th e primary endpoint was to evaluate the hemoglobin A1c levels among diabetic patients and its effect on the prognosis of this metabolic disease in all regions inside Saudi Arabia. Methods: Th is was a cross-sectional observational study conducted between March and August 2018. Th e study was done by using a questionnaire containing nine questions which planned to involve at least 390 diabetic patients. Results: Six hundred and ninety-four diabetic patients from Saudi Arabia had answered the nine-question questionnaire about hemoglobin A1c percentage and prognosis of diabetes. Th e mean age of these patients is 43.4 years old and most of those patients (75.5%) were visiting governmental hospitals. Th e number of diabetic patients having hemoglobin A1c less than 7% are 259 patients with hemoglobin A1c mean 6.66% + 3.33%, however, there are 435 patients having hemoglobin A1c more than 7% with mean equals 7.75% + 1.2%, the difference between them is statistically significant (P value < 0.0001). Conclusion: Th e glycated hemoglobin of diabetic patients in all regions of Saudi Arabia was significantly elevated and uncontrolled based on most diabetic guidelines and significantly affects the prognosis by causing diabetic complications especially cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:
The field of polymers in concrete is consolidated in the construction industry. The future of polymers in concrete is governed by the synergic interaction between these materials, in order to contribute significantly towards a more sustainable construction. Concrete-polymer composites (C-PC) have excellent mechanical and durability properties. Appropriate combination of polymers and classical construction materials provides opportunities for innovative applications and systems. This paper highlights the innovations and new approaches presented at the 13th International Congress on Polymers in Concrete in Madeira, Portugal, 2010 and at the 7th Asian Symposium on Polymers in Concrete in Istanbul, Turkey, 2012. The new trends presented are related with the micro and nanostructure, properties, test methods and applications of concrete-polymer composites.

Abstract:
The article raises the issue of teaching seventh-grade children a systematic course “Geometry”. It is proposed to create reference notes in the form of creolized texts, which are already penetrating into modern education. Their main components are the verbal part (inscription) and the iconic part (figure). This concept and three ways of their formation are revealed: verbal text + image, image + verbal text, verbal text = image. Given the peculiarities of the new generation, in the educational process, we propose to use more the second method of creolized texts formation. This approach to the study of geometry is justified by the need to take into account the peculiarity of the modern generation – clip thinking. The article reveals the concept of “clip thinking”. This concept was introduced in the '90s and means a person's perception of the world around him as a sequence of unrelated phenomena. Such thinking has positive aspects, among which it is important to quickly perceive information, mainly by reading the image-picture. And the negative aspects that negatively affect the ability of the younger generation to learn, analyze, generalize, and find cause-and-effect relationships. These negative aspects need to be overcome in every geometry lesson, teaching children to analyze both when solving problems and when creating reference summaries of theoretical material in the form of creolized texts. In the article, the author gives a schematic summary of all the basic geometric material, which children study in the seventh grade (according to the textbook of O. Ister). It is the creation of such a syllabus in the seventh grade and its continuation in the next grades (and this is a mandatory part of the teaching methodology) that promotes the better mastering by students of a systematic course in geometry. This synopsis will be their guide in preparation for the state final certification in the ninth grade.
