Abstract:
Hesiod's Theogony contains three similes, each of which elaborates a climactic moment in Zeus' securing of power: an image of bees (594–602) describes the nature of women in the Pandora episode, the aftermath of Zeus' triumph over Prometheus; battle resounds with a crash as if earth and heaven are coming together (699–705) in the climax of the Titanomachy, wherein Zeus and the Olympians overcome the Titans; and Zeus is likened to a craftsman melting ore (861–7) during his conquest of his final challenger, Typhoeus. In each episode complemented by a simile, Zeus' power attains greater stability; in the aftermath of the last of these episodes, the Typhonomachy, his power achieves permanent ascendancy (881–5). Despite the prominent occasions of these similes, they stand largely unexplored. This paper considers the simile of metallurgy in the Typhonomachy, the simile that reconfigures Zeus' final acquisition of power. Positioned at such a critical moment, attention to this simile promises to reveal elements fundamental to an understanding of Zeus' ultimate power.

Abstract:
In the conditions of the scientific – technical progress the interrelation between society and nature has become much more complicated. The man has begun to interfere in natural processes, has conquered nature forces and with this keeps polluting and damages the environment. The man from the earliest period of his development felt himself as a master of everything that surrounds him. Remember the proverb:”Don’t rock the boat”. One incorrect decision and it will take decades or centuries to correct fatal mistake

PELLICCIOLI, VALENTINA. "HETEROHELICENES AS APPEALING CHIRAL SYSTEMS: INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGIES FOR THEIR PREPARATION ALSO IN ENANTIOMERICALLY PURE FORM." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/820983.

Full text
Abstract:
Helicenes are ortho-annulated polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic compounds, endowed with inherent chirality owing to the helical shape of their π-conjugated system. Carbohelicenes only include benzene rings in their structure, while in heterohelicenes one or more heterocycles are present. Interestingly, the introduction of heteroatoms into the fused polycyclic frameworks adds remarkable changes to the electronic structures of helicenes, and additional chemical and physical properties. Their unique structural features and physicochemical properties have stimulated manifold studies in several fields, including optoelectronics, material science, asymmetric catalysis, and chiral recognition. Many of these applications require the use of enantiomerically pure helicenes, although the resolution of racemates by means of analytical methods as well as the separation of diastereomers still remain the most common ways to obtain non-racemic helicenes, whose peculiar geometry makes them extremely difficult targets for stereoselective synthesis. This Ph.D. thesis was intended to provide a meaningful contribution in the development of innovative and versatile syntheses of heterohelicenes, also in enantiopure form, and has focused on the following main goals: 1. Study of methodologies for the synthesis of functionalised tetrathia[7]helicenes (7-THs). 2. Synthesis of different classes of thiahelicenes through methodologies set up for the preparation of 7-THs. 3. Enantioselective synthesis of thia[5]helicenes via Au-catalysed alkyne hydroarylation. In the course of this thesis, a sub-topic has also been developed: 4. Functionalisation of benzo[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophenes by Suzuki reactions in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs).

Domínguez, Ruiz Manuela. "La colección de escultura clásica del cardenal Despuig en Palma de Mallorca." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/378663.

Full text
Abstract:
The PhD dissertation presented here relates the collection of classical sculpture that Cardinal Despuig gathered during the eighteenth century, early nineteenth century in Italy and is now preserved in the Museu d'Historia de la Ciutat de Palma.Antoni Despuig developed a fruitful ecclesiastical career that led him to settle in Rome following his appointment as Auditor of the Sacred Rota in 1785 and culminating with obtaining the cardinal's purple in 1803 under Pope Pius VII.Like other characters in their social status, Despuig turned to archeology as one among other ways to provide themselves with a part of the sculptural background that would shape his collection. The most important excavations took place in the ancient city of Ariccia, located in the Alban Hills and carried Despuig to give the remains of a luxurious Roman villa, traditionally judged as belonging to Plotina’s freedman, Agathyrsus. In addition to the parts obtained through archeology, Despuig actively participated in the fervid happened antiquarian market at the time. The Despuig’s sculptural collection, gathered first in Rome, moved to Raixa in late eighteenth century. There, Despuig created a museum open to the public. For the development of the museum exhibition, the Majorcan sent to Raixa three sculptors from Italy, Pascual Cortes, Luigi Melis and Giovanni Trivelli and later joined them Francesco Carlo Lazzerini.Although the immediate heirs of Cardinal would have continued to work in the museum, which opened a few years after the death of Cardinal, unfortunately in 1897, the eighth Earl of Montenegro, Ramon Despuig Fortuny, then owner of the collection. proceeded to sale the collection. Relevant pieces were acquired by private collectors, as the millionaire brewer Carl Jacobsen. Another important block of sculptures are auctioned at the Hotel Drouot in 1900. The intervention of some Majorcan intellectuals could slow down the spread of what remained of the collection that eventually was acquired by the city of Palma in 1923 and installed in Bellver Castle in 1932. Until 1995 collection is exhibited in the courtyard and three rooms on the main floor of the castle, headquarters to the Palma’s Museum of History.Unlike the pieces emigrated to European and North American collections, which have been the subject of recurring studies, the bulk of the Despuig collection, still in Majorca, has not suffered the same fate. This PhD dissertation is born from the need to know in depth also parts of Mallorca to get to establish a holistic approach to the collection and place and interpret it correctly within the corresponding historical frame. Consequently, the objective of this work consisted of a detailed study of the sculptural pieces that made up the Despuig collection, currently housed in the Museu d'Historia de la Ciutat de Palma, situated in the Bellver Castle. Critical analysis of parts helped to clarify aspects of its origin, iconography and function, as well as those pertaining to the history of the copies from the moment of its creation, such as the restorations which were submitted and possible reinterpretations meaning they may have suffered.

Saari, Hanna-Kaisa. "Dynamique saisonnière des transferts particulaires dans les systèmes fluviaux-estuariens : application des radioisotopes à courtes périodes : 234 Th, 7 Be et 210 Pb." Thesis, Bordeaux 1, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008BOR13701/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this study was to develop short-lived radioisotopes (234Th, 7Be and 210Pb) as tracers of particle transport in the Garonne-Dordogne-Gironde watershed. Firstly, the possibility to use 234Th/238U pair to study particle residence time in the Gironde fluvial-estuarine system was tested. The results show that dissolved 238U should be greater than 5 mBq l-1 to permit this application in fluvial systems. Secondly, the two years monitoring of natural radioisotopes, 234Th, 7Be and 210Pb, and artificial radioisotopes, 137Cs and 131I, in the Garonne and Lot rivers and in the Gironde Estuary, had allowed to observe the dynamic of particle transport, linked to the river flow. Based on this database, preliminary particle residence times and percentages of the new and old sediments were estimated. In the Lot and Garonne rivers, the particle retention ranges between 2-89 days during low and mean river discharges. The percentage of the new sediments is average 25 %, which indicates that the old resuspended sediments are dominated the suspended particulate matters (SPM). In the Gironde estuary, the particle residence time is mainly controlled by river discharge. The particle residence time during low river discharge is about 400 days. When the river discharge is increasing, the freshwaters are predominant in the estuary, the maximum turbidity zone (TMZ) is dispersed and the old sediments transported toward the ocean. During this period the particle residence time is only few months

Interpretive research method was adopted to investigate the effects of conceptual ecology on the development of students’ biological concepts of the cognitive processes of students. Eight students were selected to take part in this research. Data were collected by open-end paper pen tests, interviews and classroom observations. The findings of the students’ inner conceptual ecology before the instructions had showed that the degrees of semantic knowledge and episodic knowledge were affected by the epistemological commitment of students. When students had commitment to authority, they had more semantic knowledge in their inner conceptual ecology. When students had commitment to the experience, their inner conceptual ecology had more episodic knowledge. Most of the students had more elements of analogies and images in structured concepts. Data analysis also showed that the students with low learning achievements when they had more episodic knowledge in their inner conceptual ecology. When the students had more semantic knowledge than episodic knowledge, their learning achievements were higher by contrast. The teaching conceptual ecology of two classes showed that the major elements were the cognitive part, especially the scientific logical statements. And the philosophical and affective parts of the teaching conceptual ecology were much more fewer. The interaction of student’s inner conceptual ecology and teaching conceptual ecology showed that the poor conceptual development of students were caused by their poor acceptance of scientific logical statements in their learning processes. But when the contents of teaching fitted the students’ elements of affective parts, their conceptual developments were better. Data analysis also showed that students had different achievements in conceptual development because of the different acceptance of the elements of teaching conceptual ecology cause by differences epistemology commitments of students. Finally, the anomalies were appeared and interacted with the teaching conceptual ecology in the students’ inner conceptual ecology. It was shown that the gap between teaching methods and the students conceptual development was bigger than ever before. The conclusion of this research could provide teachers and educators some suggestions.

Lavadenz, Magaly, Elvira Armas, and Rosalinda Barajas. Preventing Long-Term English Learners: Results from a Project-Based Differentiated ELD Intervention Program. CEEL, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.15365/ceel.article.2012.1.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>In this article the authors describe efforts taken by a small southern California school district to develop and implement an innovative, research-based English Language Development program to address a growing concern over long-term English Learners (LTELs) in their district. With support from the Weingart Foundation this afterschool program served 3rd and 7th grade LTELs between 2008–2011 to accelerate language and literacy acquisition and prevent prolonged EL status. Program evaluation results indicated that the intervention was associated with improved English language proficiency as measured by the California English Language Development Test. Results also showed a heightened awareness of effective practices for LTELs among the district’s teachers and high levels of satisfaction among the participants’ parents. This intervention program has implications for classroom-based intervention including project-based learning for LTELs, for targeted professional development, and for further research for the prevention of LTEL status.</p>

Raymond, Kara, Laura Palacios, and Evan Gwilliam. Status of climate and water resources at Big Bend National Park: Water year 2019. Edited by Tani Hubbard. National Park Service, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2294267.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate and hydrology are major drivers of ecosystem structure and function, particularly in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Understanding changes in climate, groundwater, streamflow, and water quality is central to assessing the condition of park resources. This report combines data collected on climate, groundwater, and springs at Big Bend National Park (NP) to provide an integrated look at climate and water conditions during water year (WY) 2019 (October 2018–September 2019). However, this report does not address the Rio Grande or its tributaries. Annual precipitation was higher than normal (1981–2010) for Big Bend NP at four of the five National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Cooperative Observer Program weather stations: 111% of normal for Chisos Basin, 122% of normal for Panther Junction, 155% of normal for Persimmon Gap, and 124% of normal for Rio Grande Village. Castolon had 88% of normal annual precipitation. All five stations had higher than normal rainfall in October and December, while rainfall totals were substantially below normal at all stations in November, February, and March. Monthly precipitation totals for April through September were more variable from station to station. Mean monthly maximum air temperatures were below normal in the fall months, with Panther Junction as much as 7.5°F below normal in October. Monthly temperatures from January through July were more variable. Temperatures in August and September were warmer than normal at every station, up to +9.4°F at Rio Grande Village and +8.7°F at Chisos Basin in July. The reconnaissance drought index values indicate generally wetter conditions (based on precipitation and evaporative demand) at Chisos Basin since WY2016 and at Panther Junction and Persimmon Gap since WY2015, except for WY2017. This report presents the manual and automatic groundwater monitoring results at nine wells. Five wells had their highest water level in or just before WY2019: Panther Junction #10 peaked at 99.94 ft below ground surface (bgs) in September 2018, Contractor’s Well peaked at 31.43 ft bgs in November 2018, T-3 peaked at 65.39 ft bgs in December 2018, K-Bar #6 Observation Well peaked at 77.78 ft bgs in February 2019, and K-Bar #7 Observation Well peaked at 43.18 ft bgs in February 2019. This was likely in response to above normal rainfall in the later summer and fall 2018. The other monitoring wells did not directly track within-season precipitation. The last measurement at Gallery Well in WY2019 was 18.60 ft bgs. Gallery Well is located 120 feet from the river and closely tracked the Rio Grande stage, generally increasing in late summer or early fall following higher flow events. Water levels in Gambusia Well were consistently very shallow, though the manual well measurement collected in April was 4.25 ft bgs—relatively high for the monitoring record—and occurred outside the normal peak period of later summer and early fall. The last manual measurement taken at TH-10 in WY2019 was 34.80 ft bgs, only 0.45 ft higher than the earliest measurement in 1967, consistent with the lack of directional change in groundwater at this location, and apparently decoupled from within-season precipitation patterns. The last water level reading in WY2019 at Oak Springs #1 was 59.91 ft bgs, indicating an overall decrease of 26.08 ft since the well was dug in 1989. The Southwest Network Collaboration (SWNC) collects data on sentinel springs annually in the late winter and early spring following the network springs monitoring protocol. In WY2019, 18 sentinel site springs were visited at Big Bend NP (February 21, 2019–March 09, 2019). Most springs had relatively few indications of natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Natural disturbances included recent flooding, drying, and wildlife use. Anthropogenic disturbances included flow modifications (e.g., springboxes), hiking trails, and contemporary human use. Crews observed one to seven facultative/obligate wetland plant...
