Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy is an innovative technique for non-invasive skin rejuvenation by stimulating neocollagenogenesis. AIMS: The aim of our study was to assess the safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy on the skin using a wavelength of 660 nm, as a photosensitizer (PS) Spherometallochlorin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was divided into 2 stages. The first stage of the study involved 5 female laboratory rats. The first stage was divided into 2 substages: 1A the oral mucosa of 5 rats were irradiated for 30 minutes with 5 wavelengths of 660 nm (energy 100 J/cm2, power 100 mW/cm2). 1B FS Spherometallochlorin was applied to the skin of the back of rats after preliminary shaving in the form of 0.4% gel. Before applying the topical agent, after 15 minutes of exposure, after 30 minutes of exposure, after 45 minutes of exposure, in order to assess the penetration of the PS, a punch biopsy was taken in the area of application of the gel. The second stage of the study involved 15 female volunteers aged 21 to 65 years. At stage 2A, the skin behind the ear of 5 women was irradiated for 30 minutes at a wavelength of 660 nm (energy 100 J/cm2, power 100 mW/cm2) using a PS 0.4% gel containing Spherometallochlorin. Stage 2B evaluated the effectiveness of the effect of PDT procedures on the skin of 15 women. Skin condition was assessed using cutometry, corneometry, measurement of transepidermal water loss, and punch biopsy samples of the parotid skin (before and after the course of procedures), photographing and assessment of unwanted effects were also carried out. RESULTS: The histological picture before and after the study was similar. The preparation usually contained small fragments of the oral mucosa. The superficial squamous non-keratinizing epithelium was of normal morphology. On the surface of some fragments, hemorrhages (artifact of material sampling) were present. No inflammation, edema or hyperemia was observed in the underlying mucosa. Thus, no signs of inflammation or burns were found. CONCLUSION: The used radiation with a wavelength of 660 nm is completely safe, does not cause pathological changes in the skin. The course of PDT procedures is a safe, effective method causing remodeling of the dermis. PDT using 660 nm radiation and Spherometallochlorin as a PS can be recommended for use in practical health care.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to determine the mechanism of the dramatic increase of impact toughness at low temperatures after post-weld heat treatment on weld joints. In this study, weld joints using two semi-automatic welding consumables were fabricated by flux cored arc welding with subsequent PWHT at 660°C for 65 min and 195 min, respectively. Tests of the tensile and yield strength, microhardness and impact toughness, were carried out. The microstructure was inspected by optical, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy in addition to compositional analysis using energy dispersive spectrometry. PWHT was observed to result in grain coarsening, sub-grain structure formation and decrease of the dislocation density. The increase of impact toughness is attributed to the relieved thermal stress, the inclusions and precipitations, softening of the structure, dislocation recovery and sub-grain structure.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Background and study aims Withdrawal time (WT) monitoring and full-spectrum endoscopy (FUSE) have been suggested to increase adenoma detection rate (ADR) due to more accurate evaluation of the hidden areas of the colon. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of WT monitoring and FUSE on ADR. Patients and methods This was a prospective observational study involving consecutive outpatients, aged 18 to 85 years, undergoing colonoscopy with unselected indications. In phase 1, endoscopists performed 660 colonoscopies either with standard forward-viewing endoscope (SFVE) (n = 330) or with FUSE (n = 330). In this phase, WTs were measured without endoscopist awareness of being monitored. In phase 2, endoscopists were informed of being monitored and performed additional 660 colonoscopies either with SFVE (n = 330) or with FUSE (n = 330). Results WT was lower in phase 1 compared to phase 2 (SFVE: 269 ± 83 vs. 386 ± 60 sec, P < 0.001; FUSE: 289 ± 97 vs. 403 ± 65 sec, P < 0.001). Use of FUSE increased ADR both in phase 1 (33.0 % vs. 27.3 %, P = 0.127) and in phase 2 (41.8 % vs. 33.6 %, P = 0.037). When endoscopists were aware of being monitored, ADR was higher in SFVE (33.6 % vs. 27.3 %; P = 0.090) and FUSE arms (41.8 % vs. 33.0 %; P = 0.024). Improvement in detection of proximal adenomas was associated with WT monitoring [OR 1.577 (95 % C. I. 1.158 – 2.148); P = 0.004], whereas detection of distal adenomas was associated with use of FUSE [OR 1.320 (95 % C. I. 1.022 – 1.705); P = 0.037]. Conclusions Unmonitored endoscopists have suboptimal WT, which increases when they are monitored. WT monitoring and use of FUSE are two reliable and alternative strategies to increase ADR.

Abstract:
Objective We compared the accuracy of serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and phosphate (phos) levels for diagnosing severe metabolic bone disease (MBD) in very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Study Design Retrospective analysis of VLBW infants with severe BPD admitted between 2010 and 2012 and with ≥ 1 iPTH, ALP, and phos level collected within a similar 72-hour period. MBD severity was classified by serial radiography. Results Laboratory values were available for 65 infants, of whom 24 (36.9%) developed severe MBD. A maximum ALP > 660 IU/L was the most accurate for diagnosing severe MBD (area under the curve: 88.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 77.2–94.5%). Maximum iPTH was the least accurate (optimal cut point > 130 pg/mL; area under the curve: 70.5%; 95% CI: 58.2–81.4). Conclusion Maximum ALP was more accurate than iPTH or phos for diagnosing severe MBD among preterm infants with severe BPD.

Abstract:
Recordings from human cones exhibit nonlinear response saturation at high intensities, which match the hyperbolic asymptote of the Naka-Rushton equation.1 Psychophysical measurement of this saturation is made difficult by an adaptive gain control mechanism which holds the retinal response at the same operating point on the static nonlinearity. We, therefore, devised a paradigm to clamp the gain control at a fixed adaptation level, allowing direct measurement of the form of the nonlinear response saturation by increment and decrement thresholds. A 7′ test stimulus of 660 nm was viewed in the foveola with a large surround kept at a fixed level of 50,000 trolands (Td). The steady base level of the test stimulus was varied over about a ±1-log unit range but should have had a minimal effect on the local adaptation pool in the region of the test. Two-pulse measures of the response time constant verified constancy of pooled adaptation level over the base intensity range. Up and down test pulses of 65-ms duration were used to probe the static nonlinearity. Up/down asymmetries of up to a factor of 2 occurred at the highest base intensities, as expected from the Naka-Rushton function. A complete specification of the foveolar saturating nonlinearity was constructed from the up/down data.

Abstract:
This work proposes a process simulation of high efficiency intermediate-temperature (660–730°C) SOFC systems for promising applications in the foreseeable future distributed power generation sector. Two case-studies have been considered: the kW-scale unit proposed by Ceramic Fuel Cell Limited (CFCL), which reaches up to 68% stack DC efficiency, and the FuelCell Energy (FCE) SOFC system, where a 65% DC efficiency has been verified on a 10 kW module. Both systems can be applied to distributed generation, yielding 60%+ net electric efficiency (LHV basis) from natural gas at small scale. This study aims at calibrating the two considered SOFC balance of plants with the Politecnico di Milano in-house software GS. Throughout a zero-dimensional model of the complete system a validation of the manufacturer’s claimed performance is possible. The general module configuration is made up of a natural gas pre-treating processor, a SOFC stack, an anodic spent fuel combustor and a waste heat recovery system for CHP applications. A pre-reforming adiabatic reactor has been proven to be an efficient choice to reduce the higher hydrocarbon chains content in the fuel stream and therefore to lessen the burden on the anodic channel, especially in terms of solid carbon deposition. The fuel is then pre-heated and, in the FCE case-study, mixed with the anodic outlet recycle; this last solution is regarded as of utmost importance for the attainment of the high overall fuel utilisation (≈80–85%) factors necessary to reach the proposed high efficiency targets, as well as to provide the steam required by the internal reforming process. Both the considered fuel cell systems performance have been verified and their extremely high efficient operation proven, according to those reported by their manufacturers. In addition to the process simulation, the work lays the foundations for a more thorough SOFC stack modelling throughout a 2D in-house developed software. This analysis gives valuable insights on the geometry characterisation and on the flow arrangement, as well as on their effects on cell internal temperature and composition profiles. In particular, the proposed analysis focuses on the case of a planar cross-flow arrangement, representative of the latter of the two case-studies. The understanding of the internal behaviour of the systems provides useful information to optimise the cell performance and design.

Abstract:
Identifying people in historical photographs is important for interpreting material culture, correcting the historical record, and creating economic value, but it is also a complex and challenging task. In this paper, we focus on identifying portraits of soldiers who participated in the American Civil War (1861-65). Millions of these portraits survive, but only 10-20% are identified. We created Photo Sleuth, a web-based platform that combines crowdsourced human expertise and automated face recognition to support Civil War portrait identification. Our mixed-methods evaluation of Photo Sleuth one month after its public launch showed that it helped users successfully identify unknown portraits.
